This paper describes the Bureau of Mines development of a novel subsidence prediction methodology suitable to the mining and geologic conditions in the Northern Appalachian Coal Region. It describes the computation of vertical and horizontal movements, inclination, curvature, and horizontal strains. The substance of this method is the separation of the effects of lithology by introducing a correlation between hypothetically homogeneous overburden and existing lithologic conditions, while providing for different mining conditions, i.e., underground geometry and overburden thickness. The effects of lithology have been expressed in the form of a variable subsidence coefficient within the subsidence trough. The subsidence co-efficient is considered a constant for other predictive methods. Field data from 16 test sites at 11 Bureau longwall panel studies were used in the analysis. For each panel, the characteristics of the variability of the subsidence coefficient were defined. Regression analysis of the subsidence coefficients from all test sites on their locations relative to the edges of their respective panels yielded a third-degree polynomial equation. The results from additional longwall panel studies, not included in the regression analysis, were used to prove the validity of this method. To facilitate the use of this precalculatlon methodology, a computer program was written in BASIC for use on a personal computer.

The potential use of prereduced pellets in the burden of the blast furnace continues to be a topic of interest. Several excellent papers have been written describing the theoretical and experimental rewards. (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (7) (8) (9) Significant increases in iron output and substantial savings in coke consumption are major advantages over conventional iron oxide pellets. The savings are especially important in areas where good coking coal is at a premium. Lower handling and transportation costs may also be factors favoring prereduction. When considering the overall cost of making and smelting prereduced materials the optimum metallization level becomes significant. An analysis by Agarwal and Pratt of the thermodynamic aspects of blast furnace operation with all prereduced pellets shows that the criteria controlling coke consumption depends upon the degree of reduction and upon the percentage of oxygen (present as FeO) removed by solution loss.(8) The authors state that although the chances of obtaining large fuel savings are greatly improved when metallization is high, reduction to the highest degree, which is costly, may not result in the lowest energy requirement per ton of hot metal; thus, over reduction could possibly result in wasted energy in the blast furnace.

This paper is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on the quarrying, crushing, and grinding of limestone for cement manufacture. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total coats. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual producers, as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. The requirement for a paradigm shift with regard to materials movement in search of low-cost production has not just happened by chance but, rather, has been driven by agents of change that include mining companies, consultants, governments and equipment suppliers. During the past 100 years of mining, surface mining technology has involved humans with hand tools, humans with machinery and unmanned automated equipment. In the past 50 years, surface mining technology has evolved and now takes the form of trucks and loaders (TL), in-pit-crushing conveying (IPCC) and autonomous haulage equipment (AHS).

Experiments dealing with the dissolution of silver by cyanide from various silver minerals-were reported, several years ago.4/ This work showed that the silver in some silver minerals is completely and readily soluble in cyanide solution, whereas other silver minerals must be given special treatment before or during cyanidation to obtain much dissolution of the silver by cyanide. Flotation as a method for treating silver ores has not been studied much, except in the case of base-metal ores carrying silver, Particularly lead-silver ores. However, many mills now are concentrating gold ores by flotation, and when such ores also contain silver the recovery of the silver by flotation is of considerable importance. Moreover, many mines contain ore in which silver is the principal valuable constituent. Some of these ores are amenable to cyanidation, but the cost of a cyanide plant may be prohibitive because of limited ore bodies or other factors. In such instances the successful application of flotation would mean that the property could be operated.

