Metallic droplets can remain attached to solid particles within liquid slags, resulting in production losses in several movement of solid particles in the liquid slag in a system, considering the attachment of liquid metal droplets to solid slag and on the resulting microstructures is investigated as a function of the velocity of the particles. For all wetting For the amount of metal attached to the particle, a clear trade-off was found between the speed of motion of the solid particle and the wetting regime.

WE were requested to make a digest of our original grinding report, Fine Grinding Investigations at Lake Shore Mines. This digest is much easier to read than the original report, but it lacks the experimental 'evidence' found in the first report which, in many cases, is much more interesting and educational than the conclusions derived from it. In the course of rewriting the paper, we noticed several new angles on the test data which had not occurred to us previously. From the data included in the report and other tests not published, calculations were made which indicated a line of new test work. These tests, among other things, more than suggest a technique for designing the length of mills, the position and number of classifiers, and the total loads a mill should carry.

There is an old education maxim that a good teacher "first tells 'em what he's gonna tell 'em, then he tells 'em, and finally he tells 'em what he told 'em. I'm sure this says something about me as a teacher, and therefore as a student as well, but I'm going to begin by violating that maxim. The first thing I'm going to do is tell you what I'm not going to tell you. I'm not going to tell you that my company has found the solution to frozen coal problems. I'm not going to tell you that there is a miraculous new formula, and your frozen coal worries are over. Actually, it is really questionable whether there is a single step or process which will provide the answer. On the other hand, I do believe that at Union Electric we have made significant improvements in our ability to deal with frozen coal over the last couple of years, and I propose to describe some of the things we have done, what conclusions we have drawn so far, and the direction in which we are now headed. It would be well here to give a brief picture of the Union Electric system and the frozen coal problems we face. Union Electric is an investor owned electric utility with headquarters in St. Louis, Mo. Total generating capability is on the order of 6800 megawatts, which snakes us 24th or 25th largest in the United States. Power generation is by steam (both coal and oil fired), hydro, pumped hydro, and combustion turbine units. Although that is a diverse power supply, by far the largest source is our four coal fired steam plants. One receives coal exclusively by barge, the other three by rail. It is at these last three plants that the frozen coal difficulties arise.

This report documents the current status of the U.S. Bureau of Mines ongoing investigation of the use of adaptive signal discrimination (ASD) systems to distinguish between cutting coal and cutting rock. Cutting-tool forces and vibrations were measured in the laboratory using both conical bits and roller cutters in a linear-cutting apparatus for several material samples and two cutting directions. A number of ASD systems consisting of one or more signal classifiers were trained and tested to study how data window size, type of signal feature, and combining (polling) of classifier results influence system performance. The results show that ASD system recognition rates can be improved by increasing data window size, removing air-cutting portions from the signal data, overlapping data windows, and combining (fusing) information at various levels of ASD system operation.

"The technology and equipment design of the Twenty-first Century permit us to exploit low-grade ore bodies with milled tonnages reaching 300,000 tpd. Because of their substantial operational costs (energy, wear parts, etc) and precarious economic situations, the operations of today must maximize their metallurgical performance.The implementation of an Expert System becomes a logical avenue to pursue in view of increasing plant performance.Many operations, following the implementation of an Expert System, meet the objectives they determined before its integration; such as increased tonnage, stability, decreased costs, etc. However, they often cannot develop the full potential of the system due to certain factors that have been neglected or omitted during the implementation of the system.Three main elements have been identified during the implementation phase at INMET Mining Troilus Concentrator: 1- Instrumentation & Control 2- Software 3- Integration. Even though they have been clearly identified, these elements are often neglected due to lack of resources or lack of comprehension on the part of the operations personnel. This document will demonstrate, based upon our experience at Troilus and that of Metso Minerals, that we can identify and handle many factors which influence the profitability of the Expert System, for both short and long-term process control improvements.INTRODUCTIONThe Inmet Troilus Mine is an open pit mine, situated 175 km north of Chibougamau in the province of Québec, Canada. The mill, which started production in November of 1996, was originally designed to treat a gold – copper ore at a rate of 10,000 tpd.In early 1998, the mine plan called for a pit pushback and decreasing head grades for the following two years. With the price of gold nearing decade lows, the Troilus project was facing a major economical setback. There was a sense of urgency to reduce operating costs below the market price of gold. The mill team presented a project to management calling for an increase in mill throughput while minimizing capital expenditures and operating costs. This idea was supported by the existing mine plan, which called for a mine cut-off of 0.7 g/t Au and stockpiling low grade 0.5 g/t material for future milling."

