This paper describes a methodology used to develop a numerical model for the study of particulate suspension rheology. Initially, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models of different rheometer geometries were tested with both a Newtonian fluid (water), and a non-Newtonian Herschel-Bulkley slurry. Rheograms were reproduced from these models and compared to experimental values. Once a single-phase model had been validated, a coupled model combining CFD and the Discrete Element Method (DEM) was created. Two open source software packages were chosen. CFD is implemented using Open FOAM®, and DEM using LIGGGHTS. These two different codes were coupled via another program called CFDEM. This coupled model is currently capable of modeling spherical particles in a suspending liquid. DLVO forces have been included in some models to account for inter-particle forces due to the surface charge on the particles. The coupled model is currently being validated. This paper presents a review of research conducted at the University of Waterloo concerned with the application of aluminum alloy sheet and tube in automotive structures and body panels. The research has focussed on formability prediction and results using a range of damage-based formulations. These models include continuum-level damage approaches and, more recently, a so-called percolation damage approach intended to capture microstructural heterogeneity effects on damage development. This paper presents applications of these damage approaches to simulate formability of experiments considering stretch flange panels. The experiments consider drawbead effects associated with the bend/unbend deformation as the material flows through the drawbead. Recent work on simulating in situ X-ray tomography experiments that capture damage evolution during tensile deformation will also be reviewed.

Inn mining communities throughout the western United States, cows have always been part of the landscape as they graze on surrounding rangelands. Until recently, mining companies regarded these animals as something to be kept off their properties — especially any freshly reclaimed lands. During the last few years, though, this situation has begun to change. Today, cattle can be seen in a handful of mine settings, moving up and down the slopes of mine tailings and waste rock. These animals are being used by several companies to do some of the reclamation work once performed by large earth-moving equipment, mechanical spreaders, rippers and seed drillers. This is because cows can contour slopes more naturally and produce and spread soil nutrients in ways that tractors and ripping machines cannot.

"We investigated experimentally and theoretically the adhesion behavior of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (At.f6) to different copper sulfides. The adsorption experiment showed cell densities of 10.74 × 106, 8.06 × 106, 3 × 106, 4.24 × 106 and 2.35 × 106 cells/cm2, respectively, on the surfaces of djurleite, bornite, covellite and chalcopyrite. The order was: djurleite > bornite > covellite > chalcopyrite. The results indicate that A. ferrooxidans has high affinity to adhering to the surfaces of djurleite and bornite in the acidic region. But the thermodynamic approach predicts that there will be no attachment of At.f6 to the surfaces of bornite, covellite and chalcopyrite. This discrepancy is due to the inadequate description of electrostatic interactions. The DLVO approach shows attachment of At.f6 to the surfaces of djurleite, bornite and covellite, and repulsion between At.f6 and chalcopyrite. The DLVO approach can explain the differences of the adhesion of At.f6 to different copper sulfides.IntroductionThe bioleaching of low-grade copper sulfides is a developing technology, and has been applied successfully to the extraction of copper from secondary sulfide minerals (Watling, 2006; Pradhan et al., 2008; Akcil and Deveci, 2010). The bioleaching of chalcopyrite is still a major challenge (Bosecker, 1997; Brierley and Brierley, 2001; Ehrlich, 2004). A study conducted at Billiton Process Research showed the following preferential order of sulfide minerals leached by mesophilic cultures: chalcocite > bornite > cubanite > covellite > pyrite > enargite > carrolite >> chalcopyrite (Dew et al., 1999). The bacteria can solubilize the valuable metals from the orebodies by the oxidation of minerals. Bacterial adhesion plays a critical role in the bioleaching processes (Chen et al., 2008; Harneit et al., 2006). Generally, bacterial adhesion can be explained by surface thermodynamics and the extended DLVO theory, in which the adhesion energy between the bacteria and mineral is calculated as a function of the separation distance (Sharma, 1999; Bos et al., 1999; Sharma and Hanumantha Rao, 2002). These methods take into account Lifshitz-van der Waals interactions, electrostatic interactions and acid-base interactions (Busscher et al., 2010). These interactions are very well understood and formulated in mathematical equations. The most important inputs in these calculations are surface energy, surface charge, electron donation and electron acceptance on the bacterial cell surface and mineral."

Progress made in a second and final metallurgical investigation made by the Bureau of Mines of near-surface Hawaiian bauxitic deposits from Kauai, Maui, and Hawaii Islands, and on a deeper deposit from Kauai, is reported. Previously reported Al2O3 extractions were increased by modifying conventional processes to fit the ore being tested. Increases in Al2O3 extraction were: Kauai, from 82.8 to 95.4 percent; Maui, 85.5 to 94.1 percent; and Hawaii, from 79.5 to 86.4 percent. Use of a "caustic-reduction sinter, leaching, and magnetic separation process" for Al2O3 extraction also produced an iron concentrate of commercial grade, except for titanium content. No successful method was developed for the recovery of a satisfactory titanium concentrate.

