Thank you, Syd, for the kind introduction and for inviting me to give the Keynote Address at this very prestigious gathering of some of the finest intellect and talent in the domestic and international coal industry. CONSOL Energy has been a part of this conference for its entire 24-year existence. We have presented 27 papers over that time. CONSOL employees have also been members of the planning committee for the conference, and we have been pleased to support the event both financially and with many participants. So I am honored to be here with all of you this morning, especially during such a positive period for coal. You can just feel the enthusiasm in this room for our industry, and for this conference. I can tell you, there?s also a lot of enthusiasm and excitement in CONSOL Energy?s boardroom. And our enthusiasm is mirrored on Wall Street. But there remains an ironic twist to all of this attention. Even when times are good, the coal industry seems to go largely unnoticed by the mainstream. Outside of West Virginia and other coal-producing regions, the industry still seems to lack influence and support, at least here in America. As an example, last month, an ABC News crew visited our Blacksville 2 Mine, near here, to do a feature story on increased employment in the coal industry.

In this paper, the molybdenite flotation tailing of cleaner-scavenger bank which has a mass of very fine particles has been taken as raw ore to be processed by flotation with/without ultrasonic. The effect of ultrasonic frequency, intensity, processing time and uploading location on molybdenite flotation efficiency is investigated by four-factor three-level orthogonal experiment, and the effect significances of these ultrasonic variables to molybdenite flotation efficiency have also been evaluated. Single-factor analysis of variance is conducted to investigate whether the effect of ultrasonic on molybdenum ore flotation efficiency is significant or not. The samples extracted from different ore species in different time have been mixed to analyze the particle size. The results show that the particle size of +38µm in concentrate obviously increases while the particle size of -25µmobviouslydecreaseswith ultrasonic, which means that ultrasonic is good for flotation due to sludge removing effect. "To optimize the process variables for making direct reduced iron (DRI) by microwave heating, the reduction temperature, reduction time and the ratio of coal to material were studied with the central composite design (CCD) and their interactions on the Metallization rate were also investigated. The predictive polynomial quadratic equations model was analyzed by ANOVA. Optimal conditions of making DRI can be concluded as follows: 28 min at 1139?, the ratio of coal to material is 20.95%. Under these conditions, the metallization rate is up to 97.06%.1. IntroductionThere are some technical problems in making direct reduced iron (DRI) or sponge iron using iron ore concentrates containing coal and lime. In reduction of the iron ore concentrates containing coal with microwave heating, the strength of pellets needn’t to be considered. It reduces the costs and improve quality of materials, but also eliminates the need for pellet preparation process, simplifying the process and achieving a cleaner production.Microwave energy is a clean energy, and has characteristic of selective heating. The speed of heating is also fast. It researched by Chen Jin that when the mole mass of C: O is 0.627 and the microwave power is 15KW, it only spends 15min from 15? to 1021.6? with 1 kg iron ore containing coal with microwave heating [1]. There are many factors affecting metallization rate. In order to find a suitable condition for reduction process, it is necessary to design a series of suitable experiments.Response surface methodology (RSM) is one of the relevant multivariate techniques which can deal with multivariant experimental design strategy, statistical modeling and process optimization [2–5]. It is used to examine the relationship between one or more response variables and a set of quantitative experimental variables or factors. This method is often employed after the identification of the vital controllable factors to find the factor settings that optimize the response. Designs of this type are usually chosen when a curvature in the response surface is suspected. The process optimization of the microwave reduced iron ore was seldom reported in literature. Hence the present work intends to assess the effects of variables such as reduction time, reduction temperature and the ratio of coal to identify the optimum conditions using a central composite design (CCD). The characteristic of product was assessed using scanning electron microscope (SEM)."

