A preliminary program dated April 25, 1974 was prepared for Development Engineering, Inc. (D.E.I.) on research and development, laboratory; field and other engineering studies for the disposal of retorted oil shale. This program was revised and published as a final document dated December 17, 1974. The document included a discussion on the peculiarity of retorted shale materials to be investigated and a discussion of the various laboratory and field tests which would need to be conducted to define their physical and chemical properties. The proposed research and development program was divided into eight work phases as follows: I - Program Development II - Exploratory Laboratory tests on old U.S.B.M., retored shale III - Laboratory tests on Pilot Plant retorted shale IV - Laboratory tests on retorted shale from Semi-Works Plant, and field and test plots and ponds. In the literature, f is sometimes chosen as the dominant frequency (fdm) estimated from the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) of the blast vibration wave, on other occasions, f is chosen to be the principal frequency (fpr) from the vibration cycle with the peak vibration amplitude.

An investigation was made to determine the creep behavior of oil shale at elevated temperatures. During the first phase of the investigation, work done on creep behavior of geologic materials was reviewed and triaxial creep tests on oil shale were planned. Tests at temperatures up to 250°C and axial stress up to 3000 psi were conducted at no confinement and at confining pressures equal to 1/3 and 2/3 of axial stress. Wide variations in the elastic properties as well as creep characteristics are exhibited. Creep deformation is more pronounced at elevated temperature but no definite quantitative remarks can be made regarding effect of grade of oil shale due to wide scatter and limited number of data paints. Primary creep can be described by a power law. Secondary creep seems to be an experimental function of deviatoric stress. Teritary creep was not observed within the test duration (24 hours in most tests).

Brunswick Mine is one of the largest underground zinc/lead mines in Canada, producing 3.4 million tones of ore annually. As mining activities advance to deeper levels, ground pressure also becomes greater. To cope with the highly stressed ground, the mine has taken some strategic measures to ensure the targeted production level. Such measures include the implementation of a pastefill system and transferring the mining method from primary/secondary stoping to pillarless pyramid stoping. With the pillarless mining method, stope sizes become smaller and the number of active stopes is also less than before. In addition, mining sequence and cycle time have to be strictly followed according to production schedule. The blasting project described in this paper tackles one of the steps in the mining cycle aimed at shortening the blasting cycle time in a stope. Furthermore, this project was conducted and managed with the Six Sigma initiative in Noranda which was implemented in the fall of 1999. Like a typical process review, the blasting operation was examined by breaking it down into many steps that can be quantified and measured. Each activity was then correlated with different factors associated with blast design as well as blast operations underground. It was found that the utilisation of voids plays a key role in the blasting cycle time. With improved void utilisation ratio, blasting cycle time has been reduced from an average of 12 shifts to ten shifts per stope. This improvement translates into approximately 180 000 tonnes of ore being blasted without any increase in manpower. This paper presents the technical aspects of the study, as well as some operational issues and improvements made during the project.

Mining and tunnelling share many commonalities (eg confined working environments, excavation equipment and processes), but of significance is an overarching commitment to provide safe work conditions and environments. This includes reducing exposure to hazardous airborne contaminants such as dust and fumes, in particular Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) and Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM), with methods that are environmentally sustainable. In mining, wet methods are common to suppress airborne contaminants, however these methods are reliant on water availability, can be less effective for respirable dust, can have implications for environmental water contamination and can increase maintenance on mining equipment. In contrast, the use of dust scrubbers that provide filtration of airborne contaminants are well established in the tunnelling industry and frequently used to provide spot extraction (dust control at the source) and act often as a complement to the main ventilation system. This paper sought to learn more about the advancements in tunnelling that could be readily applied to mining to improve health outcomes. The paper includes a review of literature and legislation related to health and sustainability and interviews with three respected, and experienced managers from the global tunnel construction industry. It is from these interviews that the focus of the paper turns to Sydney’s WestConnex underground tunnel network and the success of stage 3A M4-M5 construction link. The findings position dust scrubbers as integral to the overall project success as they enabled a Tunnel Production Line (TPL), where multiple stages of construction could take place simultaneously by controlling high volumes of dust at the source. The findings also suggest efficiencies of using mobile scrubbers, both track mounted and hydraulic stepping systems, to accompany road headers and other equipment throughout the excavation process. The findings have transferable applications to underground mining processes in which workers are exposed to high volumes of dust (eg drill and blast) or situations in which dust control at the source, mobility and flexibility offer value (eg room and pillar mining).

