Many mining wastes, especially those from the metal mining industry, have traditionally been treated as a matter of little or no value and in practice a cost burden. Some wastes, due to their reactivity characteristics, have emergent values that go beyond purely economic and into the environmentally beneficial realm. This paper discusses the changing paradigm of mine waste management. Such fundamental parameters such as cut off grade, and strip ratio, are positively impacted by the revaluation of waste rock material. Mine rock waste can now be seen as a commodity of value, similar to the underlying ore being mined and influences the economic performance of suitable projects. This valuable material can be used for industrial purposes including acid neutralization as well as the capture and long-term disposal of anthropogenic carbon dioxide. The Turnagain Nickel project, located in northern British Columbia serves as an example of how waste rock material can become an important matrix for carbon capture and sequestration and can benefit economically from it. By producing material that has emergent economic value as well as carbon capture and sequestration capabilities, the sequestration matrix producer is a beneficiary of new carbon credits that have a market value and is looked upon favourably by regulatory authorities and affected stakeholders.

Quality control procedures are increasingly important with today's higher capacity foundations and complex loading conditions. The need for a mobile, repeatable, nondestructive and economical load test method led to the development of an entirely new approach. The system described involves using solid propellant fuels to accelerate a reaction mass off the test pile. The force required to accelerate the reaction mass upward acts equally downward on the pile. Very high forces may be applied to the pile in a controlled, linearly increasing manner. The duration of the applied load is approximately 100 milliseconds. This rate of loading is slow enough to allow the pile and soil to react together as a composite rigid body. Pile/soil accelerations and velocities are low, typically 1 g and 1 m/s respectively. The effects combine to produce pile and soil response no longer dominated by the transfer of force via stress pulse (as with impact). Instead the pile force increases throughout the length of the pile, with pile top and toe stresses building in unison with time. This emulates the stress condition during static pile loading. Finally, state of the art instrumentation systems are used to obtain test data. Displacement is monitored directly using a laser datum and integrated receiver located at the centre axis of the pile. Force is also monitored directly using a calibrated load cell. Data is acquired and digitized using a 386 PC with user friendly software capable of producing load deflection curves and time histories in the field seconds after testing.

"The effects of five commercially available foaming reagents (range of 0 to 25 ppm) namely Dowfroth 250, Saponin, Yucca, Licorice and Meta-Para Cresol on acid mist control, current efficiency, polarization behavior, and deposit morphology and orientation were investigated. The deposition was carried out using a bench scale electrolysis apparatus (cell volume 3L) at 500 Nm-2 and 38°C for 3 hours from Kidd Creek zinc electrolyte. The acid mist control capability of the various reagents was studied and compared by characterizing the foam layer generated during actual electrowinning conditions and by direct quantitative measurements of acid mist levels on top of the electrowinning cells. Within the range considered, the addition of these reagents reduced the current efficiency, refined the grain size of the deposit, and changed to preferred orientation of most of the deposits. Among the reagents tested, acid mist measurements indicated that Licorice and Dowfroth 250 were the best acid mist suppressant at emissions of 0.30 mglm3 and 031 mg/m3 respectively while Yucca and MPC produced the most mist at 3.0 mg/m3 and 33 mg/m3 emission rates, respectively.IntroductionMost of the world's primary zinc is produced via a combined roast-Ieach-purificationelectrowinning process. Depending on the electrolysis conditions, several additives may be added to the electrolyte. Some (e.g. glue, antimony, sodium carbonate) are added to mainly counteract the detrimental effects caused by impurities while others (e.g. licorice, Saponin) are used as foaming reagents to prevent excessive acid mist formation. Acid mist emission is a problem in many electrolysis operations because it corrodes the equipment and is a health hazard to the workers in the tankhouse as well as it pollutes the environment. Due to recent trends towards more environmental protection and more stringent in-plant hygiene, there is an increasing need to minimize these aerosols. In order to eliminate or minimize these aerosols foaming agents are usually added to the electrolyte to produce a foam layer on top of the electrolyte, thus trapping most of the mist. The ideal foaming agent would trap all of the mist and would not interfere with the electrowinning process. It is also evident that the reagent toxicology, cost and availability are important factors that need to be considered.Review of the available literature clearly indicated that very little work has been done in the past on the subject of acid mist control in electrowinning operations particularly in the area of foaming and anti-misting properties of surfactants. Two papers [1,2] have reviewed briefly the existing technologies for acid mist control. Recently, most of the work in this area has focused on the development of special mechanical devices that could be attached to the electrodes and control the mist generation at the source before it is emitted to the cellhouse [2-5]. On the other hand, extensive body of literature exists that deals with the effects of anti-misting reagents on the electrowinning aspects [6-7]."

