The realization that there is a limit to our supply of domestic mineral and fuel resources, which have been taken for granted until recently, has stimulated the need for conservation and optimum utilization of the Nation's minerals, metals, and fuels-resources critical to our national economy. The mission of the Bureau of Mines is to develop new technology, improve existing technology, and disseminate information related to mineral resources and industries. Fulfilling the mission is necessary to insure a continuing, adequate supply of minerals and alternative supplies of energy from reliable sources at the lowest possible cost to society and the environment. Established in 1910, the Bureau of Mines under the Department of the Interior is the Federal Government's primary research arm in the mineral field. Since the transfer of the fossil fuels portion of the energy research program to the newly organized Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) in fiscal year 1975, Bureau research has been concentrated on increasing mineral production, decreasing energy usage through more efficient processing, and decreasing material losses caused by corrosion. Concurrently, research is being addressed to improved coal-preparation techniques, especially to expanding utilization of low-grade coals and coals difficult to beneficiate, which are essential for reducing the need for petroleum and natural gas supplies and for redirecting our energy consumption. Fluctuations in the availability of foreign sources of minerals, metals, and fuels due to political and economic variability among nations have necessitated intensified investigation into coal mining, uranium-ore processing, and geothermal energy sources-three alternatives that can help to alleviate the dependence of the United States on foreign sources of energy.

Volatilization in retorts has been, until recently, the only commercial process of producing spelter, hence the zinc mine operators have had to meet the terms of the zinc smelters in regard to the following requirements: (1) Minimum percentage of zinc the ore must contain; (2) the chemical combination of the zinc in the ore; (3) the proportion present of those elements that interfere with the suceessful recovery of the zinc when the ore is retorted. In consequence of these requirements, only a comparatively small proportion of the zinc ores mined can be shipped directly to the smelters.

"INTRODUCTION The investigation of domestic talcs by the United States Department of the Interior Bureau of Mines, was initiated in December 1941 at the request Gen. Charles Hines of the United States Army. The urgency for such study was expressed by General Hines as follows:The radio-manufacturing industry has recently been expanded by the Army to provide sufficient, capacity for defense needs, and considerable concern has been expressed by the supply Arms and Services over maintaining continued availability of supplies of the necessary raw material. These ceramic products are used by the Signal Cores in all Army radio equipment, and to a greater degree in the new special ultra-high-frequency equipment. The Air Corps has recently become a user large amounts of radio-grade ceramics for aircraft spark-plug covers required for high-altitude operations. In addition, the use of this material is essential to the proper functioning of the radio-navigation aids of the Civil Aeronautics Board.Progress in the Bureau of Mines studies on talc was made available to representatives of the Army and Navy through frequent interim reports. Through the efforts of the several war agencies concerned with raw-materials supply and the domestic talc producers, the condition of scarcity that developed in 1942 passed to one of ease in 1943, and has so continued to date. Tentative estimate of reserves delineated indicates a supply of high-grade steatite sufficient to meet military war requirements for at least 4 or 5 years."

In 1969, new coal mine health and safety legislation was enacted in the United States. As a result of this legislation, the Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines has carried out communications research aimed at developing whole mine communications for increased safety and efficient operation. The research has advanced and many promising results are now being demonstrated to the mining industry. However, there remains a challenge to further improve wireless communications within the mine workings and through the overburden above the workings. The objectives for future research and development will be discussed, together with the physical and operational constraints that new mine communication systems must face.

