Three explosives with different detonation characteristics were tested by studying their cratering ability in a granite-gneiss. The strain wave generating characteristics of these explosives were also studied in the same rock medium. Correlations between the relative performance of three explosives as evaluated by crater studies and other methods of evaluation are indicated. Numerous test methods have been employed to evaluate the output performance of explosives; for example, the underwater explosion method, the airblast method and the ballistic pendulum method.'*' For blasting applications, the study of explosion produced craters and explosion generated strain waves are the most meaningful. This laboratory has employed these techniques extensively for many years and has shown that the detonation properties of explosives and their ability to generate strain waves in rock are related and that the amplitude and shape of the strain wave is related to some of the crater parameters such as slab thickness and fly rock velocity.3'11 However, a good comparison between the relative performance of explosives as determined by the crater and strain wave methods had not been made. The purpose of this investigation was to determine if the relative performance of three explosives as determined by the crater method shows a correlation with the relative performance as determined by the strain wave method. If a good correlation exists between these two sets of relative performance, it should then be possible to relate the detonation properties of an explosive to its ability to break rock in a crater test. In most commercial blasting operations, the diameter of the blast hole remains constant even though the type of explosive may change. In general, it is the explosive volume rather than the weight which remains constant when two or more explosives of different density are compared. Therefore all tests in this investigation were conducted on a constant volume basis rather than on a constant weight basis. TEST SITE AND ROCK PROPERTIES The tests described in this paper were conducted at a granite quarry owned and operated by the Consolidated Quarries Div. of the Georgia Marble Co. at Lithonia, Ga. The tests were performed in an area where the exposed rock surface was nearly horizontal and where the general rock mass had few joints or faults. The rock has an apparent sp gr of 2.6 and a longitudinal propagation velocity of 18,000 fps. The characteristic impedance of Lithonia granite gneiss is 53(lb - sec/in3). EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE There are many parameters which must be considered in the study of explosion-produced craters. The role played by each variable in the explosive-rock-crater system can be determined by experimental techniques in which one parameter is varied while others are maintained constant. In this investigation, the crater geometry was studied as the depth was varied for each of three explosives. The explosive volume and rock-type were held constant for all crater tests. The experimental arrangement used in performing the crater tests is illustrated schematically in Fig. 1.

Like most minerals, coal is inherently a demand-limited commodity. The very sedimentary nature of its occurrence implies greater availability potential than demand. But this situation is overridden by economics among fuels, between coals, and within coal blends. Such considerations make coal forecasting a very hazardous profession indeed. THERMAL COAL If one thought that the lead times involved with a mining project were very long, one has obviously not been exposed to the planning process in the electric generation business - a process seriously confounded by shifts in load growth, environmental pressures, capital intensity, security of fuel sourcing, inter-fuel economics, and so on. But as a general rule, the near-term forecasts for thermal coal can reliably be based on a bottom-up, plant-by-plant analysis. Cement plant conversions can also be reasonably estimated next in order of reliability, although they have a much wider spectrum of coal qualities and fuel sources to choose from with a notably higher tolerance for sulfur and ash. Finally, industrial demand can be assembled from the estimates for conversions by pulp/paper plants, chemical plants, etc. The industrial sector is harder to estimate, since it may involve small boilers or dual-fired units. Assessing demand in the Pacific Rim is relatively a straightforward process in the near term because the major importing countries are all located on the Asian continent with either negligible or very minor (yet stable) indigenous coal production, (itself often operated on a subsidized basis). Furthermore, all imports are seaborne. These major importers are Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong with Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia up-and-coming consumers. The suppliers to this market all have substantial reserves to back up decades of exports to these countries. Australia, the US, Canada, South Africa, China, and the USSR dominate the supply side. The second oil-shock of 1979/1980 has convinced the importers that reliance on oil can be expensive and eminently interruptible. Thus, they are determined