THE assay of all metal ores is made by means of fusion and they are brought to their fineness in the same way as if they were a large quantity. However, I have told you of lead, tin, copper, and iron in their own places, that they are smelted in order to obtain a good assay so that one may know from its weight whether the quantity justifies the expense. This is their assay, for it does not matter whether it be done with great exactness. But the eye is turned with much more care to the assaying of silver and gold, since they are things of value, and one tries to have a more exact knowledge of them. Thus, when you have found the mountain and the vein of ore in it, and have also uncovered it or extracted it from the mine, it is necessary to make an assay of it, for though it is often apparent to the experts what kind of metal it contains, nevertheless they do not know for sure what virtues or evilness it may have unless the light of the assay itself shows them. Therefore it is necessary to extract a quantity in some way that is as free from rock and as good as possible. To a part of this, without any addition, a smelting fire must be applied in order to see whether it can be smelted easily. If it does not smelt by itself, you must consider and try to understand what causes this, for many times it comes from the rock which accompanies it and which contains much dryness and earthiness. I do not believe that one can know this with other judgment than by experiment with powerful and strong fires. Therefore, if the efforts of ordinary methods do not succeed, it is necessary to try to soften them by means of the company of fusible things-now with marble, now with ground glass, now with lead, galena,* or litharge from lead, or with iron scale, or else with the slag of other ores. With small operations even borax, saltpeter, or ochre is used and similar things, as I shall tell you in detail in the discussion of the preparation of ores for smelting. THE Institute of Mining Engineers has shown so much interest in the educational problem of profitably combining theory and practice, that it seems especially appropriate to lay before its members the methods and aims of the mining laboratory of which I have charge, and in which one form of combination of hand with head work is now being tried. If anything may be contributed toward the solution of this problem by the discussion which follows, my purpose will be attained. Whether it was wise or not to establish a mining school so far from the principal mining centres, does not now enter into the question. Given, a mining school already begun, how shall it be made most efficient in developing engineers who are trained to think for themselves as well as versed in the works of others? This is the ques¬tion with which we have had to deal. In considering the bearing of this laboratory work upon the students' preparation, it will be convenient to take it up under five different heads 1. The methods and aims of the laboratory. 2. The advantage to students of having a part, at least, of their practical work in the curriculum of their school. 3. The advantage to be derived by mines and works. 4. Degree of accuracy which may be attained in working ores on a small scale. 5. Results of work in the laboratory. 1. The Methods and Aims of the Laboratory.-During the May meeting of 1873, held in Boston, I had the privilege of reading before you a paper stating the plans and aims of this laboratory. Since that time we have been constantly following out those plans, and are more than ever convinced that we are working in the right direction. We do not feel that the time we have spent has been in any sense thrown away. Perhaps the aims of the laboratory can be most clearly shown by illustration. Many young engineers leave school thinking that they know everything. They go to the works, and expect to teach the superintendent something and the men a good deal, regardless of the fact that it is this spirit that has prejudiced workmen against schoolmen. High quality quartz crystals weighing more than 50 grams are required in several important industrial applications.30,31 Primarily, they are the basic raw material for precision, electronic, frequency control components; this includes oscillators and filters in both radio and telephone services. Quartz crystals are also necessary for optical lenses and prisms in special applications requiring high ultraviolet light-transmission as in spectrographs. Quartz wedges are regular components for petrographic microscopes. The application of crystalline quartz as a transducer* in ultrasonic devices has increased in recent years despite strong competition from barium titanate and magnetostrictive [f] devices. Some quartz is fabricated into delay lines for radar. Man has valued quartz for fabrication of art objects since the dawn of history. The art forms were and are painstakingly carved and polished to form intricate figurines, bowls, statuettes, and the well-known crystal balls. The largest known ball, made of perfect quartz from Burma, is now in the National Museum in Washington. It is 12 7/8 in. in diameter and weighs 106 lb 12 oz. Clear, pure quartz chips and small crystals not meeting the electronic-grade dimensional requirements are known by the Brazilian term lasca. They are used to produce fused quartz having wide application in laboratory equipment, as special glasses, for torsion suspension in scientific instruments, and as a source material for growing large artificial quartz crystals 18,35 Electronic applications far exceed all other uses in importance so any discussion of high-quality quartz crystals must be concerned almost exclusively with those functions. Historical Background Because of their ubiquitous character and natural beauty, quartz crystals have long been of interest