Often plant performance suffers as a result of poor control. Poor control leads to low mill throughputs, poor classification and less than satisfactory concentrate grades and overall recoveries. By using the appropriate control tools, substantial gains in plant performance can be made. Mintek?s MillStar and FloatStar controllers have been implemented at various sites across the world. The MillStar controller incorporates leading technology that controls process units from the mill feed through to the flotation feed. Typical results show that milling circuit throughput is increased by 6-10 % and the final product grind size is tightly controlled, thereby enhancing flotation performance. The FloatStar controller is aimed at stabilising and optimising flotation circuits. Through improved level control alone, recovery improvements of up to 1 % have been achieved. Furthermore, by using on-line grade analysers, the controller stabilises final concentrate grades, whilst maximising flotation recovery.

The paper presents background information including data on diesel exhaust pollutants, amounts produced and standards, a desscription of mine characteristics that affect air monitoring techniques and a review of portable measurement techniques and instruments for gas and particulate matter sampling. A general review of the laboratory and field research being conducted at Michigan Technological University in the area of diesel emissions is presented. The facilities involved with this research are also described. These are the Experimental Mine, the diesel dilution tunnel test cell, the Mine Air Monitoring Lab (MAML), the portable instruments and the production mines used.

From observations of the linear displacement of oil by water from a porous medium as visualized in transparent models, new insight into the mechanism of vircous fingering, as occurring in the case of unfavorable oil-water viscosity ratios, has been obtained. A mathematical description of the observed phenomena leads to formulas. expressing both oil production and pressure drop across the formation as a func-tion of cumulative water injection with the oil-water viscosity ratio as a parameter. Theoretical results are compared with those obtained from scaled laboratory experiments in sand-filled rubes in which water was injected at the one end and production was obtained from the other end. In the second part of the paper the same principles are used to calculate a more realistic production scheme in which production of oil and water is obtained from wells regularly distributed over the field. Results show satisfactory agreement with production data of an actual oil field. Application of the theory is extremely simple as only a limited number of readily available parameters have to be known and results are presented in an analytical form. INTRODUCTION When oil is displaced from a porous medium by water having a viscosity lower than the oil. the oil-water interface is essentially unstable and has the tendency to break up into what are called "fingers" or "streamers". This Viscous fingering has been noted before by Engelberts and Klinkenberg' and has recently been demonstrated in transparent models by van Meurs-. It is highly questionable whether it is at all possible to perform relative permeability measurements In the laboratory reproducing the same distribution of water and oil in the cores as Present in practice. Therefore, we based our descriptive theory on an idealized model which was "tailored" to the fingering mechanism as observed in transparent models under scaled conditions. This approach was the more attractive, as a highly simplified model had already yielded an adequate description of the process. Though we are aware our theoretical approach can be extended in several ways, it is given here in its simplest form to explain the fundamental principles and to avoid complicated formulas. SIMPLEST CASE OF A LINEAR DRIVE Observations and Theoretical Model In Fig. 1 a series of photographs shows how water penetrates into a formation saturated with an oil which is considerably more viscous than the water. The technique for obtaining these photographs, using transparent models, has already been described?. The fingers can be clearly observed and are seen to be mainly parallel to the flow direction. Note that the contours of these fingers are not smooth but show protrusions of water enclosing oil pockets.

Approximately 30 million pounds of tungsten trioxide in the form of ferberite concentrates have been shipped from Boulder County. Since 1940, the production has varied considerably, being affected by the emergency needs of World War II and the Korean conflict. During World War II, attempts to stimulate production were made by the Metals Reserve Company by stabilizing the price for a specified period, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation by small mining development loans, and the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey, who cooperatively explored some of the district by surface and underground core drilling. During the Korean conflict and continuing through the first half of 1954) tungsten production was being stimulated by a Government-gauranteed price and by financial assistance loans under the Defense Production Act of 1950 to qualified operators of properties that have merited exploration. This combined program has increased production in Boulder County from about 1,900 pounds in 1949 to an estimated 383,000 pounds of tungsten trioxide in 1953. The 1953 production came from 67 properties. One of the problems confronting producers is the need for improved beneficiaton methods. Ores from the area have not been amenable to flotation concentration and gravity methods have resulted in poor recovery, often less than 70 percent.