Introduction The subject matter of this paper will be treated under two heads: (1) experimental work and the development of the purification system, and (2) the operation of the commercial plant. During 1927-28, a two-ton slag-retreating plant was in operation at the smelter for experimental purposes. Details of this operation and of the commercial plant are presented in a paper by G. E. Murray, read before the Annual General Meeting of the Institute in April, 1933 (1). A point which has considerable bearing on the subject of the present paper, and which was not emphasized by Mr. Murray, is the concentration of volatile impurities in the zinc oxide fume produced. The result of the operation of the slag fuming furnace is largely to confine in a closed circuit all the minor constituents of the Sullivan concentrates, both lead and zinc. They pass into the feed of the zinc fuming furnace, with the result that all impurities which volatilize-such as arsenic, antimony, tin, fluorine, etc.-report in the zinc oxide product. The accompanying condensed flow-sheet (Figure 1) will illustrate this. The only outlet for impurities which is not shown is the small tonnage which passes the Cottrell plants. The flow-sheet would indicate the possibility of building up a prohibitive concentration of cathodic impurities in the oxide leaching plant feed. However, after three years' continuous operation this has not occurred. Should this condition arise at some future date, discard of some tonnage of blast furnace slag is indicated. In Mr. Murray's paper, the much greater flexibility of blast furnace operation, due to the slag fuming furnace, is stressed, particularly as to the lead content of the slag. The requirements of our lead refinery call for a bullion containing about 0.70 percent antimony.

A study was made of zircon powders bonded with phosphoric acid or aluminium orthophosphate. The influence of strength of solution of the phosphatic binders on the modulus of rupture over a temperature range was investigated. Physical properties of three grades of zircon powder bonded with phosphatic binders were studied at various temperatures. Examination of x-ray diffraction data indicated that phosphates ofzirconia are preferentially formed to phosphates of silica. However, zircon in the presence of excess phosphoric acid also forms phosphates of silica upon heating.Resistance to attack by slags from blast and open hearth furnaces was determined on phosphate-bonded zircon mortars in a cup test with industrially made ladle bricks. Zircon powders bonded with phosphates proved to have high P.C.E. values. The first satisfactory results of a plant trial with phosphate-bonded zircon mortar, used in a steel ladle, are now being assessed in larger scale industrial tests prior to accepting the mortar as a steel plant refractory.

Intensive investigations of domestic manganese deposits were conducted by the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey during the earlier part of the war minerals investigations when there was doubt that the quantity of manganese needed to produce the greatly increased tonnage of steel demanded for war supplies could' to obtained from its customary sources. Domestic deposits of ores that contain sufficient manganese for direct production of ferromanganese essential in steel Manufacture are generally small, and the bulk of the supply is imported. One of the few large deposits of low-grade manganese ore known in the United States is in the Artillery Peale district in southern Mohave County, Ariz. Manganiforous sediments underlie a very large area. Several large groups of claims, covering the most of the manganese-bearing ground, wore assembled in 1929 and 1930. The greater part of this area was leased by the M. A. Hanna Co. in 1937. Investigations by engineers and geologists for this company revealed that the average content of manganese is very low; but that the Maggio Canyon area, about 180 acres, contains higher-grade material. The company put down 28 vertical diamond-drill holds to explore this ground, under the direction of B. N. Wobbor, geologist.

WET processes for the extraction of copper from its ores have of late attracted much attention, especially in Europe, where the use of oupriferous iron-pyrites as a' source of sulphur prevails. These processes present an additional interest, when, as is often the case, the copper-ore's to be treated contain one or both of the precious metals, since the complete separation of these from copper, either in the dry or the moist way, is, as is well known, one of the difficult problems of metallurgy. The principal wet processes hitherto in use for the extraction of copper from its ores, may be included under three classes : I. Those in which the copper in snlphuretted ores is rendered soluble in water by calcining them, after a preliminary roasting which removes the greater part of their sulphur, with a portion of common salt, by which the copper is converted into a chloride (Long-maid and Henderson), or with sulphate of soda, by which sulphate of copper is formed (Monnier). Allied to these is the method by which a portion of the copper is got as soluble sulphate by roasting without addition, a process which is sometimes modified and rendered more complete by re-roasting the lixiviated residues with the addition of a portion of raw sulphuretted ore (Bankart). II. Those methods in which free chlorhydric or sulphuric acid is used to dissolve the copper- from oxidized or roasted ores. These, while simple and efficient, are too costly, except in certain localities where chlorhydric acid is a waste product. Related to them is the plan which consists in exposing the oxidized and moistened ores to the slow action of sulphurous acid mixed with air, by which a soluble sulphate of copper is formed. It has been proposed to decompose the solutions of sulphate or chloride of copper by sulphuretted hydrogen, thus separating the copper as sulphide, and using the liberated acid to dissolve fresh portions of oxidized copper. It is, however, the almost universal practice to throw down the copper from its solutions, however obtained, in the metallic state by the use of iron, either scrap-iron or iron-sponge; although in some instances