The 16-to-1 milling operation is Sunshine Mining Company's first new silver and gold producing facility. The 16-to-1 underground mine and mill are located approximately 64 km (40 miles) southwest of Tonopah, Nevada. Ore re- serves in the epithermal vein deposit are estimated at 0.91 Mt (one million st) of ore, at an average silver grade of 206 to 240 g/t (6 to 7 oz/st) and an average gold grade of 1.2 g/t (0.035 oz/st). The underground mine uses a large diameter blasthole stoping system of mining using highly mechanized rubber-tired equipment. The mill uses conventional cyanide leaching with countercurrent decantation and Merrill-Crowe precipitation. The mill start-up was in February 1982 resulting in the first pour of dore' in March 1982. The mill's present annual production is approximately 31.1 t (1.0 million oz) of silver and 264 kg (8500 oz) of gold.

Throughout Chile?s history, mining has consistently been a leading industry in the country. The 1990s marked the beginning of a boom in Chile?s mining industry, especially in copper mining, due to both foreign and local direct investment in the sector. Mining?s contribution to the GDP was 15.6% at current prices in 2009, and it accounts for 56% of the country?s exports. Chile?s copper market share reached 35% in 2009. The investment portfolio in mining in Chile for the coming decade has been estimated at 90 billion US dollars. The acute scarcity of human resources currently experienced by the mining sector in Chile will be accentuated in the coming decade as a result of this scenario of investments. The situation is, additionally, similar to the one confronted by other countries involved in the mining industry such as Australia, South Africa, Canada, and in Latin America includes, Peru, Colombia and Brazil. A study carried out by Fundacion Chile, ¨Labor Force in the Chile Mining Industry, Diagnostic and Recommendations, 2011-2020? shows the projected labor shortage for the operation of projects in the development stage, considering only the requirements of the process of extraction, processing, and maintenance. The demand, accumulated incrementally, will be around 115,000 technically skilled workers, professionals, and qualified workers. This figure refers to the operational work force, and does not include the human resources that will be required for the prior stage of the engineering and construction of the projects (brownfield and greenfield). The demand for technically skilled workers and professions for the stages of engineering and construction of the projects that have already received investments is estimated to be 190,000 people for the period 2012-2020. The peak of the demand for engineering is 2012, with a figure that surpasses the 12,000 professionals for all of the engineering specialties. The analysis of the formation of human resources at the tertiary level (where tertiary includes technical/vocational and academic degrees at the undergraduate level) for mining and related majors demonstrates that the programs are scarce with a bias toward theoretical contents and that they are excessively long (40% longer than comparable programs in Australia, Canada, and in OECD countries). The completion rates are low, especially in the technical-vocational programs, which have a completion rate of only around 30%. Finally, the rates of attraction of technically skilled labor and professionals towards careers in mining are insufficient to reduce the identified skill gaps. In the case of university professionals such as geologists, mining engineers and engineers in metallurgy, 80-90% will work in mining. In the case of graduates of relevant majors, that cover skills also utilized by other industries, not only mining?such as maintenance workers, operators of fixed and mobile equipment, etc.?the mining sector appears to be unattractive for reasons such as shift schedules, geographical location of work sites, and other factors. On the basis of the available diagnosis a strategy for the sector has been developed (Workforce Development and Skills Strategy) whose objective is (i) to define a Mining Qualifications Framework to identify the critical