IN the discussion on the paper on subsidence by R. V. Norris and H. W. Montz (Teohnical Publication No. 153), H. N. Eavenson has been good enough to quote some of my views regarding the phenomena of subsidence; he has, of course, only mentioned these briefly, and as he has not represented them quite correctly, it is evident that I have failed to make them clear. Seeing that he, and apparently some of the others who took part in the discussion, appear to hold views different from my own, I think it advisable to put my opinions down as definitely and as clearly as possible, because it appears to me at least possible that some of the differences above referred to may be differences of language and definition rather than of fact. The statements I propose to submit refer to the simplest cases, namely where an area in a practically horizontal bed has been entirely worked out. My experience has been confined to beds of bituminous coal and of ironstone, but D I do not at the moment see why there should be any difference in principle between the working of a bed of anthracite and one of bituminous coal, provided that the other conditions are the same. I wish to emphasize that I am considering the conditions of complete working out of the mineral bed with the roof allowed to come down and form goaf in accordance with the general British practice; 1 am excluding, therefore, methods of hydraulic, pneumatic, and hand stowage where extraneous material is brought in to hold up the roof. I am also excluding the case of bord and pillar working where pillars of small size are deliberately left in, apparently with the idea that these will subsequently crush and let the roof down gradually. Such a method of mining has long been discontinued in this country, indeed in Europe generally, and I venture to predict that the time will come when such a recklessly wasteful method will no longer be tolerated even in the United States. Further, I am referring entirely td static conditions after the mineral bed has been worked out and the ground has come to rest; the phenomena that occur during the course of extraction are much more complicated, and these I am not discussing here. The proposal of the nip zone angle determination in HPGR crushing process is presented in the paper. Knowledge of the nip zone angle value, in turn, makes it possible to determine the real maximum pressing force in the high-pressure comminution. Two methods of determination of this maximum pressure were proposed and verified. The first method is based on the roll?s geometry, and the change of the HPGR chamber?s volume together with the roll rotation, while the second one considers the outlet gap width impact. Results of the nip zone angle calculations according to both methods are similar and show convergence with the real operating conditions. The verification was carried out in a piston-die press, and experimental results show that methodology of the nip zone angle determination presented in the paper has its practical confirmation. A proper determination of the nip zone border makes it possible to calculate the comminution probability of given type of material and is a basis for the HPGR crushing process modeling and optimization. The Mother Lode district in California is probably better known as the land of Bret Harte and Mark Twain than as a gold-producing district, although in this respect it holds an important place. The history of quartz mining on the Mother Lode dates back to the '50s, when, after the first fever of the gold rush, men began to look for something more permanent, if not more lucrative, than the placers. Since that time, the discoveries, shutdowns, and reopenings of the many mines, together with the varying fortunes of their numerous operators, constitute an interesting chapter in California history, but one too long to include in a description of mining methods. The district is well situated, so far as physical conditions are concerned. The Mother Lode extends along the western slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, about half way between the crest and the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys, the country traversed consisting of low rolling hills—typical foot-hills. The elevation varies from 1000 to 1800 ft. and the climate is most desirable. There is an abundance of water, timber is easily obtained from the higher foot-hills a few miles east, and cheap hydro-electric power is generated practically on the Lode. These natural conditions are conducive to low costs in mining and have been the deciding factor in allowing profitable exploitation of the comparatively low-grade orebodies. Transportation facilities are not bad. Five branch railroads, from the main trunk lines in the valley, tap the district at intervals of from 10 to 30 miles, and the roads connecting these are fairly good for trucking purposes. Labor is made up of several nationalities, the principal ones being American, Spanish, Jugo-Slav, Italian, and Mexican. There were few Mexicans on the Lode prior to 1919, but the shortage of labor, experienced generally by the mining camps of the country in the years following the war, made necessary the hiring of some. The percentage of Mexican labor rapidly increased in 1920 and for a year or so thereafter, but it has now diminished until at most of the mines only a few Mexicans are working. Of the different nationalities, Americans are the most efficient and Mexicans the least.

