Methods that involve the use of signature blast holes in order to identify the particular frequency characteristics of a geographical area are widely available. Information acquired can be used to determine optimum blast hole timings to produce the desired constructive and destructive inference. However, these types of analyses can be both complicated and expensive. This study will investigate the use and practicality of signature hole and/or shift and sum analysis software and their application to small diameter construction utility blasting operations in Pennsylvania and faster moving projects in general. A determination will then be made as to whether this technology can be utilized by today’s blaster, from both a functional and a cost effective basis. Single hole blasts will be detonated on various smaller construction projects and will be monitored with an array of seismographs. The collected data will be analyzed in order to determine the optimum timing between holes to produce the preferred frequency content while keeping in mind the explosives user’s current inventory of blasting supplies.

This Bureau of Mines investigation was initiated to study and establish some of the chemical and physical characteristics of the condensed Mno-Si02 system. To prevent oxidation of the manganous ion, I atmosphere of purified helium was used in the furnaces. Solidus-liquidus curves and invariant points were established from melting-point determinations and were supplemented from data obtained by the static-quenching method. Experimental findings and data are for the intermediate compounds of tephroite and rhodonite with their respective eutectics represented at 25.5 and 37.2 weight-percent silica. Tephroite melts congruently at 1,347° C., and rhodonite melts incongruently at 1,286° 8.. A metastable transformation was determined to exist at the 1,347° C. isotherm, the congruent melting point of tephroite. A composite X-ray-diffraction pattern was formulated for synthetic rhodonite. This investigation contributes fundamental data leading toward a better understanding of the more complex slag systems.

Oxide ores can consume enormous amounts of expensive sulfuric acid. The problem is amplified with increasing heap heights. One solution is to provide a thin liner and drainage system between each lift of ore, thereby intercepting the pregnant leach leach solution (PLS) after it exits the active lift. However, these liner systems require special attention to hydraulics, slope stability and geomembrane design criteria. Inadequate attention to the first two can result in reduced recoveries, increased acid consumption andsystem failures. The geomembrane selection criteria are different from the base liner, and optimizing its selection can have significant effects on the operation’s bottom line.

Ausmelt Technology has a unique capability of removing the impurities, phosphorus and sulphur, from the feed materials to the process. Sulphur is removed to the gas phase almost completely because of the interactions of ore and coal in the reaction region at the top surface of the slag bath. Phosphorus is removed to the slag phase, with both basic and higher, controlled iron oxide levels in slag being achieved in the process. The significance of these features of the process relate to the production of pig iron with very low levels of these impurities for the further processing to steel, and to the treatment of high phosphorus and high sulphur raw materials. The marketability of pig iron and the raw materials are discussed in relation to this feature of Auslron.

IN 1943 the petroleum industry completed a series of practical adjustments to the acute problems which dominated the scene a year earlier. The crisis in petroleum transportation from the Gulf Coast to the East Coast was met by the completion of overland pipe lines supplementing emergency haulage by tank car so pressure on consumers along the Atlantic Seaboard was appreciably relieved. Later in the year when the western Atlantic was largely cleared of submarines, the sharp reduction in the hazards of marine transportation permitted the resumption of coastwise traffic and imports from South America. Nationwide restrictions in the use of gasoline and fuel oils became necessary as military demands for all petroleum products mounted to high levels.

Cerâmicas porosas foram produzidas com nanopartículas de ferrita de manganês através da técnica de freeze casting, sendo possível obter poros direcionados. Foram produzidas duas amostras dessas cerâmicas tendo como ligante-dispersante o PEG-4000 e PEG-8000, ambos em 8%p. Por MEV foi possível observar as estruturas porosas das cerâmicas. O método de Arquimedes foi utilizado para obter as medidas de porosidade e densidade aparentes e de densificação. A ferrita pura e as amostras sinterizadas foram caracterizadas por DRX e foi identificada apenas a presença da fase ferrita, para as amostras antes da sinterização e transformação de fase da ferrita para óxidos de Mn e Fe após tratamento térmico. Tais resultados possibilitam indicar a aplicação dessas cerâmicas como elementos filtrantes.

Methods of utilizing flocculants as settling and filter aids for mineral processing slurries are reviewed. Broad chemical classifications and techniques for proper dilution, multiple addition, and combination treatments are discussed. A variety of custom built and commercially available systems for make up and delivery of flocculants to the application points are in use through- out the mining industry. Those concepts which, in the author's opinion, are particularly important to the successful make up and use of flocculants are presented in relationship to the available make up and feed systems. Actual industrial applications are included in the presentation.

