The current state of the South African mining industry is briefly reviewed from the point of view of an engineer not schooled in the finer details of predictive economics. Based on the assumption that current world exploration targets are indicative of which commodities the world will want in the future, it is concluded that the South African mining industry will continue to be viable and growing well into the future. South Africa holds the minerals the world wants and needs, and as long as the world has people, the demand for those, including gold, will continue to grow. There still is a growing demand for vanity commodities' and even the demand for platinum as a jewellery material displays significant growth. Mine safety still needs to improve, but significant improvement has already been made although the industry is not always acknowledged for the effort in this field. The safety target set for 2013 is within reach but will require sustained effort. The physical mining conditions for the main revenue earners, coal, platinum, and gold, will change substantially in the near future. Research in mining has declined alarmingly and it is urgently necessary for that to be revitalized to generate the knowledge that will be required. In order to streamline the transfer of knowledge to the mining engineers of the future, research needs to be conducted with the full involvement of the universities. It will also be necessary for the universities to continually review curricula to incorporate the latest knowledge and to embark on a campaign of knowledge transfer to the older generation of mining engineers. The mining industry is well supported by the universities, who have done their duty with regard to societal transformation, and the universities are in turn supported by the industry through vehicles like the METE Industry is also strongly supported by a number of professional and vocational societies. The SAIMM will continue to play its vital role as the meeting point of the mining technical sciences, and will continue to disseminate knowledge via the journal, schools, and conferences. In the future, it will review its modus operandi to support the needs of growing membership in the remote branches. It will enter the research arena in an appropriate manner and give effect to the developing integration of mining and society. The most important threat to the future of the mining industry is the recurrent mention of nationalization. While interaction between the mining industry and political and economic development of South Africa has always been characteristic, the current debate is emotional more than rational, and engineers are not well equipped to participate. This matter needs to be finalized before it becomes a popular force that politicians cannot control.

The development of long term plans and schedules for strip mines now faces many companies, especially those developing large properties in the West. The rule of mining the lowest strip ratios first, while delaying equipment acquisitions and recouping investment the fastest, creates the situation where stripping ratios are too high in the latter years of mining operations. A program concept taking life of mine return on investment into account is developed in this paper to optimize mine scheduling and equipment acquisition. In addition, quality considerations (heat content, ash, sulfur, washability) can be considered by including the appropriate blending constraints to meet contract requirements.

The Pueblo Viejo project in the Dominican Republic installed an innovative sample system on its reverse circulation (RC) drilling rig during commissioning and subsequent commencement of operations. As knowledge of the orebody increased with mining and plant production, cost pressures became apparent that raised questions concerning the continued use of RC drilling versus blasthole sampling for ore control.To justify the continued use of RC drilling for grade control, an in-depth study was undertaken to determine the quality of the sample and prove its value-add to the operation.To investigate the differences in sample quality, a complete bench trial was initiated across both ore pits to compare RC drill results with blasthole assays on a side-by-side basis. The results indicated that based on ore block comparison between RC and blasthole sampling, RC identified an additional 20 per cent of high-grade (+ 4.5 g/t Au) ounces.Previous work indicated that Au, Ag and Cu were all elevated in the drill fines at Pueblo Viejo (Goers and Almond, 2012). This previous test work did not consider the quantity of fines in an RC sample therefore new test work was undertaken to include particle size distribution analyses. This study would determine if the inclusion of fines in the sample was occurring and compare the quantity of fines in the sample against other sample systems and blasthole samples.Comparisons between RC samples and blasthole samples indicate that for the RC samples a range of 30–35 per cent of the sample passed 300 mesh as compared to blastholes where the range of the sample passing 300 mesh was 15–30 per cent.This paper includes a case study on the importance of accurate samples and how they have impacted throughput through the pressure oxidation process plant at Pueblo Viejo. The accurate samples provided by RC allow for improved stockpile and blending strategies, showing the importance of accurate samples to manage risk and create value, against the perception that savings can be made at the risk of poor sampling performance.CITATION:Almond, M and Ventura, L, 2017. THE use of small substations for the supplying of 275-volt energy to the locomotive and cutting machines in coal mines is a well-established practice. A few years ago, when labor costs were lower, these substations were located as near to the load as possible, and an operator was provided for each station. This practice has now become so expensive that substations are being located with reference to other mining machinery, such as hoists or pumps, so that one operator can look after both. Some-times the substation is operated by one whose duties make him traverse quite a large area. In such cases the interruption of alternating-current supply may produce a long interruption in the direct current, as the station cannot resume service until this man reaches it. Such interruptions interfere seriously with production and may easily counterbalance the supposed saving gained by such operating methods. The grouping of substations for convenience in operating may also result in excessive copper loss and consequently poor trolley voltage, with its attendant evils of low locomotive speeds and increased locomotive motor maintenance. The speed of the coal-cutting machines will also be reduced. By relieving the substation of its, burden of the operating labor cost, the most economical location, from an electrical standpoint, may be chosen. The matter of machine insurance should also be considered. If an attendant is caring for several kinds of equipment, he cannot watch the machine continually for signs of trouble; therefore, continued overload, phase failure, low alternating-current voltage, bearing trouble, etc. may result. Some partly automatic equipments have been installed; these have protection against low voltage, reverse current, and bearing trouble and are provided with automatic reclosing circuit breakers. This is a step in the right direction but it does not go far enough to give first-class machine insurance.

