The U. S. Navy Department has perfected plans for the enrollment and training of considerable numbers of engineering officers. A school for this purpose, the U. S. Navy Steam Engineering School, has been established by the Department at Hoboken, N. J. The school is open to men between the ages of 21 and 40 who meet the physical requirements of the Navy, who are of thorough ability and officer-like character and who have completed the mechanical or electrical engineering course at certain recognized technical schools, or who possess an education and experience adjudged to be an equivalent thereof. Enrollment in the U. Naval Reserve Force of men properly qualified may be made at any Naval enrolling office, notation being made of the applicant's qualifications and desire to be detailed to this school. Applicants will be enrolled as Chief Machinist Mates, and during the course of instruction will draw the pay of this rating, $83 per month, plus $60 per month paid as subsistence. Upon graduation, men will be commissioned as Ensigns in the U. S. Naval Reserve, with a salary of $1700 per year. The duty to which a graduate of this school will be assigned will be that of an engineer officer in the auxiliary service of the Navy. Special provision has been made for the continuance of the school with proper material by a Navy regulation which permits undergraduates of the Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior Classes in recognized engineering schools to enroll in the Naval Reserve Force with the rating of Seaman 2d Class, and continue their courses at the institutions where they have matriculated. Such men will be called into active service after their graduation, and can at that time, if they are qualified to pass an officers' physical examination, apply for admission to the U. S. Navy Steam Engineering School. Men who are registered in the draft, either graduates or undergraduates, may enroll with the proper enrolling officer by securing from their draft board a letter of release, which in all probability can be obtained for this purpose. The aim of this school is not simply to produce engineers, but to produce naval engineering officers in the true sense of the word. The course of instruction covers a period of five months, arranged in four periods.

INTRODUCTION The Philippines is endowed with mineral resources, much of which still remains unexploited. The country's known reserves, at least for the major mineral commodities, have increased every decade since the first major discoveries more than 80 years ago. Mining, therefore, naturally evolved as one of the pioneer industries and has ever since been a major factor in economic development. The Philippines has entered a new era in mineral resources development and management. One significant feature of this era is the degree to which the government is involved with the industry. In recent years, the state has increasingly encouraged the private sector to carry out detailed exploration aided by governmental contributions through extensive geological and geophysical surveys, fundamental researches and even indirect financial assistance in some specific areas. Significant changes in mineral resources development policies were brought about with the promulgation of Presidential Decree 463 or the Mineral Resources Development Decree of 1974. The Decree provides for a more rational system of administration and disposition of mineral lands to promote mineral resource exploration and exploitation. Various forms of incentives are provided. Foreign entities are allowed to participate in development through service contracts with leaseholders or with the government in the case of reserved areas. The thrust in mineral resources development has been focused on the base metals which as envisioned would provide the foundation for sound economic development. In recent years, however, major strides have been made to promote the exploitation of the non-traditionally produced commodities especially the non-metals. Development likewise point to the growing determination of the government and the private sector to expand benefits from mining. This is evident in efforts to promote downstream processing operations and to encourage investments in exploration, exploitation and mineral processing ventures. The integrated mineral resources development plan, therefore, proposes the vertical integration of mining extraction activities with the processing requirements of the metal-based manufacturing industries. While mining activities shall continue to be carved out by the private sector, the government shall influence the industry's direction by establishing legitimate goals to maximize benefits through an integrated approach giving due consideration to environmental protection and resource needs of future generations. STATUS OF MINERAL RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT Extent of Exploration Application of modem exploration tools and concepts complemented by intense infusion of foreign technology and rapid development of indigenous expertise have enabled the government jointly with the private sector to geologically explore vast grounds and to expand the country's known mineral resources. Approximately 93% of the country's total land area of 30 million hectares have been geologically mapped on at least 1:250,000 scale. Of the 93% total coverage, roughly 37.54% or 11.07 million hectares have been done on scales of 1:10,000 to 1:50,000 as shown in Figure I. Only 3.07% of the total coverage have been surveyed in detail. Land gravity surveys have been undertaken on over 45% of the total, while some 77,300 line km. of aeromagnetic surveys have been flown over 110,000 sq. km. of land area. Processing of data is almost complete. Total magnetic intensity and IGRF-corrected maps are available. Geological interpretation utilizing Landsat MSS imagery and low altitude aerial photography augmented by ground truthing have been undertaken in several large areas with very encouraging results. Beach and offshore mineral surveys were initiated in 1977 and have covered substantial areas in northwest and southeast Luzon and northeastern Mindanao. Highly promising areas for detrital magnetite, chromite, gold and some heavy minerals including ilmenite and titanium have been identified. In the petroleum sector, two offshore oilfields are currently producing from Miocene limestone reefs in Northwestern Palawan. Another field from the same area will be on stream in mid-1982.

