REMARKABLE as have been the direct results of Danks's puddler, there are some indirect and incidental results, which are well worthy of study for their intrinsic value and suggestiveness. The success of Danks's machine is due mainly to the nature of the lining and the manner in which it is attached to the walls of the revolving chamber. Herein lies Danks's merit and good fortune. Given such a lining, and the success of the machine, as far as puddling iron is concerned, could easily be predicted. Other important results have, however, been obtained with this machine, which, though clearly explicable, were, nevertheless, unanticipated. These are the increased yield of bar-iron over the pig-iron charged, and the elimination of phosphorus, which, though not absolutely complete, is yet more decided than in the case of hand-puddling. As regards the increased yield, this is merely what we have a right to expect if we consider the puddling process to consist in the oxidation of the carbon and silicon of the pig by the oxygen of the oxide of iron. That this result is attained, nearly to the extent that the theory requires, in Danks's puddler, and has never been more than partially attained by the most careful experiments in hand-puddling, points clearly to the fact that the contact of the molten pig-iron with the oxide of iron is much more intimate and complete in the one instance than in the other. The action of puddling in Danks's machine may be considered to be twofold first, the removal of the carbon, silicon, and phosphorus of the pig, which is the primary object, and, second, the production of wrought iron direct from the ore, which is entirely an incidental result. The Eskay Creek Mine is a high-grade gold and silver underground mine in northwestern British Columbia. The mine started operations in late1994. For the first three years, ore was crushed to -50 mm(-2 in.), blended to satisfy smelter terms and shipped to smelters in Japan and Canada. Preliminary evaluations indicated that a complex metallurgical facility, requiring a large capital investment, would be required to recover the precious and other economic metals. So markets for raw ore were identified and underground mining and ore transportation operations began at a production rate of 300 t/d (330stpd).

"A study has been conducted to characterize the fatigue life in 7050-T7451 thick plate by the comparison between an experimental alloy and commercial alloy. The fracture origins were specified and their sizes were measured by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Additionally, the size, number density and spatial distribution of porosity in the experimental material and commercial material were characterized and compared, using X-ray Computed Tomography(XCT). The results showed that microporosity was the predominant site for crack nucleation and subsequent failure of the experimental alloy. However, as for the commercial alloy, fatigue cracks were found to originate from constituent particles. The presence of microporosity in 7050-T7451 thick plate reduced fatigue life of an order of magnitude or more compared to the commercial alloy. The relationships between size of origin and fatigue life were proposed. It was showed that the fatigue endurance was reduced when the size of porosity increased.INTRODUCTION 7xxx series aluminum alloys, due to their combination of high strength, high resistance to stress corrosion cracking, and good fracture toughness, are widely used in structural engineering applications where high-strength and low-density characteristics are fundamental design requirements (Williams& Starke, 2003). Every designer is striving to find an optimal combination of properties including strength, corrosion resistance and fatigue resistance (Wanget al., 2016). Based on the design principles of aircraft, a higher fatigue resistance of aluminum alloys are required. Thus, many investigations have been carried out on the microstructures and its effect on fatigue properties of the 7xxx series aluminum alloy (Robson, 2004; Schubbe, 2009).Microporosity, which is a common defect in casting materials, can lead to a significant deterioration of mechanical performance and fatigue resistance, especially in the high alloyed 7xxx aluminum alloys. The actual valid loading area decreases due to microporosity, which results in detrimental effect on the mechanical properties. Many experimental studies have been conducted in this research field. Mayer et al.(2003) investigated the fatigue properties of magnesium alloys produced by high-pressure die-casting. The results show that porosity in magnesium alloys greater than0.18mm diameter may be considered as the most important material defect for high cycle fatigue and fully reversed loading conditions. Nadot et al.(2004) found that the near surface defects are much more dangerous than the internal defects. Wang et al.(2001a) used the Weibull statistics method to analysis the influence of the microporosity, oxides and particles on the A356-T6 alloy fatigue life. The results show that, the porosity is more detrimental to fatigue life than oxide films and particles. With regard to fatigue resistance, although the deleterious effect of microporosity has been generally acknowledged, a quantitative understanding between casting microporosity and fatigue life in 7050-T7451 plate is not well established."

