In line with the 2015 Paris Agreement and corresponding climate disclosure requirements, many mining companies have publicly disclosed that they are developing and/or implementing ambitious decarbonisation strategies. Sometimes these strategies can be linked to the development of community programs and/or the creation of a positive legacy post-closure. Renewable power is key to most decarbonisation strategies – some mines will get this from external sources and others will establish on-site power generation and storage facilities. A range of options are available to develop renewable power generation (eg solar panel, wind farm, hydropower) and energy storage (eg battery, hydrogen, pumped hydroelectricity). Land access, impact assessments, planning and environmental approvals are required to establish new facilities. Host communities are more likely to be in favour of, or at least will accommodate, new power supply developments if these are planned with a benefit to the communities. Transitioning to renewables raises new challenges. Among these are high upfront costs and access to capital, energy demand variability, supply intermittency and variability, storage limitations, grid stability and reliability, transmission and distribution infrastructure constraints. Compounding these challenges are issues such as infrastructure resilience to extreme weather events (eg heat, wind), land use and access, lengthy permitting processes, community perceptions, skilled labour requirements, and meeting mine closure objectives. Renewable energy sources provide a more decentralised source of energy that reduces reliance on imported fuels, thereby increasing energy security and lowering production costs. On the contrary, implementing renewable energy could lead to potential negative impacts such as visual perception from the community, competitive land usage, electricity price raises due to upgrading infrastructure and the use of electricity storage capacities. As part of the definition of an environmental and social management plan, participative stakeholder engagement is required to identify benefits to the communities. For example, among the recognised benefits of developing solar panels (increase job opportunities, reduce soil erosion), various technologies have been experimented globally for the last ten years and are emerging due to their proven community benefits. Key findings to enhance those benefits can range from the development of innovative practices such as ‘agri-/aqua-voltaic’, ‘solar grazing’ to optimise land usage and stimulate the local economy (Table 1), to the implementation of technologies providing services to communities such as mobile water desalination plants or ‘smart grid’ systems to minimise energy clipping during peak-load of oversized renewable energy facilities (Table 2). While developing those synergies, careful management is required to avoid creating superfluous energy service needs from community programs. Energy sufficiency should remain a key principle according to the sufficiency, efficiency and renewable framework of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Darby and Fawcett (2018) define energy sufficiency has ‘a state in which people’s basic needs for energy services are met equitably and ecological limits are respected’. Sufficiency tackles the causes of the environmental impacts of human activities by avoiding the demand for energy and materials over the life cycle of buildings and goods. Efficiency tackles the symptoms of the environmental impacts of human activities by improving energy and material intensities. The third pillar, renewables, tackles the consequences of the environmental impacts of human activities by reducing the carbon intensity of energy supply (Cabeza et al, 2022). These can be considered to enhance stakeholders’ support for implementation of decarbonisation strategies.

The various types of risks that arise in minerals industry projects are usually financial, technical, or environmental, and the key to valid risk analysis is complete integration of all risks, both within and between categories. Geographical information systems (GIS) and geostatistical simulation methods can provide a means of integrating data and conducting realistic risk analyses. Risk can be quantified but there are limitations to numerical approaches to risk assessment. Realistic quantification requires adequate models of the processes that give rise to risk. Risk perception must also be taken into account when conducting risk assessment and reporting the results, especially in public forums. The modelling and visualisation capabilities of a combined GIS/simulation system can provide the means of dealing with perception in risk analysis

Iron ores obtained from different sources differ in their chemical and physical properties. These variations make the process of grinding a difficult task. The work carried out in this context focuses on three different samples of iron ore, viz., high silica high alumina, low silica high alumina, and low silica low alumina. The grinding process for all the three iron ores is carried out individually in Bond’s ball mill and the total retention time taken by each iron ore sample is calculated. The present investigation focuses on utilizing the calculated retention time of the iron ore as a standard grinding reference time to the laboratory ball mill for optimizing the grinding time of each ore. The desired P80 (150 μm) with an acceptable range of hematite liberation (> 75%) was obtained in the laboratory ball mill after reducing 6 min from the total retention time taken in the Bond ball mill.

Embankment piles are common in the Scandinavian countries (Kjellman, 1940) and in Southeast Asia as support of fills, light structures, bridge abutments and deep excavations (Eide, 1968) as described in the following. Untreated timber piles are often used for light structures and shallow fills when the ground water level is high since they are inexpensive and readily available. When the applied loads are relatively high precast concrete piles and steel piles are preferred. DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS Embankment piles carry the load from a fill or a struc-ture either through skin friction along the sides of the piles (Fig. 1a) or through a precast concrete slab or through pile caps at the top of the piles (Fig. 1b). When the load is carried by skin friction it is often economical to use small diameter timber piles because of the large surface area (Asplund, 1939). For precast concrete or steel piles concrete caps are used to transfer the load to the piles due to the relatively high capacity of the piles since the skin friction resistance alone is not sufficient to transfer the load to the piles.

