The contiguous Kotre Basantpur and Pachmo (KBP) coal blocks in the Hazaribagh District of Jharkhand State in east India are being developed by Tata Steel Limited (Tata Steel) to supply coking coal to a new steel mill at Kalinganagar in Orissa.The planning challenges are many. The multiple coal seams range in thickness up to 6 m and extend to nearly 500 m depth, with dips up to 25¦ and highly variable quality. Several normal faults with throws up to 150 m intersect the deposit. There is little room for waste dumping on the lease, several large nalas (seasonal creeks) cross the blocks, and the KBP leases are not contiguous with Tata Steel's existing mining operations at West Bokaro. Geotechnical conditions, while not well defined at this stage, are largely unfavourable. There are several villages on the blocks, and extensive paddy fields. In 2009, Adelaide Mining Consultants Pty Ltd (AMC) completed a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a production level of 8 Mt/a. A terrace mining system was proposed using 28 m3 hydraulic excavators and 185 t trucks working horizontal up-dip slices. Subsequently the viability of in-pit crushing and conveying was assessed, but the full results were not available for this paper.It is planned to extract a total of 147 Mt of raw coal at a strip ratio of 5.2 bank cubic metres per tonne (bcm/t). The planned maximum pit depth is over 300 m.The project includes a washery, a 2 + 25 MW fluidised bed power station to utilise all the coarse washery rejects, and a railway spur line to carry the washed coal to the railhead some 7 km distant.

This case study is an example of how Encyle/Texas, Inc. (a subsidiary of ASARCO) responded to various socio-economic forces by converting an idle zinc hydrometallurgical refinery into a metals recycling facility. The facility accepts metal-laden process waste streams and produces various "synthetic ores" which are sold back to industry. Acceptance and reactions by industrial, political, economical and regulatory interests towards the project are also discussed.

"The material known as coal has a highly variable composition. As a consequence, coals show a great variation in their physical and chemical properties as a function of coal rank. The situation is further complicated because the preparation engineer must deal with raw coal, as mined. This is an assemblage of coal, upwards of 30% mineral matter and, typically, several percent pyrite. The kind and amount of the mineral constituents is also highly variable from source to source. A knowledge of coal rank and source location, and the kind and amount of associated impurities, is the first step in evaluating the response of a raw coal to preparation procedures. The raw coal must first be characterized before information from one source can be extrapolated to that of another.INTRODUCTIONCoal is a black or brownish-black combustible solid, derived from a heterogeneous mixture of plant remains and associated mineral matter that have undergone chemical and physical metamorphic changes by biological and geological processes without free access to air. It is composed principally of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen with lesser amounts of nitrogen and sulfur. 'Its exact chemical and physical nature has remained poorly defined, because the term 'coal' refers to a broad range of coalified solids ranging in rank from anthracite to a variety of bituminous coals of differing volatile matter content, sub-bituminous coals, and ending with lignite and brown coals. The variation in chemical and physical properties through these ranks is massive. In summary, Luckie's (1988) assertion is apropos: ""There is no such thing as coal; there are coals"". The coal preparation engineer, and, most especially, those scientists and engineers from other disciplines wishing to work with coal, must constantly keep this admonition in mind because what is true for one coal seam is often not directly applicable to another."

A series of nineteen shear tests were performed on fractures 1 m2 in area, generated in blocks of sandstone, granite, tuff, hydro- stone and concrete. The tests were conducted under quasi-static and dynamic loading conditions. A vertical stress assisted fracturing technique was developed to create the fractures through the large test blocks. Prior to testing, the fractured surface of each block was characterized using the Barton JRC-JCS concept. The results of characterization were used to generate the peak strength envelope for each fractured surface. Attempts were made to model the stress path based on the classical transformation equations which assumes a theoretical plane, elastic isotropic properties, and therefore no slip. However, this approach gave rise to a stress path passing above the strength envelope which is clearly unacceptable. The results of the experimental investigations indicated that actual stress path is affected by the dilatancy due to fracture roughness, as well as by the side friction imposed by the boundary conditions. By introducing the corrections due to the dilation and boundary conditions into the stress transformation equation, the fully corrected stress paths for predicting the strength of fractured blocks were obtained.

Recent data contributions to New Zealand Mesozoic terrane geology confirm the consensus interpretation thatNew Zealand grew by the progressive addition of material by plutonic and accretionary processes along the Gondwana margin. The data also: 1. emphasise the discontinuous but inter-related nature of these processes of continental growth, 2. better establish a direct Gondwana correlation of the Western Province and probable Gondwana provenance of at least some of the Eastern Province, 3. suggest specific times and places when passive or strike-slip rather than subduction regimes are recorded along the south Gondwana margin, and 4. potentially lead to interpretations emphasising parautochthonous rather than far travelled relationships between many New Zealand terranes.

