"Hatch and ArcelorMittal Mines Canada have combined their expertise to develop a dynamic model of the latter’s Iron Ore Pellet Plant in Quebec, Canada. This model was used to predict the benefits of different expansion projects, as well as asses the best implementation sequence.Two modelling tools were used: a discrete-event simulation software used to develop the dynamic model of the Pellet Plant and an in-house process simulator. The latter was based on operational data and known behavior of the process, and was calibrated with historical data gathered under different operating conditions.The results of the process simulator were used as input values for the dynamic model, which included all of the operation steps of the pelletizing process, from concentrate beneficiation to baking of the pellets. The model has been validated by assessing its capacity to represent adequately the operation of the plant during a 20-month operating period. It was able to reproduce the plant capacity within a precision of 1.2%.Simulated “what-if” scenarios allowed quantifying the production increase associated with the addition of new equipment such as ball mills or balling discs, implemented individually or in combination. Results revealed a potential 10% increase in the annual plant production by adding additional equipment in the two most limiting sectors of the plant, grinding and agglomeration. The simulation results made it possible to quantify the synergistic effect of two projects on plant throughput; the model showed that the combination of two projects resulted in a greater production increase than the sum of the same projects evaluated individually.Now that it has proven reliable, the simulation tool can readily be used by ArcelorMittal Mines Canada process engineers to perform simulations for equipment optimization, and to evaluate the impact of various operating parameters such as equipment availability and tonnage, product mix or concentrate quality. This work showed that a reliable model can be developed based on known parameters in combination with the proper integration of the process knowledge."

Formation of cementite in the reduction of hematite by CO–CO2 gas was studied in situ using high temperature XRD (HT XRD) analysis. Reduction of hematite was examined in the temperature range 873–1173 K by CO–CO2 gas mixture with high carbon activity. When carbon activity in the system was 1.5, cementite was formed only at 1023 K; it was not observed in experiments at 973, 1073 and 1123 K. Formation of cementite was observed at 923–1073 K when carbon activity increased to 3–5; and at 873 K when carbon activity was 10. Formation of cementite at 973–1073 K proceeded through metallic iron; however, in the reduction of hematite at 873 and 923 K, iron was not observed; cementite apparently was formed directly from wüstite. XRD spectra were used to estimate concentration of carbon in austenite in the process of cementite fromation.

The Cement Deep Soil Mixing (CDSM) method introduces and mixes cementitious materials with in situ soils using hollow-stem rotating shafts equipped with a cutting tool at the tip and mixing paddles above the tip. CDSM generally produces a soil-cement panel consisting of three overlapping soil-cement columns. The soil-cement panel is then extended to form walls, which are effective for excavation support and groundwater control due to the continuity and low permeability of soil-cement walls. Two design approaches could be taken in the application of CDSM for excavation support: 1) single wall design and 2) gravity wall design. The former one is treated as a wall technology and the latter one is treated as a soil stabilization method. This paper will review the CDSM equipment and installation procedures for the construction of these two types of soil-cement walls. Four case examples are used to illustrate the design and application of these two types of soil-cement walls.

