One of the more challenging aspects of the unfolding age of space travel centers about the opportunity for man to use the natural resources of other worlds. The first of the extraterrestrial worlds to be exploited will be the moon. After only a scant few thousand years of scratching the earth's crust, man will embark upon a venture that for centuries has excited the imagination of many (while staggering that of most) and may become a reality within the next decade. There has never been a time when so much money and effort will have been expended to exploit an area about which so little is known. Paradoxically, this effort combines much of the detached objectivity so typical of our analytical time with the proverbial optimism of the indefatigable prospector. As the earliest manned lunar missions will be brief and exploratory in nature, astronauts will not be expected to attempt to exploit any of the possible lunar natural resources. In later missions, with a more extended period of time available for the astronauts to stay on the moon, it may be desirable or even necessary to "live off the land". The resulting exploitation of lunar resources will be intended primarily to reduce the dependence of manned missions upon terrestrial logistic support and to reduce the cost of maintaining lunar bases.

At the AIME meeting in Tampa in Oct. 1966, an empirically developed equation was presented which allowed the calculation of free settling velocity for any sized particle: 1 [ ] This equation requires the use of two parameters a and p which are coefficients derived from boundary layer theory.2 It was possible to develop values of a and p for several minerals by back calculation of published data. The original equation had one major flaw. When the fluid density exceeds the density of the solids, the solution to the equation becomes imaginary. A flaw was indicated also by the fact that galena and sylvite both having cubic cleavage, did not have similar values for a and b. Galena gave calculated values of a = 1.082 and g = 3.11, while sylvite gave values of a = 1.870 and p = 2.56. These flaws prompted further study of the equation, resulting in the following empirical modification: [ ] It is obvious a real solution of the equation is possible for all values of ps and p. When PL > PS, V is negative, indicating that the particles will rise against the attraction of gravity. The validity of the modification is borne out by the fact that when values of a and p were back calculated for galena and sylvite using the modified equation, both minerals gave values of a = 1.038 and p = 3.01. EFFORT to develop fundamental quantitative information and improved technique in the production of petroleum has long been faced with difficulties of a particularly evasive nature, owing to a combination of circumstances. In the first place, petroleum comes from far below the ground, out of sight, so that information derived from indirect observations must be extrapolated to reservoir conditions. If one does not force the analogy too far, the petroleum engineer may be said to be somewhat in the position of the astronomer. The actual phenomena which he wishes to observe in detail appear at a place so deep in the earth?s crust that personal observations and direct experiments are impossible.

The only way in which the difficult problems of classification of coal for the manufacture of by-product coke can be solved is to analyze them by the use of scientific data. It is very easy to adopt classifications for coal for the manufacture of by-product coke along certain lines; we can easily say that for a certain class of metallurgical operation coke made from bituminous coal must not contain more than so much sulfur or more than so much ash and should yield certain returns in the by-products, tar, ammonia, benzol, gas, etc. Those points we are fairly clear on and I think it is hardly worth while to discuss them because I presume that they are familiar to most of us who have any occasion either to make coke or to use it. But there is a field in the manufacture of coke which we know very little about. For example, we are operating a plant on a certain mixture of coal. Suddenly our blast-furnace man or the user of the coke tells us the coke is not as good as it was before. The coke is analyzed and the coal is analyzed. Everything seems to be about the same as it was— the ash is the same, there is no more sulfur, and so on—but the coke, for the use to which it is put, particularly in the blast furnace, is wrong. What happens? The management decide to try a slightly different coal mixture. They do not necessarily raise the total hydrocarbons, the volatile matter in the mixture, nor change the sulfur or the ash, but they do make a change which improves the value of the coke for metallurgical use. The reason for this difficulty, as I see it, is the " combustibility " of the coke—I hesitate to use the word, but it is the best one I have available. Combustibility of Coke We know now that the combustibility of coke is a very vital point in many metallurgical processes and I think one of the most notable instances of the proof of this is the experience of the Carnegie Steel Co. in the production of coke at its Clairton plant. The authors present a general outline of the theory and development of heavy-liquid application to mineral processing. Patent literature and processes are reviewed with special emphasis on liquid recovery systems which have been employed or proposed. Advantages and disadvantages of the process are discussed together with the recent developments which have revived interest in this old concentration method. The most important single factor in this resurgence of interest is concluded to be the narrowing gulf between chemical engineering and mineral dressing which has opened the field for new concepts of mineral plant design. A partial summary of patents on heavy liquid separations