The photoluminescence of Pr, Nd, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb in CdS, and Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb in ZnSe has been observed from crystals Prepared by diffusion using rare earth metals and an excess chalcogen pressure. For a given temperature, time, and chalcogen pressure the spectral characteristics were very reproducible from run to run, and the emission intensity for Nd, Er, and Yb in CdS was as high or higher than the best vapor phase doped crystals we have grown. For a few rare earths it was found that certain conditions of diffusion tend to yield optimum rare earth emission intensity with respect to the background lattice emission. Photoluminescence measwements of Yb in CdS as a function of depth gave a profile which was neither a Gaussian nor complementary error function. Part of the profile appears to arise from a fast component of the diffusion and the other part from a slow diffusing component. At 960°C and 33 atm S pressure, a com -plimentary error function approximation of the slow diffusing component gave a diffusion coefficient of D = 1.3 x 10-9 sq cm per sec. MOST of the studies of emission from rare earth ions in II-VI compounds have been reported on crystals doped during growth,1,2 although Kingsley and Aven prepared ZnSe:Er by diffusion for paramagnetic resonance and fluorescence studies. Pappalardo and Dietz prepared CdS:Yb by diffusion, but they made optical absorption measurements., We know of no study on the properties of rare earth diffusion in the II-VI compounds. To date we have diffused Pr, Nd, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb into CdS, and Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb into ZnSe and observed the rare earth emission spectra. For a given temperature and chalcogen pressure, the emission characteristics are very reproducible from run to run and for Yb, Nd, and Er in CdS, as good as the best crystals we had prepared by doping during vapor phase growth.2 The emission of Pr, Ho, and Tm has been observed in CdS prepared by diffusion for the first time. Previous attempts2 to prepare these later three materials by vapor phase growth were unsuccessful. The problem of obtaining reproducible characteristics in II-VI semiconductor compound work is well known.5 Not only is it difficult to reproduce results from one laboratory to another but it is sometimes difficult to reproduce results from one growth run to another under ostensibly identical conditions within one laboratory. This situation has been particularly bothersome in research on the luminescence of rare earth activated ZnS1 and Cds2. Crystals from one vapor phase growth run would show very strong rare earth line emission while crystals from a nearly identical run would show no rare earth emission. It was also observed on occasion that the intensity of the rare earth emission was not constant over the entire volume of a single crystal. MATERIAL PREPARATION AND INSTRUMENTATION Vapor phase grown boules of CdS were supplied by Dow Corning. This material was characterized by a free electron concentration of n - 3.5 x 1015 cm-3 and Hall mobility of 350 sq cm per v sec at room temperature. There were microscopic voids and decorated precipitates in some samples. The precipitates annealed out at diffusion temperatures but the voids remained. Single crystal rectangular samples of mm dimensions were sawed from the boules. The ZnSe was polycrystalline, UHP grade from Eagle-Picher. Poly-crystalline samples were sawed from the ingots. The samples were lapped, polished on one side, etched in a solution of 0.5 M K2Cr2O7 in 16 N H2SO4, and thoroughly washed in distilled water. A sample, excess sulfur (or selenium), and 5 mg of rare earth metal (turnings) were sealed in a 3.6 cm3 quartz ampoule at about 2 X 10-5 torr. The high chalcogen pressure used (1 to 30 atm) prevented thermal etching of the crystals and affected the diffusivity and solubility of the rare earth ions in the crystal lattice. For meaningful or reproducible results, it is thus necessary to specify the vapor pressure at which the diffusion was carried out. It is assumed that a negligible amount of the chalcogen was used in the formation of rare earth sulfides or selenides Our sulfur vapor pressure calculations are based on data assuming S2, S6, and S, molecules only in which case the equilibrium constants are given by6 where the pressures are expressed in torr. Selenium vapor consists of a mixture of Se2, Se4, Se6, and Se6 molecules. The selenium vapor pressure was calculated using equilibrium constants given by The status of the rare earth source during diffusion is unknown, i.e., the partial pressures of the rare earth metal and of the rare earth chalcogenides has not been determined. All emission spectra were recorded at 77°K on a Perkin-Elmer model 98-G spectrometer using a 640 line per mm grating. No correction was made for the spectrometer and detector spectral sensitivity. FROM the first days on the Norman beaches to the last days on the Elbe the Army Engineers of World War II lived off the countryside for the great bulk of the construction supplies needed for the fulfillment of their ultimate mission-to keep the army moving. To accomplish this end, vast tonnages of rock, timber, and steel were required in the construction of roads, railroads, and bridges. Combat Engineer battalions operated quarries under shell fire as a routine matter. An Engineer forestry company was decimated while cutting bridge timber on the Siegfried line. Oneof the more spectacular feats of the Army Engineers in obtaining construction materials was the operation of the Hadir Steel Works during the fall and winter o f 1944.