If we assume that testing of the model started at time t1, that time t2 was the instant at which the elastic limit of the material was passed at the points of the maximum stress, and that at time t3 the failure of the model was completed as shown in the typical photograph (Fig. I), then actually the photograph shows the final results of what took place between time t2 and t3. By the principle of similitude all conclusions drawn from the behavior of the model were applicable and valid for actual mine roofs up to the time t2 after time t2 motions and friction came into play during the destruction of the model. The events between t2 and t3 and the photograph itself are not representative of the events expected in an actual mine roof unless corrections imposed by the principle of similitude are made. It can therefore be stated that all conclusions and observations of the author from the photographs are applicable only to his small-scale experiments and not to actual mine roofs. Without investigation of the true stresses or the combined maximum stress induced in the beds it has been assumed by the author that failure occurred solely due to bending stress caused by loading of the beds. (The author states that D was taken to be the theoretical strain given by elementary beam theory.) Fig. 1 shows that the beds were clamped together. This clamping was necessary to prevent slipping of the beds due to the horizontal shear. However, this clamping caused an uncontrolled and undertermined com-pressive stress S at the end of the beds, and this com-pressive stress caused a true tensile stress ?S (? PoiS-son ratio). This true tensile stress combined with the tensile stress produced at the end of the beds due to loading (fixed beam uniformly loaded), and the horizontal shear which is maximum at the end appears to be the most probable maximum stress produced in the beds. It is therefore evident that the author in performing this experiment has introduced stresses in the model not existing or dissimilar to actual mine roofs, and therefore his conclusions may be applicable to his small-scale experiments but inapplicable to actual mine roofs. Louis A. Panek (author's reply)—The discusser's difficulty is related to mechanics of materials rather than similitude. The effect of time did not enter into the tests in any way, being simply excluded from consideration in this study, because all quantitative results entering into the design equations are based on measured (between time t1 and time t2) bending strains that are well below the breaking strain (i.e., in the elastic range) for the model material. Time does not become a significant factor until the rock stress reaches 80 to 90 pct of the breaking stress." The objective of this investigation was not to predict that bolted roof will fail after time t, but was instead to develop a safe roof, that is, roof in which the bending strain is much less than (say less than 50 pct of) the breaking strain. The models tested to failure had no direct bearing on the design equations. Although for some rocks time may influence the magnitude of stress or strain at which fracture occurs, breaking stress or breaking strain values were not employed for any purpose in this investigation. Tests to failure were made only to obtain additional evidence regarding the behavior of the bolted laminae' as evinced by the locations of the cracks. As stated in the last paragraph of the paper, if one wishes to predict the time or stress conditions for which the roof will fail, additional information is required. The reason for clamping the laminae is to make them behave liked clamped beams, which closely approximate the clamped-plate condition of the actual mine roof beds (Ref. 5, p. 1; Ref. 6). The writer has previously demonstrated that the bending stresses induced by centrifugal loading in a clamped model beam are in agreement with those predicted by theory;' hence clamping has no significant effect on the bending ,trains measured during a test. Moreover, actual ,in, roof beds are likewise subject to a clamping effect due to weight of superincumbent strata carried by the pillars or ribs on each side of the opening. It is emphasized that this study was restricted to evaluating only the reinforcing effect produced by the bolts. Procedures employed in the experiments and in the data analysis were such as to deliberately exclude the effects of other factors. The objections offered are therefore invalid,

IT is no longer necessary, if it ever was, for your annual lecturer to apologize for including in his remarks frequent references to the arrange-ment of metal atoms in crystals and for basing his arguments that metals behave as they do upon their crystal structure. Neither will any objec-tion be raised because the large metallic crystals of which we will speak are hard to prepare and of negligible commercial interest. The particular set of physical properties we propose to discuss-ferromagnetic proper-ties-may require more justification. Very few in this audience are primarily, or even remotely, interested in the ferromagnetic behavior of the metals they handle. By no means all of you ever deal, by choice or by necessity, with metals which display any ferromagnetism at all, and even those who study or control ferrous metallurgy must usually depend upon electrical engineers for assistance in ferromagnetic applications. My excuse for talking about such an obvious specialty is, like all Gaul, divided into three parts. In the first place, the members of the com-mittee who select the annual lecturer must wish the speaker to confine himself to matters he has at least thought about before he prepares his speech. In the second place, the study of ferromagnetism in crystals has, as you will soon realize, suffered in the not-too-distant past from inade-quate metallurgy. Further progress probably depends upon proper use being made of the skill and knowledge of some members of the Institute of Metals Division who have not, before today, been asked to think about the problems presented here. Finally, there is at least a sporting chance that the ferromagnetic properties of a few metal crystals will give some insight into the more generally interesting properties which they share with nonferromagnetic metal crystals.