"Exploration and development of mineral resources in developing countries by Canadian-based multinational mining companies is becoming increasingly common. One problem being encountered is that the objectives of the governments of developing countries can differ from those of developed countries. These objectives are not always consistent with maximizing returns from the projects, which can create conflicts between the mining company's responsibility to its shareholders and the desire to be a good corporate citizen. This article discusses how a mining tax regime can be designed to make the social goals of a government consistent with the economic goals of the company.IntroductionAt the recent International Seminar on Mining Taxation organized by CIM and the United Nations there was considerable discussion about the role of international mining companies operating in developing countries. Not surprisingly, given the diversity of backgrounds of individuals attending the Seminar, there were different opinions about what this role should be.Government PositionRepresentatives of governments pointed out the strong desires of their countries for technology, high-level technical training of their workforce, increased employment, and development of social infrastructure. They pointed out that, to a large extent, these objectives could be more efficiently met by mining companies operating in the country than by the governments themselves. For example, a multinational mining company (""MMC"") would have extensive knowledge of the various technologies available, and would have performed a detailed evaluation of the mineral resources before choosing the most cost-efficient technology for that project. They would, therefore be in an ideal position to assist the country in importing and developing such technology. Similarly, the company could provide opportunities for hands-on training, both at the technical and managerial levels, which would otherwise be unavailable to the government."

The recent surge in demand for uranium in the United States, accompanied by a significant increase in price, has resulted in exploration, mining, and milling of lower grade ores than have been exploited in the past. To sustain production levels of uranium with lower grades of feed requires larger tonnage mill operations. Also, because of recent environmental regulations, mill operations must be prepared to properly contain large tonnages of tailings, and recycle, treat and discharge, or evaporate mill effluents. Thus, the advent of lower grade ores, larger tonnage mills, and environmental considerations has made the cost of milling a critical factor in today's uranium production economics in the United States. Three basic milling methods are employed for extracting uranium from ores: 1. Acid leach, countercurrent decantation, and solvent extraction. 2. Acid leach, resin-in-pulp, and Eluex. 3. Alkaline leach, solid-liquor separation, and precipitation. Vanadium often occurs as a valuable by-product in ore deposits located in the Uravan mineral belt in Western Colorado. Also, lesser amounts of vanadium may occur in ores from South Dakota, New Mexico, and Utah. Vanadium is usually extracted in the acid leach solution with uranium and recovered by solvent extraction after recovery of the uranium. By-product recovery of uranium from phosphoric acid and porphyry copper dump leach solutions is now receiving considerable attention. Pilot plant studies are under way and construction of commercial plants is in progress.

