A good quality assurance program at a coal mine or power plant is accurate, timely, and consistent. The quality analysis is accurate due to a complete sampling of the coal stream loaded into the unit train. The sample analysis is accurate because standardized testing procedures are applied. Once the analysis is completed, the results must be communicated to the electric utility in a timely manner. The electric utility needs the results to better manage the coal inventory at the power plants. A quality assurance program can also help the mine deliver a consistent product to the electric utility's power plants. The importance of the three major tenants for a good quality assurance program: accuracy, timeliness and consistency, are based on major changes that are taking place in the electric utility industry.

"Chalcopyrite, a major source of copper, is commonly found associated with iron sulfides, particularly pyrite. The separation of chalcopyrite and pyrite by flotation is difficult due to the galvanic interactions between pyrite and chalcopyrite during grinding and flotation. Galvanic interactions may cause oxidation and dissolution of chalcopyrite, copper activation of pyrite and the formation of hydrophilic iron hydroxide coating. The overall effect may change the floatability of the components and lead to the misplacement of pyrite into chalcopyrite concentrate. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of lignosulfonate-based biopolymers on the depression of pyrite in the flotation of chalcopyrite with xanthate as collector and the mechanism responsible for the selective depression of pyrite. The flotation results showed that biopolymers depressed the flotation of both copper-activated pyrite and chalcopyrite in single mineral flotation although to different extents. In the flotation of mixed mineral systems, biopolymers significantly depressed pyrite flotation but had a less influence on chalcopyrite flotation. The selective depression of pyrite by biopolymers was due to the preferential adsorption of biopolymers on copper-activated pyrite surface. Galvanic interactions between pyrite and chalcopyrite surfaces promoted copper activation on pyrite. Presence of cuprous ions on pyrite surface favored biopolymer adsorption by the formation of a complex between the cuprous ions and biopolymer molecules. The same galvanic interactions also facilitated chalcopyrite oxidation leading to the formation of hydrophobic polysulfide that enhanced the hydrophobicity on chalcopyrite surface. The biopolymer structure controlled the depression effect. The results showed that the biodegradable biopolymers are promising depressants for pyrite.INTRODUCTIONCopper sulfide minerals, such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), bornite (Cu5FeS4), chalcocite (Cu2S) and covellite (CuS), are the major mineral source for copper. They are often found finely interlocked with iron sulfides, especially pyrite (FeS2) (Owusu, Brito e Abreu, Skinner, Addai-Mensah, & Zanin, 2014). Pyrite, as the most abundant sulfide mineral, is perceived as gangue in most cases and should be removed from the associated sulfides to minimize its contamination of the copper concentrate (Owusu, Addai-Mensah, Fornasiero, & Zanin, 2013; Wang & Forssberg, 1991). The commonly used strategy to remove pyrite is flotation (Wang & Forssberg, 1991)."

"There is an ever-increasing demand these days for efficient methods of removing metals from solutions especially for selectively recovering a particular metal from a mixture of metals in solution.Up until the mid l 930's the only methods widely practiced for such separations involved precipitation techniques or electrolysis. Both these methods have limitations and indeed can only be used for certain metals.It is only within the last 40 years or so when synthetic ion exchange materials became available that chemists in industry and universities have been able to apply ion exchange techniques to a wide variety of separations that not only would be impossible by precipitation methods but which are now achieved with much greater efficiency.Ion Exchange TechniquesIon exchange is a unit process that can be applied using either liquid ion exchangers or solid resin particles. Liquid ion exchange - or solvent extraction as it is often referred to - is used in a number of special areas dictated mainly by the nature of the separation.On the other hand, ion exchange resins are much more widely used and consequently a great deal more is known about their application to a variety of metal separations.In both systems there is a loss of the ion exchange material which in the case of solvent extraction results in hydrocarbons going to waste. The ion exchange resin systems lose resin in the form of small particles, referred to as ""resin fines"", and these are insoluble.The loss of liquid ion exchanger is due to the fact that it is slightly soluble in water and consequently the loss is a function of the volume of liquid with which it comes into contact and is not related to the amount of metal processed."

