The corrosion properties of the skin and the bulk of semi-solid processed and high pressure die cast AZ91 alloy were studied in 5% NaCI solution by (a) analysing the corrosion morphology, (b) measuring electrochemical polarization curves, (c) performing electrochemical impedance spectroscopic measurements, and (d) immersion tests at constant pH-values. Using XRD, LM, SEM and EDX to evaluate the microstructure of skin and bulk specimens, the corrosion results were related to the microstructures of the particular alloys. However, microstructure and corrosion performance were found to be similar for both production processes, and only slight but distinct differences were found. Generally, the skin corrosion properties are inferior to those of the bulk, with the exception of the high pressure die cast AZ91 alloy, where the finer microstructure of the skin layer exhibits a better performance as showed by impedance studies and confirmed in long term immersion tests.

INVESTIGATION by German chemists during the World War showed that particles of iron oxide form rapidly in iron pipes carrying hydrogen gas under pressure when the gas contains small amounts of water. Under these conditions, the gas frequently exploded when expanding into a dirigible. The explanation of the explosions lies in the building up of a charge of static electricity in the flow just beyond the orifice and the ignition of the gas by a spark accompanying discharge of the electricity. Friction between the moving particles and the pipe generated the electric charge, which was manifested by a pale blue glow formed in the flow at pressures above two atmospheres. In one experiment, this glow, at eighty atmospheres, extended for a distance of forty to fifty centimetres, but did not ignite hydrogen and air mixtures until the charge was col-lected by a conductor and discharged across a gap between electrodes placed at the side of the column of gas. Autoignition did not occur when this discharge was effected at a distance from the gas column, nor if the gas used was thoroughly dried and free from impurities. The electric charge has been studied by placing various wire and screen conductors in the outcoming stream of gas, Guest having summarized these experiments. The application of these conclusions to fires in petroleum and natural gas issuing uncontrolled from wells is made in the following paper, citing the ignition of a wild gas well in Texas.

Recent publication of United States Bureau of Mines figures showed that the sand and gravel (3) industry is the largest single mining industry in the United States in term of yearly tonnage produced. The yearly production of over 500,000,000 tons per year now exceed bituminous coal production. This disclosure caught unawares many observers who have not been following closely the rapid-growth of this phase of mining. Along with this steady growth in production, the sand and gravel industry has gone through an accelerated and varied program of beneficiation in a period of the last ten years.

Introduction The mining of aggregates underground has grown steadily over the last 25 years. Growth has come in both production volume and in the importance this segment of the industry is playing in the continuing supply of construction aggregate. Underground aggregate mines will continue to grow in both number of operations and complexity, as the replacement of zoned reserves in metropolitan areas becomes crucial. This growth will result in a shortage of qualified mine managers, possibly limiting the success of these facilities. The aggregate industry will have to modify current practices in order to meet the growing demand for this specialized skill. Segment Growth Underground mining for aggregates is not a new idea. Martin Marietta has been operating underground mines since 1969, and currently operates 16 underground mines ranging in size from 250,000 tpy to 2,500,000 tpy. These mines represent less than 4% of the total number of operating locations, but contributed 9% of the annual production in 2004. Though they range in size and production capacity, the importance is evident. The 2000 United States Census revealed several trends that are of interest to the aggregate mining industry. For the period 1990-2000 the U.S. population grew by 33 million or 13%. There were nine major metropolitan areas with a population of five million or more. These nine areas accounted for 30% of the total U.S. population. More significant was the fact that the population growth in these nine metro areas was 25% of the growth for the entire country. These statistics tell us that the population is expanding in these major metropolitan areas at a staggering rate. The same thing is happening to some degree in every population center. Population growth increases the demand for local aggregate while reducing the available area to mine that aggregate. The need for an economical supply of aggregate to support community expansion is a problem that will grow as older quarries are mined out and closed. This will be an issue that communities of all sizes will have to deal with. A reliable and cost effective supply of quality aggregate is crucial to support community expansion.

1. The Pittsburgh bed is the most important bed in Ohio County, and virtually the entire production of coal in the county comes from this bed. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 tons per acre-foot of-coal in place, are estimated at 365 million short tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 356 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