Theoretical studies carried out on shape analysis supply mathematical tools to analyze the influence of grain shapes on ore beneficiation. In the case of statistic images like those encountered in applied mineralogy parametrical and harmonical analysis methods are used. It is important that the shape parameters are adapted to the specific processes involved in ore beneficiation, while remaining easy to manipulate. The inertia parameters are considered in the scope of granulometric and gravimetric processes It appears that they are able to distinguish between the resulting products where very popular shape parameters are not. The measured statistics are analyzed through discriminant analysis procedures in order to estimate the importance of morphological differentiation and the aptitude of shape parameters to account for this.

Mega projects present unique challenges with regard to estimating costs. With such projects, which may span decades, these challenges often begin as soon as a project is conceived. The importance of having a sound, resource based estimate avail-able early in the process cannot be overstated because it provides the basis for ongoing project decisions. For the final phase of providing an updated cost estimate, often while bidding by contractors is underway, the Engineer?s Estimate (EE) must incorporate present market conditions; account for possible volatile material price swings; be based on actual labor and fringe costs; rely on meaningful productivity rates; and accommodate any recent technology advances while identifying and allowing for risk factors. This paper explains the benefits associated with consultants adopting a contractor?s estimating approach when preparing the Engineer?s Estimate on mega projects like the various tunneling projects in New York City.

All underground operations have limiting factors that influence overall profitability. Hoisting, hauling, available headings, labor, milling capacity and other factors limit how much material can be removed from an underground mine. Consequently, when mines use limited labor to handle the additional rock from overbreak and to perform extra ground support tasks, productive activity is replaced by non-productive work. Mining economics are further penalized when overbreak causes dilution of ore grades. This paper reviews organizational systems that mines have used to create environments which foster the creation of successful overbreak control programs. Actual case histories document the various quality improvement techniques, worker incentives, and practical project management systems used by these mines. A brief review of controlled blasting technology sources and overbreak measurement tools is also included.

(Presented at a Meeting of the Spokane Local Section of the Institute, Feb. 17, 1912, and accepted for publication in the Bulletin. ) WHILE I am not at the present time engaged in active mine-management, my duties permit of extensive study and examination of many mines, mills, and reduction-works in various places throughout the United States. Being much interested in efficiency-work in general, and an ardent reader of writings on this subject by Frederick W. Taylor and others, as applied to manufacturing-plants, and having served my apprenticeship from mucking to the engineering design of ore-dressing and underground plants, I hope that this paper will lead others to investigate the field more fully, to the improvement of general mine- and mill-operations, as well as the advancement, intellectually, physically, and financially, of the employee and his relations with the employer. If a man who is prepared to look closely and observe broadly starts in Canada and zig-zags from camp to camp to southern Mexico, taking time casually to inspect mines, mills, and smelters, he will be pitifully impressed by the great difference in customs, and the general waste of labor, time, and money throughout the country. He will so seldom observe a dollar's worth of results given in exchange for a dollar spent that he will form a poor opinion of operating-efficiency and management. This highly-scientific department, requiring an amount of skill and executive ability equaled in few, if any, of the professions, certainly falls short of the standard established in our greater manufacturing industries. It is easily said that this is due to the diversity of conditions in mining, milling, and smelting. But on second view it must be admitted that there is room for tremendous improvements in nearly every mining-organization. WE assemble again today in this comfortable, hospitable Inn to begin this, the 58th, Meeting of our Society. It is just a year ago when last we met but that year was, probably, the most portentious year in the whole history of mankind. In that year, the German 'Atlantic Wall' was broached, the Rhine was crossed, and Germany, as a Nation, has ceased to be. The agony of Europe is over; convalescence may be, probably will be, slow. But blood no longer flows in Europe. Time will heal the sores, cover the scars, regenerate the industries, rebuild the cities, and re-establish the people. True, the war of all wars is not yet over. True, a bloody conflict remains . But, the power of the United Nations now converges on one target. The rain of blood will be heavy. We can hope the storm will be short. The sun is on the horizon. The light of peace 1s in the sky. What of that Peace? Are we ready for it? Have we a 'sure foundation ' for our future world? Are the footings under that foundation broad and substantial? Can we look forward with confidence to a lasting peace and a fruitful life? The United Nations, even as this is being written, are in conference in San Francisco, placing the footings, rearing the foundations for a world edifice. There are bickerings; there are jealousies. The world is tired, and a tired family always squabbles. We can, we must, believe that the decisions they make, the edifices they rear, will be better than anything we each could effect separately. It will be a compromise, probably; it will carry things that will hurt us, just as it will carry things that will hurt others. We can, we must, believe that the good of the whole is a greater good than the good of the part. Each Nation within the United Nations must sacrifice something, each part of each Nation must sacrifice something, each individual within each part of each nation must contribute something, if the whole is to be wholesome. Sacrifice and contribution must be the order of the day if the New World we are about to build is to be worth while. What of Nova Scotia? The world has travelled far in the last year; how far has Nova Scotia gone? Canada has preparations for the Peace under way; what has Nova Scotia done? Is Nova Scotia preparing counter measures for the sacrifices it must make? Is each of us ready to contribute his share?