"This paper describes several applications of Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) in gassolid two phase flows. A new image reconstruction algorithm was evaluated by both simulation and experiments. It is then applied to the online measurement of solids distributions in square circulating fluidized beds (CFBs) and good results were obtained. From the measurement of solids distributions in the bottom zone of a CFB, a bubbly fluidization pattern is identified. A cross-correlation technique was combined with the solids concentration measurements to obtain the flow rate through the dip leg of the cyclone, i.e. the circulating rate of a test CFB. The same· technique was applied in a dense phase pneumatic transport pipe provides the solids concentration, and the flow rate of a wavy gas-solids flow.IntroductionElectrical capacitance tomography (ECT) has been developed for imaging multiphase distributions in the 90's of the ·last century. It is a non-intrusive method. The principle of ECT can be firefly described as follows:Firstly ECT uses a number of electrodes to surround the measuring zone, depicted by Fig. I. The capacitances between the electrodes are measured in turn and an array C is obtained that contains a total number of m independently measured capacitances. Meanwhile the measuring zone is virtually divided into a grid of n pixels, represented by an array G, named the image vector, the gray level of each pixel represents the local value of the concentration of the material. As the material distribution will be reflected by the capacitances between each pair of electrodes, such distributions can be reconstructed according to the measured capacitance, a process called image reconstruction. Most of the reported coal spontaneous combustion events occur in surface and underground mines where low rank coals (i.e., subbituminous and lower for this particular studies) are extracted indicating their high propensities for spontaneous combustion. Low rank coals have high moisture content (15 to 45%) and are capable of absorbing more moisture in dried condition. However, it is hard to induce the initial stage of self-heating process for the low rank coal using the current laboratory R70 testing method — a method widely used in the coal industry. Like a sponge, dry low rank coals can absorb water vapor in the air while the heat contained in the moist air is transferred to coal and served as the required activation energy to initiate the coal self-heating process. In order to prove this theorem and quantify the effects, the R70 adiabatic oxidation testing method has been improved to introduce a controlled moist flow into the coal reaction vessel. Tests using the new method and its setup on low rank coals showed that the initial self-heating process of coal sample can be greatly accelerated by the added water vapor — impossible with the regular R70 method. Once the self-heating is sustained, the removal of air moisture can further accelerate the process.

When it comes to safety in the mining and extractive industries, success is literally a matter of life and death. Anything short of perfection is not acceptable. In recent years, the mining industry in the United States has made tremendous strides in terms of health and safety for its workers. Part of that success has come with an increased focus on the issues of safety, an intense examination of procedures, liberal sharing of best practices and a focus on the synergy between safety, reliability and environment. During his closing keynote address of the Safety Management & System Reliability Conference in Minneapolis, MN on Nov. 15, Joe Driscoll, vice president of Great Basin Gold, showed a calendar from the coal fields in Pennsylvania from the early 1900s. The calendar marked the number of mine-related deaths each month. Some months, the number was as high as 50. It was an illustration of how far things have come, but there is still much more work to be done.

Wood cribs are used extensively by the mining industry to stabilize mine openings. While the cost per crib is relatively low, their extensive use can result in annual mine costs of over $1 million. In an effort to improve the utilization of these supports and to reduce ground control hazards, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed engineering methods to assist mine operators in wood-crib design and employment. Design and employment criteria are established based on the strength, stiffness, and stability of the crib structure in relation to the load conditions imposed by the mine environment. Models have been developed based on full-scale tests in the USBM's Mine Roof Simulator that compute the capacity of wood cribs of various configurations and material constructions as a function of displacement of the crib structure due to roof-and-floor convergence. These models permit the comparison of the loading characteristics and costs of employment of different crib designs, and in conjunction with roof behavior models, provide a means to determine the optimum design and employment strategy.

The mining industry in Colorado faces the same problems the industry faces throughout the United States and the world — record low commodity prices and increasing regulatory and environmental restrictions that seemed designed to curtail mining activities. Despite those obstacles, the mining industry in Colorado still contributes about $8 billion annually to the state’s economy in the form of base and precious metals, industrial minerals, coal and associated service businesses and jobs. So the 300 attendees at the102nd National Western Mining Conference felt reason-ably positive about the industry in their state. The meeting is the Colorado Mining Association’s annual conference and was held at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs in November. The theme was “Mining in the New Millennium — Achievement + Innovation = Survival.” Experts from Colorado’s mining industry and abroad discussed the challenges faced by the mining industry as it enters the new millennium. They offered insights into how the industry will operate during the early years of the 21st century and how it will survive low prices and increased regulatory restrictions.

Froth flotation is applied to mineral sand concentrates in order to produce commercially viable xenotime concentrates. Experiments indicate that a xenotime product containing 38% Y2O3 at 47% recovery or 34% Y2O3 at 83% recovery can be obtained from a 27% Y2O3 feed. The process involves a primary stage of reverse flotation at which oxide and silicate gangue is floated, and secondary stage of direct flotation at which xenotime is floated. Of the various collectors screened an amphoteric compound was found to be effective at both stages. This was made possible by the addition of sodium silicate at the second stage, which acted as depressant for the remainder of the gangue. Similar studies on a low grade feed material were somewhat unsatisfactory as the grade achieved fell short of what was targeted.

