THE important advances that have been made of recent years in mining and milling methods and in mechanical equipment at mines need no re- telling, but there has been a remarkable growth in one type of equipment which has gone nearly unnoticed. That is the increasing use of storage-battery locomotives underground. Since the war the number of these locomotives and their field of use have increased tremendously; their growing acceptance represents an al- most complete reversal of opinion from an earlier period when they were generally looked upon as in- adequate for the strain of mine service. At the time when storage-battery powered units were first making their bid for recognition, the use of power in haulage had already passed through several phases; hand tramming, rope haulage, compressed air locomotives, even gasoline locomotives, had all been used, ending finally in the general adoption of the electric trolley locomotive for practically all power-haulage requirements. It was, and is, conceded that the trolley loco- motive met more adequately the varied and severe conditions of mine service than any previous type of haul- age unit. Subsequent developments have had to endure comparison and surpass in performance that type of haulage before changes would be considered.

Drilling and blasting 12-in. blastholes started about the middle of 1946 and has worked out so well that about one half of the blasting, formerly done with 9-in. holes, is now done with 12-in. holes. In most of this work the harder benches were chosen for the 12-in. size because these were the areas where the greatest difficulty was encountered in thorough fragmentation. At the start of this experimental work a 42-T Bucyrus- Erie churn drill was available whereas all other blasthole drilling was being done with 29-T rigs. The large drill was first equipped with a standard 9-in. string of tools but it could not drill quite as fast as the 29-T drills. How- ever, when the weight of the string was increased about 700 lb, or to a total weight of about 3500 lb, it was found that the 42-T exceeded the drilling speed of the 29-T by about 25 per cent. When a 12-in. bit was substituted for the 9-in. bit the 42-T rig again dropped behind the drill- ing rate of the 29-T rigs. At this stage of the experiment the 42-T was using a 12-in. bit with detachable points and the total weight of the string of tools was about 3800 lb. It took longer to change the drill points than it did the regulation bit and this accounted for some of the slower drilling rate. When a heavier stem and standard construction 12-in. bits were used it was found that the 42-T could drill a 12-in. hole slightly faster than a 29-T could drill a 9-in. hole even in the hardest rock in the pit.

Safety work in mining at the Andes Copper Mining Company, Potrerillos, Chile, is divided into three parts: (1) accident prevention, (2) fire prevention and protection, and (3) silicosis prevention and control. In the company's operations a steady campaign has been waged to reduce accidents and silicosis, and to prevent fires. In the following pages the safety record for the past twelve years will be examined and the methods explained by which the accident rate was reduced. Table 1 contains yearly data pertaining to the scale of the mining operations and the accident record. Block caving is used for all ore production and the tonnage mined has aver- aged 30,000 short tons per day for the past seven years. Table 2 classifies 44 fatal accidents which have occurred since 1935. The leading causes of accidental death are transportation of ore and use of explosives, followed in order by per- sons falling, falls of ground, and by asphyxiation. The global mining industry has recorded significant declines in accident and injury rates attributed to the advancement in technology, increased enforcement, and safety consciousness. A goal of the mining industry is to achieve zero injury and occupational illness on all mine sites, prompting increased research into ways to further reduce mine accidents. A machine learning technique known as multiclass logistic regression is applied on a 10-year injury dataset from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to determine a miner’s susceptibility to a class of injury and to help identify significant risk factors associated with different classes of injury. The data is aggregated based on injury classification to provide statistically relevant results. The analysis identifies specific risk factors that influence a mine worker’s susceptibility to a given class of injury, i.e., non-fatal with no days lost or restricted activity, non-fatal with days lost and/or days of restricted work activity, and fatal and total permanent or partial permanent disability. These factors include miner’s age, mine type (coal vs. non-coal), experience on the current job (years), shift start time, employment type (operator vs. contractor), mining district, and type of accident. The results of the analysis indicate that a miner’s experience on the job, i.e., the number of years worked in a current job, is a significant risk to injury occurrence, even for those with decades of total mining experience. We further show the differences and similarities between the surface and underground mine incidents.

Aspects of blast vibrations, damage mechanisms and the influence of rock quality on damage severity are reviewed and results presented from a monitoring programme in which the rock mass rating for six tunnels was determined. The peak particle velocity induced in the tunnels during open-pit blasting was measured and the tunnels were inspected visually for fresh damage after each blast. The results suggest that the quality of rock in which an excavation is situated has an influence on the level of ground vibration to which it can be subjected without sustaining damage. This means that the use of a single limiting value of peak particle velocity, as in the blast damage criteria for residential structures, is not ideal and may result in damage to excavations in poorer-quality rock masses

