During the development of a mining project, samples are taken for metallurgical tests. The sample can be a composite sample made of material coming from a selection of various drilling products or a sample coming from a mining test. This sample can represent several tonnes of material which are analysed and split to be used in various tests.In the current case, a composite sample is dedicated to semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) pilot plant tests. The property of interest is then the size distribution of the material. The sample is mixed and a subsample is taken to measure the size distribution which is considered as the feed size distribution. Then the remaining material of the sample is divided in several subsamples for batch grinding tests at different operating conditions. The product of each grinding test is then analysed to measure its size distribution.The grinding performances are analysed at the light of the measured size distributions for feed and product. But what is the accuracy of the measurement of these size distributions? What is the variability of the feed knowing each feed is just a subsample of the initial sample?The Pierre Gy theory of sampling answers these questions.The current paper presents, through a real example, the calculation of the measurement error of the size distributions and the variability of the feed between the different tests. The flotation circuit and the reagents of the all-sliming flotation about low grade and hard operation on zinc oxide ore are researched in the paper. The results indicated that there are many types of zinc minerals in this ore, and the composition is very complex. They include hemimorphite, smithsonite, hydrozincite and so on. The ore is seriously sliming. In light of the ore properties, three kinds of flowsheets have tested. They are gravity concentration (cleaning tables), flotation, combined process of gravity concentration and flotation. The test showed that the recovery of zinc is only 17.08% in the gravity separation. In combined process of gravity separation and flotation, the recovery of zinc concentrate is close to 70%. But the flow-sheet is complex and hard to control in the production. The floatation circuit is feasible. In the test, it pay attention to investigate the new combined reagent which is used in selective all?sliming flotation process. The effects of slime are eliminated by the multi-loop treatment of middling. In flotation, the final recovery of concentrate is 88.76%; the grade is 29.50%. The recovery of physical ore is 93%; and the recovery of -10mm fraction is more than 65%.

In the present study the effect of using different grinding media, viz, ceramic balls, forged steel balls, 15% Cr steel balls, stainless steel and mixture of stainless steel and 15% Cr steel balls (50:50) on the flotation performance of a Platinum Group Mineral (PGM) UG2 ore was investigated. Test work was conducted using a laboratory scale horizontal tumbling mill and a batch flotation cell. Power draw to achieve a specific P80 was determined for each media type. Changes in flotation behaviour were evaluated in terms of particle size distribution, water recovery, solid recovery and valuable mineral recovery. pH, Eh and DO levels were also measured. Grinding products of five different media produced similar solids and water recovery, which is indicative of the froth characteristics, but the grades and recoveries of PGE and chromite were different. The product obtained when using ceramic media showed the best flotation performance, producing the highest PGE recovery and the lowest Cr2O3 recovery. The products obtained when using stainless steel balls (SS) produced the lowest PGE recovery and highest Cr2O3 grade and recovery. The paper proposes possible reasons to explain these observations which may have significant importance for the operation of a PGM concentrator.

As the tunneling industry continues to adopt Tunnel 4.0, digital twins of the tunnel construction site are becoming standard requirements for tunneling projects. However, the benefits of these remain unproven to many practitioners. The paper discusses the various implementations of digitalization and describes efforts to combine all data types to analyze the relationships between influences, predictions and performance in a single digital platform. This includes data pertaining to investigations, design, construction, monitoring and post-construction asset performance and management. Based on 16 years of global tunneling projects the paper aims to quantify the tangible and intangible benefits of such systems. Using a number of real examples, the paper describes where opportunities were taken and where they went unrealized. Challenges and considerations for both procuring and developing these digital twins are also discussed.

