"The McLaughlin Mine owned by Homestake Mining Company is located 70 miles northeast of San Francisco in California's coastal range. The mine began operations in February of 1985. The mill currently processes 3,000 short-ton per day of sulfide ore that has an average grade of 0.15 ounces of gold per ton, plus another 3,000 tons per day in a newly completed oxide circuit. Annual production from the mine totals over 200,000 ounces.The sulfide ore extraction process involves three basic steps, grinding, oxidation of sulfide minerals in an autoclave, and cyanide leaching for recovery of gold in a carbon-in-pulp circuit. This process, which incorporates a new technology where oxidation of sulfide minerals is conducted prior to cyanide leaching to facilitate gold recovery, was successful from start-up. However, limitation in the grinding mills initially limited sulfide tonnage throughput.This paper discusses modifications made in the grinding circuit, both mechanical and operational, to resolve it deficiency. The SAG mill, in particular, was unable to achieve design tonnage initially and proved to be most troublesome. Complications occurred due to the hardness and variability of ore being processed, short component life, and a lifter /liner arrangement that had to be tailored to the particular circumstances at McLaughlin. IntroductionHomestake Mining Company's McLaughlin Mill, located in northern California, was designed to process a refractory gold ore at a rate of 3,000 tpd to render the ore amenable to cyanidation. Seven years transpired between discovery of the near-surface ore body in 1978 and the February, 1985 plant start-up. Development of the McLaughlin mill and open pit gold mine hinged on the use of autoclave technology to achieve design recoveries."

Cyanide is a fast-acting, highly toxic substance but, at the same time, is deemed essential for sustaining life as well as our standard of living. In this manuscript, the facts about cyanide are presented beginning with a brief history and definition and ending with a discussion on cyanide alternatives. Other topics include speciation, physical characteristics, toxicity, manufacturing, cyanogenics, cyanide cycle, separation, destruction, and markets including those outside the mining industry. Emphasis, of course, is placed on gold production by leaching and how it is influenced by ore type, mineral characteristics and economics as well as its advantages and disadvantages.

In January, 1922, a conference relative to trailing cables for use with permissible mining machines was held at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. At this conference it was recommended that the bureau take steps to investigate the rubber-sheathed type of cables and to bring about the establishment of a list of approved cables. Effective until such time as a complete investigation could be made, the bureau asked the several manufacturers holding approvals for mining machines to recommend cables for use with their machines. In general the cables recommended were tentatively approved. Due to the lack of available personnel, no actual tests of cables were made until mid-1927. Meanwhile a field investigation of trailing cables was made at 20 mines of three coal companies in western Pennsylvania, and samples of cables were obtained from the manufacturers for laboratory tests. Twenty-five samples of the concentric-type cable, representing the product of five manufacturers, were obtained for the tests. These cables were of four sizes, as follows: 3 cables of No. 2 B & S gage, 17 cables of No. 3 B & S gage, 3 cables of No. 4 B & S gage, and 2 cables of No. 6 B & S gage.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report summarizes Federal mandatory belt conveyor automatic fire suppression system installation requirements and inspection procedures, identifies system failure modes observed during in-mine investigations, and suggests system design and maintenance upgrades which, if implemented, would result in an improvement in overall system reliability. This report is a compilation of recommendations based on discussions with Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) inspectors, review of manufacturer's literature, discussions with mine personnel, and research investigations of automatic fire suppression system performance in the laboratory and in mines. The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) requirements for installation, inspection, and maintenance of fire suppression systems should be regarded as minimum standards.