Over the past five years, commodity prices have been high and the focus of many plants has been æthe more metal the better, at whatever costÆ. In the recent economic crisis, the focus has shifted more to reducing the cost of production and operating at higher efficiency. Since 2002, JKTech has partnered with the Century mine in north-west Queensland to transfer technology and understanding through the good, bad and ugly economic environments, using methodology and techniques arising from research at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) and other research institutions around the world as part of the AMIRA International P9 Project. The JKTech studies were concentrated around the primary zinc circuit. During this period, Century expanded the primary zinc regrind capacity, installed additional scavenging capacity, installed and commissioned a Jameson cell for concentrate cleaning in the carbon preflotation circuit, and installed additional primary grinding capacity. Flotation circuit models were developed for each of the survey campaigns and enabled opportunities for further improvement to be identified, implemented and tested in the subsequent campaign.

A tecnologia de injeção de carvão pulverizado (ICP) nas ventaneiras dos altos-fornos é consolidada mundialmente para diminuir o consumo de coque para a produção de ferrogusa. Atualmente, existem mais de 400 altos-fornos que praticam esta técnica, sendo que em mais de 70% de todos os altos-fornos no mundo já se usa algum tipo de injeção de materiais sólidos. A injeção de carvão pulverizado permite utilizar misturas de carvões com diferentes características, possibilitando reduções no custo de produção do ferro-gusa. Um carvão para injeção precisa queimar rapidamente para minimizar a formação de carvão não queimado, material que prejudica a permeabilidade do altoforno (AF). Devido à necessidade contínua que as siderúrgicas têm de reduzir os custos de produção, o reaproveitamento de resíduos industriais é uma tendência crescente no segmento. Nesse contexto, o presente trabalho avaliou a combustibilidade dos finos de coque provenientes do despoeiramento do beneficiamento de coque da Gerdau Ouro Branco, visando à injeção em AF. O material possuía granulometria abaixo de 90µm, usualmente praticada em ICP. Os ensaios de combustibilidade foram realizados com o material em proporção única e, em misturas de diferentes proporções mássicas com carvões minerais. A combustibilidade dos carvões e dos finos de coque foi avaliada e mostrou que os finos de coque provenientes do despoeiramento do beneficiamento de coque possuem boa combustibilidade e podem ser injetados em alto-forno

Hard rock mining has grown in importance in the Yukon Territory during the last 10 years while Alaskan hard rock mining has declined. One asbestos deposit in Alaska is dormant, but an asbestos deposit 55 miles to the east in the Yukon Territory is being mined by the Clinton Mine Div., Cassiar Asbestos Corp., Ltd. In this Bureau of Mines report, the economics of mining in the two locations were derived using the Clinton mine as a model. Both deposits were assumed to be of equal size and mined by similar methods. Conventional open pit mining and processing methods were assumed, and capital and operating costs were derived using flowsheets and standard costing methods. The estimated cost for the mine, mill, and support facilities in Alaska was about 30 percent more expensive than that in the Yukon Territory. The higher labor rates in Alaska were the primary contributor to the higher construction costs; freight rates added only slightly to the total costs. Approximately two-thirds of the additional annual costs of operating in Alaska were for wages and fringe benefits. The price required for the Alaskan asbestos fiber was $356.65 per ton compared with $287.44 for Yukon fiber, plus or minus 20 percent. A 12 percent discounted cash flow rate of return, 100 percent equity financing, and a rapid writeoff of assets were assumed.