roles to be filled (ii) to start, with public resources, a ¨fast-track? training program to assure the availability of at least 28,000 operators (machinery operators, truck drivers, etc.) and maintenance specialists in 2015 (iii) to promote the development of training hubs for mining with learning technologies to train technical labor and professionals on the basis of world class standards (iv) to design and implement a campaign oriented toward the perception of mining as an attractive field of employment opportunity (v) to develop curricular innovations for tertiary education programs, on the basis of international benchmarks. Les ressources naturelles ont en général été le moteur du développement économique et social des nations. Les pays aujourd?hui développés sont pour la plupart d?anciens eldorado, charbonniers ou pétroliers. D?autres le sont toujours. L?Afrique fait cependant figure d?exception : même en étant comblé de ressources naturelles exceptionnelles, les pays de ce continent croulent sous le poids de la pauvreté et de ses acabits que sont les maladies, la famine, la guerre et l?insurrection sociale. On reconnaît néanmoins qu?il y a des cas particuliers comme le Botswana, la Namibie, l?Afrique du Sud. Face à cette situation, beaucoup de scénarii ont été proposés sans pour autant porté les fruits espérés. Le rapport Brundtland suggère que le développement durable est la clé du succès car elle veille à la prospérité économique, à l?équité dans la société et à la pérennité dans l?environnement. Pour l?Afrique, beaucoup de facteurs doivent être considérés et les solutions se doivent d?être pratiques et éthiques. Le futur ingénieur des mines qui a écrit ce rapport, apporte sa vision de la situation non sans avoir auparavant analysé les faits. Cette démarche, qui se veut avant tout éthique, inclut les aspects sociaux, économiques et politiques. Introduction In the 40s, 50s and the 60s, many economists, among which Harold Hotelling from South Carolina University, thought that developing countries could reach socio-economical success by extracting their natural resources such as oil and minerals. The current economical disaster seems to have contradicted that belief and critics like Davis Graham (Colorado School of Mines) and Michael Ross (University of California at Los Angeles) even suggested that extractive activities stop in Africa. But the experts of the World Bank (Mining Department) and some mining and oil companies are committed to reverse the tendency by implementing a new approach. Considering the principles of sustainable development defined in the Brundtland report (1987), we decided to analyze the possibility of giving the extractive industry a catalytic role in creating a socially, economically and environmentally development in Africa. In other words, can we continue to mine and extract oil in Africa for its blossoming future under the ruling of the sustainable development? In the following, we start by explaining the African socio-economic and political context. After a brief definition of the sustainable development, we explain why, for Africa, some believe in the extractive industry and some don?t. In the end, we draw out conciliatory arguments.

AT its meeting on May 21, the Board of Directors approved the recommendations submitted by President Lovejoy and named a nominating committee for the year that is especially well distributed as to major technical interest and as to geography. As may be seen from the list published herewith, two come from the East, two from the Midwest, and three from the far West. Mr. Linton, the chairman, has been a valued member of the Institute for 36 years. A memorandum drawn up by Paul D. Merica, representing the A.I.M.E., and W. R. Barclay, representing The Institute of Metals of Great Britain, setting forth a reciprocal plan for special memberships in each Institute for members of the other, was discussed. Both societies already have formally approved the plan in principle and Dr. Merica was clothed with full authority to agree on a few small details that have not been settled, and conclude the arrangement in behalf of the Institute.

