This is a critical examination of the theory that the amount of carbon necessary to form the iron-carbon (carbide) eutectoid is lowered by the addition of any carbide-forming element. Although this theory has been built up over a long period of years, it appears, in the light of recent published investigations upon the ternary constitutional diagrams of iron with carbon and other alloying elements, to be no longer tenable. A survey of these new results, summarized below, shows that (as is known) some metals lower the carbon content of the iron-carbon (carbide) eutectoid, whereas others raise it, but (as not heretofore clearly set forth) some first move the eutectoid in one direction and then, at higher concentrations, shift it in the opposite direction. Moreover, these differences in behavior exist even among the common alloying metals classed as carbide formers. PART I Influence of Body-centered Cubic Elements The effects of the various body-centered cubic metals (chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium, columbium and tan. talum) are reviewed individually. Iron-carbon-chromium System.—In the monograph on Alloys of Iron and Chromium, Kinzel and Crafts1 concluded that the carbon content of the eutectoid is lowered by increasing the chromium content. The quantitative influence of chromium on the eutectoid point of iron-carbon alloys was shown by Monypenny2 (Fig. I) and no data have been forthcoming to refute his findings. Iron-carbon-tungsten System.—Gregg,3 in the monograph on Alloys of Iron and Tungsten, accepted the data showing that tungsten decreases the amount of carbon required to form the eutectoid. The influence of tungsten on the eutectoid percentage of carbon as determined by Oberhoffer and Daeves4 is shown in Fig. 2; these results have received general approval. , I ron-carbon-molybdenum System.—In the monograph on Alloys of Iron and Molybdenum, Gregg5 reviewed the work of Guillet,6 Swinden,7 and ReedI8 all showing that molybdenum lowered the carbon content of the eutectoid, whereas Takei9 contradicted this conclusion. Svetchnikoff and Alferova,10 a little later, showed that large additions of molybdenum shift the eutectoid to the right. I. INTRODUCTION. SINCE the discovery of silver at Cobalt, Ontario, in 1903 more than 100,000,000 oz. of silver have been produced b: the mines in the Nipissing district, and there is reason to believe that at least as much more will be produced in the next five years. The estimated value of the aggregate output o ore to the end of 1910 is $48,327,280. The ore yielded 93,977,833, oz. of silver and was mined at a net profit of about $26,000,000. For 1910 the production was 30,558,825 oz. valued at $15,436,894, and yielding a profit of about $9,000',000 The details of the production of the Cobalt district for the years 1904 to 1909, inclusive, are given in Table I. THOUGH the dust-control systems in the crushing plants and other buildings at Morenci do not differ materially from similar installations in other large copper reduction works, it is probable that in few other plants has as much attention been paid to the dust problem. Possibly the most striking feature of the Morenci installation is the manner in which the necessary equipment has been built into the various structures, and the absence of unsightly pipes, ducts, and fan houses. That this result has been attained is due, in no small part, to the basic conception that the control of the dust in a milling plant should be an essential part of the process itself and not something to be tacked on later after the plant is in operation. The control systems were designed and developed along with the general plant construction program and when the first car of ore was dumped into the crusher the dust-control equipment was ready.

For electrolytic recovery of silver from dilute aqueous solutions improved mass transfer is necessary to achieve favourable current efficiencies and high space-time yields. The many cell designs proposed for this application can be divided into two different groups: cells from which the silver must be redissolved and cells from which the deposit can be reclaimed as a metal. Introduction Electrolytic silver recovery methods have proven advantageous under technical and economic aspects for the treatment of rinse water, still rinses and spent silver solutions in the electroplating and surface finishing industry, of exhausted fixing baths from photographic processing, bleed electrolytes from silver refining processes and leach liquors. Examples of the compositions of typical dilute silver solutions are listed in Table I.