After a snap-shot survey of water quality of streams draining various coal measures carried out in 2000 - 2001, West Coast Regional Council expanded its monitoring programme to better establish the condition of streams draining coal mining areas and to characterise the variability of water quality with respect to stream flow. Samples were collected for water quality indicators such as pH, sulphate, turbidity, conductivity, temperature and dissolved oxygen as well as macro-invertebrates, fish and assessments of stream habitat. Water quality sampling was carried out at 27 sites on 21 streams located from Page Stream near Seddonville in the north, to Seven Mile Creek near Dunollie in the South, and to Garvey Creek east of Reefton. There was relatively low variability of pH, conductivity and sulphate concentrations at most of the sites sampled. Conductivity and sulphate concentrations reduced with increasing flow and pH generally increased. Significant effects on macro-invertebrate and fish populations were identified at several of the sites where water quality sampling was undertaken. Of the water quality parameters tested, macro-invertebrates were mostly affected by pH. Although not sampled directly (conductivity was used as a surrogate) heavy metal concentration may explain some of the variation in macro-invertebrate communities. Three creeks affected by mine drainage were sampled for fish and no fish were present. Fish appear to be more sensitive to acid rock drainage that invertebrates. Using data from this survey and other studies conducted in the region, the total length of stream that is actually or highly likely to be adversely affected by acid rock drainage was estimated at 125 km. This figure is useful as a gauge as to the magnitude of the issue in this region and for setting of priorities for remediation. However, as it is only an estimate based on limited sampling sites, it should be used with caution.

There are five logical stages in the search for orebodies in virgin territory, namely: (1) reconnaissance inventory of geology, and related investigations; (2) development of broad concepts as a basis for selecting regions of potential mineral deposits; (3) assessment of criteria leading to specific localities within these regions; (4) geo-physical and geochemical studies that will delineate small anomalous areas; and (5) stripping, drilling or other means of locating ore. In addition, the development of new means of extracting mineral resources and the finding of new uses play a vital role in our mineral industry. The continued growth of this industry will be largely governed by our ability to develop or to adapt new concepts and techniques, and to produce a greater number of scientists and engineers. It should always be remembered that more than one-third of Canada's exports are dependent upon our ability to find, develop and economic-ally exploit new orebodies.

The recent paper by Bain (1981) contains an unfortunate, and potentially misleading typographic error. On page 9, second paragraph, Bain states that, "some samples of drill core from the (Candlow) Formation ... contain up to 90 ppm gold and 2 000 ppm arsenic". The gold value should read 90 ppb. In fact, in the original version of the paper (Bain, 1980), the gold value quoted was actually 60 ppb.Bain also refers briefly to some geochemical data which is attributed to me, and which I feel require some clarification.In addition, the paper contains some factual errors relating to the occurrence of carbonate and potential host rocks to Carlin-type gold deposits in the Candlow Formation.

The presence of enargite (Cu3AsS4) is problematic in gold processing because it is environmentally hazardous due to its arsenic content but also because it is double refractory causing both cyanide and oxygen consumption to increase. Selective leaching and treatment of the arsenic would prove advantageous prior to applying conventional gold leaching methods. The reactivity of enargite samples from Butte, Montana and Quiruvilca, Peru were spectroelectrochemically studied under alkaline conditions, pH range of 8-13, using Raman spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Raman spectra of the surface were collected during and after voltammograms were potentially cycled in order to determine and compare surface species against theoretical EH-pH diagrams determined from mass-balanced thermodynamic calculations using StabCal software. Under slightly oxidizing conditions, covellite (CuS) peaks were found in a short matter of time, above ~100mV vs SHE for pH 9-13, suggesting arsenic leaching specifically occurred. At longer conditioning times, elemental sulfur was observed and tended to passivate the surface. The presence of sulfur suggests that copper was eventually leached. By operating above pH 12, under slightly reducing conditions near -300mV vs SHE, arsenic can be selectively leached as thioarsenate (AsS43-) or thiosulfate (AsO43-) without sulfur formation.

