"This paper has outlined forms of Au & Ag losses in copper smelting process and methods for increasing Au & Ag recovery, analyzed factors influencing Au & Ag recovery in copper converting process, presented Au & Ag behavior in copper electrorefining process, and reviewed effect of current density/electrolyte circulation rate during electrolysis and surface finish of cathode on Au & Ag losses. Measures and research direction for decreasing Au & Ag losses in electrolysis have also been introduced. Based on Au & Ag behavior in copper electrorefining process and previous studies by others, new approach for increasing Au & Ag recovery in copper smelter has been discussed. And brief comparison has made between continued multiplication method and equilibrium method application in the case of calculation of Au & Ag recovery in copper smelter.IntroductionAs gold and silver are the major by-products from copper smelting process, efficient Au & Ag recovery has become one of the key approaches for copper producers to increase economic efficiency. With similar physicochemical properties, Cu, Au and Ag belong to the first subgroup of elements in the same periodic table. Au and Ag will be enriched into Cu phase firstly when both matte-slag phase and copper-matte phase appear in copper smelting process. However, great changes have taken place in Au & Ag proportions into individual phase due to changes of physicochemical conditions in each smelting process. Metallurgists at home and abroad have carried out a great deal of pilot plant tests and laboratory tests in order to increase Au & Ag the former Soviet Union with regard to Au & Ag losses in copper smelting process in the 1970s and 1980s, and he proposed solutions to increase Au & Ag recovery in copper metallurgical plants. As more than 20 years passed, Jingchun Lu's paper, Discussion on Increasing Au & Ag Recovery in Copper Smelting System, remains as a literature of the most comprehensive study. Based on Jingchun Lu's literature, the authors of this paper discussed new approaches to increase Au & Ag recovery in copper metallurgical plants with combination of many researches done by other researchers for over 20 years."

Unmanned mining technology in underground mines offers high efficiency, safety, and low cost. However, ground operators face challenges in accurately perceiving the underground environment through videos. This paper presents an augmented reality (AR) platform developed to enhance the unmanned mining process. The platform uses cameras and 5G technology to transmit high-fidelity video streams to the ground, where key targets are identified and virtual models are registered in the video to enhance the real scene. Tests in the Xinli stope of the Sanshandao gold mine showed the platform’s effectiveness in improving ground operators’ perception and production efficiency.

"Introduction Byron Creek Collieries Limited Corbin mine is located in southeastern British Columbia approximately 180 air kilometres southwest of Calgary (Fig. I), twenty four kilometres south of Highway No. 3 via a newly constructed provincial road (Fig. 2). The development of the area began July 30, 1905, when D.C. Corbin, a prominent businessman from the northwestern U.S., and his associate E.J. Roberts first visited the site of Coal Mountain on horseback. Coal was in great demand by railways and other industrial users, so the Corbin Coal and Coke Co., after acquiring 6,000 hectares of land in the area, began to develop a mine. Mr. Roberts was responsible for the construction of the 22-kilometre rail spur, the Eastern British Columbia Railway, which joined the mine to the CPR main line at the McGillivray Loop. Rail access to the mine and its developing community, Corbin, B.C., was completed in September 1908, the same year that the first underground mine began production. The Corbin Coal and Coke Co. operated six mines on Coal Mountain (Fig. 3) and production from 1908 to 1930 inclusive totalled 2,120,800 tonnes. The organization of the'Explosives Division is indicated by the accompanying chart (fig. 1). As this has been discussed in a previous report3/, it will not be considered further in this report. The activities of the various units are outlined below. I. INFLAMMABILITY OF GASES AND VAPORS4/ Determination of the Explosion Hazards of Combustible Gases and Vapors Found in Mines and Industries The Explosives Division maintains, at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station, a laboratory specially equipped for the determination of the explosion hazards of combustible gases and vapors. Of particular importance, is the determination of the chemical composition within which explosions may occur and beyond which there is no danger of explosion, combustion or inflammation. These limits, known as the limits of inflammability, as determined by this and other laboratories, have been compiled in Bulletin 279 of this Bureau. The last revised edition (1931) of this bulletin has been exhausted. Since it was published, the Pittsburgh laboratory has determined the limits of about 40 combustibles and has ascertained more precisely and accurately many previously published limits.

