Particle Mechanics and the Design of Cyclone Tribochargers Triboelectric separation is a dry electrostatic technique that has shown promise in several particle processing applications. A tribocharger uses contact or friction to differentially charge particles of different materials, which are then separated by an electric field. The initial tribocharging process is poorly understood, with tribocharger design and operation largely a matter of trial and error. A better physical understanding of tribocharger operation would therefore be of immense value in the optimisation of triboelectric separation processes. A combination of charge measurements, trajectory modelling and high-speed video has been used to relate charging to particle mechanics in a cylindrical pneumatic cyclone, one of the most effective tribochargers for mineral separation applications, and the preliminary results are presented here. The consequences of these observations for cyclone tribocharger design and operation, and for tribocharger design in general, are discussed.

After an unsuccessful transfer from the laboratory to the pilot plant of galena flotation technology which used sodium metabisulphite and ethyl xanthate, laboratory flotation tests were conducted to identify any unusual variables which had a deleterious effect on the position of the lead rougher grade recovery curve for Hilton and Mount Isa silver-lead-zinc ores. Two variables (pulp temperature and contact time for ethyl xanthate and sodium metabisulphite) had important deleterious effects.The findings allowed a successful transfer of the laboratory process to a pilot plant scale process. The effect of temperature was important because the higher temperature (40°C) in the pilot plant pulp increased significantly the rate of reaction between ethyl xanthate and sodium metabisulphite. In the laboratory process at 20 to 25°C, the reaction rate was lower and did not interfere significantly with the process. The contact time for the two reagents was also important in the pilot plant scale process because of the higher reaction rate at 40°C.To employ ethyl xanthate in the pilot plant process, special precautions were required. Further, a collector (Aerofloat 241) from the dithiophosphate family was used successfully in the pilot plant process.

A technique that enables excellent color photograph production from black and white negatives of electron microprobe x-ray images is described in this paper. The photographs are made by superimposing one, two or three negatives of black and white x-ray images individually through assigned primary color filters directly onto color print paper. When used to examine metallurgical or geological microstructures, the resulting color photograph provides detailed, qualitative information about spatial arrangements, elemental associations and relative concentrations of at least three elements. The technique is simple and straightforward, requiring only standard darkroom equipment. The use of color to display or present complicated microprobe data also allows a non-technical reader or audience to better understand the data.

"A significant effort is expended on preparation of the capital estimate for feasibility studies. The development of the operating cost estimate is usually allocated a significantly smaller budget and less emphasis is placed on ensuring the accuracy of the operating cost. This paper presents a comparison of capital and operating costs of hydrometallurgy processing plants in order to demonstrate the importance that variations in operating costs have on the overall life-of-mine costs. The analysis is supported by a case study on the operating costs of a water treatment plant at an existing Australian hydrometallurgy facility at the feasibility design level. INTRODUCTIONDetermination of the economic validity of a minerals processing project is a critical outcome of a feasibility study. In many cases, the financial results of the feasibility study will determine if the project should proceed to execution. Ensuring that these results are reliable and built upon sound engineering practices allows companies to make informed decisions on resource opportunities and the selected technology.The methodology for developing a capital cost estimate at the feasibility level is well established. Specialist engineering estimators use budget quotations, first principle estimation and rules-of-thumb to develop an estimate with an accuracy of typically -10% to +15%. Cost reporting software packages are used to methodically build up the estimate from design information supplied by the engineering disciplines. Risk analysis and capital expense workshops are carried out to identify potential deficiencies in the estimate. It is widely recognized that in order to successfully produce a feasibility level capital estimate with an appropriate level of accuracy, a rigorous development process is necessary.The development of the operating cost estimate is typically less rigorous than the capital cost estimate. The operating cost is normally derived by the process engineering discipline and rarely are specialist estimators used to support the development. The allocated budget for producing an operating cost is usually smaller and less emphasis is placed on ensuring the accuracy and contingency reflect the most likely operating cost scenario."