and known to man. They have been found among early Egyptian and Chinese art forms and the Sumerians are believed to have fashioned seals, beads, and other jewelry from quartz crystals, perhaps 5,000 years ago. Also, American Indians made arrow heads and fashioned some simple objects of different kinds. The origin of the name quartz, although of Greek derivation, is uncertain. The Greeks appropriately applied their word for frozen water or ice, krustallos, to quartz. The present-day, large-scale practical applications of quartz crystals began in 1880-1881 when Pierre and Jacques Curie reported discovery of the "piezoelectric" effect. They found this effect first in Rochelle salt, a common product of grape-wine refineries, while studying crystal symmetry. Piezoelectricity is that property found in certain crystals, including quartz, whereby electrical charges of equal and opposite sign appear on opposite parts of the crystals when they are stressed. If equal and opposite forces are applied to two opposing prism edges of a single untwinned quartz crystal a positive electrical charge will appear on one edge and a negative charge on the other. The amount of the charges will be directly proportional to the force applied. This property seems to be intimately related to pyroelectricity

The Library of the above-named Societies is open frond 9 A.M. to 10 P.M., except on holidays. It contains about 70,000 volumes and 90,000 pamphlets, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated front sources of information. To these the Library, through Its Library Service Bureau, can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive especial attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and photographic copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining neaps, and to furnish general information on the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should he made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be, sent more promptly and in more usable shape.

The following is a brief account of the methods of measuring intelligence especially prepared for use in the U. S. Army, of typical results, and of some of their immediately practical applications. It has been prepared for the assistance of army examiners and for the information of all who are interested in the relations of scientific placement to military efficiency. Purpose of the Intelligence Tests Under the direction of the Division of Psychology, Medical Department, and in accordance with provisions of War Department General Order No. 74, mental tests are given recruits during the 2-wk. detention period. These tests provide an immediate and reasonably dependable classification of the men according to general intelligence. Their specific purposes are to aid: 1. In the discovery of men whose superior intelligence suggests their consideration for advancement; 2. In the prompt selection and assignment to development battalions of men who are so inferior mentally that they are suited only for selected assignments; 3. In forming organizations of uniform mental strength where such uniformity is desired; 4. In forming organizations of superior mental strength where such superiority is demanded by the nature of the work to be performed; 5. In selecting suitable men for various army duties or for special training in colleges or technical schools; 6. In the early formation of training groups within regiment' or battery in order that each man may receive instruction and drill according to his ability to profit thereby; 7. In the early recognition of the mentally slow as contrasted with the stubborn or disobedient; 8. In the discovery of men whose low-grade intelligence renders them either a burden or a menace to the service.

Chemically purified Zr95and Cb95 have been used in determining self-diffusion coefficients in the bcc phase of iodide zirconium over the temperature range of 900o to 1750°C. The temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficients could not be described by the usual Arrhenius-type equation over the entire temperature range. Values of the apparent frequency factors (D0)a and activation energies (Q)A for ZR95 varied from 4.8 x 10-6 to 2.5 x 10-2 sq cm per sec and 20,700 to 46,900 cal per mole, respectively, between 900°and 1750°C. Similarly, for Cb95, values of (Do) a and (Q)A varied from about 2.4 x 10'5 to 0.25 sq cm per sec and 26,500 to 56,800 cal per mole, respectively. The data may be described in terms of the a to ß transition temperature of 1136 °K and the absolute temperature of the diffusion anneals by the following eauations: SEVERAL studies on the diffusion of Zr95 in zirconium have been reported.1"5 The values of the constants contained in the usual Arrhenius-type equation for describing the temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficient, D = Do exp [- Q/(RT)], are summarized in Table I. The reported values of Do, the frequency factor, and Q, the activation energy, are seen to vary by factors of about 60 and 1.6, respectively. Examination of the data from any one study indicated reasonable consistency of measurements. The large discrepancies of over-all results, therefore, cannot be explained on the basis of experimental scatter. One possible explanation for the differences in results could be a varying impurity content of the zirconium. Another possibility is that the radioactive daughter, Cb95, influenced the values of some of the determined diffusion coefficients. Therefore, the first of the three purposes of this study was to reconcile the large differences in diffusion results that have been obtained. Several empirical relations have been proposed to relate the diffusion coefficients in solids with physical properties, such as the absolute melting point, the heat of fusion, and the heat of sublimation.

