"The control of the operation of semi autogeneous grinding (SAG) mills is mainly achieved through adjustments of feed rate, water addition and speed of rotation. With the introduction of image based sensors it is possible to have on-line measurements of the size distribution of the ore feeding a SAG mill. This information could be used for the development of a control strategy to regulate a SAG mill feed size distribution to a set-point. The control of the size distribution is carried out by adjustment of the speed of the ore extractors underneath the ore stockpile. The potential and difficulty associated with the implementation of such control are assessed using a multivariable statistical analysis of data collected from the operation of the grinding circuit of the Agnico-Eagle Goldex mine in Val d’Or, QC. A control strategy for the ore feed size distribution is assessed using a simulator of the ore stockpile operation.INTRODUCTIONThe popularity of autogeneous (FAG) and semi autogeneous (SAG) grinding mills has been increasing over the last 20 years (Napier Munn et al., 1996). These mills use the ore or a combination of ore and steel balls as the grinding media. Since the ore is used as a media for the size reduction the mill ore feed size distribution impacts the performance of the mill. Several papers were recently published on this subject (Dance et al.,2011; Wennen & Murr, 2011; Dance & Valery, 2011; Allaire et al., 2011) showing the advantages of preparing the feed size distribution to maximize the circuit throughput or mill efficiency (Wennen & Murr, 2011; Dance & Valery, 2011; Allaire et al., 2011). With the availability of particle size sensor based on image analysis of the ore on a conveyor (Partanen et al., 2001; Bobo et al. 2004; Edwards et al., 2002; Wei & Craig, 2009) it is possible to control the size distribution of the ore feeding autogeneous or semi autogeneous mills (Partanen et al., 2001).This paper describes a method to control a size distribution index to a set point via the manipulation of the speed of the extractors that withdraw the ore from the stockpile feeding the grinding circuit. The paper consists of 4 sections. The first section describes the considered grinding circuit. A statistical analysis of the collected data on the grinding circuit is presented in the second section. This analysis demonstrates the necessity of using real-time adaptation mechanisms to develop a control strategy for the size distribution of a grinding circuit. The third section describes the method used to simulate the ore stockpile operation and the last section describes the preliminary development and assessment of a control strategy of size distribution of the ore feeding a SAG mill."

In this, the first systematic study of the oxidation of orpiment (As2S3) in sulfuric acid solution under oxygen pressure at temperatures above 170°C, the effects of retention time, temperature, particle size, oxygen partial pressure, the concentration of sulfuric acid and pulp density were evaluated. The effects of cupric and ferric ions on the oxidation rate of As(III) to As(V) were also examined. The products of oxidation are As(III), As(V), SO42- and elemental sulfur. At temperatures ranging from 170 to 230°C, most of the arsenic was found to be in the trivalent state, and oxidation to As(V) with oxygen was very slow. This was confirmed by attempting to oxidize a synthetic arsenious solution. However, the rate of oxidation of As(III) to As(V) is rapid in the presence of ferric ion. Elemental sulfur was found at all temperatures investigated, which can be further oxidized to sulfate at high temperature.

