"Historically, mineral processors have used inferential data like plant instrumentation, assays, and grind sizes to monitor the performance of their plants. The ability to monitor the minerals themselves on a daily basis has eluded all but the very largest and richest of operations. The advent of a new generation of compact, robust, and user-friendly SEM-based automated mineralogy systems looks set to accomplish this, aiming to bring daily mineral monitoring of plant performance within the reach of all mills from mid-size upwards. This paper describes the use of this machine at Greens Creek Mine, a 2.5 ktpd Ag-Au-Pb-Zn operation with a complex flotation flowsheet. During the trial, the machine provided turnaround from sample collection to reporting averaging 24-36 h for key daily samples. All equipment was located within the compact mill, and proved highly reliable despite the challenging environment. Turnaround time was fast enough for metallurgists to understand, and, where possible, respond to ore and process changes while they were still happening. The plethora of data generated was filtered to a simple report whereby mill management could quickly absorb key daily mineral-based performance indicators. This paper will describe how the data was used to understand the key drivers behind metallurgical efficiency at Greens Creek, and how metallurgists began using the information to enhance daily mill performance."

"The large Yandi channel iron deposit (CID) is located in the north-west of Western Australia and is currently mined via open pit methods. Drilling at Yandi is widely spaced and current estimates are mostly linear averages of the surrounding local samples. Linear estimates such as ordinary kriging (OK) based on block sizes that are significantly smaller than the dimensions of the drilling grid are less variable than the unknown reality (Armstrong and Champigny, 1989).Conditional simulation (CS) provides a series of plausible realisations that represent the actual grade variability at a small scale (eg 1 m + 1 m + 1 m). These simulations are very useful for a number of purposes, eg: optimising grade control, stockpiling and blending selection of optimal drill hole spacing assessing resource risk on contained tonnage and metal.At Yandi the major constituents of the ore (Fe, P2O5, SiO2, Al2O3 and LOI) are correlated to varying degrees. Independent CS of each assay variable will not reproduce these correlations. Reproducing the correlations (and the shape of scatterplots) is important if the simulations are used for the abovementioned purposes. This paper examines and compares various methods of CS that aim to reproduce the correlations between the assay variables.The CS methods evaluated in this paper are conditional co-simulation (CCS) using the linear model of co-regionalisation and two other, alternative multivariate simulation methods, which use min/max autocorrelation factors (MAF) or the stepwise conditional transform (SCT) to de-correlate assay variables before performing independent CS. It was found that CCS best reproduced the characteristics (histograms, variogram, scatterplots, etc) of the declustered drill hole data (Figure 1). Whilst simulation using MAF generally produced acceptable results, the method did not adequately reproduce the variance of the assay variables. The univariate statistics, histograms and experimental variograms were acceptable for simulations generated from the SCT. Bivariate statistics, cross-variograms and scatterplot reproduction for the SCT were unacceptable. The latter method produced inferior results because there were insufficient samples to obtain a reliable transform of the third assay variable in the transformation sequence.None of the abovementioned simulation methods provides good reproduction of all the scatterplots. This is due to the presence of clay pods, which cause some scatterplots to display two trends. These clay pods contain higher percentages of SiO2 and Al2O3 than the surrounding CID. The clay pods are generally smaller than the drill-grid dimensions. Thus their locations are typically unknown and they cannot be defined by manual interpretation, eg via wireframes. The locations of the clay pods were simulated via indicator CS. CCS was then performed separately for the clay pods and the CID. This significantly improved the reproduction of the correlation coefficients, the scatterplots and visually the simulation was more geologically realistic. Simulating the location of clay pods followed by CCS of assay variables is the recommended approach for simulation at the Yandi CID.CITATION:De-Vitry, C, 2013. "Quality control of drilled shafts and CFA piles is greatly dependent upon the practices of the site personnel. In many applications it is difficult or not possible to fully inspect the shaft prior to concreting, such as when the shaft is drilled under slurry. CFA piles are cast with no ability to inspect the shaft prior to concreting. There are numerous methods currently available to assess the integrity of drilled shafts and CFA piles. This paper will compare evaluations by three existing non-destructive test (NDT) methods with a new method of Thermal Integrity Profiling for assessing integrity in drilled shafts and CFA piles. This Thermal Integrity Profiling method determines the integrity over 100% of the shaft cross section, both inside and outside the reinforcing cage, by measuring the hydration temperature of the concrete along the length of the shaft. These temperature measurements are made typically only 12 to 48 hours after concrete placement, thus accelerating the construction process. Thermal Integrity Profiling will be described in detail and the Thermal Integrity Profile (TIP) results from several shafts with purpose built defects will be discussed along with several case histories from drilled shafts and CFA piles where Thermal Integrity Profiling was used. The case histories will compare TIP with various other NDT tests utilized on these particular piles including comparisons with Low Strain Integrity Testing and Cross Hole Sonic Logging. Test results for the various methods will be discussed and the excavation of the upper portion of one drilled shaft will be shown and discussed. IntroductionDrilled shafts can be a desirable foundation element in many applications due to the large axial and lateral capacities which are attainable for very large drilled shafts. Drilled shafts can be cast in a dry hole which allows for inspection of the hole prior to casting, but the casting process is very difficult to nearly impossible to inspect with any accuracy. Drilled shafts are frequently cast under slurry as a means to stabilize the surrounding soils during the construction process. When casting a drilled shaft under slurry, it is very difficult to accurately inspect the hole prior to casting and it is equally difficult to inspect the shaft during the casting process. CFA piles are another popular choice for their relative ease and speed of installation. The trend has been larger CFA piles carrying greater loads, which makes quality control critical for these piles. Many of the above mentioned processes are blind to inspection and therefore the chances increase for having defects present in the completed elements."

