This paper presents costs for a coal log pipeline that can transport coal over distances from 50 km to 1500 km. The coal log pipeline (CLP) concept is a new technology in w hich coal is compacted into water impermeable circular cylinders that can be suspended in water flowing through an underground pipe. CLP includes processes to prepare the run-of-mine coal for compaction, the injection of coal logs into a pressurised water-lilled pipeline, the conveyance of the coal through a pipe including special pumping stations, and the treatment of the coal logs and water at the pipeline outlet. An 8 inch (203 mm) pipeline can transport more than 2 Ml of coal per year. CLP components have been extensively tested in bench-scale facilities where these tests have included start up/shutdown steady state flow behaviour, end of pipeline treatment of water and coal log handling, water hammer effects, abrasion of logs and pipeline, coal log manufacture, and other engineering operations. Several sites are being considered in the United States (US) for the first commercial demonstration that will probably take place in 1998. The cost calculations are based on realistic values for all the components of a CLP. including a return on investment. For pipelines of different diameter, values for coal transportation are presented in terms of $(USVtonne as a function of distance.

Calcium carbonate is one of the most widely used industrial minerals in applications like cement, lime, agriculture, power plant fluegas desulfurization (FGD) and construction aggregates. Most applications are generally high-volume and low value ($9/t or $10/st) or less free-on-board (f.o.b.) mine site) uses of this material. Specialty uses of ground calcium carbonate (GCC) are typically referred to as ?performance mineral? or ?extender and ?ller? applications. Primary specialty markets for GCC include paper and plastics as well as a number of construction applications including joint compounds, carpet backing, paint, and adhesives, caulks and sealants (ACS). Other important specialty applications for GCC include rubber, food and personal care products. A new and growing application for GCC is in nonwoven fabrics, where this mineral replaces a small percentage of the polymer. Typical specialty applications for GCC are color sensitive and require extremely white/bright materials. Although deposits of limestone are located in most states, high brightness resources are relatively rare and controlled by a limited group of suppliers.

This paper will address methods to manage hydraulic hose and coupling inventory so that parts will be available to build assemblies for the vast majority of equipment with as little inventory as possible. Topics also to be covered will include some basic hose assembly tagging techniques that will help keep equipment running by tracking problem hoses and building ?band aid? kits, having problem hoses premade in stock, and inventory usage tracking (one of the biggest problems for any inventory manager is knowing which couplings have been used so they can re-order). Cradle to grave tracking of hydraulic and industrial hoses insures reliable service of vehicles and ethical disposal of old hoses and couplings. With accountability for disposal of hose products that may contain chlorine (neoprene tube material in some hydraulic hoses) and carbon black that will be scrutinized more closely in the future, a proactive approach should be adopted in order to minimize maintenance facility problems.

The evaluation of historical goldfields has been common over the past 15 years, reflecting changing economic conditions, improvements in knowledge and technology and lack of greenfield sites. Many goldfields comprise narrow gold-quartz veins, which are structurally complex with an irregular distribution of gold, have variable geometry and architecture and display late deformational effects. The study of historical mine records can be an important tool during early and advanced project evaluation, since it contributes to understanding the orebody, exploration target size and setting expectations. Mine records include documents such as plans, sections, reports, news cuttings, production tabulations, etc. A major advantage for the modern explorer is the capability of computer modelling to display this data in 3D. Historical records can give the explorer substantial information on various deposit characteristics, not least grade and geological continuity, geometry and architecture, mineralogy, metallurgical properties, bulk density and ground conditions. From an evaluation perspective, historical records can be used to support a Mineral Resource estimate, though its application will depend upon the quality and quantity of the data and judgement of the Competent Person. Effectively used, historical records can reduce geological uncertainty and focus evaluation efforts û thus reducing project risk.