(communication to the Secretary*): The recent papers in the Transactions by Vogt,' Lindgren2 and Weed: on ore-deposits that have formed as a direct result of igneous intrusions, show that deposits of this class are widely distributed over the world, and are occasionally of commercial value. This is especially true if we consider under this head all deposits in the zone of contactrnletamorphism, the origin of which may be ascribed to the gases and vapors generated by the heat of the intrusive rock. Mr. Smith's description of the Chillagoe garnet-formations containing copper, leads one to regard these depoaits as of contactrmetamorphic origin, although he gives certain reaeons for supposing them to be of igneous origin.

The problem of stability of slopes in reservoirs is one of real interest in civil engineering. The problem is whether the valley walls will remain stable or whether they are likely to slide as conditions are changed by storage of water in the reservoir. If major slides are indicated, as on the walls of relatively steep canyons, one must estimate whether they will be so located and of sufficient size as to interfere with operation of the reservoir-as by blocking the outlets, or by displacing sufficient water to over-top the dam in a huge wave. Some cases involve problems in soil mechanics for slides in earth or weaker rock; other locations need the assistance of rock mechanics for slides in harder rock. While this is not a new problem, attention has recently been focused on its importance by the hugh landslide into the Vaiont reservoir in 1963, which claimed the lives of over 2000 people and forced abandonment of the dam and powerhouse.

