"Relating flotation performance to the electrochemical characteristics of a pulp remains a complex issue both in fundamental research and in practice. For example, in the case of thiol collectors different Eh values can result in the formation of the dimer or the metal thiolate which may or may not enhance the hydrophobicity of the mineral. Reducing or oxidizing conditions in a flotation system, viz. changing the Eh value, are usually manipulated to achieve an optimum flotation response by the control of pH and dissolved oxygen levels in the system. It is also possible to vary the potential by the addition of modifiers such as sodium hydrosulphide (NaHS), sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of the addition of the oxidising agents, NaClO and H2O2, on valuable mineral recoveries and grades in the flotation of sulphides from a PGM bearing Merensky ore. Batch flotation tests were conducted at pH 9.2, the natural pH of the system, in the absence and presence of a xanthate collector and Eh modifiers, viz. NaClO or H2O2. Most importantly in this way it was possible to vary Eh at constant pH and DO levels. The results indicate that in the absence or presence of xanthate the addition of H2O2 reduced both the recovery and grade of copper and nickel. In the absence of xanthate, the addition of NaClO improved the recovery of copper slightly and both the recovery and grade of nickel significantly, but in the presence of xanthate NaClO addition resulted in unchanged copper recovery and grade, but those of nickel were reduced. Based on anecdotal evidence that the addition of trace amounts of a potential modifier could improve flotation performance further tests were conducted the results of which suggest improved flotation performance.INTRODUCTIONIn the Merensky Reef, platinum group minerals (PGM) are commonly associated with base metal sulphides (BMS) and this has an effect on the way in which these minerals can be concentrated by flotation (Vermaak, Venter & Pistorius, 2004; Wiese, Harris & Bradshaw, 2005; Schouwstra, Kinloch & Lee., 2000). A major problem stemming from this association has been reported to be the loss of valuable minerals (PGM) associated with the loss of BMS (Wiese et al., 2005) during flotation. Shackleton (2007) suggested that PGMs behave in a similar manner to sulphides during flotation. Therefore, in order to recover the PGM, base metals are targeted. There is thus a need to investigate ways to improve the flotation performance of the sulphide minerals. The electrochemistry of the flotation of sulphide minerals has been studied for over half a century and there is consensus that sulphide minerals float only under a suitable redox environment (Heyes & Trahar 1979). This implies that reducing and oxidizing conditions during flotation of ores such as Merensky can be manipulated/varied to achieve an optimum flotation response.During flotation, sulphide minerals interact with thiol collectors in an electrochemical reaction to form hydrophobic species at the mineral surface (Finkelstein & Goold 1972; Rand & Woods 1984). The sulphide minerals are semiconductors and their interaction with collectors involves transfer of electrons. As such, a potential difference results which is responsible for driving electrons between reacting species (Fuerstenau, Jameson & Yoon, 2007). The magnitude of the potential difference affects the relative energies of charge carriers (electrons) at the mineral/solution interface hence controlling the direction and rate of charge transfer or rate of reaction (Bard & Faulkner, 2001). In a mixed mineral system the mineral/solution interface potentials account for the mixed potential which is critical to the process of flotation (Chander, 2003; Woods, 2003)."

The use of service variables in geostatistics (grade-thickness) is common in industry when developing block grade models and geologic resource estimates. This is particularly true in the case of sedimentary and strata-bound-type deposits. The approach has proven merits when assessing ore reserves. However, there are cases where its application for preliminary data analysis produces biased estimates. One such case is encountered in uranium disequilibrium studies. This paper demonstrates the inadequacy of service variables when performing uranium disequilibrium studies. Disequilibrium analysis is a necessary pre-processing step when radiation counts are used as raw data to calculate uranium reserves. Typically, a probe is used to obtain the gamma counts from open drill holes. These counts are then regressed (and corrected) against chemical assays obtained from core samples. During this process, the grade-thickness variable produces an optimistic image of the relationship between probe grades and chemical (true) grades, causing overestimation of the final geologic resource. The problem is analyzed through a case study.