Reducibility tests were run by the Bureau of Mines on an open hearth lump ore and four groups of pellets whose smelting characteristics had been deter-mined previously in the Bureau's experimental blast furnace. When reduction data from various tests were plotted on specially prepared paper l-(l-percent reduction/100)1/3 against time, the plots were linear. The iron-wustite inter-face therefore advances at a constant rate. The rate of the interface advance in mm/min was used as a reducibility index. The reducibility index measured at 900° C, using 0.45 cu ft hydrogen per minute varied inversely with the surface area of the sample. Even with carefully controlled surface areas, how-ever, duplicate reducibility indices varied considerably. When enough tests were run to give a stable mean, the mean reducibility index did correlate with blast furnace production for the four pellet groups. Results indicated that if the interface speed itself were to be used for correlation with blast furnace production, a sample size of about 180 grams of minus 0.742-plus 0.525-inch particles should be used with a test temperature of 900° C and a flow of 0.45 cu ft hydrogen per minute.

Sampling equipment manufacturers endeavour to ensure that the mechanical equipment installed in sampling systems are designed and manufactured to adhere to the requirements of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) or other standards relevant to the application. The mechanical parameters necessary to achieve these standards can be well controlled and requirements such as constant speed can be met through good mechanical design and engineering. However, when the equipment is installed and put into operation, the ISO compliance of the system is out of the hands of the equipment manufacturer and handed to the operator, who may be a generalist control system integrator.Making a sampling system perform according to standards, and being able to monitor and report on compliance require that the sampling system knowledge and the control integration is combined and applied in an integrated approach. Using a dedicated library of control routines developed for sampling can change a system from having compliant equipment to being a compliant system. RESEARCH is defined, scientifically, as a "sys- tematic investigation of some phenomenon, and also a search for hidden treasures." Chemists tell us that the hidden treasures of petroleum are far richer than the .products which have been best known to us. However, these secrets will be discovered only through intensive and systematic, as well as scientific, industrial research. Indeed, the scope of the subject is so great that such an intensive research program should be assumed by a centralized organization supported by the petroleum industry as a whole. Such organization would assume the responsibilities for investigation of new products and development of markets for such products. Gasoline, the chief product of the petroleum industry, has become a cheap commodity. The continual un-controlled overproduction of crude petroleum, the in-tensive competitive condition in the marketing of petro-leum products and the increase of refining efficiency and installing of cracking facilities, have all combined to lower the market value of gasoline. The lower cost of gasoline has all been passed on to the purchaser in the form of lower prices so that today the most important product can scarcely be manufactured at a profit. In other fields, manufacturing industries have diversified their products when faced by a similar situation. Thus, they have been able to widen their marketing outlook. Why cannot the petroleum industry employ the same tactics ? Right now we are hearing much discussion concerning the development of a wider market for existing petro-leum products and new products for existing or prospec-tive markets. For instance, we can cite recent develop-ments for use of propane, butane, and ethylene. Butane has been found to be an efficient and inexpensive re-frigerant, especially adapted to home refrigerating sys-tems. Propane and butane fractions of natural gasoline may be shipped under pressure and may be used as a substitute for acetylene in cutting torches in connection with oxygen. There is a possibility of substituting butane for gas oil in the carbureting of coal gas, as we know that butane contains practically the gas enrich-ment as the same volume of gas oil and should prove to be a superior product for this function. Ethylene, a hydrocarbon present in cracked gases, is finding an outlet for the artificial ripening of green fruits. The following table . shows the more general use of petro-leum products as now established.

In formulating an explosive for any specific set of conditions, various factors must be taken into consideration. Is it to be subjected to water or moisture? .If so, it must be designed to have an inherent ability to resist water. Is it to be used in confined spaces underground, where ventilation is limited? If it is, it must possess qualities enabling it to form, upon explosion, the minimum quantity of noxious gases, such as carbon monoxide or oxides of nitrogen. Is it for use where low temperatures may possibly prevail? If so, it must be capable of resisting such temperatures without freezing. Is it for use where dust or inflammable gases may be present? If it is, then it must be so formulated as to produce, upon detonation, a flame of the lowest possible temperature and the shortest possible duration, in order to lessen the chance of ignition of such gas or dust. This is actually the essential property of a permitted explosive, and it is undoubtedly the most important characteristic of an explosive which is to be used in gassy or closed-light mines. This being the quality that distinguishes permitted explosives from other types, it is interesting to investigate the ways and means by which the low-flame-temperature characteristic is obtained . Generally speaking, such explosives are so designed as to contain comparatively small quantities of nitroglycerin and relatively large quantities of the strength-producing salt, ammonium nitrate. This ingredient does not develop as high a temperature upon explosion as does nitroglycerin, so its presence, in large measure, in place of nitroglycerin results in an explosive which has an inherent low-flame-temperature characteristic, as opposed to one which is .made up largely of nitroglycerin, which would ordinarily be in the high-flame-temperature class. Additions are also made of flame-quenching salts such as sodium chloride, ammonium chloride, and up to a certain limiting percentage of sodium nitrate. These salts, with the exception of the last, do not ordinarily take an active part in the explosive reaction, being present primarily to absorb heat liberated by the reacting ingredients.