In order that the reader may not be misled, I feel it necessary to comment upon the title of this paper. "Laws of Rock Behavior," one may take as being part of the all-embracing "Law of Nature" and this, according to the Oxford Dictionary, relates to the principles of conduct recognized as being pleasing to God. I feel it would be presumptuous to erect a code of rock behavior on this basis, so turn to a secondary definition, namely that a "Law" is that which is intrinsically reasonable. It is extremely unlikely that any group of geologists, or workers in rock mechanics would be in complete agreement about what could be taken to be "intrinsically reasonable." Therefore, this paper does not present any deified utterances, but rather deals with a few aspects of rock behavior which I consider to be intrinsically reasonable and with which I hope the reader will concur. The mode of behavior of rocks in the Earth's crust covers the range from wholly brittle to completely ductile ; with a deformation time scale which may be measured in milliseconds, for some events such as meteoritic impact, or in millions of years for the tectonic deformation involved in mountain building. A complete survey is, of course, outside the scope of an introductory paper, so I must be both brief and selective in my treatment. Any attempt to establish the mode of rock behavior in the Earth's crust should take into account data and relationships established in laboratory experiments and correlate these with field evidence. Consequently, the first section of this paper presents a brief discussion of the experimental aspects of rock mechanics which are pertinent to the subsequent discussion.

Wildcat drilling for new supplies of gas and the expansion of previously discovered oil and gas pools were the principal petroleum activities in West Virginia .during 1942. Much of the new gas exploration is still uncompleted and still indecisive but various wildcats made substantial extensions to existing pools. Out of 53 wildcats drilled 27 resulted in commercial gas and 6 in commercial oil. Four of the oil discoveries also had commercial gas. No strictly new pools of oil or gas can safely be described as discovered but several scattered oil and gas wells previously drilled have been confirmed as the openers of definite pools; also, various completions closed wide gaps between apparent gas pools already discovered. The proved oil territory of the state was increased about 4850 acres and the proved gas territory about 51,000 acres. The new proved oil reserves should about balance withdrawals and the new gas may represent a substantial increase. Aside from the drilling in four rather lively pools, oil activity was slight because of unfavorable operating conditions and prices. Gas drilling also declined for reasons beyond the control of the operators. The account of operations, as gathered from trade journals and other reporting services, shows that 797 new wells were drilled, providing 119 new oil wells with 2762 bbl. of daily new production; 536 new gas wells with 1,228,501,000 CU. ft. of daily open flow: and 142 dry holes. Also... 76 old wells were drilled to deeper sands, with 71 bbl. and 26,034,000 cu, ft. of added production. On the new wells the oil average was 23.21 bbl. per well per day; and the gas average was 2,270,406 CU. ft. per well per day. On new wells the ratio of dry holes to completions was 17.82 per cent. On deeper drilling the ratio of failures was 21.05 per cent. Production of oil for the year was estimated by the Oil ad Gas Journal as 3,492,000 bbl., as compared with 3,378,000 bbl. in 1941. Production of natural gas for the year is estimated by the author as 220,000,000,000 cu. ft., as compared with the U. S. Bureau of Mines final figures of 207,000,000,000 cu. ft.* in 1941. General State op Industry Leasing of wildcat acreage increased considerably. The total land of all classes under lease may now exceed 5,000,000 acres. Taking into consideration completions, abandonments and corrected figures or estimates, Table I shows cumulative and late annual statistics. WHILE the yield stress of solution treated Fe-Cu alloys increases rapidly with aging, a precipitate has only been directly observed in overaged samples.'-" This precipitate is essentially pure fcc copper, the E phase. Hornbogen2 suggested that the initial hardening is due to clustering of copper atoms in a bcc iron matrix. Hornbogen was not able to obtain direct confirmation for such bcc clusters by either X-ray diffraction or electron microscopy; however, he did observe analogous clustering in Fe-Au alloys7 where the scattering factor difference between iron and gold is more favorable than that for iron and copper. Fujii, Nemoto, Suto, and Monma4 recently observed diffuse electron diffraction scattering in a 2.5 pct Cu alloy aged at 500°C: for 30 hr. They suggested that part of the diffuse SCattering was due to a modulated structure of 26 to 42 wavelength parallel to the (110) matrix plane. This disappeared with further aging. However, 30 hr at 500°C is well beyond the peak strengthening in this alloy which occurred at less than I