"Longwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique is one of the important methods for underground thick seam extraction in China. The coal seam in LTCC panel is divided into two parts: bottom-coal and top-coal. The bottom-coal is mined by conventional longwall method while the top-coal is mined by caving method. The top-coal caving process in LTCC and block caving process in metal mine are both gravity flow of loose ore/coal blocks. However, the presence of caving shield in LTCC makes the characteristics of drawing body shape in the two caving processes differ a lot. This paper discusses the influence of caving shields on the characteristics of drawing body shapes in light of recent studies of the top-coal drawing process. The theoretical model for describing the drawing body shape in LTCC is proposed both along the seam strike and seam inclination. Then, the experimental data are used to validate the correctness of the theoretical model. Furthermore, two examples of how the theoretical findings assist LTCC mining are given and discussed.INTRODUCTIONLongwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique and large-cutting-height mining technique have been widely used for extracting thick coal seams in China. The southern African region has a high concentration of mineral resources and supplies much of the world?s platinum demand. As a result, the international community watches South Africa to understand the impact of supply on global markets. An analysis of supply certainty and risk plays a key role in the future of growing demand in various sectors. The southern African platinum industry experienced substantial growth in the early part of the 21st century, resulting in bullish forecasts for growth during the period of 2000?2006. However, southern African platinum producers saw a significant drop in production over the following three years as a result of many dynamic factors in operations and the global economy. Between 2006 and 2009 there was a million-ounce shortfall between forecast and actual production. This was raised as a concern at the Fourth International Platinum Conference in 2010 by Stephen Forrest during his keynote address, specifically regarding the lack of understanding in the market of the causes of this shortfall and any action that was being taken to address them. This paper reviews publicly available information in the media and corporate reports and communications for the period January 2006 to December 2009. In addition, several interviews were held with key stakeholders in the industry to provide further perspective. The paper then highlights the main reasons that are reported to have affected the loss in production over the period and discusses the possible implications of the information that the mining industry does and does not disclose regarding platinum supply.

This is the fourth progress report in the series on the use of detachable rock-drill bits in the metal mines of the United States. It contains comparative statistics and costs or drilling at eight mines not reviewed in previous reports, comparison of the use of detachable bits at small mines and large mines, a discussion on the life of drill rods, and general conclusions derived from an analysis of the rock-drilling practice at all the mines investigated on this survey. This paper completes the descriptions of operating practice in rock drilling at individual mines. Data on drilling practices at 28 mines are given in appendices I and II and drilling costs are shown in appendix III. Research in the fundamentals of rock drilling, including the use of detachable bits, has been undertaken by the Bureau of Mines in its testing adit at Mount Weather, Va. Reports on the progress off this investigation will be issued when results warrant their publication.

Fundicion Refimet S.A. has operated a custom copper smelter at La Negra, near Antofagasta in northern Chile since 1993. From an initial operation based on Reverb smelting and Peirce-Smith, converting, the plant was expanded from 90 000 t/y to 160 000 t/y copper production in early 1997, by conversion to oxy-fuel smelting and use of concentrate injection on Converters. As part of this expansion a novel reverb gas cooling and cleaning system was developed and designed by Kilborn SNC-Lavalin Europe, the London, UK-based mining and metals; Office of Canada's SNC-Lavalin group. The reverb gas cooler needed to satisfy several very specific requirements including low cost, flexibility, robustness and simplicity of operation. Of particular importance was the requirement to cool and clean the ,oxy-fuel reverb gases and render them suitable for subsequent treatment in a conventional sulphuric acid plant. It was also important to avoid accretion or dust handling problems. This paper describes the key design features and subsequent successful installation, commissioning and operation of the unit.