THE percentage of manganese used in commercial aluminum alloys is small, and yet this element is an important addition to some very valuable alloys. When used alone with commercial aluminum containing iron and silicon as impurities, the usual percentage in wrought materials is from 1 to 1.5 per cent., whereas castings may contain as much as 2 per cent. An aluminum-manganese alloy containing nominally 1.25 per cent. manganese is much used in sheet form for the manufacture of cooking utensils and other articles requiring a little greater strength and hardness than could be obtained with commercially pure aluminum. It is also used for various purposes in the form of rods, tubes and pipes. The aluminum-manganese alloys, both wrought 'and cast, offer excellent resistance to many kinds of corrosion attack. The U. S. Naval Gun Factory uses an aluminum alloy containing from 1 to 2 per cent. each of copper and manganese, for both castings and forgings. Manganese is also used, up to about 1 per cent., as a minor alloying .element in several of the strong aluminum alloys of the duralumin type. It is felt that the role of this element when thus used has not been fully understood, but it is believed that the results obtained in this investigation will throw additional light on the subject. The earlier work on the system aluminum-manganese was general in nature, and no detailed investigations of the relations existent in the useful aluminum-rich alloys have been reported. Guilletl1in 1902 surveyed the system, and Hendrichs2 in 1908 published an equilibrium diagram which, although based on .few data, is often used in the literature. Fragmentary work has also been done by other investigators."

"Results from a study directed towards identifying and measuring the mutagenicity of diesel exhaust particulate matter involved in mining exposures, especially those which may synergistically affect genotoxic hazard, are presented in this paper. Particulate matter emissions from a diesel engine, representative of the ones found in underground mines, were sampled and assayed to determine the genotoxic potential as a function of engine operating conditions. Diesel exhaust was diluted in a multi-tube mini-dilution tunnel and the particulate matter was collected on 70 mm fluorocarbon coated glass fiber filters as well as on 8"" x 10"" hi-volume filters. A six mode steady state duty cycle was used to relate engine operating conditions to the mutagenicity potential.Protocols developed for using a primary component of pulmonary surfactant as a medium for collecting and applying respirable particulate material to cells for mutagenicity testing offer a true representation of in-vivo delivery of such respired aerosols to pulmonary cells and the genetic material within . The surfactant dispersion technique is discussed in this paper. Methods have been developed to sample and assay the diesel soot and diesel soot/mineral dust complexes which would not compromise the surface and physical properties of the particulate material."

In the marbel industry, ore reserves refer to the produced tonnage of orthogonal prismatic, defect-free blocks of commercial sizes and of marketable aesthetical quality. On the contrary, in the mining sector, ore reserves refer to the tonnage of ore with grade above some cut-off value. While in the mining sector ore reserves are reported according to existing standard guidelines, the marble industry has no standardmethod. The purpose of this paper is to present a method to estimate white marble reserves using drill coring or borehole wall logging and limited joint mapping on exposed marble surfaces. Data pertaining to fracture orientation, fracture frequency, size, and whiteness were collected. The primary phase of marble characterization is followed by the discretization of the orebody into a three-dimensional array of orthogonal prismatic blocks, where the marble whiteness and fracture intensity are attribute values. Both these variables are considered to obey continuous and not discrete probability distributions. The discretization is performed using computer aided design and the Block Kriging techniques. An outline to improve the description of a given marble ore deposit at the exploration stage is presented for the prediction of marble block size distribution from joint count measurements along diamond drill cores. An example case of a white dolomitic marble quarry is used to demonstrate these methods.

The major deposits of anhydrite and secondary gypsum in Jamaica occur discontinuously at a single horizon within the Lower Eocene succession of southeast Jamaica. They are not intruded from other horizons of different age, as has previously been supposed. The gypsum and anhydrite occur in a regressive sequence at the junction between marine (Richmond Formation, Halberstadt Volcanics, Halberstadt Limestone) and overlying non-marine (Wagwater Formation) sediments. They are thought to have been formed in an arid supratidal (sabkha) environment. A variety of 'nodular' structures occurs in the gypsum and anhydrite which can be related to early diagenetic processes and compaction effects. All gradations exist between single isolated anhydrite nodules and structureless anhydrite due to closer packing and coalescence of nodules. The structures and textures in the anhydrite are thought to be consistent with penecontemporaneous formation from gypsum crystals rarely more than 2 cm in diameter. Single anhydrite nodules are not usually larger than 2 cm; nodules of greater size are compound, due to the coalescence of several smaller nodules. Some large compound nodules may have developed from single sand crystals or rosettes. Compaction of anhydrite appears to have been largely mechanical, but some rocks have an aligned fabric, suggesting later flowage