Two drilled shaft foundations were subjected to axial load tests in order to measure the influence of drilling fluid on performance. Other than the differing drilling fluids, the shafts were constructed with great care to ensure identical conditions. The results indicate superior performance in both side shear and base resistance of the shaft constructed using a polymer over that of the shaft constructed using bentonite drilling slurry.

In anticipation of RCRA reauthorization and subsequent rulemakings, the Bureau of Mines is studying potential economic impacts of RCRA on mining. For U.S. copper heap and dump leaching operations in a variety of terrains, the cost of liners and closure caps to comply with RCRA Subtitle D ranges from $55 million to $158 million per site, or about $500,000 per hectare ($200,000 per acre). If RCRA technology requirements and financial assurance had been required on current operations, 27 to 100% of production from heap and dump leaching would have been non-competitive at market prices between $2,310 and $1,650 per metric ton ($1.047 and $0.75 per pound) copper. This result is based on an analysis that considers return on capital, corporate overhead, marketing, and freight costs as well as operating and maintenance costs at the mine. Over the same price range, economic analysis using the IMPLAN input-output model on one-or two-county regions indicates potential net job losses of about 570 to 2,700 jobs. Total economic output of those counties could be reduced by about $180 million to $360 million.

Aguas Argentinas,1 a consortium managed by Lyonnaise des Eaux of France and operator of the world’s biggest privatized water supply and waste water collection system for the City of Buenos Aires, a city of 9 million people, was faced with the daunting task of providing new service to 1.6 million more people in the first five years of their 30 year concession. Aguas Argentinas elected to use the Negotiated Compressed Process - NCP - for the fast track implementation of a 15000 meter, 3,5 meter diameter tunnel, a key component of the infrastructure master plan. NCP was developed by Klohn Crippen for the $200 million international railway tunnel between Canada and the United States. The conceptual design of the project was performed by Safege Montgomery-Watson, who engaged Klohn Crippento assist with the NCP, the preparation of the tender documents, and implementation of theproject during construction. The process included the purchase by the client Aguas Argentinas of two sophisticated 4 metre diameter earth pressure balance tunnel boring machines from Herrenknecht of Germany. Construction of the tunnel is being performed by the consortium Wayss & Freytag (Germany) and Sollazzo Hnos S.A. (Argentina). The water tunnel is being built with a one pass, bolted segmented gasketed reinforced concrete liner. The purpose of this paper is to describe a transferable methodology for this innovative contracting procedure, the project organization and quality control plan for this important world class tunnel project which is designed to service one of Latin America’s largest metropolitan areas.

THE township of Costerfield is situated in the parish of Costerfield, county of Dalhousie, and lies 6 miles east of Heathcote and 30 miles south-east of Bendigo. It is separated from Heathcote by the Mt. Ida Range, which forms the western boundary of the Silurian formation. It is situated at the head-waters of Tin-pot Creek, a small southerly tributary of the Deegay Ponds Creek, which flows east to the Goulburn River.The field was discovered in 1860 by two prospectors, Coster and Field, who were guided there by a shepherd, M Nicol Coster and Field had already discovered an antimony lode about three miles nearer Heathcote, when M Nicol offered to guide them to the larger outcrop. The main Costerfield reef at that time projected above the surface, and was white through oxidation, though the bluey sulphide showed on fracture. No alluvial gold of any consequence was obtained at Costerfield, but a little was obtained, at Redcastle, 7 miles to the north, and in some of the gullies to the east.Following its discovery there came a period of prosperity to Costerfield, while the mining operations were confined to the oxidized zone. The early success of mining at Costerfield was due to the gold values, and it is probable that the oxidized zone was secondarily enriched. The earliest available record of values is a crushing of Coster and Co. on the Antimony reef (now known as the Costerfield reef), when 200 tons from a depth of 70 ft. averaged 4 oz. per ton in July, 1861. At this time a crushing mill had not yet been erected at Costerfield, and the ore was carted and treated at Redcastle. The massive antimony ore, consisting of mixed oxides and sulphides, was separated by hand-picking as "marketable ore," and the remainder crushed for gold. A higher average is recorded from South Costerfield in September, 1861, when a 15' cwt. parcel...