The use of iron powder during the postwar conversion period has been increasing with great rapidity. This is particularly true in regard to the manufacture of molded mechanical parts such as bushings, gears, cams, small wheels, and the like. Many manufacturers have found it possible to replace machined cast iron and carbon steel with molded iron powder parts, and thereby can not only effect a savings in cost, but can produce a better product as well. As the field of application for iron powder parts widens, greater demands are made upon the powder supplier concerning quality and uniformity characteristics. The following are some of the most important properties parts fabricators desire in the iron powder they use: 1. The powder should have high compressibility so that good density can be obtained without the use of excessive pressures. At the same time, it should show low die wear so that a large number of pieces can be produced from the die. This means that the powder must be of high purity and good softness or plasticity. 2. The powder should produce compacts of high green strength, so that unsintered parts can be handled without breakage or fraying of the edges. 3. The sintering properties should be good so that satisfactory strength is obtained in the sintered piece. 4. Compacts made from the powder should show small but, above all, uniform dimensional changes during the sintering operation so that accurate parts can be produced, and warping and other such bad effects eliminated. 5. The powder should have satisfactory flow properties for automatic molding. 6. It is very important that the powder be uniform in sieve analysis, compressibility, flow, purity, and other qualities, from container to container in any given lot and from shipment to shipment. 7. Price—The fabricators desire all these good properties, but in many instances still do not wish to pay a premium price. There has been considerable discussion as to the importance of price of the powder in relation to the cost of the finished product. It is true that in cases where certain special properties only procured by powder metallurgy are required, price is not a criterion. On the other hand, there have been a number of applications recently made which would not be commercially practical with a powder which commands a premium in price. The powder is compressed to a density figure dependent upon the function the part is to perform, as well as upon such important considerations as press capacity and die wear. This paper is intended to call attention to the manifold uses of limestone in industry; to indicate the types of limestone desired by some of the large consuming industries; and to give some information on the resources of limestone in Canada, so that an idea may be obtained of the present and future possibilities for limestone production. The word limestone is used in the usual broad sense to include both high-calcium limestone and the highly magnesian variety known as dolomite, as well as all intermediate types. Lime is simply calcined limestone, and in this general paper its uses have been included with those of raw limestone. It is of interest, in dealing with this subject, to glance back over the early history of the utilization of limestone, for by so doing we see that limestone has been of importance to mankind since the beginning of civilization and has contributed in no small measure to the development of a number of the arts and sciences. One of the first uses, if not the first use, of limestone was in connection with the making of lime for plastering purposes. This use antedates civilization. In the day of the ancient Greeks and Romans, the art of plastering had been brought to a state of perfection that is not nearly approached by the modern artisan.

The field meetings of, the 1nstitute are cine of its pleasantest and most valuable features. As Dr. Raymond used to say, ((It is good for a mining engineer once in a while to see a mine" and these meetings bring back to the mines those who, through progress into higher executive positions, have come to visit them infrequently, at the same time that they give opportunity for the .younger men to see regions and mines aside from those in which they are then working. This, and the formal and' informal interchange of information resulting,, is of the greatest professional value to all, while the meeting of old and making of new friends causes each meeting to be notable in turn. This year's meeting at Salt Lake City was one of the largest that has been held outside of. New York City; 470 members and guests registered while many more were present at the sessions without attending to this formality. '

"Nickel saprolite ores are normally mined as feed to Fe-Ni smelters or Ni matte smelting operations. The smelting processes typically require high Ni cut-off grades of approximately 1.5 to 2.2% Ni, depending on the operation. These very high cut-off grades result in a significant portion of the saprolite profile being regarded as “waste” and hence having little to no value. The Starved Acid Leach Technology (SALT) was developed to recover nickel and cobalt from nickel saprolites and Caron plant residues. Relatively small amounts of acid are applied to ground saprolites or Caron residues in order to selectively leach nickel and cobalt. The leaching is performed atmospherically under low free acid conditions. Nickel and cobalt may be recovered from the leachate as a mixed hydroxide. The mixed hydroxide may be added directly to a saprolite smelting operation or refined separately. InCoR Technologies is advancing the application of SALT at a number of sites. Bench scale testing has provided a relationship between acid addition and nickel extraction in leaching. Conceptual engineering studies have been completed by SNC Lavalin. The simplicity of the SALT technology provides the benefits of low capital and operating cost and an expected rapid ramp up to full production.INTRODUCTION The recent history of hydrometallurgical nickel laterite treatment plants has demonstrated mixed financial and operational performance. Table 1 summarizes the next generation plants built after the financial and/or technical failure of the Bulong, Cawse and Murrin-Murrin plants in Australia. The Coral Bay plants (Line 1 and 2) stand out (and now Taganito) as relatively low capital cost, simple (no acid plant, production of mixed sulfide product), and modest in scale (10, 12 and 36 kt Ni/a). However, the other plants in the list (Ravensthorpe, Ramu, Goro and Ambatovy) are all characterized by financial and technical challenges. All plants have a very high capital cost ($67,000 to $120,000 USD/annual t of Ni production). Ravensthorpe was sold by BHP Billiton after a poor startup. Ramu has had a steady ramp up but only produces mixed hydroxide for refining by others. Goro has had an extended construction period (since 2001), is high cost and has been very slow to ramp up to design production rates. Ambatovy has had a steady ramp up."

