New Zealand has been a significant producer of gold for over a century. Total recorded production is over 850 tonnes. There were three major periods of production: the first and biggest was between 1860 and 1880, the second was between 1895 and 1920 and the third was between 1930 and 1945. After 1945 gold production fell continually until 1980 when the major upward adjustment in gold price led to renewed interest. There have been important new developments in each of the known gold-rich areas: Westland, Otago and Coromandel and exploration for gold in these areas and in previously unprospected regions has reached unprecedented levels.

The MacIntyre Development of the National Lead Co. is located at Tahawus, N. Y. The operations involve the mining and concentrating of a titaniferous iron ore to produce an ilmenite concentrate and a magnetite concentrate. Construction of the MacIntyre plant was commenced during the summer of 1941, when world conditions threatened to cut off the supply of Indian ilmenite. An open pit mining operation was developed and the crushing and milling equipment put in operation in July 1942. A general description of the operation was given in the Adirondack Issue of Mining and Metallurgy for November 1943. The metallurgy of the mill operation was described by Mr. Frank R. Milliken,* Plant Manager, National Lead Company, MacIntyre Development, and presented at the AIME New York Meeting, February 1948.

"The interaction of amorphous silica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O,, C2H,OH, C,H,NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy, It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction of surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C,H,NO > C2H2OH > H2O.The use of IR spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature,"" For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1. Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-6 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity,7-9 catalysis,10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated-have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8N0), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by IR spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples17 have used transmission IR spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties, In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18,19 Moreover, according to a recent paper,20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry, In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H5OH, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface IR modes, Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents, Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16,17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification, Details of this work are given below,The Cab-O-Sil samples of silica used here were obtained from the Cabot Corporation of Tuscola, IL, In our earlier studies,14,20 we have shown these particles to be amorphous and about 0.05 am in size, For coverage of these particles with H20 and C2H50H, the following procedure was employed. The paper is founded on the results of an investigation on the softening behavior of a cold-rolled low carbon steel. This specimen, originally cold rolled 15 , 30 , 50 and 75% reduction in thickness, were annealed at several temperatures ranging from 481 to 687ªC. A temperature-time range was encountered over which strong competition between these processes was evident. An interpretation on the effect of test variable on determining which one of the competing processes dominated during annealing is presented.

The commercial application of electrolysis to zinc sulphate solutions for the production of metallic zinc is a development ·of the past twenty years. Earlier attempts failed to give satisfactory results, chiefly because certain harmful elements were either not recognised as being present in the solution, or, if recognised, suitable methods of removal had not been developed. The electrodeposition of zinc from zinc sulphate solution is extremely sensitive to the influence of a great many factors, all of which appear to be closely inter-related.Some of these factors tend to minimise the necessity for a high degree of purity of the solution, while other factors aggravate the harmful nature of certain impurities.The relationship existing betweBn the various factors in zinc electrolysis makes a general discussion of the injurious effect of impurities very difficult since, under one set of conditions a given concentration of an impurity may be of minor: importance, where its under another set of conditions the same concentration of that impurity may prove dangerous to successful electrolysis.

"Part 1. REDUCTION AND USE OF OXIDANTSSUMMARYA study has been made of the volumetric determination of molybdenum by reduction in the Jones reductor, receiving the reduced solution in a mixture of ferric alum and phosphoric acid, and titrating with standard oxidizing agents. In addition to potassium permanganate, which has long been utilized for this titration, potassium dichromate and ceric sulphate have been found to be applicable. The latter oxidants have been found to be especially useful in the form of dilute solutions for the determination of small amounts of molybdenum. The tests revealed that certain internal indicators give excellent results in these titrations.Reason for These ExperimentsThe following study was initiated with the hope of providing the mining and metallurgical industries with an accurate and rapid technical method for the determination of molybdenum in such low-grade materials as ores, rocks, tailings, steels, and alloys containing less than 0.3 percent molybdenum. Although the experimental work was designed with this purpose in mind, many of the results are applicable to material containing a higher percentage of molybdenum.While the Bureau of Mines had an experiment station in Colorado, considerable analytical work was done on what were then (up to about 1923) classed as rare metals. One of these was molybdenum; and in Bulletin 212, Bonardi's (1) 3/ 60-page chapter covered all methods for the analysis of molybdenum."