The recent paper by Dr. Edwards upon the copper deposits of Australia furnishes a perspective upon that portion of the Commonwealth's mineral deposits which is the more welcome because it has been long overdue. The paper yields in compressed form and in handy arrangement for reference the more relevant data to end of 1938 for all of Australia's important copper deposits 'past"and. present, and for many of the lesser ones. The information supplied 'obviously' has 15een collected' painstakingly and compiled with discrimination.Such published surveys of a national character have been far too few.The Mineral Resources Survey branch of the Department of Supply and Shipping at Canberra has been engaged for several years upon comprehensive compilations of data concerning each of the more important minerals used in industry. Presumably the results will be published after the war. The group will constitute an impressive and valuable series.As yet the work has not been completed, and, for security reasons, much of that which has been finalized is not publicly available. This makes the paper by Dr. Edwards the more timely.In the compilation of data by those not acquainted at first hand with many of the districts involved it is inevitable that, from reading of the literature alone, certain misconceptions will arise relationships become confused; and some of the more recently acquired information unavoidably fail to be taken into account. One need only compare his own impressions of a district, gained from reading the published literature prior to inspection, with the impressions later arrived at following a visit, to realize the difficulties in appraising the various features,in their proper relationships.On the whole, Dr. Edwards has, kept such misinterpretations at a minimum, which is a tribute to the care he must have exercised in analysing the vast fund of data perused. A few errors of statement, mainly concerning, Queensland deposits, have been noted. Availability of accurate geological information about the rock mass surrounding a tunnel or mine working is the key to enhance and optimize the required ground support measures. Various approaches have been used to obtain data on ground conditions, including the possibility of characterizing the ground while drilling for roof bolts, by the Measurement While Drilling (MWD) system, via optical, sonic and acoustic televiewers, and using various types of gamma probes. While there are many different systems for characterizing the ground in longer, larger-diameter holes drilled downward, the options for using probes and logging systems in short, small-diameter holes drilled in horizontal or an upward direction are very limited. This paper will present the results of recent field tests using optical televiewer (OPTV) to analyze the joints and voids in boreholes drilled in different directions. The studies show that OPTV is a promising tool; however, getting a good quality image from the upward drill holes still need to be studied. Meanwhile, estimated in-situ strength of the intact rock is needed to complement the jointing pattern for rock mass classification. For this purpose, preliminary steps for the development of a borehole scratcher to estimate rock strength will be discussed in this paper.

Atualmente, tecidos de fibras sintéticas como a aramida (Kevlar®) e o polietileno (Dyneema®) têm sido os preferidos para proteção balística contra munições leves, e para integrar sistemas de proteção contra calibres superiores, como o 7,62 mm. Porém, por apelos econômicos, ambientais e da disponibilidade limitada destes produtos, materiais alternativos têm sido testados. Neste cenário, destacam-se os compósitos reforçados com fibras naturais, que têm demonstrado bom desempenho balístico. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar o desempenho individual de compósitos reforçados com fibras naturais de curauá, quando submetidos ao impacto balístico com munição 7,62 mm. Foram executados ensaios balísticos, medindo-se a energia do projétil absorvida pelos materais, e os resultados tratados estatisticamente por Anova e teste de Tukey. Mostrou-se que estes compósitos têm potencial para substituir as fibras sintéticas em sistemas de blindagem para proteção pessoal, com a vantagem de serem materiais leves, de baixo custo, nacionais, de ampla disponibilidade e ambientalmente corretos.

A series of experiments were carried out in an effort to develop a universally applicable mathematical model of the hydrocyclone classifier. The design and operating variables studied were: cyclone diameter and height, the inlet, vortex finder and apex diameters, the feed pressure and the solids content of the feed slurry. The model consists of four basic equations which express the cut size ( dso), volumetric split between overflow and underflow, volumetric throughput, and sharpness of separation in terms of the operating and design variables. Although empirical, the model is nevertheless in general agreement with fundamentally derived models. The model clearly 1•eveals the effect of the major variables on the operation of a hydrocyclone. Because of its broad data base and the inclusion of all the major variables, the model may be used without experimental data to predict the operation of cyclones over a wide range of different operating conditions. With operating data, the equations may be modified to serve as an operational model.

Tremendous improvements in mining technology have been witnessed during the past 100 years. For example, before 1860 all blastholes were drilled manually and blasting was done with low-energy black-powder. During the 1860's both the pneumatic rock drill and high-energy dynamite were introduced, ushering in an era of mining mechanization that has steadily progressed since that time. Today, with the rapid implementation of the latest advances in communication science, mining technology is moving into a new era that goes beyond mechanization as such. Transistors, transducers, scanners, telemetry, and the like, all terms largely derived from the new communication sciences, add up to what is popularly know as automation-the communication of machine with machine. Automation is now playing an important role in selected parts of the mining process, such as hoisting, hydraulic roof supports, and underground surface locomotive haulage and belt conveyor systems. But this year marked the first attempt to auto-mate the total mining process with the commencement of production at the British National Coal Boards Bevercotes mine. If this full-scale experiment proves successful, it could lead towards other fully automated mines in both Britain and other parts of the world. This decade, there-fore, could be considered the one that provided the foundation for the mines of the future.

This paper presents the beneficial effects of non-oxidative leaching of final and intermediate copper sulfide concentrates with sulfuric acid prior to the final cleaning stage of flotation. This unique process, combining leaching and flotation, appears to be advantageous for difficult-to-treat carbonate-bearing Polish copper ores, such as those processed in copper concentrators at KGHM Polish Copper. It was shown that after the chemical decomposition of about 70 % of the total carbonates naturally present in the flotation feed, a considerable enhancement of subsequent flotation results (both grade and recovery). The resulting products of non-oxidative leaching are solid hydrated calcium sulfate (gypsum), soluble magnesium sulfate and gaseous carbon dioxide. The beneficial effect established by the laboratory leaching tests was subsequently confirmed during a pilot plant operation treating final copper concentrate and a problematic intermediate concentrate at the Lubin concentrator.