is included. In spite of the fact that heavy-liquid separation with organic liquids has been used in the laboratory for over 50 years, this process has never graduated to large scale commercial use for any extended period. However, a variation of this process, the sink-float or heavy-media separation process has found wide acceptance and is used to separate minerals from diamonds to gravel. Materials used to increase the specific gravity of the pulps used as heavy media include sand, clay, barite, magnetite, galena, hematite, atomized lead and ferrosilicon. Because of the greater ease of recovery, the magnetic materials, magnetite and ferrosilicon, are the preferred media today. In the U. S. alone, heavy-media iron ore plants with a capacity of over 10 million tons of concentrate per year are in existence. Heavy-media separation involving use of solid, inorganic particles suspended in water rapidly found a wide range of commercial use with the introduction of magnetic media. The minerals engineer is experienced in working with suspensions and quickly learned to develop and control such media at a cost compatible to the type of separation desired. The natural superiority of a heavy liquid with uniform chemical and physical properties has never been questioned since its first use in laboratory mineral separatory procedures. It offers the only method for gravity separation of fine particles of relatively close specific gravity. The most important early attempt to make heavy liquid separations commercial were made by the DuPont Co. which began experimental work on Virginia limonite in 1904. The appended "Partial Summary of Patents" compiled by W.L. O'Connell of The Dow Chemical Co. demonstrates the quantity and sequence of this work. Both inorganic and organic parting liquids were investigated and numerous patents were issued on the use and recovery of these liquids. The work culminated in the heavy liquid plant of the Weston Coal Co. at Shenandoah, Pa. Chemical engineering design of this plant was the responsibility of Francis I. and Hubert I. DuPont. Heavy-liquid separation of coal almost achieved commercial status at this plant which actually processed over 20,000 tons of coal. The liquids used were tetrabromethane, pentachloroethane and trichlo-roethylene, with liquid losses ranging from 8.9 to 12.4 oz per ton of cleaned coal. The reasons for failure of this plant are not clear but probably involved toxicity problems as well as other problems in chemical engineering. Excellent economics were reported. A more recent pilot plant was built in 1954-55 by Norris Goodwin for the Inerto Co. to treat hectorite clay. This plant employed carbon tetrachloride in jigs with liquid recovery by evaporation. Although good separation was achieved, incomplete removal of the CCl, from the clay prevented commercial operation. The only present operations known to the authors employing heavy liquids for gravity separations are limited to the use of calcium chloride in certain coal washers and bromochloromethane in a small batch operation (one ton solids per day) for the separation of beryllium metal particles from slag materials. This is not strictly a minerals beneficiation problem but it has demonstrated the feasibility of such separations. In many areas where carbonate rocks form important parts of the stratigraphic sequence, stratigraphers have experienced varying degrees of difficulty in differentiating and correlating limestone and dolomite units in both surface and subsurface work. With early Paleozoic rocks of the Mid-Continent, insoluble residues yield a remarkable amount of strati-graphic data and relatively good correlations may be carried over broad distances.' Unfortunately, neither such information nor electric logs and radioactive logs have been particularly helpful in interpreting the limestone sections of the Permian Basin of West Texas. This is because: (1) the variations in the sections may be very slight; (2) no completely satisfactory method of interpretation has been developed; and (3) the measurements themselves are not sensitive enough for small variations. Also, such logs are influenced by the fluid content. Paleontology and micro-paleontology remain the ultimate arbiters. As a routine tool, however, paleontol-ogical examination is slow and tedious. Chemical analysis may be used, but this, too, is extremely slow. Although rocks are not classified according to chemical composition, there is considerable variation with rock types. Correlation by chemical composition has two advantages, first, the characteristics determined are subject to minimum human error and interpretation, and secondly, the lithologic changes are not masked by fluid content as in the case of electric and radioactive logs. Some fossils concentrate certain elements which tentatively might be used to date rock units.' Rapid chemical analysis by spec-trographic means could be used as an adjunct to other means employed in correlation work, or might, in itself, present a suitable method. PURPOSE OF THIS INVESTIGATION Sloss and Cooke' have published data concerning spectrographic analysis of limestone rocks specifically for purposes of direct correlation of a single formation. These authors found satisfactory evidence that differences in percentage of four elements (Mg, Fe, Al, and Sr) in the Mississippian limestones of northern Montana were useful in carrying out correlation of this formation over a distance of approximately 50 miles. It was concluded from the preliminary work that the spectrochemical method offered possibilities of solution of some problems of correlation heretofore not possible. Since the work of Sloss and Cooke' was confined to one particular limestone zone, extension of the use of the method to examine two or more geologic formations would aid materially in the over-all problem of correlation of such rocks. Equipment is now available commercially with which very