The development of cube-on-edge secondary re crystallization texture in Si-Fe strip depends upon the ability of inclusions, such as manganese sulfide, to restrain nomal grain gvowth. The ability of inclusions to perform this function is shown to depend upon their size and distribution. The desired uniform dispersion of many small inclusions is obtained by controlling the cooling rate from above the solution tempmature of the inclusions or, alternatively, by drastic 'quenching from above the solution temperature followed by heat treating at a lower temperature. The development of the cube-on-edge secondary recrystallization texture in Si-Fe strip depends upon both establishing the proper primary recrystallization texture and having inclusions to restrain normal grain growth. It has been suggested that the first requirement is met with a texture which, though weak, is near (110)[001]. A mechanism for secondary recrystallization originally proposed by ielsen' is consistent with the presence of this primary texture. It is visualized that a secondary grain appears where two adjacent grains happen to be sufficiently similar in orientation to be capable of behaving as a single large grain. This pair of grains will grow at the expense of its smaller neighbors as a consequence of its having lower grain boundary free energy. Other explanations of the origin of the secondary recrystallization texture have been offered,' and it can be concluded that the mechanism is not fully understood. Nevertheless, it is apparent that operationally the necessary primary recrystallization texture is obtained simply by interposing an anneal during the cold reduction to final gage. The role of inclusions in the development of the secondary recrystallization texture has been demonstrated by May and Turnbull4 in a comparison of a high-purity heat and a heat containing manganese sulfide. They showed that the driving force for secondary recrystallization is inversely proportional to the diameter of the matrix grains and that the function of the inclusions is to maintain a small matrix grain size. Other inclusions, such as various sul- fides,')' silicon nitride,8 and vanadium nitride,' titanium carbide,'' and vanadium carbide," have been shown to be effective in promoting secondary recrystallization to the cube-on-edge texture. There is also evidence that silica inclusions in Si-Fe strip made by powder-metallurgy techniques perform this function.' This report is concerned with the second of the two requirements for secondary recrystallization, namely the importance of the metallurgical control of the size and therefore number of inclusions. While the concepts involved are simple, they are fundamental to the making of this material. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A heat containing 3.27 pct Si, 0.026 pct S, 0.06 pct Mn, and 0.004 pct C was made in an air induction furnace from electrolytic iron, 98 pct ferro-silicon, electrolytic manganese, and iron sulfide. The heat was divided between graphite and baked-sand molds with a cavity 2-5/8 by 5 in. and with walls 2-3/4 in. thick. Slabs, 1 in. thick and 2-5/8 by 5 in., were cut from the ingots and hot-rolled either in the as-cast condition or after one of the heat treatments described later. After pickling, the 80- to 100-mil-thick hot-rolled band was, unless otherwise noted, heat-treated for 5 min at 900°C before being cold-rolled to 25 mils. After a heat treatment of 1 to 3 min at 860°C, the strip was cold-rolled to 12 mils, the final thickness. The percent cube-on-edge texture was determined by dividing the maximum torque as averaged from four samples by the maximum torque of a 3-1/4 pct Si-Fe single crystal having the (110) plane in the plane of the sample. The torque measurements were made in a field of 1000 oe on 1-in.-diam disks. The performance of a gas reservoir su,bject to water drive is often affected by interference due to gas procluction or injection in neighboring reservoirs adjacent to a common aquifer. Field data available on production-pressure behavior of several reservoirs indicate that prediction of reservoir performence must include the effects due to mutual interference. A method developed to predict the performance of two or more interfering gas reservoirs, subject to specified production-iniection .rchedule.s, is presented. The method involves the comhinatiorz of the theory of unsteady-state water movernent with appropriate meterial balance consideration.s. The procedure which extends M. Mortada's treatment for interfering oil reservoirs makes use of his dimen-.sionless pressure drop quantities. prevented graphically in the literature. In order to evaluale the predictive accuracy and practical field applicability of the theory, the method has been applied to analyze the performance of two actual gas reservoirs in mutual interference. The calculations were performed on an IBA4 704 computer. The predicted performances were alro calcltlated with the interference effects ignored. The results show that considerably better agreement between calculated and observed behavior ic. obtained when the interference effects are included. INTRODUCTION Fluid communication between any number of oil or gas reservoirs adjacent to a common aquifer results in mutual interference effects on their production-pressure behavior. The theory, application and interpretation of pressure build-up behavior of oil wells, drawdown tests on oil or gas-producing formations and behavior of several storage reservoirs indicate ample experimental evidence of mutual interference. A method developed to compute the behavior of interfering oil reservoirs was published several years ago by Mortada.4 Studies conducted during the recent years on underground storage of natural gas clearly indicated the need for extending Mortada's work to the case of interfering gas reservoirs. The adoption of appropriate material balance equations in conjunction with the unsteady-state pressure interference theory yields pressure-explicit equations. Their solution, their application to a specific case history and an over-all evaluation of the developed method through the comparison of predicted and observed field performances were the main objectives of this study. THIS paper is a preliminary statement, intended to present the more important results of the recent studies of the ore deposits of the Alleghany district in advance of the publication of the complete report, now in preparation. The Alleghany district (Fig. 1) has been a producer of gold since the early days of California gold mining. As in other California gold camps, placers yielded the bulk of the earlier production, but during the last 30 years lode deposits have been the only important source of output. The district differs from other California gold-quartz districts in that nearly all the production is from small shoots of high-grade ore. The mining camps of Alleghany and Forest are on the western flank of the Sierra Nevada range about 20 miles west of the crest. The gently sloping lava-covered plateau which controls the upland topography has been trenched by deep canyons of the westward flowing streams, which are cut to depths of as much as 2000 ft. below the crests of the ridges. The district is about 18 miles from Nevada City but the automobile road which connects the two places is 31 miles long. The senior writer first visited the district in 1913 and published a short description of the lode deposits.1 The increasing importance of the district made further study desirable. A detailed topographic map was therefore made by W. B. Upton, Jr., of the U. S. Geological Survey, in the spring of 1924, and the senior writer spent parts of the field seasons of 1924 and 1925 in the district. For the second field season the Geological Survey was fortunate in securing the services of R. W. Gannett, who had already done geologic work in the district for several of the mining companies. Owing to the death of Mr. Gannett in October, 1925, just before the close of his field work, the work of preparation of the entire report fell to Mr. Ferguson. He takes this opportunity of acknowledging how deeply he is indebted to Mr. Gannett for his excellent work in the field, and his realization of how greatly the completion of the report on the district has suffered from lack of Mr. Gannett's assistance in the office. In October, 1.928, after the completion of the first draft of the manuscript, Mr. Ferguson made a short visit to the district.

