This paper addresses strategic investment decisions when they are nested in a project development format where each project is implemented in phases and each phase is approved to move on to the next phase only if certain technical and economic requirements are met. This configuration is sometimes referred to as a ?Project Portfolio?. Mining companies maintain project portfolios in their exploration investment plan. This study proposes a procedure to best manage an exploration project portfolio including technical and economic uncertainties. The procedure may support decision makers in a simple and intuitive way, while maintaining the rigor and precision required by the rather large amount of financial resources typically called for by mining projects. The procedure was tested in a real case study of a gold mining company and its exploration projects portfolio. The procedure uses the following approaches: i) investment valuation methods under technical and market uncertainties based on Option Pricing Model, Real Option Theory and Option Space; ii) portfolio management and Stage Gate®1 method; iii) Monte Carlo simulation.

"The Laronde mill was commissioned in 1988 and has been treating the Laronde Penna ore since 2000. The Laronde plant, situated in the Abitibi region of Quebec, has experienced mill expansions to accommodate 7500 mtpd and to recover gold and silver as well as important amounts of base metals (Cu, Zn, Pb). Ten sequential metallurgical and environmental processes are responsible for metals recovery and process viability. Over 200,000 ounces of gold, 4,5 million ounces of silver, 7000 tonnes of copper, and 78,000 tonnes of zinc are produced annually.In 2008, the Goldex plant began trucking high grade (35-45 g/t Au) pyrite sulphide concentrate (TCGO) for gold extraction at a newly constructed treatment plant, increasing gold output at Laronde by 40,000 ounces. In 2009, the high gold grade Lapa ore processing facilities were annexed to the Laronde plant increasing output by 120,000 ounces of gold. TCGO and Lapa productions are forecasted until 2018 and 2015 respectively, with known reserves of each mine.Today, up to 140 permanent employees run and optimise the Laronde plant operation. As a result, Laronde has intricacies intrinsic to a large and varied operation. The paper will outline the metallurgical highlights, challenges, and future outlook related to the treatment of each ore type (Laronde, TCGO, and Lapa).INTRODUCTIONFollowing the 2000 to 2003 expansions, the Laronde plant evolved into a mature milling complex with developed processing, man power, and water treatment capabilities able to accommodate the complex Laronde ore. The ore requires a series of grinding, copper/lead flotation and separation, zinc flotation, zinc tails precious metals leaching, followed by a counter-current decantation circuit and Merrill Crowe precipitation. A paste backfill and SO2-air cyanide destruction operate intermittently. The tailings area has a dedicated cyanide destruction and metals precipitation plant prior to water recycling to the mill. A biological water treatment plant was put into service in 2004 to address the build-up of thiocyanate in the tailings ponds at Laronde. This was the result of the high sulphide content of the Laronde ore and 90% recirculation of the process water. The plant uses bacteria to oxidize and destroy thiocyanate, and removes phosphate from the water before it is released to the environment."

Fluidized - bed roasting was investigated as a means of decomposing gypsum and gypsum mixtures to produce a gas rich in sulfur dioxide and a lime or portland cement residue . Ninety- eight percent desulfurization of gypsum in a 10 - inch fluidized- bed reactor took 1.5 hours at an operating temperature between 1,200 ° and 1,225 ° C. A cement- type residue was obtained but had to be refired at 1,450 ° C before mortar prepared from it met the physical specifications for cement .

This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2009 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on industry exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities by the mineral industry based upon these data. Two types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for the year 2009: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and 2) information on regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2009 and were compiled by the USGS. The MEG information summarizes planned company budgets for worldwide exploration activities in 2009, primarily for base metals (copper, lead, nickel and zinc), diamond and precious metals (gold, platinum-group metals and silver). Information on uranium exploration was included in the MEG overview for the first time in 2007, although this information was not included in the USGS analysis prior to 2008. The MEG survey methodology was changed in 1999 to include companies with exploration budgets greater than $100,000, as well as those companies included in prior studies whose anticipated budgets were above $2.9 million. MEG estimates that its post-1999 surveys cover at least 90 percent of world nonferrous nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 2009 survey is reported by MEG to cover an estimated 95 percent. Companies who chose not to participate in the MEG study, private companies that do not publish data and government-funded exploration activities make up the majority of the remaining 5 percent. MEG included 86 more companies in its 2009 survey than it did in 2008.