Continuous monitoring of mining impacts on the surrounding environment is a necessary sustainability criterion. Traditional monitoring approaches such as in situ sampling and airborne and satellite-based remote sensing have several limitations. Over the past few decades, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have evolved into popular platforms for remote sensing. UAV-based remote sensing has been successfully applied in different sectors, including agriculture, forestry, urban environments and disaster management. However, the potential of UAVs for mine environmental monitoring has not yet been fully established. INTRODUCTION Lac Minerals Ltd., a significant North American producer of gold and other metals for over three decades, recently completed the financing for its third discovery in an eight year period. From 1975 to 1982, three important gold deposits in Quebec and Ontario: namely Bousquet, Doyon and Hemlo, were located and tested by company geologists. When current development plans are complete, Lac will have injected $400 million into these deposits. A discussion of these projects and their financing reveals some extraordinary challenges faced by top mining management. Responses to these challenges developed by Lac management may interest executives planning to proceed with new North American gold or base metal mines. MINE DE BOUSQUET In 1976, we explored a property containing a large low grade surface gold deposit. The geologial setting was exciting and we tested recent rethinking about the volcanigenic genesis of gold and base metal occurrences. These ideas helped pus to persist in drilling a nearby conductor and 600,000 ton, 0.22 ounce/ton orebody was outlined. With gold at $Cdn.150 per ounce the feasibility was approved and work started February 1978. Availability of a company custom mill 35 miles away reduced our immediate capital needs to $8.5 million. First of all, understanding the geological significance of results at Bousquet was critical. Mine and surface exploration geologists at Lac are continually and closely working together to better understand the nature of gold deposits in the Shield. This management emphasis on both pure and mine geology meant that a much larger ore reserve could confidently be predicted. (A proposal to quickly develop and ship the ore to a nearby company mine was discarded.) Instead of designing just for the initial plan of 500 tons per day we therefore included headframe, shaft and hoisting capacity for 1,700 tons and provided a compartment for future shaft deepening. These prebuilt additions were welcomed within two years. The type of collaboration whereby surface and mine geologists make study and field projects of each other's problems sets the foundation for this predictive ability. At Lac, the traditional responsibility for and supervision of the mine geologist by the mine manager is modified by this collaboration. This adds interest and scope to the geologist's work and lets him think beyond production requirements. Besides such management considerations, dedicated, professional geologists with integrity and lots of practical experience are needed to plan successful developments like Bousquet. Second, projecting future bullion revenue was critical and our experience selling production for future delivery gave us a way to ensure that loan repayment at term would not be jeopardized by falling metal prices. Output from a single mine is often reduced or curtailed for numerous reasons, so "selling forward" is done best and with least risk by companies like Lac with more than one or two producing locations for that metal. At first, a forward marketing program was considered unwise, speculative and unorthodox by analysts and other producers. Declining markets in the early 1980s prolonged gold project capital recoveries however, and critics were better able to appreciate the usefulness of such a tool. The notion that gold miners shouldn't sell forward is rooted in the belief that long-run gold prices will rise as modern social theory implementation in democracies inevitably erodes currency values. Selling against this trend goes against this industry belief or "ethic" and is at odds with the company shareholder who expects the gold price to rise not fall. Nonetheless, an efficient tool is available to the gold producer (not to most other metal producers) to quickly disengage from adverse price trends or to lock in spot prices instantaneously for two years or more of profits. From time to time efforts have been made to classify rocks according to their hardness, toughness and abrasiveness, and to use these classifications to provide an indication of the ease or difficulty with which they may be drilled. However, rocks classified as of similar type on this basis may vary considerably in their .resistance to the penetration of a rock drill bit due to differences in their physical state.For instance, fine grained rocks of granular texture are more difficult to drill than equivalent' rocks of coarser structure, altered rocks drill more readily than unaltered ones, and silicified rocks usually exceedingly hard and tough may be so shattered by movement as to be drilled at a rate comparable to quite soft rocks. I. INTRODUCTION. THOSE who deem the subject of this paper an old and super¬seded one may recall with advantage