In 1951, Tata Steel became the pioneer in Asia by setting up its first ever washery in West Bokaro Colliery. The first beneficiation plant used to produce clean coal of 19% ash with chance cone. Feed size of chance washers were -75 mm to +6 mm. The fine coal (-6 mm) were used directly. With change in technology,in 1986,chance cones were replaced by DM cyclones and coal was washed in two circuits. In the coarse circuit -13 mm to +0.5 mm coal was washed in two stages while the fine coal of -0.5 mm was treated in froth floatation cell. With further improvement in the process the higher ash raw coal was feed to produce clean coal of 13% ash. In 1998, DSM cyclones were replaced by scrolled Evolute design cyclone which has Ep of 0.020 to 0.025 ranges resulting in increase efficiency of separation. With the increase in demand of clean coal, lower seam proportion has increased in raw coal production. The washability studies of individual seams indicated large difference in the seam characteristics in terms of washability and specific gravity cut points of the individual seams. So washing all seams together had resulted in frequent change in the character of coal and warrants frequent changes in the operating parameters of the plant in which the separating efficiency comes down and ultimately resulted in yield loss initially. With increase in knowledge and experience in coal washing the solution to this problem was achieved by adopting, seam-wise washing which is enabling process engineers by keeping set point for longer periods there by to enhance the separation efficiency. "Deep sea mining of polymetallic sulphides will change the physical and chemical conditions at the seafloor by creating scars when sulphides are removed, and potentially also by deposition of mine tailings at the seafloor. These changes will impact the existing ecosystems at the seafloor in and around the mined areas. Seafloor Massive Sulphide deposits that have been exposed to oxic seawater weather into Fe-metal-oxyhydroxides. However, the rates of weathering and release of heavy metals and other toxic compounds to the environment from freshly exposed sulphides in a deep-sea environment are not well studied.During a cruise to the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge in the Norwegian-Greenland Sea in July 2014 we will initiate in-situ experiments investigating the microbiological and geochemical processes involved in the weathering of freshly exposed massive sulphides deposits in a natural environment. This will be done by creating scars in naturally occurring sulphide deposits and by deploying weathering experiments at the seafloor. The sites will be revisited and re-sampled in 2015. The mobility and fate of heavy metals will be one of the main concerns of the study as well as constraining the time it will take for exposed sulphides to return to the chemical state present prior to mining. In this presentation we will present the experimental framework and the preliminary results from the July 2014 cruise. This project is part of the EU funded MIDAS (Managing impacts of deep sea resource exploitation) project."

STORAGE of natural gas in underground reservoirs is one of the most important developments in the natural gas industry in recent years. However, it is only when we consider this development together with proved fuel reserves, the know-how of the fuel technologist, and the possibility of making manufactured gas available over large areas, that we begin to appreciate fully the impact that underground storage of gas may have on the future growth and development of large areas in the United States. During the past winter, shortages of natural gas in the industrial East were given wide publicity and domestic consumers were requested to reduce their requirements to a minimum, so that war plants might have sufficient gas to continue operations. Curtailments would have been more drastic except for the fact that large volumes of natural gas had previously been stored in underground reservoirs. Storage of natural gas in depleted or partly depleted gas or oil sands is not new, having originally been tried, as far as I know, about 1915. About five or ten years later an attempt was made to store manufactured gas in a depleted gas sand. This proved unsuccessful at first because the gas was not properly cleaned and the impurities plugged the pores in the sand.

A pilot scale AG milling campaign was conducted at the AngloAmerican Platinum pilot plant in South Africa. Different blends of hard:soft (silicate:chromite) and coarse:fine particles in the AG mill fresh feed were tested. The effects of multi-component feed on the pilot scale autogenous grinding are presented in this paper, and can be used as a guideline for multi-component feed blends for AG milling. Preliminary modelling and simulation for the multi-component AG mill model are also included.

Recently the operating philosophy at concentrators processing platinum bearing ores has started to move from a recovery dominated system to one in which the production of high grade concentrates at the expense of some recovery would provide greater benefits in the further upgrading of the platinum group minerals (PGM). The low grades usually obtained are associated with the presence of naturally floatable talcaceous gangue minerals in all PGM ores. Polysaccharide depressants such as guar gum and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) are used to improve the grades of the concentrates. Recent testwork has shown that the use of high depressant concentrations can prevent any naturally floatable gangue from reporting to the concentrate. The only gangue present in the concentrates would be due to its entrainment in the froth. Under these conditions much higher grades can be achieved. The sulphide minerals themselves, however, become susceptible to depression at high depressant concentrations. This work examines how the recovery of sulphide minerals in two Merensky ores was affected by the type and concentration of the collector in the presence of high depressant concentration (500 g/t) and that the response of the sulphide minerals was also dependent on the type of depressant used (guar or CMC).