Mobile robots have been making impressive inroads in a variety of domains. Within the Mining-RoX project, Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg is exploring a further frontier for mobile and autonomous robots: underground mines. The potential benefits of mobile robots in underground mining are plentiful as underground mines are strenuous and potentially dangerous working environments for humans. A higher degree of automation, with robots either acting as helpers for human miners or even replacing all human personnel deployed underground, could help to significantly reduce mining costs. In disaster cases, rescue robots could help to find missing personnel. Unmanned mines operated by robots alone would not endanger human lives at all. Further use cases, and a particular focus of the Mining-RoX project, are mobile robots that gather sensory information of the underground mine (eg for the purpose of creating detailed 2D and 3D maps) as well as monitoring environmental conditions such as air and water quality. This paper presents the design of a prototypical mobile robot for mapping and monitoring underground mines. A generic robotic platform was extended with various 2D and 3D imaging devices as well as other sensors. First results from test runs in an underground mine are reported. Indoor localization has gained importance as it has the potential to improve various processes related to the lifecycle management of facilities and to deliver personalized and location-based services. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) based systems, on the other hand, have been widely used in different applications in construction and maintenance. This paper investigates the usage of RFID technology for indoor localization of RFID equipped movable assets during the operation phase of facilities. The location-related data on RFID tags attached to fixed assets are extracted from a Building Information Model (BIM) and can provide context-aware information inside the building which can improve Facilities Management (FM) processes. The paper proposes a new approach to use received signals from available reference tags in the building attached to fixed assets to locate movable assets. The approach uses signal pattern matching and clustering algorithms for localization. As a result, a user equipped with an RFID reader is able to estimate the location of target assets, without having access to any Real- Time Location System (RTLS) infrastructure. A case study is performed to demonstrate the feasibility of proposed methods.

The search for new alloys for application in the atomic energy field had prompted investigation of zirconium-rare earth metal alloys by the Federal Bureau of Mines. In this instance the zirconium-dysprosium system was investigated by melting point, thermal analysis, resistivity, X-ray and metallographic methods. Results indicate a single eutectic system with a peritectoid reaction occurring at 890° C. The eutectic isotherm extends from 30 to 95-percent dysprosium at 1,280° C. Eutectic composition is located at approximately 70 percent dysprosium. Solid solubility of dysprosium in both alpha and beta zirconium is extensive. The extent of solid solubility of zirconium in dysprosium has not been determined. Although zirconium rich alloys exhibit a significant increase in hardness, they can be cold worked extensively. These alloys also appear adaptable to solution heat treatment. Additional investigations concerning corrosion resistance and other mechanical properties are necessary for satisfactory evaluation of these alloys. The superior corrosion resistance of zirconium and the nuclear cross-section characteristics of the rare earth metals have stimulated alloy investigations using zirconium as a base metal. Alloys combining these characteristics present a possible substitute for hafnium as a control rod material. In this particular study dysprosium was chosen as the alloying element, and several series of alloys were used to establish the equilibrium diagram.

The Arrowhead Tunnels Project represents the final portion of a 70 km (44-mile) long water conveyance facility that will bring up to 28 m3/sec (1,000 ft3/sec) of water into Southern California. The 13 km (8-mile) tunneling project is well underway and consists of two, 5.8 m (19-foot) diameter TBM bores through extremely variable geological conditions. The tunnels lie near the base of the San Bernardino Mountains and several significant faults including the San Andreas Fault run within one kilometer (0.6 miles) of the tunnel alignment. Numerous other significant faults cross the tunnel alignment and water pressures in the tunnel have been recorded as high as 20 bar (300 psi). This paper describes some of the problems and challenges encountered and the solutions implemented to advance the two hybrid TBMs under conditions that ranged from hard rock with no water inflows to full-face granular material under 10-bar pressure and in excess of 32 l/sec (500 gpm) inflows. Due to the range and severity of ground and water conditions actually encountered, the Owner-Contractor-Designer team eventually found that adjusting the means and methods to be more responsive—virtually on a day-by-day basis—was needed to suit the conditions

By 1950, packaged oil and gas fired boilers were on the market for capacities up to 30,000 lbs./hr. By 1962, capacities were up to 100,000 lbs./hr. and even higher when separate heat traps (economizers and air preheaters) were attached to the boiler packages. During this period, complete packaged coal fired boilers were developed into the 10-15,000 lbs./hr. range. Oil and gas fired plant designs became very compact, "basementless", and far: less costly than the coal fired plants of any capacity. Coal fired plants remained large and expensive, required field erection of boilers and required basements. With the spectacular strides made in automation, oil and gas plants became far less costly to operate, requiring only the part-time attendance of a single operator. Some advances were made in coal fired plants, but not to the degree attained by the fluid fuel competition.

