A good deposit of high sulphur coals of tertiary origin is existent in North eastern region of India. These coals are known to have indifferent characteristics in comparison to other Indian coals. The general Physico-chemical characteristics are low ash and high volatile matter, calorific value and sulphur content. Sulphur in these coals (70-95% of organic) is mostly affixed to the structure of the coal. Owing to the stringent environmental regulations, the utilization of these coals has severe limitations due to high sulphur content. In the present investigation, sulphur incorporation in to these coals has been discussed along with possible organic sulphur functionalities. The various desulphurization techniques carried out for removing sulphur from these coals have been discussed. Two step oxidative desulphurization processes has been found to be most efficient for organic sulphur removal along with mineral matter and potential toxic elements. The Bureau of Mines has recently completed a comprehensive study of coal strength. More than 4000 individual test results from over 60 seams were extracted from the literature and combined in the most complete data base of the uniaxial compressive strength of coal ever assembled. In addition, more than 100 case studies of in-mine pillar performance were available in the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) data base. Statistical analysis of this wealth of data has yielded valuable results. The data shows clearly that the "size effect" is related to coal structure. The widely-used Gaddy formula, which predicts a significant strength reduction as the specimen size is increased, was found to apply only to "blocky" coals. For friable coals, the size effect was much less pronounced or even non-existent. Case histories of failed pillars are the best available data on in situ coal strength. This study found no correlation between the ARMPS stability factor of failed pillars and coal specimen strength. Pillar design was much more reliable when a uniform coal strength was used in all case histories.

As trucks become larger and larger, haul roads take on a more significant role in mining costs and economics. The School of Mining at the University of Alberta has compiled a design manual for haul roads using both empirical and theoretical information. One section of this manual deals with the economics of haul road construction. While many mines look only at the construction costs of haul roads, this paper looks at all associated parameters including construction costs, removal costs, timing, truck productivity and width implications. The authors demonstrate the method to determine the most appropriate quality of road for different road conditions and life spans.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report summarizes common obstacles found when attempting to implement health and safety strategies in small mines and small businesses in general industry. Recently, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration focused much of its attention on addressing health and safety issues at small mines. Some of the more innovative interventions practiced by small businesses in general industry are discussed for consideration of their applicability to the mining industry. The most effective intervention strategy that was developed for small businesses is the Occupational Safety and Health Administration Consultative Program. The details of this program and other intervention strategies used by small mines and small businesses are presented.

High-grade ore found in a shaft pillar at the Homestake Mine prompted a request for a Bureau of Mines study to determine if selected areas of the shaft pillar could be mined without jeopardizing the shaft. The design approach was to perform a finite-element study of the shaft pillar. Plan view and vertical sections were developed using two-dimensional, elastic, plane strain assumptions. Input into the model consisted of in situ stress measurements geologic mapping rock mass properties, and previous mining history. Results from the study indicated that ore-beating sections of the shaft pillar could be removed within the displacement tolerances acceptable for the shaft. Homestake engineers, using the results of the finite-element study and considering other factors, have designed and are beginning to mine the shaft pillar.

Since early-2001, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) has successfully operated an ultra fine grinding (UFG) circuit to supplement its roaster capacity for the treatment of the refractory gold flotation concentrate. A second UFG mill was installed in 2002 taking the total UFG capacity to over 20 tph while grinding to 11 to 12 microns and achieving over 90 per cent gold recovery. A development program in 2002/3 involving plant trials, pilot plants and laboratory testwork resulted in process improvements and a better understanding of the milling and gold leach processes that assisted in narrowing the gap between UFG and roasting. This paper details the operation of the ultra fine grinding process at KCGM as a non oxidative treatment for the extraction of gold from a refractory ores.

The Wolf Creek Upper Narrows Tunnel (Upper Narrows Tunnel) is one of the first major highway tunnel in the United States implementing the use of spray-on membrane for purposes of constructing a double-shell drainage solution between an initial shotcrete lining and a final cast-in-place concrete lining (Figure 1). In the case of the Upper Narrows Tunnel the primary membrane is constructed with a spray-on product manufactured by Degussa, namely Masterseal® 340 FA (MS 340) that has been utilized previously in other tunnel projects. Shotcrete-like in application, but differing in physical properties, MS 340 is now outdated, and is succeeded by Masterseal® 345 (MS 345), a nearly identical product, with improvements in material properties. Tunnel project histories utilizing either MS 340 or MS 345 are discussed and summarized with regard to the respective motives for prompting spray-on membrane selection and the realized benefits resulting from spray-on membrane construction. With an emphasis on the Upper Narrows Tunnel, project summaries discuss details of the aspects of design for spray-on membrane construction methodology as opposed to conventional sheet membrane construction methodologies. It is anticipated that experience gained during the construction of the Upper Narrows Tunnel with respect to other tunnel projects that have utilized spray-on membrane will be of use for future tunnels employing spray-on membrane in drainage solutions.