STRICTLY speaking, ore-dressing does not commence until after the ore is in the mill bins, but where complex ores are treated and their minerals separated to make the best commercial concentrate with the lowest economical tailing, ore-dressing problems begin and often center in the mine itself. This does not refer to the grade of the ore, but rather to the frequent condition in which metallurgical results radically different from customary are obtained because of changes in the character of the ore treated. Different varieties of ore can usually be identified as coming from well-defined depths or zones in the mine, or from known sections of the orebody. Varying degrees of alteration of the ore, inclusions of harmful gangue material, or variations in the quantities of component metallic minerals are often causes of temporarily bad metallurgical results in otherwise successfully operated plants, especially those employing differential flotation to. recover several valuable minerals contained in the ore.

ENAMl's Paipote Smelter commenced operations in 1951. At present, it processes 230,000 tonnes/year of green feed in a conventional smelter, which comprises one reverberatory furnace, two Hoboken, one Peirce-Smith converters and one rotary anode furnace. The feed is composed of 83% copper concentrate and 17% metallic copper precipitates, which results in a feed average grade of 32% of copper content. The final products are 75,000 tonnes/year of copper anodes and 48,000 tonnes/year of sulphuric acid. At present, the plant is undergoing a modernization to expand the smelter capacity to 300,000 tonnes/year of green feed and increase the sulphuric acid production to 100,000 tonnes/year. This will be achieved with the installation of an El Teniente Converter and an expansion in the acid plant. The work began in November 1991 and is scheduled to be in operaton by March 1993. The paper provides an overview of the modernization plans and results achieved to-date.