This paper describes an installation of a medium-voltage adjustable frequency motor drive (AFD) on a high starting torque regrinding mill. This type of application is typically found in the mineral industry dealing with hard ore. The AFD electrical architecture is introduced from line to load. The type of closed loop encoder feedback motor control algorithm is briefly described. The results of the AFD motor identification auto-tuning are compared against the manufacturer’s supplied data. The motor drive performance results are shown for pre-ramp DC fluxing, high starting torque with overload current, excessive load torque stall condition, and blocked rotor. The instrumentation and arrangement for the two watt-meter method to capture low frequency data are presented. The data shown is from the input power quality meter, the AFD computer tool, the output motor protection relay, an oscilloscope, and load shaft connected strain gauge (rotating telemetry for torque assessment). These types of high starting torque constant torque loads are found in mining and process industry applications employing AC adjustable frequency drives. Using field results should help demystify the use of voltage matching output transformers in AFD applications including constant torque loads

If you are contemplating starting a small coal mining operation there is a good possi¬bility that you can not afford it. If you, have already started, you may be on the road to bankruptcy. If you are a small but well established operator you may be trading dollars, or even dissipating your capital, equipment and other assets. A bleak outlook? Yes! Meant to be discouraging? No! Just a reminder that, with todays costs of doing business, high interest rates, rapidly increasing costs and decreasing sales prices, a small businessman/miner had best watch closely or he will be mired in something worse than a soft bottom - namely a cash and credit shortage, and in too many instances In recent times, bankruptcy. We will not dwell on what happens once you are that far gone, though I could cite a good example. But, let us look at what should be done to avoid such a catastrophe.

INTRODUCTION I WELCOME the opportunity to speak on Programmes in Safety. The invitation to do so shows that those guiding affairs of the Institute in this District realize the practical importance of this subject. My remarks are intended primarily for mines having 100 to 400 employees, approximately. With minor modifications, however, they apply also to larger or smaller operations. Others, I hope, will derive benefit from this paper, for they, too, have a part to play in accident prevention; for example, contractors such as shaft-sinkers; manufacturers of equipment; and consultants and designers of mining, milling, and metallurgical methods. These troubled times stress, as never before, the importance of efficient operations in mining. The days are gone when neglect can be afforded. Safe working conditions and satisfied employees are essential for efficient production at reasonable cost. The mining industry of Ontario long has been keenly aware of the human aspects of this subject, and as a whole it has done much to decrease the frequency and severity of disabling accidents. The number of fatalities per 1,000 employees has been reduced from a high of 5 some two decades ago to an all-time low of 0.89 in 1948; the incidence was slightly higher in 1949, being 1.17 per 1,000. The reduction in non-fatal compensable accidents also has been outstanding, frequency having ?been reduced from over 200 per 1,000 employees some two decades ago to 54 per 1,000 at the producing mines in 1949. These statistics demonstrate progress. Nevertheless, the general picture still leaves much to be desired when viewed from two other angles.

"This paper deals with the flotability of stibnite and summarizes the major experiences and technological innovations of some typical practices of antimony sulfide ores in China. Experiences of cyanide-free and -less flotation of complex antimony sulfide ores and the application of the heavy media process to the preconcentration are described.Performance improvements obtained by innovations in operating techniques are also outlined and discussed. Technical innovations involve: (1) ramification roughing and differential-rate cleaning of stibnite-arsanopyrite ore; (2) the application of the new flotation reagent system; (3) process of separation flotation of Sb-Hg bulk concentrate; (4) extraction of gold from Au-Sb bulk concentrate; (5) flotation recovery of coarse stibnite particles.IntroductionChina is rich in natural resources of antimony and is one of the major antimony producers in the world. During the past several decades, a lot of research works have been done and many experiences in milling practices were gained, some of which are summarized briefly as follows.I. Heavy Media separation of Antimony sulfide Ore at Xikuangshan Hill, Hunan province (1)HMS as a technique of preconcentration of antimony ore has been performed more than ten years in China with good results.1. Ore characteristics The antimony ore of Xikuangshan belongs to the epithermal- metasomatic-filled doposit of antimony sulfide. Major minerals are stibnite (92.1%), antimony oxides (7.9%) and a small amount of pyrite and pyrrhotite; the gangue minerals are quartz, silicic limestone, calcite, hydrous kaolin, sericite, barite and others. The specific gravity of the ore is 2.8 and the specific gravity of stibnite and gangue are 4.6 and 2.654, respectively."