In the present number of Mining and Metallurgy, issued on the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Institute, it appears appropriate to chronicle a few of the interesting incidents respecting its early life. We are fortunate in being able to cull the following notes from unpublished manuscripts of Doctor Raymond and Doctor Drinker, than whom no other members could have written with greater exactness and fidelity. THE seventh decade of the 19th century may be said to have marked an. era in the history of the world. Industrially and .commercially it was marked by the wide application and utilization of discoveries already made, which came to their full effect at this period in steamships, railways, telegraph and cable lines; the standardization of parts in machines, from watches to locomotives; the use of 'dynamite, antiseptic surgery, the open-hearth steel process, the compressed-air rock-drill, the electric generator, and the Gatling gun. Through the opening of the Suez canal in 1870 the maritime trade of the world was revolutionized, sailing vessels were supplanted by steamers, while ocean cables and ocean "tramps" brought about far more rapid movement of commerce than had before been experienced. Politically, this period was marked by the sudden birth of the German empire and the beginning of that intensive internal development of the national resources of that empire in preparation for colonial extension and war, the amazing result of which has been made evident by the recent world conflict. This paper is one of a buries being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods and costs at various mines in the United States, and is a description of the mining practice at Ajo, Ariz., where the New Cornelia Branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation mines copper ore from an open pit, and operates a concentrator for the treatment of the ore thus mined. "The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL) is leading an effort to develop the next generation of self-escape breathing apparatus for egress from confined spaces in emergency scenarios. A backpack style closed-circuit mine escape respirator design was one configuration explored as part of the research imperative directed by the 2006 MINER Act. Stakeholder feedback from MSHA and at the NIOSH Breathing Air Supply Partnership Meeting indicated a smaller belt worn unit that does not sacrifice performance is desirable. This paper outlines some further technology advancements that may be investigated toward developing such a small-sized respirator. Technologies being considered are novel chemicals for improved carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption and oxygen (O2) production, eliminating a dedicated CO2 scrubber by incorporating its function in the spaces of the respirator’s breathing loop and storing O2 in a liquid form with long standby capabilities. When these technologies are applied to a future design, there is the possibility of having an escape respirator that can be belt worn and capable of being certified to 42 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 84 standards, including sub-part O for escape purposes including mine escape. BACKGROUND NIOSH NPPTL has a Research and Development effort to provide mine workers with state-of-the-art breathing air technologies to comprehensively support initial and continued self-escape, refuge alternatives, and rescue needs, resulting from mine emergencies. As part of this R&D effort, NIOSH invested in the development of a next-generation closed-circuit mine escape respirator (CCMER) which would be compliant with NIOSH’s respirator standard requirements, 42 Code of Federal Regulations Part 84, including sub-part O. The design features of the CCMER also address the MINER Act’s requirements for transitioning between devices without the need for doffing the initially donned device. It would also allow for improved protection when using voice communications with a donned device ."

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of delayed blasting experiments at a West Virginia contour coal mine that resulted in smoother highwalls. The 17; were smoother due to reduced overbreak and inherently safer A, to reduced likelihood of rockfall. Reduced overbreak was accomplished by an increase in the highwall hole delays, which changed the effective delay pattern geometry and the direction of burden movement. The blast delays in the highwall holes were 50 to 100 ms longer than the mine's nominal design pattern (flat V, 17- by 42-ms surface delays, 200-ms in-the-hole delay). The burden movement was effectively changed from a 45* angle to 90* with respect to the highwall. The results of the blast delay changes were evaluated using terrestrial photogrammetry to generate vertical profiles at regular intervals. This evaluation showed that delay changes produced generally smoother vertical profiles.

A Bureau of Mines investigation identified no mineral deposits in the Lost Creek RARE II area. Sand and gravel has been mined from alluvial flood plain deposits just outside the RARE II boundary. An oil and gas lease application which includes the eastern portion of the RARE II area is pending. Abundant basalt in the area can be crushed and used as aggregate; but it could not compete with similar deposits in more favorable locations, or with cheaper substitutes such as volcanic cinders or sand and gravel which are available outside the study area closer to major markets. No indication of coal or geothermal energy resources was found. INTRODUCTION Location and Access The Lost Creek RARE II area encompasses 8,300 acres (3,400 ha) of Lassen National Forest in north-central California, about 20 mi (30 km) north of Lassen Peak. The closest city is Redding, California, 50 air mi (80 km) southwest. Peripheral access is provided by State Highway 89 passing near the western RARE II boundary (fig. 1). The Pacific Crest Trail traverses the western margin of Hat Creek Rim adjacent to the eastern boundary of the area.