rapid spectrographic analyses may be made, and hence the problem was to determine whether the variations existing in the minor constituents of limestones were sufficient for use in possible correlation. Qualitative and semi-quantitative investigations were made to determine whether significant changes in the chemical condition occurred. It was a further purpose to investigate the geologic time-boundaries to see whether significant chemical variation could be found corresponding to the paleontological breaks. It was desirable to attempt correlation of a thick section of limestone or dolomite rock and to have as much information as possible on the section. Furthermore, it was felt that examination of formations more difficult to correlate by other means would enhance the value of the method should definite points of correlation be found. Samples were chosen from the Chapman-McFarlin Cogdell No. 25 well in the Cogdell field, Kent County, Tex., and from the General Crude Oil Co., Coleman No. 193-2 well in the Salt Creek field, Kent County, Tex. These fields belong to the famous series of "Canyon" reef fields of West Texas. Cores from the above wells were available from the United States Geological Survey, Austin, Tex. THE SPECTROGRAPHIC METHOD The choice of procedure to be followed in this investigation was based on the anticipated requirements peculiar to the problem. Since the problem was primarily to investigate the possibilities of applying the spec-trograph to problems of correlation in thick carbonate sections, a precise quantitative analysis did not appear necessary. A qualitative analysis to show the possible absence of presence of any element, or a semi-quantitative analysis of the elements present to show the relative changes in magnitude of selected elements was required. Both types of analysis were employed. The two most widely applied methods of semi-quantitative estimates are those of Harvey and of Slavin4,5 though various other procedures have been described.6 while the Harvey method has been modified by Addink,7 this refinement did not seem necessary to the present problem. Essentially, the procedure employed is a variation of the total energy method of Slavin with two exceptions: (1) stressing matrix effect, and (2) using densitometer measurements. Wrought chromium-base alloys containing yttrium, cubic monocarbides of the Ti(Zr)C type, and similay alloys containing manganese and rhenium have been melted and fabricated. Strength has been studied by hot hardness and elevated-temperature tensile and rupture measurements, low-temperature ductility by tensile testing, and surface stability by oxidation testing. In additiod, studies have been conducted of the carbide stability, and of aging behavior. The carbide dispersion generates effective elevated-temperature strength, which is further enhanced hv strain-induced precipitation. The dispersion exhibits classical dissolution and aging response. The ductile-to-brittle transition temperature of these alloys is above room temperature. The alloys reported show fairly good oxidation resistance, but nitrogen contamination can cause fortnation of a hard Cr2N layer under the oxide scale. Manganese does not appear to be a promising alloying element in chromium. In the years 1945 to 1950, the metal chromium was considered as a possible base for alloy systems due to its considerably higher melting point than superalloys, its low density, its high thermal conductivity, and its apparent capacity for strengthening. However, this interest in chromium was short-lived. It was found difficult to melt and cast, to be exceptionally sensitive to the effect of minor imperfections, to have a lack of ductility at both room and elevated temperatures, and to be subject to a deleterious effect of alloying elements upon the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature.' Since then, chromium, as a practical alloy base, has remained virtually unstudied. Further, purposeful ignoring of chromium has been promoted by statements that its bcc structure would not allow it to be strengthened to useful values, when compared to the "austenitic" alloys.2 Recently, a new look has been taken at chromium-base alloy systems. Study of the literature will show that chromium, providing some of its disadvantages could be eliminated or minimized, actually has a rather attractive potential as an alloy-system base. Analysis of rather scattered data suggests that chromium is quite capable of being strengthened to high levels. Also, significant strengthening of its two sister elements in Group VI-A, molybdenum and tungsten, has been demonstrated in a number of commercial and exploratory alloys. Chromium should be similar. Since chromium does not readily form a volatile oxide like tungsten or molybdenum, it offers a much higher probability of giving birth to alloy systems with useful oxidation resistance. Concerns about possible high elemental vapor pressure have been mitigated by recent data.3 In addition, the physical properties exhibited by chromium are attractive for application as a high-temperature structural material. For instance, its thermal conductivity varies from 49 to 36 Btu-ft/hr-sq ft-°F over its range of usefulness (which is two to four times higher than most superalloys), its density is about 7.2 g per cc (20 pct less than most nickel-base alloys), its coefficient of thermal expansion varies from 4 to 8 x 10-6 per OF, and it has a relatively high modulus of elasticity, approximately 42 x 10' psi.4 Alloying studies on a chromium base in the past have usually encompassed rather sweeping solid-solution alloy additions for strengthening. This is not consistent with contemporary alloying practice in Group VI-A. For instance, molybdenum, also in Group VI-A, is primarily alloyed for strength improvement by use of heat-treatable carbide dispersions.5 Chromium and molybdenum are similar in their chemical activity and