The subject of mud sounds so simple, uninteresting and unimportant that it has failed to receive the attention that it deserves, at least as applied to the drilling of oil wells. As a matter of fact, it is one of the most complicated, technical, important and interesting subjects in connection with rotary drilling. In 1923, R. E. Colloml said "It should be possible to establish certain physical standards for mud fluid," but while considerable work has probably been done on the subject before and since that time, and numerous articles have been written, the progress of general knowledge of the subject and the application of better practices have not kept pace with other developments in rotary drilling, and physical standards cannot be considered as established. Mud is apt to be thought of as an accessible and cheap material, but its cost is likely to be an important factor in the total cost of drilling a well. Some wells "make" most of their own mud out of the formations drilled, but in most cases a great deal of mud-making material has to be supplied from more or less distant sources. Expenditures for mud materials by one California company totaled practically one-quarter million dollars during 1929 and averaged about $13 per rig per drilling day, or about $2000 per well. Under unfavorable conditions, mud cost may reach many times this figure. Parker2 says that in the Hobbs, N. M., field "as much as $75,000 has been spent on one well alone for mud and mud-weighting compounds."' Presumably this is an exceptional case. Unit cost of mud fluid will range from 10 c. per barrel, where suitable material is close at hand, to $1 where crude material is available at moderate price but must be hauled long distances, and on up to as much as $11 per barrel where high gas pressure requires the use of special processed weighting material. The cost of mud pales into insignificance, however, when the results of using improper mud are considered. Blow-outs and lost circulation are obviously the result of inadequate mud. Safe, efficient production is a common objective for all large open pit mines. Despite comprehensive policies, procedures and regulations aimed at protecting workers, several people die each year in mining equipment-related collisions. The limited sightlines of heavy equipment operators coupled with difficult operating conditions are major contributing factors to the majority of mining equipment collisions. Off road haul trucks are the most common type of machinery involved in surface accidents. These vehicles represent the primary target for improving safety performance by mine operators. Although several commercial products have been introduced to address these issues, none have achieved significant market acceptance. The current collision avoidance solutions lack integration with onboard fleet management and equipment health systems. To achieve acceptance in industry, any collision avoidance system must offer high reliability, minimal false alarms, and value for money. With these criteria in mind, this paper will examine the pros and cons of the various technological approaches to collision avoidance in an open pit mining environment. The unique global positioning systems (GPS) and camera-based proximity detection solution on offer from Modular Mining Systems will be described. This solution uses intelligent filters to minimise false alarms. Tight integration with fleet management provides context information to enhance warnings and enable back-office near-miss analysis. Available today, this combination creates a practical solution to improve the situational awareness of heavy equipment operators, at a compelling price point. Future directions for maximising heavy equipment operator situational awareness will also be examined.

This Bureau of Mines report analyzes data on the physical properties of quartzite rock from the Crescent mine, Coeur d?Alene mining district, Kellogg, Idaho, to demonstrate the use of multivariate techniques. After regression, factor, component, cluster, and discriminant analyses are discussed, these techniques are applied to the Crescent mine data. Three appendixes contain some of the required mathematical and statistical detail plus heuristic examples of three multivariate techniques --component, cluster, and discriminant analysis.

In most States of Australia it is a legislative requirement for underground mines to have a separate means of egress from the normal means of ingress to permit the safe evacuation of workers to the surface in event of an emergency. Such egress may be in the form of a ladderway equipped shaft/underlie or trafficable incline/decline. Additionally, there is a general requirement to have one or more airways, separate to the main shaft or other principal entrance of an underground mine, extending to the lowest level to permit ventilation to all parts of the mine. Fulfilling these requirement is difficult in the development phase of a mine when access underground is achievable by only a shaft or decline in the process by being sunk. What is frequently practiced in Australia is for production to then commence, sometimes in association with continuing development, in the same configuration without the establishment of this separate method of egress to the surface nor additional airway/s with reliance on refuge chambers to cater for back up in any emergency. Not only, could this jeopardise the health and safety of workers in case of an underground emergency it could be construed as a statutory breach of legislation. While recognising that refuge chambers are often used throughout underground operations nowadays their equipping and the criteria for their location needs to be bought into focus. This presentation discusses how such legislative requirement can be met alongside the use and appropriateness of refuge chambers.

