Four taconite plants were studied to establish the extent of hazard to plant personnel which exists based on long-term exposure to noise. The criteria for evaluation include the 90 dBA and 85 dBA summations of partial exposures. Data from extensive interviews were used to determine all work stations or locations which employees occupied and how much time they spent in ach location in a typical working day. Noise level measurements at every designated location were then made. By means of a computer program, these time and noise level data were us d to find the optimum noise reductions which would be required throughout each plant to meet both noise criteria. Subsequently, each plant was examined in detail so that the apparent sources of noise for each of the locations requiring noise reduction could be delineated. In tabular form, this report presents the hazardous locations for each plant, the existing noise level, the optimum noise reduction which would be required to meet the current and proposed laws, and the sources of noise which produce the existing noise level.

The Zurichberg twin track tunnel is the main segment of the Swiss Federal Railway's new expressline. A heavy concrete lining with a circular cross-section was chosen to cope with the swelling tendency of the surrounding rock. The 4,356 m (14,300 ft) long, 11.52 m (38 ft) diameter tunnel was driven using a shielded Robbins TBM. A 1.20 m (4 ft) wide, 25 cm (10 in) thick precast lining was placed from within the shield tail as the excavation progressed. Tunnel excavation and initial lining operation were completed in 18 months, averaging 11.86 m/day (40 ft/day) in two nine hour shifts. After breaking through, the final 28 cm (11 in) thick concrete arch lining was cast in place.

The Henty Gold Mine is a good example of a situation where conditional simulation and optimisation techniques may have useful impact on modelling of mineralisation distribution and ore definition. Much of the gold mineralisation at Henty is concentrated within an alteration zone which is both physically discontinuous and forms only a small fraction of the overall mineralised volume. The alteration units are mappable from diamond drill core and underground workings. Conditional simulation and optimisation techniques for ore definition have found considerable success in the open pit gold mining environment. For many reasons including computational efficiency, lack of consistent geological information, and lack of familiarity with ideas and methods among mine geologists, implementations of these methods in open pit mining have been comparatively simplistic. Modelling is commonly reduced to treating the sample data as a single geologic population. This paper discusses the application of the MP method (a particular implementation of conditional simulation and optimisation) to modelling the distribution of potential ore blocks in the Henty gold mineralisation. The approach allows the mine geologist to model both the spatial geometry of the alteration types and the gold grades associated with each alteration type in a single process. Options allow the geologist to include or exclude underground geological mapping and face sampling depending mainly on the abundance of drill hole sampling and the quality of the face sampling. An optimisation algorithm based on maximisation of profit from mining is used to assist in ore definition.

Every diesel engine emits approximately 100 million nano diesel particles (nDP) per cubic centimetre of raw exhaust. Each nDP has a diameter of between 50 and 70 nano metres or 1/100th the size of red blood cells (diameter of between 6 and 8 microns). When inhaled, some nDP pass through the lungs and penetrate all body tissue [1]. Europe and North America have recognised and are addressing the long term health problems posed by nano diesel particulate matter (nDPM) across their societies [2.3]. Australia has been slow to recognise the issue, at both a societal and mining industry level. There are chronic health effects for every underground miner and serious legal issues for mining companies with increasingly stringent Occupational Health and Safety legislation being implemented at a state level across Australia. This paper will review progress within Australian society and more particularly the underground hard rock mining industry, particularly in Western Australia (WA).