THE increasing use of internal furnace-boilers for mining power-plants (doubtless due to the facility with which they may be installed by reason of their portability; the fact that they require no masonry setting, cast-iron fronts, buck-stays, etc., and practically no foundation; and the successful maintenance of their claim to equal and even superior economy, as compared with boilers of other types) warrants this description of a method of remedying an injury which may occur, to such a furnace, even though it satisfies the requirements of the formula adopted by the U. S. Board of Supervising Inspectors of Steam Vessels.2 I refer to the sagging and deformation which may result from overloading the boilers for a considerable period-say, several days. This is sometimes unavoidable under the exacting conditions of continuous day-and-night service, and (in spite of all rules and precautions, the occasional careless or unskillful work of attendants. Such a trouble is by no means unknown on shipboard, where this type of boiler is so largely employed. In the case here described, two Morrison suspension-furnaces, of half-inch steel, 14 ft. long and 45 in. in mean diameter, with ? dry-back ? boilers, were necessarily operated somewhat beyond their rated -normal capacity for several months, while a third similar unit was -in process of installation, and during this period, though the boilers were kept perfectly clean, heat seems 'to have been generated slightly faster than it was absorbed by, the water in the boilers. THE accompanying chart was devised to provide a rapid and simple method of correcting for temperature and compressibility (deviation from Boyle's law) of gas under relatively high pressures and temperatures, such as are encountered in many deep reservoirs. The chart was prepared by interpolating for the desired values in the experimental data of Burke and Keyes1 and Kvalnes and Gaddy2 on the compressibility of methane, after adjusting their results from 0°C. to 60°F. and combining the correction factors for compressibility and temperature into a single multiplier, which, applied to the product of pressure and reservoir volume, gives at once the volume at one atmosphere (14.7 lb. per sq. in. abs.) and 60°F. The relationship 0f this multiplier to the compressibility factor Z, as used in most discussions, is simply: [Multiplier = 460° + 60°ZT –] where Z is the compressibility factor and T the absolute temperature (Rankine). Fahrenheit temperatures are shown on the vertical axis and pressures in pounds per square inch absolute on the horizontal axis. Correction factors or multipliers at intervals of 0.05 from 0.55 to 1.40 have been plotted on the chart and are calculated t0 give volume of gas at one atmosphere pressure (14.7 lb.) and 60°F. The operation is as follows: The reservoir volume, times the number of atmospheres pressure, times the multiplier, gives the volume of gas measured at one atmosphere (14.7 lb. per sq. in.) and 60°F. For example, a reservoir is estimated to have a volume of 10,000,000 cu. ft., bottom-hole pressure is 2940 lb. per sq. in. and temperature is 184°F To make the correction for methane, follow the 184° line horizontally to the 2940-lb. pressure line. The intersection lies between the 0.85 and 0.90 correction lines, and by interpolation we may estimate the multiplier at 0.863. SEVEN years ago, Dr. S. L. Hoyt1 presented a masterful discussion of the hard metal carbides and cemented tungsten carbide. His lecture summarized most of the data then available in the field; many of the details relating to the production, properties and structure of cemented tungsten carbide had never been previously published, for, in fact, this information was only then being acquired. During the intervening years, the cemented carbides have assumed a place of real importance in the commercial field, with an ever widening variety of applications due to constant improvement in the control of production technique and the unremitting search for new compositions that might better the performance of the alloys in one or another type of service. The most recent summary of production methods, properties and guides for the successful application of the cemented carbides appears in the 1936 edition of the Metals Handbook. Of necessity, much detailed information relating to structures and physical properties is not included in such a summary, and it is with such details that the present discussion is concerned.