In 1963, the full-scale engineering study for the development of an iron, steel, and vanadium plant was initiated. This was the birth of Evraz Highveld and its process flow as it is known today. Highveld started out as a steelworks that produced steel and vanadium-bearing slag from a titaniferous magnetite iron ore mined from its own mine site near Steelpoort. The process utilized co-current rotary kilns for prereduction, and submerged-arc furnaces for the production of pig iron with approximately 1.15% vanadium. Because of various technical challenges that the submerged-arc furnaces experienced over the years, a decision was taken in 2004 to convert the furnaces to open slag bath (OSB) operation, in order to enable the maximum production of iron and vanadium while improving the control over operational parameters. The conversion proved to be highly successful and, since 2005, three furnaces have been converted to OSB operation. The fourth furnace will be converted in the first half of 2011. The conversion to OSB furnaces not only yields higher vanadium recovery to the metal at the iron plant, but also improves the overall throughput of the steel plant. This is the result of the higher carbon content of the liquid iron from the OSB furnaces, eliminating the need for anthracite addition to the shaking ladle process. This reduces the blowing time by approximately 60%. The conversion of the furnaces to OSB configuration is seen as an enabling technology change and a prerequisite to the implementation of other plant improvements that are envisaged. The long-term vision of EHSV is to convert five furnaces to OSB mode, and permanently decommission the two remaining submerged-arc furnaces. This will allow EHSV to maintain current steel and vanadium production but at a significantly improved overall efficiency.

At the Waikato North Head Ironsand operation, NZ Steel Mining Ltd is using a Bucket Wheel Excavator û shiftable conveyor mining system to excavate Titanomagnetite bearing sand and clay. The system utilises two Bucket Wheel Excavators with a two level shiftable bench conveyor and common trunk conveyor to deliver the material to a processing plant. The system was commissioned in November 1984 and has proved itself to be a high capacity, low cost method of excavating. Techniques of handling high sand faces have been developed and the conveyor layouts are going through a process of change to cope with the variable geo technical conditions and remain within: the characteristics of the excavators. The safety requirements for operating the system have been of a high standard and the experience has increased the confidence of the Company and the Mines Department Inspector's, for the first Bucket Wheel Excavator Mining system in New Zealand.

History The Cortez Mining District has a long history of mining activity dating back to 1862. More recently, Cortez Gold Mines had operated a cyanide leach, counter current decantation (CCD) recovery gold mill from January 1969 to February 1976. This type of plant has been standard in the US for treating higher grade, finely disseminated gold in Carlin type ores. The mill was initially operated from 1969 to 1973 at 1.5 kt/d (1650 stpd) on oxidized ore from the Cortez ore body. In 1973, the mill was operated at 2 kt/d (2200 stpd) on softer, less oxidized, high clay ore from Gold Acres, located 13 km (8 miles) west of Cortez, NV. In February 1976, the oxidized portion of the ore body at Gold Acres was depleted and the mill ceased operations. Successful heap leaching of the lower grade portion of the ores was practiced at both Cortez and Gold Acres to supplement the milling operations. Valuable experience was gained in the operation of these two heap leaching programs (Duncan and Smolik, 1977). The ore heaps at Gold Acres and Cortez were releached with a limited crew from 1976 to 1979. The surge in the price of gold in late 1979 sparked an interest to incorporate new techniques into treating lower grade and less oxidized carbonaceous ores at Cortez. In early 1980, heap leaching was started on low grade oxidized dump material left from the earlier Cortez mining operation. By June of 1980, testwork was completed on the London Extension Dump, a low grade, mildly carbonaceous dump at Gold Acres. It was decided to convert the mill at Cortez from the conventional cyanide leach CCD recovery plant to a carbon-in-leach (CIL) recovery system. In May 1983, ore processing from the Horse Canyon deposit began. The Horse Canyon ore body contains both oxide and carbonaceous ores and is located 22.5 km (14 miles) from the Cortez mill. The Cortez CIL circuit was expanded to handle a blend of oxide and carbonaceous ores from Horse Canyon. Ore selection In the last quarter 1979, gold prices were increasing to a point where restarting the Cortez mill, idled since 1976, appeared imminent. Several previously explored geologic reserves at various stages of development were available as possible sources of feed for the mill. Initial metallurgical testing of dumps and tailings from earlier operations was completed, and previously uneconomic deposits were explored. It was decided to pursue sources of ore with the least lead time to production and those with the least capital cost requirements. A master plan was developed to bring the four profitable ore resources into production. Project C9040 – ‘Structure Response to Blast Vibration’, funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP), involved the investigation of the structural response from blast vibration of three houses of brick veneer construction subject to a wide range of ground vibration levels. This paper summarises the findings of a house subject to vibration levels up to 220 mm/s (8.7 in/s). Damage attributable to blast vibration was not observed until vibration levels exceeded 70 mm/s (2.8 in/s).