hr at 500oc.4 By transmission electron microscopy they could not distinguish between quenched samples and samples aged to maximum strength. The purpose of the present investigation was to try to obtain further confirming evidence for a precipitation stage preceding the formation of the fcc E phase. Change in Young's modulus was selected for study be- EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The Fe-1.67 at. pct Cu alloy was supplied by the U.S. Steel Corporation in the form of a hot forged rectangular bar. The carbon and nitrogen contents of this alloy were 70 ppm and less than 10 ppm, respectively. The samples for Young's modulus measurements were made by cold swaging to & in. diam and cutting to 2 in. lengths. Tensile test samples 1 in. long were prepared by cold rolling to a thickness of 0.012 in. and then machining to gage dimensions of 0.5 by 0.012 in. For Mijssbauer studies, foils 1 mil thick were prepared by cold rolling. During fabrication the alloy was given intermediate anneals at 845OC followed by quenching. The specimens after preparation were solution treated at 1000°C (y field) or 845°C (a field) for 1 to 2 and 5 to 6 hr, respectively, in a dynamic vacuum of about 2 x lom6 torr. The tensile and modulus specimens were drop-quenched into iced brine through an aluminum foil which vacuum-sealed the bottom of the furnace tube. The MOssbauer foils were drop-quenched into helium gas cooled by passing through N2 (liq) in a copper coil. The grain diameter of the modulus and tensile specimens was between 0.025 and 0.035 mm. The samples were aged from 400" to 500°C in a dynamic vacuum of 2 x 10-6 torr and cooled by pulling into a water-cooled portion of the vacuum system. The dynamic Young's modulus was measured at room temperature using electrostatic excitation and detection of longitudinal vibrations.' Neglecting any length change during the aging, (this is expected to be comparatively small), the fractional change of Young's modulus (?Et)/Eav, is equal to twice the fractional change of the resonant frequency (?ft)/fav . ?ft =ft —fo where fo and ft are the resonant frequencies of a specimen before aging and after aging to time t. The measured f's, approximately 51,000 cps, were corrected to 25°C for any variation in the ambient temperature. The tensile tests reported were carried out at room temperature in an Instron with a 1000 lb full scale load cell. The flow stress reported herein corresponds to a strain of 0.002. The possibility of using unidirectionally solidified, two-phase alloys as an approximation to fiber composite materials is investigated. The short-term me.chanical properties and failure modes of unidirectionully solidified A1 (rich)-Cu alloys containing ap -Proximately 0, 17.5, and 27.7 vol pct of 0 phase 'fibers" are determined at temperatures from 25" to 500" and compared with those obtained for conventionul SAP alloys. In a previous publication,' hereafter referred to as I, the possibility of understanding some of the room-temperature mechanical properties of unidirectionally solidified castings was explored. For Al(rich)-Cu and Al(rich)-Mg two-phase alloys over a substantial range of compositions, the yield and ultimate strengths and common ductility measures were very adequately predicted from the principles of fiber strengthening4 and the analysis of ductility outlined by Gurland and Plateau." The results obtained in I suggest the possibility of using unidirectionally solidified, two-phase alloys to simulate fiber composite materials where the inter-dendritic second phase or constituent acts as the reinforcing material. Recent attempts concerning the fabrication of fiber conlposites have concentrated on producing composites with a good bond between fiber and matrix and with very long fibers so that their maximum contribution to the strength of the composite may be realized. However, these objectives are difficult to attain in practice and present fabrication processes are either extremely laborious or costly.13 The slow, unidirectional solidification of eutectics has received considerable attention as a method for producing composite materials. 5,6 This method can fulfill both of the above objectives but it is currently laborious, expensive, and has the additional disadvantage that the volume fraction of reinforcing phase cannot be easily varied. On the other hand, unidirectionally solidified, two-phase alloys, also with a good bond between the phases, are relatively easy to make and the volume fraction of reinforcing "fibers" can be easily varied by changing the average composition of the alloy. The disadvantage of the cast alloys is that the mechanical effectiveness of the "elongated interdendritic reinforcements" (EIR)* may be reduced due to their rela- tively short lengths, the w factor in Eq. [2] of I. However, if the EIR have a high strength their contribution can be considerable. For composite materials containing discontinuous cylindrical fibers of various lengths the ultimate strength is given by1 where it is assumed that the composite fractures when the fibers fail. In Eq. [I], a, is the stress in the matrix just prior