"INTRODUCTION The Connellsville mine of the Yolande Coal & Coke Co. is in the southwestern part of Jefferson County, Ala., about 30 miles southwest of Birmingham. The mine is on the Blue Creek bed, which is about 6 feet thick and dips at a angle of 18º. The bed is worked by the room-and-pillar method and is mined by both machine and hand methods. The Blue Creek bed at this point yields a high ash, low-volatile coal with excellent coking properties. Because of its exceptionally low volatile content and high coking strength, this coal is excellent for blending with Alabama coals of higher volatile content and weaker coking properties to form blends suitable for production of metallurgical coke.A sample of washed coal taken during this investigation gave the following analysis on an as received"" basis: Moisture, 8.3 per cent; volatile matter-, 20.2 per cent; ash, 8.0 per cent; fixed carbon, 63.5 per cent. The high ash content of this coal limits the quantity which can be utilized when low-ash coke is required. In the Birmingham district it is usually difficult to sell as coking coal a product that contains more than 8.0 per cent ash. To produce a. coal with this ash content at Connellsville presents a somewhat difficult washing problem. This paper gives the results of an investigation that was conducted by the Southern Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the Yolane Coal & Coke Co. for the purpose of determining the washing characteristics of the coal and the possibility of reducing its ash content on coal-washing tables.The practice at the Connellsville washery at the time of beginning this investigation was to crush the run-of-mine coal to pass a 1 1/2-inch round-hole screen and to treat the satire output on two primary, 3-compartment jigs. A. middling product was recovered from the primary jigs which was re-treated on a single-compartment rougher jig. This system yields a product of acceptable ash content, but the yield is low and the loss of good coal in the refuse is high."

I. INTRODUCTION. DURING the past 50 years the attention of mining-men has been turned to Africa, and within the past decade prospecting-expeditions sent into Central Africa have resulted in the opening-up of several mines. Having recently spent two years in the Belgian Congo for the Société Internationale Forestiere et Miniere du Congo, it is our purpose to outline briefly the mining-conditions in that part of Central Africa. Before it became, in 1908, a Belgian colony, this region was known as the Congo Free State. II. LOCATION AND AREA. The Belgian Congo lies in southwestern Central Africa, west of the continental divide, is illustrated in Fig. 1. It has a coastline of but 20 miles on the Atlantic, but widens rapidly eastward to points 5° north and 14° south of the equator. Its area is 908,000 sq. miles, which is almost one-quarter that of the United States and Alaska, or more than one and one-half times that of Alaska. Stated in other terms, its area is nearly one-third that of the United States, exclusive of Alaska and the insular possessions, or more than that of all the United States east of the Mississippi river. The present study 'of pure ZnS and NiS and ZnS (marmatite) by detailed electrokinetic methods has shown that by careful control of experimental parameters much new' information on sulphide-water interfaces can be obtained. Time-dependent processes of alteration of sulphide surfaces are foHowed by electrokinetic methods and indicate that the isoelectric point of the surface depends on elemental sulphur coverage, oxidation product coverage, and the conditions which promote or minimize such reaotions in the presence and absence of activator.

Although bismuth mineralization is spread widely through the Lachlan Fold Belt in New South Wales, broad grouping of the various deposits can be effected on the basis of geographical and geological (age and type of associated rocks) affinities. As a result, significant concentrations of bismuth can be recognized in the Mid-Western granites, Cobar-type ore, the Yass Silurian acid volcanic belt, and the Albury, Bega, Braidwoodand Bathurst districts.In these deposits bismuth generally occurs in minor amounts associated with molybdenite, wolframite, scheelite, cassiterite, chalcopyrite, galena, magnetite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, and native gold. From this group of minerals three broadly defined associations can be recognized.I. Bi-Sn-W-Mo2. Bi-Au( -Te)3. Bi-Pb-Cu(-Au)There may be some interchangeability of these metals, as instanced by occasional Bi-Cu-W-Mo mirleralization, but pyrite and/ or arsenopyrite are usually prominent in all associations.The first two of these associations occur mainly in the form of narrow quartz veins rarely averaging more than O· 3 per cent Bi, although there is often a marked enrichment in ferruginous material in the oxidized zone.Most of these veins occur within or adjacent to granitic rocks of varying ages (principally Silurian or Devonian), although Bi-Au mineralization tends to be related to more basic igneous activity than the Bi-Sn-W-Mo association.The latter is also occasionally developed in pipes, usually coarse-grained and richer in bismuth (as at Whipstick, the principal mine in New South Wales with a production of 343 tonnes of the metal), or in lower grade, but probably larger tonnage skarn deposits. The bismuth-base metal association occurs mainly in Silurian acid volcanic sequences and may also form low grade but large tonnage deposits, such as is possibly developed at Cobar.

