The Iberian Pyrite Belt (SW Spain and Portugal) contains one of the largest reserves of pyrite in the world with mining activities dating back to prehistoric times. About one hundred abandoned mine wastes and galleries release a huge acidity and metal load to the Tinto and Odiel rivers. Once the mining activity is over, polluting discharges can persists for decades or even centuries with no specific responsible entity. In-situ passive remediation technologies are especially suitable for these orphan sites. The concept is to insert a reactive porous material in the natural flow path of contaminated surface and ground waters, and it is implemented through infiltration ponds and reactive barriers, respectively. Calcium carbonate pea-size gravel is the common alkalinity supplier to neutralize acidity and precipitate metals. These remediation systems have been traditionally implemented in coal mines. However, the acid drainages from the Iberian Pyrite Belt contain metal concentrations one to two orders of magnitude higher than those from coal mines and require special designs to avoid quick clogging or passivation (coating) of the grains of reactive material. To overcome these problems, a Dispersed Alkaline Substrate (DAS) mixed from fine-grained limestone sand and a coarse inert matrix (e.g. wood chips) was developed. The small grains provide a large reactive surface and dissolve almost completely before the growing layer of precipitates passivates the substrate. The high porosity and the dispersion of nuclei for precipitation on the inert surfaces retard clogging. However, limestone dissolution only raises pH to values around 6.5, which is sufficient to precipitate the hydroxides of trivalent metals (Al, Fe), but it is not alkaline enough to remove divalent metals. Magnesium oxide, which hydrates to Mg hydroxide upon contact with water, buffers the solution pH between 8.5 and 10. A DAS system replacing limestone with caustic magnesium oxide has been tested to be very efficient to remove divalent metals (Zn, Cd, Mn, Cu, Co, Ni, Pb) from drainage previously treated with limestone.

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. It is a pleasure, for several reasons, to be here at this 13th International Conference on Ground Control in Mining. Of course it's always a pleasure to be able to see and reacquaint myself with many long-time friends; but it's also a pleasure, or 1 should say worthwhile, because I take something back with me, some knowledge about mining that lets me do my job better and more safely. if I can do that, I've accomplished my purpose in being at a conference such as this. This conference is a little different, though. I have to earn my stay. I have to earn it by telling you a story; a story about mining through a mile of rock to get from one coal seam to the same seam on the other side of an ancient river channel; a story about mine personnel taking over the job from a contractor; a story about having to mine through two faults after the hard part was supposed to be over, but, most importantly, it's a story about how it was accomplished successfully and safely by a group of ordinary coal miners possessed with determination, belief in themselves, and a "can do" attitude. If you can take any part of my story and use it to do your job better and more safely, then I will have accomplished my purpose in being here today. Kerr-McGee Coal Corporation's Galatia Mine is located in Southern Illinois near the town of Harrisburg in Saline County, about 350 miles south of Chicago and 120 miles southeast of St. Louis. Construction of the mine began in 1982, and the first coal was shipped in 1984 from the Harrisburg No. 5 Seam, 550' below the surface. Mining began in the Herrin No. 6 Seam, 100' above the No. 5 Seam, on April 1, 1985. Mining in both seams began by using the room-and-pillar method. In 1989, the No. 6 Seam was converted to longwall mining, as was the No. 5 Seam in 1992. Today, all mining is done by the longwall method except for the required development work, which is performed by continuous miners. A heavy-media preparation plant with a 4.2 million-ton annual clean-coal capacity processes the coal. By the end of 1994, with annual production now exceeding 4 million tons, we will have shipped over 30 million tons of steam and metallurgical coal throughout the United States and the world. Most of the coal has been used as the primary source of fuel to generate electricity for the city of St. Louis. The No. 5 Seam coal can be used as a semi-soft coking coal or as a high-Btu, relatively low-sulfur steam coal. Its use allows utilities to comply with Phase I of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 without installing flue gas desulfurization units or blending with other coals. The Herrin No. 6 Seam is a high-Btu, medium-sulfur steam coal that requires blending to meet Phase I requirements. Because the No, 6 Seam coal does not meet the Clean Air Act Amendments' Phase I compliance standards, we were forced to cease mining operations in the No. 6 Seam, leaving 170,000,000 tons of minable coal in the ground. Last month the Galatia Mine became a single-seam operation mining the Harrisburg No. 5 Seam only. The Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 and the resultant S02 emission limitations on electrical power generation plants effectively eliminate, beginning in 1995, the near-term potential for profitable mining of the Galatia Mine's high sulfur Herrin No. 6 Seam coal. Because of the Clean Air Act Amendments, it is virtually impossible to market high-sulfur coals like the No. 6 coal unless the mine location and mining conditions enable greatly depressed sales prices to cover costs. The theme of this conference is blasting productivity. This article only considers the technology aspect of this theme, and in particular, the collection and analysis of experimental data. In many cases, field trials are set up to collect data on variables such as fragmentation and vibration with the aim of comparing different explosive products and/or blast designs. An important aspect of such trials is the collection of sufficient data to draw sound conclusions. In this regard, there is no doubt that the scatter in real data is the root cause of all problems of obtaining misleading results due to an insufficient number of trials. This article shows that the typical one-off trial has a high probability of producing misleading information, which could be considered to be worse than having no information at all. Assuming that sufficient data has been collected, this article also highlights the methods that can be used to make the most of that data. These methods include the application of appropriate statistics that are dependent on the nature of the scatter in the data, and the use of some of the more recent filtering and spectral approaches that can be used to reduce the noise in measured blast signals and increase the resolution of their spectral characteristics.