Currently mineral resources evaluation is firstly expressed in terms of volume. Next the resources are transformed into tonnes by using an average bulk density applied to the whole deposit or, in some other circumstances, various different densities to distinct geological domains. Previous work in uranium, copper and nickel deposits used linear correlation between grades and bulk density to derive the density. Geophysics methods are also another good way to obtain density indirectly.These approaches do not take into account that two samples with the same grade but with different bulk densities can characterise different sample supports, leading to severe bias in grade and tonne estimates. It is important that the systematic measurements of bulk density are included into the estimation process, particularly when density is not correlated with the grades. Additionally, the extra time and costs involved in obtaining the bulk density data have made the mining industry disregard it.This study reports the impact in resource estimates by using a methodology that includes the bulk density variability. It involves the determination of a variability model for the bulk density and another model for the composite that was weighted by density as well as by its length. Next, these variables are estimated by kriging and the final grade estimates are obtained. The tonnages are obtained with the bulk density estimates. The conventional methodology was also applied and both estimates are compared to the reconciliation data from a major copper deposit. The results show a significant difference between the tonnage and grade estimates obtained from these two methodologies.The results show that considering density variability when compositing leads to a more accurate methodology resulting in better grade and tonnage estimates locally and globally.

The iron production has generated many tonnes of very fine residues with high concentration of iron. In addition, during the recycling of galvanised steel scrap in the steel making processes the zinc and lead are largely concentrated in the dust. These kinds of dusts are usually dumped beside the metallurgical plants and cause environmental problems. Therefore the metal recovery from the metallurgical residues has become a major interest not only from the viewpoint of metals recycling but mainly from the viewpoint of environmental land protection. The thermodynamic analyses and laboratory experiments suggested that the metals could be recovered from metallurgical wastes by reduction roasting and by plasma smelting processes. The iron rich pellets with very high metallization may be obtained from metallurgical wastes by the reduction roasting and the inert slag and pig iron could be produced by plasma smelting processes. In both cases the iron rich products are suitable for the steel production. During the reduction roasting or plasma smelting the high volatile zinc and lead metals were removed and enriched as a secondary dust, Zn-Pb concentrate, which is suitable for processing in zinc and lead smelters. Suggested processes are commercially feasible and environmentally friendly without any solid or liquid waste.

Belt conveyor transfers are the most likely location for high wear rates and failures. Belt transfers are necessary to change the direction of conveyed material and will remain a part of belt conveyor systems into the future. Burden being accelerated due to fall and changes in direction from one system to the next, prevents steady state flow which introduces component fatigue. The conveyor belt is considered the greatest cost item over the life of a belt conveyor system and consumes considerable downtime to replace, therefore a financial incentive exists to preserve this high-cost item. Other issues created at the transfer include health risks of uncontained dust and product losses due to spillage. Additional consideration to support the belt is one way to improve the life of components and contain dust within the transfer chute. The humble impact cradle/bed has changed little over the years whilst conveyor systems have achieved ever greater flow rates. Further development of the impact cradle is an opportunity to reduce maintenance costs and increase uptime. The peak technology on the market for conventional impact belt support is the dynamic impact cradle, which ensures the belt support area under the chute allows for some dynamic travel, whilst also maintaining a consistent skirt board area. The impact energy at a transfer when installed with Kinder Australia’s dynamic impact belt support system was measured to further understand the forces involved and how they compare with static belt support systems. Adding further dynamic capacity to the load zone has been shown to increase belt life by at least 30 per cent. Other components also benefit from reducing impact energy in the transfer and the incorporation of polyurethane bushes at roller supports has been employed further increase roller and frame life. Kinder Australia has developed a unique and innovative range of belt support technologies that further promote dynamic travel whilst maintaining a consistent skirt board area without a significant increase in belt-friction tension. The investigation described in this publication was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the effectiveness of the anionic silica flotation method on goethitic iron-bearing materials from the Cuyuna Range, Minn. Samples used in this investigation were a composite of drill core from 13 holes, and 3 samples from lean ore stockpiles. These samples are believed to be typical of the mineralization occurring in an area with a potential reserve of several million tans of submarginal iron ore. Results from batch tests showed that the iron-bearing minerals could be effectively concentrated by flotation removal of the siliceous gangue. The drill hole composite yielded laboratory flotation concentrates from locked tests containing 56.8 percent Fe and 6.1 percent silica, with an accompanying iron unit recovery of 94.2 percent. Concentrates containing 52.4 to 53.7 percent Fe also were produced from the lean ore stockpile materials; corresponging iron recoveries ranged from 71 to 79 percent in the batch tests, with the possibility remaining for additional recovery of iron from the middlings.