Conditional bias occurs when the expected value of the true grade conditional on the estimated grade is not equal to the estimated grade. It is a quantification of how the average of estimates differs from the true value. Conditional bias is present in all resource estimates due to the unavoidable properties of kriging, and indeed all linear estimation (regression) methods. In a mining resource estimation context, the degree of conditional bias is dependent on the spacing of the conditioning data; more data leads to the expectation of less conditional bias This paper discusses conditional bias from two perspectives: 1. 2. Estimates seeking to eliminate, as much as possible, conditional bias; and Estimates that accept a larger amount of conditional bias in resource models, in order to achieve a specific outcome. The problem of conditional bias in estimation can only be fully appreciated if the objective or purpose of a resource model is understood. There are instances where conditional bias should be avoided because it is not reasonable to make decisions using estimates that are known to be wrong in expected value; for example, when making a final decision in grade control with respect to the destination of the material. In most instances in the mining resource estimation context, however, the estimated values will not be “final estimates”, but “interim estimates”, meaning that in the future more data will be obtained, and the ”interim estimate” will then be updated. In this context, the most useful resource model is an interim model that is able to predict the final model estimates, despite not having all the data available that will be collected in the future. This is the objective, for example, of a recoverable “long-term” model developed prior to operating a mine, for example at the feasibility stage. It attempts to predict the ore that a processing plant will receive, well into the future. In such cases, it can be unequivocally demonstrated that conditional bias is not only unavoidable, it is a necessity.

"A walk through the exhibit hall or a glance at the technical programing that was offered at the 2019 SME Annual Conference & Expo and CMA 121st National Western Mining Conference in Denver, CO, Feb. 24-27 makes it evident that the mining industry is an innovative one that is on the cutting edge of technology. However, a glance at the nearly 6,700 attendees of the conference and it is also evident that while the industry is moving forward at a rapid pace in some areas, it is lagging behind in terms of diversity, both in gender and ethnicity.At Monday morning’s keynote session, Hannah Ubi, a millennial and a public speaker who joked that she is the proud owner of a sixth-place swimming trophy and a number of participation medals, addressed a full house that consisted of many men with gray hair or balding heads. The issue of an aging workforce that is rapidly being depleted by retirements is not a new one for the mining industry. In fact, it has been a concern for the industry for more than a decade. The central question has long been, “when the current senior-level people begin to retire, how do we replace them, and how do we fill the knowledge gap that is walking off into the sunset?” SME has been on the front lines in searching for solutions to the impending problem and, along with industry partners, has worked hard to develop programs that will address these issues. Among other efforts, the Society has developed a Ph.D. fellowship program to encourage people to remain in academia to teach the next generation and to help train the next generation to take over in the private sector.“The SME Foundation’s Ph.D. and Career Development Grant program is exceeding expectations at this point with two Ph.D. students graduating and taking a position in academia and two professors achieving tenure,” SME Executive Director Dave Kanagy said during the conference.The Society’s Minerals Education Coalition (MEC) has done its part to help educate future generations about the mining industry with initiatives like EngineerGirl, the Boy Scout Merit Badge and Move Mining, the Shark-Tank-style competition that was held on Monday with five finalists competing for the top prize (ME, April 2019, page 53)."

Since early 1970?s skirt suction foundations (skirted foundation / bucket foundation) have been used as support for large fixed substructures or anchors for floating structures in offshore hydrocarbon development projects. In recent years skirt suction foundations are recognized as one of the solutions in foundations applicable to bridge substructures installed in waters, because skirt foundations have a wide variety of functions such as control of settlement during service life, less impact to environments during operation at installation site. This paper introduces general features of skirt suction foundations, and then discusses design practice of them for the application to bridge substructures, with reference to experiments in both laboratory and field.

