The mining and beneficiation of minerals is the second largest end-use of electrical power on the planet, and comminution is by far the largest single contributor to this. Several jurisdictions, including British Columbia, have, in response to concerns about greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, adopted energy conservation legislation, including carbon taxes, carbon trading and conservation incentive schemes. Key to achieving conservation objectives is firstly an understanding of usage metrics across the various unit operations in the sector, and secondly an understanding of the conservation potential represented by available technologies and approaches in reducing end-use. This paper presents the results of a recent utility-funded study on energy use metrics and conservation potential at large open pit mines which are typical of the sector in BC.

This paper presents the development of a demand reduction and responsive strategy capable of reducing the electrical power demand, particularly during peak conditions. The work presented includes a case study of a UK colliery. Areas explained are the equipment installation at the mine; the development of the demand reduction strategy including the load profile database and prediction optimisation model. Some live production data from the power meter installation at the mine is also presented.

Ever increasing depth of mineral extraction presents a challenging environment for hard rock underground mines. High in-situ stresses and associated seismicity with potential rockburst hazards are the major decisive factors contributing to the choice of a ground support regime. Conventional ground support systems, designed primarily for static loads, are not always capable of providing safe working conditions for underground personnel in seismically active mines. Systems specifically developed to resist dynamic loading and allowing for larger deformations are therefore preferred alternatives. High-tensile chain-link mesh has a proven record of successful use in open cut operations in various rockfall barrier installations due to its high energy absorption capacity. It has also been used in underground operations in various parts of the world. This paper describes a method of mechanized installation of a chain-link mesh evaluated at the Kiruna mine in Sweden and South Deep Mine in South Africa. A purpose-built mechanized roll mesh handler was used in this evaluation. The handler is compatible with all standard multi-boom underground drill rigs and is operated utilizing the hydraulic circuit normally used for the feed arrangement. A number of key performance indicators have been identified as success criteria: ??A 30-50% faster installation compared to the conventional methodology ??The mesh should sustain any blast damage when applied to the blasting face ??No unraveling of the mesh when cut ??No failure of mesh under normal conditions Although the energy-absorbing mesh combined with yielding rock bolts is a ground support system of choice for rockburst prone conditions, the operational upsides recognized during the evaluation imply that this product can also be competitively used in less demanding ground conditions where customarily weld mesh or shotcrete are used as a primary surface support. The main conclusion: a fast, safe and fully mechanized installation.

This paper discusses the author?s work identifying international law norms of consultation with indigenous communities and poses a potentially counterintuitive argument that corporate stakeholders? interactions with indigenous communities may have effects on the content of those norms. The claim is counterintuitive because the international law of pertinence is customary international law, which arises from consistent state practice and opinio juris (a belief by states that they are acting in a way they are legally bound to do so). Customary international law traditionally has no reference to corporate conduct per se. The paper first surveys several sources on developing international law on consultation obligations. Then it references the impact these norms can have on corporate stakeholders in industries like mining. Then, it poses an argument as to an economic ratcheting effect that can occur through various agreements between corporate stakeholders and indigenous communities that then feeds through into international law via several mechanisms. The consequences for mining companies are diverse and include the possibility that conduct by one company can have longer-term implications for the obligations of other companies and, indeed, of states. The effects will differ in the context of different competitive environments and may actually have effects on the economics of different competitive models.

The scope of the SA (Situational Awareness) working group is to analyze the effectiveness of information delivery systems in mining equipment and develop a unified display design, to mitigate against the proliferation of screens within equipment cabs. This working group comprises a variety of stakeholders representing a cross-section of relevant mining and mining-related organizations. This stakeholder network will help guide the direction of the working group towards a common, mutually beneficial end. For now, the focus is on shovel displays; however it should be noted that this work is expected to form the foundation for similar work with other equipment in the future.