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, ferrochromium, alloys, Zimbabwe Zimbabwe Alloys was founded in 1949 by a consortium led by the John Brown Group. It was the first ferrochrome plant in Africa. The establishment of the refinery was necessitated by an increase in world stainless steel demand and the need to reduce cost by shipping alloy rather than chrome ore. The location of the refinery in Gweru was influenced by a number of factors, not least of which were the abundance of chrome ore deposits, access to inexpensive power from Kariba, the availability of reductant coke from Hwange, accessibility to ports (as the town was well served with rail and road networks second to none in the country), and of course cheaper labour costs. The production of Low Carbon Ferrochrome (LCFeCr) was commissioned in 1953 and produced from an Open Arc Furnace with a Submerged Arc Furnace producing Ferrosilicon Chrome (FeSiCr) that is used as a reductant in the production of LCFeCr. An experimental furnace was commissioned in 1958 to help with efficiency and control on larger furnaces. A second Submerged Furnace was commissioned in 1963. Three other Submerged Arc Furnaces were built between 1967 and 1974. Several mines were acquired between 1974 and 1984, as a strategic move to ensure the growth of the refinery. A briquetting plant was commissioned in 1977, enabling the use of friable ores to enhance the capacity of ore supplies and ore cost management. A plant to recover alloy from slag was established in 1994 to capitalize on market demand without large capital outlay that would be required to build other furnaces to increase capacity. Zimbabwe Alloys has created employment opportunities throughout the years. There have been direct employment opportunities at both the refinery and the mining divisions. With time, indirect employment was realised both upstream and downstream of the refining process, enhancing the livelihood of numerous people. Zimbabwe Alloys' involvement with various labour skills has, of necessity, enabled it to develop a culture of safety at work, home, and play. Zimbabwe Alloys has contributed to society by participating and funding various local initiatives primarily to impact positively on societal needs. The latest development was in 1996, when Zimbabwe Alloys entered into a Technical Transfer Agreement with Japan Metals and Chemicals to improve the efficiencies and hence the profitability of the LCFeCr production process. A significant quantity of various alloys has been produced since inception, and significant foreign currency has been earned for the country. This was in spite of challenges that included the cyclic nature of market prices, the upheavals of sanctions affecting the macro-economic environment, and the challenges related to the deteriorating grade of chrome ore and reductant coke.

INTRODUCTION In June of 1992, the Bureau of Reclamation, United States Department of the Interior, awarded the contract for construction of the Sixth Water Aqueduct to the Fedrick-Redpath Joint Venture. This aqueduct, a segment of the Diamond Fork Power System, Central Utah Project, diverts water from Strawberry Reservoir into Sixth Water Creek and, when complete, will replace the old Strawberry Tunnel which was driven in the early 1900's. The new aqueduct is being built primarily as a result of deterioration of the old tunnel, but will also have a higher capacity and more positive control than the old tunnel as well as the capability to incorporate a turbine into the system at a later date. The Fedrick-Redpath Joint Venture is comprised of C.R. Fedrick, Inc. of Novato, California and J.S. Redpath Corporation of Tempe, Arizona. Fedrick, with its experience in pipelines and heavy construction, will construct the 4200 ft surface pipeline and flow control structure; Redpath, the managing partner, performed the underground work consisting of a 600 ft vertical shaft and 3300 ft tunnel. The project is located in the Uintah National Forest, approximately 20 miles east of Provo, Utah at a mean elevation of 7000 feet above sea level.