Mineral processing plants typically procure a range of industrial services from contractors. Their satisfaction and value received is directly affected by how the services are procured, rationalized and delivered. Conventional purchasing strategies often focus on price rather than on optimizing the service relationship between supplier and customer. The nature of this relationship may have the greatest potential to reduce costs and enhance production. It has been documented that a service involves simultaneous production and consumption. A high degree of customer involvement is often necessary for a successful outcome and the expectations and attitudes of the customer can positively or negatively affect delivery of the service. This indicates that the customer can enhance or diminish their own satisfaction and value received and the supplier cannot act alone for best results. The Optimax? Program for industrial services is a service delivery framework whereby a customer and supplier work together to raise the efficiency of the service exchange. The Optimax? Program is intended to help the customer optimize costs and maximize production by connecting the customer and supplier through shared information and objectives. This paper will review the basic nature of services, provide a couple of examples of conventional procurement strategies for services and outline the features of the Optimax? Program. A Case Study showing recent results from implementing the Optimax? Program will be included.

The Mid-Tennessee Zinc (MTZ) mines, comprised of the Gordonsville, Elmwood, and Cumberland sites, last operated 4 years ago and are undergoing rehabilitation to begin production in 2008. The mines utilize a random room-and-pillar mining method that results in complex ventilation networks. Upon decommissioning, the mechanical ventilation units were removed and disposed of and several shafts sealed. In an effort to re-open the mines and operate in compliance with imminent Mine Safety Health and Administration (MSHA) diesel particulate matter (DPM) regulatory limits of 160TC µg/m3, a new ventilation system was required. The new ventilation system was developed primarily based on the diesel equipment required to meet production. Particular emphasis was placed on the DPM, diesel equipment utilization, main fan sizing, and fan locations to enable the mines to meet MSHA?s ventilation requirements in a cost efficient manner.

The pile inspector is a critical element in the quality control process necessary for a successful pile installation project. This guide is intended to provide the inspector with a basic understanding of only one of the many components of this process - the pile driving hammer. Pile driving hammers are used to install both bearing piles for structure foundations and sheet piles (and soldier piles) as used in retaining structures. In a single document, this guide offers a general presentation of the operation of the more common types of hammers the inspector is likely to encounter. It should make the information in the contractor's hammer submittal for the project more understandable. It should also provide an appreciation for the importance of a properly operating pile hammer. Prior to the start of most pile driving operations, the contractor will normally furnish a submittal to the engineer giving the specific pile driving equipment that he intends to use on the job. This submittal should include the make, model, and type of the intended pile driving hammer or hammers and their operating characteristics such as ram weight, rated energy, operating speed, external power requirements and, other pertinent information. Frequently, the operating characteristics are provided in the form of the manufacturer's specification sheet. The engineer will review this information and when he is satisfied, approve it and pass it on to the inspector. The driving criteria will have been determined by the engineer or others (the geotechnical engineer, consulting engineer, contractor, etc.) from the results of static analysis (for minimum penetration), driving during a test pile installation, Wave Equation analysis, dynamic formula, pile instrumentation during driving, static load test, or a combination of these or other appropriate analyses. The driving criteria can be a minimum penetration of driven pile length (embedded length), or a minimum (or maximum) blow count per unit of penetration. The pile inspector should become familiar with this information prior to the start of the job and should understand or seek help to comprehend the terminology and intent of each specification.

This paper describes operations of the Chief Consolidated Mining Co. at the Chief mine in the Tintic district, Juab County, Utah, where the outstanding problem is water control; the unique pumping methods employed are featured in this report. The ore bodies in this district occur as long, narrow shoots along fault fissures, usually in the Bluebell dolomite of Ordovician age. Oxide ores predominate above the 1800 level, which is also the natural water level. Sulfide ores containing lead, zinc, silver, and gold extend below the 1800 level. The mine is developed by vertical shafts and winzes, from which drifts are driven to the ore bodies. In the lower levels of the mine these drifts extend long distances from the shafts or winzes because of the relatively low dip of the ore shoots. The mine has been worked to the 2800 level and the 18-411 winze extends to the 3080 level.