(con~munication to the Secretary*):—It is not in a spirit of criticism that I offer a supplemental suggestion or two on the subjects covered by this valuable and highly instructive memoir. There are two points which, in my opinion, should have received greater emphasis in Mr. Emmons's excellent paper. One is the fundamental r6le played by the chlorides under certain conditions in ore-formation. The other is the possible establishment of geographic relationships among the four pheilomena of (1) excessive chlo-ridic content of mine-waters; (2) the abundance of chloridic compounds of the precious metals; (3) the presence of man-gancse oxides; and (4) the diminishing importance, in ore-genesis, of the metallic sulphates. Although Mr. Emmons's notes refer to gold alone, it may be pertinently asked whether the same principles do not hold good for silver and copper also, since these metals form, together with gold, a distinct and well-known chemical group. That the reactions involved apply equally well to the other two metals mentioned, is sbown by a number of recent observations and discussions. Chloridic ores of silver are, as I have lately endeavored to show, mainly worked in arid or desert regions only; and the great deposits of disseminated copper-ores are similarly characteristic of such regions, in which both classes doubtless owe their formation to the abundance of saline materials derived from desert dusts, and to the plentiful and almost universal presence of manganese oxide. Under these climatic conditions, silver is somewhat more abundantly deposited than copper and gold, because its chloride is so much less soluble. The forecasts presented in this paper constitute an attempt by the writer to predict the pattern of the consumption of petroleum products in the United States during the period of transition from war to peace. Although, in preparing the estimates, secular trends were not overlooked, greater emphasis was placed upon considerations of a cyclical character, or upon influences which might be peculiar to parts of the period. The estimates do not extend beyond the year 1950 because by then conditions in the industry should have returned to normal. The consumption of petroleum products is affected, of course, by changes in the condition of business in general. Before estimates of petroleum consumption could be prepared, therefore, it was necessary to predict the pattern of general business during the period under review, particularly the economic series that in the past have shown the closest relationships with petroleum consumption. It is the writer's view that business activity in this country (as measured by industrial production) will be higher on the average during the period between the end of the war and the year 1950 than it ever was before during a peacetime period of the same duration. When the war is over, consumers will have saved amounts of money that will be very large as compared with any previous accumulations. There is little question, therefore, as to the financial ability of consumers to purchase goods. The production of many durable consumers' goods, such as automobiles, refrigerators and radios, has been completely stopped since early in the war; also, many semidurable and nondurable consumers' goods have not been available in the quantities or the qualities desired. There is considerable needi therefore, for consumers to purchase goods after the war. The important question is whether consumers will purchase goods in "1arge enough quantities to keep our economy running at a high level. The writer answers this question in the affirmative. The mere existence of very large consumer savings lends considerable support to this view because, with such backlogs of " security," consumers can afford to spend more of their current earnings than they otherwise could. Also, several polls have been taken, which indicate that consumers expect to buy large quantities of a variety of goods. Some of the savings, therefore, probably will go into current consumption. Even though this percentage is relatively small, so that the bulk of the funds accumulated by consumers during the war continues to remain as savings during the period under review, spending should be great enough to start the production cycle and keep it

IN 1947 the steel industry rebounded from its wartime effort and produced a record-breaking peacetime tonnage of steel ingots. During the first six months of the year the industry produced 42,000,000 tons of ingots and expected to produce 85,000,000 tons for the year. With a rated capacity of some 91,000,000 tons, production was at a rate of about 93 per cent of capacity. Credit must be extended to the steel producers who have maintained this steady state of operations while faced with many problems, not the least of which was a continued shortage of satisfactory scrap. Furthermore, the steel industry started a record-breaking peacetime expansion program at a total cost of more than $1,000,000,000. This program will increase the ingot-making capacity of the country by 2,500,000 tons and should be completed in 1948.