Approximately 90% of the primary roof bolts used in CONSOL?s Pittsburgh seam coal mines is 2-piece, 8-foot long, 7/8? (or ¾?), high-strength, resin assisted, mechanical shell tensioned bolt. The remaining 10% is the 2-piece, 8-foot long, 7/8? combination bolt, which employs 4 feet of fast resin to anchor the deformed rebar at the top of the hole. In either system, a 1-3/8? hole is required to accommodate the mechanical shell and the coupler. The cheaper torque-tension rebar system, which is typically fully-grouted with 2-speed resin and which typically provides low bolt tension, is not used in CONSOL?s Pittsburgh seam mines. Rather, it is used in CONSOL?s Central Appalachia mines, where the roof rocks have CMRR rating of 50 or higher. Fully-grouted headed rebars, on the other hand, are used in CONSOL?s room-and-pillar mines. The selection of tensioned versus non-tensioned, fully-grouted bolts for coal mine primary roof support has been debated for the past thirty years. Many researches have been conducted to understand the theoretical bases behind the two systems. This paper describes CONSOL?s experience of using a new fully-grouted, mechanical shell tensioned bolt in the Pittsburgh seam with the development of low insertion force resin.

Abstract Usiminas Steel Plant in Ipatinga installed an accelerated cooling device named CLC (Continuous On-Line Control) in 2010, enabling it to supply steels produced by TMCP (Thermo Mechanical Control Process) technology. This technology complements the TMCR (Thermo Mechanical Control Rolling), with the inclusion of the accelerated cooling process after controlled rolling. There are various gains in terms of quality and productivity associated to the application of such technology. However, the flatness control for API steel becomes crucial because large thermal stresses may be generated due to thermal heterogeneity during the fast cooling when the austenite phase decomposes mostly into ferrite and bainite. In literature, there is lack of knowledge regarding a full understanding of the relation among cooling conditions and plate flatness. Therefore, this work has focused on the effect of the cooling strategy for API steels, aiming at optimizing flatness and keeping the mechanical properties within the specified ranges. The starting point was dilatometer simulation, where cooling conditions such as start cooling temperature, SCT, finish rolling temperature, FRT, and cooling rate, CR, were changed in order to evaluate their effect on microstructure. Those laboratory conditions supposed to give the best results were transposed to industrial scale, so as to produce experimental lots of plates with five different cooling strategies. It was shown the possibility to find a cooling profile that guarantees the balance between mechanical properties and flatness requirements. Operators of mining machinery like haul trucks or excavators have very limited information about the exact distance to other equipment as well as to the natural boundaries like berms, walls and structures such as crushers. The industry is seeking solutions to provide safety and positioning. The authors have developed a solution approach which is being used in several installations. This solution consists of three parts: first robust and compact two-dimensional (2D) radar scanners that provide range and angular information of the environment especially under difficult conditions like dust, rain, snow and fog; second an intelligent data processing framework flexible enough to adopt to different machines and operation modes like speed, inclination, visibility, tire friction, GPS position, orientation and acceleration; and third a high quality and easy to use interface giving highly condensed data to the operator, not blinding the operator at night and being sunlight readable. The truth of present proximity detection sensors is that they not only have a high false alarm rate but furthermore cover only a fraction of the possible scenarios. This makes them unsuitable for stand-alone collision avoidance systems. On the other side, mine dispatch systems only deliver database and GPS information, but no information regarding the real environment. The indurad company and its Australian partner CTS (http://www.cts.com.au) addressed these aspects by developing smart productivity enhancement driver assistance tools like lane and crusher dumping assistance.An innovative driver assistance tool developed in cooperation with the coal shearer manufacturer Eickhoff and the RWTH Aachen University has been awarded with the annual research award of its customer RAG, being the largest German hard coal producer, as well as with the bauma Innovation Award in 2010.

Events of the mid-1970's have materially affected US coal production and transportation by railroad. Coal, as a replacement or substitute for petroleum fuels, has been hauled in significantly increased tonnages. Concurrent with the new demand, the railroad regulatory environment has undergone major changes, especially in "deregulation" activity. Those two events have produced considerable Litigation regarding coal rates. This paper discusses the factors involved with railroad rates and topics such as revenue adequacy, Ramsey Pricing, stand-alone cost, and differential pricing. In addition, an update on the western railroad merger situation and the implications for coal transportation are presented. The paper concludes with an evaluation of the current regulatory climate and future prospects.

Alliancing is a contractual relationship in which organisations with an interest in a project are brought together in an atmosphere of co-operation to produce superior results to benefit all of the participants. Fundamental to the concept is the management of the risks associated with the project. The traditional risk management strategy adopted by clients has been to transfer this risk to others in the belief that this will result in the lowest overall project cost. It is assumed that competition in the market place will allow these risks to be transferred without paying a premium. However, this approach often results in the development of an adversarial climate, a high level of litigation, time and cost overruns and an overall poor project outcome. Under an alliancing arrangement the parties (client, designer and contractor) are aligned through shared interests in the projectÆs success by linking profitability to performance. Under such an arrangement, an atmosphere is created whereby the participants are motivated to focus on cost-savings, pursue best value and to innovate. Successful alliancing can result in highly motivated project teams and realisation of extraordinary productivity and cost-savings flowing from increased efficiencies. The situations in which alliancing can be successful are discussed with particular reference to the Wandoo Alliance which successfully completed the $375 million Wandoo B offshore oil platform in record time and with considerable savings to the project budget.