"Initiated in 2008, the project of this 1800 km long Electrical Transmission Line is a job of extreme technical complexity, crossing regions of major forests and rivers. When ready, it will allow the large Brazilian states of Amazonas, Amapá and Pará to use the energy from hydroelectric plants, thus eliminating the need for the use of diesel fuel thermal plants, with their much larger environmental footprint. Due to its extraordinary characteristics, the Green Peace and the Discovery Channel constantly visited the job. The part between the Amazon and the Xingu rivers started in 2012, and encompassed about 100 transmission towers with up to 150 m height, through a region known as “Alagados”. This region exhibits a 1.5 m water level during the rainy season, and soaked ground the rest of the year. Navigation of regular vessels is impossible during the flood season, when a dense vegetation called “bulhado” fills the riverbed, and vehicle traffic is impossible during the dry season, due to the extremely low surface soil resistance. Great logistical and technical difficulties were encountered for driving and determining the capacity of the piles. New systems had to be developed for driving the piles, with the simultaneous use of 15 small piling rigs. The final penetration, total number of hammer blows during driving, plus Dynamic and Static Load Tests were used for determining the driving and acceptance criteria.The geographical challenge and initial conditionsThis paper describes the execution of foundations for a 500 kV Electrical Transmission Line in a region that becomes flooded during the rainy season and heavily muddy during the dry season. This is the monsoon climate, typical of the equatorial region of Brazil, where there is a rainy season lasting for about half the year, followed by a very dry season. The temperature varies very little throughout the year, due to the proximity to the equator. The locals call the rainy season “winter” and the dry season “summer”.The most important part of the so-called “Alagados” region is situated inside an Environmental Extractive Reserve (RESEX) called “Verde para Sempre” (Forever Green), created in 2003. This is one of the largest environmental reserves in Brazil. It is an area controlled by the Brazilian Environmental Control Department, the Chico Mendes Institute (ICMBio). The environment control parameters are very strict.No deep foundation had ever been executed before along the “Alagados” region. The main challenge faced on this job, however, was working in a place where self-propelling vessels or land vehicles and equipment cannot be used. During the rainy season there is a dense and intricate vegetation called “bulhado”, which prevents the movement of outboard motor boats with propellers going deeper than 50 cm. In the dry season, the heavy mud prevents the movement of foundation equipment, excavators, trucks and other machinery."

The Caval Ridge Mine is an open cut coalmine and located within the Bowen Basin region in Central Queensland, and commenced mining and processing operations in 2014. A number of geotechnical challenges for managing dragline bench and lowwall stabilities have been encountered in both southern and northern pits over the years. Southern Pits contain steep seam dips of up to 15° (27 per cent) whilst the northern pits also have shears below pit floors. Geotechnical guidelines to manage the risk of dragline bench failure and lowwall instability have been developed and improved since these geotechnical challenges were identified. The dragline guidelines include dragline tub offset distances from the 60° Line (SDL) or buttressing thickness for different seam dips greater than or equal to 8°. The low wall stabilisation guideline established floor disruption widths and depths depending on seam dips and presence of floor shears to known depths of up to 3 m. As mining operations advance, lowwalls have remained stable until floor disruptions were fired, then returned to stable soon after the shot. The maximum distance of lowwall cracking with blasting has been as far back as the second spoil peak (the prestrip truck dumps construction limit). These failures need to be eliminated to allow the operational flexibility and haulage benefit of constructing the prestrip truck dumps behind the first spoil peak, while maintaining no risk to personnel or equipment. The floor shear depth was verified by collaborating with the exploration teams and taking advantage of the already planned 8-inch coal quality core holes, drilling them an extra 5–10 m past the coal seam floor and locating the shear presence. With this continuous improvement effort, no lowwall failures have occurred during floor disruption firing from the second strip after the new floor disruption depth guidance have been applied. This paper documents the processes for developing these geotechnical guidelines, operational implementation, and outcomes. Operational applications over the years confirmed that these guidelines have effectively managed the dragline bench and lowwall failure risks related with the steep seam dips and floor shears in this open cut coalmine.

THE year 1930 in the petroleum industry has been characterized by the establishment of large potential production of crude oil. This has resulted in closer cooperation between companies by proration and unit operation agreements in order to afford an equitable outlet to all, and to prevent a flood of oil being forced on the market with attendant tremendous material and economic waste. Drilling wells in proved areas and wildcat wells are fewer than in the past several years. Restricted production and low prices have caused greater effort to increase producing and recovery efficiencies. Increased refinery efficiencies have amplified the effect of overproduction. Pipe line departments have been especially busy. New oil lines have reached more refineries by new and shorter routes. Establishing greater gas reserves by new fields has justified new gas lines to industrial centers, and has brought this fuel to thousands of new domestic consumers. Two long gasoline lines, a new venture in pipe lines, are being built to obtain a lower cost of transportation and less loss between the refineries and their distribution centers. The chairmen of the various divisions have discussed the developments of their respective branches more fully in the following reviews.