other properties. Thus, strengthening of chromium by carbide dispersions was studied. Chromium-base alloys are plagued with room-temperature brittleness, although high-purity unal-loyed chromium can be made ductile.4,8 Use of yttrium as a scavenger has done much to improve ductility and resistance to nitrogen embrittlement in chromium systems,7 so it was utilized in this program. It has also recently been found8 that small rhenium additions (1 to 5 pct) create improvement in the ductility of Type 218 tungsten wire. This is apparently related to the remarkable effect of rhenium additions near its terminal solid solubility in all Group VI-A metals.9'10 Investigation to establish if dilute concentrations of rhenium would also be effective in chromium appeared to be logical for this program. Since rhenium is too expensive to be practical in alloys for application as structural components, ductility improvements through solid-solution alloying were also sought by substitution of manganese for rhenium; manganese, like rhenium, exists in Group VII of the periodic system. The optimum amount of carbide dispersion for chromium-base alloys was obtained by analogy with molybdenum. Strengthening in molybdenum is achieved by use of Ti-Zr carbide dispersions. A

(Wilkes-Barre Meeting, June, 1911.) My connection, under a commission from the Councils and Board of School Control of the city of Scranton, Pa., with a recent investigation of mine-caves and the resultant damages to surface-improvements, has led to the preparation, at the invitation of our Secretary, of the present paper. It is notorious that there are, in the anthracite-fields, frequent subsidences of the surface, due to the removal of the coal beneath. No particular attention is paid to such occurrences, unless they happen to injure surface-improvements. Many caves have happened in Scranton and its vicinity, which have excited but little remark, since they have generally caused no serious damage. In August, 1909, a cave occurred in the Hyde Park section of the city, generally known as the West Side, which nearly destroyed school-house No. 16 and considerable adjacent property. 'Fortunately, there were no pupils in the building at the time; but the thought of the possible result, bad the usual number of pupils and teachers been present, aroused the public to the gravity of the situation; and the School Board employed engineers to investigate the case. Two reports were made by separate sets of engineers, which differed in some particulars. These differences were pointed out in the public press and magnified, and the consequent agitation of the subject was taken tip and greatly exaggerated by some of the metropolitan newspapers, giving to uninformed people the very erroneous impression that the whole city of Scranton was in danger of sinking into the bowels of the earth. All this tended to affect the credit of the city and to depress real-estate values. The matter was considered at a joint meeting of the Board of Trade, the Councils, and the School Board. The Hon. J. If the reader finds that the basic information in a commodity chapter is insufficient, he can consult the appropriate sources in this chapter to find more detailed or more up-to-date information. In these days, technology develops so rapidly that this 5th edition will be somewhat out of date even by the time it is distributed. A comparison of this edition with the 4th edition (1975) of Industrial Minerals and Rocks will clearly demonstate how rapidly the scene changes. One of the best sources of new information, of course, is attendance at technical meetings. For example, the papers presented at the national and sectional meetings of AIME usually discuss new developments in the respective divisions of the society. Frequently this information is available in Preprints. In addition some are printed in Mining Engineering and/or the Transactions of the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME. Furthermore, other professional and trade journals contain articles pertinent to the field. A journal introduced in 1967, Industrial Minerals, published by the Metal Bulletin, Ltd., London, is an excellent source of information. The Mining Journal, Ltd., also in London, publishes a weekly journal, a Mining Magazine (monthly), and a Mining Annual Review. The latter covers the field from three aspects: (1) by commodities, (2) through technical developments, and (3) geographically. The Industrial Minerals Directory 1977, 1st ed., Metal Bulletin Books, Ltd., London, provides addresses of organizations in the field. Other useful magazines and periodicals include Engineering and Mining Journal, Pit and Quarry, Rock Products, and World Mining, all published in the United States. In addition many new books related to industrial minerals have been published since the 4th edition of Industrial Minerals and Rocks. Most of these are included in the bibliography of each chapter in this volume. Another excellent information source is the proceedings of the Forum on Geology of Industrial Minerals. This group, which held its 18th annual meeting in 1982, is sponsored by a state geological survey or another mineral agency on a rotational basis. The proceedings have been published by the various sponsors and are available as indicated in Table 1. Two major sources of basic industrial mineral and rock data in the United States, and also a good source for many foreign countries, are the US Geological Survey and the US Bureau of Mines. The two agencies publish many reports and maps on a variety of geological and mining subjects. In addition, each agency has an indexed list of all their publications with a free service announcing new publications: New Publications of the Geological Survey, US Geological Survey, 329 National Center, Reston, VA 22092 and New Publications-Bureau of Mines, Publications Distribution Branch, US Bureau of Mines, 4800 Forbes Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15213. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) publishes annually Minerals Yearbooks which provide statistical data on mineral products including production, consumption, imports and exports, as well as information on new developments. Another very useful USBM series is called Mineral Facts and Problems. Editions were published in 1960, 1965, 1970, and 1975. Four major series of publications by the Bureau are Information Circulars, Reports of Investigations, Mineral Trade Notes, and Minerals and Materials. The last two are particularly good for news of foreign developments. The Bureau of Mines Employee Directory, available at all USBM offices, lists addresses and telephone numbers for all offices as well as same for all commodity and area specialists.