The paper is an attempt to co-relate the findings of pile capacity using a number of formula suggested by various authors with the actual field load test results. Five locations consisting of wholly sandy or clayey soils were selected for this purpose. The clayey soils are on a hilly area having clays of medium to stiff consistency upto a depth of 20 m The sandy soils are near the bank of a river having angle of internal friction 'Ø' value ranging from 30 to 35 Degree. The details of the soil properties are given in Table-1 Bored cast-in-situ piles of 30 cm diameter and a length varies from 6.5 m to 13 m were designed and cast for load test to be carried out. The load applied was twice the design load. The load vs settlement curves were obtained. The theoritical values obtained by formula suggested by various authors were superimposed on the curves. From the careful study of these curves it is seen that De Ruiter and Berigen values are close to the actual results for clayey soil. For sandy soil it is found that both the BIS method and Meyerhof method found to give conservative resuslts. A multiplication factor is suggested to theoritical values for obtaining satisfactory results.

BUTANE OPERATED drilling rigs are a recent innovation in the petroleum industry, so extensive data on their operation are not available. However, experience indicates that, within limitations, as much can he accomplished with butane as with steam, at a decided reduction .in expense of installation and cost of operation. Commercial butane is a liquid motor fuel similar to gasoline, but much more volatile, so that it has to be stored under pressure. At 10° F. it is liquid at atmospheric pressure, but at 100° it has a pressure of 70 lb. or more. As soon as the pressure is reduced, it turns to vapor and in that state is far more easily mixed with the air necessary for combustion. Butane occurs as a by-product in the absorption process of natural gasoline extraction from casing-head gas. The product has been used to some extent 10 raise the octane value of gasoline. However, because of its volatile nature, such admixture is stable only to a limited degree. Attempts also have been made to introduce the product in a gaseous form into oil- hearing formations in repressuring work. It has, however, until recently, for the most part been wasted.

Loussavaara-KiirunavaaraAB?s (LKAB) iron ore mine, Kiirunavaara, is of magnetite type and associated with apatite, a calcium phosphate mineral. Rare earth elements (REE) have been found in connection with the apatite but also in other minerals. An apatite concentrate was produced by flotation, in order to investigate the possibilities to extract REE from the apatite by hydrometallurgical means. The content of rare earth elements calculated as oxides (REO) was 0.44% in the concentrate. Initially, leaching was done with large excess of sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and nitric acid to study the REE solubility with different acids. In sulfuric acid, the leaching recoveries of the different REE varied between 35% and 69%. The reasons for the relative low recoveries, were that the rare earth elements precipitated together with huge amounts of gypsum, that was formed during leaching. However, both hydrochloric- and nitric acid gave almost complete extraction of the REE into solution. Analysis of the small leaching residue obtained, revealed, that mainly the light REE remained in the residue indicating that a small part of the light REE were present in the concentrate, in some acid, insoluble mineral other than apatite. With the aim to separate the REE from the phosphoric acid, the solutions from hydrochloric- and nitric acid leaching were neutralized to a pH of approximately 2 with ammonia. During neutralization, REE were precipitated as phosphates with good recoveries and a concentrate of 10.5% REO suitable for further upgrading was obtained, while the remaining solution can be used for fertilizer production. In further solvent extraction studies, it was shown, that after re-dissolution the REE could be effectively extracted by Cyanex 923, thus allowing for purification from calcium and phosphate ions. The valuation of resources companies is open to a huge amount of subjectivity. Not only are valuations subject to fast changing assumptions, such as commodity prices, exchange rates, ore grades, etc., but there is also no common agreement on the methodology to be used. To borrow from Malcolm Fraser, life wasn't meant to be easy for the resource company valuer. I will demonstrate three recent examples of valuations carried out but where the market or actual transactions done show very different results.

Corporate requirements are closely aligned with the GARD Guide principles of early geochemical characterization and prediction followed by selection and implementation of management strategies to prevent or minimize ARD. Each operation is required to design and implement an ARD and Mineral Waste Management Plan. Successful implementation of the plan requires commitment at all levels of the company, from senior management, to geologists, mine planners, environmental staff and equipment operators. Examples of the successful integration of ARD management strategies into mine operations are cited from several mines.