to failure of the composite, Vf is the total volume fraction of fiber reinforcing constituent, Vf(l+) is the volume fraction of fibers whose lengths exceed the critical length, I,, which is defined as the shortest length of fiber in which the stress can build up sufficiently to break the fiber. af is the fracture strength of the fiber material, w is a factor accounting for the discontinuity of those fibers whose lengths exceed I,, 1-/d is the average aspect ratio of those fibers whose lengths are shorter than I,, and t is the shear stress in the matrix at the fiber-matrix interface. The factor w is dependent on the length of the fibers and also on whether deformation of the matrix occurs plastically or elastically. However, for a given length of fiber, w is smaller when elastic deformation of the matrix is assumed.' It is of interest to consider the properties of simple unidirectionally solidified, two-phase alloys at elevated temperatures in view of the possibility of using suitable modifications for high temperature service. Knowledge of the creep behavior of these materials is still rudimentary (although under active investigation) and the present paper concerns itself with short time tensile properties of some alloys similar to those investigated in I (i.e., unidirectionally solidified Al(rich)-Cu alloys). Unidirectionally solidified alloys containing 5.6, 17, and 23 wt pct Cu were tested parallel to the direction of solidification at temperatures from 25" to 500°C. In the present investigation, the alloys were homogenized for 2 days at 535°C giving a matrix of homogeneous a phase (5.2 wt pct Cu) and an interdendritic constituent (EIR) which was completely Q phase (53 wt pct Cu). EXPERIMENTAL Alloys of nominal composition 5.6, 17, and 23 wt pct Cu (containing approximately 0, 17.5, and 27.7 vol pct 8 phase, respectively, after homogenization at 535°C) were prepared by melting 1200 g of A1 (99.99 pct) in a high purity graphite crucible and adding the appropriate amount of freshly cleaned copper chips (99.9 pct). The molten alloy (at 700°C) was poured into a preheated graphite mold (also at 700°C) and the ingot unidirectionally solidified by impinging water on the steel baseplate of the mold. Used as a classifier in a plant expanding capacity or changing to closed-circuit operation, the liquid-solid cyclone offers the advantage of being adaptable to existing conditions. This paper presents the costs involved and experience gained from operating a unit of this kind. BY now application of the liquid-solid cyclone to various classification problems in the chemical and metallurgical fields is more or less familiar. A less publicized application receiving wider consideration as time goes on is its use as a classifier in closed-circuit grinding operations. This paper presents the costs involved and the experience gained from operating a unit of this kind. In May 1951 the Tennessee Copper Co. installed in its London mill at Copperhill, Tenn., a liquid-solid cyclone in closed circuit with a 6x12-ft ball mill. The circuit in which this cyclone is used is the regrind or secondary grinding circuit of a copper flotation plant. Originally it consisted of a 7x1-ft conical ball mill in closed circuit with a bowl classifier. Changes made in the primary grinding circuit of the mill necessitated a regrind circuit of greater capacity. The bulk concentrate to be ground was raised from 900 or 1000 tpd to 1200 or 1300 tpd, and to accommodate this increase a 6x12-ft ball mill which had been in the primary grinding circuit was moved into the regrind circuit. When this was done it was found that the classifier was too small to give efficient operation. Space in the plant was at a premium, and since use of the cyclone offered considerable economy the installation shown in Figs. 1-3 was made. The unit installed is a 24-in. diam cyclone classifier with a 20" cone angle. Diameter of the vortex finder is 8 in., the feed entrance area 20 sq. in. Maximum diameter of the adjustable apex valve is 6 in. and minimum diameter approximately 3.5 in. To refer again to Figs. 1 and 2, the cyclone* is mounted motor. It is charged with 18 tons of 1-in. balls. The overflow, or fines, passes by gravity directly to the copper flotation plant. The ball mill discharge and the new feed combine in a sump from which they are sent to the cone by an 8x6 SRL pump at a rate of 497 gpm. Pressure at the cyclone is 5 psi. For reasons dictated by the nature of the ore treated, particularly the bonding of fine grains of chalcopyrite to pyrrhotite, the froth from the second cell of the copper rougher circuit is returned to the regrind mill. This flow, which somewhat complicates the standard closed-circuit calculation, is seen in Fig. 1 to be 156 tpd of solids. This combines with the cyclone classifier underflow to constitute the ball mill feed. The requirement of the regrind product is that it be 77 to 80 pct —200 mesh. The liquid-solids cyclone operating in conjunction with the 6x12-ft mill adequately met this requirement. Of primary importance is the fact that this arrangement provided sufficient classification capacity to replace the undersized classifier and was capable of building up a circulating load to 87 pct, large enough to give an efficient grind. In this instance the circulating load is taken as the ratio of sands to new feed. Any comparison of performance between this liquid-solid cyclone and the replaced classifier would of course be unfair, since the bowl classifier was