ClameR,* Philadelphia, Pa.—Unfortunately, prior to the war no serious attention was given to the conservation of tin, notwithstanding that this country is practically dependent upon outside sources for its entire tin supply. Tin is of vital importance in many industries, but it is surprising how many and how excellent are its substitutes when we become acquainted with them. Tin has always been a relatively high-priced metal, and it is part of the human attitude to associate high prices with high standards; it is not until the price of a commodity becomes well-nigh prohibitive that we hunt for substitutes, because the idea of substitution seems always to involve an assumption that the substitute must necessarily be inferior. The history of the development of bearing bronzes is a striking example of this policy. In the early days, copper-tin alloys were almost universally used, the idea then being prevalent, which is still held by many, that a bearing to resist wear must be hard, and the harder the better. The favorite bronze bearing contained 90 per cent. copper and 10 per cent. tin; frequently, in service which was considered severe, even higher proportions of tin were used. Agglomeration techniques are widely used by industry to form fine particles into larger masses that are easier to handle and process. One area where agglomeration is potentially useful is in heap leaching operations. With-out agglomeration, fine particles travel through the heap, clogging the spaces between the larger particles and resulting in poor leach solution flow. Poor flow of leach solution will result in long leach rates and/or decreased metal recovery. Agglomeration immobilizes the fine particles and therefore improves heap permeability to fluid flow. Additional additives (binders) are needed to prevent agglomerates from breaking up as leaching solution percolates through the heap. Type II Portland cement and lime are two well-known binders used in gold and silver leaching, but these are limited to alkaline leaching environments. Various other products have been tested as binders, including polymers. This paper summarizes the benefits of agglomeration in heap leaching and the results obtained from the testing of several different agglomeration binders in heap leaching operations.

Rare earth elements are essential for modern life products and green technologies. Recent supply constraints have boosted the development of rare earth projects after the price peak of 2011. The feasibility of a project depends on the definition of a processing route, which in turn depends primarily on the rare earth mineral, with monazite and bastnaesite representing the two most relevant minerals. Monazite-type ores usually contain high acid consumption impurities, such as iron, aluminum, calcium, magnesium and phosphates, and may also contain prohibitive levels of radioactive thorium in its composition. Based on thermodynamic analysis, the present work discusses the fundamentals of a selective process route for rare earth extraction from monazite ores with high iron content. This process involves sulfation by means of concentrated sulfuric acid and roasting at a high temperature. The route yields high rare earth extraction with low iron and thorium extraction and low acid consumption. Rare earth extractions as high as 80 percent were achieved, while iron and thorium extractions were lower than 1 percent, and acid consumption was lower than 0.34 kg of sulfuric acid per kg of ore. The operational window was compared to the one predicted by thermodynamic modeling, with 700 °C representing the optimal roasting temperature.

Typical sedimentary sequences overlying coal seams consist of interbedded sandstones, siltstones, shales, and rider coal seams. In many surface coalmine settings, these sediments are saturated; and prior dewatering of them is necessary for effective and economic mining, including the stacking of saturated spoils. Such sedimentary sections usually have a very low vertical hydraulic conductivity that does not allow them to drain in a timely manner prior to their being stripped. One potential solution is installation of drainwells. Drainwells are small diameter wells that can collect water laterally from the various more permeable layers in the overburden and then gravity drain it to a lower layer – often the coal seam being mined – where it can be removed by pumping wells or sumps located in the bottom of the pit. A ground-water flow model utilizing the 3-dimensional finite element code MINEDW has been used to evaluate the effectiveness of usingdrainwells in a hydrogeologic setting that is typical of the Powder River Basin. A series of numerical simulations were completed using various combinations and spacings of drainwells and pumping wells to dewater the overburden and coal seams. The numerical simulations suggest that drainwells can be a very effective method of overburden dewatering.