Reliability, flexibility, redundancy, and cost-effectiveness are key in selecting and implementing inte- grated systems. Both wired and wireless components are used to deliver custom solutions and can involve interconnectivity between backbones. Systems integration is important as industry adopts proven technologies from other industries. Case stud- ies are given showing how tailor-made approaches deliver needed functionality, with varying degrees of com- plexity, in various classifications of environment, in order to meet a project need.

"Bi- and multilateral banks as well as export credit agencies in the OECD countries, but also numerous commercial banks, last year committed themselves to compliance with the World Bank’s standards. These environmental and social guidelines, also known as the Safeguard Policies, are the strictest international standards in the area of financing of major investment projects. The Safeguard Policies are procedural and quality guidelines by means of which socially and environmentally relevant impacts can be taken into account in the planning and implementation phase of a project. Objectives of the Bank Safeguard Policies are to ensure that environmental and social issues are evaluated in decision-making, to reduce and manage risk of projects and programs, and to provide a mechanism for consultation and disclosure of information. They are often referred to as the "10+1 Safeguard Policies," since ten of the guidelines address environmentally and socially relevant issues, while one guideline is exclusively concerned with public participation ("Public Disclosure"). In the presentation, the transparency of risk management measures and emergency response plans in pipeline projects will be discussed as an indicator of sustainability. The discussion is to be carried out on the basis of the results of an evaluation of several major pipeline projects, which have been financed at least in part by multilateral banks over the past few years. The controversies surrounding some of these projects due environmentally and socially relevant impairments connected with the investments have also been addressed by the Extractive Industry Report of the World Bank. Pipeline construction was the investment type chosen for the examination to be presented here, since pipelines frequently start in remote, unspoiled regions, and their routes often cross various natural zones and areas with various social structures. The question of safety during construction and operation of the line is always central to these projects; not only for the responsible authorities but also for other societal groups involved, such as environmental associations."

"The relevancy of complex minerals treatment is constantly increasing taking into account mineral resources depletion. Different refractory ores and concentrates, oxidized and polymetallic ores, as well as metallurgical products (slags) can be assigned to such mineral type. The treatment of such products via conventional flowsheets requires considerable capital and operational costs and does not always provide high recovery level of valuable components into a saleable product. Therefore, considerable amount of ores and metallurgical products are not treated, or treated inefficiently. One of the most promising approaches that allows economic treatment of refractory products is their ultrafine grinding down to 5-20 µm with subsequent processing or hydrometallurgy. Horizontal bead mills - the IsaMillTM, developed by Xstrata Technology, received their wide application in mining industry. Standard testing is performed under laboratory conditions in an M4 IsaMillTM (volume - 4 liters) to define the parameters of fine grinding. This mill completely simulates the operation of full scale industrial mills up to 50 m3 in volume (up to 8000 kW motor). The paper describes fine grinding technology performed in bead mills, and the importance of testing according to a certified method for industrial equipment selection. The paper contains description of promising directions of fine grinding technology application for several projects in Russia and Kazakhstan."