The association of graphite with a fine grained pyrite in the Mount Isa lead-zinc ore was investigated from mineralogical and metallurgical standpoints. The pyrite has been partially or completely replaced by galena and to a less extent by sphalerite, pyrrhotiteand chalcopyrite with the retention of graphite films or inclusions. During lead flotation the graphite imparts a spontaneous flotability to all associated minerals, resulting in a low grade fraction, which we call the carbonaceous fraction, floating with and diluting the lead concentrate. In times of low metal prices this fraction seriously reduces the economic value of the lead concentrate. A flotation procedure was developed to upgrade the carbonaceous fraction separately, producing an economic concentrate and a tailing.INTRODUCTIONThe lead concentrate produced from Mount Isa ores can vary from 20 to 50 per cent lead, depending on the locality in the mine from which the ore is obtained. Variations of this order are independent of ore grade and lead recovery. The large variation is related to the presence in the ore of a variable fast floating low grade fraction known locally as the carbonaceous fraction because of its association with graphite. During conventional lead flotation with sodium ethyl xanthate the carbonaceous fraction floats rapidly and unselectively with normal Mount Isa galena.The paper discusses mainly the examination and treatment of an average carbonaceous fraction, defined here as the fast floating material in the mill feed of late 1956. How It Works To assemble a water resistant extensometer, a cylinder -shaped transducer and two support rings are pushed into the small-diameter section of the telescoping tube where the transducer is held in place by friction. The outside of the small-diameter section of the telescoping tube is then greased and slid into the slightly larger-diameter section. See drawing. 'The politics of mining in New Zealand' is a topic I chose myself because of its importance in the future of the New Zealand mining industry. There are many people in the industry who are cynical about politics, cynical about politicians and definitely cynical and often critical of political decisions. In fact, many industry people say they don't want to get involved in politics, they just want to get on with the business of exploration or mining. The point of my address is that politics is important and the industry cannot afford not to participate in the political process.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the Gays in which- the policies of the U.S. government, mining companies and third world countries affect each other with regard to the availability of minerals. The interaction involves U.S. policy towards the mining industry, the policies of the companies themselves, and the policies of third world countries towards the U.S. and multinational companies. It is assumed in this discussion that U.S. policy will continue to be to seek certain minerals from abroad rather than attempt to develop domestic sources for all its requirements. This would seem to make sense both from the standpoint of cost, and for preserving what domestic resources there are so as to maintain some degree of market leverage. In today's jargon, this means greater dependency on the "third world", which, for this discussion, includes virtually all the nations in Africa, South America and Asia. Concern for availability raises the important distinction between dependency and vulnerability, and as the Director of the Bureau of Mines has pointed out, the two are not the same. Dependency is not neccessarily a bad thing; it is vulnerability that counts (Norman, 1980)

Changing environmental laws, new operating requirements and the increasing accuracy with which the bearing capacity of driven piles can be calculated have all led to the development of hydraulic piling hammers, some very primitive, others very advanced. Users find it difficult to decide which model is the most suitable, because the specifications are neither uniform nor unamiguous. There are no standard specifications and, moreover, the majority of hammers are suitable only for a limited range of applications. For the user, however, it is important to choose a hammer which will meet future as well as current requirements and will not quickly become obsolete or be unsuitable for a particular job.

The history of the use of calcium aluminates in mining is discussed including a review of very rapid hardening concretes, anchoring using cement capsules and pumped ground control systems. Specific reference is made to the long term performance of highly abrasion resistant orepass lining in South Africa and the use of rapid hardening materials for a range of applications in Australian coal mine where water infiltration creates difficulties or where rapid repair or return to service is required. The topics covered in detail are, high strength abrasion resistant concretes with a 20 year, 30 million ton ore pass life. Rapid reinstatement of wet and worn roadways using mineral dewatering and rapid roadway rebuild solutions, all in I maintenance shift. The different applications are illustrated using examples from operating mines.

The Robbins Mobile miner has been in development for more than ten years. Two machines have been trialed in mining environments. While day to day performance to date has fallen short of the levels anticipated, instantaneous performance has been impressive for given rock conditions and continues to encourage further development. The Pasminco mobile miner has been committed for a 1.8km main decline extension at Broken Hill. M.I.M. Holdings, parent company of Mount Isa Mines, owner of the first mobile miner, are considering a new machine for McArthur River. Robbins, Pasminco, and The Centre for Mining Technology and Construction have, joined forces to accelerate development of .mechanical rock cutting techniques in general, and of the Mobile Miner in particular.