The effect of fluid-flow rate and fluid viscosity on oil-water relative permeability determinations was studied using the "dynamic flow technique." In this work relative per-nleability curves were obtained for homogeneous small core .samples from several sandstorle outcrop form-utions. Radio-tracers were used for the determination of fluid saturation and for the detection of saturation gradients. Cobalt-60 in the form of cobaltous chloride was used as a water-phase tracer in some of the experiments. Iodine-131 in the form of iodobenzene and Mercury-20-3 in the form of mercury diphenyl were used as oil-phase tracers in other experiments. Flow rates for each phase were varied within a range of 2.5 to 140.6 ml/hr. Oil-phase vis-cosities under flowing condition,> were varied from 0.398 to 1.683 cp. The relative permbilities ob-tained were found to he solely a function of saturation and independent of flow rare, provided there was no .Saturation gradient induced in the core sample by "boundary effect." Even though equilibrium with re-sped to flowing conditions was obtained at the lower flow rates, where a saturation gradient exists, this equilibrium is of a "contingent"-type rather than the "steady-state" equi-librium implicit in the relative per-meability concept. The only effect of increasing the oil or non-wetting phase viscosity was to decrease the flow rate required for the elimina-tion of the boundary effect. Fairly good agreement between experimentally determined and calculated values of the boundary effect was obtained when the non-wet-ring oil phase was the only Flowing phase. INTRODUCTION In the characterization of reservoir rock, as well as in the solution of reservoir production problems, it is most desirable to have reliablc rela-tive permeability measurements for the rock and fluids of interest. Many techniques have been developed for the laboratory determination of the relative permeability of both large and small core samples. In varying degree, difficulties attend the use of all of the methods. Each of the methods requires the metered flow of fluids of known viscosity through the core sample under conditions wherein the pressure drop in the individual flowing phases can be measured or closely approximated. Since the relative permeability is a function of the saturation and distribution of the flowing fluids, some means of obtaining such information is also required. The laboratory determination of the relative permeability of a sample should give the same relative permeability saturation relationship that would exist if the sample were in place in the oil reservoir. The attainment of this objective is complicated by the fact that the use of small core samples for laboratory measurements is usually necessary. As a result, errors in measuring the relative permeability arise from boundary effects at either the fluid input or output ends of the sample; no significant boundary effect is anticipated at the sides of the sample normal to direction of fluid flow. At the input end of the sample a boundary effect exists if the flow fluids are not com- mingled as they would be in the reservoir. At the output end of the sample a boundary effect exists as a result of discontinuity of the capillary properties of the system. Here the flowing fluids leave the small flow channels and enter a collecting system having much enlarged flow channels. Thus, there is a tendency for the wetting phase to be retained by the core sample because of the attraction of the core sample for the wetting fluid. No reference is made to these boundary effects in either Darcy's equation or in the relative permeability concept. As a consequence the saturation effect peculiar to the input end of the core sample may cause an error in the effective permeability measurement, since some portion of the core sample must be utilized for commingling of the flow fluids. At the output portion of the core sample a saturation gradient or a saturation change along the axis of flow results. Since relative permeability is a function of fluid saturation, this saturation gradient may cause a variable permeability measurement, especially since extent and character of the saturation gradient can vary with fluid-flow rate. The most convenient method of minimizing the boundary effect, especially at the output end of the sample, is to flow the fluids of interest through the core sample at such high rates that the capillary forces arc insignificant as compared to the viscous forces involved in the fluid flow. Since recent work of a preliminary nature has indicated that fluid dispersion in the porous medium increases with the flow rate, the high flow minimizes the boundary effect at the input end of the core sample by enhancing the mixing of the fluids.