The major factors limiting the establishing of vegetation on the shale and sandstone wastes at Minto are high exchange acidity and low pH (shale pH 4-5, sandstone pH < 4). In the first revegetation program (1967-74), 3.8 million trees were planted without grading on 4,000 acres (red, jack and scots pine and black locust). White dutch and sweet clover, birds-foot trefoil and red top were established in selected areas, and ponds were stocked with brook trout. In the second phase of reclamation, beginning in 1979, a comprehensive plan will be initiated which will allow for forest production, wildlife development and recreational activities.

PURSUANT to a recommendation made by the Section delegates at their conference at the Annual Meeting of the A.I.M.E. last February, the Directors, at their meeting on March 15, 1944, appointed a committee charged with the duty of investigating the present status of licensing and registration of engineers, and to make a report on the whole subject for the information of the mining fraternity. The committee consisted of E. W. Ellis, chairman, H. D. Keiser, Henry T. Mudd, J. J. Croston, and Simon Strauss. Messrs. Keiser and Strauss were unable to assist in the work of the committee, and Mr. Mudd was forced to resign in July, his place being taken by A. F. Greaves-Walker. Able assistance was given the committee by T. Keith Legare, executive secretary of the National Council of State Boards of Engineering Examiners, and by Ed. ward Larson, executive secretary of the National Society of Professional Engineers. The accompanying somewhat condensed version of the report of Mr. Ellis&apos;s committee, dated Oct. 15, 1944, is confined to facts rather than to recommendations. The "Model Law" to which reference is made was first drafted by repre¬sentatives of six national engineering societies in 1911. It has since been amended many times, the latest version dated June 1943 is recommended to the State Licensing Boards as a pattern for formulating or amending state laws. The entropy values at 298.1° K. for the elements and inorganic compounds, on which sufficient data were available for calculation in 1931, were discussed in a previous publication (96).3 Since that time the specific beats at low&apos; temperatures of many more inorganic substances have been determined, and considerable advances have been made in the realms of spectroscopy applicable to the determination of thermodynamic properties. Moreover, a critical study of the existing vapor-pressure data made by the author (98) furnishes entropy of vaporization results suitable for obtaining approximate values of the entropies of a number of gases from the entropies of the solids or liquids. Consequently, it appears worth while at the present time to supplement the former publication, giving the new values now obtainable and making such revision in the older values as the data warrant. The methods of calculating entropies were discussed in previous publications (96, 98) and will not be repeated here. ENTROPIES AT 298.1° K. FOR INORGANIC SUBSTANCES In the following pages, the same arrangement is followed as in the previous publication (96). All entropy values are expressed in 15° gram-calories per degree Kelvin per gram-formula mass of substance. The figures given for gases do not include the effect of nuclear spin, as is nearly universally customary at present. The estimates of accuracy in the case of the values obtained from heat-capacity data apply only to the existing measurements and to the necessary extrapolations as they are made. It is assumed usually that the substances are in such an energy condition at the lowest temperatures reached in the specific-heat measurements that the usual normal type of extrapolation may be made. No allowance is made for error in this assumption. The recent work on Gd2SO4. 8H2O and FeC13 illustrates the difficulties that may arise in obtaining the entropies of some paramagnetic substances. Also the data and calculations for such substances as CO, H20, and N20 show that the correct entropy is not obtained in all cases by indiscriminate application of the usual

Ontario Power Generation is building a 10.4-km water diversion tunnel in Niagara Falls, Canada. The tunnel is a two-pass, cast-in-place prestressed concrete-lined pres-sure tunnel with a nominal internal diameter of 12.7 m. It is mostly situated within the Queenston formation which swells in contact with fresh water and has very aggressive groundwater. Tunneling in this material presents challenges in both design and construction. The tunnel design includes for a membrane to eliminate the potential for rock swelling and to protect the concrete liner from the ground conditions. A unique three-stage Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) is being used and is expected to provide an equitable method of dealing with any variations in subsurface conditions.

The characteristic problems related to drilling a hole for evaluation of an orebody are generally quite similar, whether we&apos;re drilling a core hole, or a hole to obtain chip samples. The basic objective in each case is fundamentally an economic factor; to produce the maximum amount of usable information per hole at a reasonable footage price. The success of the drilled hole depends largely upon the amount of investigation and research spent on the prospective area and the ability to forecast the capable personnel needed plus the right kind of drills, ancillary equipment such as bits, muds and various additives necessary to make the drilling program successful. The driller is confronted with a wide variation of drilling problems due to the nature of subsurface conditions. Some of these problems are: overburden, which may consist of clays; sand; boulders; or glacial till. These surface conditions may exist up to 2,000 feet in depth and upon reaching bedrock, formations may consist of swelling shales, broken sandstones, and every conceivable rock-type, coupled with every known structural problem such as dips, faults, folds, etc., and to this added extras such as permafrost and/or ground water problems combine to increase the necessity why an understanding of the problems along with the proper reaction of the driller plus the formula to compensate for ground conditions is necessary to complete a drill hole. Since most geologists are familiar with diamond core drilling techniques, I would like to discuss other methods used in evaluating ore deposits.