"The Powell mine is in western Quebec about 2 miles northwest of the adjoining towns of Noranda and Rouyn. It is the original discovery of the area, its gold-bearing quartz vein having been discovered in 1922. Considerable work was done on this vein by several companies and discontinued because the grade, when gold was $20 an ounce, was too low for profitable extraction. Between 1922 and 1924 an inclined shaft was sunk to 225 feet and drifts were driven 240 feet on the 100-foot level.In 1929, due to the discovery and development of the Horne mine at Noranda, interest was revived in the property. Sulphide deposits of the disseminated and vein types were explored on the Powell claims. On the B copper 'showing', a vertical shaft, now known as the 'old copper shaft', was sunk to ·a depth of 167 feet and 300 feet of lateral work was carried out on the 150-foot level. As no orebody was discovered this work was discontinued.In 1933 the present company, Powell Rouyn Gold Mines, Limited, was formed and the gold-bearing quartz veins were again tested by drilling and trenching. In 1936, the price of gold having risen to $35 an ounce, operations were resumed. Since then the inclined shaft (No. 1) has been deepened to 500 feet, a second shaft (No. 2, vertical) on the main quartz vein has been sunk to 2,630 feet, and ll; shallow vertical shaft (No. 3) on the same vein but in the south claim has been sunk to 500 feet.Lateral work now approximates 9 miles, and to November 15th, 1946, 1,685,674 tons of ore, which averaged 0.129 oz. gold per ton and 73.6 per cent. Flue dust from the sintering of base metal sulphides was leached to remove cadmium and arsenic. Leach liquor contained cadmium, zinc and small amounts of other base metals as chlorides. Results are reported of the use of a cation exchange resin Zeocarb 225 to separate the base metals from the arsenic. The resin was eluted with sodium chloride or sulphate to give a solution of relatively concentrated cadmium suitable for recovery by zinc cementation. The limited solubility of sodium sulphate presented some practical problems which were investigated. Another problem was the precipitation of lead sulphate in the resin during elution.INTRODUCTIONWhen lead-zinc sulphides are sintered prior to smelting, the gases passing to the flue are mainly uncondensable but contain a certain proportion of sublimates and dust particles which deposit in the flue or are carried, after condensation in the gas stream, to some form of dust extraction equipment.The recovered dust is a complex mixture of base metal sulphates, sulphites, sulphides, chlorides and oxides, the composition depending on the original concentrates. A large proportion of the cadmium and some of the arsenic originally in the concentrates finds its way to this flue dust, the treatment of which can be a convenient means of removing these elements and controlling their concentrations in the main lead-zinc smelter circuit. However, disposing of this material represents an appreciable waste of base metals as well as a serious toxicity hazard.Sulphide Corporation Pty. "The original design of mine openings and pillars at White Pine was based upon traditional assumptions; i.e., that the principal load is due to the weight of overburden, and that horizontal stresses are equal to one-. third of the vertical.Beginning January, 1964, borehole deformation measurements confirmed suspicions that the principal stress is horizontal and several times greater than the vertical.Vertical stress appears to be directly related to depth, but lateral stresses vary considerably in direction and magnitude. The direction of major principal stress lies parallel to the bedding and is apparently parallel to tension joints. Lateral stresses appear to originate from an igneous intrusive.Mining induces stresses which add to the primitive stresses, in some areas precipitating failure. In this paper, rock failures are illustrated, methods of measurement and typical results are given, and measures to counter or utilize the lateral stresses are described."

A series of liquid fuel fire experiments evaluated the comparative responses of five types of commercially available smoke detectors and a diffusion-mode carbon monoxide (CO) detector under normal and reduced airflow conditions based upon the alarm times of the detectors. These experiments were conducted in the Safety Research Coal Mine at the U.S. Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Research Center. Two of the smoke detectors had manufacturer set alarms. For the other three smoke detectors, an alarm point was defined in terms of their background analog signal and the detector's electrical output noise under ambient conditions. A correlation was developed of the travel time of 5 ppm CO between pairs of CO detectors with the travel time calculated from entry and crosscut volumes and measured airflow. Based upon the relative performance of smoke detectors in this limited study, smoke detectors can be as effective as CO detectors for mine fire detection once identifiable alarm values are defined. Implementation of smoke detectors as part of an atmospheric mine monitoring system will improve mine safety.

"Bubble surface area flux (Sb) is the surface area of bubbles per unit time per unit cross-sectional area of flotation machine. The units are: (m2 bubble surface/s)/(m2 cell) or s -1. For bubbles of mean size db (m), s b = 6-Qg/A db where Qg is the gas rate (m3/s), and A the cell cross-section (m'). This parameter is now receiving wide attention as the possible key machine variable in flotation diagnosis and modelling. The concept is described and the potential use of sb is illustrated by work on flotation columns and mechanical cells. In column flotation of recycled paper, the dependence of ink recovery on s b was the same regardless of size of column or type of sparger. In mechanical cells, it has been established that the rate constant is related to Sb independent of impeller type.The use of s b is limited by the problem of measurement, primarily that of estimating db. A prototype probe designed to estimate db (and hence sb) based on conductivity measurements is described. Exploratory work with the probe in a mechanical cell suggests the promise of making estimation of s b routine.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is the result of interaction among variables associated with the feed particles, chemistry and the machine (flotation cell). Trying to isolate the effects of each aids in process diagnosis and is at the centre of attempts to model flotation. The machine variables that have been investigated include the air flow number, the power number and specific power (Harris, 1976). None have survived as the basis for predicting flotation response perhaps because they did not include directly the properties of the bubble swarm (or dispersion). Recently, Gorain (1 997) explored the relationship between the flotation rate constant and various ""gas dispersion"" parameters notably: superficial air rate (Jg = Qg/A, where Qg is the volumetric gas rate and A is cross-sectional area of cell), bubble size (db), gas holdup (Eg, i.e., the volumetric fraction of a cell occupied by gas) and bubble surface area flux (sb = 6.Jg/db). Of them all, Gorain et al. (1997) conclude that the latter, the surface area flux, correlated best with the flotation rate constant. This concept was adopted from column flotation where it was used to estimate, among other factors, the maximum amount of gas that could be injected (Finch and Dobby), 1990). Let's start by reviewing the concept. Following that some examples of where the concept has been applied will be described to illustrate the current interest and finally we will consider how to measure the surface area flux."