the words of the great proverb-maker, bidding us to seek the new in the ashes of the old. The manufacture of wrought-iron began with the small hearth built upon an eminence, and relying on the wind for blast. Next came, either the hearth about 12 in. in diameter by 2 ft. in height, blown by a man operating two goat-skins for bellows, or, a hearth of greatly varying diameter and about 10 ft. high, depending for its blast upon natural draft. The former appeared in India, the latter in Burmah; and both were in operation until quite recently, though their origin is lost in prehistoric times. The Catalan forge was the evolutionary descendant of the foregoing, and the parent of the Blase-ofen, which in turn led to the high bloomary or " Stückofen," the father of the blast-furnace, as a producer of cast-iron. The production of cast-iron checked the growth of the direct processes; and led to the introduction of various hearths, such as the Walloon, for low-silicon irons; and the South Wales process, combining the run-out fire with the finery, for higher-silicon irons. Some of these are still in operation in localities possessing the necessary raw materials; and their product is used for purposes requiring wrought-iron of exceptional quality, the supply of which is still smaller than the demand. In January we published a questionnaire asking about the content of MINING ENGINEERING and about your interests. At the same time we hired an outside firm, READEX Inc., of St. Paul, MN, to send the same questionnaire to a sampling of about 1000 US members, selected on an nth name basis, so that we could have some preliminary numbers for the Annual Meeting in February. READEX sent us the final results of its survey in March. At that time, 525 responses of the 992 surveys sent out had been returned, for a 52.9% response, an extraordinarily high return for a low-key (no incentive for return) random sampling. On May 7, we cut off on tabulating returns from the magazine so that we could report the results to you in this issue. At that time, we had 594 questionnaires returned. Our 594 and READEX's 525 (we have assumed that relatively few people returned both), represent a 1119 return, about 3.5% of the approximately 32,000 who received the January issue of ME. About ME Through responses to the questionnaire, we were hoping to learn more about you, your interests, and how the magazine could better serve you. Those of you who responded, told us something positive-you look at or read the magazine. Of the 1119 respondents, 1068 or 95.4% indicated that they had read or looked through the November and/or December issues. Those of you who refer to the magazine once are 466 or 42.6%. Those of you who refer to the magazine two or three times are 559 or 51.1%. Those of you who refer to the magazine four or more times are 68 or 6.2%. How much time do you spend reading the magazine? Of those responding to this question: 186 spent up to 1/2 hr 16.6% 590 spent up to 1 hr 52.7% 292 spent 1-2 hr 26.1% 51 spent more than 2 hr 4.6% In an informal survey among our staff, we determined that most people spend 1/2 to 1 hr reading magazines to which they subscribe at home. Does that match your experience? Many of you, 764 or 69.4%, clip your magazine for further reference. Also, many of you, 513 or 64.2%, do not pass your copy on to another reader, indicating perhaps that you are clipping it or receiving the magazine at home. Those magazines that are passed on reach: 2 people - 159 - 20.0% 3-5 people - 95 - 11.9% 5 or more - 31 - 3.9% Answers to what portions of the magazine you find useful indicated that the top three were Industry News, feature articles, and Technical Papers; see Table 1. The "other" category included advertising-display, classified, and employment-Coming Events, product information, Washington Survey, new books, the reader service card, and Engineering Fundamentals. Of those responding, 797 or 75.3% indicated a preference for dual notation of SI (metric) with English units; 228 or 21.5% preferred all SI units; while 34 or 3.2% preferred SI with dual notation of other metric units. Based on the preliminary numbers reported by READEX for this question, the MINING ENGINEERING Committee in February voted to return to a policy of dual notation. This decision has been implemented. We asked for your appraisal of the technical level of the magazine. Of those responding, 78 or 7.4% indicated it is too technical, 147 or 13.8% indicated it is not technical enough, and 836 or 78.8% judged it to have the correct tech¬nical level. In response to the question about whether you like to read an occasional feature that is not technically oriented, 32 said no, but an overwhelming 97% (1024) said yes. Operators can also avoid unwelcome shutdowns due to frequent worn pipe changes and turndowns. Sandvik have been developing different customers and understand their process needs. The suitable selection materials that are able to withstand high levels of wear better than low alloy and carbon steel grades that are commonly used in industry is very important to improve the quality and increase productivity. UNS S32750 tubes were demonstrably superior to low alloy and carbon steels when used in Laying Head Pipe system regarding tubes lifetime, reducing replacement, production interruptions and increasing reliability.