"Uranium occurrences are widely distributed in tuffaceous-argillaceous beds and abundant rhyolitic volcanic rocks of the upper Aillik group, which is more than 3 km thick and over 125 km by 40 km in areal extent. They include partially developed Kitts and Michelin deposits, containing 1560 and 7366 t U respectively.Uranium occurs mainly as disseminated fine pitchblende grains in beds and lenticular stratabound zones, and rarely as coarse pitchblende aggregates and thin veinlets. The Kitts deposit and ten other occurrences are in the argillaceous-tuffaceous beds within a steeply dipping stratigraphic zone, less than 50 m thick and over 20 km long, at the base of the upper Aillik group. The occurrences hosted by the rhyolitic rocks, numbering over fifty and including the Michelin deposit, are in elongate structural-stratigraphic belts or zones, and are characterized by a pronounced enrichment of soda and depletion of potash associated with mineralization. The mineralized zones are affected to a varying degree by Hudsonian deformation, metamorphism and granitic intrusions.The uranium mineralization is interpreted as genetically related to the felsic volcanism, involving syngenetic deposition in argillaceous-tuffaceous beds and epigenetic emplacement in rhyolites. The volcanic activity occurred 1855 ± 5 Ma ago according to a preliminary U-Pb zircon date on porphyritic rhyolite. Pitchblendesfrom the Kitts and Michelin deposits and a few other occurrences in rhyolites have yielded nearly concordant dates in 1810 to 1730 Ma range. They reflect resetting of isotopic equilibrium at the time of Hudsonian deformation. Other isotopic data on pitchblendes and galena from veins and aggregates .in the south near the 'Grenville Front' indicate local redistribution of uranium and radiogenic lead at the time of Grenville Orogeny approximately 1100 Ma ago."

The pressure of low commodity prices forced the design process for the second lift of Northparkes E26 Mine to adopt a continuous improvement philosophy. The emphasis was to minimise capital expenditure while still maintaining the excellent low operating costs achieved on Lift 1. Although the first block cave lift at Northparkes is the most productive underground mine in the world and is held up as a benchmark for the use of technology in mining, areas for improvement were identified. Every area was critically assessed and investigated for the possible application of new techniques and technologies. Key learnings from the construction and production phases of Lift 1 were captured, documented and used as the starting point for the Lift 2 design. This paper shows how and why the design parameters initially used onLift 1 were changed to become the current E26 Lift 2 developmentproposal. The main differences between the two block caves arehighlighted. QUEBEC CARTIER MINING COMPANY was incorporated in 1957 to explore and develop low grade iron are deposits in Northeastern Quebec. Four separate deposits were located and identified as being of ore quality and size to support commercial development. Said deposits were located at Lac Jeannine, Mount-Wright, Fire Lake and Mount-Reed. In 1970, in preparation for the replacement of the depleting Lac Jeannine are reserves, construction of an SS-mile railway extension was initiated, towards the newly selected mine site at Mount-Wright. This orebody was selected because the physical and chemical characteristics of the ore were very much similar to those of Lac Jeannine, as well as its huge reserves, estimated at more than one billion tons. In addition to the railroad extension, a mine, concentrator and related facilities were constructed and the new town of Fermont was created. Total investment for the Mount-Wright project exceeded $700 million and initial production commenced in 1976. Quebec Cartier is presently (1992) the leading producer and seller of iron ore in North America at 15,5 million tons and employs some 2,300 people.