The purpose of this paper is to present to the operators, in other districts a detailed description of the ruining method used and the results obtained to exploiting one of the zinc-lead deposits of the Kansas-Oklahoma-Missouri district. No. 1. mine is located in the heart of the town of Picher in the extreme northeast corner of Oklahoma. HISTORY The first prospect drilling was done at No. 1 mine late in-1914, and shaft sinking was started early in 1915. Sufficient ore was developed to start construction of the mill in April, 1016, Production begin in August, 1916, and the mine s been producing, except for short periods, to the present time. The property was originally a 40-acre tract, but additional properties have been consolidated with the original one until the mine now covers 200 acres.

One might ask why someone like myself, involved in the determination of taxes, should be speaking at a "cost engineering" session of a national engineering society. While it is true that taxes, especially income taxes, whether they be federal, state, or local, are not usually thought of as a "cost" of doing business, it is equally true that these tax costs do reduce the distributable profits just as much, as the cost of power, supplies, or labor. Therefore, the consideration given to taxes is often as important as that given to other costs. Hopefully yea will recognize that, within certain limits, taxes can be controlled to an economic advantage. That question may then lead to another question: What does the amount of taxes have to do with me? I'm an engineer or manager; not an accountant or a lawyer. If I may take a few minutes of your time, I might be able to present in a brief discussion some interesting facts that will provide the answers to those questions. My discussion will be directed mainly to Federal taxes. However, much of it will be applicable to state and local taxes, also.

The quality of the produced steel in the continuous casting process is significantly governed by the melt flow in the mold. However, direct flow measurements in liquid metals are still rather scarce. In order to investigate these flow phenomena, three experimental facilities operating with low melting liquid metals were installed at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR). The melt flow in the models is measured by the Ultrasonic Doppler Velocimetry (UDV) or the Contactless Inductive Flow Tomography (CIFT), multi-phase flows can be visualized by X-ray imaging. The obtained measurement results are primarily used for validation of numerical models. In this paper we will investigate the fluid flow in the mold and the behavior of the surface of the liquid metal using flow measurements by UDV and surface profile measurement by a laser scanner, respectively. CERTAIN dusts are dangerous when inhaled, but most hazardous of all dusts are quartz or other forms of pure crystalline silica. The inhalation of dusts containing silica in combination with other elements gives rise to changes in the lung which differ from those produced by pure silica. As a generality, silicates are less dangerous than pure crystalline silica and vary greatly among themselves in harmfulness. Repeated analyses have shown that approximately 70 per cent of the total number of particles involved in any dust-producing operation are below 1 to 2 microns in diameter. (A micron is. approximately 1/25,000 in.) Similar studies of dusts recovered from silicotic lungs post mortem have demonstrated essentially the same size frequency distribu-tion, except that the upper limit of size retained in the air sacs is approxi-mately 10 microns. Experiments carried on by Gardner and the author have further demonstrated that greater changes were produced by a fixed weight of very fine quartz particles (2 to 3 microns and smaller) than by the same weight of slightly larger particles (8 to 10 microns). Any attempt to control a dust hazard should therefore be directed toward the removal from the working atmosphere of particles less than 10 microns in size, and particularly those below 3 microns. All industrial hygienists agree on this matter, but there remains considerable dispute as to the lower limit of particle size capable of causing injury. It has been gen-erally conceded, however, that particles of harmful dusts smaller than ¼ to ½ micron are not essentially concerned in the development of pulmonary fibrosis. This opinion is partly substantiated by the existence of large numbers of these small particles in practically all atmospheres that are, not associated with any known hazard. Such particles are so small that they have very little mass, fail to settle even in quiet air, and probably are not easily retained in the lung. Until further research proves that they are involved in the dangers provoked by the inhalation of certain dusts, engineers will generally agree that it is better to dis-regard them.