The 2 Moz Vogue mineral resource is a recent discovery at the Sunrise Dam gold mine (SDGM), lying approximately 600 m vertically below the Sunrise Dam open pit. Unlike most other lodes, which are dominated either by steep vein sets or shallow high-strain (shear) zones, it lies broadly in the hinge of a folded felsic porphyry body, where it cuts intermediate volcanic lavas and volcaniclastic rocks and is not specifically concentrated at a lithofacies contact. The mineralisation is controlled by a complex interplay of moderate to shallow, west-dipping high-strain zones that are transected by irregular and discontinuous high-grade, north-west-, north–south- and east–west-trending breccia sheets that initially caused problems with attempts to model broad domains. However, by combining the structural controls and styles with the distribution of gold, arsenic, sulfur and antimony, we have improved opportunities for scheduling, extracting and processing the most appropriate material considering the current mining and processing constraints.The early delineation process for the Vogue lode revealed a significant mineral resource for the SDGM, coupled with the recognition of some potentially difficult downstream implications for mining and processing. The ultimate success of mining at Vogue will be a consequence of combining standardised data collection and geological modelling techniques with the results of the novel innovative techniques applied at an early stage of the project.Innovation (in the truest sense) drives change and application to deliver efficient and effective outcomes. Initial data generation and interpretation in lodes above Vogue provided a sound geological model based on strong structural foundations, leading to ideas that could be tested and validated by stress inversion analysis and modelling simulations. Geomechanical modelling simulations, based on the structural analysis, then provided an insight into both the structural and fluid evolution of the system and highlighted target areas. This promoted support for deeper drilling and sampling, which lead to the discovery of Vogue.With additional data, the structural model for Vogue was re-engineered through combination with geochemical and hyperspectral analysis and detailed geological and geostatistical domaining. Initial poor results from metallurgical tests from a small batch sample refocused efforts to undertake mineral and chemical characterisation and profiling (geometallurgy) and combine this data with the composite geological-structural-geochemical model. A few progressive mining software companies have recognized the benefit of broadening their capabilities to the sand and gravel (aggregate) industry. The most promising new developments have been designed for use with Surpac Vision, one of the world’s leading geological modeling, mine design, and production management systems. Surpac’s broad user-base, who have always had a propensity for customization, are now focusing on development of solutions in the Tool Command Language (Tcl), an interpreted scripting language. Surpac Software International made changes to TCL to add Surpac specific extensions, thus creating the Surpac Command Language (Scl). The Tcl interpreter, including Scl extensions, is bound into the Vision executable to provide a seamless interface to the data objects used internally by Vision, the GUI, and the 3D rendering system. Custom solutions can be incorporated as Vision extensions, or as stand alone-modules used in correlation with modeling, design, and planning functions.

With all of the unknowns associated with tunnel construction, how does a contractor choose a roadheader? This paper presents a review of several models of roadheaders being used in today?s tunnel projects. The features of different models of roadheaders are presented and compared. Roadheader size and cutter power generally determine which roadheader is best for a particular job. We will also present a model for matching features of the roadheader to the anticipated ground conditions such that the most efficient machine is selected for the project.

Titania slag is used as feedstock in the production of titanium dioxide pigment. It (titania slag) is the product of ilmenite smelting,a process whereby ilmenite is reduced at high temperature utilizing anthracite as a reducing agent. Although various slag tapping configurations are employed throughout the ilmenite smelting industry, the method of tapping the slag from the furnace into bell shaped cast steel pots, was the subject of investigation in this study. The paper describes the formulation of a cooling model used to calculate and subsequently predict the temperature profile of a slagblock during its cooling within the various cooling environments of pot cooling, air cooling and water cooling. The model was calibrated against actual internal slag temperature measurements and verified with information obtained from both pilot and industrial scale blocks. The paper concludes with solidification results and their practical implication.