Large-scale separation or flotation cells, used in the primary extraction in the oil sands industry, are integral parts of the overall process of bitumen extraction. Good regulation of the interface level between the bitumen froth and the middlings in these cells can result in a significant improvement in bitumen recovery and throughput, and heavily influence process economics. Automatic control of such industrial processes presents challenges such as multi-phase flow dynamics, variable process gain and time delays, poor quality of measurements and significant disturbances. This paper details a case study application of development of multiple models of the dynamics of the interface level and the design of model predictive controllers (MPC) for a separation cell process. A Model predictive controller (MPC) using linear models is designed and implemented in real time on an industrial separation cell. The industrial implementation results show that the MPC scheme provides significant benefits over the current operations which use a PID controller. The benefits include significant reduction in the variance of the interface level resulting in higher bitumen recovery and smoother downstream operation plus energy savings due to reduced underflow pump speed.

The traditional approach to safety clearance monitoring and proper PPE usage in underground mines is time-consuming, costly, and susceptible to negligence. However, automated real-time monitoring can be implemented using computer vision-based approaches. This study aims to develop a system that provides timely information based on the automatic detection of proper PPE use and safety clearance in underground mines. Deep learning and a decentralized computing structure between the cloud and sensing devices (fog technology) are used. We hypothesize that a camera-based system can provide near real-time assessment of proper PPE use and verified clearance to access restricted areas in underground mines.

"Abstract - Detailed mapping of the Eastern Gabbro, Coldwell Complex, Ontario, revealed that the copper and platinum-group-element deposit on the Marathon property is confined to a coarsegrained to pegmatitic gabbro-diorite intrusion, the Two Duck Lake intrusion (TDLI). Exposed along the eastern boundary of the Coldwell Complex, the TDLI was emplaced as a sill whose orientation is slightly oblique to the general structure of the Eastern Gabbro. The TDLI has been subdivided into lower, middle and upper sub-units on the bases of lithological, textural, mineralogical, and geochemical criteria. Both border sub-units are sulfide-, base- and precious metal-enriched, and exhibit abundant evidence of host-rock assimilation. The primary mineral assemblage in the TDLI is plagioclase, olivine, clinopyroxene, Fe-Ti oxides, with accessory orthopyroxene, biotite, apatite; this primary mineral assemblage is essentially preserved in the core of the intrusion (i.e., the middle subunit). The Cu-PGE Marathon deposit, delineated mainly in the upper sub-unit of the intrusion, consists of disseminated Fe-Cu-Ni sulfides, and platinum-group-minerals derived by hydrothermal remobilization from primary magmatic sulfides. Enrichment in Cu and PGE resulted from partial replacement of original Fe-Ti oxides and pyrrhotite in the primary mineral assemblage by reaction with (a) residual magmatic fluid, and (b) fluids derived from the breakdown of host rock xenoliths and hydrothermal alteration along the lower contact of the TDLI. Résumé - La cartographie détaillée de l’Eastern Gabbro, Complexe Coldwell, en Ontario, révèle que le gisement de cuivre et éléments du groupe du platine de Marathon est confiné à une intrusion gabbro-dioritique, de grain grossier à pegmatitique, l’intrusion Two Duck Lake (TDLI). Cette intrusion s’est mise en place sous la forme d’un filon-couche légèrement discordant sur la structure de la bordure orientale de l’Eastern Gabbro. On y distingue trois sous-unités, inférieure, centrale et supérieure, sur la base de zonations lithologique, minéralogique et géochimique. Les sous-unités marginales sont enrichies en sulfures, métaux usuels et précieux, et montrent de nombreux indices d’assimilation des roches hôtes. La paragenèse minérale primaire inclut le plagioclase, l’olivine, le clinopyroxène, les oxydes ferro-titanés et accessoirement et localement, l’orthopyroxène, la biotite et l’apatite : cet assemblage est surtout préservé au coeur de l’intrusion (sous-unité centrale). Le gisement de Cu-EGP de Marathon, situé principalement dans la sous-unité supérieure, comprend une minéralisation disséminées à sulfures de fer, cuivre, nickel, et minéraux du groupe du platine, dérivés de sulfures magmatiques primaires par remobilisation hydrothermale. L’enrichissement en Cu et EGP résulte du remplacement d’oxydes ferro-titanés primaires par réaction avec des fluides tardi-magmatiques, et des fluides assimilés le long de la bordure inférieure de l’intrusion, dérivés de la fusion partielle des xénolites et de remobilisations hydrothermales."