"Recent efforts at Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has led to the successful development of atmospheric and marine corrosion resistant high tensile Thermo Mechanically Treated (TMT) bars with minimum specified yield strength of 50 kg.mm-2. These rebars are increasingly being used for a wide range of end-applications, namely, concrete reinforcement structures, bridges, flyovers, dams etc. Welding is an important processing tool for each of the above applications. In view of the importance of welding, a comprehensive evaluation of the weldability properties has been carried for the two grades of steels using Submerged Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) process; the most popularly used technique of welding of reinforcement bars (re bars).Implant tests were conducted to assess the cold cracking susceptibility of the steels. The static fatigue limit (SFL) value, determined for the atmospheric corrosion resistant (Cu-TMT) rebars under no preheat and no rebalcing conditions was found to be 63.8 kg mm-2, which was significantly higher than the Minimum Specified Yield Strength (MSYS) (50 kg.mm-2). This indicates adequate resistance to hydrogen induced cracking (HIC). On the other hand, the SFL value obtained for the marine corrosion resistant rebars (Cu-Cr TMT) under no preheat, no rebaking conditions was found to be inconsistent. Repeat of the test with fully rebaked electrodes (350°C-2h) resulted in a high SFL value (60.3 kg mm-2)_The rigidity of the structure or restraint influences the susceptibility of the weld joint to cracking. The cracking tendency increases with restraint intensity (K) of an assembly. The critical restraint intensities determined for the two steels were found to be· in excess of 1680 kg/mm.mm, indicating good welding behaviour with the following welding conditions : for Cu-TMT rebars with no preheat and no rebaking and for Cu-Cr TMT rebars with no preheat and fully baked electrodes; that is under low hydrogen levels."

There has been a reduction of coal production in the United States due to environmental pressure and the increased use of natural gas. This Bureau of Mines report describes a technique for determining the confining pressures that must be provided for stabilizing underground openings in incompetent rock. The technique is adapted for use with a nonlinear finite-element computer code, NONSAP, to obtain stabilization pressures for linear or nonlinear stress distributions in the rock media around the excavation. This analysis permits a point-wise calculation of active rock pressures that depend on the values of shear stress and strength along the excavation surface. The approach is applied to the solution of several sample problems. The results show that both the magnitude and the distribution of stabilizing confining pressures are significantly influenced by rock and joint strengths, joint orientation, and biaxial nature of the load field.

Introduction There are times when meditation on the past is worth while. Too often does it happen that in the busy routine there appears t9 be little time for reflection, and little good or benefit to be derived from what has already taken place, or what has become past achievement. Under conditions such as those that prevail at present, consideration is being given to many subjects that a few years ago were not looked upon as worthy of time or thought. The temporary lull in industrial development is permitting of a stock-taking investigation, a perusal of past activities, and a planning for future development with the return to normality. It is not proposed to include much new data in this address, but the endeavour will be made to survey, in resume, the sequence of events which led up to the birth of the mining industry in Canada, and to show how, as new discoveries were made, the centres of interest changed from time to time until mineral development extended across Canada from the Atlantic to the Pacific. It will appear, also, that external causes have accentuated mineral development at one time and retarded it at another. Early Records A, historical background to the mining industry extends even to an earlier date than the discovery by white men of that part of the continent of North America represented by Canada. It has been stated that the aborigines were still in the neolithic stage when the white man arrived. One metal only was known to the natives, and that was copper, obtained from possibly many parts of Canada, but particularly from the shores of lake Superior in Ontario, from the Coppermine river on the Arctic coast, and from die coastal regions of British Columbia.

Oolitic iron ores have significant economical importance because of their extensive resources in the world. However, their utilisation is often quite limited due to the high content of phosphorus inside. The phosphorus is often finely disseminated in the oolite structure and generally not liberated in the form of free particles. The iron ore used in this work is a typical oolitic goethitic iron ore with high phosphorus. The process of phosphorus removal from this ore is difficult because the phosphorus is not present as distinct minerals. As a result, no physical beneficiation process is able to separate the phosphorus from the iron bearing phases. The current concentrate contains low iron grade (Fe ~49%) and high phosphorus content (P 0.7~0.8%). The acid leaching is a potential way to dissolve phosphorus. Previous studies have shown that the thermal treatment makes the phosphorus more accessible for the acids and enables more efficient phosphorus dissolution. Some chemical additives are reported to enhance this phenomenon. A series of tests have been carried out using roasting - grinding - magnetic separation - leaching technologies to remove the phosphorus from this current concentrate. In the first stage, several tests were performed at pilot scale under the same conditions as described in some publications. The achieved results were similar to those from previous tests at laboratory scale. In the second stage, new test conditions were investigated in laboratory scale in order to achieve better result and to reduce the operational cost.