The evaluation of industrial minerals deposits for investment decision making follows the same basic principles that apply to metallic deposits. For example, the quantity and quality of the mineral occurrence is assessed, engineering/economic feasibility studies are performed for various production scenarios, project evaluation criteria are calculated for each alternative, and finally, an investment decision is made. A more specific evaluation-related example of commonality between metallic and nonmetallic deposit assessment relates to the various parameters which impact project feasibility studies. There exists a suite of pertinent factors which must be considered, studied, and analyzed when evaluating any mining property. Table 1 is an outline of some, but certainly not all, of the various factors which should be considered when preparing feasibility studies on mining properties. Most analysts agree that all the factors listed in Table 1 should be assessed to some degree in at least one of the feasibility studies prepared during the property's evaluation period.

"INTRODUCTION Many ore deposits were discovered in the Wallapai Mining District, which covers the Cerbat Range in Mohave County, Ariz., during the early period of mining there from about 1865 to the 1890's. A considerable amount of production was obtained from shallow lead carbonate ores that carried considerable gold and silver.Mining was revived in 1906 and again during the First World War, and soma of the mines were deepened into the underlying sulfide zone. Substantial quantities of metal were recovered from two mines, the Golconda and the Tennessee-Schuylkill, that were, developed to depths of 1,600 and 1,400 feet, respectively. The Golconda is credited with $6,500,000 gross productions. 2/ This mine was not operated after 1917. The Tennessee-Schuylkill is still operating after a yield of about 300,000 tons of ore that averaged 4.33 percent lead and 7.74 percent zinc and contained an appreciable amount of gold and silver.Many of the old mines were reopened in 1942 or 1943 under the stimulus of premium prices for lead and zinc. A large proportion of this work was finished with loans from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. It was believed that a good deal of lead and zinc could be recovered from the mines if a custom mill for concentration of the ores was available locally."

Most miners dream of finding a gold mine sometime during their mining careers, but not very often do such dreams come true. On the tenth day of September, 1962, our dream of finding gold came true when the results of the third drill hole were received. This was undoubtedly one of the most exciting days of our lives. Little did we realize then that this was the beginning of a major discovery destined to became one of the largest gold mines in the country. Discovering and mining gold is not entirely new, however, to Eureka. County a old Lynn Mining District in northeastern Nevada. Since 1900 there has been sporadic activity, mostly consisting of small lode mines and placers. These have produced totally about $300,000; and existence of our orebody would probably have remained unknown had it not been for the United States Geological Survey. The USGS extensively mapped the Roberts Mountain Thrust and published a paper indicating that mineral occurred along this fault and in some places was gold bearing. Utilizing this information, our Newmont Exploration geologists located an area in which: drills were brought in to test their theories. By keeping flexible in our thinning and working, we were able to bring a raw prospect to a producing mine with ore reserves of eleven million tons in a short three-year period.

Samples of clays , shales , and argillites from 21 locations were subjected to preliminary bench- scale tests for bloating properties , and several samples were tested for ceramic properties . Samples showing favorable bloating properties were further tested in a pilot - plant - scale rotary kiln . Physical characteristics and concrete -making properties of the bloated products were determined . The Decorah shale from one area made a suitable material for a lightweight aggregate ; however , the limestone layers in the formation must be eliminated or the resulting activated lime must be controlled by quenching .