The Challenger Gold deposit was discovered in 1995 by Dominion Mining Ltd in a remote western area of the Gawler Craton in South Australia. Mine development commenced in 2002 with initial production from an open pit supplemented by ore from a very small adjacent auxiliary pit. Development of the underground mine commenced in 2004. The orebody plunge of just less than 30 degrees requires careful attention to mine design. Production from the M1 orebody, with less than 800 ounces per vertical metre (ovm) and very limited æsurgeÆ capacity, requires careful scheduling and implementation to ensure continuity of ore feed for milling. Initial production results from underground stopes included more dilution than anticipated. The narrow, high-grade zones proved to have much more complex geometry than early interpretations had indicated. Greatly improved understanding of the mineralisation controls resulted in important changes being made to the underground mine design and method. Coupled with careful control of development and drilling and blasting practices, this resulted in an immediate reduction in dilution and high recoveries of the resource. The benefits of these changes flowed through in the 2005/06 financial year, resulting in a 150 per cent increase in gold production to 108 080 oz and a sharp reduction in cash operating costs to A$280/oz. This was followed in 2006/07 with production of 108 91 oz of gold at an operating cost of $309/oz and in 2007/08 with 109 326 oz of gold at $367/oz. Production to June 2008 has been mainly from the M1 orebody, with the lowest stoping to date on the 580 m Level (615 m below surface) above development mining on the 520 Level. The rate of vertical advance of mining this orebody has averaged 150 vertical metres per year. The increased current combined JORC compliant resource and reserve position of over one million ounces, now includes the M2 and M3 orebodies with a current total average gold inventory up to 1400 - 1500 ovm. Exploration has intersected other shoots and all shoots are open at depth. The adjacent M2 and M3 orebodies are being developed for stoping. The narrow width of these zones from 1 m up to 4 m will require continued focus on ore zone definition, accurate development and careful drill and blast practice. In addition, to minimise cost increases in the current period of rapidly escalating labour, equipment, consumables and energy costs, high productivities will need to be maintained to allow the established rapid mining advance to continue at low unit costs.

The segmentation of quarry blast smoke plumes is a crucial research area that has the potential to enhance safety, environmental monitoring, object detection, and regulatory compliance in the mining industry. Smoke plume segmentation can be used to identify the spatial extent and temporal evolution of smoke plumes generated by the blast. This information can be used to improve the understanding of blast dynamics and optimize blast designs. Furthermore, smoke plume segmentation can assist in identifying potential environmental and health hazards associated with the release of smoke and dust particles into the atmosphere during quarry blasts. However, many current smoke plume segmentation algorithms are designed for segmentation of smoke plumes from fires and are not suitable for segmentation of plumes from quarry blasts. The proposed method in this paper leverages the video frame captured before the blast as a stationary background image, which helps to reduce other confuser objects present in the image along with a selfadaptive clustering method. The color channels of the image are utilized based on the different contrast properties of the smoke, with a self-adaptive gradient compensation applied for edge detection of the smoke plume. This approach offers a novel and effective way to segment smoke in quarry blast analysis, with potential applications in the calculation of noxious gas volume and concentration within the plume. Compared to other algorithms, our method improves accuracy, decreases the false alarm rates, and reduces the overall miss rate. Overall, this paper contributes to the research on smoke plume image segmentation, particularly for quarry blast smoke plumes, which possess unique characteristics that require specialized algorithms for accurate segmentation.

The problem of rock hang-ups in underground mining operations has been a continuing one since the days of the “hang-up man”. This position commanded the highest pay of any underground worker in many historical Western U.S. underground bulk-mining operations, due to the occupational hazards of the job. Although underground mining techniques and especially work practices have changed greatly since then, the hang-up problem is a continuing one in many mines which use gravity flow of coarse rock in their transport systems or in those mines where stressed ground causes rock slabs to spa11 and bridge rock passes and stopes. In addition, with mechanized underground open-stoping mining methods now being used in many different types of ore deposits worldwide, this problem has again emerged as a very significant one in many of these highly mechanized operations. This is especially so where the remote operation of loaders is used for removing blasted rock from underground open stopes.