The Jundee gold mining operation is located in the Western Australian Yandal Greenstone belt. Jundee is a mature operation encompassing multiple and complex underground ore resources, dwindling open pit reserves, large surface stockpiles, small satellite resources and two near-mine but stand alone process plants. The imminent completion of continuous open pit mining and the associated drop-off in total mill feed precipitated a review of the strategic mine plan and development of options that would optimise the exploitation of the remaining mineral resources and the utilisation of the existing plant and infrastructure.An initial review of the strategic decisions to be made, available options as well as the quantity, complexity and co-dependency of the strategic variables quickly led to the conclusion that an Operations Research style modelling approach would be appropriate. An 'off-the-shelf' program engine by the name of WHATSBEST! (LINDO Systems Inc.) was chosen on the basis of price, reputation and ease of use. The model was formulated with the unknown variables (being the ore mining rates) expressed as a proportion of the maximum achievable ore mining rate from each source. Costs were defined as variable or fixed, with this definition being a key aspect of the modelling process. The critical application of the model was in determining the optimal extraction rate of ore, the destination (ie Jundee or Nimary mill) and the sequence of extraction of each ore source that maximized the cash flow of the operation. The program was designed to be able to quickly derive an optimal result from the many variables, replacing the previous laborious iterative process of arriving at an acceptable answer by means of several large and static spreadsheet models. This paper presents the process of selection, formulation, application and scope of operation of the turn-key linear and non-linear program strategic model now used as part of the Jundee Operation strategic decision making process.

The importance of the Broken Hill mining field may be gauged from the fact that since the discovery of the ore-body in 1883, till the end of 1931, approximately 43,000,000 tons of ore have been raised.The lode covers a length of 31 miles, and in places is upwards of 300 ft. in width. The ore, as at present mined, consists of an intimately blended mixture of lead and zinc sulphides with silver and gangue minerals.Structurally the lode conveys the impression of a huge longitudinal arch (when viewed from the east or west), having its apex or crown near the centre of the field, in the leases of the Broken, Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., where the lode outcropped at the surface.The minimum depth of the lode in the Proprietary mine was some 500 ft. from the surface, but huge undulations, having an average pitch of 45°, carry the extensions of the arch gradually deeper, to those places where active stoping operations are now in progress in the workings of the North mine at one extremity, and the South and Zinc Corporation mines at the other. The depth of the lode from the surface, as exposed at present, is approximately 1700 ft. at these extremities.The structure and physical character of the ore-body, and its containing walls, are so complex and varied that almost every type of mining problem is met with.