"A 2 km section of the Evergreen Line Rapid Transit Project is supported on improved ground consisting of cement deep soil mix (CDSM) panels because of highly variable and challenging soil conditions, especially the potential for seismic liquefaction-induced lateral spreading. CDSM was used as an alternative approach in place of driven piles for reducing the seismic lateral spreading displacements. An additional significant aspect of obtaining owner acceptance for CDSM was demonstrating that both seismic and non-seismic performance would equal or exceed that of using driven piles. It was recognized that, to demonstrate adherence to the seismic performance requirements, seismic design should be based on dynamic analyses (using FLAC) to estimate likely displacements and stresses/strains in the CDSM panels. One focus of the analyses was investigating the potential for cracking of the CDSM panels and the resulting displacements. This was simulated using the Ubiquitous-Joint and UBCSAND constitutive models.INTRODUCTIONThe Evergreen Line Rapid Transit Project (ELRT) is an 11 km extension of the SkyTrain system through Burnaby, Coquitlam and Port Moody in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, Canada (Figure 1). The ELRT project is being delivered through a Design/Build/Finance model by Evergreen Rapid Transit Construction (EGRT), an SNC-Lavalin Inc. company, to the Province of British Columbia (the Province).This paper discusses the ground improvement design for a 2 km section of the alignment through Port Moody, a historic city at the head of Burrard Inlet. The alignment is located in a right-of-way of restricted width with many pinch points close to residential and commercial properties, and directly adjacent to the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) mainline tracks. The ground slopes from south to north across the alignment towards Burrard Inlet at inclinations of up to about 6%. Design and construction of the Port Moody section was subcontracted to SNC-Lavalin Constructors (Western) Inc. (SLCW) and SNCLavalin/ Graham Construction Joint Venture (SGJV). Construction included single- and double-track slab guideways, pocket track (where up to four to six tracks were present), and Moody Centre Station."

Hydrogen sulphide associated with the gasps and vapors from certain crude oils now produced in the United States has forced a serious health and safety problem upon the petroleum industry. Although the presence of hydrogen sulphide in or occurring with Mexican crudes has been known for some time, it was not until recently that crude oils which give off poisonous amounts of hydrogen sulphide have been produced to any extent in the United State. The injurious effects of this poisonous gas were first recognized by the refiners along; the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts upon receiving shipments of crude petroleum from Mexico. The problem of combating the hazards of the gases and vapors given off by this petroleum become more important as the use of Mexican crude increased. In 1925, the Bureau of Mines and Public Health Service under cooperative agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, studied the causes rend effects of hydrogen sulphide poisoning. Bureau of Mines Bulletin 2312 is report of this investigation, and although written with special reference to refineries, it nevertheless contains much information that is of value to the producer of petroleum.

High temperature pressure oxidation (>190°C) is a wellrecognized and versatile metallurgical oxidative pre-treatment process commonly used to liberate gold from refractory sulfide ores and concentrates. The pressure oxidation of refractory gold ores was first commercially applied in 1985, at Homestake Mining Company’s McLaughlin mine in the United States. Since that time numerous refractory gold and other high temperature pressure oxidation facilities have been built throughout the world. The design of each facility was met with unique challenges and opportunities which have led to an array of plant configurations, pressure oxidation autoclave sizes, and sulfide oxidation capacities. This paper presents a historical review of high temperature pressure oxidation operations and current projects in execution with a focus on the autoclave vessel design, circuit configuration, and unit sulfide oxidation capacity as a basis for characterization and comparison.

Transportation of fluid and slurry (fluid and solid particle mixtures) in a pipe and annulus space has been the focus of numerous studies. There are different parameters to be considered when studying slurry transportation. These include slurry velocity or flow rates; fluid properties such as density and rheology; and solid particle properties including concentration, density, shape and size. Also the angle of the flow conduit, rotation of the pipe and possible eccentricity of the annulus are other factors which influence slurry transport characteristics. Although a number of analytical, numerical and empirical equations as well as numerical simulations have been developed for studying the flow and slurry transport characteristics, the results need to be validated against either field or lab data. As performing field tests is costly and time consuming, conducting simulations at the laboratory scale appears as a good alternative. Different flow loops have been designed to study slurry transport behaviour in different science and engineering disciplines including oil and gas and mining. However, few of these consider, in particular, cuttings transportation in small size annulus space. The flow characteristics appear to be very different when slurry travels within a small size annulus, in particular when the fluid velocity is high. In this study, a review of some of the existing slurry flow loops will be conducted. Then the details of a slurry loop, which has been designed and commissioned for the purpose of studying cuttings transport in a small size annulus space for applications in drilling mineral exploration wells using coil tube technology, will be presented.