"The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) operations in Labrador and Quebec, in Canada, is among the largest openpit mining complexes on a world wide basis. Since the 1981-82 recession, IOC has embarked on a comprehensive cost reduction and productivity improvement program in order to survive in the world iron ore market.This paper will outline the approach used in prioritizing the cost reduction items.IntroductionMuch of the mining industry in North America is in a crisis state. Most producers are operating at production levels well below capacity, some have been merged or sold, while others have been mothballed or closed permanently. For many of us still operating, the future is uncertain. Despite the many cutbacks and closures, there is still an abundant supply of minerals in the world market and there is almost no hope for any relief on price pressures on most mineral commodities in the near future. The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) operates an iron ore mine, a concentrator and a pellet plant known as the Carol Project located in Labrador City, Newfoundland. This concentrator and the pellet plant have the annual capacity to produce 20 million and 10 million tons respectively. A company owned and operated railway links this operation with the dock terminal facilities in Sept-Iles, Quebec.In the past decade the Iron Ore Company of Canada has been one of the largest producers of iron ore products in the world. Its pellets and concentrates as well as natural ores were sold in North America, Europe and the Far East. In 1981-82, sales, particularly in North America, went into a serious decline. For almost 30 years, the gospel IOC preached to employees was ""production, production!"" There were many innovations, and millions of dollars were spent on the biggest and best equipment, on research and development, on training and developing employees."

The preparation of coal for the commercial market is a study both varied and wide, and can be viewed from many angles and in different ways. This short paper can but touch upon the subject and is intended to discuss briefly preparation plants which in some cases would seem to be quite inadequate. The conditions confronting most operators are similar, inasmuch as the existing plants were not built specifically to prepare a product for the market of today, but rather of yesterday. The tremendous strides made in the field of combustion in recent years require that the product be of the highest grade procurable, and in a glutted and somewhat restricted market the buyer may be more pernickety than otherwise. These would appear to be the conditions of today. Where a mine is operated individually, better all-round results seem more readily procurable than in a consolidated effort where so many different conditions are sure to arise demanding cognizance, and in many cases requiring to be incorporated in the scheme of things. In the case of a number of mines being administered to form a central source, that source not having had anything to do with the bringing into being of the institutions over which it presides, we find some of the mines well equipped with facilities to properly screen and load the coal, while in others the facilities are not so good, but are doing their share towards delivering a product that will pass muster and in such quantities that they can be counted on.

INTRODUCTION Geotechnical investigations for tunneling projects typically use vertical test borings and, to a lesser extent, angled borings. Horizontal drilling applications were often limited to specialty testing programs and to perform probe drilling from a tunnel boring machine (TBM) as part of production tunneling. The former often involved cumbersome setups with skid rigs and cribbing in a pilot tunnel or shaft. The latter usually was limited to generic probing for rock quality and ground water conditions with no sampling. Neither yielded continuous core at production rates suitable for design and construction planning. Conventional vertical investigations still make sense in many instances, particularly for tunnels planned beneath urban settings where truck access is convenient and where the tunnel horizon is not readily accessible via a portal or shaft. However, equipment is presently available to conduct horizontal geotechnicall investigations at reasonable production rates and cost. Advantages include continuously sampling the tunneling horizon and minimizing “access drilling” to get the zone of interest at the underground construction horizon. Horizontal boring lengths of up to approximately 800 m are considered feasible and those in the range of 150 to300 m are now routine. These capabilities make horizontal borings an attractive option to consider when looking at deep tunnels beneath ridges, especially where access is limited. Fewer drilling staging sites can also mean reduced environmental impacts when investigating tunnels proposed beneath sensitive lands such as public wilderness areas. Investment in early construction packages to develop portals for investigation access and, possibly in excavating test shafts for the same purpose should even be considered. Potential benefits in the form of achieving improved overall project costs using horizontal borings exist because of the significant additional data collected in the tunnel horizon. For this reason they should be considered during the routine cost-benefit analyses generally conducted for planning geotechnical investigations for tunneling. Mechanical sampling provides a definitive value for the product sampled but the results are not instantaneous, meaning that decisions on process control can only be made hours after the sample is taken. Chemicals are added, tailings are sent to waste, stockyards are laid and the data for the decision-making is historical. Online analysers provide instantaneous information, allowing operators to make immediate and cost-saving decisions on the process. However, pending the specific online analysis application, there is a need for reference sampling for dynamic calibration/bias updating of the analysers so that they can deliver the desired precision and accuracy. What would be the economic justification for combining mechanical sampling with online analysis to reduce laboratory costs and provide immediate process control with certainty of accuracy? "The Permanent Canal Closures and Pumps (PCCP) project is the capstone piece of New Orleans’ extensive hurricane risk-reduction system constructed following Hurricane Katrina. The project consists of three discrete pump stations and flood gates on the shore of Lake Pontchartrain which provide a storm surge barrier and pump rainwater from the City of New Orleans’ primary drainage canals. The depth of the pump station structures ranged between 39 and 45 feet below sea-level. USACE developed the PCCP project for design-build delivery; granting the project team latitude to develop innovative, cost effective solutions for the project. The use of OPEN CELLTM cofferdams to construct the pump station structures was one such innovation. OPEN CELL structures utilize the strength of the retained soil to anchor cellular sheet pile face arcs; allowing a free-field of construction within the cofferdam. This cofferdam design did not require ground improvement or dewatering around the perimeter of the cofferdam. The free-field cofferdams streamlined construction and large equipment installation within the structures with no encumbrance from internal bracing. Meticulous force-based design, soil-structure numerical modeling, and physical testing were all techniques used to present and gain USACE acceptance of the design on this vital element of the work.PROJECT DESCRIPTIONThe Permanent Canal Closures and Pumps (PCCP) project is the capstone piece of the City of New Orleans’ extensive hurricane risk-reductions system constructed following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The project encompasses three separate pump stations and floodgate structures located at the mouths of three outfall canals (17th Street, Orleans, and London) on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain. These three canals, running from the south to north, act as the primary conduits for discharging water from the New Orleans area. Prior to Hurricane Katrina, these canals were operated with pump stations two to three miles upstream of the mouths at Lake Pontchartrain. This left long stretches of levee on each side of the canals exposed to storm surges entering from the lake. Three levee failures occurred along these canals during Katrina; two at London Canal and one at 17th Street Canal. The failures resulted in major flooding of the surrounding neighborhoods, significant damages, and loss of life.Following initial canal levee repairs after Hurricane Katrina, USACE, in partnership with the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA), took action to move the line of flood protection to the mouths of these three canals at the edge of the lake. By cutting off the storm surges from Lake Pontchartrain at the entrance to the canal, over ten miles of canal levee would no longer be exposed to storm surge water elevations, significantly decreasing the risk of failure."