This section of the Minerals Yearbook reviews the minerals industries of 29 countries: the 12 nations of the European Community (Belgium, France, the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), Italy, Greece, the Netherlands, Denmark/Greenland, Spain, Portugal, Luxembourg, The United Kingdom, and Ireland); 6 of the 7 nations of the European Free Trade Association (Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Austria, and Switzerland); Malta; the 8 Centrally Planned Economies of Eastern Europe (the German Democratic Republic (GDR), Poland, Yugoslavia, Albania, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania, and Bulgaria); and the U.S.S.R. Western Europe Western Europe [loosely defined to include the 12 nations of the European Com-munity (EC) and the 7 nations of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA)] is the single largest trading area and consumer of raw materials in the world. If Western Europe was at one time an important mining sector, it has now increasingly relegated the role of supplying minerals for its minerals processing industry to its ex-colonies in North and South America, Africa, and Australia. In this regard, Western Europe is the most important determinant of raw materials consumption (and thus, indirectly, raw materials production). There is an important reason for this since Western Europe lies somewhere between Japan at one extreme and the United States and the U.S.S.R. at the other extreme as regards the availability of natural resources.

Discussion of the Paper of Dr. Douglas, presented at the Toronto Meeting of the Institute, July, 1907 (Trans., xxxviii., 455 to 471). EDGAR HALL, Silverspur, Queensland, Australia (communication to the Secretary*) :-Dr. Douglas has written on this subject before, and his influence has had a powerful effect on the side of freedom among the younger generation of engineers. Moreover, it is not the first time that he has attributed the decline of the copper-smelting industry in Swansea to the secrecy maintained by the firms there engaged in smelting-operations. In this latter statement I think his conclusions are open to criticism. Whether the firms referred to have suffered by their secrecy is their own business-I. bold no brief for them ; but that the decline of the copper-industry at Swansea was inevitable seems to me to be proved conclusively by Dr. Douglas's own writings. In his paper on The Copper Situation,1 Dr. Douglas says "In comparing iron and copper mining, . . . it must be remembered that 2 tons of average iron ore from the most prolific source now available will make 1 ton of metal; whereas from 33 to 75 tons (say an average of 50 tons) of copper ore must be mined to produce 1 ton of copper." And further: "Last year's production of iron was made from approximately 50,000,000 tons of ore. Our copper mines, to yield a production of 900,000,000 pounds, must have handled approximately 22,000,000 tons of ore, or nearly half the quantity raised from our iron mines." Is not this the key to the whole situation ? In transporting the 50,000,000 tons of iron-ore, 25,000,000 tons of the metal iron were carried so much nearer to the market, but the transportation of 22,000,000 tons of copper-ore would have carried only 450,000 tons of the metal copper nearer to its ultimate destination. The International Seabed Authority and a number of countries have or are in the process of developing environmental impact assessment guidelines and legislation for seafloor mineral development. The formal decision to grant a project an environmental permit is based on an environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA), culminating in an environmental impact statement (EIS). The EIS needs to be supported by sufficient data upon which an assessment of impacts can be made and mitigation measures developed. Given the remote locations of many seafloor prospects, collection of sufficient environmental data to inform an EIS is often a difficult, expensive and lengthy process.

In 2017, the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) initiated the design of the Sister Grove Regional Water Resource Recovery Facility (SGRWRRF) to provide additional treatment capacity for future population growth within the Lavon Lake watershed. To provide a discharge location for SGRWRRF approximately 4.5 miles of 2.4- meter (96-inch) internal diameter pipeline will be constructed, including 2.3-kilometer (7,800) feet and 487-meter (1,600 foot) long tunnel segments. This paper will discuss the anticipated geology of the two tunnel segments, selection of the tunnel alignment, the anticipated initial tunnel support requirements and other aspects of the project design