The availability of mineral aggregates for construction purposes is rapidly declining through inadequate resource planning. restrictive zoning and legislation , and competing land uses. The Geological Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources has undertaken to provide aggregate inventory reports for all townships designated under The Pits and Quarries Control Act, 1971, and eventually for all towns hips in heavily populated areas. The reports contain maps and recommendations for extractive zoning by municipalities; of necessity only the largest deposits are given priority recommendations. It is intended that these reports should improve the resource planning in areas underlain by large aggregate deposits. The inventory is only possible because a concentrated effort has been made to map the Quaternary geology of populated areas over the last ten years. Future needs require that we develop methods to determine the extent of poorly defined and buried aggregates and that we look for natural alternatives.

This includes new and innovative technical solutions as well as the sensitive management of interests. The lignite industry has learned that openness and the constant effort to exchange viewpoints within their environment are all essential elements. The credibility that has been gained over the decades is the foundation on which the lignite industry can build its future. Beyond that a framework of political guidelines is necessary. Public interest in a secure and inex-pensive energy supply that also includes lignite is indispensable. In this context, the lignite industry will then be able to answer the questions which are directed at them and concern the economy, ecology, and social tolerability also by indicators."

Permian coal seams from the Tomago Coal Measures in the Northern Coalfield, New South Wales, were analysed petrographically and reflectance measurements made for each. Vitrite contents were moderate to high for most of the coals but for two they were very low.The mineral-matter contents were low to moderate by Australian standards. Different profiles of a particular seam could be correlated by petrographic methods.Standard seam profiles were drawn up and from these an idealized Tomago seam sequence was compiled. All the coals were of high-volatile bituminous rank. Their carbon contents, but not thcir reflectances, varied significantly with the quantity of vitrinite present.

During the design and operation stages of a block caving project, a large amount of research and development work has been undertaken in the Tongkuangyu Copper Mine. This paper presents the research achievements from these studies, including a rock mass quality evaluation method, cavability prediction, fragmentation evaluation, caving mechanisms, a computerised production scheduling model and the optimised draw control system. The main features of the block caving system in the Tongkuangyu Copper Mine are also discussed.

Over the past 30 years, underground paste backfill systems have been implemented across the globe in many configurations, each with a primary focus of providing high quality backfill to enhance mine operations. However, a number of key design drivers are not always well understood within design engineering firms that occasionally undertake this work, leaving opportunities on the table. Perhaps not always obvious to those newly embracing paste technology, identifying key drivers and opportunities attainable through a paste backfill system is generally not straightforward, requiring innovative approaches to securing higher productivity, availability, performance, maintainability, and operator health and safety. This paper describes a number of applications and audits of paste backfill systems for several challenging mine operations. Key challenges include iterative design aspects of availability of good backfill materials, plant location and configuration, general arrangement, and binder receiving/storage systems.

A mathematical model is derived in dimensionless form which simulates the effluent concentration response of reagents from spent heaps under both fresh and recycled water rinsing. The model is based on dispersion from isochoric pathways distributed in length and cross-section, oriented normal to convection channels in ideal plug flow. The effects of heap height, rinsate flow, and initial reagent concentration are examined. It is shown that the rinsing cycle undergoes a distinct shift between fast and slow rinsing at a certain time depending on the amount of stagnant solution in the heap, and the distribution of dispersion pathways. Results of preliminary column rinsing tests on both agglomerated and unagglomerated ores are presented which partially validate the model.