Production scheduling is one of the most important factors affecting mine planning. A program -Mine Scheduler -that aids mining engineers with the setup of an optimum open pit production scheduling algorithm has been developed. A mathematical model for open pit scheduling that optimizes the Net Present Value of the cash flows was formulated. A simulated data is formulated as a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) problem. What's Best by Lindo Systems is used as the MILP solver in Microsoft Excel. The implementation of the algorithm focuses on problem setup, allowing users to easily evaluate, simplify, and develop the model that best fits their production scheduling.

This paper discusses the challenges faced by the design team of the under-river crossings of electric transmission feeders in New York City, a densely populated urban area. The under-river crossing of a 345 kV feeder was initially designed as Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), but was redesigned as a utility tunnel because of site con¬straints on both sides of the river. Multiple studies addressed location, available tech-nologies and costs. Multiple soil investigation phases addressed design aspects of HDD, as well as tunneling. Contractual issues varied from a design build alternative with Geotechnical Data Report (GDR) to design tender approach with GDR & Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR).

Introduction Inco is the major North American nickel producer. Initially based in Sudbury, Ontario, its past exploration activity was directed toward finding new nickel deposits. New nickel sulfide discoveries outside Sudbury have included Thompson, Manitoba; Shebandowan, Ontario; and Widgiemooltha in Western Australia as well as a host of nickel laterite deposits. The company is currently diversifying into other commodities, including gold. Inco's exploration department participated in uranium discoveries in Saskatchewan and chromite discoveries at Tiebaghi in New Caledonia. In addition, it found new gold deposits at Lupin, Northwest Territories; Crixas, Brazil; Hoyle Township, Ontario; and Casa Berardi in Quebec. Crixas and Casa Berardi are currently being evaluated by underground exploration. Figure 1 shows some Canadian Shield gold locations where Inco is or was an active participant. Base metal developments Base metal exploration in shield areas has been greatly eased by applying scientific studies. Archean nickel sulfide deposits have been found using komatiitic-flow models (Fardon, 1971). Volcanogenic massive sulfide model has been applied to copper-zinc deposits (Sangster and Scott, 1976). Such deposits were subsequently seen developing on the sea floor through black smokers (Spiess, MacDonald, and Atwater, 1980). Sedimentary processes were recognized early as important in ore formation, particularly in the southern hemisphere (King, 1976). And many ore deposits are now regarded as a simple part of the geological column (Stanton, 1960 and 1972). Petrographic work on alteration patterns in and around ore bodies was used to develop standard porphyry copper models (Lowell and Guilbert, 1970). Epithermal models for precious metals followed. Stratigraphic zonation patterns have been formulated for base metal deposits, including keel facies, ore facies, and cap or distal facies. Gold developments The work on base metal deposits naturally spilled over into precious metal exploration when the gold price was allowed to float on world money markets. Early work on elements associated with gold deposits, especially arsenic, tellurium, selenium, and mercury, pioneered more detailed geochemical work (Bagby and Berger, 1985; and Groves, Ho, and Houstoun, 1984). Geochemical patterns have been recognized around microfine gold deposits. And the study of gold precipitation patterns in modern geothermal systems has helped understand gold deposition. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, it was noticed that numerous Archean banded iron formations contained anomalous gold values. From this and other observations, the syngenetic exhalite gold model has developed. Gold deposits also occur along shears in some plutons such as the Belmoral mine in Quebec. This indicates the importance of epigenetic processes in ore formation. Shield ore settings Initial studies recognized that the major gold camps in the Canadian Shield were mostly in greenstone belts and found along "breaks," especially zones of faulting and sedimentation. Gill (1948) wrote, "Only recently, as a result of detailed mapping, has the importance of major schist zones such as the Larder Lake, Cadillac, Porcupine Creek, and Destor Breaks been recognized. These zones of persistent adjustment mark broad belts favorable for ore occurrence." The importance of shearing in ore location and regional greenstone stratigraphic position close to late sedimentary packages was clearly understood. And structural models have been further developed for some Canadian ore deposits (Hubert, Trudel, and Gelinas, 1984). In the Beardmore-Geraldton camp of northwest Ontario, the importance was soon recognized of fold noses in banded iron formation, as localizers for gold ore. The 2-mile Beach Interceptor Sewer Tunnel was constructed in 1954 to then-current mining and construction standards. Due to its lifespan and deteriorating condition it is now being stabilized and rehabilitated using conventional excavation and ground support. At its southern end, below the prestigious Three Arch Bay community, the original tunnel alignment passes under a historic landslide where the tunnel was sand-backfilled and capped by bulkheads in 1957 due to severe and caving ground conditions. Video footage of the existing 21- inch clay pipe showed that the pipe is severely damaged, which could potentially cause a catastrophic pipeline failure and sewage spill into the Pacific Ocean. This paper summarizes the thorough investigation and design process, tunnel realignment construction and monitoring, and the notable cooperation between all parties to overcome the project risks.