The following minerals found in the residual black sands from gold mining in El Bagre Antioquia (Colombia) were identified as having major economic interest: Ilmenite (FeTiO3), with an average of 49% of TiO2, frequently altered presenting crowns; lamellaes of rutile and alteration textures; titanomagnetite with up to 25% of TiO2; magnetite (Fe3O4) in individual grains or associated with others minerals as hematite and ferromagnesian silicates rutile (TiO2) with considerable quantities of Nb2O5(0.1-3.7%Wt); zircon (ZrSiO4) with 66%Wt of ZrO2 and monazite with an average of 63.43%Wt of REE, this frequently associated to xenotime and thorite forming textures as little drops. Analysis in EPMA and SEM/EDS showed percentages of minor elements and traces, thereby clearly establishing the applications of these minerals in diverse industries. Furthermore, a detailed granumetric study of the different minerals and textural relationships among them also allowed for establishing the basis for possible processing and exploitation.

At the International Society ofExplosives Engineers Annual Conference held in Nashville, Tennessee in February 1995, a Seismograph Standards Committee was established. The purpose of this wmmittee was to develop objective performance specifications for vibration measurement instrumentation and field use practices. It was also understood that due to geology, temperature, and moisture in the soils, it is not possible to design and build an instrument to give ‘results which are absolutely comparable for ground vibration. It was, however, considered essential to standardize instrumentation by which vibration can be measured under closely defined conditions so that results obtained by users of seismographs are always the same ,&thin stated tolerances.

The use of mining tailings-based geopolymer binder as a substitute for cement can be an interesting alternative to the problem of final disposing of large volumes of them. Indeed, mining tailings have a high silica content, which makes them suitable for geopolymerization. The tailings samples contain Cu, Pb, Zn, As, Sb, Cd and Bi, mainly. X-ray diffraction results show that the tailings are composed of quartz, SiO2 (81%). Geopolymerized tailing samples (GTPS) were obtained by varying the ratio of SiO2/ Al2O3 and SiO2/NaOH. The compressive strength of the GTPS varied between 2 MPa and 8 MPa. The electrical conductivity in the leaching tests varies between 13.91– 16.11 mS/cm2 indicating that ions are present in the solution. However, the pH = 10.5 indicates that acidity is not being generated. The element that mostly leaches is iron. The highest percentage of leaching is observed for cadmium (69%) and chromium (93%). The concentrations of elements are under the maximum permissible limits for water according to the Peruvian legislation. However, mass transfer leach tests and immersion leach tests must be realized.

