In considering the preparation of any paper concerning bearing metals, one feels a certain amount of diffidence in venturing into a field which has been capably explored at great length and in great detail during recent years. Many excellent articles have appeared in technical literature, dealing with the general theory of bearings and of bearing metals, the properties of white metals of the tin-base and lead-base types, and of the recently developed lead-bronzes.The justification for this further excursion into the field lies in the fact that it treats a branch of the bearing metal family which has so far received very little attention, and that of a somewhat sketchy nature, in published papers.The author's object is to give some outline of the history, development, present status and possibilities of the cadmium-base bearing metal alloys, particularly those in which copper is the main alloying element.GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS.It is desirable that attention should first of all be given to the general theory, constitution, and necessary attributes of bearing metals, in order that some of the problems met with during the development work may be better appreciated.Despite some evidence to the contrary, it is fairly generally maintained that an alloy for bearing metal use should be of a heterogeneous nature. It should consist of particles of a hard constituent uniformly distributed through a softer matrix.The basic idea is that the hard constituent should actually bear the load and resist wear, while the matrix imparts the necessary ductility and allows the bearing to align itself on the shaft in service.

"Traditionally Continuous Fiber Aluminum Matrix Composites have been fabricated using high strength fibers and high strength matrices, often commercial alloys, with the goal of producing high strength composites. However the specific role of the choice of matrix alloy on composite properties has not been well established. One way to control composite tensile strength is to use coatings to introduce a low strength interface between fiber and matrix which tends to reduce the importance of the matrix selection, but unfortunately renders the transverse strength unacceptably low. Thus using a system with strong bonding between fiber and matrix is desirable, such as an alumina fiber / aluminum alloy matrix system. In this case the transverse strength is a strong function of the matrix strength. However the longitudinal strength then depends largely on the characteristics of the matrix. The important role of the matrix is discussed using examples of alumina fibers in various aluminum alloy matrices. The key attributes are matrix constituent phases, alloy chemistry, alloy reactivity with the fiber, and matrix strength. From the understanding developed in these systems a set of design rules may be established for selecting an optimum matrix. IntroductionAluminum matrix composites (AMC's) reinforced with continuous fibers offer very attractive property gains over AI alloys, such as strength, stiffness, and fatigue resistance. These gains are magnified when specific mechanical properties are compared which make them attractive candidates for replacing steel, nickel, titanium and aluminum alloy parts in weight critical applications (1). Many systems have been tried in the past; B/AI, C/AI, SiC/AI, Si-Ti-C-O/AI and AI203/AI. Technically B/AI was a very good system but was expensive in regard to both fiber cost and fabrication and SiC/AI and C/AI systems are still plagued with reactivity problems. The Si-Ti-C-O/AI appears to be a good strength system but with lower stiffness. Until recently, the AI203/AI was a low strength system, in part due to a lack of a high strength fiber. Recently 3M introduced a high strength AI203 fiber - Nextel™ 610, which leads to high strength composites (1,2) and may also be both low cost and also compatible with less expensive casting approaches for fabrication."

The Golden Cross project was a joint venture between Coeur NZ Ltd (80 per cent) and Viking Mining Company (20 per cent). The site is located in the Waitekauri Valley, 8 km north-west of Waihi, on the Coromandel Peninsula, in the North Island. The mine-site is situated close to the Coromandel Range Divide between the headwaters of the Waitekauri River and the Martoto Stream. The site has a history of Gold Mining dating back to 1892. The more recent mine comprised an open pit and underground gold and silver operation from December 1991 to April 1998, MacGillivray, Maton and Goldstone (2000).Doug Hood Ltd commenced the first of three contracts on site in September 1997 and was responsible for completing the final stages of open pit mining, landslide remedial works mine closure and rehabilitation works. The Mill Closure and Rehabilitation and Drainage Works contract, for which this submission relates, commenced in September 1999 and was officially completed by Doug Hood Ltd. on the 26 May 2001.This paper endeavours to highlight the project objectives and backgrounds them against the difficulties experienced with respect to the site-specific conditions, the design complexities and risks associated with the contract, from a contractorÆs perspective.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Stillwater Mining Company worked cooperatively with the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology to develop a system that would collect seismic data at the Stillwater and East Boulder mines. The purpose was to obtain baseline information on the magnitude and location of mining-induced seismicity to determine if the mines needed multi-channel in-mine monitoring systems. Seismic data recorded at field sites near the mines are being telemetered via FM radio through a series of repeaters to a central recording site where the seismic signals are digitized using an Earthworm data acquisition system. The Earthworm system performs several data analysis tasks in near-real time and places raw seismic data, preliminary hypocenter locations, and magnitudes on a Website within 5 min of a seismic event. Such rapid access to seismic data allows personnel at the Stillwater Mine, Spokane Research Laboratory, and Earthquake Studies Office to evaluate seismic events quickly and respond in ways that may improve the safety of mine personnel underground. Installation of the system also broadened earthquake coverage to south-central Montana, a region previously not covered by the seismograph network.