D. K. Deardorff and Haruo Kato (U. S. Bureau of Mines)—We wish to refute the 1875" 20°C value that Giessen, et al., report as the transformation temperature of hafnium. Although these authors state that their work along this line will be reported later, we can't leave their value undiscussed, for we believe it to be 125°C too high. Our value of 1750° 20°C, which the authors mention, has been substantiated in our laboratories by the use of three other methods. The first method of substantiation was by heating and cooling curves using a hafnium/tungsten thermocouple, the couple having first been calibrated against a t/Pt-10 pct Rh couple. The second method was by quenching and metallography of dilute Hf-Ta alloys. The third cussion, it may be pointed out that the observations of Rogers referred to large unidirectional strains where the internal cracks or voids appeared only after a strain of 32 pct or more. On the contrary the internal fissures observed, as a result of fatigue cycling, occurred for a total extension of some 5 pct and furthermore followed the directions of the slip zones. Finally, it is not our contention, as implied in Dr. Alden's last paragraph, that the tensile stress is an important factor in crack propagation. Indeed, in connection with the reference to the companion report, special note is made of the fact that "Deformation was apparently concentrated in grains which have a slip plane nearly perpendicular to the specimen axis and thus near the plane of maximum applied shear." This dependence of the growth of fissures on the orientation of the slip planes with respect to the direction of maximum applied shear is clearly shown in work on the torsional cycling of single crystals which has been submitted for publication. method was by heating and cooling curves with W/W-26 pct Re thermocouple. Counting the original resistometric method, four different methods have yielded 1750" 20°C as the transformation temperature of hafnium. All our work on determination of the hafnium transformation temperature has shown that the specimen under test must be quickly heated to and through the transformation temperature if the lowest possible transformation value is to be determined; otherwise a higher value not representative of pure hafnium will result. Speed was emphasized in all methods. In our resistometric work the corresponding voltage, amperage, and temperature readings were taken quickly and the transformation temperature was usually reached within 5 min total heating time. In the thermal analysis work involving Hf/W or W/W-26 pct Re thermocouples the transformation temperature was attained within three minutes total heating time, this time being less because the two variables were

Wilkes-Barre Meeting, Julie, runs., THE ore-hearth was the earliest type of furnace used in smelting Mississippi Valley lead-ores, which are very pure, and low in silver-content. The first smelters made no attempts to recover lead from the smoke; and since about 15 per cent. of the lead -in the charge escaped in this manner, early practice with the hearth was decidedly wasteful. At most of the large smelting-plants blast-furnaces with auxiliary roasters were substituted for the hearths long ago. But, upon the introduction of the Lewis and Bartlett bag-process for collecting fume, the ore-hearth was used by companies engaged in the manufacture -of pigments, simply on account of the large percentage of fume made by it. In fact, the extraction of lead was kept down by the use of hot blast and other devices. During recent years, however, several smelting companies have realized that the preliminary roasting of galena for the blast-furnace is not economical, and have, therefore, replaced the roasting-furnace with a modification. of the old Scotch hearth, in which a large percentage of the lead in a charge is recovered directly as pig-lead, while the remainder passes partly into fume and partly into slag low enough in sulphur to be charged into the blast-furnace without further treatment. The results obtained have proved so satisfactory, both As to recovery and operating-expense, that one eminent metallurgist has predicted the universal use of the ore-hearth on non-argentiferous ores. The-ore-hearth, thus employed as an adjunct to a blast-furnace plant, is rather a desulphurizer than a smelting-furnace proper,-the chief object being to make a blue slag suitable for the cupola-furnace. THE phosphate-rock industry is built upon natural deposits of rocks and minerals in which the element phosphorus is present as a phoshate. The term ?phosphate rock? is a general one, applied to certain rocks of different degrees of consolidation and of diverese origin, charater and occurrence, composed of intimate mixtures of several phosphate minerals, largely submicrocrystalline, usually calcium phosphates, in commerical quantities, with various impurities. This term includes phosphatized limestones, sandstone, shales, and igneous rocks; nodular phosphates ; residual weathered phosphatic limestones ; vein phosphates ; and phosphatic sediments, both consolidated and unconsolidated.