"Abstract The Deep Mixing Method (DMM) represents a viable solution to improve the adverse geotechnical properties of foundation soils. Differences and the importance of performing pre-construction laboratory and field tests will be highlighted. Comparative analyses and interpretations between the various lab and field stages, along with accumulated information about soil properties and QC results, allowed fine-tuning of the production parameters throughout almost the entire project.Two projects where the US Army Corps of Engineers selected the Deep Mixing Method (DMM) for the required stabilizations, and a third project completed in Italy, will be illustrated:•,?the LPV 111 Project (New Orleans - LA – USA); DMM was used for groundimprovement/foundation strengthening and consequently stabilize and support the burden of the new levee.•,the Rio Puerto Nuevo Project (San Juan - PR - USA); DMM was applied to improve the soils adjacent to a 90” forced sewer main relocation and to improve the soils for the base of a new drainage channel•,the new Italian high speed railway project (Florence Italy); DMM technology was applied to realize a a TBM break in/break out, foreseen originally by jet-grouting.IntroductionThe Deep Mixing Method (DMM) represents a viable solution to improve the adverse geotechnical properties of foundation soils. Development of a global failure criterion for rocks has been a desired goal in rock mechanics. Due to variations in factors affecting rock specifications and their mechanical properties, proposing a single failure criterion suitable for all rock types has proven to be unachievable. The theoretical failure criteria do not fit the real data correctly. Amongst empirical criteria, the Bieniawski criterion has demonstrated an acceptable agreement with laboratory generated data. It has been experienced that the ability to estimate rock strength via the modified form of this criterion is significantly improved. Based on the modified Bieniawski criterion and using VB.net, an associated Microsoft Windows program named 'RAMOCE' has been developed. The inputs of RAMOCE can be triaxial compressive strength data, Bieniawski parameters of a specific rock or the type of given rock. Based on input data, potential outputs of the program are Bieniawski's rock parameters, sensitivity analysis of the effective parameters, rock failure prediction and defining the type of given rock.

The robustness of the large-sections correction procedure, Hill's fast approximation, Barbery's correction and the PARGEN correction was examined by comparing their ability to reconstruct the true liberation distribution using sectioning data from computer-generated spheres. The results indicate that the flexibility of a correction procedure is related to the assumptions it makes about the continuity of the liberation distribution, locked-particle characteristics and ore texture. Overall, the large-sections procedure appeared to be the most generally applicable. The Hill fast approximation performed well, but this was probably because it partially incorporates the sphere model; the performance of the PARGEN and Barbery corrections varied from case to case.

"The extremely low permeability of the water-carrying beds in the nevonian formation of the potash district of Saskatchewan does not permit the injection of cement or chemicals to seal off sufficient water from the shafts to guarantee the safety of the mine. Based on many years of experience with wet shafts in the German and French potash mining industry, Alwinsal Potash of Canada Ltd. decided to have their potash mine shaft near Lanigan, Sask., which was completed in September of 1967, lined by means of an absolutely watertight lining of combined concrete and steel-plate construction.This shaft lining, consisting of two steel shells of welded construction with concrete filled in between, has proved itself before in the German coal mining industry. It guarantees a permanently dry shaft. With this type of lining, time-robbing and very often abortive injections are superfluous and the regular repair and adjusting work as well as the corrosion of conveyances and ropes can be avoided. Above all, however, the danger of a water inrush into the shaft is abolished completely."