INTRODUCTION Recent advances in high-pressure water jet technology can be effectively employed in mining and tunneling. The new equipment is based on available industrial hardware such as pumps, nozzles, and rotary swivels and seals, and is compatible with present mining and tunneling techniques. Principal advantages of water-jet assisted cutting relative to standard cutting are higher production rates, lower dust levels, and reduced fines. When used on rock and coal miners, water jets mean that relatively smaller and cheaper machines can be purchased. If properly applied, the combined effect is lower cost and significantly improved health and safety. While commercial use of high-pressure water blast cutting and extraction of rock (and concrete) already has a firm foothold in Europe, application of this new technique is just beginning in America. This paper begins with current American applications of high-pressure water jets for drills, for slotting and channeling machines, and then discusses the emerging technology for initiating rock failure in conjunction with drag bits on coal plows, continuous miners and boom-type miners (roadheaders). The focus of this paper is use of high-pressure water jets for cutting rock. High-pressure water jet cutting utilizes water above 70 MPa and currently reaches to 300 MPa and above. Some informatfon is included on low pressure "wethead" coal shearers and boom miners with water pressure to about 15 MPa.

Accordingly, Dr. Pier and a large number of other men of the I.G. Farbenindustrie, A.G. plant at Ludwigshafen/ Oppau were further interrogated in July-1945. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating ways of enhancing the high-temperature softening-melting (HTSM) properties of domestic taconite pellets. These properties, which are important for determining the performance of pellets in blast furnaces, include pellet bed contraction, pressure drop, S-value (area under the pressure-temperature curve), and softening and metal-slag drainout temperatures. Experiments showed that HTSM properties were related to the physiochemical properties (fired strengths and reducibilities) of pellets containing different levels of limestone and dolomite flux. Flux additions resulted in slightly lower green and fired pellet strengths, but improved metallurgical properties, such as reducibility. The influence of reduction conditions on HTSM properties was evaluated by varying the pellet metallization starting temperature and the carbon monoxide content of the CO-N2 gas mixture. HTSM property change was more sensitive to flux addition levels when metallization was initiated at 1,100° C with 20 pct CO in the gas stream. The S-value and the metal-slag drainout temperature were found to be the best criteria for characterizing HTSM properties. The optimum flux addition level was about 8 pct (4 pct dolomite, 4 pct limestone) or a basicity of about 1. At higher flux levels, a higher metal-slag drainout temperature was obtained.

Field-based research was conducted to investigate the performance of field portable X-ray fluorescence (FPXRF) in the analysis of reverse circulation (RC) drill chips in iron ore exploration. For years, FPXRF has been considered unsuitable for iron ore exploration due to the limitations of the elements it is capable of analysing for, in particular its inability to measure light elements (Mg, Al, Si, P, S). With the advent of the use of silicon drift detectors (SDD) in FPXRF, light elements are now measurable elements. However, doubt over the appropriate use of this new technology still exists due to the absence of reliable comparative field data. These doubts concerned the ability of the FPXRF data to correlate strongly with the laboratory assay of the same samples. It was believed that inconsistent grain size and other variables not being controlled would contribute greatly to this perceived unreliability.We tested RC chip samples on-site in the Pilbara, with the portable Thermo Scientific Niton XL3t X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyser for a range of elements including Fe, Mn, Al, Si and S and then compared the results with laboratory assay data. A strong correlation indicates that the FPXRF results are reliable. Furthermore, to show the effect of simple sample preparation, we also analysed pulps of the same samples in the same way.The correlations were good for all of the elements of interest for the RC chip samples (R2 values between 0.82 and 0.9), and excellent for the pulps (R2 values between 0.89 and 1). The results also showed a direct correlation between sample preparation and improved quality of results with the FPXRF. This indicates that FPXRF can produce data from unprepared RC chips for Al and Si that, when compared with laboratory assays, is reliable for a field application in drilling and grade control. The economy of Belize continued to show a very slight but still positive growth during 1986. The gross domestic product (GDP) was estimated to have been about $164 million,2 almost the same as those of 1984 and 1985. Foreign investors looked favorably on Belize because it had remained isolated from the sometimes turbulent political and social strife elsewhere in Central America. Reportedly, in late 1986, Guatemala had decided not to pursue its claim to Belizean territory and to give full recognition to that country. Discussions were to be held regarding any matters of mutual concern. New investment possibilities were oriented toward agriculture or manufacturing endeavors. Except for some interest in petroleum exploration, the minerals sector remained limited to the quarrying of construction-related materials.