Drilling slurry has become an effective aid to the construction of drilled shafts in caving and/or waterbearing soils. Historically, drilling slurry made of bentonitic clay and water was first used in the US in water well drilling as early as 1889. In coastal Texas drilled shaft contractors began using slurry, often made of on-site clay mixed with potable water, in the years following World War II, on a relatively routine basis. This type of slurry was used to "process" boreholes, in which the borehole was drilled "in the dry" until water or unstable soil was encountered, after which water and on-site clay were introduced into the borehole and mixed in place with the auger or other drilling tool. Drilling then continued under a slurry consisting of the uncontrolled mixture of clay and water until the excavation had reached a relatively impermeable and cohesive material. At this point, a steel casing was dropped into the hole and sealed into the lower stratum of impermeable geomaterial (soil or rock). The slurry inside the casing was bailed or pumped out, drilling continued to plan depth in the dry, a reinforcing cage was set in the partially cased borehole, concrete was placed and the casing was withdrawn. Some soil-slurry was undoubtedly trapped between the casing and the borehole wall, but the quality of that slurry was usually of no concern, because engineers of the period usually viewed drilled shafts as nothing more than deeply buried footings. Any unejected slurry would only serve to lower side shearing resistance, not yet considered in design, but would have no effect on end bearing. Quantitative mineralogy is used in a study done on an Inco Metals Company nickel sulfide occurrence from 'the Thompson area in Northern Manitoba. The study included: a) determination of the variations in chemical composition of the ore minerals; b) determination of the liberation of the ore minerals for the various types of ore and for different feed grinds; c) assessment of the preliminary mill test results by comparing the mineral distribution in the different tailings. Preliminary mill test results had outlined three main problem areas: 1) unacceptabiy low grade concentrate with, 2) very high weight recovery and, 3) low pyrrhotite rejection resulting in a high sulfur concentrate. The mineralogical study readily explained these results by showing that: 1) between 20 and 40% of the nickel in the feeds and 55 and 75% of the nickel lost in the tailings is associated with pyrrhotite. This accounts in part for the low grade of the concentrates obtained at high recoveries: 2) hexagonal nonmagnetic pyrrhotite constitutes over 90 percent of pyrrhotite. Since hexagonal pyrrhotite floats more readily than monoclinic pyrrhotite, this could be part of the reason for the undesirable high pyrrhotite recoveries into the concentrates. Further test work to establish both the optimal grind and the best conditions for pyrrhotite rejection is therefore mandatory.

In recent years, the amount of ferritic stainless steel production has increased. However, the rust formation by the salt spray test was pointed out in the past. At the centre of the circular rust zone, pitting corrosion where water-soluble nonmetallic inclusions were embedded was observed. These inclusions originated from the suspended refining slag and consisted of multi-phase oxides and sulphides. By the experiments and thermodynamic consideration of the water-solubility, not only CaO or CaS, but also lime rich calcium-aluminates or calcium-silicates have shown large water-solubility. The composition of oxide phase in the inclusions was almost the same among the samples from molten steel, slab, or cold rolled sheet. On the contrary, CaS was clearly observed around the oxide in the sample of cold rolled sheet, although it was not found in the molten steel or slab samples. The enrichment of sulphur occurred from the desulphurization reaction of the suspended slag particles in the molten steel and also occurred from the diffusion of sulphur to the oxide inclusions during the heating of the slab. The optimization of refining slag composition has lead to produce the ferritic stainless steel without rust formation. THE TREND towards larger quantities of waste in materials handled at metal and nonmetal mines (excluding fuels) continued. A gain of 10 percent from 1962 in the tonnage of waste removed in mineral operations reflects the kind of technological problems being encountered. Technology has a major role in the mineral industry in the task of supplying raw materials obtained from resources occurring beneath the surface of the earth and used in manufacturing commodities essential to modern living. Changes in technology are often brought about by such factors as variations in economic conditions, differences in physical properties of raw material and changes in mineralogical compositions of ore. Mining is usually begun on the richest and most accessible of known deposits, and when these are exhausted, is continued with leaner ores or with less accessible deposits that are either lying at greater depths or are more remote from markets. The increasing difficulties of extraction and depletion of reserves are offset by improvements in extraction technology, improved transportation, and exploration for new deposits. Although depletion has prevailed at many individual mines and in many districts, technology has been the means of providing for increasing demands of an expanding economy with adequate supplies of minerals despite either the changing character or decreasing grade of certain ores. This has been accomplished by various methods applicable to minerals. Among the implements of technology are utilization of lower grade or more complex refractory ores by mass mining, concentration, processing, recovery of byproducts, and mechanization. Better methods to find concealed deposits or to penetrate to greater depths also have been helpful in maintaining a supply of particular minerals.

To solve the support stability control problem for a coal face with large angles along both strike and dip (CLSD), the ’support-surrounding rock’ mechanical model has been developed, which takes into account the impact of the dip angle of the seam on the stability of the support in the strike direction. The mechanical relationships of the critical topple angle and critical slip angle of the support along the strike of the coal face with large dip angle and the support height, support resistance, friction coefficient, and other factors have been derived through the mechanical analysis of support stability in the strike direction of CLSDs in the free state, the operating state, and the special state. The research findings were applied to a fully mechanized CLSD in Xinji Coal Mine. The maximum underhand angle and overhand angle in strike are 42° and 25° respectively, and the maximum dip is 39°. It is calculated that during underhand mining and overhand mining, the critical support resistances for avoiding support toppling are 3723 kN and 1714 kN respectively, and the critical support resistances for avoiding slipping of the support are 7405 kN and 6606 kN respectively. Thus, the selection of type ZZ7600/18/38 hydraulic roof support for the coal face is justified. Measures to prevent sliding of the support and the installation of a limiting stop maintain the support runs in good condition and ensure safe and efficient mining of CLSD.