MINING asbestos ore by caving at Thetford Mines, Quebec, has been described in the Transactions of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in papers presented by the staffs of The Asbestos Corp. Ltd., in 1934, and Johnson's Co. Ltd., in 1941. The production by caving prior to 1949, in round figures, has been 14,500,000 tons of ore by The Asbestos Corp. and 5,500,000 by Johnson's Co. They are the only caving operations in asbestos at the present time. The Jeffrey mine of the Canadian Johns-Manville Co. at Asbestos, 40 miles southwest of Thetford, is well along in preparations for caving, and The Bell Asbestos Mines Ltd. at Thetford Mines, will follow their examples later. Since it has been the subject of a number of technical papers, this contribution is offered as a review of progress. Some introductory information seems appropriate, for few members of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers are familiar with the mineral, or how asbestos deposits differ from others in caving characteristics. Asbestos is found in peridotite, a basic intrusive rock irregularly altered to serpentine and erratically fractured, well enough to cave in bulk, but leaving many blocks of solid ore of all sizes scattered through the deposit. Chrysotile is the variety of asbestos produced in Canada. Its fibers are the most valuable commercially, having a good proportion of long fibers, strong, silky, flexible, and suitable for spinning. The fibers occur in all lengths, from the microscopic to 3 in., or more, the shorter are more abundant. Their values depend on length combined with other qualities noted above. They occur as veinlets filling fissures in the peridotite, with crystals compactly arranged in parallel across the cracks. They are sometimes lightly frozen to the walls but the partings are distinct, often marked by particles of magnetite adhering to the fiber ends. Sometimes they break away from the rock in slabs an inch or more in thickness. In wide fissures the fibers are not always continuous, the "broken fibers" being separated by lines of parting with occasional scattered grains of magnetite, which is an injurious mineral to be elirninated when possible. In addition to the chrysotile ''Cross fiber," some "slip fiber" is found in fault fractures in limited quantities of less valuable character. With the exception of the Asbestos Corp, ore, in which the content is said to be more uniform, asbestos is eccentrically distributed through the peridotite. It is the general impression that the higher grades are more often found in hard rock. There are rich pockets and leaner areas which range down through various grades to minor barren sections. Wholesale mining is necessary to make sure of recovering all the high grade for there are no reliable indications of its existence. Ore selection only appears in constructing assay-grade limits for caving. The mill yield of the Thetford ore body in 1934 was 6 to 10 pct of the ore milled, made up of all classes, with occasional runs up to 15 pct or so. A injeção de carvão pulverizado (PCI) é uma técnica altamente utilizada nos altos-fornos pelas siderúrgicas brasileiras, buscando a redução do consumo específico de coque por tonelada de gusa. A combustão do carvão pulverizado ocorre em temperaturas elevadas (em torno de 2.000°C), altas taxas de aquecimento (104 a 105 °C/s), tempo de reação de poucos centésimos de segundos, seguida pela gaseificação na presença de CO2. Este trabalho visa apresentar o andamento da construção do simulador da zona de combustão do alto-forno desenvolvido pelo LASID-UFRGS e os estudos previstos nos projetos em andamento, que contemplam também a avaliação de carvões brasileiros que apresentem potencial de substituição de carvões atualmente importados para injeção em altos fornos brasileiros. A partir do levantamento do estado da arte e visitas técnicas a simuladores em operação, foi discutido um projeto moderno, automatizado, de configuração vertical e que possibilitasse a operação tanto em modo one shot como contínuo. Algumas inovações podem ser destacadas, como a possibilidade de alterar o tempo de residência da amostra carbonosa na zona de combustão do simulador, a medição da temperatura com termopares ultra-rápidos (ms), o controle e aquisição de diversos parâmetros termodinâmicos (P, T, t) e avaliação dos produtos sólidos e gasosos resultantes.

Investigation of an extensive deposit of chromite-bearing actinolite-talc schist situated on the summit of Casper Mountain, 10 miles south of Casper, Wyo., was one of the first projects Undertaken by the Bureau of Mines under the Strategic Materials Act (Public 117, 76th Cong., Ch. 190, 1st sess.), for which an appropriation became available August 9, 1939. During the previous summer; the Geological Survey? made? a magnetometrical survey of the area in which the schist occurred. It was exposed in several small lenses and two larger ones aggregating about 19?acres in area. Although the occurrence of chromite here had been known for many years, the only work done on the deposit was the digging of? a few shallow pits on some of the more promising outcrops. From August 23 to December 3, 1939, the Bureau of Mines investigated the larger of the two main schist bodies. Twenty-four trenches having a total length of 8,073 feet were dug across the deposit, and its subsurface extension was explored by 3,623 feet of diamond drilling. Over 32 tons of samples were shipped to the Metallurgical Division of the Bureau of Mines at Reno, Nev., for reduction, analysis, and ore testing. In all, there were 853 individual samples. Geological maps, based upon examination of outcrops, trenches, and drill cores, as well as a contour map of the area were made by the Geological Survey.

The performance of a rotating fixed bed reactor in recovering copper from industrial waste solutions by cementation is studied under various conditions. The rotating fixed bed is made of stacked woven steel screens to take advantage of two features of screens: the ability to present large area per unit volume and their ability to promote high turbulence. Variables studied are initial CuSO4 concentration, bed rotation speed, mesh number of the screens and bed thickness. The presence of baffles was found to increase the rate of cementation. The data were correlated by a dimensionless mass transfer correlation suitable for the design and operation of large scale cementation reactors.