THE greatly enlarged demand for small sizes of seamless copper tube which has recently occurred, due particularly to the rapid growth of the electric household-refrigerator industry, has emphasized the superiority of phosphorized to tough pitch copper for the purpose of producing this commodity. In the manufacture of this material exceedingly heavy reductions by cold drawing are employed, customary practice involving as much as 90 per cent. reduction of cross-sectional area in four runs without intermediate annealing. Although this superiority has long been recognized by tube makers, no quantitative expression of it has heretofore been published. It is believed that the data herewith presented mill serve this purpose. Recent investigators are not in agreement as to the relative mechanical properties of copper containing small amounts of oxygen as compared with copper containing sufficient oxygen to produce that condition known as tough pitch. Hanson, Marryat and Ford1 found that "oxygen has a relatively small effect on the properties of copper." Johnson, on the contrary, states "it cannot be denied that it (tough pitch copper) is inferior to deoxidized copper . . . where severe mechanical manipulation is concerned." These authorities in the reports of their investigations, as might be expected from their conclusions, do not present data of a character requisite to a conclusive determination of the question.

A considerable saving in time and money has been effected by use of a specially designed stainless steel container for laboratory drilling mud test work. This container involves use of a standard tall-form stainless steel beaker for service in which the mud sample is heated to an elevated temperature and maintained there for protracted periods of time, while undergoing agitation to facilitate mixing of mud components. Agitation is accomplished by rotating the filled containers on motor-driven rollers within an oven. Several porcelain balls are generally placed in the containers to further improve agitation. Soft glass containers (.Mason jars) were used in this service in early work, and were found to be unsuitable for the following reasons: 1. Poor resistance to thermal shock. 2. Containers could withstand only relatively low pressures. 3. Accidental breakage in handling. 4. Chemical deterioration and subsequent mud contamination from reaction of high pH muds with the glass at elevated temperatures. Pyrex containers were also considered, but, inasmuch as they provided improvement only in items 1 and 4 listed above the additional cost was not believed to be justified. Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) is in the process of evolving a computer-based information system which will process all of the material selected for abstracting in the area of chemistry and chemical engineering and its related fields such as the earth sciences and technologies. This system is already operational to some extent and is expected to be fully utilized by 1971. The objective of CAS is to make chemical and related information more readily available, more usable and more used. Chemical Abstracts handle some 5000 abstracts weekly from 13, 000 journals and patents from 25 nations. These cover all of the 80 CA subject sections which relate to chemistry and also extend into areas of interest to geologists, mineralogists, and mining engineers. In this way, CAS fulfills its objective of complete coverage of its major fields, informative abstracting, and indexing to maximum specificity. The concept of a computer-based information system is that of a single machine-language data base into which the results of intellectual analysis of the literature are entered and from which computer programs produce a variety of publications and services applicable to the needs of a wide range of users.