"A new process is disclosed for the recovery of gold and/or silver values from activated carbon wherein they are adsorbed as cyanide complexes. A unique chemistry allows the new process to use mill process water containing an inexpensive, non-hazardous compound as the eluant. The new process has an elution period of 5 hours at 98°C. The gold in the eluant can be recovered by electrowinning or zinc precipitation. The new elution process is simple, reliable, and provides an eluted carbon that may not require thermal regeneration before reuse. Retrofitting the new process to existing processes such as Zadra, Anglo, and others will not require significant capital expenditures.IntroductionThe efficient and reliable elution process for gold/silver from activated carbon is a very important process in the gold mining industry. The most common techniques for elution of gold cyanide from activated carbon are the Zadra and Anglo procedures.Specialized elution techniques like the Micron and Acetonitrile processes have not been commercialized to significant extent probably due to relatively complex unit operations and expensive reagents.Important functions of the gold recovery circuit are:Efficiently recover gold/silver from the loaded carbon.Carbon is in good condition for reuse for optimum recovery.The pregnant solution is amenable to electrowinning or zinc precipitation to recover gold/silver from the solution.The whole process to be simple and short to reduce gold inventories.Present Elution ProcessesTable 1 shows some carbon elution processes that are available today. The two main elution processes used in the industry are: (1) the Zadra process, in which hot cyanide solution is circulated through an elution column and electrowinning cells; and (2) the Anglo American Research Laboratory (Anglo) process, consisting of a pretreatment step with caustic cyanide solution, followed by elution with deionized water."

Groundwater and associated pore pressure represent elements that can have a negative impact on surface mining and slope stability. Groundwater flow and deformation within a slope influence each other. An increase in pore pressure will result in a decrease of effective stress; and conversely, if the pore pressure decreases, the effective stress increases. Slope analysis and slope design calculations require good information on pore pressure distribution around an open pit excavation. Until recently very little pore pressure data were available and assumptions had to be used. Location and design of measuring points depend on geological and structural setting, geotechnical domains and practicality. Good planning and the use of sensitive point piezometers to measure in situ pore pressures means that real-time data can be collected and used for the construction of flow nets, the determination of pore pressure distribution around an open pit mine, the validation of the dewatering/depressurization requirements, the calculation of the efficiency of the dewatering system and finally the use of pore pressure data in slope stability analysis. The recommended layout for a monitoring system, types and design of piezometers, data collection and use of the pore pressure data are presented.

A few months ago, Congress passed, and President Bush signed, a national energy bill. Designed to decrease the nation’s dependence on foreign sources of energy, the bill earmarked several billion dollars to increase the use of U.S. coal reserves. The bill also modified permitting regulations to speed up development of the coal reserves located on federal land. Coal currently supplies more than half of the nation’s electricity needs. And as housing starts continue to in-crease and with the nation’s appetite for electronic gadgetry, the demand for energy in the United States will only go up. That means coal producers must expand production while at the same time containing costs so they can enjoy this period of improved coal prices.

The removal of iron impurity from zinc calcine was studied by magnetization roasting and magnetic separation. The effects of roasting temperature, magnetic intensity, ore grinding, and leaching pretreatment on iron grade and recovery were investigated. The results indicated that iron recovery increased with the increase of roasting temperature or magnetic intensity, while iron grade was always less than 22%, depending on the fact that the magnetite were not liberated completely. The good liberation was difficult to be achieved by ore grinding but was easier by acid leaching, since the magnetite grains were very fine. After the leaching pretreatment, the recovery of 76.31% with iron grade of 53.24% was obtained by one roughing and cleaning. The SEM/EDS analysis showed that a part of sphalerite, zinc ferrite and other gangues were mixed into the iron concentrate, while some of fine magnetite was reported to the tailing.

In this Bureau of Mines evaluation of the domestic supply position of tungsten, certain tungsten resources in the United States are estimated as to quantity and grade and then are systematically costed in detail (excluding exploration costs). A supply curve is developed which depicts the quantity of tungsten (WO3) up to about 15.5 million short ton units that is producible at calculated price levels ranging from about $13 to $125 per short ton unit. About 10.4 million short ton units are available at a calculated price that is less than the present market price ($40). Total known resources amount to about 40.2 million short ton units. A very large portion of that quantity was not costed due to inadequate information on either resources or processing methods. Further exploration and research would have a significant effect on the availability of tungsten in the United States.