This report on the properties of commercial motor fuels sold in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee of the Cooperative Research Council (C.R.C. ) and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior . The first report contained data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-364 . Further reports on motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to the summer of 1941 have been issued . No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942 . The present report presents analytical data for 1,120 samples , representing the products of approximately 88 companies . As in previous surveys , these companies include both large and small suppliers . In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were received . Conforming to previous surveys , the data cover three groups of samplesregular - price , premium - price , and third - grade gasolines and each group has been averaged separately. The number of samples , items and brands comprising each group, exclusive of those of the Pacific coast, are as follows : Regular price , 641 samples , 250 items , and 64 brands ; premium price , 439 samples , 222 items , and 68 brands ; third - grade gasoline , 50 samples , 50 items and 19 brands .

The identification of potential accidents on construction sites has been a major concern in the construction industry and it needs a proactive safety plan to reduce the risk of accidents. There are no efficient methods for checking if safety measures are taken properly on construction sites. Consequently, workers on site are not given enough awareness about dangerous areas. In addition, construction sites are dynamic and on-site situations are changing in terms of permanent and temporary structures and facilities. This information can be represented using Building Information Modeling (BIM). This paper proposes the integration of BIM and safety risk analysis by considering the risk levels associated with the work spaces of different construction tasks. Work spaces are generated in a BIM model according to the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) of the project, reference objects in the BIM, and the schedule and resources of the task. Each work space is assigned to one or more tasks or functions, e.g., work spaces for specific tasks, shared spaces (paths), storage spaces, or spaces prohibited to workers. The assignment of work spaces is based on the workers, equipment and materials involved in the task. All the work spaces are associated with a specific duration according to the schedule of the project. Then risk evaluation of the construction site is applied in order to evaluate safety risks based on their severity and the degree of exposure of workers. For example, work spaces for storing hazard materials and for heavy construction equipment have higher risks than other work spaces. The results of the risk evaluation can be visualized in a 4D BIM model.

The Rönnskär smelter has wide experience in the field of recycling of non-ferrous metals. Today, smelting and refining from primary and secondary raw materials are integrated in a complex flow sheet. Boliden operates a lead flash smelter, a lead refinery, a copper smelter and refinery, a sulphuric acid and sulphur dioxide plant, a slag fuming plant and precious metal plant at its Rönnskär smelter in the North of Sweden. The Business Area Smelter Operations also incorporates Boliden Bergsöe, Sweden's lead-acid battery recycler, and Norzink, Norway, where recycled zinc accounts for more than 20% of it's production. Raw materials for the Rönnskär smelter include concentrates, ashes, slags, metallic scrap, electronic scrap and electric arc furnace (EAF) steel-making dust. This paper briefly describes current operations and illustrates current measures to improve productivity. Limits to recycling as experienced by a non-ferrous smelter are, illustrated. The deportment of critical elements contained in raw materials is also discussed.

One of the several important problems that had to be solved at that time was the rapid and precise determination of uranium in ores and concentrates.GeneralThe chemical analysis of uranium ores is a long and difficult business and is complicated by the presence in most ores of a large number of interfering elements. True, much progress has been made, during the past few years, toward simplification of the analytical methods, but the chemical determination still remains the job of a skilled operator. For this reason, the chemical method has been replaced, whenever possible, by a physical determination based on the measurement of the radiations emitted by the elements of the uranium family. There are several types of instruments suitable for these measurements, but of all the radiation detectors known to the physicist, such as ionization chambers, crystal detectors, scintillation, proportional counters, and the like, the Geiger-Mueller counters have proved to be the most satisfactory for routine determinations, because of their simplicity.The Geiger-Mueller counter is a very versatile instrument; it can be constructed to detect any type of radiation, corpuscular -0r electromagnetic. Here, however, we are interested in these counters because of their ability to detect the beta and the gamma radiations, both emitted by some members of the uranium family. The beta radiation is corpuscular, and is composed of fast electrons, while the gamma radiation is electromagnetic."