Extraction and processing constitute an important area in the metallurgy of molybdenum. Molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) production is one of the most important stages in molybdenum production. In this study, the effects of different furnace types on MoO3 production were investigated by using molybdenum concentrate as a raw material obtained during the enrichment of copper ores. Preliminary experiments have been made using a chamber type furnace, and a transition to a pilot-scale has been carried out with rotary kiln experiments. The effects of a different time and atmospheric conditions on MoO3 roasting kinetics were investigated by experimental studies conducted in the temperature range of 500–650°C. It was determined that the optimum temperature and time for sulfur (S) removal was 625°C and 180 min in the studies carried out in the rotary kiln, and it was determined that 0.61%S content was reached with an average removal efficiency of 98%. The activation energy in these sets was calculated as 89.519 kJ/mol.

"Freeport-McMoRan Inc. (FMI) commissioned the expansion of the Morenci Metcalf concentrator in 2014. The concentrator included many design and equipment innovations, including the first-of-its-kind Metso Hydraulic Roll Crusher (HRC), variable speed ball mills and variable speed crushers. In addition to the innovative design, FMI commissioned the Metso APC team to design a realistic process simulator and the plant APC. The process simulator was utilized to train operators before commissioning, which led to a smoother plant start up. The plant APC utilized the concept of dynamic constraint control, which controls the feed to the primary ball mills by “pulling” the tons from crushed rock storage bins, which then automatically are filled by the upstream HRC and secondary crushing circuits. The primary ball-mill control also adjusts the water addition to the cyclone clusters to avoid overload and achieve sufficient grind size. The constraints include in-circuit constraints for feeder capacity, screen-deck capacity, ball mill power, cyclone mass flow, pump capacity and pump motor capacity. The APC system was implemented shortly after the start of commissioning and immediately demonstrated increased throughput and an ability to highlight and quantify process constraints and bottlenecks. The following paper outlines the control strategy, discusses system implementation, results and challenges.INTRODUCTION The FMI Metcalf Concentrator is located in Morenci Arizona on the site of the old original Concentrator. The new Metcalf concentrator started operation in May of 2014. This plant was designed for an average of 63,500 tpd (70,000 stpd), increasing the total Morenci concentrator complex production to a nominal 113,400 tpd (125,000 stpd). The process flow diagram is shown below in Figure 1.The process consists of primary crushing feeding a coarse ore stockpile followed by secondary crushing operating in closed circuit with vibrating screen decks. The screen undersize feeds the first of its kind Metso hydraulic roll crusher (HRC) operating in a closed circuit with vibrating screens. The primary crusher is a Metso 60x110 gyratory crusher. Secondary crushers are Metso MP1250 Crushers with variable speed drives. Secondary crusher discharge is recycled to the dry screen feed bin and screened with oversize returning to secondary crushing and undersize feeding the Metso HRC3000. The product from the 3.0 meter X 2.0 meter roll crusher is wet screened with the undersize feeding the grinding circuit, which is comprised of two each 24-foot diameter by 40- foot-long variable speed ball mills running in parallel with each in closed circuit with a cyclone bank of 12 cyclones. The wet screen oversize is recycled to the HRC feed bin."

The Black Hawk district in New Mexico hosts an unusual type of deposit: arsenide five-element veins. These deposits are Ag-Co-Ni-Bi-As-bearing carbonate veins with local concentrations of U, Pb, Zn, Sb, and other elements. They are high-grade silver deposits (1000s g/t Ag), but low tonnage (<1 Mt) and difficult to find. By 1881, claims were staked and a town developed. It is estimated that >$1,500,000 was produced in 1883–1893, when Ag prices dropped due to the 1893 Ag panic. Solid Silver Mining Co. produced $600,000 from the Black Hawk mine; one car load contained $28,000 worth of silver! The town of Black Hawk grew to 125 population by November 1883. By the end of 1893, the town was vacant; nothing remains. The district was idle until 1916, and the mines operated sporadically since because of lack of available capital, water issues, and difficulty in finding ore shoots. The area is a favorite for mineral collectors. Tungsten was found in the district in 1935 in quartz veins associated with pegmatites. Metal production from 1881–1960 is estimated as 3,000 lbs Cu, 1,000 oz Au, 1,286,000 oz Ag, and 4,000 lbs Pb. In addition, 10,542 short tons of 2.7–71% WO ore and 615 short tons of fluorspar ore have been produced from the district.