The Asanko Gold Mine in Ghana started processing ore from the Nkran pit in January 2016 at a production nameplate of 3 Mt/a. The flowsheet is a conventional SAG, ball mill and pebble crusher (SABC) with gravity-gold and carbon-in-leach (CIL) recovery. The nameplate production was comfortably achieved within 3 months, so much so, that it was clear the SABC circuit was capable of processing more than the downstream section of the plant. Consequently, a program of de-bottlenecking was initiated to rectify volumetric capacity constraints. This program was later referred to as ‘Project 5 Million’ (t/a) or P5M. Having completed the de-bottlenecking exercise, it became evident that the SABC circuit could not reach 5 Mt/a solely on hard rock from Nkran. The new challenge was therefore to increase the capacity of the milling circuit through a focused comminution initiative that would address the following: geometallurgical treatment plan; upfront fragmentation requirements; installation of feed and mill monitoring equipment; and integration of a knowledge-based control strategy. This paper takes the reader through the various measures implemented to increase the milling rates and to create a stable/ sustainable control philosophy. A new test coke oven of 7 cu. ft. capacity is described. The oven was designed to simulate conditions in a central section of a battery oven and a special feature is the achievement of unidirectional heating from theflues on either side of the charge.The method of charging permits close control of charge conditions such as bulk density and moisture content.These conditions, as well as coking conditions (e.g. flue temperatures and coking time) must be varied to simulate conditions in different batteries. The effects of several variables on coke quality are discussed.Using test oven conditions corresponding to those of Newcastle steelworks batteries, good agreement was obtained between strength indices of test oven and battery cokes. For 17 tests, the average ASTM stability and hardness indices for the test oven coke were 38· 5 per cent and 69·7 per cent, while those for the battery coke were 37· 4 per cent and 67·6 per cent.Observed relationships between coke yield and productivity, and volatile matter and charge moisture are given.The use of a test oven to classify test coals into prime-, medium-, poor-, and non-coking coals is discussed.This may be achieved by observing the effects of the test coal in blends with other coals. The results of a series of blending tests are presented.The dangers of attempting to predict coke quality from a single coal property are pointed out, since this can be done only for very restricted ranges of coals.A diagram is given showing the established trends in the effects of blending various types of Australian coals on coke strength.

Upgrading of commercial red cake and recovery of vanadium oxide from uranium-vanadium mill solutions were investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Alternative procedures potentially useful for manufacture of high-quality vanadium oxide at the mill site were explored and developed. The simplest and best procedure for converting commercial red cake containing about 10 percent combined sodium and potassium oxides (Na20) (K20) into a 98- to 99-percent vanadium pentoxide (V205 product appeared to be a metathesis in an ammoniacal solution of ammonium sulfate. Molybdenum, as well as the alkali metal oxides, was removed from the red cake by this procedure at a modest expenditure of labor and reagents. When preparing vanadium oxide of higher grade, it was necessary to dissolve the red cake and reprecipitate the vanadium as ammonium metavanadate. Calcination at 450° C, decomposed the metavanadate and yielded oxide of about 99.5 percent V205. By recyrstallizing the metavanadate before decomposition, an oxide product approaching 99.9-percent purity was obtained.

Last month's engineering fundamentals article discussed some general considerations of underground mine ventilation. This month's article takes a look at auxiliary ventilation-brattice, fans, and ducting-in underground mines. The need for good, efficient auxiliary ventilation increases as mines get deeper and move farther from ventilation shafts. New mining methods and equipment resulted in faster work area advances, liberating more dust, gas, and heat. As a result, worker health and safety requirements in the face area have become more stringent. For all these reasons the safety and efficiency of any underground mine depends heavily on its auxiliary ventilation. The purpose of such ventilation is to supply sufficient quantities of clean air to the face of the drift and to maintain air quality within desired limits until expelled from the mine.