The market at present supplied by shipments from the phosphate districts of Quebec, Ontario, and New York State requires high-grade ore, carrying from 75 per cent. to 90 per cent. of phosphate of lime. In sorting out such material by hand, much valuable phosphate is necessarily left in the "culls" or refuse, besides which, much phosphate-rock of low-grade is not now mined at all, because it cannot be made available by the crude method of cobbing and hand-sorting. The utilization of such material, which would, of course, greatly benefit this industry, requires either a mechanical separation or a chemical process which would concentrate the phosphate in a form suitable for agriculture. Considering the rich phosphate now shipped as the first class, we may arrange the lower grades in three classes, as follows: Second Class.—Cull-ore from the first class, and the mass of deposits having, as gangue, pyroxene or hornblende. The following table gives the hardness and specific gravity of the minerals concerned: Hardness Spec. gravity. Apatite,....... . 5 3.1 to 3.25 Crystalline limestone (pink calcite),. 3 to 4 2.5 to 2.9 Pyroxene,..5 to 6 3.23 to 3.5 Hornblende,.5 to 6 2.9 to 3.4 Feldspar (orthoclase),. .. . 6 to 6.5 2.5 to 2.6 It is evident that when pyroxene and hornblende are present in large proportions, this ore cannot be successfully concentrated by crushing and jigging. PETROLEUM technology was the sole subject of discussion at the meeting of the Petroleum Division at the Baker Hotel, Dallas, Texas, Oct. 6-7, except for the brief talks by President Becket and Secretary Parsons at the dinner on Friday evening. Even on this occasion, following the scheduled official features, it was in order to talk "shop." W. E. Wrather and E. A. Stephenson, respectively Chairman and Secretary of the Division, had planned for a meeting of this nature and by preference, apparently, the 122 who registered fell in with the scheme wholeheartedly. Not because the competent local committee had not provided for it, but by choice, the members just did not sign up for entertainment or field trips, but did attend largely the three technical sessions and engage in earnest discussion of the approximately dozen excellent papers. In this connection, and without question, the high lights of the meeting were the papers by Morris Muskat and R. D. Wyckoff, and Prof. W. K. Lewis. The former, entitled, "A Theoretical Analysis of Waterflooding Networks," had been entirely demathematized by the authors for presentation at this and the Los Angeles meetings; the author of the latter, which was on the "Physical-chemical Relationships of Hydrocarbon Gas-liquid Mixtures at High Pres¬sures," had airplaned to Dallas in the company of Dr. H. D. Wilde from Chicago in order to present his paper at the final session on Saturday morning.

The model developed by Tuylor for the calculation of Polycrystalline yield strength has been applied to the case of an aggregate hawing a preferred orientation. In general this procedure requires the specification of texture by means of weighting factors applied to specific orientations. The problem to which the model has been applied is that of the yield-strength aniso-tropy of cold-rolled aluminum whose rolling texture was described as a combination of (110)[112] and (311) [112] In this case yield-strength anisotropy is defined by the rutio of yield strength measured at an angle 8 to the rolling direction to that measured along the rolling direction. The method of calculation of yield-strength ratio as a function of ? is described and the results show good agreement with experimental values. The orthotropic yield criterion suggested by Hill has been applied to the results and the strain ratio R also calculated as a function of ?. This has been compared with calculations using the method suggested by Elias, Heyer, and Smith which does not exhibit suck good agreement with observation. one deficietlcy of the method presented is that the strain ratios used by are those applying to iso-Irobic materials. The method should therefore be reg-clrded only as a first abbroximation to the prediction of anisotropy. THE problem of calculating the stress-strain characteristics of polycrystalline aggregates from the properties of single crystals has attracted attention for a number of years. The most important contributions to this study have been those due to: Sachs,' Cox and sopwith,2 Taylor,3 Kochendorfer,4 Batdorf and Budiansky,5 Calnan and Clews,6 Bishop and Hill,7,8 Kocks,9 Budiansky, Hashin, and sanders, 10 Kroner,11 Cyzak, Bow, and payne, 12 Budiansky and Wu,13 and Lin.14 While the earlier work has been largely superseded, recent developments tend to support Taylor's solution" within the restriction imposed by his assumptions. The essential features of Taylor's approach were: 1) the material is rigid-plastic; 2) each grain experiences the same strain components as the aggregate as a whole (the problem was that of uniaxial deformation with principal strain components in the ratio 3) all regions of each grain deform uniformly; 4) work hardening occurs equally on all slip systems. While Bishop and Hill7 have generally validated this approach, there has been some criticism offered. Kocks? as pointed out that since multiple slip must occur the single-crystal data must be determined from orientations arranged such