The organisation?s many years of experience in novel rockbreaking, together with its world-wide collaborator network, has placed it in a unique position to assist the mining industry and manufacturers in developing and/or adapting existing technologies for application underground. Currently a range of technologies are being investigated, which have reached different stages of maturity. The Cuyuna iron range in Crow Wing County, Minn., is the principal producer of manganiferous iron ore in the United States. The ore is mined from a manganiferous iron formation in the bedrock of the Cuyuna district. This iron formation is divided into two general lithologic types-thin-bedded and thick-bedded. The unoxidized, thin-bedded iron formation is composed of iron silicate with associated fine-grained carbonates of iron and manganese. The thick-bedded iron formation carries iron and manganese oxides with intimately associated silica. Oxidation and leaching of the original iron formation have been the most influential factors in producing manganiferous iron-ore concentrations in quantities large enough to exploit on a commercial basis. The unoxidized and the partly oxidized and enriched iron-formation materials are suitable as a source of ferrograde manganese ore. These materials have been classified according to their amenability to mineral dressing and degree of oxidation and leaching.

"IN APRIL, 1965, the employee relations department (then called the personnel department) was established as a separate function within the company. Its aims and objectives were to hire an effective work force to operate the open-pit mine and the mill, which were at that time under development and construction. It was also directed to develop a sound policy for employee relations to assist the company in maintaining a stable and properly motivated work force, which included the establishment of satisfactory wage rates and fringe benefits, safety, fire protection and security. During the 8 years that the department has been in existence the scope of the company's operations has expanded to include a zinc plant and an underground mine. The work force has enlarged accordingly and now totals 1,680 employees working at the two sites, separated by 34 road miles. To cover the employee relations functions the department has a total of 29 members at the two sites. The department is organized under a superintendent, who has an employee relations supervisor, a safety director and a fire chief reporting directly to him. The employee relations supervisor, with 2 employment officers and 2 clerks, handles hiring, first-stage employee grievanoos, terminations, employee records, and the organization of company-sponsored functions and meetings. Safety, training and security are the responsibility of the safety director, who has 3 safety supervisors, 16 security men, 1 first-aid attendant and one hearing conservation technician to service the two sites. The fire chief operates as a one-man section responsible for plant-wide fire inspections and fireoriented training. Although"

En este sentido, el presente trabajo describe el origen de los depósitos a partir de los descubrimientos de módulos manganíferos en el océano pacífico que hicieron Thompson y Murray. Posteriormente Buchanam demuestra la existencia de módulos ferro-manganíferos en aguas poco profundas ( 200 m. ), de composición diferente de las provenientes de aguas profundas. De otro lado, el trabajo señala también la división de los minerales marinos en tres categorías: las sales disueltas y en organismos, los sedimentos y depósitos en el suelo profundo submarino y los depósitos consolidados e inconsolidados de la plataforma continental. Por último, se describe los procesos de beneficio y las ventajas de la explotación de los recursos submarinos en el futuro de la minería submarina.

During the 1980s, a revolution has been taking place in industrial minerals marketing. Transportation deregulation and a handful of creative marketing and distribution managers have completely changed the rules for marketing many industrial minerals. Minerals are being transported much farther than in prior decades and at much less cost. Bulk and package terminals are becoming increasingly common as a means to take advantage of freight rate savings and to provide enhanced service to faraway customers. Water and rail transportation are being used increasingly to penetrate markets considered unreachable just a few years ago. No longer do the textbook rules of thumb for industrial minerals marketing apply. This author recalls three of those rules he was taught in mineral economics graduate school in the 1970s. As recorded in class notes: • construction aggregates are seldom shipped more than 32 km (20 miles) from the quarry; • cement is sold within 240 km (150 miles) of the mill; and • industrial sand is sold regionally - it is freight constrained to a market radius of no more than 320 to 400 km (200 to 250 miles) from the plant. And yet, the author looks up in 1989 and observes overland movements of aggregates of many hundred miles, overland movements of cement and industrial sand of 1600 km (1000 miles) or more, and water movements of both aggregates and cement into the United States from sources halfway around the world. Truly, industrial minerals are in the midst of a marketing revolution. The companies that have led this revolution have enjoyed considerable financial success in the 1980s. They have enhanced their profitability by increasing market share, capacity utilization, and average selling prices by taking product to remote markets where premium prices are available. They have consistently outperformed their competition, many of whom remain unaware that the marketing revolution going on around them is actually a transportation/distribution revolution. The successful industrial minerals company of the next 10 to 15 years must participate in the transportation revolution as it continues to evolve.