L. D. GODSHALL, Everett, Washington: This very interesting paper cannot fail to command the attention of every one who has ever had experience in the amalgamation of gold-ores. I wish to call attention to three very important facts brought out very prominently by the paper, namely: 1. The extent of accumulation of amalgam on copper plates in the form of scale, not removable in the ordinary manner; 2. The change in the relative quantity of the two metals in the amalgam as we. recede from the battery-discharge; 3. The difference in fineness of the bullion obtained from the above-mentioned scale as compared with the bullion from the daily clean-ups. From Mr. Bayliss's figures we find that during the life of the plate in question 14,942 tons of ore were crushed, yielding amalgam of the value of $5.03 per ton, or a total value of $75,158.26. The amalgam accumulating on the plate during this time as scale, we find to have had a value of $8340.54, or $0.558 per ton of ore treated, representing 11.09 per cent. of the total amount of amalgam saved in the ordinary clean-up; or, taking the amalgam saved by daily clean-up plus the amalgam-scale as representing the total saved on this plate, or 100 per cent., we find that the daily clean-up saved 90.01 per cent., while the scale represented 9.99 per cent. The above figures do not include some additional amalgam still adhering to the plate after scale had been removed. We are told that this was not an exceptional case at the Drum Lummon, but that other plates have even yielded a third more than the one in question. The interesting query now comes up, whether this experience at the Drum Lummon is exceptional or universal at all mills; and another question arises, as to how long such an accumulation might continue,

The final criterion of the payability of gold production must necessarily be the cost per ounce. While the cost per ton or per cubic yard is a convenient comparative measure, and a necessary one for operating control, it is obviously insufficient as a means of judging whether or not, in a given set of circumstances, a gold production operation can be carried out economically.. An alternative method, which brings in the ton or cubic yard as a unit of measurement, is to determine what the cost per ton or per cubic yard is equivalent to, in terms of pennyweights or grains at the ruling price of gold. But this is really only another way of stating that the cost per unit of product is the ultimate measure of profit or loss, and not the cost per unit of input material.It is accordingly of interest to determine the cost per ounce of Australian gold production and to compare it with the cost of gold production in some other parts of the world which are important gold producers. The attached Appendix, which it, is believed comprises practically all Australian mines of any consequence (except Big Bell and the de Bernales group, for which. insufficient information is available), shows this information for financial years ending between 31st December, 1938, and 31st December, 1939, the production of gold dealt with being some 1,084,000 oz., or 66% of the total Australian production for 1939. For comparative purposes the cost of producing gold at representative mines in New Guinea, New Zealand, Fiji, Canada, India, West Africa and Rhodesia, and the average cost of production at the Rand mines, has also been included.It is obviously necessary in a study of this sort that the basis of the cost should be clearly set out and should be as nearly as possible uniform. The principles and application of amalgam electrolysis to the recovery of zinc and tin from secondary products were studied; this Bureau of Mines project was one phase of investigating the development of more efficient methods for processing iron-bearing zinc and tin to produce both base metals of high purity. Zinc of 99-99-percent purity was recovered from galvanizer's dross with recovery efficiency of 98 percent. Tin of 99.9-to 99.99-percent purity was recovered from hardhead with recovery efficiency of 81 percent. Both materials were treated by the same method in separate systems. Mercury was used to leach zinc from dross and tin from hardhead to form amalgams of each metal, both of which were subsequently refined electrolytically to produce high-purity metal. Impurities that were contained in both secondary products behaved as theoretically predicted; impurities that were insoluble in mercury remained as sludge in the leaching column. Except for lead, the readily amalgamated impurities were prevented from fouling the electrolyte by the blocking action of the amalgam electrode. Lead impurity in the tin-refining system dissolved and immediately precipitated as the sulfate. The primary advantage of the amalgam refining method lies in direct recovery of the extremely pure base metal from highly contaminated secondary material.

The Bureau of Mines stabilized 10 acres of windblown copper mill tailings at McGill, Nev., by a combination chemical-vegetative procedure. Legumes, winter wheat, wheat-grasses, and wild rye were seeded, and the area was subsequently sprayed with a resinous adhesive chemical to stabilize the sands until the vegetation could grow. During the year since treatment, the area has been well stabilized against wind erosion. The established vegetation appears to be capable of self-perpetuation and renewal without irrigation. The cost of stabilizing the area was $135.50 per acre.