The following experiments and researches were originally conducted by Dr. Heinrich Rcessler, chief of the German Gold and Silver Parting Establishment at Frankfort-on-the-Main, for the sole purpose of abating the nuisance created by the discharge into the air of the sulphurous and sulphuric acids generated in the process of parting bullion by sulphuric acid. The results achieved have, however, an important bearing not only on this process, but are of value in the manufacture of sulphuric acid and sulphate of copper from sulphurous gases derived from any source. It has now been in successful operation for a term of years at Dr. Roessler's own works, and has been lately introduced with satisfactory results at the royal mints of Kremnitz and Munich, and the well-known establishment of Johnson Mathey & Co., of London.

DURING the past year the iron and steel industry of the world as a whole operated on a satisfactory basis. No discoveries nor new processes of outstanding importance were announced either here or abroad, although rumors of such were persistent. In general, the efforts of operating and research men in the iron and steel industry seemed to be confined to improving quality and reducing cost, not a new aim, for the same efforts have been noted in nearly all of the annual reviews of the industry for at least fifty years. Most published papers on blast furnace or steel-making practice were of minor importance, at least when judged by the criterion of radical change in process or product. If the number of reports in the technical journals, or articles in the trade press, is used as a basis for comparison, continuous-mill sheet is still the most important single product of the industry; papers were published detailing the results of the investigation of various phases of the

During the past three years, USBM has developed an apparatus and technique for direct measurement of existing pressure and change of pressure in mine rock. This relatively simple and inexpensive monitor is reliable for months after being installed. It is used to determine shift of ground pressure created by different sequences of mining, to ascertain the cause of rock failures, and to evaluate the need for artificial support. The technique has been employed to measure pressures in limestone, greywacke, concrete, diabase, and soft iron ore. When rock is subjected to a load it is deformed. Ordinarily this is observed in a mine as the displacement of one point with respect to another—the deflection of the roof, which may be observed as a convergence between roof and floor; or the extrusion of material from the rib, which may be observed as a decrease of the distance between the rib and the post of a timber set. The effect of excessive pressure may be a rockburst if the rock is strong, or it may be squeezing ground if the rock is soft. Some desirable effects of high stress (high in relation to strength) are the caving of roof in a longwall mining operation, the caving of ore in block caving, and the decrease in mechanical energy required to break down the mineral seam in a retreating pillar-robbing operation. In any case, whether the observable effect of rock load is desirable or undesirable, it is a displacement, and depends on the following four factors: 1) The structure—the size and shape of openings, pillars, and linings, the geologic bedding and jointing. 2) The mechanical properties of the rock—prin-cipally the strength, modulus of elasticity, and flow characteristics. 3) The load or applied stress—primary sources are the weight of superincumbent rock, which increases with depth, and unrelieved tectonic stresses; secondary sources are redistributed pressures caused by other nearby openings, especially large mined out zones (rock pressure depends partly on the rock structure created by mining). 4) Duration of load, related to the length of time the opening is exposed. CONTROL OF ROCK DISPLACEMENT Rock displacement can be controlled by control of these four factors. Consider now the means of exercising such control over these factors. Control of the structural features is obviously possible to a great extent, as such control is exercised largely by choosing the method of mining and the methods of natural and artificial support. Rock properties vary, even within a particular mine, but they are controllable only in the limited sense that control may be exercised by choosing the beds or zones to be mined so that rocks with undesirable properties will not occupy critical positions within the rock structure created by mining. Rock pressure is the most complex of the four factors through which ground control can be achieved because it is invisible, difficult to measure, and poorly understood. Rock pressure is controllable only to the extent that control is exercised on the rock structure created by mining. Considering openings within a particular mine, time of exposure varies, and is readily controllable because it is easily measured and easily understood — the longer an opening stands, the greater the likelihood of failure or excessive convergence. Control is exercised by choice of an appropriate sequence of driving openings of different classes, such as haul-ageways and rooms, which