Water has played a key role in the Pilbara’s 60-year history of iron ore operations. In contrast to many of the current-day mining environments, iron ore mining was initially hosted by geological formations that were typically above the water table. Such mining operations required no dewatering or dewatering at rates that were less than mine and mining township requirements. The challenge for these operations was not pit dewatering but water supply for mining operations and municipal supply for nascent mining towns.The current industry sees new deposit styles being increasingly targeted, including channel iron and Marra Mamba Formation deposits. These deposits are often lower in the landscape and can require extensive dewatering. Furthermore, increased water demand for ore beneficiation has resulted in major programs of water-supply borefield development. Added to this is the emergence of magnetite projects and their significant levels of water use in ore beneficiation.The large volumes of water that are being extracted to support Pilbara iron ore mining is attracting attention. The Western Australian Department of Water has recently commissioned a study to assess the potential use of surplus mine water as a medium- to long-term supply for irrigated agriculture.This paper outlines the changing landscape of water management in Pilbara iron ore operations and explores strategies for maximising mining productivity. THE paper by C. H., Lieb on the "Economics of Oil-Producing Practice" (June issue, M. & M.) contains much food for thought. The engineers should be gratified that an executive with Mr. Lieb's. responsibility should recognize their standing in the industry. Yet after giving them that recognition, he proceeds to spur them on to greater accomplishments by pointing out that their job is only partly done and in some instances poorly done. The operating policies in this paper when applied to new pools with flowing wells are sound. Neither do I take exception to their application to pumping wells. But I do wish to comment on what lie says about price when applied to the many more wells that are approaching abandonment that is, the small producing wells. Mr. Lieb states in effect that higher prices would be detrimental from the long range viewpoint. I doubt that the present prices of crude will provide an ample return from the hundreds of thousands of small wells that have possibilities of substantial recovery by means of water-flooding, repressuring with gas, and air drive. Probably expenditure for experimental work can he justified, but at this time it must usually be considered as experimental. Recently I visited a property where it was estimated that $250,000 would be spent on a 160-acre tract for flooding purposes. The rate of r e t n r n and amount of profit at today's prices are uncertain. It can be argued that if this type of recovery is not economic with crude at $1 then it can he delayed as it is now possible to secure economically an ample supply of crude from our flush fields. This Bureau of Mines report presents the results of a study and statistical analysis of part of the initial exploration churn-drill sampling and some of the subsequent underground diamond-drill-core sampling in the North are body at the San Manuel copper mine, Arizona. These data were derived from regular exploration and mine sampling, not from special samples obtained solely for statistical analysis. The study was conducted as part of the Bureau's continuing program on sampling-methods research. The major objective of the study was to investigate the feasibility of using the techniques of statistical analysis in evaluating sample and assay data and computing grade and tonnage of Ore from porphyry-type copper deposits. It was recognized that using existing data acquired over a period of several years by different methods would introduce problems and limitations for precise comparisons. However, it was expected that the study would provide some general conclusions and certainly a number of preliminary conclusions on the nature of the mineral characteristics and their effect on sampling procedures, the requirements for sampling deposits of this type, and the comparative results of churn-and diamond-drill sampling in the same area of the deposit. All of this information would be essential for future sampling-methods research for computing grade and tonnage of ore.