Several approaches to the estimation of the size discrete breakage rate and distribution parameters (kj and bi,j ) of the batch grinding kinetic model are available in the literature. Analysis of a large amount of data available in the literature and our own data on several pure minerals and complex ores has shown that it is not always possible to obtain correct estimates of the two sets of parameters using known approaches as several widely different combinations of k and b parameters can sometimes simulate the batch grinding data reasonably accurately. It has been found that there are two main reasons: (i) all size classes are not well represented in the data and (ii) functional forms used for estimation of the two sets of parameters are sometimes chosen somewhat arbitrarily (especially in the case of complex ores), though they are actually uniquely related through size continuous breakage rate and distribution functions. A suitable experimental methodology has been described and demonstrated using some synthetic data and actual experimental data. A mill function approach, which does not require making any assumptions about the functional forms for k and b parameters, is also described and demonstrated. This approach is promising, but requires further development.

Simulation of complex equilibria is usually done in the P-T-X coordinates, where "Xu is the amount of individual chemical components in the system. This approach is not productive in some very important cases: (i) investigation of "open" systems, (ii) determination of coordinates (trajectories) of mono-variant points, among others. To solve these and some other problems, we use the idea of chemical potentials of elements (CPE) of the system. A system of different coordinates axes (CPE-axes ) leads to a new strategy of simulation, observing the results of the simulation, and to efficient technology of compressing and storage the data of the simulation.

A small static bed was used to study the thermal cycles required for the heat hardening of pellets based on synthetic magnetite concentrates and a naturally fine hematite. This apparatus can be employed to yield broad process data for the design of a recuperative strand system operating on the magnetite concentrates.Various alternatives are given for a process to heat harden the hematite ore but a preference is given to the production of a self fluxing pellet. Bond types and general mineralogical structures are interpreted against the optimum firing cycle necessary to produce a defined quality of pellet.INTRODUCTIONThe work reported in this paper extends that on the "Heat Hardening of Artificial Magnetite Pellets", which was described at the International Symposium on Agglomeration, sponsored by the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers at Philadelphia, U.S.A. in April 1961. IN last year's report on the progress of geophysics, the airborne magnetometer was the featured new development. At that time only a relatively small number of surveys had been made. During 1947, the airborne magnetometer was used in making many surveys and is again one of the high lights of the year in geophysics. This report is mainly concerned with geophysics as applied to the search for minerals exclusive of petroleum. In 194,5 and 1946, the use of the magnetic method reached a peak, partly because of an active period of prospecting brought on by an active mining market, particularly in Canada.

The Bureau of Mines has undertaken research to elucidate the chemistry involved in the efficient recovery and control of minor elements in base metal smelting operations. These elements should be effectively recovered not only because they have commercial value, but also because of their potential hazard to workers' health and the environment, if they are not controlled during processing. Cadmium, a minor metal in zinc ores, is the subject of this report. The roasting step of the complex zinc-smelting process was chosen for investigation because of the high potential for removing cadmium by volatilization during this primary stage. Commercial roaster feed materials were used to determine the sequence of reactions and the effect of these reactions on the volatilization of cadmium. Electron microprobe examination of both the commercial roaster product and oxidized sulfide solid solutions prepared in the laboratory showed that oxidized iron was of prime importance in preventing cadmium volatilization. The mechanism by which iron prevents cadmium volatilization is proposed, and a preheating technique is recommended for more effectively recovering cadmium prior to roasting.

The risk from fire remains one of the most serious of underground mine disaster scenarios. The impacts of mine fires on the underground ventilation system and the production of toxic gases have been difficult to model and therefore assessments have relied largely on empirical data, historical precedent and subjective opinions. Underground fire modelling software has had limited availability and been technically challenging and time consuming to use especially for routine mine investigations. There has also been no well-accepted set of assumptions for fire modelling in mines, which has resulted in a lack of confidence in adopting its use more widely. This paper describes modelling of three critical fire scenarios in underground hard rock mines: a fire (LHD) in an underground diesel refuelling facility, a fire in an underground explosives magazine and a fire on an underground ore transport conveyor. Modelling was undertaken using VentsimÆs VentFIREÖ fire simulation module. It describes the basis of design, the key assumptions, the methodology used and provides examples of the outputs, conclusions and recommendations. It reviews the impacts of these fires on egress and entrapment strategies in the mine. Some general principles regarding improvements to ventilation circuit design based on this analysis are also recommended. Whilst the fire scenarios were based on actual case studies, they have been disguised for this paper.CITATION:Brake, D J, 2013. Increasing world competition puts pressure on sales volumes and prices. This in turn reduces potential profit margins. This in turn increases the focus on costs.Increasing demands on quality and service puts pressure on delivery performance - the right product at the right time. This in turn reduces the scope for errors and delays - and this in turn increases focus on equipment reliability. In the mining industry, both costs and equipment reliability have one significant thing in common - they are driven substantially by maintenance.