MINING the lead deposits of Southeast east Missouri has reached a high stage of technical development dictated by the scattered occurrences of low-grade ore through favorable horizons in the Bonne Terre formation. The rock-breaking, handling, and related practices described here have evolved as the best way of mining these particular deposits. These methods are applied in the production of about 19,000 tons of lead ore per operating day from four mines in Southeast Missouri. Development drilling Drifts 10 ft wide and either 8 or 9 ft high are driven in this district on contract. Miners are guaranteed standard wages plus a bonus on the footage advanced, if earned. Labor, fuse, caps, wire, and dynamite used are charged against the contract. Normally the cycle of operations in drifting is performed by a two-man crew, a motor operator and a shovel operator who first load out the rock broken by the preceding shift. The drift crew then sets up two vertical column and mounts the drills. Cleveland HC-10's are used which have a steel lug integral with the cylinder for connection with the air feed. All drilling in drifts is wet. Air pressure is 85 to 100 lb at the face. From 28 to 32 holes are drilled per swing in a pyramid cut. Cut holes

FRED J. MILLER was born in Ohio, in 1857. He had a common and high school education, supplemented by personal study and special instruction. After serving a 4-year apprenticeship and working in various capacities in machine shops, he became a contributor to mechanical journals and finally a member of the editorial staff of The American Machinist, where he remained for twenty years, the last ten years as editor-in-chief of the magazine, and vice-president of the publishing company. On retiring from journalism, he was for nine years general manager of a group of typewriter factories, and was then commissioned Major of Ordnance in the U. S. Army, being stationed during most of his service at Rock Island Arsenal, where he organized the Civilian Service Division of the Arsenal. He is now a member of the Technical Advisory Committee of the War Claims Board at Washington. Major Miller became a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 1890, and has always taken an active interest in its affairs, having served on a number of important committees, and as a member of Council from 1904 to 1907, inclusive. He was elected President in December, 1919.

Introduction MARKED differences of opinion have been expressed by engineers interested in cleaning iron blast-furnace gases for use in hot-blast stoves and under boilers, in reference to the advantages of a hot-dry method over a cold-wet method. One point at issue involves the sensible heat energy in the moisture contained in the gas. Some advocates of the cold-wet methods claim that the condensation and resultant removal of the greater portion of this contained moisture by wet scrubbing, spraying or similar methods, results in a saving of some of this sensible heat energy, by reason of the fact that water vapor has a high capacity for sensible heat energy and may carry from the exit of a hot-blast stove, for example, more heat units than are sacrificed or lost when the gas is cleaned by this cold-wet method. Other advantages claimed for the latter method are: That gas burns more readily when it is free from moisture in any form; that because gas is made denser by cooling and removing the moisture it has a higher calorific value than hot gas carrying moisture; and that higher flame temperatures are obtained when the gas is cleaned by the cold-wet method. A search through the available literature fails to disclose any extensive calculations or records of conditions obtained in practice, bearing upon these phases of gas cleaning. This paper deals with these problems from the standpoint of the economy of using a gas of higher flame temperatures, of improved stove design, and of economy in the gas-cleaning department. Calculations have been made which show that by cleaning the gases by a cold-wet method the sensible heat energy of the blast-furnace gases is greatly reduced; and, in general, this loss of heat energy is far greater than that lost from the stoves or boilers due to the sensible heat capacity of the water vapor if carried away by the exit gases. The solid solubility of iron in 2 to 10 pct cupro-nickels increases with temperature and nickel content. Property changes accompanying various heat treatments indicate typical precipitation hardening behavior. Iron content also affects softening temperature and sub-scale formation. These factors, as well as impingement corrosion resistance, influence the optimum iron content of commercial alloys. FOR many years Cu-Ni alloys have been used extensively in the form of tubes, pipes, and