that polyslip takes place. Boas and Hargreaves,15 and others, have shown experimentally that the strain distribution within grains is not uniform, the strains in the vicinity of grain boundaries being less than those in the center of the grains. Both of these criticisms can be largely offset by the suitable choice of single-crystal critical shear stress. However, for the problem analyzed below, the critical shear stress is not directly used and, consequently, these criticisms lose their importance. The more recent contributions have attempted to obtain a more complete analysis by considering an elas-toplastic material and considering interactions between grains of differing orientations. Lin14 has considered the early stages of yielding for a polycrystalline aggregate having specific regions of defined slip plane orientations. On the other hand, Budiansky and Wu13 have allowed for these interactions for randomly disposed grain orientations and have calculated the polycrystalline stress-strain curves for crystals exhibiting either elastic-ideally plastic or kinematic hardening characteristics. This work has shown that yielding commences when the macroscopic stress is 2.2 times the critical shear stress for slip in a single crystal (7,). The yield stress-strain curve then rises becoming asymptotic to a value of 3.072 7,. This is close to the value obtained by Bishop and Hill (3.06) in their confirmation of Taylor's method. This, of course, is to be expected since, at large strain values, the elastic strains are negligible and the rigid-plastic model is satisfactory. The results of Budiansky and Wu indicate that the result obtained by Taylor is 7.7 pct high at a plastic strain which is two times the elastic strain at the initiation of yield. By defining the anisotropy in terms of relative values, the ratio of yield strength at orientation ?, to that measured in the rolling direction, the effect of the discrepancy in Taylor's solution is considered to be of lesser consequence. Therefore, it is anticipated that an analysis based on Taylor's solution, which can be quite straightforward, should provide a reasonable estimation of the anisotropy of materials having a preferred orientation texture. OUTLINE OF TAYLOR'S METHOD In fee metals there are four possible slip planes (the octahedral planes) and in each there are three possible slip directions (the edges of the octahedron), that is a total of twelve possible slip systems. von Mises16 has shown that at least five independent slip systems must become operative in each grain of the polycrystalline aggregate in order to preserve continuity of strain. With this geometrical requirement as basis and the assumptions previously listed, Taylor determined the operative slip systems for a number of orientations of the tensile stress axis specified in the unit stereographic triangle. TWO references can be found in the literature concerning the ternary system uranium-tantalum -carbon. C. H. Schramm, P. Gordon, and A. R. Kaufmam reported in this Journal1 on the existence of the ternary carbide "UTa10C4." They also report a second face-centered-cubic carbide phase in the system U-Ta-C, which they denote as "white" phase. The publication includes a reproduction of a Debye-Scherrer powder photograph of "UTa10C4" and a list of the sin2 0 values of this compound. H. Nowotny, R. Kieffer, F. Benesovsky, and E. Laube2 report the complete solid solubility between TaC and UC with a B1 structure. Since the ternary phase "UTa10C4" lies very close to the binary system Ta-C, and the established phase Ta2C with a C27 structure had not been mentioned by Schramm et al., it was thought worthwhile to compare the patterns of "UTa10C4" with Ta2C. The strong lines of the given pattern were indexed on a hexagonal unit cell with the approximate cell parameters a = 3.09A and c = 4.93A. These are the values reported for Ta2C in the literature.3 The correspondence between reported and calculated sin2 8 values may be studied in columns 4 and 5 of Table I. The agreement is fair, but there remain weak lines which cannot be assigned to the hexagonal unit cell. The extinctions correspond to those of Ta2C, but a comparison of the calculated and observed intensities of the Ta2C lines (columns 2 and 3) with those of the corresponding lines of "UTa10C4" (column 6) show occasional deviations. To clarify this situation, four new samples were prepared. The compositions of these samples were chosen in such a way as to observe any existing ternary phase in the system TaC-UC-U-Ta. The samples were arc melted in an inert atmosphere and annealed at 1100°C for 36 to 72 hr. Compositions of the samples determined by chemical analysis are given along with the results of X-ray investigations in Table 11. The following conclusions may be drawn from these data: a) No ternary compounds occur in the section TaC-UC-U-Ta of the ternary system Ta-U-C. The "white" phase reported by Schramm et al. corresponds to a solid solution between TaC and UC. Only one three-phase field exists: C27-B1-A2. (Both tantalum and ? uranium have body-centered-cubic A2 structures.) This article gives an account of the latest developments in the use of TBE for sink-float separation of silicate minerals. A number of minerals for which the process has been tested and found suitable are reviewed. Specific examples are discussed in relation