Diatomaceous earth or diatomite is a sedimentary rock of organic origin that is composed principally of the silicious skeletal remains of diatoms. Diatoms are microscopic single cell acquatic plants that are related to algae. Diatoms first became abundant in the Cretaceous period from about 65 to 135 million years ago. Most of the commercial deposits are of Pliocene through recent age, and are younger than 35 million years. Diatoms are still abundant in present day lakes and seas. The living diatom is supported and protected by two half cell walls or valves united by a connecting band or girdle. These valves are composed of opaline silica extracted from the water in which the diatom lives. After death of the diatom, the silicious remains settle in the lake or sea and accumulate at variable rates approaching several millimeters per year for very active diatom colonies. This accumulation of silicious sediments, after decay of the organism, burial, and uplift, can result in the formation of diatomaceous earth deposits.

A simulation code called SIMJIG and the user interfaces have been developed using discrete element method (DEM) and the .NET platform respectively for the jigging process. DEM platform is used for tracking of particles in the jigging operation. DEM uses the net force balance on the particles to track the trajectory of the particle. Simulation results are compared with experimental results obtained by jigging of low grade iron ore lumps. Two different iron ore samples one from Chatishgarh and one from Odisha were used for the experimental studies. The Alljig? stratification test rig meant for batch laboratory experimental studies has been used in the present work. The behavior of different sizes of material on jigging has been examined. Later, the particle size behavior during jigging at different layers of the jig bed has been studied. Further stratification profile across the jig bed has also been studied. It was observed that simulation results are matching quite nicely with the experimental results. The SIMJIG simulator developed in the present study could be used for predicting the performance of the jigging operation effectively. Prospectivity, the relative value of gold, investor confidence, general economic stability and legislation driven by public attitudes are seen as the major influences on the gold mining industry in New Zealand. Since the 1860s the gold mining industry in New Zealand has been subject to the complex interaction of these influences resulting in three successive boom and bust periods. The booms are related to periods of greatest potential economic growth. The busts are more strongly related to downturns in the economy and falling gold price. The influences may be expressed as trends over time. The role of gold has changed from being a currency base to that of a traded commodity. This change has caused price instability and rapid fluctuations in its value. Increased competing land uses, shifting public attitudes and legislative changes have added to the instability of the industry. Reaction against change is to be expected from the companies until new legislation is seen to be functioning efficiently. Other trends show that there has been a tendency towards reduced exploration and consolidation of active gold mining projects. The future consequences of this are likely to be felt both regionally and nationally as there will be no new discoveries to fill production voids which will develop as currently producing mines close. The review of New Zealand's resource use statutes is nearly complete. A period of legislative stability can now be expected. There are some positive signs that consents will be obtained much more quickly than under previous legislation, particularly by those companies which develop the skills to work with the system. The new regime is about consideration of impacts rather than specific activities. This, together with excellent prospectivity, bodes well for the identification of mineral resources in New Zealand.