The drying of fine coal involves special techniques, which are discussed and analyzed. Types of dryers employing these techniques are described. Calculations are presented for new methods of dealing with the entrained dust that is always present in fine coal drying operations. NEW conditions, new requirements, and new methods have increased the demand for more efficient and more economical methods of drying fine coal. Dewatering of larger sizes may reduce the surface moisture to 8 or 9 pct. It is more difficult, however, to dewater sizes below 1/4 in., and some filter cakes still contain as much as 20 or 25 pct moisture. Increased freight rates and stricter consumer specifications have resulted in a demand for further reductions in moisture content. This can be obtained only by heat drying. Most modern methods of heat drying disperse or spread the mass of coal to be dried, in an atmosphere of dry hot gases. The more intimate the contact between coal particles and hot gases, the quicker and more efficient the drying operation will be. Two different techniques are generally employed, using either a fluidized condition or an entrained condition of the coal to be dried. Fluidized Condition Fluidization of a body of sand was defined and explained by Fraser and Yancey in a paper published in 1926.' This condition was artificially obtained and maintained by proper regulation of the rate of air flowing through the sand body. "The sand bath 'boils' uniformly on the surface," they write, "and feels like a fluid." The fluidization technique was also described and analyzed by Steinmetzer2 in connection with the operation of an air cleaning table. His main conclusions are as follows: "Fluidity is, for the particles involved, the possibility of motion with minimum friction. . . . Then fluidity requires the introduction of various forms of energy capable of neutralising frictions. Two solutions can be used— air and/or mechanical motions (such as the shaking motion of the carrying deck of the air table). The combination of mechanical and air energy will give the widest margins of size ratios and of bed thickness, translated in capacity per unit area of the carrying table." Richardson and Langston3 have indicated results obtained with a dryer working with a fluidized bed. They used a vertical tube type of dryer, however, without the assistance of any mechanical energy, and without any lateral motion of the fluidized bed. The capacity of such a dryer is too limited for practical applications, since the speed of the acceptable air currents is held to the speed of fall of the particles involved. Capacities as low as 182 Ib of coal per hr per sq ft of dryer area are indicated. As stated by Richardson: "A basic limitation to a fluidised bed dryer is that the velocities of the gas must be held within a definite range; with velocities of 10 ft per second, all coal minus 6 mesh in size will be entrained, and the operation is then similar to that of a Flash dryer." A fluidized bed must be virtually static. The coal particles simply kept in suspension offer a minimum resistance to the flow of gases, insuring the most favorable conditions for rapid evaporation of surface moisture. However, very wet fine coal, i.e., over 12 pct of surface moisture, will be delivered in the forms of mud balls, or as a soggy, sticky mass, almost impossible to disperse, sticking and acting as a wet blanket on the deck. Strong currents of gases and wide deck perforations will be required to punch holes in the wet mass and gradually loosen and fluidize it. The mechanics of fluidizing a bed of coal in a gas medium for the purpose of obtaining the most efficient drying condition are entirely similar when the fluid used is water and the purpose is to break up and distend a bed of coal to be cleaned so that perfect stratification according to densities will be insured. Purely mechanical energy is used in the basket-type jig, water pulsations in the piston and in the Baum-type jigs. A combination of mechanical motion and of air pulsation offers the most efficient and favorable conditions. Entrained Condition The most critical factor to be considered in the design of a dryer employing the entrained condition technique is the speed of the hot gases to be circulated in the drying column. With insufficient gas velocity, excessive amounts of the largest sizes will drop to the bottom of the dryer column without being thoroughly dried. On the other hand, high gas velocity will cause degradation, dust losses, and high power consumption. Figs. 1 and 2, reproduced from Hanot,4 show the relative importance of speed and temperature for various sizes of particles. It can be seen, for instance, that to maintain in unstable equilibrium particles of 1/4-in. size in a gas current at 500°C, a speed of 30 meters per sec, or 6000 fpm, will be required. For % -in. particles an almost prohibitive speed of 45 meters per sec, or 9000 fpm, will be necessary. In practice, maximum gas velocities of 3000 fpm are recommended; since power increases as the cube of the velocity, it can be seen that beyond certain limits such dryers would not be economical. IF you would allow me some liberties, I would restate the title of this talk as "Scientific Research, Our Greatest Resource," because that title would represent more clearly a present-day conception of the metals and minerals situation. It is a subject worthy of careful consideration. Canada and the United States are so similar and interdependent in their national economies that, in the following discussion, examples of conditions in the United States may be interpreted to apply to Canada as well. Moreover, it is a striking fact that the per capita value of mineral production in Canada and the United States in 1940 was almost the same. Therefore, in the consideration of this subject, I have made no attempt to differentiate between the two countries. Consumption of the world's mineral resources in the last few decades. and particularly during World War II, has been so enormous as to require some form of magic to ensure the continued progress of civilization in the face of a diminishing supply of these resources which are so critically essential. THE seriousness of the present tin scarcity has stimulated large consumers of this vital metal to develop drastic conservation measures in order to extend the available supplies to cover the emergency period. By devising new soldering methods and alloys the Bell System has contributed a substantial share in the tin conservation effort, Fortunately, the changes, as far as can be determined now, have not introduced weakness into the soldered joints. Some of the new procedures were already in the process of development at the onset of the emergency, while others were devised under