This paper is presented from the viewpoint of the mill operator and maintenance supervisor. Its purpose is to highlight the things that have been accomplished by the mill designers to lighten the load for the maintenance superintendent and to reduce the overall costs for the plant operator. The complexity of plant design, the civil and structural engineering problems encountered when the satisfactory maintenance layout is accomplished are appreciated, and the writer is fully aware of the complexities of these problems. However, it is not the purpose of this particular paper to dwell upon these problems, nor to emphasize or de-emphasize the problems of the civil, mechanical and electrical engineers. It is simply that the paper will attempt to review what these people have accomplished in spite of the many technical problems. This paper then is prepared with the operator and maintenance people?s viewpoint. What is their definition of design for maintenance? It is the writer's interpretation that the various design concepts which mean improved maintenance are such items as (I) maintenance areas, (2) laydown space for maintenance materials in specific maintenance jobs, (3) the inclusion of bridge cranes in the plant and specific design of the craneways to accomplish flexibilities for the cranes, and (4) the location of the piece of equipment to allow maintenance people to work around the equipment - - - this specifically includes the orientation of the particular piece of equipment.

Treatment of Gold-Bearing Oxide High-Clayish Ores The analysis of modern state of treatment technologies of gold-bearing oxide high-clayish ores showed that the main method applied both in Russia and abroad is sorption leaching and heap leaching with preliminary granulating. The use of any of these processes depends on many factors including average gold grade, site and area of a deposit, clay content and etc. The two processes are often used at the same deposit. In this case, rich ores are treated according to a plant technology, poor ores and ores with cut-off grade are treated with heap leaching. Both technologies possess their own advantages and disadvantages. A plant technology is characterised by high recovery with higher capital and operating costs at the same time. Lower recovery during heap leaching can be attributed to an unstable quality of ore granulating due to both technological and weather conditions. In case of poor high-clayish ores, the use of a combined ore treatment is possible and profitable. It includes the ore disintegration and a clayish fraction treatment by using a heap leaching. In this case, capital and operating costs reduce in comparison with a plant technology and the recovery increases in comparison with heap leaching. Sometimes it reaches a plant recovery. These ores possess special features. As a rule, gold is associated with ore fraction, so it liberates readily from the association with ore ore-forming minerals even with relatively coarse grinding explain their high solution velocity in a hydrometallurgical cycle. Clayish ores are characterised by high sorption activity to gold cyanide complexes as well as extremely low velocity of filtration and thickening of slimic pulps at the same time. The paper describes the options of oxidised high-clayish ores treatment, such as, a plant technology (PIP and CIP process), heap leaching and a combined technology (disintegration, heap leaching of a crystalline fraction and sorption cyanidation). The obtained results were used when selecting a treatment technology and during construction of a plant for oxidised high-clayish ores treatment.

The development of pelletizing during the last ten years has continued, however, self-fluxing pellets have not been regularly and commercially produced for use in blast furnaces, except as Kobe Steel, Ltd., Japan. This paper tells about unique developments for self-fluxing pellets, and their effects when used in Kobe Steel's No. 3 blast furnace at the Nadahama Works (inner volume 1845 Nm3, hearth diameter 9.5 m)., Several phases of the pelletizing process are discussed individually, and also their relation to performance in blast furnace operation. Special emphasis is placed on proper preparation of the limestone added to the raw materials, and indurating at optimum conditions. Means of improving pellet quality by correct control of size distribution of the raw materials used in pelletizing, and indurating temperatures, are also discussed. As basicity (CaO/SiO2) of pellets increased 0. 1, coke consumption decreased 3. 8 to 4. 2 kg per ton of hot metal, when using 70% pellets in the iron burden.

Following considerable experience with the beneficiation of Wabana iron ore by standard methods, a study was made of the benefits to be obtained by semi-reduction. The basis of the laboratory program was an extensive mineralogical and liberation investigation which guided subsequent work. Partial reduction and beneficiation on a laboratory scale was carried out on lump ore and fines. The reduced ore was magnetically concentrated and the concentrated fines were briquetted. Data are presented on reducibility, sizing vs reduction rate, magnetic cobbing and separation, and the elimination of phosphorus. Past work is reviewed briefly and comments are made on the relation of laboratory to pilot-scale tests.

This paper presents experimental evidence that supports the use of bromine/bromide as a potential alternative to conventional cyanidation for gold leaching. The study evaluated a brominebased lixiviant, Stabilized Bromine, with considerably lower vapour pressure than liquid bromine. Using a rotating device, the rate of gold dissolution was determined at various concentrations of this reagent. The reactivity of pure pyrite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite minerals was also evaluated in stabilized bromine reagent. Furthermore, bromine leaching of gold in a number of gold bearing ores was undertaken. Results showed that significantly higher gold recovery can be achieved with bromine than with cyanide when leaching gold encapsulated in sulphides, but bromine consumption was high owing to simultaneous oxidation of the sulphides. The greatest promise for the bromine leach process was with oxidized gold ores. The recovery of gold from oxide ores with bromine was comparable to that achievable with cyanide and bromine consumption was reasonable when leaching was conducted at a near neutral pH of ~6. In the case of oxidized gold ores containing copper mineralization, it is possible that bromine consumption may be lower than cyanide consumption, since there is evidence to suggest that bromine is less reactive than cyanide with copper minerals.