ABSTRACT: Despite many years of practical applications in mineral processing plants, the potential of column flotation has still not been fully exploited. The challenge in measuring some key variables is certainly an important contributing factor to this situation. Reliable online measurement of varibles, such as the froth depth, bias, gas hold-up, frother concentration, bubble surface area flux, and bubble size distribution, provides opportunities for the application of various advanced control strategies and real-time optimization based on an economic criterion. For several years, Université Laval’sLaboratoire d’observation et d’optimisation des procédés researchers have been working on these opportunities. "In response to numerous inquiries regarding tests and analyses of minerals and related inorganic materials; Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6999, ""Laboratories That Make Fire Assays, Analyses, and Tests on Ores, Minerals, Metals and Other Inorganic Substances,"" by C. W. Davis and M. W. von Bernewitz, was published .in 1938 and revised in 1939 (I. C. 6999R). In this paper on analytical and testing laboratories, the original text has been rewritten and expanded, and a table has been added, in which are listed laboratories prepared to offer a number of special testing services in addition to ordinary assays and chemical analyses. The arrangement of laboratories on, a geographical basis has been maintained.This circular is compiled as a public service, and none of the laboratories listed herein is recommended over any other,These lists were compiled from questionnaires sent to organizations whose work is connected with mineral and metallurgical testing. The response in general was very satisfactory, and the author takes this opportunity to express her appreciation to the officers of the listed laboratories for their cooperation.Acknowledgment is also made of the valuable assistance of the members of the technical staff particularly Morris Slaving/ of the Eastern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at College Park, Md., in the preparation of the questionnaire and technical descriptions.Many mineral samples are sent to government agencies in the National Capital with the request that they be assayed or chemically analyzed. It should be emphasized that there is no place in Washington D. C. where assays and quantitative analyses are made for the public b the Federal Government.Virtually all of the States maintain a bureau of mines, a geological survey, or some similar organization, frequently at the State University, where minerals found by residents of the State will be identified free of charge. Usually, a charge is made for assays. Specific tests, as on clays, are made by some of these offices.The Federal Bureau of Mines, although it attempts to avoid duplication of services rendered by State Bureaus, is always glad to give advice as to prospective markets. It does not compete with private assayers and chemists, but with respect to samples sent to its field laboratories, it does offer to identify them as far as this can be done by inspection and simple optical and chemical tests. This examination is usually sufficient to indicate whether the material has commercial value, or at least if the expense of an assay would be warranted. Except in connection with its own technical investigations, no assays or other special tests are made by the Bureau of Mines.The Federal Geological Survey and the National Museum also make simple tests of specimens as a public service. Neither of these bureaus nor the Bureau of Mines, however, can afford to render such services on long suites of specimens submitted by mineral dealers, well drillers, or others, when such work can be done regularly by commercial concerns."

A new high-temperature soft soldering system has been developed by the Bureau of Mines for use on copper, copper alloys, and low-carbon steel; the method is applicable to automobile radiators and home appliances. The system uses a unique sacrificial metal coating method to promote spontaneous wetting and spreading of zinc and zinc alloy solder: on metallic substrates. The 10-5 to 10-6 cm thick, electroplated or sputtered, sacrificial nickel coating is absorbed by the molten filler alloy during soldering and produces a direct solder-substrate metallic bond. Preliminary measurements on butt joints with copper members give tensile strengths up to 22,000 psi at room temperature using 95 Zn-5 Al alloy as solder. Spontaneous wetting, spreading, and capillary penetration are extremely rapid and produce joints as easily as 50-50 tin-lead solders. Recrystallization or annealing of the wrought copper joint members is negligible at the soldering temperatures of 450° to 490° C and lower. A list of fluxes and solder alloys is included in the report.

The organization of the Explosives Division is indicated by the accompanying chart (fig. 1). As this has been discussed in a previous report3/, it will not be considered further in this report. The activities of the various units are outlined below. I. INFLAMMABILITY OF GASES AND VAPORS4/ Determination of the Explosion Hazards of Combustible Gases and Vapors Found in Mines and Industries The Explosives Division maintains, at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station, a laboratory specially equipped for the determination of the explosion hazards of combustible gases and vapors. Of particular importance, is the determination of the chemical composition within which explosions may occur and beyond which there is no danger of explosion, combustion or inflammation. These limits, known as the limits of inflammability, as determined by this and other laboratories, have been compiled in Bulletin 279 of this Bureau. The last revised edition (1931) of this bulletin has been exhausted. Since it was published, the Pittsburgh laboratory has determined the limits of about 40 combustibles and has ascertained more precisely ant accurately many previously published limits.