The photoluminescence of Pr, Nd, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb in CdS, and Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb in ZnSe has been observed from crystals Prepared by diffusion using rare earth metals and an excess chalcogen pressure. For a given temperature, time, and chalcogen pressure the spectral characteristics were very reproducible from run to run, and the emission intensity for Nd, Er, and Yb in CdS was as high or higher than the best vapor phase doped crystals we have grown. For a few rare earths it was found that certain conditions of diffusion tend to yield optimum rare earth emission intensity with respect to the background lattice emission. Photoluminescence measwements of Yb in CdS as a function of depth gave a profile which was neither a Gaussian nor complementary error function. Part of the profile appears to arise from a fast component of the diffusion and the other part from a slow diffusing component. At 960°C and 33 atm S pressure, a com -plimentary error function approximation of the slow diffusing component gave a diffusion coefficient of D = 1.3 x 10-9 sq cm per sec. MOST of the studies of emission from rare earth ions in II-VI compounds have been reported on crystals doped during growth,1,2 although Kingsley and Aven prepared ZnSe:Er by diffusion for paramagnetic resonance and fluorescence studies. Pappalardo and Dietz prepared CdS:Yb by diffusion, but they made optical absorption measurements., We know of no study on the properties of rare earth diffusion in the II-VI compounds. To date we have diffused Pr, Nd, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb into CdS, and Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb into ZnSe and observed the rare earth emission spectra. For a given temperature and chalcogen pressure, the emission characteristics are very reproducible from run to run and for Yb, Nd, and Er in CdS, as good as the best crystals we had prepared by doping during vapor phase growth.2 The emission of Pr, Ho, and Tm has been observed in CdS prepared by diffusion for the first time. Previous attempts2 to prepare these later three materials by vapor phase growth were unsuccessful. The problem of obtaining reproducible characteristics in II-VI semiconductor compound work is well known.5 Not only is it difficult to reproduce results from one laboratory to another but it is sometimes difficult to reproduce results from one growth run to another under ostensibly identical conditions within one laboratory. This situation has been particularly bothersome in research on the luminescence of rare earth activated ZnS1 and Cds2. Crystals from one vapor phase growth run would show very strong rare earth line emission while crystals from a nearly identical run would show no rare earth emission. It was also observed on occasion that the intensity of the rare earth emission was not constant over the entire volume of a single crystal. MATERIAL PREPARATION AND INSTRUMENTATION Vapor phase grown boules of CdS were supplied by Dow Corning. This material was characterized by a free electron concentration of n - 3.5 x 1015 cm-3 and Hall mobility of 350 sq cm per v sec at room temperature. There were microscopic voids and decorated precipitates in some samples. The precipitates annealed out at diffusion temperatures but the voids remained. Single crystal rectangular samples of mm dimensions were sawed from the boules. The ZnSe was polycrystalline, UHP grade from Eagle-Picher. Poly-crystalline samples were sawed from the ingots. The samples were lapped, polished on one side, etched in a solution of 0.5 M K2Cr2O7 in 16 N H2SO4, and thoroughly washed in distilled water. A sample, excess sulfur (or selenium), and 5 mg of rare earth metal (turnings) were sealed in a 3.6 cm3 quartz ampoule at about 2 X 10-5 torr. The high chalcogen pressure used (1 to 30 atm) prevented thermal etching of the crystals and affected the diffusivity and solubility of the rare earth ions in the crystal lattice. For meaningful or reproducible results, it is thus necessary to specify the vapor pressure at which the diffusion was carried out. It is assumed that a negligible amount of the chalcogen was used in the formation of rare earth sulfides or selenides Our sulfur vapor pressure calculations are based on data assuming S2, S6, and S, molecules only in which case the equilibrium constants are given by6 where the pressures are expressed in torr. Selenium vapor consists of a mixture of Se2, Se4, Se6, and Se6 molecules. The selenium vapor pressure was calculated using equilibrium constants given by The status of the rare earth source during diffusion is unknown, i.e., the partial pressures of the rare earth metal and of the rare earth chalcogenides has not been determined. All emission spectra were recorded at 77°K on a Perkin-Elmer model 98-G spectrometer using a 640 line per mm grating. No correction was made for the spectrometer and detector spectral sensitivity. The thermodynamic properties for the CaO-CaF2and CaO-BaO systems were calculated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation using Born-Mayer-Huggins type pair potential. The parameters of interatomic potential were obtained by fitting the thermodynamics properties of CaO, CaF2and BaO with the experimental data. The phase diagrams for the CaO-CaF2 and CaO-BaO systems were calculated by the thermodynamic properties obtained by MD simulation. The eutectic composition and temperature of the CaO-CaF2system calculated by MD simulation were about 28 mole per cent CaO and 1575K, respectively. The calculated eutectic point agrees very well with experimental data, which are about 22 mole per cent CaO and 1633K, respectively. Two great revolutions in mining occurred during the 20th century. The first took place almost 100 years ago (1903-1905) with Daniel Jackling’s experiment in the economies of scale for large-scale mining at Bingham Canyon. Jackling’s ideas changed the focus of base metal exploration toward lower-grade, high-tonnage deposits. The second revolution was the impact of environmental and social concerns on mining. It started near the end of the 20th century and is still under way. This article speculates on the effects of this second revolution on the future of mineral exploration.