are required to remain well supported for different lengths of time under different conditions. Again, control is exercised through the method of mining. All controllable factors can be controlled by proper design of the mining method. The orientation and relative positions of the mine workings and the sequence of their excavation are likely to be much more important to ground control than is the design of artificial support. This implies that the major decisions in regard to ground control are made, knowingly or not, at the time the mining method is chosen. WHY MEASURE ROCK PRESSURE In addition to restrictions on the several factors, control implies the measurement of these factors in some sense, whether only qualitatively by visual observation, or by actual quantitative determination with a measuring instrument. IN JUNE 1921, the Sullivan &lining Co., owned jointly by the Bunker Hill and Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co. and the Hecla Mining Co, started work on the development of the Star Mine. The development work contemplated called for a crosscut from the Hecla workings on the 2000 level to the Star ledge. The length of crosscut necessary to encounter the Star ledge was approximately 8900 ft. from the Hecla shaft. By using workings formerly made by the Hecla Mining Co., only about 8100 ft. of actual crosscutting was necessary. This crosscut has a direction of S 20° W and would have a tendency to crosscut any ledges in the intervening ground.

THE problem, of the crippled soldier in industry is not a problem of war work only; it is a problem of industrial development. As individuals, each one of you is seeking to provide our maimed heroes with such teaching as will render them, in the shortest possible amount of time, productive and satisfied members of the community. As individuals you are interested in the organizations that are preparing to receive these men, to train them and to place them at that work for which they are best fitted. As an organization, it is now your duty to take up the industrial end of the problem, to investigate existing conditions in the industries, to discover where the opportunities for employment lie, and so readjust industrial practice that the cripples may be utilized to their own and the community's good with the least shock to themselves or to the industries, and with the greatest amount of permanent benefit to all concerned. We have divided industrial opportunities suitable for cripples roughly, into three classes. First, such as already exist in the industries, which can be set aside for cripples only, present occupants being transferred to other work for which they can be fitted but which is not suitable for cripple work; second, opportunities in the industrial world that, through changes in the working equipment or tools, or through appliances attached to the cripple himself, can make the cripple a competitor of the sound worker; third, opportunities not existing at present in the industries, but which could be introduced for the good of the community, without placing the cripples into competition with any existing class of workers.

HIGH-GRADE manganese ore, from which manganese is obtained commercially, is not found in large quantities in any major steel-producing nation in the free world. The U. S. is a "have not" nation with respect to deposits of directly mineable high-grade manganese ore. Known resources of 48 pct Mn or better grade ore amount to less than 200,000 tons. In 1950 the U. S. steel industry consumed 1.8 million short tons of metallurgical grade manganese ore that contained about 800,000 tons of manganese. About 16 pct of the manganese content was lost in processing, so that about 650,000 tons, or 13 pounds per ton of steel actually entered into steel production. Under present practices use expands directly with steel output, and by 1975 the demand in both the U. S. and the rest of the free world is expected to be roughly 60 pet greater than in 1950. In peacetime about 80 pet of manganese consumption goes into steel production; high-manganese steel, dry cells, and chemicals account for the remainder. The manganese supply problem centers around high-grade ore for ferromanganese production. Use of ores containing less than 35 pet Mn sharply increase the costs of making ferromanganese. Use of ferro-manganese of grade below 70 pet in turn requires changes in steelmaking that increase steel cost. Under normal conditions the present small domestic production cannot be expected to increase. Major resources in the U. S. consist of 12 low-grade deposits. The cost of mining and treating these ores to extract a product as good as that yielded by imported ores is at least twice and in some cases more than four times the 1951 price of foreign ores delivered to the U. S. However, as long as trade relations and overseas shipping are not interrupted, deposits in India, Africa, and Brazil can meet steadily increasing demand at approximately present costs. Cost considerations indicate that the U. S. should continue to rely upon overseas sources for its peace-time supply, and that this situation is satisfactory. But, this does not take into account the question of how the U. S. will be able to