"IntroductionTHE ORES treated at the concentrator of the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, Britannia Beach, B.C., have always contained some lead, but it was not until 1950 that the combination of lead headings and lead price was such that recovery of this metal at Britannia became worthwhile. In that year, with the mining of a new orebody, the lead in the mill feed was raised from 0.07 per cent to 0.15 per cent. Chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and pyrite concentrates are produced by flotation at Britannia, •and 95 per cent of the lead in the mill feed reports with the chalcopyrite concentrate, so that the rise in lead headings was reflected almost wholly in the lead content of the copper concentrate. In 1950, investigation was started to determine if some of this lead could be recovered economically."

The Blue Cube Mineral Quantifier Inline (MQi) instrument uses reflective light spectroscopy and advanced chemometrics to measure mineral or elemental grade in a slurry line. The instrument takes scans continuously and sends data to the DCS or PLC control system.Controlling the concentrate grades on a flotation circuit using low-frequency measurements can be difficult or impossible, especially on a circuit that has fast process dynamics. The ability to rapidly measure changes in grade makes it possible to continuously manipulate the flotation circuit operating parameters such as level, airflow and reagent addition set points to optimise plant performance throughout changing conditions.At Barrick’s Porgera mine in Papua New Guinea the flotation circuit feeds sulfide concentrate slurry to a pressure oxidation circuit. In order to maximise gold recovery in the flotation plant and increase performance in the pressure oxidation process, there is a stringent requirement to maintain a stable and optimum sulfur grade. The gold recovery is directly affected by the sulfur grade as most of the gold at Porgera is submicroscopic and associated with the sulfides (disseminated?pyrite).Porgera considered various points in the flotation circuit for installing Blue Cube analysers. This was part of a plant upgrade to improve process control. Due to budget constraints it was decided to initially only install one Blue Cube analyser on the final concentrate stream of the flotation circuit measuring sulfur, sulfides, gold and particle size. The accuracy of the calibration results were very good for all these properties. The sulfur measurement was used in an advanced control system to optimise and stabilise the grade. The paper presents comparisons between mineral grades determined using analytical laboratory analyses and the online Blue Cube data measurements, as well as benefits achieved by measuring grade online. (communication to the Secretary*) :—The characteristics of Professor Home's metallurgical papers are, that he is able, from the mass of confusing evidence on the subject, to make an analysis and present hypothetical and essential principles in concrete form for consideration and discussion. I can appreciate, from the practical side of the subject, the labor of collecting and investigating the data which was essential to prepare the paper. Much of it necessarily came from material of preceding years of manufacture in which time was allowed for chemical reactions of the re-carburizer, and for the elimination of the oxidation-products before teeming the ingots. This practice gave a favorable time-element to free the metal from slag and other impurities— a requisite condition for the production of sound steel in the ingots. But, in allowing them to become cold before they were charged into the furnace, a subsequent time-element entered as a detrimental factor in the development of the pipe or shrinkage-cavities, which gave an ingot-structure deficient in soundness, at least in the upper portion. (The term slag is used in a general rather than in a strictly technical sense.) Traces of manganese sulphide are often associated with manganese silicates in the same thread or seam, and at other places they are separate and distinct. Interpretations from material thus manufactured must be made with due allowances for the methods of fabrication and the requirements of service. The only way we now have to estimate what the degree of soundness of the ingot-structure was, in the early foreign and American manufacture of steel rails, is by examination of the worn and failed material after years of service. LOCATION AND HISTORY The Lakeshore Copper property is located on the Papago Indian Reservation approximately 30 miles South of Casa Grande, Arizona. This major porphyry type deposit was discovered by El Paso Natural Gas Company in 1966. Following an extensive diamond drilling program, El Paso invited several mining companies, including Hecla, to examine the property with a view towards participation. Hecla's examination, and the attendant feasibility studies, led to agreements, which were finalized in September 1969, whereby Hecla would acquire a 50% interest in the property, and would act as operator. The Lakeshore deposit covers an area approximately 3,000 feet in width by 6,000 feet in length. It consists of an upper zone of disseminated copper oxides, averaging approximately 100' in thickness overlying a zone of disseminated copper sulfides up to 1,000 feet thick. Near the base of the disseminated ore is a blanket like zone of high grade copper sulfides, referred to as the tactite ore body. The mine is being developed to produce approximately 6,500 tons per day of oxide ore and 9,000 tons per day of sulfide ore. This represents a total daily production rate of 15,500 tons per day, which will be achieved by underground mining methods using rubbertired dieselpowered mining equipment. DEVELOPMENT LAYOUT The mine is being developed by two parallel 15° decline tunnels. The declines were collared 5,000 feet southeast of the ore body, and are being driven in a northwestery direction, to pass beneath the tactite ore zone. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on many topics relating to the hazards of coal mining, increased production, and protection of the environment. One area of research that has received scant attention in recent years is that of water inflows, probably because few fatalities in the United States have been attributed to them. As mining goes deeper, the problem of water in 1ow could increase dramatically because of adjacent or overlying mines in which huge water pools are impounded. Inaccurate mine maps and ineffective barriers can constitute a serious problem for operators both from gradual inflows and sudden inrushes of water. This report describes a wide but ineffective barrier that permitted an average 240-gpm inflow to a developing mine from an adjacent mine. The anomalous geologic structure that facilitated this leakage is described, demonstrating that size, alone, is no assurance against serious leakage. Some recommendations for managing serious water inflow are included.