Distillable oils derived from coal were desulfurized and hydrogenated at 2,500 psig in a two-step vapor-phase catalytic operation to give a product rich in saturated cyclic hydrocarbons. The first step was mainly a desulfurization at 400 C, the second a saturation at 300 C. One of the oils used as feed stock was from low-temperature carbonization of a bituminous coal, the other was from the liquid-phase hydrogenation of coal in the Bureau's pilot plant. The product from the saturation step was distilled to remove the light ends and high-boiling residue and to recover a fraction having acceptable properties with respect to heating value, density, freezing point, viscosity, and boiling range according to specifications suggested by the Air Force for ultra-high-speed aircraft fuel. Quantities of the fuel fraction available were too small for the thermal stability test approved by the Air Force. The experiments, performed on laboratory scale, comprised mostly a study of the effect of varying the oil feed rate (at constant oil-to-hydrogen ratio) on the yield of the desired fuel fraction. The yield of the fuel fraction made from low-temperature carbonization oil was a little more than 1 percent of the weight of coal carbonized; that from coal-hydrogenation oil was about 12 percent of the weight of coal hydrogenated. A few attempts to do both desulfurization and saturation in one operation with sulfur resistant catalysts, developed for vapor-phase hydrogenation or hydroforming, were unsuccessful. By leaving the low-boiling ends in both feed stocks to desulfurization, another product was obtained: a low-sulfur aromatic cut boiling below 200 C. This material would be suitable as a solvent or a chemical raw material.

Phase relations of gadolinium alloyed, up to 40 weight-percent (wt pct), with AISI 304-type stainless steel were established. Body-and face-centered cubic iron-rich solid solution phases and several intermetallic gadolinium-containing compounds of variable composition that approximated the formulas Fe9Gd, Ni7Gd2, Ni3Gd, Fe2Gd, NiGd, and NiGd3 were identified. The intermetallic phases Fe9Gd and Ni7Gd2 were noted to melt at about 1,080° C at about 0 to 2 wt pct gadolinium. The melting temperature of Fe9Gd increased with increas-ing gadolinium content to a plateau at about 1,230°C and 30 wt pct gadolinium, and the melting point of Ni7Gd2 decreased to a plateau at 900° C and 30 wt pct gadolinium where Ni3Gd, NiGd, and Fe2Gd coexist. Body-centered cubic iron solid solution was stable from 1 to 2 wt pct gadolinium to higher contents, 30 wt pct gadolinium or possibly more, and face-centered cubic iron up to 12 wt pct gadolinium below 1,200° C. The stability of these phases above 1,200° C was not resolved except for the mel points. A limited number of fabrication variables as well as mechanical and corrosion properties of alloys containing up to 5 wt pct gadolinium were studied. Equilibrating and forming operations were best conducted at about 940° to 1,080° C. Some variability in the yield and tensile strengths of alloys was noted; however, there was a continual decrease in ductility and impact resistance with increasing gadolinium contents. The resistance of gadolinium alloys to corrosion in water at 354° C was about the same as stainless steel.

"The induration of iron ore pellets has always utilized prefired pellets to protect the pallet cars from the environment of the induration furnace. This paper presents the process used to obtain superior upper sidewalls. These heat resistant castings are used on induration pallet cars, and their life improvements by as much as 400% is a significant step towards the reduction of the prefired (or hearth layer pellets.) The benefit to the industry in the removal of the hearth layer is improved overall productivity. IntroductionThe Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) operates with production facilities located in Labrador City, Newfoundland and Sept Iles, Quebec. It has recently been acquired by North Limited, an Australian based resource oriented company. Prior to its acquisition, IOC has examined several methods of operational cost reductions. One of these was an examination of indurrating pallets. Pallets are composed of numerous assemblies and sub-assemblies. The examination of the upper sidewalls began as an intent to increase the operational life of the component. The anticipated net effect was to be a reduction in the overall pallet maintenance cost. All of the components and assemblies have undergone a severe scrutiny. IOC has found that the success of the project has depended upon not only the technical competency of all parties involved, but also upon the ability to share risk, to be innovative, and to find a partner with whom the development can proceed without fear and yet with accountability. IOC has found in Cast Steel Products (CSP) such a partner in the field of pallet development. This paper will undertake to explore the progression into the arena of partnering between IOC and CSP. CSP and IOC met in the fall of 1994. The work of re-engineering the pallets began with an initial order for 36 pallets in March, 1995. The work on the upper sidewalls involved segregation of the effect of alloy development versus physical geometry development. The nature of partnering between the two companies allocated alloy development to IOC and physical geometry development to CSP, yet no advancements were made in either area without the close co-operation or the involvement of both partners."