A unique judicial opportunity allowed measurement of the response of three cracks in residential structure to blasting for underground aggregate mining. Instrumented cracks were located in the interior basement CMU mortar and upstairs dry wall as well as exterior brickwork. The dynamic environment was unusual. Even though the blasting occurred some 490 m (1600 ft) away, excitation frequencies were unusually high and there were no apparent surface waves. In addition there was no air overpressure wave to produce secondary crack response. As is typical, long term environmental effects produced greater crack response than did the blast induced ground motions.

South Australia pioneered metal mining in Australia and was the main source of copper for several decades. Gold discoveries and mining also contributed significantly to the development of the Colony. Across the State can be seen the holes, the mullock heaps and, in some instances, the remnants of machinery of the past era. In this, the centenary year of the discovery of the Teetulpa goldfield, considered by some to he the most significant discovery of gold in the State, it is appropriate that we should present a paper on the history of gold mining in South Australia. South Australia has not been a major producer of gold with recorded production a little in excess of 15 million grams (15 t). This represents about 0.25 per cent of the Australian total and ranks last of the States of the Commonwealth. The outstand- ing feature of gold production in South Australia has been the succession of short periods of rela- tively high production immediately following a discovery, with payable dirt being quickly exhausted, a fact clearly illustrated by the graph of South Australian gold production (Figure 1).

Anode slimes produced during copper electrorefining are a valuable source of silver, gold, selenium and tellurium. The conventional pyrometallurgical process for treating slimes involves preliminary leaching in sulphuric acid followed by smelting in a reverberatory furnace with fluxes, but it is slow and has many recycle streams. The chemistry of the phases and the reactions that occur in slimes smelting are poorly understood and and this prevents major improvements to the process. Laboratory-scale experiments were conducted using unleached slimes, with and without the addition of fluxes and under neutral, oxidising and reducing conditions. Results show that selenium is readily removed as gaseous selenium dioxide and that molten Cu-Ag-Se-O phases form when fluxes are added. Oxidation-refining of these phases by air injection and flux addition can result in the formation of silver suitable for further electrorefining

Wooden wedges, hammers and chisels, “fne setting”, to name a few, were the frst tools used to extract ore .or quarry rock for civilization. These inefficient tools and unsafe practices have been replaced today with some of the highest technology known to man. At the heart of most mining operations is the blasting program which utilizes one of the most efficient tools ever invented.. . explosives. Ever since they were invented, miners have been searching for more efficient products and methods with which to harness this “tool” and make it safer, reliable, and more eficient to use.

Gold-poor and gold-rich porphyry and epithermal gold-silver deposits of Caenozoic and Cretaceous age in the western Pacific and central and eastern Europe are confined to predominantly andesitic continental margins and island arcs. The arc volcanic rocks overlie a complex non-oceanic basement of stacked nappes, the uppermost of which is often ophiolitic. The emplacement of ophiolite triggered a reversal of tectonic polarity, subduction and arc magmatism. Andesitic volcanism and the formation of a strato-volcano were followed by the ascent of magma and porphyry copper mineralisation. Regional propylitic alteration came from convecting, predominantly meteoric fluids. Magmatic degassing caused advanced argillic alteration. This is commonly unmineralised in perched water tables, but may sometimes host high sulphidation gold or enargite gold at deeper levels within the propylitic zone. The onset of extensional stress after the andesitic volcanism allowed meteoric water to circulate to depths of 5 km or more, with consequent cooling of an ascending magma body at depth and the development of low sulphidation epithermal gold mineralisation near and immediately above the sub-volcanic basement surface. All andesitic arcs are mineralised. Regional controls on their ore potential include the level of erosion and geological features in the basement that focus the ascent of fluids. Differences between the mineralisation of the European and the western Pacific arcs may reflect the presence of older, more granitic basements in many of the European arcs.