The high-grade Th-U-Y zone is one of the numerous mineralized zones found in the El Garra El Hamra hydrothermally altered syenites in southwestern Egypt. It is characterized by the thorium minerals thorite and thorogummite, which are closely associated with xenotime-(Y). This zone of mineralization is localized in the eastern part of the El Garra El Hamra hydrothermally altered syenites. This zone does not relate to the first phase of syenites that appeared on the surface but is linked to the other, hidden phase of the syenitic body. Additionally, the fluids responsible for the mineralization of this zone belong to the late-stage hydrothermal event as well as the fault action due to the fact that it had continued reactivations for a long period of time. The studied mineralized zone also contains ceriopyrochlore-(Ce),(Ce,Ca,)2 (Nb,Ta)2O6 (OH), fluorite (CaF2) and barite (BaSO4), which are found in considerable amounts, whereas apatite (Ca5(PO4)3F) and chromite (FeCr2O4) are rarely found together with Fe-oxi-hydroxides (hematite and goethite) with a minor amount of jarosite (KFe33+(OH)6(SO4)2). Finally, the main constituent mineral in the zone is the pseudomorph perthite in addition to quartz, which is found as deformed crystals. A technological sample was collected from this zone and was found to assay 4.62 weight percent thorium (Th), 0.37 weight percent uranium (U) and 3.12 weight percent rare earth elements (REEs). From the chemical and mineralogical composition of the studied technological sample, the leachabilities of Th, U and REEs were investigated using sulfuric acid (H2SO4) agitation leaching and pug leaching methods. The latter was found to be preferred under the conditions of 0.54 ton H2SO4 per ton of altered syenite at 110 °C for two hours.

There have been major changes in the makeup and nature of the uranium exploration industry in recent years. Significant price increases precipitated an increase in exploration activity-according to the Department of Energy, exploratory drilling in 1977, by 140 companies, was almost 8 million m (26 million ft). This represents a 37% increase over the prior year's drilling. Projections for 1978 indicate at least 9 million m (30 million ft) of exploratory holes will be drilled in the US. Exploration expenditures in 1979, including land acquisition, drilling, and other costs, were estimated by DOE at over $236 million. Domestic expenditures for 1978 are estimated at over $250 million.

This is the third report of investigations dealing with the application of electrolytic manganese to steel-foundry practice and the seventh in a series of reports dealing with tests to establish the technological acceptability of electrolytic manganese in the iron and steel industries. The work was carried out by Metallurgical Division of the Bureau of Mines as part of an extensive program for the development and utilization of domestic ores. The electrolytic manganese used in the tests was produced by the Bureau at its Boulder, City, Nev., pilot plant by the process developed by the Bureau of Mines.

Recently discovered Carboniferous bentonites are variable in charadeI and thickness, but being altered aeolian, ash-fall tuffs, they are probably extensive. Most are the Ca-montmorillonite type without the natural swelling characteristics of the Wyoming deposits, but their situation, thickness, and response to beneficiation through cation exchange may give them some potential as sources of future economic deposits.INTRODUCTIONLoughnan and See (1959) gave an account of bentonites and fuller's earth deposits of New South Wales. The most likely potential industrial sources were those occurring in the uppermost formations of the Newcastle and Singleton Coal Measures (Permian) in the Hunter Valley and deposited during epochs not marked by strong contemporary vulcanicity.One feature of the record of known occurrences at that time was the absence of bentonites from the thick volcanic sequences of the Carboniferous, but since this paper appeared, many bentonite beds have been discovered by the writer in the Carboniferous facies formerly known as the "Kuttung Series".The purpose of this contribution is to report briefly on the occurrence, genesis, mineralogy, and economic potential of these deposits which augment possible sources of bentonite near major industrial centres on the eastern seaboard.The potential world demand for bentonite would increase markedly with the trend to pelletization in the steel industry, if its use in this field became more general.