The two components of pillar design formula being used in South Africa are pillar strength and pillar load. While considerable effort has been directed to the determination of pillar strength, the other half of the safety factor equation, the load, has not received the same amount of attention. The load acting on pillars has always been calculated using the Tributary Area Theory (TAT). This paper summarises the recent studies on coal pillar loading using various numerical models. It concludes that although there are meaningful differences under certain circumstances, there is still a compelling argument to use the TAT in coal pillar design. Zeolites were first recognized as a new group of minerals by Cronstedt with the discovery of stilbite in 1756. The word zeolite was coined from the two Greek words meaning "to boil" and "a stone" because of the loss of water when heated in the mineralogist's blow pipe. (1) In 1845 it was discovered that certain soils have the power of retaining ammonium Salts. (2) These were the first ion exchange experiments. Later it was discovered that it was the hydrated silicates in the soil that produced this phenomenon and several years later a paper was published dealing with the action of dilute salt solutions on silicates which showed that this base exchange principal, which we now call cation exchange, is reversible. The quantitative cation exchange behavior of zeolite minerals, such as chabazite, was studied. As a result any aluminosilicate which exhibited the property of ion exchange was referred to as a "zeolite;" even today the term has been applied to clay minerals as well as synthetic organic ion exchange resins.

With lower and increasingly variable Fe grades in iron ore resources, the monitoring of Si, Al, Mg and other light elements to meet quality requirements is gaining importance in the iron ore beneficiation industry. The high cost per manual assay and associated manpower requirements often limit the frequency of shift composite samples and laboratory assays. Furthermore, the shift composite assays represent past performance of a plant but are not useful for immediate reactions to feed variations, detection of equipment malfunctions or process control. Automated online analysis of light elements radically reduces the cost per assay and provides repeatable, timely data for process analysis, control and optimisation.A light element online slurry analyser, based on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) optical emission technique, will be presented. This paper discusses the analyser design for the iron ore industry and also reviews the performance of the analyser against the manual laboratory. Additionally operator safety, user friendliness and maintenance requirements are discussed.A case study will also be discussed in this paper. The sophisticated measurement technique has been implemented in an industrial automated analyser and sampling system to allow for slurry measurement for up to 12 sampling points. Since the days of Adam Smith and Milton Friedman the discussion of corporate citizenship and sustainability has been flooded with multiple contradictions, with proponents of sustainability saying that it is a crucial cog in the business strategy, while those against, maintain that æthe business of business is businessÆ and therefore sustainability issues are just add-ons. Sustainability arises from a deeply held vision by corporate leaders that businesses can and should play a role beyond just making money. Businesses should embrace the understanding that everything that a company does has an impact both internally and externally (communities, employees and customers), and the natural environment. This paper highlights the approach that led to a view that there is a contradiction between profitability, sustainability and community development, and we provide a further argument to the contrary. This argument is based on a comprehensive literature review of over three decades by various scholars linking corporate social performance and corporate financial performance. Driefontein Gold MineÆs approach is that of linking the community development, natural environmental and employee well-being initiatives and projects to the mineÆs business strategy. The paper further highlights the coordination and implementation mechanism of sustainability at the mine where the accountability lies with the head of the mine operations. A two pronged approach is employed where there is an internal dialogue on sustainability between the various departments coordinated by the sustainable development department and an external tri-sector partnership with local government, interested and affected parties and the mine. These approaches are closely linked to the contributions towards the mineÆs financial bottom line.