The present study investigates the nature of gold mineralogical distribution and association in a Cu-Au flotation circuit (1.6 g/t Au, feed head grade). The approach used in this study involves a combination of bulk gold assay and quantitative X-ray diffraction (QXRD), on a size-by-size basis, followed by QEMSCAN analysis on the -75+53 µm, -53+38 µm and -38+20 µm size fractions. The QXRD and QEMSCAN analysis showed that gold mineralogy is complex and fine-grained in the flotation feed, particularly in the -38+20 µm size fraction. Gold and pyrite concentration follow each other closely, suggesting gold-pyrite association. Quartz as the major gangue mineral shows a bi-modal distribution with respect to particle size. The identified gold particles were completely locked (~94 %) in pyrite as fine inclusions and 6 % locked as complex aggregates (-75+53 µm size fraction) whereas in the -38+20 µm size fraction, the identified gold grains occur as fine inclusions (~1-3 µm) within pyrite and silicates. However, in the intermediate size fraction (-53+38 µm), 75 % of the identified gold grains (10-22 µm) were over 90 % liberated and 25 % associated and locked in pyrite and complex aggregates (~2-4 µm). The identified gold grains in the -53+38 µm size fraction occurred as native and electrum with varying silver concentration between 8 and 20 % by weight. In the -38+20 µm size fraction, a gold telluride was also identified. Based on the mineralogical analysis of the feed, possible flotation strategies are discussed. The importance of properly bonded rail joints has received the attention of The National Research Council, whose committee will investigate several methods now used and determine the merits of each as applied to street railways. The results of this investigation should be appreciated no less by the mining industry. Literature on the subject of bonding mine tracks agrees, as a rule, "that the work is poorly done." With present day facilities there is little excuse for inadequate track conductivity, and a job well done must be maintained in order to realize results. Many years ago The Union Pacific Coal Company installed their first haulage locomotive, and at that time used the channel pin bond for joining the rails. The system utilized 500 volts and the, relatively small current for a large amount of power, undoubtedly, contributed to the success of the system. The bonding of both rails was considered imperative in those days, while now the bonding of one, rail is considered sufficient in most instances. The recent installations utilizing 250 volts and correspondingly heavier currents required a more effective method of joining the rails for use as an electrical conductor. The company has used the arc-weld bond since its introduction in 1919. The art of electric welding found great favor for various methods of doing the work. The first arc-weld bonds were placed on the outside of they ball of the rail, but the bonds were ill-adapted to rails lighter than sixty pounds per yard, and the results were that grooved locomotive wheels or derailed cars removed the bonds. Familiarity with the process of electric welding brought forth numerous schemes for joining the rails. In one, instance the rails and splice-plates were welded together and with excellent results for a short time. Track movement and vibration finally broke the welds and the method was dis¬carded. Another scheme consisted of placing a channel pin over each end of an annealed copper wire about twenty inches long. The idea was to develop some way of using short lengths of scrap wire. The pin and wire were then welded to the base of the rail. Numerous joints made in this way are still intact, but successful welds were so exceptional that the practice was abandoned. Some of these bonds were welded to the web of the rail, with the result that practically all rails broke at the weld; however, this is our only record of broken rails with arc-welded bonds. At one time a quantity of No. 2 bare iron wire wasp available and was tried as a bond and proved very satisfactory. Two or three strands twenty inches long were used and were welded to the base of the rail. The method was cheap and effective and of some merit for light rails on temporary track. The use of iron wire was criticized because it did not give a balanced circuit; that is, one having equal carrying capacity for trolley and track circuits; and I am of the opinion that this is not always necessary. The total length of bond that is in circuit is so small that it contributes very little additional resistance to the complete circuit consisting of trolley wire, rails and bonds.

Dynamic Load Test (DLT) on driven piles has been performed routinely all over the world. In several recent projects, even 100% testing has become a norm where every single pile is dynamically load tested. In these cases, most piles are of uniform sections, making the field analysis (CASE method) straight forward. The CASE method, which has been used for the last 50 years, however, is only applicable to uniform piles to monitor pile driving stresses as well as pile capacities. Signal matching analysis can handle different configurations. However, the analysis used to require user inputs (i.e., non-automatic). Manual signal matching analysis, which can solve non-uniform solutions, traditionally takes hour(s) to complete for one blow. As such, the real-time pile driving stresses and resistances had traditionally been relying upon the CASE method, using typical range of CASE damping (JC). Until 2021, due to the lack of a rigorous instant signal matching analysis for non-uniform piles, no tool was available to help engineers evaluate non-uniform piles in real-time. An inexperienced field engineer may overlook this shortcoming when evaluating peak driving stresses. Furthermore, ultimate bearing resistances for non-uniform piles may require further evaluation to account for the non-uniformity of piles if relying on the CASE method. This paper highlights recent advances in instant Signal Matching Analysis on non-uniform piles, allowing field engineers to monitor stresses and resistances of non-uniform piles during driving.