A number autonomous operations is in place in several, mainly in fenced areas, where safety is assured by locking off the entire area for other traffic. However autonomy can be brought much further if functional safety is assured and a real mixed traffic of autonomous and manually operated vehicles is possible. MobileTronics has created a modular software and control framework for autonomous machines. The paper covers application examples in which the deterministic object recognition in combination with probabilistic algorithms and sensors is used as a basis for functional safe certification of mixed traffic autonomy.

A new process has been developed for leaching zinc sulphide concentrates at atmospheric pressure using air or oxygen plus nitrogen dioxide in dissolved or gaseous form as? an oxygen carrier. The process is flexible and can cope with variations in the degrees of retention and regeneration of dissolved nitrogen dioxide in the leaching phase. By controlled addition of concentrate a leach solution with low residual nitrate concentration can be produced. Following separation by filtration of unleached solids and elementa1 sulphur and conventional oxidation/precipitation of dissolved iron, the leach liquor can be treated with metallic zinc to remove the remaining nitrate and other meta111c impurities such as copper, cadmium and cobalt to provide a solution suitable for electrolytic recovery of zinc. Pilot scale testing of the process .has given zinc recoveries in the high nlnet1es, production of a hi.gh grade jarosite-free Pb/Ag residue (50% Pb.) and a saleable high grade of elemental sulphur. .A wide range of concentrates can be treated containing substantial levels of lead and copper as well as zinc. Indicative cost estimates suggest that the new process is competitive with alternative procedures such as pressure leaching.

Large differences between macro and micro grindability relationships have been discovered for mill design measurements using the patented SAGDesign(TM) test. Crushing, Rod and Ball Mill Wi tests, and breakage parameter measurements have previously been used to design SAG mills but have not revealed the true magnitude of these differences. A SAGDesign(TM) test measures the SAG/Bond Wi Ratio (defined below) for every sample tested and gives a good design result because the F80 of the SAG stage test feed is 19 mm and because the test includes a Bond Ball Mill Work Index on SAG ground ore. Good flotation operation demands properly sized grinding mills and steady feed to the flotation circuit.