Much concern has been expressed recently as to whether water supplies will be sufficient to support accelerated energy development foreseen in operation Independence. Taking the Nation as a whole, sufficient water is available for energy growth, but locally, as in arid parts of the Colorado Basin, limited water supplies will dictate economies in water use and affect plant siting. As Young and Thompson1 point out with respect to electric power generation, the term "water requirements" is misleading, as demand for water for cooling is sensitive to price of water and thus is quite flexible rather than the inflexible or fixed level implied by the word "requirement." Much the same is true of other energy conversion systems. Water is used in many aspects of energy production including mining and reclamation of mined lands, on-site processing, transportation, refining, and conversion to other forms of energy. In the East, South, Midwest, and along the seacoasts, water supplies are generally adequate for energy industries; most water problems in those regions relate to pollution rather than supply. West of about the 100th meridian, however, runoff is generally less than potential diversions and energy industries must compete with alternative uses for the limited available water supplies. Water is especially short in areas of less than 10 inches mean annual rainfall where natural precipitation generally is insufficient for establishing vegetation without irrigation. Extraction. The principal categories of extraction comprise coal mining, oil and gas production, uranium mining, and oil shale mining.

"This paper shows that smooth and accurate feed-hopper level control is essential for consistent cone crusher operation. The objective of the paper is to define the best practices for tight control of cone crusher feed-hopper level. The paper discusses the challenges involved in a delay-dominant level control problem (specifically, dead-time-induced performance and stability issues, mass flow disturbances, process and actuator non-linearity) and proposes five corresponding control structures. The performance of the proposed control structure candidates is evaluated in a simulation study and, finally, a full-scale experiment is conducted for the best-performing candidate. The results of this study emphasize the importance of control structure selection. While the most obvious control structures failed to deliver the desired performance, the best result was achieved by using control structures that eliminate the conveyor transport delay (dead-time) from the control loop. In practice, the control loop dead-time can be eliminated by either using an actuator (variable-speed feed conveyor) that is connected directly to the feed-hopper, or by redefining the process boundaries closer to the used actuator (regulate the circuit mass balance instead of feed-hopper level). The presented control structures provide means to achieve a consistent cone crusher performance and size reduction. This facilitates efforts to improve the plant’s performance and increases the plant’s overall stability."

There is no single factor that determines the appropriate capacity for a mining project. It is driven by the size of the resource, the capacity of the market, the availability of capital, the availability of power, the availability of water, and a myriad of other considerations. There is also no single solution to the question of how big the project should be. However, to develop a project, the study team needs to select the configuration options that it regards as the best for the project. To be able to make this selection, the study team should consider the range of available options and do so at a level of detail that gives it confidence in the conclusion but does not lead to multiple detailed design exercises. Having considered the range of options, and with a clear definition of the project owner’s objectives and constraints, the work to be carried into feasibility studies can be focused appropriately. This paper discusses the process of completing strategic mine planning to identify project configuration options to assist in the selection of the processing plant throughput rate (Capacity Study) for a large greenfield open pit mine. The processes described in this paper allow for the basis of design to be set for subsequent studies that meets the objectives at a risk profile acceptable to the owner.

The effect of mineralogy on the grindability was investigated using three copper ores – two sulphides and one oxide. The dominant copper minerals were identified by optical microscopy and mineral chemistry derived from SEM-EDS analysis. The sample designated sulphide 1 was borniterich, sulphide 2 ore was mainly chalcopyrite, and the oxide ore was predominantly malachite and minor azurite. The gangue minerals were identified using semi-qualitative XRD analysis. Sulphide 1 contained more than 80% (w/w) of quartz compared to about 70% in the other two ores. The Bond work indices were 13.8, 21.6, and 17.3 kWh/t for sulphide 1, sulphide 2, and oxide ore respectively. This suggested that the chalcopyrite-rich ore is the hardest, while the malachite-rich ore has intermediate hardness, and the bornite-rich ore is the softest. The brittleness indices of the ores were calculated using the chemical composition of the gangue, and a good correlation between brittleness indices and Bond work indices was observed, which highlights the importance of the gangue composition in determining the fracture behaviour of the ores. There is scope for further investigation into the relationship between ore mineralogy and comminution behaviour using other breakage characterization techniques.

Even the spectacular advent of the atomic bomb in the final days of the conflict did not displace it from its position of prime importance, although within a few years uranium will almost certainly be the "number one" material in the minds of military strategists, if it is not even now in that position. But both as fuel and as raw material for chemical industries, petroleum will hold the center of the stage for many years to come. Hardly any other substance illustrates so fully the manner in which science and technology may be combined to achieve the utmost success in contributing to human efficiency and comfort. Quintette Coal Limited (managed and 50% owned by Denison Mines Limited) operates an open pit coal mine located in northeastern British Columbia, in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. (See Fig. l). Mining commenced in 1982. The mine currently produces 4.75 million tonnes of medium volatile bituminous coal per year from three pits (Mesa, Wolverine and Shikano), using a truck/ shovel operation. (See Fig. 2). Conveyors and trucks transport run-of-mine coal to the heavy media/froth flotation process plan t, where it is cleaned and loaded into rail cars for delivery to the Ridley Island port at Prince Rupert, British Columbia. All coal is sold to the Japanese steel industry under a long term contract. The coal seams mined at Quintette are contained in the Lower Cretaceous Gates Formation. Mineable seam thicknesses vary from 0.6 m to 10 m. The regional structure of the area is typical of foreland fold and thrust belts, with open to tight folds and imbricate thrust faulting. The range of structural features found in the three pits, and their effect on mining, forms the subject of this paper.