The Kisladag Mine, Turkey, is a large porphyry gold deposit which is mined by open pit methods. In operation for over ten years, Kisladag provides an excellent example of how attention to a geologic feature, namely hydrothermal alteration, became a very effective predictive geological tool for planning and operation. The alteration domains were initially used as a geological tool to assist with establishment of resource model domains and to guide delineation drilling, but they were soon recognised to be correlative to geotechnical characteristics (affecting pit slope angles) and metallurgical performance (heap leach recoveries). Recent developments in spectral processing allow the systematic quantification of complex overlapping alteration phases and have greatly improved the ability to rapidly define internally consistent alteration domains for geotechnical and geometallurgical purposes.Alteration at Kisladag comprises a central core potassic (K-feldspar-biotite) zone, a tourmaline-white mica enveloping zone, an advanced argillic lithocap on the deposit’s eastern side and an overprinting pervasive argillic zone. These alteration zones and their distribution were based initially on strictly qualitative, visual mineralogical logging of diamond drill core. With the need for more accurate and consistent identification of the alteration mineral suites, particularly the phyllosilicate phases, logging was augmented by systematic measurement of spectral data using a Terraspec instrument.Recently the Kisladag spectral database (over 85 000 readings) was reprocessed by the newly developed methodology (aiSIRIS™) that allows relative quantification of the spectrally-responsive minerals. Visualising this transformed spectral mineralogy at various mineral concentration thresholds using implicit modelling software (Leapfrog®) led to the creation of consistent mineralogical and alteration domains that are used for the definition of geotechnical and geometallurgical parameters. "Coal mining in India has a strategic importance for the energy security of the country. Presently, the majority of coal production is coming from open-cast mining. Due to the fast depletion of reserves amenable to open-cast mining, future coal production will depend primarily on underground production. In conventional bard-and-pillar/room and pillar mining as it is practiced in India, the percentage of extraction is very low. In fact, within most Indian coalfields, a large number of coal seams extract only 15- 20% of coal, but no pillar extraction is done due to the presence of surface or sub-surface structures leading to huge amount of coal being locked-up in underground. Spontaneous heating and fire, the accumulation of poisonous gases, severe stability issues, unsafe workings and environmental hazards are all major problems associated with these developed coal pillars, so there is a pressing need for technology in the mining industry to extract this huge amount of coal locked up under different constraints. In this study, we propose that the locked-up coal be extracted by replacing the developed coal pillars with artificial pillars. The paper briefly discusses the extraction methodology designed for this and its evaluation through numerical modeling for applied suitability underground.INTRODUCTIONDriven by rising populations and urbanization, an expanding economy and also a quest for improved quality of life, energy usage in India is expected to increase manifold in the coming years. As for India's energy scenario and its projected future plans, there is no doubt that coal will remain a prime source of energy, even over the next few decades.The majority of coal production in India comes from open-cast mining because of large-scale mechanization, but the coal reserves amenable to open-cast mining are gradually depleting - which may impose adverse impacts on the energy sector if underground production does not increase. Underground coal extraction, meanwhile, is going to become more complicated in near future due to the fast exhaustion of easily mineable coal reserves."

Conditions in the South African market relating to atmospheric emission control has changed dramatically over the last 10 years. Companies have become more responsible, environmentally aware, and have to comply to more stringent environmental limits set by legislation. This paper describes briefly the current best available atmospheric pollution abatement technologies relating to particulates, acid gases, NOx, acid mists, aerosols, mercury, dioxins and furans. Mention is also made as to the best practices for product work-up and waste product disposal.