The behaviors and stress distributions of the inclined jointed rock masses with different dip angles obtained from DDA are compared to the results of laboratory tests. By calculating the block stress distributions, it is confirmed that DDA can reproduce the arching around the trap door when lowering the trap door. The shapes of arching change with the angles of inclined layers. In addition, the earth pressures acting on the trap door shows non-symmetrical distributions when the layers are not horizontal. The stress concentration occurs in one side of the rock masses close to the trap door. Furthermore, the surface settlements are also related to the inclined angle, and the loosening zone in rock masses can be different from Terzghi’s theory [1]. Since, simulations have good agreements with the laboratory test , it demonstrates the applicability of DDA to explain the mechanical behaviors of tunnel, such as arching phenomenon, non-symmetrical earth pressure distributions acting on the trap door, and the surface settlement profile in the jointed rock masses. Dans cet article est décrite l’étude numérique du perçage d’un tunnel dans un massif de couches rocheuses jointes inclinées. La simulation à l’aide de l’Analyse de Déformation Discontinue (DDA), en faisant varier l’angle d’inclinaison des couches de roche, nous apporte des résultats en termes de distributions de contraintes et de comportement des couches, résultats qui sont ensuite comparés avec des résultats de tests en laboratoire. Les résultats confirment le fait que la DDA est capable de reproduire le phénomène d’arcage autour de la trappe lorsque la trappe s’abaisse. Les formes d’arcage varient selon l’angle d’inclinaison des couches de roche. Par ailleurs, lorsque les couches ne sont pas horizontales, la distribution de pression agissant sur la trappe est assymmétrique. La concentration de contraintes se produit du coté proche de la trappe. De plus, les tassements de surface dépendent eux aussi de l’angle d’inclinaison. En conséquence, les résultats de simulation sont en accord avec les tests en laboratoire, ce qui prouve que la DDA permet d’expliquer des comportements mécaniques du tunnel tels que l’arcage, les distributions assymmétiques de pression du sol sur la trappe, ainsi que le profil du tassement de surface dans la masse de roches jointes. "An approach slab is the roadway segment that immediately follows a bridge intended to provide a smooth transition between the two elements. Some approach slabs have developed rough rideability with time due to differential settlement between the roadway embankment and the bridge. Soils in south Louisiana are generally poor and highly compressible and, therefore, pile-supported approach slabs were occasionally used. Timber piles of variable lengths are driven into the soft soils where no appreciable toe support exists. This resulted in the soils both supporting loads through shaft resistance and yet experiencing long-term consolidation settlement. Field testing and review of the records of over 120 approach slabs constructed in south Louisiana yielded the conclusion that their performance is primarily governed by negative skin friction (downdrag) imposed on the relatively short timber piles. A software (TU-DRAG) was developed to evaluate the deflection profile of a pile-supported approach slab based on its geometry and conditions of the underlying soils. It evaluates the effect of dragload considering the number and spacing of the piles at each transverse row and their variable lengths along the approach slab. TU-DRAG was utilized in the design of two transportation related projects which have been in service for more than 10 years.INTRODUCTIONThe problem of differential settlement at bridge approaches or “the bump at the bridge” has been recognized for many years. Research studies (1986, 1989, 1997, 2009 and 2013) by the Transportation Research Board (TRB) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) provided comprehensive evaluations of the performance of bridge approach slabs by assessing their field conditions and construction and maintenance records. Various states have also performed their own studies to investigate the performance of bridge approach slabs. The studies considered various types of structures including soil- and pile-supported approach slabs, integral bridge abutments and open-end abutments. Recommendations were provided for the design of new structures and for maintaining and repairing existing structures. Guidelines were offered regarding tolerable movements of bridges and their foundations based on measurements of vertical and horizontal movements of 580 bridges Moulton (1986). Vertical and horizontal movements greater than 102 mm (4 inches) and 51 mm (2 inches), respectively, were considered intolerable. Tolerable limits for angular distortion (differential settlement to span length) were suggested to be 1/250 and 1/200 for continuous and simple spans, respectively. It was reported that a differential settlement greater than 13 mm (0.5 inch) at the bridge interface would be sufficient to constitute a “bump” requiring mitigation."

In July of 2013, Lundin Mining acquired the 2,000 tpd Eagle nickel and copper project from Rio Tinto. The project had been put on hold earlier in the year and construction was approximately 50% complete. Lundin immediately accelerated project activities and by September of 2014 the project was constructed, commissioned and ramping up. The newly commissioned facilities went on to reach design throughput, recovery and product quality targets by the end of the year. This was accomplished ahead of schedule and below budget despite numerous obstacles including the worst winter on record in the past 50 years for the area. What led to the success of the project, and in particular the commissioning phase of the project? This paper takes a high level look back and provides an overview of the methodology used, key issues encountered and lessons learned to answer this question.

"In the natural-gas Gasoline industry, the methods used in determining the amount of gasoline in natural gas are many and varied; they include the specific-gravity test, laboratory tests involving absorption, charge in volume of the gas or in the absorption medium, absorption in charcoal with subsequent distillation, compression of the gas which results in the condensation of the gasoline, and the absorption of the gasoline vapors in an absorption oil, from which the gasoline is distilled and measured. Each of these various tests has advantages, and disadvantages. It is however, conceded in the industry that the tests in which the gasoline is obtained and measured as such are the more reliable.This paper deals with certain factors which should be considered in making absorption tests using ""mineral seal oil"" as an absorbent; this method of testing is widely used not only in the field, but in control work in absorption gasoline plants where the gasoline content of the intake and discharge gas is determined daily. In control work it is frequently found that the plant produces more gasoline than the tests show, which gives the plant the appearance of making more gasoline than is actually present in the gas treated, or in other words operating at more than one hundred per cent efficiency. Obviously then, the tests as made in these cases are in error, and in hope of correcting some of these variances, the following factors have been studied at the U. S. Bureau of Mines petroleum station at Bartlesville, Oklahoma."