to the particular problems of sink-float separation and recovery of TBE as compared with non-silicate minerals. The economic aspects are outlined. Silica and silicates comprise the most common and abundant group of minerals, and since they are present in variable amounts in most ores, they constitute an appropriate subject for the review and discussion of the recent developments in the use of TBE for mineral concentration. The silicates considered as a group have an extremely wide range of chemical and physical properties. Some of these properties, which are common to all minerals, are of importance to concentration by TBE and are discussed in some detail in this paper, as well as the development of methods and apparatus for concentration and recovery of TBE and several examples of concentration of silicates. PROPERTIES OF MINERALS WITH RESPECT TO CONCENTRATION BY TBE The properties considered as most important to concentration by TBE are specific gravity, structure, surface and shape. The specific gravity of a mineral is a fundamental property and is constant between very close limits for the same species of different sources if particles are pure and free from cavities or cracks. In many species, however, solid inclusions and changes in chemical composition due to replacement of elements cause variations in the specific gravity. The plagio-clase series of feldspars between albite and anorthite illustrate this point (specific gravity from 2.60 to 2.77). Fig. 1 shows the specific gravity distribution of some of the common silicate minerals.' The highest specific gravity is about 4.7 (zircon) and the lowest is 2.0 (sepiolite), with most of them ranging between 2.6 and 3.5. Although most of the silicates given in Fig. 1 are found as constituents of rocks, those generally considered as rock making minerals are comparatively few. They include quartz, feldspars, nephelite, sodalite, leucite, mica, pyroxenes, amphiboles, chrysolite, kaolin, talc and serpentine. These minerals may appear in igneous rocks as coarse crystals in granites, syenites and diorites or as very fine grained dispersions in basalt and felsite. When the latter rocks occur in an ore, their specific gravities depend on the minerals present and structure. The same is true for the sedimentary and metamorphic rocks (sandstones, shales, gneiss, slate, schists). A comparison of specific gravities for the minerals listed in Fig. 1 with that of TBE (see Table I) shows that the important rock-forming minerals, with the exception of pyroxenes, amphiboles and chrysolite (olivine), lie in the specific gravity range of less than 2.96 and can therefore be separated by TBE. Included are studies of gun features that influence bullet performance and penetration, and studies of the effect of perforator bullets on casing and the neat cement in the annulus. Discussion and data are also presented relative to the accuracy of depth measurements in deep wells. Introduction It is a common practice in the oil industry to effect the completion of oil wells by setting and cementing casing through the producing horizons and perforating the section of casing opposite the desired interval by means of a gun lowered into the well on a cable or on the tubing. This practice has been followed for some time, and this method of completion has been given considerable study by the companies that render perforating service as well as by the oil companies that utilize their services. Through continued research on this subject, it has been possible to develop guns, bullets, and powder that will permit controlled firing at great depths, and penetration of as many as two strings of casing. It is the object of this paper to present the results of studies made of gun perforating in both the field and the laboratory. These studies were made to determine the factors that affect penetration of the bullet, burring of the casing, accuracy of depth measurements, and other items. It is hoped that by presenting the results of these investigations a better understanding may be obtained of certain of the factors involved in gun perforating and further investigation of the subject will be prompted. Subsurface Tests A well approximately 9000 ft deep, which was being prepared for abandonment, was selected for subsurface tests of gun-perforating experiments, In preparing the well for the experiment, 51/2-in. casing in the hole was pulled and racked in the derrick. A test section of pipe, which consisted of 65 ft of 5-in. 18-lb J-55 casing centered inside 7-in. 28-lb N-80 casing, was placed in the derrick corner and the annulus between the two pipes was cemented from the bottom up with 161/2 lb per gal neat cement, which was mixed and displaced with a cementing truck in the usual manner. After the cement had been allowed to harden for about a week, the test section was lowered into the hole on the 51/2-in. casing to a depth of 6600 ft by casing measurements. The hole was filled with drilling fluid weighing 10 lb per gallon. A perforating company was called to perforate the pipe, but was not advised that an experiment was being conducted. The company was asked to check the total depth (to cross pins in the bottom of the test section), then to raise the gun a given distance and fire a given number of shots with 1/2-in. bullets, pick up another distance and fire a given number of 3/8-in