Magnesia minerals are included in most iron ore sinter mixes to provide the MgO requirements of blast furnace slag. The properties of these minerals have an influence on the eventual sintering properties of the mixes. A detailed study was undertaken of serpentine and dolomite and the use of limestone, olivine and magnesite was also investigated. A consideration of particle properties indicated that as these materials calcine a reduction in size can occur together with cracking and changes in surface properties. These changes could affect the permeability of the sintering bed and sintering performance. Studies of sintering reactions showed that magnesium and calcium, formed from the calcination of dolomite, are extremely mobile before the formation of melt. Evidence suggests that the movement of these oxides into surrounding areas is via a solid-state diffusion process. The diffusion of Ca into the surrounding hematite particles is faster than that of Mg, resulting in the formation of dicalcium ferrite and magnetite or magnesioferrite, the last two subsequently being converted to dicalcium ferrite in the presence of Ca with removal of Mg from the structure as ferroan periclase. Studies of pilot-plant sinters indicated that reaction mechanisms formulated from the bench-scale studies were occurring in actual sintering processes. The differences in sintering reactions between dolomite and serpentine were considered to be the major cause of differences in the availability of lime for bonding phase formation. Pilot-scale studies indicated that the sintering properties of a mix containing dolomite could be improved by increasing the basicity of the sinter mix while keeping the MgO level constant

Regions with extensive reserves of brown coal but with inadequate deposits of hard coal provide a particularly suitable field for the application of brown coal petrology.In fact, this discipline is indispensable where brown coal is to form the basis for high-quality products of upgrading. Both chemical and physical analyses are required in addition to the techniques employed in coal petrology, but it is the macropetrographic and the microscopic investigations that are of decisive and specific importance.Foremost among the methods of upgrading brown coal is briquetting. From the raw materials aspect the biochemical rank of coal (i.e. the type of deposit) and the coal variety (i.e. the lithotype) exert a marked influence on briquette strength. These are also the significant factors in the suitability of a brown coal for high temperature carbonization; here the demands on coal quality are even more exacting if adequately sintered and therefore high-strength lump chars are to be obtained. The principle applies also to the char from low temperature carbonization. There are close relationships between the tar yield and the remission of the coal.The reflectivity measurement therefore provides a rapid method for evaluating the suitability of a brown coal for low temperature carbonization. Similar correlations have been established between the content of extraction bitumen (raw montan wax) and the remission. Petrological investigations show that the quality of the coal bitumen is a function of the type of deposit and of the lithotype.

Over half of the molten aluminium produced at the 52,000 tons/ year eapacity plant operated by Comalco Aluminium (Bell Bay) Limited in Tasmania is cast into saleable produets by the direct chill process. Considering the importance of direct chill casting to the aluminium industry it is surprising that so little published literature on the subject is available, although Easton (1947), Smart (1954), and Uppert (1940, 1944, 1945) have contributed much toward lifting the veil of secrecy surrounding the process.The direct chill, or D.C. process as it is commonly called when related to aluminium, consists basically of feeding molten aluminium or its alloys into; water-cooled mould from the bottom of which solid aluminium is continuously extracted. Although the casting procedure is continuous in principle, the equipment is normally operated in an intermittent manner. Castings up to 20 ft long are formed during a cycle. At the end of the cycle casting is stopped and the pit into which thc castings are dropped is cleared before a new cycle commences. Depending on the size of the casting in relation to the cross sectional area of the pit and the support mechanism (commonly a hydraulic ram), 'drops' of up to 15 tons are not uncommon. This method of D.C. casting IS termed vertical D.C. casting and is the one most commonly employed in the aluminium industry.Horizontal casting has come more to the fore in recent years with the casting being extracted from the mould in the horizontal plane and is a truly continuous casting method since flying saws can be simply used to cut the continuously cast shape into required lengths as it emerges from the mould...

PRESIDENT SORENSON: The meeting will come to order, gentlemen. I note from the program here this morning that you were supposed to have an address by the president. I can assure you, gentlemen, that the president is not going to make an address, so you don't need to squirm in your chairs. I do want to say it's certainly a pleasure to be here. I am sorry that I wasn't here last year. Apparently my absence lent consent, and I think it would be a good warning to every member of the organization to be here for all the meetings for your own protection! It's always a pleasure to be here and meet again with some of our old friends and meet a lot of new ones. It always interests me at these meetings to meet with the rugged individuals that operate the coal industry. They have to be rugged; they couldn't be any other type of men and live in it. I also know that it takes a good rugged man to fight this game nowadays. I feel that the men who operate the coal industry are fighting a battle against socialism. You all know we are the first industry they have their eyes on. If they take over our industry, they will take over everything else.