Yallourn brown coal and its characteristics have been the subject of innumerable papers and discussions. The Lurgi process adopted for the production of Towns gas by the gasification of brown coal has been described frequently in literature.The application of the Lurgi process for the gasification of Yallourn briquettes has naturally lead to some unexpected problems. Rather than attempt to review the whole field of experience gained in the first two years of operation of the gasification plant at Morwell, this paper attempts to describe two problems encountered, peculiar to the fuel used, and the steps taken in overcoming them.THE PROCESS AND PLANTTo clarify the conditions surrounding the problems, it is necessary to briefly describe the gasification and cooling processes and plant.Brown coal briquettes are gasified in a pressure generator, using a mixture of steam and oxygen as a gasifying medium. Crude gas produced in the generator is washed and cooled in the waste heat boiler and coolers. Figure 1 shows an arrangement of the generator and coolers. The gasifying medium enters the generator through a hollow shaft in the base. Alunite (KAl3(SO4)2(OH)6] is one of the important nonbauxitic resources for aluminum in U.S.A. The major gangue material associated with a unite ore body is quartz. Experimental results indicate that oleic acid flotation of alunite is quite effective in upgrading the ore. The flotation chemistry of the alunite/oleate system has been investigated using various techniques such as: hallimond tube flotation response, measurement of adsorption density using I4C labeled oleated, electrokinetic measurements, infrared spectral studies, contact angle measurements and thermochemical measurements using an isothermal microcalorimeter. Alunite has been found to float readily with oleate in the pH range 4-10.5 and its flotation response is enhanced at higher temperatures. The PZC of alunite has been determined to be at pH 7.2 ± 0.15 which agrees with what would be predicted from solution chemistry and from the flotation response with physically adsorbed collectors. Infrared spectra show a specific peak in the range 1585-1600 cm-1 which has been attributed to the formation of an aluminum oleate surface species. Both adsorption density measurements and infrared spectra indicate that during adsorption multilayers are formed. The heat of adsorption of oleate on alunite has been found to be endothermic and of the order of 4-6 KJ/ mole.

Hematite ore pellets require a much higher induration temperature than magnetite ore pellets because no exothermic heat is generated due to oxidation inside during induration-like magnetite pellets. Carbon is used as in situ heat source in hematite ore pellets which can reduce temperature requirement in the induration strand and hence decreases energy consumption. Many investigators have reported that a 0.8–1.25% addition of carbon in hematite pellets can improve the pellet properties also. However, to investigate the exact role of carbon in hematite pellets, its reaction mechanisms and kinetics study are required which have not been done so far. Therefore, the reaction mechanism and its kinetics have been studied in this investigation. It has been found that carbon reaction happens in pellets from the surface towards the center in a topochemical manner which is controlled by pore diffusion of gas, and its activation energy is around 52 k J mol− 1. It is also found that apart from in situ heat, carbon in hematite pellets enhances diffusion bonding which improves pellet properties. This study ascertains the exact role of carbon in hematite pellets which may help operators to use carbon effectively to reduce energy consumption and improve pellet properties.

In this study, a fuzzy logic self-tuning PID controller based on an improved disturbance observer is designed for control of the ball mill grinding circuit. The ball mill grinding circuit has vast applications in the mining, metallurgy, chemistry, pharmacy, and research laboratories; however, this system has some challenges. The grinding circuit is a multivariable system in which the high interaction between loops, the variation of the system parameters with time, and time delay are some of the problems that pose a challenge. Since the controller parameters are determined offline in classic PID control, these gains are unchangeable and cannot overcome the mentioned challenges in this system. Hence, a fuzzy logic self-tuning PID controller, which is a combination of fuzzy logic and a conventional PID controller, is proposed to control the grinding system, especially in the presence of model mismatch and disturbances. In addition, in order to solve the system challenges, a multivariable control approach based on an improved disturbance observer is proposed to suppress the effects of the disturbances. The most important feature of the algorithm proposed in this paper as the combination of fuzzy logic self-tuning PID and improved disturbance observer is its ability to eliminate system interaction, attenuate internal and external disturbances, and compensate the effect of system uncertainty on the performance of the ball mill grinding circuit. Simulation results in the cases of the set-point change in particle size and circulating load in the presence of model mismatch and external disturbances confirmed the controller performance compared to other controllers.