its stress. In some instances, the newly developed solders were found to be more difficult to use than the alloys previously available, and would not have been introduced under normal conditions. One major change made that previously had been under consideration will result in large savings of tin. Unless service difficulties are encountered, this modification gives promise of remaining after the emergency has passed. The change involves a reduction in the amount of solder placed on a wiped joint between the cable sheath and the sleeve. Instead of the customary full sized wiped joint, a wipe of fillet proportions is formed. Through this change, a solder saving of more than 60 per cent per joint can be realized. Plumbers and cable splicers for many years have joined lead pipes and cable sheath by a soldering process called "wiping." The name is an apt description of the operation. For a wiped joint, the sections to be united' are heated by molten solder poured over their surfaces, and the resulting semiliquid mass is manipulated by wiping with cloth pads to a well rounded symmetrical form like the one shown in Fig. I, The operation requires considerable skill on the part of the splicer and close control of the composition of the solder. At first consideration, the problem of tightness in such joints seems simple but experience shows that even under the best conditions the fissures frequently found in the solder occasionally link and form a path that allows leakage to occur. In telephone cables not maintained under gas pressure, such leaks permit the entrance of water, which wets the paper-covered conductors and thereby impairs the insulation value and causes service interruptions. By going to an extreme and wiping off all the solder in excess. of a fillet, it has been found that many causes of porosity are eliminated. Figs. 2 and 3 show cross sections of joints wiped in the old and the new ways. The saving in solder, and consequently in strategic tin, is evident. The field splicing forces find that joints are easier to make by the new method and are less likely to be porous. The metallurgical considerations that are responsible for the success of the fillet wipe are of interest. INTRODUCTION The resurgence of coal mining activity in the United States, brought on by the spiraling costs of fossil fw1 energy in the Seventies, has come at a time of intense public concern for the quality of the environment. Notwithstanding pressure on our economy to develop alternate sources of fue1 energy to the import of oil, the legislatures of several states have reacted to public concern over the environment by passing strict regulations aimed at con- trolling the subsidence effect s of underground mining. Agencies of the federal government charged with assistance to the mining industry, including the Department of Energy and the Bureau of Mines, have sponsored a number of instrumentation and field measurement projects aimed at the development of subsidence prediction models that can aid the mine operator's task of subsidence control. There are good empirical models developed in Europe for subsidence prediction, but they were made possible by a large body of mining-induced subsidence data collected there over a long period of time. No com- parable subsidence data base exists in the United States, and consequently empirical modeling of subsidence is not a realistic approach for our near term needs. Moreover, the geologic and topographic diversity of the several coal regions in the United States is expected to necessitate the development of several empirical models, each one expected to be relevant to its own region. Because of the time and costs that are likely to be involved in an empirical modeling approach, it is considered more expedient and cost effective to develop a general, mechanistic model for subsidence prediction purposes. In order to develop such a model, it is necessary to investigate and quantify the mechanics of the subsidence process from the mine level up to the ground surface. The series of projects discussed in this paper are designed to achieve this objective and include the following work: (1) the identification of geotechnical instrumentation that will pro- vide mine level overburden and surface subsidence data. (2) a field demonstration of selected instruments, and (3) documentation of case histories for complete subsidence mechanics, using the demonstrated and preferred instruments. An identification of feasible instrumentation and monitoring techniques was completed by Woodward-Clyde Consultants (WCC) in 1977 (O'Rourke and others). This paper discusses a demonstration of those instruments at a mine in Utah, and at two subsequent projects, currently underway at longwall mines in Colorado and West Virginia. 'he latter two projects when complete will provide documented case histories of subsidence mechanics. The process of optimizing subsidence instrumentation and monitoring techniques to the conditions encountered during installation and monitoring for these underground mines is shown to be an evolving one, and one which has had some notable successes to date. INITIAL DEMONSTRATION The initial design and demonstration of selected monitoring systems was carried out at the SUFCO No. 1 mine, near Salina, Utah. The instrumented panel was approximately 152 m wide. 640 m long. and was 290 m to 320 m deep. The mined height of coal. seam averaged 2.4 m. The mining method was room and pillar using continuous mining machines. This method allowed some monitoring of the supported condition during development, and eventually allowed monitoring of a caved system when both chain pillars and room pillars were extracted on retreat. The two instrument systems shown on Table 1 were selected from the earlier feasibility report for demonstration at SUFCO No. 1. Collectively, the two systems, one for a fully-supported mining method and the other for a fully-caved method, incorporate most of the instrumentation to be found within all five systems listed in the earlier feasibility report. The instrumentation includes surface, subsurface and mine monitoring installations. All of the SUFCO instruments selected to meet the specifications of the general instrument types listed on Table 1 were manually operated. That is, data from the installed system could only be obtained while a person was there to physically observe or operate the system readout. Automatic data recording equipment was available for some installations, but the objectives were to keep the systems as simple as possible for the demonstration project. A complete description of the surface, sub- surface and mine level instruments, and the demonstration project results are given in WCC (1982), and selected features are discussed in this paper.