The necessity for compromise between educational ideals and the practical limitations of time, money, and mental capacities of both student and teacher is evident in the preparation of an end product that we may regard with a reasonable degree of conviction as a professional engineer. Pilot Plant confirmatory testing of the treatment route developed in the Metallurgical Laboratory is an essential factor in the development of complex ore bodies. Objectives should be well defined to permit the efficient planning and cost effective operation of the pilot plant project. The primary objective for the pilot plant should be to confirm the viability of the developed flowsheet on a continuous basis, examining only major variables such as ore types, quantum changes in grind, comparison between bulk and sequential flotation circuits, use of flotation columns, evaluation of autogenous grinding and production of samples of concentrates for market evaluation. Secondary objectives may include the collection of engineering design data and the production of a comprehensive report to Bankable Document standards to provide technical support for capital financing. The complexity of the ore body and the scale of the final operating project together with the pilot plant objectives will determine the extent of the pilot plant operations. The level of expenditure associated with a pilot plant can vary, in total cost and as a percentage of the total development capital investment required to take the prospect from exploration to a producing mine. Factors contributing to expenditure are discussed. Associated with cost considerations is the level of confidence mining company investors can have that their capital investment will return dividends.

Over the last decade the adoption of autonomous technology has proven its potential to fundamentally alter the mining industry, offering significant improvements in safety and productivity. Automation levels are now increasing exponentially across all parts of the supply chain from drilling, haulage, processing, rail and shipping to the maintenance of the above. However, the management of human error risk is also becoming increasingly complex as the disconnect between the people who operate and interact with mining equipment and those that design the autonomous systems grows in terms of skill and expertise. Furthermore, as comfort levels with automation increases amongst operators, complacency is increasing as the initial functional safety benefits have been realised. This paper introduces an innovative concept that unites two distinct fields, functional safety and behavioural economics, to address the complex issue of human error risk in autonomous mining operations. Functional safety, a well-established field in engineering involves identifying potential hazards, assessing risks and designing systems in a way that minimises the chances of accidents and limits their consequences. Meanwhile, behavioural economics takes a data centric approach to analysing the psychological aspects of human decision-making, acknowledging and seeking to understand the errors that can originate from cognitive biases and heuristics. This paper seeks to bridge these domains by emphasising that human error in autonomous mining is not solely a technical issue but is deeply influenced by human behaviour and decision-making processes. By incorporating insights from behavioural economics, we can better predict, prevent and manage human errors in the mining sector. By applying principles from both disciplines to a recent incident example we will explore how cognitive biases can impact peoples’ interactions with autonomous mining equipment. This interdisciplinary approach will not only enhance the design and implementation of functional safety measures in mining but also lead to the development of people centric solutions that consider the inherent fallibility of people. We will explore how human centred design can help bridge the gap between these two domains and apply systems thinking for a universal approach. Through an indepth case study analysis and empirical data, our research aims to provide actionable insights and practical recommendations for mining industry professionals, regulators and stakeholders involved in the safe integration of autonomous systems.

In September 1985 we published a questionnaire asking about the content of MINING ENGINEERING and about your interests. By Dec. 10, our cutoff date, we had 430 responses, representing about 1.5% of the 28,238 people who received the September issue of ME. In the data that follow the tabulation and percentages are based on the number of individuals who responded to the particular question. About ME Through responses to the questionnaire, we were hoping to learn more about you, your interests, and how the magazine could better serve you. Those of you who responded told us something positive - you look at or read the magazine. Of the 430 respondents, 428 or 99.5% indicated that they had read or looked through the July and/or August issues. Those of you who refer to the magazine once are 207 or 48.5%. Those of you who refer to the magazine two or three times are 193 or 45.2%. Those of you who refer to the magazine four or more times are 27 or 6.3%. How much time do you spend reading the magazine? Of those responding to this question: 64 spent up to 1/2 hr 15.0% 224 spent up to 1 hr 52.6% 115 spent up to 1-2 hr 27.0% 23 spent more than 2 hr 5.4% In an informal survey among our staff, we determined that most people spend 1/2 to 1 hr reading magazines to which they subscribe at home. IN preparing this paper on Canadian mine taxation, there has been no attempt to detail the requirements of the various taxing bodies; but rather to consider the matter from the standpoint of its underlying principles and give a general idea of the methods adopted. I have added an Appendix setting forth the principal features of the various Acts, which should be used for general reference only, since new rulings alter minor details from time to time. In current legislation, many important points are left to the discretion of the Ministers and their deputies. We are, indeed, fortunate in having in Canada an able and conscientious body of permanent officials, who bring a sense of justice and courtesy to their work which is most commendable, and which has done much to simplify the working out of general problems. The production of metals may rightly be deemed a form of manufacture, but differs from the average manufacturing business in three important respects: (1) In its early stages, it is wholly speculative, since it is impossible to make any definite appraisal of value or possibilities. (2) The principal asset of any mine, i.e., the ore in the ground, is a wasting asset, and is irreplaceable. (3) Any additional burden by way of taxation cannot be passed on to the public but must be borne entirely by the producer. Having regard to the first of these differences, it is apparent that, since the risk of loss is great, the reward in case of success must be correspondingly great. This fact seems to be constantly overlooked by those who regard the all too few outstanding successes in Canadian mining history as fit prey for predatory legislation. As an illustration of the speculative nature of early mining development, let us consider the Province of Ontario-and I take this illustration simply because I am more familiar with conditions there, and not because I believe it differs greatly from any other province. From 1907 to 1933, 165,243 claims were staked and recorded, from which 43 mines were developed which paid one or more dividends. There was, of course, some duplication through re-staking; also, on some claims very little work was done, and most mines have more than one claim. But, since staking and recording cost real money and effort, each of these claims must have been considered to have had merit.