"It is now possible to use 3D X-ray tomography analysis for plant-site characterization of coarse particles at a sampling rate of about 3 kg/min for particles which range in size from 150 mm to 1 mm at a voxel resolution of about 150 microns. This is quite a significant advance in X-ray tomography technology and should be useful for plant-site coarse particle characterization (size, shape, composition, density, texture, grain exposure, mineral liberation) with a response time of minutes after receiving the sample. Applications in the mineral industries are discussed including the coal industry, aggregate industry, metal mining and the processing of industrial minerals. INTRODUCTION Plant-site characterization of coarse particles at coal preparation plants, crushed stone/aggregate plants, and mineral processing plants is needed to improve plant capacity, product quality, and/or process efficiency. Not much on-line coarse particle characterization is done at these plants. Some limited information regarding particle size is obtained on-line from reflected light images using systems such as the OPSA, Split, and WipFrag analyzers. Even laboratory analysis of coarse particles has been difficult because of the large amount of sample required to insure statistical significance of the results. During the past decades laboratory 3D characterization of particles from energy and mineral resources by X-ray tomography has been demonstrated and used to good advantage [1, 2]. 3D X-ray tomographic analysis had its origin in the medical services industry; it is used to provide internal images of the human body and now has also been developed for non-medical applications [3]. Figure 1 shows a schematic diagram for the cone-beam geometry micro-CT system. In our case X-rays from a microfocus X-ray generator are partially attenuated by the sample (a packed bed of particles) that is made to rotate in equal steps in a full circle about a single axis of the particle sample. At each rotational position, the surviving X-ray photons are detected by a planar two-dimensional array (image intensifier) large enough to contain the shadow of the specimen. These two dimensional projection images are collected using conventional video technology. The video signal for each projection is then converted to a two-dimensional digital array by an image processing system. Finally, a three-dimensional image is reconstructed from the collected set of projection images. With the availability of automated high speed X-ray tomography [4] it now seems possible to do plant-site particle characterization at a sampling rate of about 3 kg/min for particles which range in size from 150 mm to 1 mm at a voxel resolution of about 150 microns. Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. Geological evidence from tropical laterites indicates clearly that platinum group metals are taken into solution and precipitated to form grains larger than those in the source rocks. Platinum and palladium move differentially in the surface environment, with Pt partitioning into soils and eluvial or alluvial deposits while Pd remains more mobile in natural waters. Natural organic acids, particularly humic acid, can interact with platinum-group elements and concentrate them even in areas where their content in rocks is very low. Experimental work has confirmed that Pt and Pd can be taken into solution by humic acid at room temperature and in geologically short time-spans. Solubility and deposition may be controlled by physicochemical conditions, reaction kinetics or an adsorption effect, or there may be two competing reactions, solubilisation assisted by organic matter and a kinetically slower metal precipitation

As part of a Bureau of Mines program to investigate recovery of manganese (Mn) from low-grade materials, laboratory studies were made of four samples of mill rejects: Three from Montana and one from Peru. These studies demonstrated that certain mill-waste products can be a potential source of manganese. Both manganese oxide and carbonate minerals were recovered by flotation in an acid circuit with a fuel oil-tall oil emulsion as collector. Sintering) required to prepare a physically acceptable product, also was used as a method of beneficiation. In addition to being low-grade, some of the samples presented problems of intimate mineral association and complex textures.

This paper describes a situation that many drilling and blasting contractors have found themselves in – a client?s fear of the use of explosives. In the summer of 2007 Blasting Services Ltd was asked to undertake some drilling and blasting work in an abandoned quarry that was being restored for a housing development. Previous quarrying operations had left a series of overhangs that were considered unsafe and required removing. The site contractor considered that the best and safest way to carry out this work was by drilling and blasting. Blasting Services Ltd, with the technical assistance of Exchem Explosives, designed a drilling and blasting regime to accomplish this work with a series of trim blasts. The design took into account the close proximity of a structure in very poor condition and the imposed vibration limit of 6.0 mm/s (0.24 i.p.s.). The faces were profiled, holes drilled and explosives ordered. A few days before the first blast was due to be carried out the client decided that the poor condition of the nearby structure meant that the use of explosives could not be permitted. This decision was made despite the blast design indicating that the vibration level would be well below the 6.0 mm/s (0.24 i.p.s.) limit.

PRODUCING operations abroad during 1940 were shrouded in the fog of war. Little, if any, concrete information is available, and the data that issue from the belligerent countries are too frequently distorted for military purposes, for the volume of supply of gasoline and fuel oil has become an important strategic secret. Despite this lack of information signs indicate the spread of a slow paralysis which is gripping producing operations in foreign countries. Only in the Caribbean area are developments proceeding normally and even there the destruction of the Western European market is being seriously felt. This creeping paralysis is being brought about partly by the serious shortage of materials so necessary for drilling and other producing operations such as steel, machinery, and the like-together with a scarcity of that prime munition of war-money. Markets too have been curtailed by the operation of exchange control as all exchange is needed to support war efforts. As a result, gasoline is tightly rationed in all belligerent countries. The growing casualties in shipping are fast restricting the water-borne trade in petroleum, but have had a local stimulating effect in some areas where the risk is less or where water-borne transport can be efficiently used as for instance Trinidad and Egypt. The type of product needed for war effort, particularly the great demand for aviation gasoline, has changed the schedules of .refinery operations. As a result of all these influences the world oil picture outside the United States- has vastly changed during the year.