This paper reviews the circumstances that led to the development and construction of a commercial-scale vertical shaft carbonizer at Conmore, Alberta. This form coking process may be regarded as having potential application in other areas. Coal pelletizing offers a promising method of decreasing coal agglomeration costs under certain circumstances. Pellets can be rolled easily from -35-mesh coal, provided that a minimum of -200-mesh coal is present. Bentonite was found to be the best binder and was most effective when added in amounts of about 2 per cent. The water content of the coal pellets was observed to vary from 18 to 23 per cent. As a by-product of this investigation, it seems possible that fine coal could be converted into stoker feed by this process. A short investigation of the effect of heating rate on the carbonization of pellets was conducted. "The Cobalt embayment is a large domain of Paleoproterozoic clastic sedimentary rocks that unconformably overlies the Archean Abitibi greenstone belt. Regionally extensive sills and dikes of Nipissing diabase, emplaced circa 2219 Ma, occur throughout the embayment and are the preferential host to gold-bearing polymetallic vein systems on the Merico-Ethel property, near the northeastern margin of the Cobalt embayment. These gold-bearing, polymetallic veins are predominantly east-west-trending, steeply dipping, discordant calcite- quartz vein systems that formed close to the time of crystallization (within ~15 m.y., based on Pb-Pb ages) of the Nipissing diabase. The ore mineralogy is complex in character, typically comprising sulfides, arsenides, native metals (gold and silver), and specular hematite, preferentially concentrated along the interface between silicate and calcite gangue. A simplified sequence of mineral deposition in the veins is: (1) "Early-stage" pyrite ± chalcopyrite hosted in quartz ± chlorite gangue; (2) "Main-stage" polymetallic (Cu + Co + As + Ag + Au + Bi ± Pb ± Ni ± U) sulfides, arsenides, and native metals hosted in calcite gangue; and (3) "Late-stage" calcite flooding ± galena. Wall-rock alteration in Nipissing diabase is restricted to narrow (<5 cm) haloes of calcite-chloriteepidote- bearing assemblages, whereas a weak alteration halo of specular hematite, calcite, and allanite-epidote has been observed in the surrounding sedimentary rocks. In terms of their age, geology, mineralogy, paragenesis, and morphology, the gold-bearing vein systems at Merico-Ethel closely resemble the silver-sulfarsenide vein deposits of the historic Cobalt and Gowganda mining camps. These observations indicate that the Au-bearing veins are variants of the Ag-vein systems and as such, have a common genesis belt. "Attempts to reduce the energy requirements of water recovery in the process industries have resulted in the development of techniques to freeze and purify aqueous solutions that take advantage of local climatic conditions. Natural freezing is a technique by which aqueous solution is exposed to freezing air temperatures, resulting in the production of a layer of ice on the surface. As the ice layer tends to exclude solute, a concentrated solution is formed. However, due to dendritic ice growth along the advancing growth front, small quantities of solution are trapped within the ice, decreasing the purity of the water recovered. The ice produced can then be allowed to thaw in order to recover the water using low grade plant heat. As the more concentrated parts of the ice melt first, a purer ice remains. In this study, 0.5 molal magnesium sulfate solution was frozen under simulated natural freezing conditions at temperatures between –1 and –6°C. The ice produced was thawed at either room temperature or 50°C. Up to 40% of the water was recovered with a separation efficiency of above 95% when thawing at room temperature.INTRODUCTION Advances in refrigeration technology have made low-temperature separation processes increasingly appealing to an energy-conscious society. The latent heat of freezing of water is about seven times smaller than the latent heat of evaporation providing freezing with a strong thermodynamic advantage over the traditional evaporation-based processes. The result is the development of a wide variety of processes that fall under the term Freeze Concentration (FC), which describes a variety of techniques in which an aqueous solution is concentrated by the creation and subsequent removal of ice (Williams et al., 2015).FC processes exploit the freezing behaviour of aqueous solutions as dictated by their respective water-salt phase diagram. When, for example, a solution of magnesium sulfate is cooled to a temperature below its freezing point but above its eutectic temperature of –4.1?C (Figure 1) then, if the concentration of MgSO4 is less than the eutectic concentration (about 1.7 m), ice will form until the solution concentration reaches its equilibrium concentration at the given temperature on its phase diagram. If the concentration is greater than the eutectic concentration, MgSO4 solid will precipitate until the concentration reaches equilibrium. It is for this reason that ice can be selectively produced in FC processes (Randall & Nathoo, 2015)."

Purification of copper electrolyte at Naoshima is carried out by two stage liberation to completely depress copper and impurity ions followed by concentration of the solution to produce crude nikel sulfate as by-product. A new nickel recovering process has been developed and pilot tested recently. It consists of the following process steps.; neutralization of spent electrolyte from liberation section to remove free acid and most part of remaining impurity ions, refining and nickel concentration by solvent extraction, and crystallization of pure nickel sulfate from concentrated strip solution. This paper describes the results of laboratory and pilot plant tests, then briefly discusses feasibility of the proposed process.

This paper describes two-lane dual motorway tunnels under construction in Bergen. The tunnels are part of a by-pass motorway system throuth the most congested area of the city of Bergen. The tunnels are unique due to their length, heavy traffic, longitudinal ventilation system and the use of a tunnel boring machine, or "TBM", to excavate through hard rock. The tunnels are being built by The Norwegian Public Road Administration and the TBM was delivered by the Robbins Company. The diameter of the TBM is 7.8 m and the tunnel profile is cut by conventional drill and blasting methods in the tunnel&apos;s lower half to attain a two lane motorway tunnel. This paper also describes proposed fjord crossings along the Norwegian west coast where the TBM may be used due to its great advantages in comparison to conventional drill and blasting methods.