Significant advances have been made in the design of centrifugal slurry pumps that are used for pumping high-density viscous and paste slurries. This paper presents the results of a series of centrifugal pump performance tests that were conducted using an FLSmidth 6 x 4 Krebs millMAX centrifugal pump. The pump was fitted with a dry mechanical seal to prevent dilution of the slurry from gland service water, as the theology of the slurry is sensitive to small changes in slurry density. Tests were done using paste kaolin slurry with Bingham yield stress values between 578-1 120 Pa and plastic viscosities between 728 and 1491 mPa.s. The viscous properties of the paste during each pump test were measured using a rotational viscometer. Pump head and efficiency de-rating were measured and compared to the correlations of Walker and Goulas (1984). The test data shows the pump's best-efficiency point (BEP) changes and shifts to the left of the performance curve. The pump efficiency decreases as the slurry yield stress increases. The head de-rating data shows more head de-rating at the low flow rates compared to the high flow rates for the high viscosity slurry, which is in line with the findings of Walker and Goulas (1984). This paper demonstrates that it is possible to pump very viscous, high yield stress slurries with limited head and efficiency de-rating using centrifugal pumps, provided that positive suction conditions are maintained at all times.

The extraction of quartz from siliceous iron ores by dissolution in sodium hydroxide solution has been described in detail in AIME Transactions. l923 data reported covered the temperature range from 230-416°F, where a continuous increase in the amount of silica extracted with increase in temperature was found. It is the purpose of this paper to describe some unexpected results of more recent work exploring principally the range of 500600°F where higher rates and greater amounts of silica extraction were antici-p ted. In brief, the experimental procedure consists in digesting the ore under pressure in solutions of sodium hydroxide, filtering the suspension and weighing and analyzing the dried residue for iron content. The amount of extraction is calculated from the weight loss or from the iron analysis of the residue and that of the original ore.

A Discussion of the Paper by Mr. H. A. Guess, read at the Atlantic City meeting, February, 1904. MR. JOSEPH P. GAZZAM, Germiston, Transvaal, So. Africa (communication to the Secretary*) :-About fourteen years ago, in southeastern Missouri, I used a method for the wet determination of lead which closely resembles the modified sulphate-chromate method described by Mr. Guess. The principal difference, however, is, that after dissolving the lead chromate in hydrochloric acid, the chromic acid is determined by means of a standard solution of ferrous sulphate. The method, which I believe is still in use in southeastern Missouri, was found to be convenient and accurate for the determination of lead in the ores and various products of the mills and furnaces in that district, but it was never used for complex ores. A number of determinations of lead in mill-tailings were made in the year 1891; a few of these results are given in Table I.

To improve recoveries of Ni, Cu and Co in the Inco flash furnace, a new operating concept was investigated. By adding sufficient coke to form a supernatant coke layer, a reducing barrier would form allowing for improved reduction of descending oxidized sulfide mineral particles formed in the flame. The objective of this investigation was to study the kinetic mechanism and efficiency of the coke layer to produce a sulfur deficient matte. The mechanism and rate of carbon reduction of each of the phases formed in the flash flame, i.e. sulfides and oxysulfides were investigated by means of X-ray visualization tests. Graphite-slag reduction was also conducted for comparison purposes. In the case of slag, poor wettability and the formation of a gas film on the surface of the carbon reductant are often blamed for limiting the reaction surface area that ultimately results in poor reaction kinetics. The X-ray visualization tests confirmed that matte and oxysulfide wet coke better than slag and that the rates of reduction of matte and oxysulfide are faster than that of slag.

The extensive lead time to develop most Arizona copper deposits commenced with initial production efforts before the turn of the century, when the first attempts were made to recover gold and silver and later copper from the high-grade vein deposits of the territory. Each of these discoveries, prospects, and early operations had its own lead time and life cycle as economic production was attempted. Because prices of the metals fluctuated and the higher grade material was depleted, economics forced operations to close and companies to fail. Renewed interest in the property because of improved conditions, different interpretation of the geologic structure, or new promotional ability frequently resulted in the formation of yet another company to finance the exploration and, hopefully, the development of the property. This cycle of renewed activity and subsequent abandonment was and is common, accounting for many lead times and for the long period of time from the initial location of claims to large-scale production. In order to gain a perspective on the lead-time interval necessary to achieve development of a large-scale operation, the histories of several major Arizona mines were examined, rather than a simple listing of discovery and production dates of many mines to arrive at a statistical average. The Miami, Castle Dome, Copper Cities, San Manuel, and Twin Buttes properties were studied, and as much data as possible obtained on the Pinto Valley, Esperanza, Sierrita, Pima, and Mineral Park-Ithaca Peak properties.