"Continuous mining systems containing multiple excavators producing multiple products of raw materials are highly complex, exhibiting strong interdependency between constituents. Furthermore, random variables govern the system, which causes uncertainty in the supply of raw materials: uncertainty in knowledge about the reserve, the quantity demanded by the customers, and the breakdown of equipment. This paper presents a stochastic-based mine process simulator capturing different sources of uncertainties. It aims to quantify the effect of geological uncertainty and its impacts on the ability to deliver contractually defined quantities and qualities of coal, and on the system efficiency in terms of utilization of major equipment. Two different areas of research are combined: geostatistical simulation for capturing geological uncertainty, and stochastic process simulation to predict the performance and reliability of a large continuous mining system.The process of modelling and simulation in this specific production environment is discussed in detail. Problem specification and a new integrated simulation approach are presented. A case study in a large coal mine is used to demonstrate the impacts and evaluate the results in terms of reaching optimal production control decisions to increase average equipment utilization and control coal quality and quantity. The new approach is expected to lead to more robust decisions, improved efficiencies, and better coal quality management.IntroductionContinuous coal mining systems containing multiple excavators producing multiple products of raw materials are highly complex and exhibit strong interdependencies between constituents. A practical method has been developed and field tested which provides an estimate of the bearing capacity of mine roof and floor. The relationship between penetration of the strata and imposed loads is determined by in situ tests. Information of this type is needed to determine the maximum allowable pressure that may be applied by self-advancing supports on roof and floor of a longwall face without causing a punching type of failure.

Solution mining projects are conducted through one or more boreholes which penetrate en ore body. Proper drilling, completion and maintenance of the boreholes, therefore, is essential to the success of any solution mining operation. Wells drilled for solution mining encounter problems quite similar to problems encountered by the petroleum industry in drilling, completing and maintaining wells for the production of oil, gas or water. Many of the services developed and much of the experience gained by the petroleum industry is applicable to solution mining wells. As in the petroleum industry, each individual wellbore and ore body in a solution mining project provides its own problems. These vary greatly from well to well, and it is not possible to set down data or outline programs that will apply to all wells. Instead, the design of the drilling, completion, production and maintenance programs should be worked out for each individual well. The purpose of this paper, then, is to generally describe materials, equipment and techniques available for these programs and to discuss the purpose and sequence of their use.

Vehicle vibration exposure has been linked to chronic back pain and low back symptoms among agricultural tractor drivers. The objectives of this study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) were to assess driver whole body vibration (WBV) exposures and recommend interventions to reduce the risk of back related injuries, particularly relative to vehicle jarring/jolting (the transient mechanical shock components of WBV). The methodology included collecting, from two independent samples, ?eld data and health and work history data of farm equipment operators. Data were collected during mowing, raking, baling, chiseling, tilling, and road travel for different model tractors. Spraying using a sprayer and shrub removal with a skid steer loader were also included. Based on ISO 2631 (1985), the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, threshold limit values, presents 0.5 m/s2 as the action level recommended by the Commission of European Communities for overall weighted total RMS acceleration (vector sum for axes x, y, and z) [ACGIH, 2006. Threshold limit values and biological exposure indices. Cincinnati, OH]. WBV measured at the operator/seat interface exceeded this action level. The roughest rides and highest vector sum accelerations occurred with small utility tractor mowers (3.3 and 2.8 m/s2) and a skid steer loader (1.7 m/s2). Major ?ndings from health and work history data showed 96% of participants reported having to bend or twist their necks, although 24% reported neck symptoms. Sixty four percent of participating operators reported experiencing back symptoms (e.g., pain, aching, stiffness, etc.). Recommendations included: specifying a seat that ??better?? isolates operators from jars/jolts with new tractor purchases; maintaining the seat/seat suspension and replacing worn or damaged cushions with NIOSH tested viscoelastic foam padding; using larger diameter tires with radial ply instead of bias ply construction, particularly on small utility tractor mowers, to aid in attenuating ride ??roughness??; using a swivel seat to reduce the stress on the neck from bending or twisting; and improving efforts to educate owner/operators of the adverse effects of WBV exposures. Since the data presented in this paper were collected from two independent samples, the authors were unable to draw any correlations or etiological inferences from the study. However, results were compared and contrasted with other studies which included similar vibration measurements in agriculture.

The Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) schedule model is used for short- to medium-term planning and scheduling at the Fimiston Open Pit Mine (the Superpit). The model bridges the gap between grade control models, which are generated one to seven days prior to mining, and the annual Resource and Reserve model update that is used for budget and life-of-mine plans. The schedule model uses close-spaced grade control data (up to 20 000 m drilled each month) as well as resource definition drilling to estimate production volumes three to six months ahead of current mining. From this, a rolling 12 week mining and processing schedule is generated on a monthly basis. As the KCGM operation is mill and sulfur constrained, the schedule model needs to be an accurate predictor of ounces as well as tonnes, gold and sulfur grades. The process must also be time efficient in order to meet monthly planning and reporting deadlines. Due to the large amount of new data generated each month, model updates using conventional interpretation and estimation techniques have proven to be impractical and too time consuming. The phenomenon of surfactant adsorption at mineral surfaces is of significant importance in many particulate processes ranging from mineral flotation and enhanced oil recovery to pharmaceutics, paint technology and the casting of high quality ceramics. Stability of the dispersions is related not only to the amount of adsorbed surfactant but also to the structure of the adsorbed surfactant molecules at the interface. This structure greatly depends on the type of surfactant and the hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity of the surface. On hydrophobic surfaces surfactants adsorb regardless of surface charge by van der Waals/hydrophobic inter-actions with hydrocarbon chains accommodated at the surface. On the other hand, on hydrophilic surfaces the surfactants adsorb through electrostatic interactions with their polar moiety fixed at the surface. In the latter case, the electric charge of the surface and surfactant plays a crucial role in the surfactant adsorption process. The recently developed soft-contact Atomic Force Microscopy technique has revealed images of adsorbed surfactant structures at various interfaces. The adsorbed structures of a cationic surfactant (CTAB) and an anionic surfactant (SDS) are presented in this work for different concentrations at hydrophobic graphite and hydrophilic mica surfaces. Different types of micellar arrangements have been observed at these surfaces for surfactant concentrations around the critical micelle concentration. The structures are more ordered and well defined at the graphite surface than at the mica surface. These results have been correlated with the hydrophobicity of the surfaces as revealed by contact angle measurements.