THE CHAIRMAN.-Thank you. Since the papers are rather closely related, I think rather than taking them one at a time we will entertain discussion on any of these problems at this time. W. A. REICH.*-We, of course, quite a while ago got the yellow light that Mr. Cole spoke of, and like everyone else immediately started to study silicon bronzes and brasses. We were interested in the silicon bronzes and brasses because we felt that in order to replace gun metal which makes up a large part of our use we needed something with an elastic limit at least equal to that of gun metal. That means at least 12,000 lb. per sq. in. This study was aimed only at tin conservation. Then we dropped the study of silicon bronzes because high purity copper which is needed in their manufacture became a scarce item. To make a long story short we have recommended to our designing engineers that they use 85-5-5-5 wherever possible because 85-5-5-5 we understand can be made entirely from scrap with little or no tin addition. 85-5-5-5 has a lower elastic limit than 88-8-4, so we felt that we would need another substitute material, a structural alloy with an elastic limit equal to that of 88-8-4, and we immediately turned to the manganese bronze type of alloy. The poor foundry properties of standard manganese bronzes were mentioned by Mr. Thieme and since we feel that high zinc content is largely responsible for this difficulty, our development is directed along the lines of uncovering a material with a lower zinc content and which gains its elastic strength from the addition of other alloying elements, such as, aluminum, manganese and iron. It must be possible to make this alloy entirely from scrap with no additions of scarce high purity material. I would appreciate an expression of opinion on how low we can go in zinc content with this type of alloy without seriously impairing the availability, and how high we can go in aluminum content without making use of aluminum restricted for that use. We assume that the maximum lead content must be placed at 1 ½ per cent to insure good availability and we feel that about I per cent of tin in the alloy would improve salt water corrosion resistance similar to the effect of tin in Admiralty Metal. Has anyone here had experience with the effect of tin and lead on the weldability of such an alloy? C. S. COLE.-What percentage of lead and tin? W. A. REICH.-About 1 per cent of lead and 1 per cent of tin. We are studying the weldability of the alloy but perhaps someone already has the answer. (Pause, no answer) The claim has been made that 1 per cent of lead can be added to certain silicon bronzes without impairing their properties. A silicon bronze with a low zinc content requires high purity copper in its manufacture but if say the 15 per cent zinc, 44 silicon balance copper alloy could be made, with a I per cent lead content, some quantity could be made from scrap. One of the greatest improvements in drilling equipment has been the development of hard facing metals which are welded by electricity or by acetylene to form a facing which protects the steel of the bit from abrasive wear. The main desirable characteristics of hard facing metals are resistance to abrasive wear, resistance to shock and perfect bond with underlying metal. Resistance to abrasion offered by various metals shows many anomalies. Compounds containing carbon, silicon and boron are the most important hard substances. Carbon, as diamond, silicon carbide and especially the carbides of iron, chromium and tungsten are the outstanding hard products in common use. Tungsten carbide is probably the most commonly used. It is made in the electric furnace and it is important to get the right amount of carbon and the correct crystalline structure in order to obtain the greatest hardness and greatest resistance to abrasion. It may be obtained in three main divisions: wrought, cast and casehardened. Insert hard metals are common. The method of application varies, but it is generally welded to the bit, placed in channels or in drilled holes and covered with a hard surfacing metal. Robinson' has given a very complete article on the use of inserts. Gregg and Küttner2 has discussed the metallography of tungsten carbides and given a good bibliography of the subject,. The time and expense of large-scale testing, together with variations in results, led to the development of a laboratory testing machine for determining the abrasive-resisting qualities of different metals. This machine consists of a motor-driven 40-grain, alumina-base corundum wheel, 8 in. dia., rotating at 30 r.p.m. It is run wet and dressed with