meet its needs in war. Position of the Rest of the Free World In 1950, free world steel producers outside the United States, with a steel output of 70 million ingot tons, consumed about 1.3 million tons of metallurgical-grade ore. Their manganese ore demand, expected to increase directly with steel production, will by 1975 be about 2.3 million tons. Russia possesses over half the known manganese ore reserves of the world and is producing twice the tonnage of any other country. It supplied more than a third of the U. S. manganese requirements up to 1938 and again in 1948, but by 1950 Soviet manganese exports to the free world had virtually ceased. The free world's supply of manganese now comes mainly from India and Africa. Somewhat over 10 pet of U. S. imports came from Brazil and Cuba. Security Considerations In the event of war the U. S. might be substantially cut off from 90 pet of present sources. Reduction in manganese specifications might cut consumption by over 10 pet without seriously affecting steel quality. By elimination of losses in the production of ferromanganese savings as high as 10 pet might be possible. But, wartime manganese requirements cannot be met through conservation alone. To meet possible future emergencies the U. S. should continue its comprehensive security program for manganese, including stockpiling and research on the economic use of low-grade ore, domestic ores, the recovery of manganese from slag and the reduction of manganese requirements in steel production. If this work, including additional pilot plant operation is pursued vigorously, it should be possible in an emergency to get an adequate supply of manganese from domestic sources. The national stockpile then can be looked upon as a source of supply during the period of at least 2 years required to reach full-scale production from low-grade resources. Ferromanganese Smelting In comparison with smelting of pig iron, ferro-manganese smelting is a very wasteful process. Under present ferromanganese blast-furnace smelting practice, about 8 pet of the manganese in the furnace charge is lost to the slag, and roughly the same amount is lost to the stack gases; the total loss approaches 15 pct. Present practice is a compromise between excessive slag loss and excessive stack loss. In fact, it may be seriously questioned whether conventional blast furnace design is suitable for manganese smelting. U. S. Resources The known manganese deposits of the U. S. contain a total of 3500 million long tons of raw material and 75 million long tons of metallic manganese. More than 98 pct of this contained metal is in 12 large low-grade deposits of which the most important are those at Chamberlain, S. Dak; Cuyuna, Minn.; Aroostook County, Maine; and Artillery Peak, Ariz. Reserves of high-grade ore (48 pct Mn) amount to less than 200,000 tons. About 20 million tons of ore average over 15 pct Mn, and when grade is decreased to 10 pct Mn reserves amount to about 100 million long tons. If cut-off grade is decreased to 5 pet Mn, resources amount to 800 million long tons. Many of these low-grade ores may be beneficiated by flotation or other concentration methods. Pyrometallurgical Methods For smelting ferromanganese, it is essential to have an ore containing at least 50 pct manganese, with an Mn:Fe ratio of about 8:1. Direct smelting of 20 pct Mn concentrates is not promising. The only method that offers any promise involves two-step smelting.

A STURDY and consistent expansion of the metal industry occurred in 1947 exemplified by an increase of approximately 30 per cent in steel consumption over 1946. For this major reason, ferroalloy metals have seen their most useful and important peace-time year. The current domestic rate of consumption of high-grade ferroalloy ores, together with added consumption of new foreign producers as well as for eign nationals' restrictions on high-grade exports, makes very evident the increasing difficulties of obtaining sufficient high-grade ores. This accentuates the need for new and less expensive methods of production of ferro-alloy metals of higher purity from lower-grade domestic resources. As an important factor in preparedness, procurement of these high-grade, -critical ferroalloy minerals and metals for our nation's stock piles is a most important task. Also, this stock-piling can be the means of supplying incentive for the industrial development of the new metallurgical processes and plants necessary for the recovery of ferroalloy metals from our domestic low-grade deposits.

This paper presents an investigation of the accuracy of population balance model predictions for ball mill scale-up. Experiments performed in 25.4 x 29.2 cm (10 x 11.5) batch mill are used to estimate linear grinding rate parameters that, in turn are scaled according to specific power draft to predict performance in 381 x 292 mm (15 x 11.5 in.) and 762 x 457 mm (30 x 18 in.) batch and continuous ball mills, respectively. Results are presented for wet and dry grinding of two homogeneous solids, limestone (soft) and quartz (hard), and one heterogeneous solid, a complex molybdenite ore. In all cases good agreement between predicted and experimental product size distributions was obtained.