I work for the State of Washington as an Explosives inspector. My paper will describe the mission of the Wa. State Dept. of Labor pertaining to explosives and the regulation of explosives in the State.Blasting safety is high on the public safety list and the regulation of explosive use and storage has been mandated through legislature. The Dept. considers pro-active partnering forexplosive safety preferable to after-the-fact citations for non-compliance.In some cases, the Dept. will issue civil citations with monetary penalties, meant to be a deterrant, of course, to blasters who choose not to comply with the explosive regulations of the State.The Dept. has also revoked and suspended blasting licenses. In some instances, the Dept. has allowed recipients of citations with monetary penalties to reduce the amount paid by attending technical training classes. The idea here, is to reduce the chance of reoccurence of unsafe blasting practices. The State of Washington partners with MSHA in the regulation of explosives use and storage in mines, pits and quarries in the Stateas well as working closely with law enforcement, State and local fire marshals, ATF,and is active in ISEE in part of it’s ongoing effort to promote explosive safety and establish communications in a nonadversarial way with explosives users. My paper will include some statistics on licensing in the State, pounds of explosives used, inspection numbers, numbers and types of complaints with information from the inspections resulting of these complaints. My paper will include examples of storage, both good and bad, examples and pictures of fly rock incidents, accidents, near-miss close calls, break-ins, thefts, and abandoned explosives. This paper may also include a brief summary of my opinion of explosive regulation and my job as a regulator, including examples of high and low points of the job, joys and frustrations.

1N FLOTATION, copper sulphate is used universally for the activation of sphalerite and marmatite and, to some extent, for the activation of other minerals. The copper activated surface readily adsorbs standard collectors such as the xanthates and dialkyl dithiophosphates whereas untreated zir~ sulphide does not. With the host of reagents available, making a mineral float is seldom difficult. The problem is to achieve selective flotation. In zinc flotation, the great value of copper sulphate results from its ability to activate zinc sulphide preferentially to gangue minerals. At the Sullivan Concentrator of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited, the most abundant gangue mineral in the lead-zinc ore is pyrrhotite, and the zinc mineral is marmatite of somewhat variable zinc to iron ratio. For this Cominco study, selectivity between marmatite and pyrrhotite was therefore the most interesting aspect of copper sulphate activation.

Although additive manufacturing is fast gaining traction in the industrial world as a reputable manufacturing technique to complement traditional mechanical machining, it still has problems such as porosity and residual stresses in components that give rise to cracking, distortion, and delamination, which are important issues to resolve in structural load-bearing applications. This research project focused on the characterization of the evolution of residual stresses in Ti-6Al-4V extra-low interstitial (ELI) additive-manufactured test samples. Four square thin-walled tubular samples were deposited on the same baseplate, using the direct energy deposition laser printing process, to different build heights. The residual stresses were analysed in the as-printed condition by the neutron diffraction technique and correlated to qualitative predictions obtained using the ANSYS software suite. Good qualitative agreement between the stress measurements and predictions were observed. Both approaches revealed the existence of large tensile stresses along the laser track direction at the sections that were built last, i.e., centre of the top layers of the samples. This in addition leads to large tensile stresses at the outer edges (corners) which would have the effect of separating the samples from the baseplate should the stresses exceed the yield strength of the material. Such extreme conditions did not occur in this study, but the stresses did lead to significant distortion of the baseplate. In general, the microstructures and spatial elemental mapping revealed a strong correlation between the macro-segregation of elemental V and the distribution of the β-phase in the printed parts.

The scope of this project was to research, develop and eventually produce a personal occupational hygiene and safety exposure monitor system to assist in recording and analysing various stress factors that could affect the health, wellness and safety of employees, i.e. that could result in injury or ill health of workers, create stress build-up within individual workers that could negatively affect worker alertness and safety, and, may even result in permanent disability or death. Utilized systems at the time were all reactive, whereas the DOHEMS (Proactive Digital Occupational Hygiene and Safety Exposure Monitoring) System enabled the measurement of exposure (and associated risk) in a proactive manner via real-time exposure and digitized recordings. The idea of the development was to create a unit that is so cost effective, small and light that every worker can use a system on a daily basis. The development will eventually replace current, bulky and expensive monitoring equipment. The device must be a portable battery operated device and monitor the immediate working environment by periodic sampling for vibration, noise, toxic gasses (NO/NOX/CO/VOC, etc.), body temperature and heart rate. The samples must be time and date stamped, utilizing a real-time clock (RTC) synchronized with the closest regional secondary time source and related to synchronized real-time video captured samples. These samples are then recorded onto a rugged non volatile storage device with the capacity to store a vast number of samples covering the entire working shift of eight (8) hours plus. The system has been fitted with a clear visual local alarm indication system, indicating any excessive exposures or stresses, for the worker?s supervisor to respond to. This system allows for a pro-active approach. The system is also a wireless system (to the external environment) so as to not affect the mobility of an employee and flameproof to allow for use in explosive environments. IN underground mining recent trends toward mining large tonnages of low-grade ore have created, among other things, a need for cheaper and more flexible ore transport. A relatively new development has been the adaptation of shaker conveyors to meet this need. Although widely used in coal mining, only in the last few years have shaker conveyors been used in underground metal mining. The equipment consists of a driving engine, either electric or air powered, upon which is mounted a drive trough supported in ball-bearing frames. The trough line, or conveying medium, is made up of a number of sections, each section connected to another, usually with bolts. The length of each trough section is controlled by the length that can best be handled underground, but is usually from 9 to 13 ft over-all. The length of a complete conveyor line is determined by the character and weight of material to be handled as well as by the size of the ore body. Trough lines vary in lengths from 100 to 300 ft and the trough has a cross-section area of 127 sq in., and is 22 in. wide by 6 ½ in. deep.