During the last 20 years, more than 80 km (50 miles) of tunnels have been constructed in the Los Angeles, CA area. Recent projects include The East Central Interceptor Sewer (ECIS), completed in 2004. It spans more than 18 km (11 miles). The Northeast Interceptor Sewer (NEIS), completed in 2005, spans 11 km (7 miles). And the 2-km (1.3-mile) Metropolitan Transportation Authority?s Gold Line Eastside Extension (MCGLEE) was completed in 2006. All of the tunnel routes lay beneath heavily populated urban environments so minimizing ground surface settlement was critical to the success of the projects. Previous tunneling efforts in the Los Angeles area using open shield methods resulted in significant settlement that damaged roads, utilities, buildings and other structures. Earth pressure balance (EPB), or slurry machines, were specified for these projects to reduce subsidence risk. The contractors chose EPB tunnel boring machines (TBM) for the work. The closed and pressured face of the EPB TBM reduces loss of ground at the tunnel face and, when the machines are used in combination with gasketed pre-cast tunnel liners and backfill grout behind the installed segments, losses from over-cut of the excavated surface are also reduced.

With the recent increase in environmental awareness, gold mining companies are fast becoming signatories of the International Cyanide Management Code (ICMI, 2007). The objective of the Code is to improve the management of cyanide used in gold mining and to assist in the protection of human health and the reduction of environmental impacts associated with the use of cyanide. In particular the code specifies the following cyanide concentration limits: 50 ppm WAD cyanide in a tailings storage facility, 0.5 ppm WAD cyanide for effluents, and 0.022 ppm free cyanide or 0.022 ppm WAD cyanide as surrogate in the post mixing zone of river discharge. Weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide refers to those cyanide species liberated at a moderate pH of 4.5, such as HCN(aq) and CN-, and the majority of Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag complexes with low dissociation constants. It is potentially toxic to humans and animals. Gold plants using cyanide should ideally measure WAD cyanide online and destroy WAD cyanide in excess of the applicable limits to ensure compliance with the Code. Mintek has recently developed an online WAD cyanide analyser (WAD Cynoprobe). The WAD cyanide analysis technique is based on the use of a ligand exchange reagent that liberates WAD cyanide bound to metals such as Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag. The ligand exchange reaction is represented by the following chemical equation: Metal(CN)X + yLigand ↔ Metal(Ligand)y + xCN- The plant filtrate is treated with a ligand exchange reagent, to liberate WAD cyanide, before measuring the free cyanide concentration via amperometry. The WAD Cynoprobe measures both free and WAD cyanide concentration. Its fast analysis time, approximately five minutes, makes it suitable for use in the control and optimisation of the cyanide destruction and recovery process. The instrument has proven accurate and reliable in the analysis of synthetic copper, nickel and zinc cyanide solutions made up in the laboratory as well as under industrial gold plant conditions during various trials. The WAD Cynoprobe has gained widespread commercial acceptance and is currently implemented on nine gold plants around the world.

This paper presents the results of pilot scale column flotation applications in the two different copper concentrators in Turkey. The Kure Copper Plant is located in the Black Sea Region of Turkey. In Kure, a very fine grinding requirement for an adequate level of liberation makes a successful flotation difficult and consequently the final concentrate can hardly assay above 16% Cu Column flotation tests were conducted at the plant site using two different column types The experiments proved that the grade of the concentrate could be increased from about 14% Cu to 25-26% Cu. Murgul Cakmakkaya Copper Concentrator is the largest copper concentrator in Turkey. Although concentrate production capacity is around 170,000 tons annually with 22-23% Cu content, this figure tends to be much lower than that. In Murgul a Turbo Column of Multotec Company of South Africa was employed. As a result of systematic column flotation tests, the grade of the concentrate was increased from 20.3% Cu to 28.7% Cu.

The burning sulphide ores in the Sullivan Mine generate sulphur dioxide gases. This paper is concerned with a description of the environmental impact of SO2 on air quality in the mine and on the surface in the vicinity of the mine. As a result of surface caving, SO2 has been able to vent to surface and winds have carried it into one residential area of Kimberley. Monitoring practices are described.