In answer to inquiries from members, Mr. Sheafer said that the culm-banks of which his paper gave the shipments were of about the average quality of the banks in the Mahanoy region of the Schuylkill field,.made prior to 1881 or 1882, when the practice of preparing buckwheat coal was introduced; but that in a very old hank, made about 1849, no coal above pea-size had been found. Apparently it was then the practice to ship everything. In reply to an inquiry concerning the utilization of the fine coaldust, Mr. Sheafer said that it was not utilized in connection with the washing described in his paper, but was carried away in the water as waste; that during Mr. Corbin's presidency the Reading Company built at Mahanoy City an extensive plant for making artificial fuel, but difficulty was encountered, due to the circumstance that the small coal from different collieries varied in its combustible quality and also in the amount of pitch required to be mixed with it, and he believed they concluded that from some varieties of the coal-dust a very good fuel could be made, but at a cost entirely too great for successful competition with cheap coal. Of course, the anthracite dust was not so well suited to this manufacture as bituminous slack. R. W. Raymond, New York City : I believe that was the practical outcome of the enterprise of a member of the Institute, Mr. E. F. Loiseau, now deceased. It was found, I think, as an additional drawback, that the manufacture of artificial compressed fuel from anthracite dust could not be successfully practiced with material so impure as that of the culm-banks. Consequently, the manufacture could be based on that source of supply only when accompanied with a preparatory washing. The most favorable location for it would be at large yards where the waste from the handling of coal, which is comparatively pure material, could be thus treated. I believe the manufacture of compressed fuel from bituminous coal was at one time a profitable business in Nova Scotia, but was destroyed by the indirect effect of the general introduction of watergas for illuminating purposes. The Owner Procurement Process or OPP is a proven, viable alternative contract delivery method that is potentially applicable to many tunnel projects. Using the OPP, the owner specifies and procures major tunnel construction items such as tunnel boring machines and tunnel linings and provides them to a tunnel excavation contractor in order to manage risk and accelerate project schedule. However, due to industry perceptions regarding potential owner risk, it is seldom considered or is rejected out of hand. In fact, past performance demonstrates that the process significantly minimizes owner, contractor and over-all project risk and mitigates the impact of any claims and differing site conditions. The paper outlines how the process should be structured to achieve schedule, cost, quality and risk management benefits. Potential and perceived disadvantages are discussed and how the process can be structured to mitigate or avoid them. The planned implementation of this process on the tunnels for the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Project in San Jose, California is discussed.

Asbestos is a broad term embracing a number of fibrous silicate minerals. These minerals look extremely fragile, yet their fibers have a tensile strength equal to that of piano wire. Chrysotile asbestos is the only mineral that can be woven into cloth, and its fibrous structure is, if anything, even more amazing than its remarkable ability to withstand heat. Because of its unique physical properties asbestos has achieved great industrial importance, and more than 3,000 current uses are known, ranging from use in the kitchen to use in space missiles. Because their minuscule fibers are eminently respirable, asbestos minerals have also found their way into the lungs of humans, where they apparently produce serious biological effects such as asbestosis and lung cancers. 1, 2,3 Because of both their usefulness and their hazardous properties, these minerals have attracted a good deal of attention from research workers during recent years. For example, the surface properties of asbestos minerals have been studied by many investigators. 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 However, even for the important mineral chrysotile, the literature data are more or less conflicting. Pundsack4 measured a PZC (point of zero charge) of 10.1; Martinez and Zucker5 measured 11.8; Chwastiak reports 10.8-11.0; and Raddick measured three sepa-rate apparent PZCls at about pH 8.3, 10.0 and 10.9. More recently Trivedi8 reports 10.11. Naumann and Dresher9 have studied surface charge enhancement of chrysotile by metal ions, and describe how the mineral reacts with contaminantions. In the present paper, the mode of dissolution of magnesium and hydroxyl ion from asbestos minerals placed in water was studied by kinetic experiments involving rate at which these items leave the minerals. Also, some study was made of interaction between dissolved species.

Economics, Resources, Environment and Technology are the major driving forces in the base metals industry. However, these factors are intertwined and together will propel the industry in the future. The demand for metals has grown with economic expansion, between 2 to 4 % p.a. The current growth cycle has been driven by economic expansion in China where the demand for base metals has risen from - 7 % of the world demand in the 90's to - 25 % of world demand today, and rising. Base metals are commodities and their demand and price are cyclical. Historically metal prices have declined in constant dollars, forcing the industry to reduce costs, increase productivity and increase the scale of operation for economies of scale. Due to resource depletion and capacity expansion the industry is driven to expand its reserve and resource base. However, in the case of sulphide deposits of copper and nickel it appears to be a losing battle. For nickel the laterites represent a vast source at this time. Their development requires development of new technologies to make these resources economic. Emission reduction is being increasingly mandated in most jurisdictions with all governments enacting progressively more stringent regulations. The industry has been responding with technological innovation. With the Kyoto protocol there is a push to reduce energy intensity in metal production. Technological innovation is driven by all the other factors and is leading to novel ways of doing exploration, mining and processing, that would maximize resource delineation and utilization, reduce costs, increase productivity, reduce energy consumption, maximize asset utilization and reduce environmental affects. Development of alternative technologies such as Pressure Acid Leach of laterite for nickel, bio-leaching, heap leaching, SX-EW etc are being adopted to achieve the aims of the industry.