This paper is the second report of the results of the United States Bureau of Mines twenty-third semiannual survey of motor fuel marketed in the United States. The first paper, reporting data relating to gravity, vapor pressure, and distillation range of the samples, was published as Report of Investigations 31293. A third and concluding paper giving the results of other tests will be published as soon as these tests have been completed. The present paper deals with the data of the twenty-third semiannual survey presented in accordance with the revised specifications for United States Government motor gasoline. The sample numbers used are identical with those used in Report of Investigations 3129, with additional data included for copper strip corrosion (method 530.22),4 and sulphur content by the lamp method. Three hundred and twelve samples were collected and analyzed in this survey. Two hundred and seven samples were competitive-price gasolines and one hundred and five samples were premium-price motor fuels.

In recent years, domestic coal mining companies have become more attentive to the contribution safety and loss control programs have on their financial results. Although most have adopted fairly conventional safety programs, some have created systems and processes tailored to their unique circumstances. While each coal mining business must consider the typical risks inherent to our industry, excellence in safety is most likely achieved when a safety program is customized to meet the needs of the individual business.

The Bagdad district is 67 kilometers west of Prescott, Arizona, (Figure 1). The area north of the Old Dick and Bruce Mines was originally mapped by Anderson, Scholz and Strobell between 1943 and 1945, (1). The region is perhaps better known for the Bagdad porphyry copper deposit of tertiary age. However, 2 to 5 kilometers south of this deposit are several small massive sulfide occurrences in a eugeosynclinal Precambrian greenschist environment. More specifically, in. the Bridle formation of the Yavapai schist series. Three of these mines - Old Dick, Bruce and Copper Queen - were mined by Cyprus Mines Corporation between 1957 and 1977, and produced nearly 2mm tons of 3.6% copper and 12% zinc. These deposits occur at the interface between andesite and rhyolite and are stratiform in character. Certain structural and textural properties of the Bruce orebody suggest that remobilization of the massive sulfides occurred at some period during the metamorphic history of the area.

The H sections can be as much as a meter deep; they can be used as continuous interlocked wall. A steel saving alternate is spacing the H and driving deep for stability then filling between with shorter interlocking sheet piles. Templates provide for exact positioning.

Your Excellency, on behalf of the Council of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and, indeed, on behalf of everyone present, I extend to you a welcome, and our thanks for your gracious acceptance of the invitation to be here to-day and, later on, to present Honorary Membership Certificates. I also welcome the several official representatives of our Allies, of Great Britain and our sister Dominions.To Messrs. E. C. Driffield and E. J. Rigby, two of the original Foundation Members, who are with us to-day, I extend greetings.The present occasion is opportune to express, on behalf of a representative body of professional men, deep appreciation of the sacrifice which His Majesty the King has made, and will continue to make, by appointing His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester as Governor General of Australia and, therefore, His Majesty's senior personal representative in this country.I suppose, that as the primary reason for our assembly to-day is to celebrate the Fiftieth Year of the Institute's existence, I should properly on this occasion, give an account of its history and development. However, as this subject was ably covered by Mr. L. V. Waterhouse, in his Presidential Address in 1938, I trust I may be excused for selecting some other subject. I shall, therefore, exercise my privilege as President and give you a short history of the Mining and Metallurgical Industry of this country with special reference to its effect on the development of the Commonwealth and on the national economy. I apologize in advance for any statistics which I inflict upon you; some of these will be three or four years out of date, because of censorship restrictions. I shall as far as possible refer firstly to the industry prior to and including 1893, the Institute's foundation year, and then to subsequent development.Australia, is pre-eminently a pastoral and agricultural country and it leads the world in the production of wool. Nevertheless, it has an international reputation as a producer of gold and various metals and of minetal products.The development of gold mining in the decade 1840-50 was an epoch-making event in Australia's history, because, to quote one writer's apt phrase, "it precipitated Australia into nationhood." It was certainly responsible for a rapid increase in population. Thus, during the period 1841-1861 the population of Australia increased fourfold, from 221,000 to 1,170,000.The effect of the discovery of gold in Western Australia was even more striking. The Red Dog Mine is the world’s largest zinc mine. It is located 145 km (90 miles) north of the Arctic Circle in northwest Alaska on lands owned by the Inupiat Eskimo organization called the Northwest Alaskan Native Association (NANA) Development Corp. NANA acquired surface and subsurface title to this resource as part of its settlement lands under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. In 1982, NANA entered into a lease agreement with Cominco. Cominco is an international mining company focused on zinc. It built and operates the Red Dog Mine. NANA’s principle objective in the development of the mine was to have it contribute to the development of sustainable communities within their traditional region. This meant creating job opportunities in a modern economy while preserving the traditional subsistence lifestyles. Preservation of their culture, language and traditions are as important to the NANA people today as they were in the past.