"There are increasingly stricter environmental regulations imposed for use of cyanide leaching for the extraction of gold from ores. Alternative lixiviants to cyanide, preferably with low toxicity, have been extensively studied. Thiosulphate has emerged as one of the most suitable alternative leaching agent in place of cyanide due to its low toxicity and technical attributes e.g. fast leaching kinetics, high gold extractions from carbonaceous ores in particular. High solubility of most copper minerals in cyanide solutions results in low gold extractions due to excessively high consumption of cyanide. In contrast, low reactivity of copper minerals in thiosulphate solutions makes thiosulphate leaching potentially suitable alternative for treatment Cu-bearing gold ores. The extraction of gold/silver from a copper-bearing pyritic gold concentrate (62 g/t Au, 110 g/t Ag and 0.3% Cu) in thiosulphate solutions was investigated in this study. The concentrate is composed of predominantly quartz (25%) and pyrite (32.7%) as well as sphalerite (5.37%), galena (2.12%) and anglesite (1.13%). Other minor minerals are arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, covellite and bournonite. Previous studies by the authors indicated that the concentrate did not respond well to cyanide leaching (i.e. 45-46% Au/Ag at 1 g/L NaCN). The effects of concentration of ammonia (0.2-1.5 M NH3), thiosulphate (0.1-0.75 M S2O3) and copper (0-20 mM CuSO4) on the extraction of gold and silver over 8 h. was investigated. Increasing the concentration of thiosulphate and ammonia substantially improved the rate and extent of gold leaching while high copper levels produced an adverse effect particularly at low concentration of thiosulphate (i.e. 0.1 M). Complete extraction of gold was achieved under suitable conditions. In contrast to gold, silver extractions remained consistently at low levels (i.e. 28%). These findings demonstrated that thiosulphate leaching could be used to achieve acceptable levels of gold extraction from the copper-bearing pyritic gold concentrate."

With the change in legislation under the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA), the responsibility for administering the effects of blasting on the environment, has transferred from an essentially central government system to local bodies. This naturally will allow for a variety of compliance levels and control procedures which will depend on the particular local body and rather ad hoc arrangements. It is anticipated that the existing NZ Standard on blast vibration levels will soon be replaced by the Australian Standard. These changes raise the question as to what should be used as suitable compliance levels to prevent damage to structures. The paper will address the measurement, control levels and the appropriateness of current standards in relation to the overall legal framework of the RMA.

This study aims to investigate the effects of operational variables on concentrate grade, recovery, separation efficiency, and kinetic parameters of the copper flotation process. For this purpose, the effects of the pulp solids content, collector and frother dosage, and preparation and concentrate collection time were studied using a Taguchi experimental design. The results of statistical analyses indicated that the concentrate collection time and pulp density were the most influential parameters on concentrate grade. Considering copper recovery, concentrate collection time, collector dosage, and pulp density were the most significant variables, in decreasing order of importance. Also, the separation efficiency was mostly influenced by the concentrate collection time. Furthermore, kinetic studies showed that the second-order rectangular distribution model perfectly matched the experimental flotation data. The highest kinetic constant of 0.0756 s−1 was obtained from the test, which was performed with 35% solids content and 40 and 20 g/t collector and frother, respectively. The highest predicted copper recovery of 99.57% was obtained from the test at 30% solids content, and the collector and frother dosages of 40 and 15 g/t, respectively

The roles of pulsating mechanisms such as the amplitude and frequency of the jig cycle are well established in jigging. Also well established are the roles of the size ratio and the volume fraction of the feed. In iron ore beneficiation plants, these process parameters are optimized to achieve the highest efficiency. However, the role of one of the more important feed characteristics, the liberation characteristic of the feed, has not been studied in detail. Evaluation of the liberation characteristics is difficult because the required washability test is not viable for iron ore feed. In this paper, a new method is proposed in which the liberation characteristics are measured through a separation efficiency value. In the new evaluation method, jigging parameters such as amplitude and frequency of the jig cycle are optimized from the fundamental understanding of the process dynamics and feed characteristics such as size distribution. Then, feeds with different liberation characteristics are tested to evaluate the liberation characteristics of feed in jigging.