Single stage autogenous grinding of run-of-mine ore was selected by Broken Hill South Ltd., parent Company of Cobar Mines Pty. Ltd. for the concentrator to treat 60,000 tons per four weekly period of copper and complex copper-lead-zinc sulphide ores from the C.S.A. Mine at Cobar, Australia. Ore is mined by mechanised horizontal cut-and-fill stoping and is prepared for grinding by crushing under- ground in a 60 in. x 48 in. jaw-crusher set at 5 in. closed side setting. The ore is reduced to 80% minus 76 microns in two parallel sections each of one 22 ft. dim. x 7 ft. long autogenous grinding mill, powered by a 1,250 H.P. motor, operating in closed circuit with a single stage 20 in. dim. cyclone. Broken Hill South's original concept of the concentrator required the maximum use of reliable instrumentation, centralised control, and the minimum of manning. To achieve this objective the control room, housing the process recorders, alarms, closed circuit television monitors and all the control equipment, overlooks the grinding and flotation sections, and the whole plant is serviced by a public address system. The grinding units and associated equipment are located in the open and are serviced with the aid of a mobile crane and a mobile hydraulically-operated liner lifting device.

EVEN though the world has not been crying for more copper for the last three or four years there has been some important mill and smelter construction. Discovery and development of large new high-grade copper deposits in Africa has led to the construction of extensive reduction facilities there, prominent among which is the concentrator and smelter of the Rhokana Corporation at N'Kana. Northern Rhodesia. The 3000-ton concentrator adjoins the central shaft. A little over half a mile to the southeast, at an altitude of 40,010 ft., is the smelter, designed on the site by 1. H. Wynne. It is arranged primarily to treat N'Kana copper concentrates, but can also handle concentrates and direct-smelting ore from outside sources. Excavations were started late in 1930; concrete was first poured on Jan. 6. 1931; and the first blister cop¬per was cast on March 1.9, 1932, less than fifteen months later. During this period, which included several months of heavy tropical rains, some 10,000 cu. yd. of concrete was poured and 41000 tons of structural steel erected under the supervision of construction engineer, A. Ek, with a labor force of 60 to 30 Europeans and about 300 natives. The steelwork was fabricated by Head Wrightson & Co. in England, and the boiler plant equipment furnished and erected by the International Combustion Co. Ltd.

The following note describing the behavior of copper under rather unusual conditions is offered for its suggestiveness rather than as a complete study of the question. The examinations described were made because of a request for information concerning the embrittlement of copper when heated in a molten salt bath (sodium chloride) for the purpose of cleaning, as well as softening it. It is well known that metals may be rendered very brittle by electrolytic action in aqueous solutions, in all probability by the action of nascent hydrogen, and it was suspected that perhaps the embrittlement of the copper by means of the molten salt was produced in a somewhat similar manner. It was found that the copper was in contact with iron (or steel) while immersed in the molten salt, through the occasional use of an iron stirring rod, iron forceps for handling the pieces, and an iron pot for containing the fused salt. In the electrochemical potential series iron and copper stand some distance apart, copper being electronegative to the iron. Assuming that the two metals bear 2 similar relation to each other, when immersed in a bath of molten salt, as they do in an aqueous solution, they would be expected to form a galvanic couple, the copper being the cathode. By this means the copper might be embrittled, as often happens in aqueous solutions, by the action of the liberated hydrogen. In this case, however, the embrittlement must be attributed to some other agent than hydrogen. TO demonstrate how copper may be embrittled under these conditions, two small rods, one of copper and the other of mild steel, approximately 3/8 in. (9.5 mm.) in diameter, were immersed in a bath of sodium chloride that had been heated somewhat above its fusion point (melting point of sodium chloride is 801" C.) and an electromotive force of approximately 6 volts from a storage battery was impressed upon the system. The copper was made the cathode and the action was continued for several minutes. When removed from the bath, cooled, and tested for brittleness by bending the specimen back and forth, while clamped firmly at one end in a vise, the copper rod was found to be very brittle, as compared with a rod of the same length of the untreated copper tested