The application of manganese in iron and steel metallurgy is very inter¬ esting historically. In general, ancient- irons and steels contained virtu¬ ally no manganese, probably because the available iron ores contained■only small amounts of the manganese oxides. Occasionally, samples of ancient irons were found to have appreciable amounts of manganese, but their presence is considered accidental and dependent upon the ore available to craftsmen of that time. Two specimens of iron (139;— made in 500 A.D. contained .negligible quantities of manganese. A sample of steel which constituted the base of .the Khan Baba pillar in India was probably processed in 12p B. C. by the1 cementa¬ tion of wrought iron. This material; contained 0.02 percent manganese and 0.70 percent carbon (20) . One Damascus-steel sword forged some time between 11'60 ' and l400 A. D. was found to contain 0.1^-i percent manganese and 0.j6l percent carbon. The manganese content of this bla.de was much higher than that of any other material of this type which has been analysed. In every other instance the manganese content was below 0.02 percent. A cast steel manufactured by the East India. Co. in India in the early nineteenth century, under the name of Wootz steel, contained rather appreciable amounts of manganese. This material was made by melting and refining fairly high-manganese pig iron prepared from high-manganese ore. Heath (106), who was working at the Co. plant between 1S20 and 1S40, was convinced that the manganese content of the steel was the determining fa,ctor in its high quality. He learned of certain difficulties English steel manufacturers were having in making even fair-grade steel, and analyses of the material indicated low manganese contents. This convinced him that.if the use of manganese could be introduced in England its steel would be greatly benefited. In consequence, he moved to England and soon was producing certain grades of ferromanganese for use with the crucible process. He recommended addition of this metallic material to the ingot mold just before pouring. It was soon found that inferior brands of steel containing only traces of manganese could be greatly improved by such additions. All metallurgists of that time became convinced

Robot Supported Moulding—this is the name of Herrenknecht Formwork’s entry to the world of automated segment production. What had been considered impossible for a long time, has been achieved by Herrenknecht experts together with the Swiss company Marti AG: unmanned segment production on the working line. The moulds open and close autonomously with the help of a hydraulic system. A robot cleans and greases the moulds at one work station and inserts the injection sockets at another. The next step will include further automation and digital networking of all processes from production to installation in the tunnel.

Minerals have played a prominent role in the affairs of man and nations since time immemorial but with the advent of the industrial revolution, expanding use of the products of the mineral kingdom became synonymous with the material progress of mankind. Individuals and business groups have recognized this fact so have been aggressive in searching for and utilizing mineral resources, with notable success. Indeed, their achievements are primarily responsible for the present Machine Age. On the other hand, until recently the body politic has failed to grasp fully the essentiality of minerals although, at times, access to mineral supplies has been an important factor in the political maneuvers of nations. This chapter is concerned primarily with the broader political and economic relationships of mineral resources to the world economy, and with the internal and external actions of nations in the field of minerals. Many factors that condition the mineral economy of regions and the world as a whole, influence the internal and external affairs of individual nations. The more important of these are: 1. The nature of man's dependence on minerals. 2. The problems resulting from the unique characteristics of mineral occurrence. 3. Geopolitical concepts. 4. Minerals and world power. Actions of individual nations affecting their mineral economy seek two basic objectives: 1. Attainment and maintenance of prosperity. 2. Military security. Other objectives may be cited but on careful analysis they become integral parts or extreme phases of the two points noted above. For example, the twentieth century aggressions of the USSR, Germany, Italy, and Japan might be considered as direct bids for world power but they also can be interpreted as exaggerated or mistaken efforts toward military security and peacetime prosperity.