plates for the construction of salt-water lines and surface condensers on shipboard and in tidewater power stations. The 30 pct Ni alloy has been considered more resistant to rapidly flowing sea water than alloys of lower nickel content, and has been standard on ships of the U. S. Navy. Some ten years ago, the still better corrosion resistance obtained by modifying the 30 pct Ni alloy with approximately 0.5 pct Fe was recognized, and the iron-bearing alloy rapidly superseded the plain alloy as the standard material for severe service. In 1945, Tracy and Hungerford1 published a study of the effect of iron on the corrosion of various cupro-nickels in sea-salt solutions, and their data indicated that the 10 pct Ni alloy containing about 0.75 pct Fe was equivalent to the 30 pct Ni alloy containing 0.5 pct Fe. This was confirmed by LaQue in discussion of the above paper, and by results in an experimental condenser set up at the Kure Beach marine test station of The International Nickel Co., reported by Freeman and Tracy.' The 10 pct Ni iron-bearing alloy is now being very widely used in applications where the 30 pct Ni iron-bearing alloy was formerly considered standard. While this "substitution" has undoubtedly been stimulated by the present extreme shortage of nickel, it must be emphasized that it involves no loss of service performance, and would have occurred anyway in the course of time, for economic reasons. In view of the increasing use of the 10 pct alloy, it seems desirable to make generally available the results of several investigations of Cu-Ni-Fe alloys carried out in the Metallurgical Research Laboratory of The American Brass Co. in recent years. The present paper, deals with the constitution of these alloys in the copper-rich corner of the system, and with the variations in hardness and tensile properties resulting from the heat treatment of alloys containing various amounts of iron. Most of this work is concerned with alloys containing 10 pct Ni. With over about 0.75 pct fe, the 10 pct Ni alloy is suscep- Alloys Several series of cupro-nickel alloys containing iron were used in these investigations. Most of them were prepared in the laboratory, but two samples of commercially fabricated alloys were included. Series A—Nominally 2 and 5 pct Ni, each with 0 to 1.5 pct Fe. Series B—Nominally 10 pct Ni with 0.1 to 0.4 pct Fe. Series C—Nominally 1.0 pct Ni with 0 to 2 pct Fe. Series D—Nominally 10 pct Ni with 3 to 5 pct Fe. Series E—Nominally 10 pct Ni with 1 and 1.5 pct Fe.

MAY began with a general strike of the bituminous and anthracite coal miners in the United States in progress, while in Great Britain about three quarters of a million workers became idle by a lockout, caused by a dispute respecting the question of the rights of management in their shops. The employers opened their shops on May 3 to men wishing to resume work, but few availed themselves of the opportunity. Up to this time the statistics had been showing a little increase in the rate of employment in Great Britain and business conditions were considered to be improving. From Russia came reports that the results of the famine had not been so bad as had been prophesied, which is not to say that they were not grievous. In prognostications such things are habitually overesti-mated. Seeding for the new crop has now begun in Russia, with hopes for better results than last year. However, the general economic situation in Russia steadily becomes worse. We had advices during May to the effect that the Soviet Government had decided to abolish the gold ruble even as a theoretical calculating unit and substitute a "goods index." This idea would be somewhat on the lines of Professor Fisher for stablizing the dollar, and there may be a chance to see how it will work in practice. There was a contradictory report from Russia, however, that it had been decided to revert to the gold basis. This is the more plausible report, for if there be anything to be deduced from economic theory and history the present paper rubles will completely collapse and return to gold basis will ensue simply because the people will refuse to sell their goods on anything else. The civil war in China came to a head during the first week in May when General Wu-Pei-fu crushed the forces of General Chang Tso-lin around Pekin. The victor declared his intention to be to reunite the North and the South and in course of time to arrange for a constitutional convention. We probably do not under-stand the conditions in China, but recent events do not appear to have solved the grave difficulties there, though they may be a step toward it. However, the immediate outlook does not appear good, General Chang having retired to the north and declared the secession of Manchuria and Mongolia.