If you have ever driven on the Autobahns of Western Germany, you are well acquainted with the "fast lane." There is no speed limit; there are only two lanes in the direction you are going, and if you choose to drive in the fast lane, you had better be prepared to drive faster than anyone or someone will tailgate you with a constant screeching horn until you move to the "slow lane." The prize for this mastery of the fast lane is some kind of a "macho" feeling and getting to your destination sooner than your competitor. This has some comparisons with today Is liquid-sol id separation. We've certainly had our moments in the fast lane but we've also had other countries forcing us into the slow lane at times. It can be very embarassing when someone almost runs over your back and then shakes a fist at you as you shakily scatter to the much slower and overcrowded lane. Because of necessity, there will be many new improvements and added requirements in the next decades into the 21st century and beyond. Those countries and industries that can maintain the pace in the fast lane will be successful while the others may well be relegated to the non-competitive lane. Before considering what will be the challenges in the future for competitive liquid-sol id separation performance, it would be wise to review progress over the past forty years in this area. The author has to admit his ancient age and believes he can act as an evaluator of these many advances. INTRODUCTION Mining companies are In the business of making an acceptable profit on their Investments, It became obvious in the recent recession that economic profitability/viability depends on being the lowest cost producer In order to compete on a global basis. The burden of achieving this objective falls on the mineral manager. He must strive to produce a salable product in an environmentally acceptable process while continuously Improving the profit margln.(1,2) Metal prices fluctuate on a regular basis. They directly Impact revenue and hence operating philosophy. The mineral engineer needs to develop an optimum operating strategy to meet his overall objectives, One would expect that, In the modem era of complex computer models, it would be easy to develop an economic model to maximize profits and/or cash flow. Discussions with mill managers Indicate that one mine/corporation's optimum operating strategy is not necessarily optimum for another. This paper approaches the problems from basics "Economics 101" and Illustrates the complexity of developing a universal model which can be applicable to all mines. Case examples are used to illustrate the need for better communication to avoid the basic economic fallacy “that optimization of segments leads to optimization of the whole system.” TECHNICAL MODELS Technical models are a prerequisite to the development of economic models because they provide the necessary Input data to these models, The flow of material from a mine through the sale of the finished product is shown In Figure 1. The ore Is mined and milled, and the concentrate can be stored for sale or smelted and refined In-house or at a toll facility. The finished product(s) are held In Inventory until sold either through existing contracts or in the spot market. [ ] Fairly reliable technical models have been developed for mining, milling and smelter operations. Mine plans are developed to provide a good Indication of the relationship between production and cut-off grade. It is easier to change surface mine plans than plans for underground mines. However, there are limits to maximum production that can be achieved with existing equipment. It Is possible that mine benches may not be developed to handle additional equipment, even If It was purchased to enhance production. More often than not, the cut-off grade Is lowered to Increase throughput goals.

In recent times there has been an increase in the demand from Steel plants for a technology that offers the most economical environmentally sustainable solution. In terms of blast furnace off gas cleaning this has seen a drive towards Cyclone technology replacing the older Dustcatchers. Cyclone technology can achieve dust removal efficiencies as high as 95% increasing the dust yield at the primary stage of gas cleaning. The dry dust (rich in Fe and C) can then be recycled to the Sinter Plant or Blast Furnace. Capture of dust at this stage also has the benefit that sludge generation from the secondary stage is also reduced meaning less waste to landfill and / or recovery of some of the by-products for further use. Primetals Technologies already offer a state of the art Tri-Axial Cyclone installed on many sites world-wide, however, this paper focuses on a hybrid of this technology, the DustClone. The DustClone is a low CAPEX unit that is essentially a Cyclone housed inside the Dustcatcher. This unit is aimed at operators who may be carrying out smaller scaled shutdowns / repairs that normally have a reduced CAPEX. This paper describes the technology that Primetals Technologies have developed.

FOR the past seven years, all flotation at the Britannia mill has been done in Forrester Air-Lift cells. Prior to 1931, the roughing and part of the cleaning operation had been performed in four 21-cell and two 14-cell M.S. machines. The resulting economies in reagent, power, maintenance, and general operating costs, and the increased recovery, more than justified the exclusive use of the Forrester machine. About three years ago, the possibility of still further improving the efficiency of the flotation section was the subject of considerable discussion and experiment. Arising from these experiments, tests were made of the practicability of using a cell of greater depth than that of any pneumatic or mechanically-agitated machine in common use. Cells were constructed with depths of 7 .5 feet, 10 feet, and 15 feet, and, in all cases, a very definite improvement in operation was indicated. The cell now being used in the mill treats from 5,500 to 6,200 tons of dry feed per day. It is 100 ft. long by 5 ft. wide by 8 ft. deep, and has replaced a total length of over 500 feet of standard Forrester machine. The choice of a depth of 8 feet was governed by the type of blower which was available-in this case, a Roots-Connersville blower, driven by a synchronous motor and delivering 6,000 c.f.m. of free air at 4.0 pounds per square inch. At the Chelan Division of the Howe Sound Company, where a new mill was recently built, all flotation is carried on in cells 10 feet deep, with good results.

Flow-sheets for each of these plants will be found in the reference cited.General InformationTwenty-eight ball-mills and one rod-mill are used by the Noranda organization for grinding ore. These mills, which are shown in general outline in Plate IV, are all of the overflow type and have a cylindrical shell attached to dished heads.Most of them are serviced by hand-operated cranes and none by power cranes. During re-lining, portable tugger hoists are employed to lift the liners and, frequently, to install them in place.The mills vary in length and diameter and the ratio of end liner area to breast liner -area consequently ranges from 1. 6.75 in a 5 ft. by 14 ft. mill, to 1:2.28 in an 8 ft. by 8 ft. mill."