PRESIDENT SCOTT TURNER officiated as chairman of the opening session on mining methods, Monday morning, Feb. 15. The first paper was that of Max H. Barber on open-pit mining in the Lake Superior district, read by C. F. Jackson. W. L. Taylor stated that liquid-oxygen explosive had been tried but that the operators are satisfied with the explosives used; lb. of dynamite breaks one ton of rock. Although black powder is considered the most effective explosive, the factor of safety has decided in favor of high explosives. Lucien Eaton told of the Michigan Lime and Chemical Co.'s large L. 0. X. plant at Rogers City, Mich. Mr. Turner referred to this plant, also said that the Bureau of Mines is shortly to issue Bulletin 349 completely covering the use of L. 0. X. from its inception. W. D. B. Motter, Jr., gave some items concerning Chuquicamata, Chile. Twelve years ago the blasts moved 850,000 to 1,000,000 tons, but average shots now move 250,000 to 300,000 tons. One pound of L. 0. X. breaks 3.7 tons, against 3.1 tons by dynamite. Another speaker told of some large dynamite blasts in open pits, one of 360,000 Ib. in March, 1931, and another of 430,000 lb. to be shot in 1932. Tests have been made to determine the effect of large shots on the surrounding country. Mr. Taylor said that 4- and 5-yd. shovels were preferable to those of 8 yd.; their performance is better and cost is lower.

Modern high-performance disc filters such as the BoVac Disc Filter have set new standards in applications where large capacities of solids, liquids and air have to be managed through the filters. These disc filters have an enormous hydraulic capacity. For applications in mineral processing - with a special focus on tailings – which typically have high solids throughputs but low filtrate and air flows, this capacity can be used to expand the filtration area while maintaining the benefits of very good cake discharge even with thin cakes (4-5 mm) and a high filter speed. Research work over the last century has proven that increasing the filter area should be achieved by increasing the disc diameter. Because adding more discs leads to big problems with the cake discharge. However, as the disc diameter increases, the filter segments become longer and heavier. A suitable compromise was therefore found by doing both. The result is the first vacuum disc filter that offers significantly more than 300 m² of filtration area, but has no more than 6 discs.

Escalating electricity costs are one of the biggest operational cost drivers in mining. The trend to use high-powered auxiliary fans delivering increased airflow to meet the dilution requirements of diesel equipment, together with the reliance on ducted systems rather than traditional flow-through systems to ventilate areas, increases the overall energy requirements of ventilation systems. To manage and reduce electricity costs energy management systems can be implemented, inefficient operating units can be replaced and the operation of energy-consuming components of ventilation systems can be optimised.This paper describes the process followed to design and develop an energy-efficient axial flow auxiliary fan. The fan-targeted design was based on static pressure and volume flow rate requirements incorporating higher overall fan efficiencies. A brief overview of the results is given, including the aerodynamic design procedure using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis. The mechanical design criteria used, including stress analysis on the rotor and designs to improve the vibration levels of the fan, are also presented. Through this study it was demonstrated that the aerodynamically designed rotors using profiled and twisted blades improve the total fan efficiency considerably when compared with some of the older-generation fans using cambered plates. The latter were typical in the mining sector in South Africa at the time of the study where average overall fan efficiencies of standard cambered fans less than 63 per cent and some of the older-generation cast aluminium blades have peak overall fan efficiencies of about 65 per cent. Peak overall fan efficiency of more than 80 per cent was achieved by using the described design and development process. Additional benefits are that the fans are quieter due to the better aerodynamic design and have a longer operating life due to reduced vibration levels.In conclusion, the use of CFD to develop fans to deliver the required volume flow at the required pressure allows quicker design turnaround time. It furthermore allows the ventilation engineer the option to specify a specific fan and is not limited to an off-the-shelf catalogue fan. It thus allows engineers to purchase a fit-for-purpose energy-efficient fan. The introduction of reliable fan control systems may, however, still result in the biggest cost benefit for underground mines.CITATION:du Plessis, J J L, Ratner, G and Viviers, S, 2015.