When RFQ?s are received they often contain detailed technical specifications which suggest a departure from the suppliers own customary approach to the design. Both client and end user are quite rightly influenced by their own experiences. The question is who is right, the client and his consultant, the supplier or perhaps a combination of these. This paper looks at some of the fundamental variances that often occur in the approach to the mechanical design of drum hoists, based on our experiences of recent years. Industrial Minerals production in New Zealand is limited in both quantity and range, but imported in quantities that make New Zealand the world's biggest consumer per head of population. The use of industrial minerals is assured as both population and standard of living increase regularly. But to develop these minerals in the New Zealand environment requires the mineral, or its market (both local and export), to have characteristics that negate the remote geographical location. Volume and/or uniqueness can achieve this.

In the Evraz Highveld production process, iron ore is prereduced in rotary kilns prior to charging into submerged arc furnaces (SAFs). Owing to the highly aggressive slags that are formed within the combustion zones of these kilns, chrome-oxide-containing lowcement castables have been used for some years in the kiln lining. Due to concerns around the potentially harmful effects should Cr(V1) be present in the spent linings, Highveld and its suppliers of kiln castables devoted time to developing alternative chrome-free lining materials. Such materials needed to be cost-effective and ensure good performance and improved kiln availability. This paper discusses all the parameters surrounding this development. The addition of a force gage and a reaction detector to the Bureau of Mines drop-weight impact apparatus made it possible to examine the details of the force exerted on the specimen and make estimates of the time to reaction. With the current setup the force was found to be oscillatory and not reproducble. However, single well-defined pressure pulses can be delivered to the explosive sample by modifying the drop-weight tools. With a modified test arrangement, the time to reaction and the peak force and energy at the time of reaction were determined as a function of drop-weight height for several different explosives. All these parameters were found to decrease as the rate of force application was increased. The same parameters were also found to vary with the thickness of the test sample. The implications of these results are discussed in terms of practical drop-weight testing.

SAG mill liner development draws primarily on practical experience from SAG milling operations supported by computer-based modeling of charge motion in SAG mills and on established good design practice. Liner design needs to respond to the process aspects of mill liner action that are critical to good SAG mill performance, i.e., the impact of shell liners on the grinding action and of grates and pulp lifters on pulp discharge. In recent years, the trend in large SAG mills has been to use wide-spaced shell lifters with large lifter face angles, primarily to reduce packing and ball/liner damage, and to use larger, hence fewer, mill liner parts to reduce downtime at liner change-outs.

The process of various zirconium alloys iodination by the iodine vapor was investigated. The nature of impurities, conditions of iodination, iodine flow rate, and zirconium tetraiodide condensation rate effect on the metal impurities transfer process was analyzed, both qualitative and quantitative correlations were established. Impurities were classified according their transfer extent. Another classification of impurities transport dependence on iodination process temperature was also offered. Obtained results were compared with impurities transport data in the process of iodide refining available in literature. Some impurities transport mechanisins and iodide-refined metals improvement possibility by means of iodination conditions control were discussed.

D.C. United, the professional soccer team located in Washington, D.C., completed a 20,000 seat capacity stadium in July 2018 named Audi Field. The project initially considered a foundation system consisting of roughly 800 prestressed concrete driven piles configured in groups with pile caps. A value engineering alternative proposed in a design-build manner ultimately resulted in the use of 300 single element Auger Cast Piles (ACPs) for the foundation system. The ACPs ranged between 1.5 ft and 4 ft in diameter, were up to 85 ft in length, and were connected through a system of grade beams to accommodate large lateral induced loads. Limitations in conventional analytical methods were encountered during the structural design of the piles due to the complexity of the lateral loading and pile fixity conditions. An innovative approach using advanced finite element modeling that incorporated the framing effects of the grade beams was required to meet the strict movement criteria despite large lateral loads.