A suite of specimens from the newly developed Black Star copper ore body at Mount Isa was made available for mineragraphic study by the Mount Isa Mines, Ltd. The specimens were selected as representative of the different phases of mineralisation found in the ore body, rather than with a view to furnishing a complete cross-section of it; and the examination has been carried out with a view to ascertaining (1) the nature, extent and association of the arsenic, antimony and possibly bismuth, minerals in the ore, (2) the mode of occurrence of silver in the ore, and (3) whether galena and sphalerite occur in minute forms well below the sIzes readily observed in hand specimens.Analyses of the January to June, 1944, mill head composites show that the proportions of the elements Ag, As, Sb and Bi in the ore are as follows:Ag 0.000013 = 0.35 oz./tonAs 0.024Sb 0:002Bi 0.0005The copper content of the mill heads ranges from 3.5% to 4.75%, the lead content from 0.03% to 0.08,% and the zinc content from 0.09% to 0.23%.MINERAL COMPOSITIONThe specimens range from massive sulphide ore, consisting of areas of chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, and rarely sphalerite, from 1 to 3 cm. across, to fragments of extremely finely banded pyritic shale in which no minerals other than pyrite are visible. The gangue associated with the massive sulphides is chiefly dolomite, and sometimes white quartz. The pyritic shale fragments show evidence of shearing and faulting on a micro-scale, the fractures sometimes being filled with sulphides and vein minerals.The ore minerals found in the polished sections are pyrite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, valleriite, chalcostibite, galena, dyscrasite, jamesonite, magnetite, gold, graphite and rutile.Pyrite (FeS2)Pyrite occurs chiefly in two forms according to whether deposition took place along the bedding planes or along the intersecting faults and fractures. The acceptable rate of rise of the tailings beaches on upstream-raised tailings storage facilities (TSFs) is critical to life of mine planning. This is illustrated through a case study in Western Australia presented in this paper. Accurate estimates of expected beach slopes, the maximum rate of rise at which the tailings can be placed, and the dry density that the tailings solids will achieve after deposition (stored density) are required in order to design TSFs that will allow upstream raises to be constructed safely and economically. Where operations have been occurring for some time, these three parameters are able to be measured and can be well-defined. If process plant throughputs are proposed to increase through mine expansion, for example, increasing the rate of rise of the tailings can compromise the potential for upstream TSF raising, thus influencing the viability of such an expansion, the timing for its implementation, and significantly increase costs.This paper outlines how rate of rise can be a key constraint, and that ‘rules of thumb’ that are typically applied may not result in the outcomes they were meant to achieve. An example of an experimental method to justify an increase to the ‘rule of thumb’ ~2.5 m/year limit for gold tailings in a semi-arid climatic setting is discussed, followed by rate of rise modelling that ultimately framed the decision-making process for a mine expansion. The rate of rise modelling method was adopted to carefully distribute tailings deposition across four TSFs, comprising nine separate tailings cells, in order to maintain appropriate rates of rise. The implications resulting from various deposition splits are presented, including the need for expansion. In addition, this paper outlines the effect of rate of rise on the state (density) of the tailings after deposition, and provides commentary on how anecdotally acceptable rates of rise, based on the aforementioned ‘rule of thumb’ of 2.5 m/year may not provide assurance of geotechnical stability through the tailings achieving a dilative state, as has been thought in the past. An example of the influence of rate of rise on the state of the tailings, with respect to air-drying and the critical state line (CSL) for the material, is presented. The data indicate that reducing the rate of rise may allow a higher dry density to be achieved through air-drying (evaporative desiccation), sufficient to move the material from the contractive to the dilative zone (i.e. from above the CSL, to sufficiently below it).CITATION:Chapman, P J and Williams, D A, 2018. Australian underground mines produce in excess of 60 mtpa of coal. Most of these use the longwall method, and they require the use permitted explosives (which are called “permissible” in other countries) for challenges that appear during the day-to-day activities. To obtain the approval for these explosives, they should pass Testing Memorandum #2 (TM-2), which sets out the test required for each category of permitted explosive. These categories are P1, P3, and P5. With P5 being unrestricted use and P3 and P1 have conditional use in underground mines. The TM-2 test was originally set up for NG-based permitted products around 1900. With the closing of NG plants around the world, ammonium nitrate explosives were the natural replacement, and therefore these explosives need to pass the TM2. Australia does have a P1-emulsion based explosive available. For high-risk scenarios (like blasting coal), no P5 explosives are available. The lack of P5 explosives has been prolonged for more than 25 years, since the phasing out of nitroglycerine-based permitted explosive products around the world. The main problem has been that when emulsion based permitted products are tested in the deflagration cannon, the results obtained were not considered in the TM2 criteria and therefore the tests were invalid. A research work on permitted explosives began in 2005 funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP). The aim of the project was to address the lack of P5-type permitted explosive (and, potentially develop them further, i.e., develop safer explosives) and understand the behaviour of emulsion explosive and the results they presented in the tests. Both bureaucratic and technical barriers appeared along the way. On the bureaucracy side, the facility was shut down, reopened, and shut down again. In view of these difficulties, assistance was sought overseas. On the technical side, from the very start the results of the tests when using emulsion-based permitted explosives were not established in the criteria, ignitions occurred for trial samples that were expected to be P5-type, etc. The aim of this document is to present the painful journey in the Australian industry to have a P5-type emulsion-based permitted explosive, for use in UG coal. Also, the technical learning acquired about emulsion explosives and the ignition path of mixtures methane / air will be shown.

Mining investment decisions are difficult since decision analysis is often based on scarce information. The sources of uncertainty in large mining investment projects are particularly numerous and are present in all evaluation stages. Hence the feasibility decision for projects of this nature will largely depend on how well these sources of uncertainty are managed to achieve bankable risk levels. The risk associated to the construction stages of a mining project is particularly difficult to quantify, mainly because the large number of variables affecting constructive yields, and the complex interactions among constructive resources. This investigation focuses on developing quantitative simulation models and tools to increase the value of a mining project by means of an optimization of the preproduction equipment fleet. The models were validated through their application in the Chuquicamata Underground Mining Project.