Fortunately, few mining professionals have dealt with what all mining professionals fear---a mine disaster. Unfortunately, many have dealt with ?accidents? which may or may not claim lives but nevertheless rise to the level of a ?disaster? given the fallout of liability and litigation in today?s society.1 The undersigned authors published an article some ten years ago regarding crisis management2 based upon their collective first-hand experiences in actual disasters to that point in history. Unfortunately, disasters have occurred since that time, prompting legislation, and a fresh analysis and expansion of those basic principles is certainly in order. Without question, no two disasters are ever alike, yet general guidelines for forming an effective plan of action can be formulated?and if a mining operation is to have any chance of survival after a disaster, such a plan is vital. The primary concern as any disaster evolves remains as stated a 2003 SME article3--the protection of human life. From that point, the focus moves to any assistance that may be needed given the magnitude of the situation. Permeating throughout this process is "damage control." The first step in dealing with a disaster, however, begins long before any threat of danger arises?formulation and implementation of an Emergency Response Plan.

A test system was developed at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's ventilation test gallery for measuring airflow using a three-axis ultrasonic anemometer. The gallery war used to simulate face airflow conditions in underground mines having a blowing curtain. Airflow data, collected at multiple sampling locations between the face and the end of the curtain, were used to draw airflow profiles for different curtain setback distances, intake flow quantities and entry widths. In addition, methane was released at the face, measured at the sampling locations and displayed as methane distributions in the area between the curtain and the face. Entry geometry had a significant effect on airflow patterns, and the flow patterns affected the distribution of methane in the entry. Flow measured at and parallel to the face was a good predictor of methane dilution and removal within 0.6 m (2ft) of the face.

A study of the crystalline materials on or near the surface of freshly made or "green" superphosphate granules and mature, "set" superphosphate granules was undertaken using X-ray diffraction, X-ray mapping, scanning electron microscopy and electron probe micro analysis techniques. Calcium sulphate (CaSO4), calcium sulphate hemihydrate (CaSO4 1/2H20), and mono calcium phosphate monohydrate (Ca(H2PO4)2H2O), were the only crystalline species present in the "green" superphosphate.In the set superphosphate however, additional compounds were present, namely complex iron and aluminium phosphates Ca(Fe,AI) H(HPO4hF2)2H2O, (Fe)3(H3O)H8 (PO4)6H2O and calcium sulphate dihydrate (CaSO4.2H2O).The complex phosphates tied up the major part of the Fe and Al in the system and were concentrated on or near the surface of the granule. An intimate mixture of CaSO4.2H2O, and CaSO4, along with the above mentioned complex Fe-AI compounds, crystallize close to the surface of the granule and cause the setting of superphosphate that takes place during storage.