Iron Road Limited (Iron Road) is currently evaluating the feasibility of producing 21.5 Mt/a of high-grade (>66 per cent Fe) magnetite concentrate from a 3.7 Bt resource (JORC) located at Warramboo on the central Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. Bulk concentrate can be produced via a conventional grind and low-intensity magnetic separation flow sheet. Due to the comparatively coarse magnetite liberation size (106 µm), consideration was given to enhancing both the grind economics and coarser product sizing via gravity separation.This paper outlines the test work, flow sheet design and engineering design of a gravity beneficiation circuit (GBC) conducted by Mineral Technologies for Iron Road. The resulting circuit optimisation necessitated mass balance simulation by Iron Road’s SysCAD model to quantify the resulting changes in mill recirculation load. This included the determination of project-critical grinding power and energy requirements with and without the GBC installed into the primary ball mill classification circuit. The outcome of this work was the design of a GBC, including spirals and up-current classification, which led to a substantial reduction (33 per cent) in ball mill recirculating load and power requirements, together with a favourable coarsening of final product size due to the relatively coarser gravity concentrate. This has led to a significant reduction in project design capital and operating costs. A further benefit of this approach is increased recovery of (paramagnetic) hematite and lesser titano-hematite via gravity separation compared to an all-magnetic separation approach.CITATION:Hunt, A G, Showers, G J and Botman, P, 2015. "Historically, the Crinum mine has experienced significant falls of ground when longwall production slowed to prepare for recovery in weak roof areas. These conditions continue through the recovery process and result in both safety concerns and delays. When mine plans and exploration revealed that most of the mine's future longwall recoveries were located in weak roof areas, a decision was made to try pre-driven recovery roads as a solution to the problem. After completing eight pre-driven recovery roads with varying degrees of success and numerous lessons, the Crinum North mine now utilizes a modified Pre-driven Recovery Roadway (PDRR) to improve the longwall take-off process in weak roof areas. During mine development, a standard roadway is driven where the final recovery location of each longwall is planned. After the installation of secondary support, the PDRR is backfilled with a cement-flyash mix to provide support to the roof, and confinement to the ribs and floor of the roadway. The method has been refined over the last four years to provide greater strata stability and improved operational and safety performance compared with conventional take-offs at Crinum, and has resulted in a site record of longwall relocation in 11.5 days (pull mesh to picks in coal). This paper describes the evolution of the PDRRs from Crinum East to Crinum North, including lessons from initial attempts and changes to the secondary support regime, the operational approach during the final stages of retreat, the backfill strategy and plans for the future.INTRODUCTIONThe Crinum mine is the underground component of BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance's (BMA) Gregory Crinum mine, located northeast of Emerald, Queensland (Figure 1).The Crinum mine has a history of roof control problems coming into and during longwall recoveries. Weak roof, combined with the slow mining, which is a consequence of preparing for equipment recovery, pulling mesh (which also creates tip-to-face issues), and the lengthy bolt-up process, often results in loss of immediate roof and subsequent roof falls. In fact, approximately 50% of the first 13 longwall recoveries (which were at depths of 180 to 200m) experienced roof fall delays, the longest of which took four months to mine the last pillar and recover the longwall. This recurring problem prompted the mine to investigate options to reduce or eliminate the problem."

Falconbridge, a major base metal producer in the Sudbury Basin of Ontario, identified a need to find a safe and cost effective replacement for welded-wire mesh used to support loose ground during underground nickel mining. Falconbridge took a methodical approach to the concept of a spray-on liner as a screen replacement proving the strength characteristics of the liner as a safe, cost effective, and suitable method of supporting ground. Compact, hydraulic mixing and spraying equipment have been developed and are in use at the Fraser mine. The Tekflex material has been approved as a wire-mesh replacement and has been in use since November1998.

One of the most succinct and illuminating perspectives of the field of geophysical exploration to appear in recent years is an article by E. A. Eckhardt, in the magazine Geophysics for October 1949. Although his review covers the year 1948, many of the data presented are apropos to a review of 1949, and form a pertinent background for a consideration of current progress. He presents charts of the world-wide distribution of gravimeter and seismograph activity in oil exploration, which show that surveys in the United States accounted for practically 68%; of all gravity work and 80%; of all seismic activity. Canada ranked second, with a proportion of roughly 6%, in each case; South America accounted for about the same percentage of seismic work, and double that amount for gravity surveys. Within the United States, Texas and Louisiana were the scenes of the greatest activity, both claiming about 60% of all surveys by each method.

As the nickel sulfide ore deposits become decreasingly viable as a source of nickel metal, increasing attention is being paid to the exploitation of the nickeliferous laterite ores. Attempts to produce a high grade ferronickel concentrate from these ores by pyrometallurgical methods face several challenges, in particular the selective recovery of the highly disseminated nickel from the reduced ore. The current work explores strategies for maximizing the size of ferronickel particles formed in order to improve the selective recovery of the ferronickel by magnetic separation. The effect of various coal, elemental sulphur, pyrite and sodium sulphate additions on ferronickel particle formation and size at 1000°C have been investigated. It has been observed that increased coal additions leads to a moderate improvement in the size of the ferronickel particles, while the presence of any sulphur bearing reagent leads to a significant increase in particle size. The retention of sulphur in the reduced material has also been studied, showing sodium sulphate has the highest retention, followed by pyrite and then elemental sulphur. An inverse trend was observed in the efficiency of sulphur retention on the basis of residual mass of sulphur per unit mass of reagent added.