INTRODUCTION The slurry shield method was developed in Japan in 1963 and its experimental tunnelling work was performed in 1965. Although the history of this method is short compared with the conventional shield method in Japan, many companies such as Tekken Construction, Okumura Gumi, Nishimatsu Kensetsu, etc. are engaged at present in developing their own unique system of the slurry shield method. The ground of Japan is generally pervaded with ground water and a large number of districts are covered with soft ground, which is composed of fine sand, silt and clay, etc. Therefore, the conventional shield method has always used compressed air with various kinds of auxiliary methods. However, with this method there have been experienced numerous troubles such as ground settlements, lowering of ground water, oxygen shortage within the tunnel, and so forth. The slurry shield method has been developed with the above background. In recent years remarkable progress has been made from the engineering viewpoint in applying this method to driving various kinds of tunnels such as road tunnels, subways, water supply and sewer tunnels, and other tunnels. For example, machine operators monitor throughput and cycle time to keep the machines running continuously and to meet daily production quotas. The inverse velocity method has proven to be an effective approach for predicting slope failures in surface mines by analysing displacement monitoring data. However, the accuracy of inverse velocity method predictions is significantly affected by instrumental noise and natural environmental variations, which influence the identification of different deformation stages. To enhance predictive accuracy, this study applies and evaluates three filtering techniques to velocity time series data: Exponential smoothing filter, short-term smoothing filter, long-term smoothing filter and also compares it to raw data (no filtering). A refined prediction framework, that is, filtered inverse velocity method analyser, is proposed to improve slope failure forecasting in surface mining operations. The results demonstrate that filter selection plays a crucial role in optimising failure time predictions, offering valuable insights for geotechnical monitoring and early warning systems in surface mines.

"Tremendous progress has been made in recent years towards developing computational tools that allow ready solution of most common rock engineering problems, with amongst the most advanced of the tools focusing on evaluating engineered openings within Synthetic Rock Masses. These new codes have the potential to allow much more realistic design, but they must not be used without careful calibration – prior to – during and – post completion of any modelling. This paper explores some of the pitfalls of inadequate data collection and suggests more emphasis be given to calibration. Guidelines for minimum levels of parameter data are suggested for improving application of basic to sophisticated modelling codes.INTRODUCTION & BACKGROUNDTremendous progress has been made in recent years towards developing computational tools that allow ready solution of most common rock engineering problems. The degree of sophistication now possible with some of the available codes allows one to tackle extremely complex problems that were not thought tractable even a decade ago. Indeed, generation of synthetic numerical rock masses, based on discrete fracture network representations that closely mimic actual rock mass conditions, such as are shown in Figure 1, is today relatively straightforward, and not as user-challenging as employing state-of-the-art codes of even a few decades ago. This is largely because major improvements in computer graphics and in availability of ready-made user-friendly input-output interfaces have paralleled development of these new codes, now in some cases outpacing actual new analytical/procedure developments. This is something of a reversal from the first few decades of DOS-based rock engineering computational experience, when only rudimentary graphics were available and user-friendly input-output interfaces were virtually non-existent."

The modern Golden Cross mine entered the production phase in January 1992. The project is designed to produce over 100 000 oz/yr of gold and over 300 000 oz/yr of silver during a mine life of eight years. An open pit and an underground mine are operated producing around 850 000 t/yr of ore, to feed a conventional carbon-in-leach processing plant. Golden Cross is owned in joint venture by Coeur Gold New Zealand Limited (80%) and Viking Mining Company Limited (20 %).   Since the start of production several major aspects of the design have altered. The underground mine began as a mechanised cut and fill operation. The cut and fill stoping progresses in 3.3 m flatback lifts with maximum stoping width of 6 m. Where the ore zone is wider than 6 m a post pillar cut and fill method is used. In 1993 a new bench mining plan was introduced between the 270 and 260 levels. Flatbacking continued in the footwall drives in anticipation of variability of the ore width and orientation. The development of levels below the main service 200 level has indicated a possibility of bulk mining the ore block rather than flatbacks. This could lower mining costs but also introduce higher dilution rates. Development is in the advanced stages for trialing this method.

THE year 1929 has shown a surprising growth in the attention given by mining men to the subject of ground movement and subsidence from mining, as evidenced by the large number of articles that have appeared in technical journals, also papers and discussions in mining societies in the leading mining countries of the world. These have not been confined to consideration of the narrower limits of the subject but in application have extended to many of the fundamental questions involved in mining. The papers and discussions have been concerned with .ground movements resulting from mining of a great variety of minerals, metallic and lion-metallic. Examples of the former are: the mining of gold ore at Johannesburg, South Africa, and in the Kolar field, India; mining copper ores in Arizona and Utah; and lead and zinc in the Joplin region. Examples of ground movement resulting from mining non-metallic minerals are found in: the mining of. coal in many countries; potash mining in Germany; the mining of- common salt in several parts of the' United States; and the mining of sulfur in Texas and Louisiana; and examples of subsidence in the non-metallics are found exceptionally in the extraction of petroleum by wells, as in the Goose Creek field, on the Gulf Coast,' and recently in the Sour Lake field' of Texas