In 1937, the Metallurgical Department of the National Resources Committee established a copper refinery plant (predecessor of the Chongqing Smelter) in Changsha, Hunan Province, China. The blister copper produced by a local copper smelter was casted as anode for electrorefining. The plant, with a capacity of one ton of electrolytic copper per day, was designed and tested in 1937. At the trial production stage, a total of 9 tons of cathode copper was produced. The plant was formally put into operation in July 1938. In the same month, more than 20 tons of electrolytic copper with purity over 99.9%Cu was produced. This was the first batch of electrolytic copper produced in China. In 1939, China’s largest non-ferrous metal smelting plant, Fengtian Gold Mine Refining (predecessor of the Shenyang smelter) was completed and put into operation in Shenyang, mainly producing nonferrous metals such as gold and silver, as well as copper and lead. In 1939, the Kunming copper smelter (predecessor of Yunnan Smelter) was completed and put into operation. The plant equipment, imported from the United Kingdom, was designed to produce 1,200 tons of electrolytic copper annually. In 1943, Jiatong smelter (predecessor of the Shanghai Smelter) became the 4th domestic cathode copper producer. Since 1949, China has gradually established a large copper industry. These developments are discussed in this paper. Today, China operates nine out of the twenty largest copper refineries in the world. With a total capacity approaching 9 million tons of copper per year, China has the world’s largest copper refining capacity. INTRODUCTION China is a country with a long history of copper mining. The earliest smelter in China in recent times was the Shanghai Smelter, which was built in 1912. From then until 1949, China successively built Chongqing Smelter, Kunming Smelter and Shenyang Smelter. The world's first copper electrorefinery was the Pembrey refinery built in the UK in 1869 (Lu, 1999). However, it was not until 69 years later that the technology was spread to Changsha, China.

An investigation into the causes of variable sulphur content in blast furnace metal produced at No. 4 blast furnace at the Port Kembla works of Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd. was carried out. Theprogramme included an extended and detailed experimental study of a great number of the operating variables of the furnace, on a cast-bycast or four-hourly basis, over fourteen days.Possible causes of the variation were found in irregular operation due to sinter variability, and it was also clearly shown that slag conditions were most important in controlling sulphur contents of pigiron. Some decrease in sulphur variability was achieved, arising partly from this investigation, and it is hoped to try magnesia additions to modify slag conditions for better desulphurizing.INTRODUCTIONSulphur in pig iron is a problem common to many blast furnace operators throughout the world, but the direct causes and means of overcoming them are functions of the available raw materials, and are hence more particular to each plant and its operating practice. Sulphur in hot metal influences the steel-making operations, the rolling operations and the quality of the finished steel. The main problem associated with high sulphur in steel is "hot shortness", which leads to cracking of ingots and billets in rolling, to poor surface finish and to poor welding properties in the finished steel. The roasting of sulphide ores and concentrates is often the first step in the production of metals or chemicals. In many processes, the production of sulphuric acid is viewed as a by-product, while in some plants production is an important economic factor. Regardless of the purpose, a pyrite roasting plant consists of mainly three plant sections: roasting, gas cleaning and sulphuric acid. With the addition of air, the pyrite concentrates are transformed into solid oxides and gaseous sulphur dioxide at temperatures of 600 - 1000° C. After cleaning and cooling, the sulphur dioxide in the roasting gas is further processed to sulphuric acid. Two types of reactors are used depending on the application: stationary or circulating fluid bed . For over 60 years, Outotec has progressively been developing the principle of fluidised bed technology in several different reactor types for a multitude of process applications. The versatility of the fluidised bed reactor system has manifested itself in the treatment of minerals, including solid fuels, and for metallurgical processes both in the ferrous and non-ferrous fields. Process applications have included roasting, calcining, combustion and charring of coals, as well as off-gas treatment. This paper provides a summary of the pyrite roasting technology currently used along with a simple cost comparison of pyrite roasting and sulphur burning processes.