DURING the middle 1880s, shortly after the discovery of silver-lead ores in the Coeur d'Alene district of northern Idaho, it became apparent that concentration of the ores would be necessary to obtain a profitable product. Too much siliceous material was present for direct smelting, and the majority of the ores found at depth were too low in metallic content for economic smelting processes at the time. As the ores occurred in quartzite shear zones with siderite and quartz gangue, a large quantity of waste material was present in all the mines. As the galena was not finely disseminated, this made possible relatively good extraction of the argentiferous galena by coarse concentration. The first concentrators consisted mainly of coarse crushing, screening and jigging, principally by Harz jigs, the slimes being treated on buddies. Later Wilfley tables took the place of sand jigs and vanners superseded the buddies. Because of the marketing conditions, no attempt was made until 1900 to effect a recovery on the zinc minerals present, which were found associated in varying amounts with the galena. All through this period, the greater part of the production was obtained from mines containing ore assaying high in lead and low in zinc. Parts of some ore bodies would be reversed in this respect, so that ores high in zinc were left intact. During the decade after 1910, several important mines, The Success and The Interstate Callahan, containing ores high in zinc, were put into operation and were a material aid in the needed zinc production during World War I. Gravity concentration by jigs and tables was used during this period, with bulk flotation increasing in popularity for the treatment of the fine material that had already been treated by ordinary slime concentrating machinery. No extra fine grinding for flotation concentration was thought profitable at the time. TAILINGS DISCHARGED INTO STREAMS From the start of mining and milling operations in this district until 1904, no attempt was made by the various mills in the upper district to impound or stack their tailings. They discharged them directly into the adjacent creeks or streams, to be carried away by high water. The Bunker Hill and Sullivan and the Last Chance mines, both in the relatively flat valley of the district, stacked huge piles of the coarse jig tailings on the near-by river bottom. Rain and snowfall are heavy in the Coeur d'Alene district, as it is on the heavily timbered Pacific slope of the Bitter Root Mountains. Results of research on the hydrothermal precipitation of zirconium oxide from the Bureau of Mines' zirconyl chloride-sulfate strip liquors indicate that nuclear grade material can be prepared by this process. Greater than 99% of the zirconium value can be precipitated at 250-260°C in short (5-10 minutes) reaction time without consumption of acid value of the liquor. Thus, precipitation of zirconium dioxide on a continuous basis, i.e., the zirconium dioxide is precipitated in a continuous mode of operation by pumping the strip liquor through a heated pressurized reactor and recycle of the acidic (spent) liquor to the process stage are favored. The results of accompanying studies of liquod/solid separation, product washing and dewatering, product purity, and chlorination of the product are presented and discussed.

This paper discusses the impacts that advances in metallurgy and process engineering have on minerals project execution. Ausenco's business is focused on integrating minerals processing technology and the delivery of cost effective processing plants that exceed client performance expectations. The metallurgical development is a small but critical part of this process. Metallurgical development and innovation outcomes need to be transformed into an engineered solution and that solution converted into an operating plant in a cost conscious and competitive environment. Including new or innovative processes in a project flow sheet increases a project's technical and commercial risk. However, it also gives the project, and/or the engineering company, a potential advantage over projects using mainline practices. Managing the balance between risk and opportunity has been a cornerstone of Ausenco's success in recent years. Some advances in "technology" that are discussed in the paper include: larger capacity equipment new flow sheet concepts simplification of process interfaces, and more effective project strategies The common theme is that having a new idea can be the easy bit, putting it into operation effectively involves numerous people, many interfaces and strong project management.

The consideration of complex supply chains often highlights multiple system bottlenecks that are localised and dynamic – they shift depending on what variability last influenced the system. Using the understanding of a dynamic system model, synergies between items that tackle localised bottlenecks can be understood to generate a suite of solutions. These can be simple solutions, such as a couple of new conveyors placed in series, or more complex ones, including buffer dynamics (capacity, location, behaviour, etc).Each solution in the suite will have an associated uplift in system performance and an associated cost of implementation. Dynamic simulations can address each situation in turn and estimate the projected improvement it would offer. However, these solutions will have different benefits when implemented together, and each solution will give different uplift depending on what other solutions have already been assumed. If the number of solutions is numerous, traditional dynamic simulation analysis becomes the bottleneck, limiting options analysis to the processing power available.This paper will illustrate the use of a new technique applied as part of a capital growth optimisation project with a major iron ore producer. Metamodelling is the creation of a model of a model; in this case study, the focus is on developing a response surface representing the suite of solutions. This can be achieved through a combination of dynamic modelling and an appropriate mathematical process called design of experiments. The result is an approximation surface of the outcomes of the dynamic model, encapsulating interactions between key elements of the value chain.This modelling approach provides a number of advantages compared to traditional dynamic modelling approaches, including but not limited to:early and rapid evaluation of a large range of potential solutionsaccommodation of multiple initial states of the value chainoptimisation of the overall suite of upgrades (down to route-level upgrades) based on business objectiveseasy re-evaluation of outcomes when key inputs such as costs change.CITATION:Kleinschmidt, T, Foo, J, Reynolds, B and Kennewell, K, 2015.