DURING the past year, the writer has investigated the treatment of a variety of British Columbia tungsten-bearing ores. Much of the test-work described in this paper was carried out in collaboration with Mr. A. G. Lyle in association with the British Columbia War Metals Research Board at the University of British Columbia. The remainder was completed in the laboratories of the Department of Mines at Victoria. Two mills in the Province are at present treating tungsten ores. Descriptions of these are included through the co-operation of Messrs. S. Gray (1) and A. A. Almstrom (2). MINERALOGY, OCCURRENCE, AND SPECIFICATIONS In the present paper, attention is directed solely to scheclite, inasmuch as known occurrences of other tungstcn minerals in British Columbia are of mineralogical interest only. The Institute published a collective index of- Volumes I to XXXV inclusive, which has been very extensively purchased and used by the members of the Institute. It enables one to look, up any subject in the first thirty-five volumes and is useful to those who have the Transactions, as well as to those who have not, because it tells what subjects have been treated and enables one to look these matters up in his own library and then afterward either to procure the individual papers from the Institute at the price of $1 each, or to procure Volumes, or to consult the Trans-actions at a nearby library, if such a one is available. It now seems desirable to publish another collective index, and the Editorial Department, upon the authority of the Board of Directors, has prepared an index of Volumes XXXVI to LV inclusive. This will be sold in the Institute's standard half morocco binding at a price of $5 and in paper covers at a price of $4. It wilt be ready in a few weeks. Those who already have the first index and purchase the second one, and those who purchase both, will have a complete index of the Transactions from Volumes I to LV inclusive. The Institute will be glad to receive advance orders for this index to insure prompt delivery upon publication.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi implementar a célula de atendimento a prioridades dos clientes na ArcelorMittal Tubarão (Cockpit de Atendimento a Clientes), com foco na melhoria dos indicadores relacionados a entrega para clientes e visando reduzir a burocracia e barreiras organizacionais de forma a agilizar a tomada de decisão e consequentemente agilizar o fluxo dos pedidos prioritários na usina, desde a produção de aço até o despacho de produtos. O projeto foi implementado em etapas, com destaque para duas frentes, sendo uma de gestão da mudança, com a implementação do conceito de gestão por processos e em paralelo toda a implementação de infraestrutura sistêmica para suporte ao processo. Seis meses após o inicio do projeto a implementação do conceito de Gestão por Processo, de baixo custo e alto impacto no negócio trouxe uma evolução significativa nos indicadores de atendimento a cliente, com destaque para a consecução de atendimento aos pedidos prioritários que saltou de cerca de 30% para patamares acima dos 90%, assim como o lead time total de atendimento a pedidos que foi reduzido em cerca de 30%.

The fast convergence of boundary is a major problem of probability integral method, especially for the prediction of mining under thick alluvium, abandoned mine goaf, etc. To solve this problem and improve the accuracy of probability integral method, a modified model is constructed for surface movement and deformation based on theoretical analysis. In which, three weighted values i.e. 1, -1/t1, 1/t2 are set for the mining movement and deformation of three different major influence radius i.e. r1, R1, R2, respectively, then the parameters are selected as following: (1) Parameters are inversed based on the observation data, in which the subsidence factor q, deviation of inflection point s, displacement factor b are considered as generic parameters, the tangent of major influence angle tanß is modified as tanß2, that is the major influence radius r is modified as r2. (2) Inversion parameters of tangent of major influenceangle tanß or major influence radius r, based on the observation station edge data which beyond major influenc eradius distance from work-face mining boundary. The inversed tanß and r will be used as tangent of major influence angle tanß1 and major influence radius r1, respectively. (3) Other relevant parameters i.e. t1, t2, R1, R2, are calculated with the algorithm of this paper. A comparison experiment between the traditional and modified models has been conducted using the observation data from a observation station, the results show that in its central area, 58.6 percent of observation points accuracy is improved and 36.6 percent is decreased, while in its edge area, 61.5 percent is improved and 15.4 percent is decreased, totally, 68.6 percent is improved and 30 percent is decreased. This paper, which describes mining practices at a mine in the Cave- in-Rock, Illinois, fluorspar district, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. Ore deposits in the southern Illinois-western Kentucky fluorspar dis- trict are of two general types (1) the flat-bedded, lenticular replacement and (2) the relatively narrow, rather steeply dipping fault or fissure filling. This paper describes production methods used and results obtained in mining one of the bedded lenticular ore bodies that are prevalent in the northeast portion of the district near Cave-in-Rock.