INTRODUCTON James Howden first secured an order for two Service Tunnel Boring machines in November 1986. These Tunnel Boring machines were 5.7 and 5.4 metres in diameter and the full length including back up was 215 metres. Manufacture commenced in December 1986 at the Glasgow factories of James Howden & Company with the deliveries to site of the machines in September 1987 and March 1988 respectively. In December 1987 two further orders were secured for the land running tunnels at 8.7 metres diameter. This paper presents some of the challenges in building tunnel boring machines for the Eurotunnel project between Britain and France. The general specifications of the Tunnel Boring machines and length of drives are shown in Appendix 1. DESIGN PARAMETERS The specification given by the Consortium TML on behalf of their client Eurotunnel cleary indicated that cutting of the face should be concurrent with the building of the precast concrete lining rings. In order to do this a telescopic machine was thought to be the best solution. "Efficiency of blast operations depends on fragmentation, overbreak, muckpile profile anddisplacement, vibration, airblast, flyrock and damage to wall or slope stability. To provide all these conditions at the optimal level, determination of rock mass properties (in-situ block size, joint spacing and orientation) is the very first step during design stage of rock blasting. Image analysis software is used not only to determine the fragmentation level of muckpile but also to characterize the bench face. In this study, an image analysis software was used to determine apparent block size of bench face and to measure blast fragmentation of muckpile. The source of errors and the vital points to be taken into consideration were explained for bench face characterization andfragmentation measurement. Since it provides much better results than previous techniques and it is not intrusive to production process, image analysis technique is considered as one of the most efficient and preferred way for fragmentation analysis. Besides these advantages, there are some weak points of image analysis software. Lighting is one of the most important factors for photographs captured for in-situ block size analysis and fragmentation analysis. Lighting determines shadow formation. In an ideal image, particles are clearly delineated by soft shadows. If shadows are too strong (dark), analysis suffers. Appropriate scale should be replaced onto blast muckpile during site measurements. The location of the scale in image affects the results of analysis. Also, the densityand orientation of discontinuities should be considered during application of image analysis technique to characterize bench faces. In this study, image analysis software was applied in thesandstone, limestone quarries of Istanbul region and an open pit boron mine. All image analysis, evaluations and results were made based on the site measurements."

The Sullivan Concentrator treats a complex sulphide ore consisting mainly of galena, marmatite and pyrrhotite. The ore carried minor values in silver, antimony, bismuth, indium and tin. The products of the concentrator are lead, zinc, iron and tin concentrates. The minor metal values other than tin are recovered from the concentrates by the refining processes in the smelter at Trail.The concentrator was completed in 1923 and first operated with a capacity of 2,500 tons per day. In the years 1926 to 1929 changes to equipment and buildings brought the operation up to 5,500 tons per day and then, in the years 1935 to 1945, the daily tonnage was raised to 8,500 tons. After 1945, the rising insoluble content of the ore made it necessary to consider the construction of a Sink-Float plant. At this time consideration was also given to the construction of a new crushing plant underground to replace the rolls crushers and cone crushers located at the concentrator. By 1949, construction of the Sink-Float plant was completed along with a new underground crushing plant, and an electric haulage way between the underground crushing chamber and the Sink-Float plant. The ore was hauled in forty 14-ton car trains which discharged into a 3,000 ton receiving bin by means of an air operated five car rotary dumper. With the start up of the,Sink-Float plant, a 1 ½ ft. by 12 ft. Hardinge rod mill was also brought into operation. The Sink-Float plant made it possible to treat 12,000 tons/day of mine run ore with up to 40% of this being rejected as float.

Gravity concentration at the Pegasus Gold Montana Tunnels Mine was initiated in late June, 1991 with the commissioning of a coarse gold scalping circuit that processes a small portion of the ball mill circulating load. The primary objective for the circuit was to reduce the risk of gold particles advancing to flotation that are too coarse to float. The secondary objective was to enhance overall gold recovery and payable gold ounces in a cost effective manner. The gravity circuit has proven itself to be a major success. The above mentioned goals have been achieved, and they have been maintained at record throughput rates that are 30% higher than when the circuit was commissioned. A number of modifications and improvements were made over the last three years which allowed the gravity circuit to keep pace with the higher tonnage, these are discussed in detail in the body of this paper. The overall approach to gravity concentration at Montana Tunnels has always been to optimize production rather than maximize the gold ounces produced. This philosophy has now yielded a circuit expansion and relocation project which will allow for an estimated 50% increase in gravity gold production, while reducing the overall unit costs of production significantly. This paper will review historical gravity circuit performance, improvements, and the current relocation and expansion project.