Calcination of samples from the Savage River region of Thsmania containing varying magnesite/dolomite ratios under conditions optimized for the magnesite component, followed by carbonic acid leaching at elevated pressures, leads to leachates of varying composition. For a 3 per cent solids slurry leached at 15.5°C and 700 k Pa carbon dioxide, the leachates have magnesium concentrations in the range 0.71 - 13.2 g/litre. The corresponding magnesium extraction data are 12.5 - 86.4 per cent. The variation in leachate composition would be unacceptable in terms of continuous processing, so that a feed of "constant" composition is essential. Selective mining and physical beneficiation to remove the bulk of the dolomite do not appear to be practical. It is concluded that the most appropriate method of feed preparation is to carry out extensive blending of the magnesite/dolomite ore and the resultant calcine.

Titanium is an exciting structural material that can offer significant strength-to-weight advantages over currently used alloys. However, its Achilles? heel is its costly, energy-intensive production process that effectively eliminates it from competing with aluminium and high-strength steels, apart from critical applications where titanium forms only a small component of the total cost. Current attempts are being made to reduce the cost of titanium products and these recognize the importance of minimizing the costs over the total production chain. Powder metallurgy (PM) technologies play a crucial role within this, as the output of the existing and potential primary metal production methods is in the form of sponge or powder. By using PM, costly remelting and forming operations can then be avoided, except in the manufacture of large components. Metal injection moulding (MIM) is an effective process for producing complex net-shape components in large volumes from metal powders. Nevertheless, the commercial use of titanium powders in this process is still in its infancy. The only major supplier of feedstock utilizes a polyacetal-based binder. This gives good green strength but requires a catalytic nitric acid process to remove most of the binder prior to thermal treatment. As this involves additional and expensive equipment and is a potentially hazardous process, there is interest in finding an alternative binder system that can be debound either purely thermally or that involves a less hazardous, more environmentally friendly solvent. This paper describes the use of capillary rheometry to characterize the influence of temperature and shear rates on the flow behaviour of potential binder systems for titanium MIM feedstock. More complex ore bodies with lowering grades increase the challenges of maintaining high throughput, energy efficiency and required particle size for optimal downstream processing in grinding circuits. Continuous and often rapidly changing characteristics of the mill feed requires constant focus to operate the circuit at optimal level. Modern process instruments, on-line analyzers, monitoring and process control systems provide attractive and managed options to increase the circuits’ capability to respond to the challenge, often in phases and in rather short time period. Furthermore, well instrumented and performing base level automation in the grinding circuit enables advanced process control (APC) strategies that utilize measurements from the whole circuit to stabilize and optimize production. In this paper alternatives for incorporating process measurements and controls to typical grinding circuits are proposed. The following note on the mineral association in the ores of the Tennant Creek Goldfield, Northern Territory, is largely based on Mineragraphic Reports Nos. 49, 89, 117 and 193 of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. These reports are the results of the examinations of auriferous specimens from a number of mines of the goldfield and are now supplemented by the examination of further specimens from Mt. Samuel forwarded by Mr. V. G. Martin.The Tennant Creek Goldfield lies in the central portion of the Northern Territory, about Lat. 190 35', Long. 1340 15', on the Overland Telegraph Line and about 369 miles north of Alice Springs. It comprise an area extending about 50 miles east and west, by 30 miles north and south.The geology of the goldfield has been described by Woolnough. (2)The rocks of the area are of pre-Cambrian age, and consist of talcose, chloritic, micaceous and siliceous schists of sedimentary origin, interbedded with flows or dykes of schistose quartz porphyry, and of granites which were intruded subsequent to the regional metarporphism of the area. The rocks are moderately folded, but the beclding tends to be obscured by a pronounced east-west cleavage. The most continuous orebodies run east and west, parallel with this cleavage.Numerous lenses of hematite occur in the schists, with their long axes, parallel to the cleavage, and the gold values of the field are frequently associated with such hematite bodies. The dimensions of these hematite bodies are variable but rarely exceed a length of 300 ft., with an average thickness between 10 and 30 ft.; the original vertical dimensions are thought to be comparable with their length. The lenses tend to occur in groups when they are arranged en echelon both horizontally and in depth; and erosion has exposed individual lenses to different degrees, ranging from incipient exposure to complete removal. The existence of unexposed hematite lenses at depth has been proved by geophysical surveys, coupled with drilling tests. (3)A few of the bodies are pipe-like. Many are surrounded by a casing of brecciated rock, composed of fragments of hematite and shattered country rock, and presumably caused by subsequent earth movements which crushed the country rock against the resistant hematite bodies. In the early days of the field most of the important gold occurences were found within these crushed zones, or, to a less extent, within the hematite bodies themselves.These occurrences appeared to be associated only with those hematite lenses which were intersected by quartz veins or other lines of weakness, of later origin than the crushing.