In the recent past a number of smelting plants were commissioned in India to supply the rising demand by domestic steelworks for manganese-based ferroalloys, and they enjoyed cheap electric power and readily available high-grade manganese ore. Presently, the cost of electric power is much higher than in some neighbouring countries, there continues to be poor transport infrastructure and the prices of high-grade manganese ore have increased. Additionally, the Indian Government has opened its economy to the outside world, resulting in the import duties on ferroalloys being drastically reduced. In this paper the current situation in India will be detailed, the electric arc furnace and blast furnace smelting methods for ferroalloys compared and proposals for the construction of a new ferromanganese blast furnace in India outlined. The future of ferroalloy smelters in India will be assessed and actions which could be taken to improve their position discussed.

Equilibrium calculational software programs can be effectively utilized to illustrate the importance of activity or concentration, solubility, temperature, solution pH, solution potential, and ligand complexation to students studying hydrometallurgy. The calculational program STABCAL will be demonstrated. illustrative examples for the creation of diagrams such as EH-pH, activity or concentration-pH and activity or concentration-EH will be presented to demonstrate the fundamentals of real hydrometallurgical systems. Speciation, titration and mixing will be used to simulate or predict operational processes. Applications will include treatment of Acid Mine Drainage (Berkeley Pitlake water and sediments), mass balance potential/pH diagrams, leaching and selective separation of metals from electroplating sludge, metal adsorption at femhydrite surfaces, and flowsheet development for treating mercury sulfide K106 sludge.

Since millisecond-delay detonators were first introduced, at least two variables, among others, have been more closely considered when timing a mining blast: the accuracy and the precision of the initiation system. Currently, most mine blast design software has the capability to use the precision/accuracy of the firing system and display the overlap timing window between charges in any given time interval (8 ms, 3 ms, etc.). Despite these technological advances, there are still situations which result in the overlapping of charge timings. The consequences of overlapping charges involve flyrock events, fragmentation and diggability problems, and other inconvenient situations affecting the operation of the mine.

Thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of nickel and cobalt leaching from metals. minerals and ores in various media have been reviewed and discussed in this paper. A kinetic model developed to delineate the leaching mechanisms for these metals has been discussed in view of experimental observations. The current review also includes the dissolution behavior of nickel and cobalt from various minerals such as oxides, sulrides. ocean floor manganese nodules, and laterites. A particular emphasis has been extended to similarities and differences of the dissolution behavior of these two metals in various media. The leaching of nickel as well as cobalt metal in acidic solutions and arnmoniacal solutions exhibits in most part mass transfer controlling. although at some pH's, chemical controlling or mixed controlling mechanisms seem to prevail. The leaching of nickel and cobalt from oxides in acids and ammoniacal solutions. on the other hand, can be described best by chemical controlling mechanisms.

In order to optimize carbon injection into oxidizing slags, in terms of carbon and iron yield, we must have a detailed understanding of the kinetics of the reactions involved. The current study measures the rate of carbon oxidation during injection at steelmaking temperature by means of injections of coal into EAF slags. The compositions of analysed outgoing gas were used to calculate gas flow rate and hence the gasification rate of carbon. A fundamental equation to predict residual carbon in slags was developed. The predictions using this model at moderate injection rates are in good agreement with experimental data. The reaction rate of EAF slag with carbon is under mixed control by the slag gas and the gas carbon reactions. The relative importance of each step depends mainly on the v-ratio of slags. A relative reactivity parameter ? has been defined and it is found to be important to carbon-slag reaction kinetics and slag foaming. Key words: carbon-slag reaction, kinetics, slag foaming.