"INTRODUCTION Information on the gaseous products from the detonation of explosives has been obtained in two ways. In the first, the atmosphere in mines is analyzed after blasting, and in the second, the gases found after detonating an explosive in a testing apparatus are analyzed. The Bureau of Mines, in a cooperative research 3/ that compared data obtained in the field with those obtained in the testing station, showed that the results were not in entire agreement. The production of carbon monoxide was found to be governed chiefly by the oxygen balance of the explosive, but the production of oxides of nitrogen did not change in so simple a manner. Because of the increasing interest in correlations between the composition of the explosive and the production of toxic gases, it seemed desirable to continue the investigation.PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATIONAs field tests are both time consuming and expensive and as field results are affected by factors that are not always under control of or clearly evaluated by the operator, the purpose of this investigation is to develop a testing-station procedure that will reproduce the gaseous products quantitatively under known conditions analogous to those that may be expected in the field. In addition, the factors affecting the formation of toxic gases, particularly oxides of nitrogen, will be studied,"

Gas handling at Magma Copper Company&apos;s, San Manuel smelter receives process gas from a flash smelting furnace and four copper converters. The major gas handling equipment consists of four electrostatic precipitators and a sulfuric acid plant. Process vessels in gas handling are typically confined spaces. Lethal gases., mechanical and chemical hazards, and the difficulty of rescue, should an accident occur, makes this area a must in the safety plan. The presence of hazardous chemicals and explosive gases in process vessels and piping are of major concern when repairs are required. Proper job procedures are critical to prevent injury during repairs. This includes plant employees and contractors who are likely to be unfamiliar with the hazards involved. The safe operation of a gas handling operation must include the functions of operations employees on a daily basis. This includes a safe working environment and involvement. of all employees in the safety program. If an injury does occur quick medical response is critical to prevent serious injury. Medical responders must be adeqliately trained and prepared to treat the injured person without becoming victims themselves.. The methods used at Magma copper Company to deal with these safety problems are the focus of this presentation.

"Driven piles were selected to support the Fraser Heights Bridge bents. Piles were a key component of the top-down construction approach, which was adopted for minimizing potential impacts on an environmentally sensitive wetland. Project requirements mandated verification of pile capacities using dynamic methods. More than 40 Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) tests were performed. The subsurface conditions were highly variable. On the east side, piles extended through loose sands, soft silts/clays, and two peat layers and were founded in glacial till-like soils at about 45 m depth. However, on the west side, till-like materials were so shallow that it was difficult to drive the piles sufficiently deep to obtain the necessary lateral support. This paper provides an overview of the geotechnical considerations of the bridge design and top-down construction approach, and expands on the presentation of PDA results and how they compared to pile capacity estimation methods and parameters recommended in the applicable design codes.INTRODUCTIONThe Fraser Heights Bridge (FHB) was a component of the Fraser Heights Connector (FHC), a 2 km section of the South Fraser Perimeter Road (SFPR), constructed as part of the Port Mann/Highway 1 (PMH1) Improvement Project. The FHC is located in northeast Surrey BC (Fig. 1).Two major design and construction determinants were: 1) a mandated tight schedule to provide a non-tolled alternative to a new toll bridge; and, 2) an obligation that construction had to occur with minimal impact on the environmentally sensitive wetland the FHB crossed, including limiting the footprint of the permanent and temporary works to less than 45 m2, and prohibiting construction access onto the wetland. Construction equipment was only allowed on the wetland on temporary trestles or on the finished structure. This latter requirement resulted in the bridge being constructed span by span, using a top-down approach."