Historically bauxite-based refractories have been used in applications where andalusite-based refractories could work. Bauxite-based refractories were chosen over andalusite-based refractories mainly because of the availability of low-cost Chinese bauxite and also because many furnaces were designed by international companies that cannot easily access high-quality products. Currently, the availability of low-cost bauxite is under threat as a result of high export duties and tariffs as well as restrictions on the amount of material that China allows to be exported. South Africa is a major producer of andalusite, and this guarantees stability with respect to both availability and price. Refractories based on andalusite have an added economic advantage over bauxite-based refractories in that unlike bauxite, which requires high-temperature calcination before use, andalusite is used in its raw state. This paper constitutes a literature study of the merits, both technical and economic, of using refractories based on andalusite compared to bauxite-based refractories. Commercial deployment of Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) requires field testing of a scale that can stress the geologic reservoirs. One such reservoir of interest consists of unminable coal seams that exhibit favorable characteristics and depositional environments and lower pressure and temperature than other, deeper, reservoirs. Such conditions can reduce compression costs while utilizing the action of adsorption that offers a more effective carbon dioxide (CO2) bonding than free storage or solution. To ensure the success of such tests, a number of parameters should be accurately determined, such as the seam geometry and stratigraphy, coal porosity and permeability parameters as well as optimum injection conditions. In essence the CO2 injection model should be calibrated for the reservoir characteristics using all available data. History matching calibrations are based on gas and water production from existing wells prior to injection. This paper will present reservoir models that were developed for a pilot--scale 907 tonnes (1000 tons) CO2 injection test that was performed in 2009 through one legacy coalbed methane production well in Russell County, Virginia, USA. The model incorporates a number of individual coal seams about 0.3 m (1ft) in thickness located at depths ranging from 300 to 700 m (1,000 to 2,200 feet). Model calibration was performed through history matching to prior production data, and subsequently the model was utilized to develop different injection scenarios. The developed model was used after injection to calculate CO2 plume distribution patterns that were monitored at the injection test. The paper will present model data and assumptions with a special emphasis on the effect of hydraulic fractures and the skin factor to the coalbed methane (CBM) production model.

In some parts of the world explosions in mines are more commonplace events. Even in the more developed nations explosions have occurred in recent times. In some cases these mines have significantly lowered their lost time injury frequency rates and as such considered themselves to be ?safe? operations. The consequence of these explosions has been devastating. It is not just the loss of those underground, but also to the families that have lost people in them and the broader community that has lost friends, income, business opportunities, and in many cases support and sponsorships. It begs so many questions, ?What went wrong??; ?Why were the circumstances not foreseen??; ?What could have been done to prevent it??; ?How is it that no one stopped it, reported it, fixed it etc.??. Being held accountable for negligence, should not be overlooked, however this may not aid the processes required to find all the answers. If the nature of explosions is understood, the circumstances and tools to prevent them are readily available then the occurrence and reoccurrence are due to weaknesses or inadequacies of the systems of work or in the implementation of them. This paper restates the fundamentals of gas explosions, examines the options to control the underground environment through ventilation, gas management and monitoring, education and training. Case studies have been used to examine systematic failures in ventilation management. In some of these cases it is not so much, the system that had been developed, but the interpretation and implementation of the system that resulted in the failure and subsequent loss.

In copper ore mines located in the Pre-Sudeten Monocline the deposit mining using room and pillar systems has been carried out for more than forty years. When implementing mining systems in deep copper ore mines it appeared to be necessary to adapt them to variable geological conditions and natural hazards. In the initial period of exploitation there were mainly caving and rockburst hazards. The adaptation of room and pillar system was connected with a state of knowledge in the scope of identifying, forecasting and controlling rock mass hazards. The new solutions allowed the safe and efficient exploitation of a blanket deposit of variable thickness from about 2 to 15m, seated on progressively increasing depth. They included exploitation in constrained conditions, such as in protective pillars. In the exploitation period, technical and organisational activities aimed at rockburst hazard control were introduced including active methods for controlling rockburst hazard and procedures for conducting mining works in the rockburst hazard conditions. When mining at a depth exceeding 1,200 m, the exploitation method and technique are additionally affected by thermal hazard and by gas and rock breakout hazard. New solutions of the room and pillar system and a longwall system with mechanical mining have been developed for exploitation in the associated hazard conditions. The require application of many innovative solutions in the scope of mining process and ore haulage mechanisation, excavation support and forecasting and control of existing hazards. The main purpose of these solutions is to conduct the safe and economically effective exploitation of the deposit.