SCRAP metals to the value of more than a billion and a half dollars were recovered in the United States in 1939 for further use in industry. Few people have any true conception of the magnitude of the secondary-metal industry as related to that engaged in the production of the primary, or virgin, metals; of its importance, particularly when a shortage of primary metals exists, as at present; or of the advance that has been made in standardizing and improving the quality of its products. Of the iron and steel produced in the United States in 1939 (the data used in this article are largely taken from Bureau of Mines reports for that year) just over 50 per cent came from scrap and slightly less than 50 per cent from ore. Of the principal nonferrous metals-aluminum, anti-mony, copper, lead, nickel, tin, and zinc-63 per cent came from domestic ores and 37 per cent from scrap. Fig. 1 presents graphically the relative tonnage and value of primary and secondary production of ferrous and nonferrous metals. In this chart only purchased secondary metals are considered, the figures being exclusive of "home" or "plant" scrap which amounts to rather large figures in the iron and steel industry. Incidentally, the chart shows that from the tonnage standpoint the iron and steel industry is some twenty times larger than the nonferrous industry, though with regard to the value of the product the ratio drops to about two to one.

Uniquely colored, thin-bedded quartzite is quarried between Crossville and Crab Orchard in Cumberland County, Tenn. It is produced in all sizes up to the limits of transportation from beds usually ranging in thickness from less than 1/2 in. to 6 in. The stone is very resistant to wear and weathering and is marketed throughout the country for many different purposes in exterior and interior construction. The annual production exceeds 36,000 tons, valued at nearly $1,000,000.

The 27th Regiment of Engineers was organized in the Army not long ago for special mining service at the front (or, we might even say, in advance of the front). In military engineering in warfare, the "sappers and miners" are one of the ancient branches of the corps of engineers; but in modern warfare the importance of this service has been greatly magnified. The 27th Engineers is a. special mining regiment, which is being recruited from mining engineers and miners from all districts of the country, already containing representatives from all the mining states between Arizona and Montana and from the Atlantic to the Pacific Coast. Those of us who cannot go to the front should not-be content to tell the young fellows to go, and then forget them. We want the men of the 27th Engineers to know that they represent our industry and their industry; and that the industry is going to think about them and back them up. Expressing the above views, the Engineering and. Mining Journal instituted a fund for the aid of the 27th Engineers. It has already raised a considerable sum of money, and contributions are coming in fast; but there is no limit to what is wanted. This money is being spent in providing the regiment with athletic equipment, both outdoor and indoor; with games for the barracks; with cigarettes and smoking tobacco; with contributions to the funds of the several companies that the men raise among themselves. It is contemplated, moreover, that there will be need to extend aid and comfort to some of the families whom the men have left behind. Contributions of books, sweaters and other knitted articles are also being received.

Said Plutarch a long time ago, ?To appreciate a man's work at the full, it is well to know the man himself, his circumstances and the incidents of his career." He might as truly have said "gift" instead of "work." Ambrose Swasey, engineer, collaborater with scientists, promoter of engineering research, patron of Engineering Foundation, advancer of the good of mankind, modest gentleman and generous giver, is, happily, well known to a great many engineers, who will therefore more fully appreciate his recent additional gift, for the use of the Engineering Foundation, which; purpose is "the furtherance of research in science and engineering, and the advancement of the profession of engineering and the good of mankind." But full appreciation of a gift of money necessitates more than acquaintance with -the giver and knowledge of the amount. Its timeliness; its inspiration; the character and continuity of its benefits, all must be comprehended. But whose imagination, though far-visioned as the great telescopes Mr. Swasey has built, can see the limits of benefit of such gifts as he has made to the Engineering Foundation, attracting-as they will-other gifts and evidences of, devotion to a great cause-? Every such gift lays responsibilities upon the recipients. Will American engineers grasp not merely, their pecuniary value but also emulate the spirit of fraternity and desire for harmony which have accompanied them? Shall we not work together and with Ambrose Swasey to advance still further the good of mankind, thus to demonstrate an acceptance of our obligations to humanity which is a counterpart in a democracy of the noblesse oblige of aristocratic tradition?