"The geological features of a rock mass have a direct influence on its blasting characteristics. It has been observed that perimeter control techniques provide excellent results in massive crystalline formations but may give poor results in weak and or highly jointed formations.A field study was conducted with the objective of understanding the role played by the geological features of a rock mass in producing and controlling blast damage. The field work involved the assessment of blast damage at several operating mines and the blasting of drift rounds in a geologically dominant rock mass.The effect of rock strength, rock quality designation (RQD), joint parameters and hydrogeological conditions on blast damage is described below. The influence of number and thickness of weak layers on blast damage is also discussed below on the basis of quantitative data. In addition, critical particle velocity ranges for damage to different rock types have also been outlined in this paper."

When Enron rocked the United States with its Titanic-sized financial accounting scandal, miners and metallurgists were probably too busy on the mine sites in remote locations to wonder about its ripple effect. But then Enron sank, Arthur Andersen tanked and the list of scandals, costing billions of dollars, continued to ripple. Followed by the Public Company Accounting Reform and Investor Protection Act of 2002 (Sarbanes-Oxley), the recent credit crunch and weak economy, the currents from Enron?s collapse eventually washed right into the mine and the mill. These events placed intense scrutiny on metals production accounting processes as traditional semi-qualitative metal accounting practices provided insufficient credibility and transparency. ?There is growing intolerance of organizations that are unsure about the location of thousands of tonnes of ore, which will typically lose 10 to 15% of their notional value on the way to the concentrator,? Rob Morrison wrote in the opening chapter to An Introduction to Metal Accounting and Balancing. ?If the measurement and forecasts also contain qualitative (fudge) factors, a very real suspicion might emerge about just how much metal might disappear (by theft or misplacement) before detection becomes likely.? Metallurgical accounting, put simply, is the tracking and reporting of the quantity and quality (tonnage and grade, usually) of materials entering or leaving each stage from source to product for a specified accounting period. Lacking an accounting standard, metals accounting in precious metal operations has been performed in an ad-hoc, informal manner, leading to numerous errors and unidentified potentially significant inefficiencies and financial losses. As a result, mining companies are beginning to examine the quality of their metals accounting systems since they form the basis of mining company?s financial accounts and reports. As part of an effort to create that accounting standard in the mineral industry, University of Queensland?s Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre published the textbook An Introduction to Metal Accounting and Balancing in 2009. While development of a textbook and standard are significant steps forward, the challenge in the precious metals industry is in the application of some of these suggested practices. Though improving process transparency and precious metals accounting reporting accuracy is a key driver for change from the financial side, perhaps even more important is the potential benefit to operational performance that comes with better measurement, accounting and reconciliation systems. Loss of precious metals, processing of waste and inefficient mining and processing systems are all problems that are faced in an operation on a daily basis that can help be resolved through improvements in metal accounting and reconciliation. The financial consequences of such operational inefficiencies and bad decisions based on poor information are arguably greater than consequences of fraudulent accounting. Large discrepancies between mine and mill measurement systems that measure the quantity and quality of valuable material currently exist. Some of these are expected because of statistical variation, but inherent random measurement variation is sometimes an insufficient explanation. Though the mill can usually make much better production estimates through their measurement systems (that is, less variation), this knowledge rarely benefits the mine. 3 Moreover, even if the mine does a reasonably good job of estimating expected production at the grade control level (in situ), issues such as blast movement, poor mining practice and inefficient ore/waste classification make for a disconnect between the in situ estimates of the mine and the estimates from the concentrator. This inhibits effective evaluation of the reserve and grade control models using concentrator estimates. Linking the two ends, mining and concentration, is a neglected area sorely in need of an overhaul. Hence the need for improved mine to mill reconciliation ? the area of comparing, balancing and adjusting production estimates between mine and mill for consistency in reporting.