The seriousness of the present tin scarcity has stimulated large consumers of this vital metal to develop drastic conservation measures in order to extend the available supplies to cover the emergency period. By devising new soldering methods and alloys the Bell System has contributed a substantial share in the tin conservation effort. Fortunately, the changes, as far as can be determined now, have not introduced weakness into the soldered joints. Some of the new procedurcs were already in the process of development at the onset of the emergency, while others were devised under its stress. In some instances, the newly developed solders were found to be more difficult to use than the alloys previously available, and would not have been introduced under normal conditions. One major change made that previously had been under consideration will result in large savings of tin. Unless service difficulties are encountered, this modification gives promise of remaining after the emergency has passed. The change involves a reduction in the amount of solder placed on a wiped joint between the cable sheath and the sleeve. Instead of the customary full sized wiped joint, a wipe of fillet proportions is formed. Through this change, a solder saving of more than 60 per cent per joint can be realized. Plumbers and cable splicers for many years have joined lead pipes and cable sheath by a soldering process called " wiping." The name is an apt description of the operation. For a wiped joint, the sections to be united are heated by molten solder poured over their surfaces, and the resulting semiliquid mass is manipulated by wiping with cloth pads to a well rounded symmetrical form like the one shown in Fig. I. The operation requires considerable skill on the part of the splicer and close control of the composition of the solder. At first consideration, the problem of tightness in such joints seems simple but experience shows that even under the best conditions the fissures frequently found in the solder occasionally link and form a path that allows leakage to occur. In telephone cables not maintained under gas pressure, such leaks permit the entrance of water, which wets the paper-covered conductors and thereby impairs the insulation value and causes service interruptions. Ry going to an extreme and wiping off all the solder in excess of a fillet, it has been found that many causes of porosity are eliminated. Figs. 2 and 3 show cross sections of joints wiped in the old and the new ways. The saving in solder, and consequently in strategic tin, is evident. The field splicing forces find that joints are easier to make by the new method and are less likely to be porous. The metallurgical considerations that are responsible for the success of the fillet wipe are of interest. The change involves a reduction in the amount of solder placed on a wiped joint between the cable sheath and the sleeve. Instead of the customary full sized wiped joint, a wipe of fillet proportions is formed. Through this change, a solder saving of more than 60 per cent per joint can be realized. Plumbers and cable splicers for many years have joined lead pipes and cable sheath by a soldering process called " wiping." The name is an apt description of the operation. For a wiped joint, the sections to be united are heated by molten solder poured over their surfaces, and the resulting semiliquid mass is manipulated by wiping with cloth pads to a well rounded symmetrical form like the one shown in Fig. I. The operation requires considerable skill on the part of the splicer and close control of the composition of the solder. At first consideration, the problem of tightness in such joints seems simple but experience shows that even under the best conditions the fissures frequently found in the solder occasionally link and form a path that allows leakage to occur. In telephone cables not maintained under gas pressure, such leaks permit the entrance of water, which wets the paper-covered conductors and thereby impairs the insulation value and causes service interruptions. Ry going to an extreme and wiping off all the solder in excess of a fillet, it has been found that many causes of porosity are eliminated. Figs. 2 and 3 show cross sections of joints wiped in the old and the new ways. The saving in solder, and consequently in strategic tin, is evident. The field splicing forces find that joints are easier to make by the new method and are less likely to be porous. The metallurgical considerations that are responsible for the success of the fillet wipe are of interest. Arthur Yates, lecturer in the mining department of the Royal School of Mines, London, died at Blackpool, on Feb. 14, 1923, at the age of 47 years. My first acquaintance with him was made in 1902, when taking over the management of the Redjang Lebong gold mines in Sumatra, of which he was the responsible metallurgical officer. For that position he was well qualified by reason of his previous experience with the Rand Central Ore Reduction Co., in South Africa, and particularly by his early training with the Cassel Gold Extracting Co., owners of the MacArthur-Forrest patents, and the first commercial company formed to work the then recently discovered cyanide process; in this connection, Mr. Yates had the advantage of working under J. S. MacArthur himself. Our association in Sumatra was maintained for six years, when I left. Mr. Yates remained and was eventually promoted to the management of the neighboring Soelit mine. During those six years and in the close association inseparable from life in an isolated mining camp, the sterling qualities which made him so good a man were unmistakable: industry and interest in his work, patience with everybody, a quiet and unassuming demeanor. On the exhaustion of the mine to which he had been promoted, he returned to England in 1913. In 1914, the Mining Department of the Imperial College was fortunate in securing his services. Hardly, however, had he settled down when the war broke out and he spent some years in the Cleveland District promoting the efforts of the Government toward greater output. Returning to college in 1919, Mr. Yates met the full flood of Service students. The qualities which made him a man amongst men in the world made him a man among students in the college; a senior student if you like. But, unsuspected, a dread disease had fastened itself upon him, making itself felt for the first time during the summer course he was conducting in the South Wales coal field, in 1922. Against its relentless onset he opposed the bravest optimism, and when at last he realized that he was going under, and was in fact dying, his pronounced regret was that he was leaving the boys. In his death, at the age of forty-seven, staff and students in the Mining Department have experienced a great loss, that of a reliable friend, and their deepest sympathy goes out to the young widow and son in their irreparable loss.