The widely accepted concept of mineral resources are that they are finite - mining therefore being intrinsically unsustainable. Yet the modern global mining industry continues to grow production at strong rates - how can this be? In reality, mining is a complex industry, starting with exploration, development, operations and then rehabilitation and closure. A recent major study of Australia has shown that for most mineral commodities, exploration continues to find new deposits, or expand resources at existing mines. In parallel, however, there are a number of key 'mega-trends' which are growing in their importance - declining ore grades (or quality), increasing tailings and waste rock volumes, the need for deeper mining, more refractory ore types, increasing energy inputs and higher unit energy costs, increasing pollution issues and, of course, not to forget greenhouse gas emissions issues. This paper will present a detailed case study of the ultimate sustainability of the Australian mining industry - showing long term historical data sets on ore grades, waste volumes and economic resources and placing these trends in light of major twenty-first century issues such as energy supplies (especially Peak Oil), climate change and existing and emerging land use conflicts (eg agriculture versus mining). Australia is a critical case study in the sustainability of mining, as it is a major global exporter of numerous commodities, and this is expected to continue to underpin the ongoing industrialisation of countries such as China and India. The ultimate question begs - can Australia actually meet this fundamental challenge, or will our resources run out, or will we be constrained by environmental issues such as climate change, land use or perhaps water? Rather than a mere optimist's or pessimist's view, this paper will present a range of hard data which underpins the debate about the sustainability of mining this century: ultimately, we cannot assume that the patterns of past mining will continue to work in the future. The sustainability of mining continues to hang in a precarious balance.

The Bureau of Mines explored the Three Kids deposit in 1941 as part of a strategic minerals program. Earlier mining and exploration had established the presence of a substantial tonnage of medium-grade wad ore, and drilling and sampling by the Bureau of Mines, in collaboration with the Federal Geological Survey, indicated an additional tonnage such that development and exploitation became more clearly feasible. Private interests, with Government support, undertook to produce metallurgical-grade manganese. The present paper describes the Bureau of Mines exploration and subsequent development. Manganese in the Three Kids area is found in one of the lower members of the Muddy Creek formation in a bed of fine sandstone and silt, which outcrops around the north edge of the River Mountains and generally dips 20° to 40° away from the hills. There is considerable variation in the thickness and grade of the ore. The ore is light weight, having a density of 1.2 to 2.

"This report describes the trend of developments in electric brass-furnace practice in the last two years, and supplements Bureau of Mines Bulletin 202, ""Electric Brass-Furnace Practice"", which was published in 1922. In that bulletin it -as pointed out that some of the lines on which electric brass-furnace progress would take place were clear, but others were less so.Developments in foreign countries.Foreign brass-melters have not yet adopted electric melting to an extent comparable to its use in the United States. It is doubtful Whether all foreign countries combined use 100 electric brass furnaces; of these about 35 are of American make (Ajax, Detroit, Baily) and are operating in Canada, Mexico, England, France, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Norway, Germany, Argentina and Czecho-Slovakia.`The Rennerfelt furnace finds some use in Sweden (1)c, notwithstanding its high metal loss on alloys high in zinc, Two German firms are reported(2) to be using the Rochling-Rodenhauser induction furnace on bronze, the average energy consumption being given as 400 kw.-h. per ton. No comment is made on any trouble from the ""pinch effect"", A firm in Switzerland is reported (3) to use three 600-lb., direct-arc furnaces of its own design to melt babbitt, antimonial lead, coinage silver, nickel, copper, and brass. The metal loss on yellow-brass turnings is high. Use Of a direct-arc furnace in England, with precautions aimed to prevent surface overheating, vas abandoned (4) in favor of an Ajax furnace."

Let’s start off with your assessment of the mining industry. Today, the status of the mining industry is stronger than it has been over the previous few years. While mining continues to be a major part of the world’s economic foundation, the industry is gaining strength due to rebounding metals and minerals prices. And now, with these rising prices and the changes the industry instituted during the years when mining-related commodities were selling at low prices, our stronger, more productive and internationally competitive industry should flourish. Mining remains an essential business and the industry is far ahead of the game when it comes to the trend of globalization as a key to sustained growth. Also, the industry continues to realize increased productivity through technological innovations. And an increasing number of countries are moving towards capitalism, which opens doors for exploration and mining within their borders. After looking at all of these factors, I believe that the mining industry will only continue to gain momentum in the future.