JoughinMr Turgay Gurun, in presenting his paper, indicated that this simulator was no purely theoretical exercise, but that the model had been used in the design of crushing plants of capacities ranging from 3 000 tons per day to 66 000 tons per day, and that recently the design of a plant of capacity of 99 000 tons per day had been studied.The crushing plant simulator was an independent portion of a much more comprehensive simulator for the design of a. complete recovery plant. It would be possible to use each section of this simulator on its own, and simulators would be designed to cover flotation concentrates, cash flow analyses of the entire project, and so on.Each simulator would be backed by a comprehensive data bank. For example, the crushing plant simulator was backed by such a data bank which included the performance and cost data from five manufacturers for an average of 30 items of process and materials handling equipment each. This meant that data preparation involved generally less work than would be required for a manual calculation. On average, data preparation for one run took 30 minutes and three minutes of computer time on an IBM 360/40 completed the run. The model could be valuable as a design tool in that it allowed the designers an opportunity to make a thorough examination of many alternative designs. It was also of value to plant operators as it could be used to predict the consequences of operating decisions.This paper generated much interest and there were numerous questions and contributions, so many, in fact, that the discussion had to be cut short.It was pointed out by Mr K. F. Lane that crushing plants represented a very large capital investment. A plant designed for 40 000 tons per day at 98 per cent efficiency might well in practice be run at 50 000 tons per day at, say, 83 per cent efficiency. He asked how, therefore, their design could be investigated without building economic criteria into the model? The author conceded that this was a tender point. He would have liked to have given facilities for more variability of the metallurgical information. He pointed out, however, that while there was no overdesign for conservatism built into his system, some overdesign was inevitable as the performance characteristics given by the manufacturers were generally conservative. Also, in his system, if lower recovery was allowed for, the system would nut through more tonnage."

A high calcium fluid-bed combustor ash has been shown to be an effective binder at dosages of 1 to 2% of the magnetite concentrate weight. Magnetite pellets 1.3 cm (1/2 inch) in diameter were produced with dry crushing strengths greater than 22.3 Newtons/pellet (5.0 pounds force/pellet), which is comparable to the results produced using conventional bentonite binder. The effectiveness of fly-ash-based binders was considerably improved when calcium chloride was added as an accelerator. Addition of calcium chloride at a rate of 0.1 to 0.2% of the total powder weight increased the strength of dried pellets by as much as 22% compared to the strength of pellets made using fly-ash without accelerators.

"INTRODUCTION Santiago de Chile is a 7 million inhabitant city which has a 103 Km long subway network operated since 1975 by Metro S.A. This network is used on a daily basis by 2.3 million people. In 2012 Metro S.A. started the biggest enlargement of the network in its history, through the design and construction of the new Line 3 (21.7 Km) and Line 6 (16.5 Km). The detailed engineering contract for civil underground works of Line 6 (L6) was awarded to the Consortium integrated by ZAÑARTU Ingenieros Consultores and GEOCONTROL S.A., in which Geocontrol was in charge of the design of 11 stations and 14.5 Km of tunnel. L6 crosses L3 in Ñuble and Ñuñoa Station, L2 at Franklin Station and ends, intersecting L1, at Los Leones Station as shown in Figure 1. LOS LEONES STATION DESIGN Location and Characteristics Los Leones Station is placed at the North end of the L6, next to the same named station of the L1 and it has four construction units, as is shown in Figure 2: I. Access Shaft (49 m x 47 m). II. Access Gallery (34 m long). III. Station Tunnel (120 m long). IV. Connection Gallery with L1 (104 m long). A singular feature of Los Leones is that the western section of the station tunnel, built from the access gallery, is located below an underground parking lot which is located in Providencia Avenue, as shown in Figure 3. It is important to highlight that the distance between the vault of Los Leones Station Tunnel and the foundations of the underground parking lot is only 6 m."