Co-Cu exhibits a metastable miscibility gap in the region of the undercooled melt. Specimens have been undercooled and solidified containerlessly into the metastable miscibility gap in an electromagnetic levitation facility (EML) and in drop tube (DT) experiments. Due to the high undercooling the velocity of the solidification front is very high and the microstructure is frozen in instantaneously. The microstructure of samples processed in the EML is influenced by the electromagnetic stirring due to the induction of electrical currents into the melt. A variety of microstructures has been observed. After undercooling below the binodal the liquid melt separates into the Co-rich L1-phase and the Cu-rich L2-phase. Two basic morphologies of the L1-phase can be observed, they can be attributed to the transition in dendrite growth from diffusionally and thermally controlled to only thermally controlled growth. Transient microstructures are observed after solidification in the vicinity of the binodal. Drop tube experiments, which lead to a rapid solidification of a distribution of droplets under reduced gravity conditions, in contrary allow for the observation of the early stages of demixing: the microstructure shows a homogeneous distribution of spherical particles of the minority phase in the droplets. The cooling rate of the droplets and its dependence on the droplet radius has been calculated. The solidification velocity as a function of undercooling has been measured in the EML for the composition Co-lB.Bat%Cu. The data are analysed in the framework of the LKTlBCT model with a velocity-dependent distribution coefficient as well as within a model of Galenko and Danilov using a kinetic growth coefficient of u=0.22 m/Ks.

"Mine-derived sedimentation in rivers can have significant impacts on the processes and features of the receiving environment and impact on communities reliant on this environment. However, identifying and quantifying the contribution of mine-derived sediment to the receiving environment can be complex. This is particularly the case in remote environments and where little/no baseline assessments have been undertaken. One approach that can be used involves sediment fingerprinting, whereby a unique tracer is identified within the mine-derived sediment to discriminate between mine- and non-mine derived sediment sources downstream. The technique typically involves sampling of sediment at upstream, control and impact sites and sites within the mine deposit. Laboratory analyses are run on all the samples to determine whether the chemical signature (eg presence/concentration of specific metals) differs between each group of samples. In complex environments where the mine-derived signature may be difficult to detect from a basic review of the data, or where sampling constraints may limit the number of samples for analyses, statistical methods can be used to help identify sediment groups. Calaverite is a gold telluride found in the Kalgoorlie region, Fiji, Cripple Creek Colorado and numerous other locations. It is known that a high pH is necessary for calaverite cyanidation, with the leach rate increasing substantially above pH 12 due to the hydroxide ion concentration. In most circumstances lime is used to achieve high pH, however lime saturates at approximately pH 12, limiting the maximum pH obtainable in a critical region for calaverite leaching. Plant observations, laboratory experiments and thermodynamic modelling show that the maxi-mum hydroxide ion concentration that can be achieved with lime (CaO) is strongly dependent on common ions. The presence of calcium, as commonly found in saline waters, substantially diminishes the maximum pH that can be obtained with lime. Conversely the presence of sulfate ions, as generated through oxidation of sulfides, substantially increases the maximum pH that can be achieved with lime. Sulfide oxidation during cyanide leaching of complex ores may generate acid and sulfate ions, making overdosing with lime at the front of the circuit, or staged addition down the leach train, important to maintaining the maximum hydroxide concentration.

Even though there is always a feeling of anticipation before a blast is detonated, most blasts are part of a day’s work. Once in a while there is an event that impresses even the most jaded blaster. Few blasts have had the impact of the Kingdome implosion in March of this year. Fortunately for both the Seattle area and the explosives community, the “impact” of the implosion was far less than many local residents had feared. This outcome, of course, was not by chance, but the result of careful planning and design. An urban implosion requires a mix of engineering, logistics, and public relations. Unique challenges on this project tested the resourcefulness of the entire team.