The Star mine, near Neihart, Cascade County, Mont., has been in continuous operation since the construction of a 50-ton bulk flotation mill in 1939. The mine was examined by G. N. Bennett, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in November 1942. At that time the life of the operation appeared to be limited and a program of crosscutting and core drilling were recommended. The program had as its objective the investigation of a promising undeveloped area lying west of the Star vein and, if possible, the development of enough reserves in this area to insure continuous operation during the war emergency. Development of additional reserves would then justify necessary changes in the mill in order to eliminate the heavy penalties imposed for excess zinc in the bulk concentrates. The Bureau of Mines work began in February 1944 and was completed in September 1944. The project was started by Wilder R. Brinton and continued by Thomas W. Oster, mining engineers in the Bureau's Montana district office. Beneficiation tests on are and concentrates were made after completion of the underground work. This report presents the factual data obtained during all phases of the Bureau's investigation.

"Abstract- The Ontario Geological Survey completed a regional till sampling project between 1984 and 1988 in the Black River Matheson (BRiM) area of northeastern Ontario. The project was designed to aid mineral exploration in the area by documenting the Quatemary stratigraphy and by providing a database of till geochemistry. This paper summarizes the results from the sonic overburden drilling component of the BRiM project carried out in areas of thick drift (> 5 m). Results from till sampling in areas of thinner drift (<5 m) have been presented in a separate paper. Approximately 1100 till samples were collected from 225 sonic drill holes. For each sample, the non-magnetic heavy mineral (> 3.3 S.G.) and fine (-250 mesh) till fractions were analyzed geochemically and visible gold grains were recovered by panning.Gold and other multielement geochemical data were plotted using proportional symbols to high­ light anomalous areas and to demonstrate how to evaluate and interpret a very large geochemical dataset. Thresholds for identifying anomalous concentrations of Au in till samples, defined using the 95th percentile, are 1500 ppb and 12 ppb for the heavy mineral and fine fractions, respectively. The heavy mineral fraction of older tills and to a lesser extent, Matheson Till, display a number of significant gold anomalies in the study area, which in a few cases, are associated with base metal anomalies. The vertical position of gold anomalies in Matheson and older tills varies from directly on bedrock to several meters above the bedrock surface and can provide information of relative ice transport distances."

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA), and the Alameda County Congestion Management Agency (Alameda CMA) are involved in a unique partnership on the planning and design of the fourth bore of the Caldecott Tunnel, located on State Route 24 in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. The project will add a two-lane bore north of the existing three bores. The project will alleviate traffic congestion in the non-peak direction. This paper provides background on the existing facility, summarizes the need for the new fourth bore, describes the proposed improvements, sets forth the approach for project delivery, and lists some of the challenges that are expected during construction.

Tunnel excavation while mining is not often performed in North America primarily due to access constraints in both operations. Referencing European approaches for long distance tunneling, the Devil?s Slide Tunnel project has applied innovation and technology to provide the ability to overcome this unique challenge. The Devil?s Slide Tunnel requires the construction of twin bore tunnels excavated based on sequential excavation method (SEM) construction methods using New Austrian Tunneling Methods (NATM) principles. The twin tunnels are approximately 9 m (30 ft) in diameter and 1,250 m (4,100 linear ft) in length. The purpose of this project is to reroute Route 1 from around the Devil?s Slide through the San Pedro Mountains crossing from Montara, CA along the south and into Pacifica, CA in the north. The Caltrans project was awarded in December 2006 for a total of $272,366,000. The job is an A+B job, thus the estimate scheme of final lining while tunnel excavation is important to save time. A+B is a method of rewarding a contractor for completing a project as quickly as possible. By providing a cost each working day, the contract combines the cost to perform the work (A) with the cost of impact to the public (B) to provide the lowest cost to the public. Concurrent mining while lining is achieved through a series of gantries and a set of tunnel forms allowing the pass-through of the excavation equipment. The tunnel lining operation passes through several phases of work that are dependent upon the progress of the tunnel excavation process. This involves unique milestones, such as the evolution of the ventilation system, development of an enlarged cross passage to allow equipment to access each tunnel from within the tunnel and, finally, the installation of an invert prior to arch lining that limits the continuity of the final lining operation.