Standard petrographic profiles for many Permian seams from New South Wales and Queensland have been drawn up. The standard profiles of seams of the same age and from one or more coalfields were used to compile an idealized or type seam sequence for those coals in which more than half the seam profiles were similar to one another. El presente trabajo describe el plan de minado del yacimiento de Cuajone a través de las leyes de corte variable y stock dinámicos con el fin de maximizar el valor presente neto a largo plazo. La estrategia de leyes de corte variables consiste en seleccionar material desde una ley superior a la ley de corte de equilibrio del plan. Luego, el material de alta ley es llevado directamente a la planta, que al ser extraído anticipadamente, genera un mayor valor para el negocio, al tiempo que aprovecha el costo de oportunidad. De otro lado, el mineral restante que haya sido extraído es llevado a depósitos de almacenamiento (stocks dinámicos). Como consecuencia, esta estrategia permite realizar una mejor toma de decisiones que se ajuste más a la realidad de cada periodo, logrando aprovechar al máximo los periodos de alza de precio de los metales, así como poder incrementar la producción de concentrado en periodo de depresión de los precios.

Advances in inexpensive computer automation led to the development and use of a computerized ore control system at the Cyprus Copperstone Gold Mine near Parker, AZ. These new ore control practices improved accuracy, performance and productivity of the ore control effort. An automated system for data collection, including bar coding of blasthole samples, laboratory analysis, data management, grade estimation, cut delineation and ore zone stake out, plays a major role in ore control practices. This is of particular interest because of the large amount of blasthole information being processed, analyzed and reported daily. Copperstone Gold management has been progressive toward new, efficient methods regarding ore reserve estimation, long-term mine planning, short-term mine planning, ore control and surveying. Technological advances, including powerful personal computers, applicable mine planning software and surveying instrumentation, have become readily available and affordable. The computerized ore control procedures used at Copperstone include sample data collection, laboratory automation and computerized data management. These have reduced the time to complete ore control on a blast pattern by 50% to 75%. The final product - ore control - is generated in a more timely and accurate manner.

"Suggestions have been made that the appraisal of mining assets using discounted cash flow techniques should be based solely on proven and probable reserves in reliance upon the widespread international recognition of uniform resource definitions. Following a review of general accepted valuation principles, a survey of the literature and, most importantly, a review of real transactions in the open market, it is clear that valuators should not be constrained by the growing acceptance of modern mineral resource codes. On the contrary, valuation practitioners should be encouraged to examine all classes of mineralization and, after making due allowance for risk, to utilize all mineral resources as a basis for determining fair market value.INTRODUCTIONGreat strides have been made recently in achieving an international consensus on mineral reserve and resource definitions and classifications. The Australasian JORC code, the CIM code in Canada, the SME proposal in the United States and even a proposed code from the United Nations have all brought the objective within reach.Unfortunately, this success has led to another problem for mineral valuators. Certain securities regulators, tax collectors and their ilk have begun to expound on the opinion that discounted cash flow projections carried out to calculate net present values that would form the basis for a valuation determination should be based solely on proven and probable reserves. Pectic acid gel crosslinked with epichlorohydrin was found to have very high selectivity to lead(II) and iron(III) ions over zinc(II) ion compared with commercial weakly cation exchange resins containing the same carboxylic functional groups, suitable for removing small amount of impurity metal ions from waste zinc plating solutions. In order to lower the cost, new adsorption gel was prepared from orange juice residue containing pectic acid by crosslinking with epichlorohydrin, which was also found to be suitable for removing these impurities. Further, very cheap adsorption gels was prepared not only from orange but also from apple juice residues by a simple method through just saponificating pectin substances contained in these residues into pectic acid by calcium hydroxide followed by water washing and drying. These adsorption gels exhibited excellent adsorption behaviors for removing the impurity metal ions away from zinc.

The historical development of South Yorkshire mining is traced and note made of the liability to generate spontaneous combustion of some of the seams which have been worked. The liability factor is analysed firstly as an inherent property in the material of a coal seam, and secondly as a circumstance of a situation in which access is provided for the air necessary to sustain oxidation. The geological settings in which incidents of heatings have been known to occur is discussed and conditions favouring a natural pre-disposition to spontaneous oxidation exposed, particularly the effect of argillaceous material overlying the seam. An extensive strata-dynamic study follows to demonstrate the situations in which stray air currents tend to impinge on readily oxidizable material. Prevention techniques are indicated as the identification of strata-dynamic situations in which air access to broken coal is induced and thereafter th operational action to seal off the voids which have been opened up so as to exclude air from the broken coal. Measures to reduce the tendency for ventilating air to short circuit across waste voids, and to obviate deflection of air into packs are outlined. The importance of face and roadway design features is demonstrated and the consequences of practices inimical to good control of spontaneous combustion are related. Discussions on means of detection and also on the sealant materials available are included.