Aços multiconstituídos têm aplicações voltadas principalmente para o setor automobilístico. Isso porque esses apresentam uma boa combinação de elevada resistência, ductilidade e tenacidade. A elevada resistência desses aços é devida a martensita e aos finos feixes de ferrita bainítica, enquanto que a tenacidade e a ductilidade são atribuídas aos filmes finos de austenita retida presentes entre os feixes. Esses filmes contém uma maior concentração de carbono em relação aos blocos de austenita retida. Uma consequência é que estes se tornam mais estáveis mecanicamente e termicamente. Dessa forma, foi realizada a avaliação do desempenho mecânico de um aço tratado isotermicamente abaixo de Mi e revenidos a 400°C/1 h. Os resultados dos ensaios de impacto mostraram que quanto maior a fração volumétrica da austenita retida maior é a energia absorvida, independente da morfologia desse constituinte.

INTRODUCTION A company must have an objective, and that usually is to earn money. In some countries an objective can also be to reduce unemployment in an area or to develop nonindustrialized areas. Government-owned companies can also have as an objective that of serving the com¬munity. This discussion is limited to the consideration of normal companies wanting to earn money. Such an objective, however, has to be defined in more detail. It is not satisfactory only to maximize the total annual profit from, for example, a mining project. In comparison with most other branches, the mining in¬dustry is very capital intensive. When starting a new project, the mining company must invest a lot of money in mines, ore treatment plants, etc. It is normally many years before any income is received from the ore. Fig. 14 illustrates the payments for a new mining proj¬ect with an expected lifetime of 10 years. Whether this project is a profitable one depends on a lot of things. If the company has a shortage of money, it can be impossible to finance the project. Even if the company has enough money, the management may think that perhaps the project may not return the money fast enough. Such limitations will not be discussed here. Suppose that the company has internal funds from its own operation or can borrow them. Since the mining company must invest the money in advance, it is not satisfactory only to add all of the costs during the mine's lifetime and compare them with the total income during the lifetime. The company must include the time value of the capital. In this appendix, the basic investment theory neces¬sary to judge the profitability and costs of mining proj¬ects will be discussed. INVESTMENT THEORY Time Value of Money If a private person has a dollar and puts it into a bank, he or she will receive interest. If the interest rate is r%, the value after one year will be $(1 + r), after 2 years $(I + r)2 , etc. The interest rate represents the time value of money. If the same person wants to have $1 in the bank af¬ter one year, he or she has to put $(1 + r)-1 in the bank today. If the person wants $1 after 2 years, it is neces¬sary to put $(1 + r)-2 into the bank today, etc. So one dollar today is worth more than one dollar tomorrow. It is, of course, not correct to compare money at differ¬ent times since each dollar has a different value. It is necessary to transform all payments to the same point in time. That is called the calculation of the capital value of a cash flow, and to do this an interest rate is used. In the same way, the cash flow from a project like that shown in Fig. 14 can be translated to any other point in time. Most common is to translate all payments to the beginning of the mining period. That capital value is often called the present capital value. Interest Rate What interest rate will the company use? A com¬pany, just like an individual, has the basic alternatives of keeping its money in the bank and receiving interest, or borrowing money from a bank and paying an interest rate. The interest rate represents the time value of money for the company. If the company has a shortage of money, or many good potential investment projects, it has to use a higher interest rate than if it has a lot of money available. Most companies also increase their interest rate as a hedge against the risk involved by using money for uncertain investments, because of taxes, etc. Capital Value When the interest rate has been decided, it is possi¬ble to estimate the capital value of a project. Here the discussion will be limited to the estimation of present capital values. Suppose that one wants to know the present capital value of $1 (Fig. 15), which will be received after n years. To transform it n years back in time, one must multiply it by the factor (1 + r)-, where r is the inter¬est rate the company uses. Table 1 gives these factors for different years and interest rates. Example: At the end of year 5 a mining company has to invest $50 million in a new mine. What is the present capital value at the end of year 0? The company uses an interest rate of 15%a.