The New York Trap Rock Corporation has four plants located along the Hudson River, all within 70 miles of New York City. The company produces crushed stone for use as construction aggregate, with a total annual production amounting to 6 million tons. The crushed stone is moved to markets in metropolitan New York, New Jersey and Long island areas by water transportation. There are daily deliveries of approximately 35 scowloads to the market area. Its customers are contractors with ready-mixed concrete and asphalt plants located on the water, where the aggregate is unloaded for its ultimate use. For a number of years capital equipment was replaced only when the current operating machinery was no longer serviceable, or when' a need was apparent for a different type of equipment. There was no particular regard for efficiency or for operating and maintenance costs. Such lack of system often resulted in the emergency purchase of equipment which was later found to be unsuitable for the job. A few years ago it became apparent that a systematic procedure was necessary. After evaluation of several systems, an individualized plan was evolved from the basic pattern developed by the Machinery and Allied Products Institute. The system adopted by New York Trap Rock has proved wholly satisfactory.

Different methods of utilizing refractory bauxite and disposing red mud are practiced throughout the world, but none of them are known to be environmentally innocuous due to the complexity and /or high cost, and none has been found to be feasible on an industrial scale. Under these conditions, the use of bioleaching process seems promising. The present study emphasizes on the isolation of native extremophiles from the source Indian bauxite and red mud, with their detailed cellular and physio-chemical, and biochemical characterization. These organisms were tested for their ability to thrive in physically or geochemically extreme conditions. The gram positive capsule rich mesophiles and thermophiles were tested for removal of gangue minerals from the bauxite and red mud samples. Frozen coal creates severe handling problems. Utilities require uninterrupted supplies of coal to meet their increasing coal consumption rates. Difficulties incurred due to frozen coal result in more costly downtime for the utilities. Air cannons, vibratory hammers and thaw sheds are examples of mechanical devices used to break, crack or thaw frozen coal. Recently chemical treatments have been developed as preventive measures. The freezing of coal depends upon a number of factors, of which one of the most significant is surface moisture. The more there is, the larger the frozen coal problem. Slide 1 depicts a graph of frozen coal compressive strength as a function of surface moisture. Below a certain minimum value the coal will not freeze. Above this point, compressive strength is essentially a linear function of moisture over the range practically encountered. By surface moisture is meant the free moisture on coal having a normal vapor pressure as opposed to capillary moisture or inherent moisture. In addition to the straightforward freezing of coal surface moisture binding particulates together, frost formation occurs due to temperature gradients which develop in rail-cars and stockpiles .

The abstract highlights the challenges in concentrating complex and non-sulfide lead-zinc ores and emphasizes the importance of froth flotation for their beneficiation. The study focuses on using process mineralogy to understand the flotation behavior of these ores from the Görgü region. The ore samples were characterized using various techniques, revealing oxidation and carbonation of primary minerals. The flotation results were interpreted in light of the mineralogical data, explaining the poor outcomes due to the complex nature of the ore, poor liberation, and lack of hydrophobicity.

Rock-dusting of coal mines is a most important safety measure for preventing or limiting the propagation of explosions. The Bureau of Mines has recommended for many years that rock dust be distributed on the top, ribs, and floor of mine entries and other workings of all bituminous coal and lignite mines in sufficient quantities to maintain the incombustible content of the dust above the minimum requirements. Rock-dust barriers constitute a secondary safeguard used occasionally to complement generalized rock dusting at entrances to panels and side entries or at other locations. In general, rock dust can be applied effectively with modern rock-dusting machines. However, in thin coal beds, in certain back entries, and in some other areas, rock-dusting machines cannot be used conveniently. Furthermore, many small mines find the purchase of machines costly. In such cases, rock dust is not used at all, or else it is distributed by hand, a relatively slow and costly procedure. In recent years some coal mines have started applying rock dust with the aid of permissible explosives. This may be done in various ways. One method consists in placing a stick of explosive on the floor of a room or entry midway between the ribs and covering the stick with two bags of rock dust that are slit on top and set crosswise one above the other. The explosive is then fired, causing the rock dust to be distributed on the nearby roof, rib, and floor surfaces. The procedure is repeated at desired intervals until the entire area is rock dusted. The method is claimed to be rapid, safe, and inexpensive.