The Chambers Creek Interceptor Sewer Tunnel project consisted of 2-1/2 miles (4 kilometres) of nominal 9-foot (2.7-metre) O.D. tunnel driven through predominantly glacially overridden soils. Mole-Collucio Construction Company initially elected to drive the entire tunnel with a Lovat TBM. However, this machine could not control the fast raveling ground conditions which developed when the TBM encountered sands overlying very dense, hard glacial till or boulders. As a result, a shield and digger machine was brought in for a 1700-foot (518-metre) long segment. Pumped wells spaced roughly 50 to 125 feet (15 to 38 metres) apart were utilized to dewater about two-thirds of the alignment during construction. Initial support consisted of steel ribs and wood lagging, with a final lining comprised of pre-cast concrete pipe segments grouted in place.

Poor coal recovery due to coal damage or loss caused by blasting can have a significant impact on a mining operation. Increasing coal recovery by reducing blast damage can provide a significant opportunity for coal mines to maximise their revenue and reduce their operating costs. This paper provides details on advanced drilling and blasting techniques used throughout the coal industry globally to prevent coal damage and movement during blasting. Typical coal loss and damage mechanisms are explained, along with how each of the applied techniques works to minimise the impact of each mechanism. Key requirements for a coal loss reduction program are detailed with typical design parameters used for each of the methods discussed. The positives and negatives of each method are also provided to enable comparisons and help determine suitability for a particular coal mining operation.

The Big Jim mine of the United Eastern Mining Co. is at Oatman, Mohave County, Ariz. Oatman is in the foothills on the western side of the Black Mountains, at an elevation of about 3,000 feet. It is on a paved highway about 30 miles west of Kingman, the principal distributing; center for mining supplies in the district, and 25 miles from Topock, en the Colorado River. Both latter towns are stations on the Santa Fe Railroad; Oatman has no roil connection. Mining conditions are typical of western Arizona; water is scarce, no mine timber is available locally, and the winters arc mild and the summers hot. The supply of a killed labor is usually adequate, but in 1933-34 it w not more than sufficient for the restricted operations. Wages have been $4.00 to $4.50 for miners. Electric power was supplied from Kingman and cost about 2.6 cents per kilowatt-hour.

The areas of concern lay in the processing of, and the subsequent hearing into, Waihi Gold's resource consent applications to extend Martha Mine. The proposed amendments to the Resource Management Act 1991 might see the introduction of contestability in the processing of applications - which would have assisted Waihi Gold; and the use of commissioners to hear the applications, with a right of appeal to the Environment Court on points of law only. It is also proposed to have major applications heard directly by the Environment Court. If Waihi Gold's applications had been heard at first instance by the Court, the delays in time and associated costs would have been reduced. However a hearing by commissioners only would not have been satisfactory, there being no right of appeal against the conditions of consent, which if implemented as granted by the Councils would have had a significant impact on the costs associated with the extended project.

The Southern African region contains abundant gold tailing heaps that are an environmental concern due to dust pollution and chemical contamination of nearby water bodies. Nevertheless, these heaps contain gold with potential to be extracted for financial gain. In this study, the feasibility of extraction of gold from a Witwatersrand gold tailings using glycine was investigated using a two-level full factorial design. Effects of variables such as glycine concentration at levels of 0.5–1.5 M with a solid–liquid ratio of 50–200 g/L were investigated. Although the solid–liquid ratio used in this study was below the industrial norm, it provides a starting point for investigating the applicability of this technology. To enhance the gold extraction, potassium permanganate pretreatment and copper ion addition were adopted. The results revealed that 91.4% gold extraction was achieved after 24 h pre-treatment of the tailings using 2 g/L potassium permanganate followed by subsequent leaching using 1.5 M glycine at pH 12, with 50 g/L solid–liquid ratio and 2 g/L copper ions. Statistically, the solid–liquid ratio and potassium permanganate pre-treatment of the tailings were found to be significant at 95% confidence interval, whilst interactions of copper ions and glycine concentration were significant factors. The work demonstrates that potassium permanganate pre-treatment prior to glycine leaching of low-grade secondary gold resources, such as tailings, can be beneficial. Furthermore, the methodology developed in this work provides an opportunity for further investigation of the recovery of gold hosted in complex mineralogical matrices.