The production of oil during the early development of new oil fields is usually accompanied by large quantities of natural gas. Since In most fields gas under pressure is the main source of the energy causing the oil to move throug the sands into the wells and thence to the surface, this coincident production of natural gas will contime as long as present day producing methods are used. Generally the use of this gas is restricted, and markets are not readily available Consequently, a large portion of the gas produced at such times is often wasted by being blown into the air.

THE Wellington Lake power plant of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, about 25 miles from Goldfields, Saskatchewan, is the second hydro-electric project operating in that Province, the first being the Island Falls plant of the Churchill River Power Company which serves the operations of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company at Flin Flon, Manitoba. The Churchill River project develops 90,000 h.p. at 56-ft. head; the Wellington Lake plant 3,300 h.p. at 75-ft. with pro-vision for an additional 3,300 h.p. unit. Churchill River power is trans-mitted at 110,000 volts over a 58-mile line of steel towers to Flin Flon and an additional 45 miles over a wooden pole-line to Sherritt-Gordon. Our steel tower-line is 22 miles long, and the voltage is 60,000; this choice be-cause certain such equipment was available from Trail. The diversion of 15,000? second-feet at 56-ft. head for 90,000 h. p. at Churchill river dwarfs our 500 second-feet flow at 75-ft. head for 3,300 h.p. In both cases, the main obstacles to be overcome during plant construction were the lack of transport facilities and the short open season. Let it be noted here that this paper deals mainly with those phases of plant construction which were particularly interesting to the writer. With-out these variations from the ordinary routine, this is just another power project whose story is better told by the accompanying charts and pictures. To many members of the Institute it is still just that; but I am writing for those who, like myself, have been too seldom responsible for major under-rakings at an appreciable distance from a railway siding. When it was planned in early 1937 to erect a 1,000-ton mill at our Box mine, both hydro and Diesel power were discussed. With ten years' ore in sight, even an expensive hydro project, such as ours turned out to be, produces kilowatts materially below the 2-cent operating cost of a Diesel plant using fuel-oil at 14 cents a gallon.

This report is a compilation of results of preliminary concentration tests of seven manganese-ore samples. Six of the seven samples were submitted through the Mining Division, and 1 from Mexico was submitted by H. A. Doerner, formerly chief metallurgist, Region III. These investigations were made to assist development of mineral resources and particularly to aid economical exploitation of marginal or complex ores, from which strategic or critical minerals may be recovered.

"In making strategic economic decisions, it is important for a mining company to gain insights on the impact of significant political, social and economic issues when planning for present and future mines. The size of any mine, measured by the average number of employees working in the mine, will likely vary according to the pressures generated by the significant issues from one year to another. The objective of this study is to develop a model that represents U.S. underground coal mine size transitions during the period 2002-2012 using data derived from the MSHA databases. Coupled with information on significant issues over the past ten years, this model is used to gain insight on the impact of the issues on mine sizes. Results indicate that the structural impact of the combined driving pressures can be discerned by examining the year-to-year stability of mine-size categories. The effects of The MINER Act, the Obama Administration environmental policies on coal, and the coal market are evident. The lessons learned from these analyses give good insights on what the industry and market responses have been on the structure of the underground coal industry over the period of study. INTRODUCTION It is apparent that key driving issues affect the structure and viability of the coal industry. The driving issues may be political, social, and/or economic in the final analysis, but are generally rooted in reaction to dramatic and publicized events or movements. Mine disasters, an increase in miners’ disease prevalence, strife in the coal fields, and negative environmental impacts on air, land or water can capture the attention of the media and the public. Some of the issues occur over a long period of time, like the current global climate change movement. The coal industry veteran can sense the changes in political and social sentiment, and attempt to react to the economic repercussions; however, the insights from the media and from unique combinations of driving pressures are difficult to fathom. Thus decisions made on inadequate information related to the driving pressures and their likely impacts could lead to missteps in corporate and market restructuring. One way to gain some more insight on the potential impacts is to examine the complicated restructuring of mine operations in reaction to the driving pressures of the recent past. This paper examines an 11-year history of the changes in the underground coal industry structure, as reflected by changes in the numbers of mines in various statuses by mine-size categories. Superimposed on the results of mine-size changes is a mapping of the key driving pressures that occurred over the same period, 2002-2012. It is assumed that using this methodology, some important insights can be gained on the immediate and delayed responses to the driving pressures during that period."