"This paper focuses on determining the favorable geological and hydrogeological conditions for forming uranium occurrences in the Froqlos-Jabal Abou Rabah region, Palmyrides, Syria. Eighty rock samples from this area were analyzed by spectrometric gamma-ray technique to determine the radioactive concentrations of eU and eTh, and of %K. Uranium concentrations in shallow and deep groundwaters were also determined. High uranium concentrations were registered owing to the presence of phosphatic outcrops in the study region. The uranium migration trends and its remobilization were analyzed through the analysis of the behavior of eU, eTh, and their ratio. A positive relationship between eU and eU/eTh, and a negative relationship between eTh and eU/eTh in geological formations of different ages supports the secondary remobilization of uranium. The role of groundwater movement in transportation and redeposition of uranium mineralization is discussed: deep waters are less oxidizing than near-surface waters, and do not appear to have significantly remobilized uranium. This indicates that the source of secondary uranium mineralization is surficial or near surficial, and is mainly related to the leaching of outcropping phosphatic layers.Integration of the results with established radioactive and geological sections reveals four radioactive anomalous zones: north Froqlos, Kherbet Hannora, northwestern flanks of Jabal Abou Rabah (Kherbet Al-Hajar), and the northwestern limit of the Ghuntor depression. The high uranium concentration in north Froqlos is because of its original presence in the phosphate beds and extensive fracturing, which allows groundwaters to penetrate and remobilize the uranium. High uranium concentrations in the other three locations are caused by the presence of evaporites and capillary action, which draws solutions upwards and causes redeposition as surface crusts (gypcrete)."

THERE are comparatively few accurate data on the melting-or the freezing-point temperature of metallurgical slays, or on related physical phenomena, such as fluidity near the melting-point, specific heat, latent heat, etc. With the exception of the work of H. 0. Hoffman,1 and some older work by R. Akerman, P. Gredt, and H. M. Howe, no information is available that is of direct interest to the metallurgist. Hofman's valuable work is the only one that refers to slags produced in the metallurgy of copper and lead. The classic work of J. H. L. Vogt,2 who views slays from the standpoint of physical mixtures (solutions in which the entities are minerals), has opened up a. new field in the study of slags, and has placed the investigation of such properties as melting-temperatures, etc., on a rational basis. The recent work of A. L. Day, E. T. Allen, and W. P. White, of the Carnegie Institution, at Washington, and of European investigators 3 on certain systems of silicate minerals confirms the value of the investigation of silicate series from this standpoint, and it is my aim to apply this method to metallurgical slaws, in order to gain exact data of value in metallurgy. The work recorded in the present paper is the result of an investigation of reverberatory-furnace slags made for a Western smelting company to determine exactly the influence of change in composition, within comparatively narrow limits, on the melting-point. Specially designed X-ray machines are used extensively on diamond mines for the recovery of diamonds from ores. These machines are extremely expensive and, at present, there are no reliable methods of determining if the equipment is performing efficiently. The objective of this work was to manufacture translucent X-ray diamond simulants, which would emit varying but known luminescence signals when exposed to X-rays. These X-ray diamond simulants could then be used to determine the efficiency of diamond recovery operations.