to diversify away from oil' to nuclear and coal for generating electricity and for coal for other purposes where possible. This trend is seen to continue even in the face of the oil glut worldwide and oil-price reductions in early 1982. But the importers are also convinced that reliance on one coal source and, in particular, one infrastructure route for the coal chain from mine to consumer can be equally expensive and interruptible. Strikes in the US and Australia; excessive demurrage at certain ports; relegation of coal to a lower priority on multiple-use railroads in the USSR and China; and concern over escalation on high-infrastructure or high-freight coal chains are among the risks worrying the importers. As a consequence, Pacific Rim thermal coal purchases are being allocated among supplier nations, between ports, and within each country. An example of Japan's shift away from Australia and toward the US and Canada is shown in the estimates in Table 1. But the confidence of the import estimates deteriorates sharply beyond the plant conversion timetables and construction schedules in the near term. If part of the second generation of coal-fired power plants can handle lower-energy coals, the field of suppliers could widen to accept sizeable tonnages from Alaska, Wyoming, Alberta, or New Zealand resources. These supply sources generally have some infrastructure or freight advantage to compensate for their lower quality and to compete on a delivered energy-unit basis. These also offer diversification in sourcing. And the possibility of coal liquefaction in Japan further widens the sourcing network. A great number of Pacific Rim coal forecasts have been generated, especially for Japanese thermal-coal imports which are expected to grow strongly in the 1980's. Since the Japanese themselves have not yet settled their energy policy, the exact numbers are hard to call. Nevertheless, at 50 million tonnes of imports in 1990, Japan would consume 50-60% of the total Asian thermal coal imports as shown on Tables 2 and 6. The next most important consumers are the "island" nations of Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong (see Tables 3-5). All three are embarking on power plant developments usually with captive unloading facilities, capable of accepting more than 100,000-dwt vessels. Korea, with no-indigenous bituminous coal, is not especially enamoured with US coals, which are deemed too heavily loaded by freight and infrastructure costs -- up to 70% of the delivered price. Thermal coal contracts are presently split to Australia (70%) and to Canada (30%). Korea Electric Power Co. is already considering second-generation boilers capable of burning lower-quality coals than the present standard. Korea does burn domestic anthracite.

THE previous determinations of the solvus of tin in solid lead disagree with one another by as much as 40°C or almost 10 at. pct. Even determinations that appear to be careful differ considerably in both the solubility and its temperature coefficient. Recent kinetic workl -3 on the rate of precipitation of tin from lead-tin alloys and thermodynamic work4 on the heat of solution of tin in lead have given some insight into the time necessary to reach equilibrium in this system. As this time is longer than that used in almost all previous determinations of the solvus, these determinations are questionable. Since the interpretation of recent kinetic results requires accurate values of the equilibrium solubility the present work was undertaken. DISCUSSION OF PREVIOUS RESULTS The methods used in previous studies may be placed into three classes: 1) Several alloys covering a range of compositions are allowed to reach "equilibrium" at a certain temperature.5-7 Some property, such as the X-ray lattice parameter of the lead-rich phase or the re- sistivity of the alloy, is then measured as a function of composition. The solubility limit for that temperature is taken to be that composition at which a discontinuity in the property occurs. However, the recent kinetic work has shown that tin precipitates in two stages. The first stage is rapid but leaves the lead still supersaturated. The second stage is very slow, and it seems from the equilibration times quoted by the investigators of the solvus that the end of the first stage of precipitation was usually mistaken for equilibrium. This is especially true at temperatures below 100°C where the first reaction is still quite rapid (from minutes to months), but where the second stage is so slow that very long holding times are required to reach equilibrium. Alternatively micrographic work8 on several alloys of different compositions seems to have given good results if done carefully. 2) The beginning of precipitation in a homogenized alloy is measured as it cools slowly8-10. Since reactions in solids undercool easily, such determinations will always give too low a temperature for the solvus. 3) Some property of an alloy is measured as a function of temperature while the alloy is above the solvus.5,9,11 The range of temperature can usually be extended slightly into the two phase region. Then the alloy is precipitated at a much lower temperature and slowly reheated. The solvus is taken to be the lowest temperature where the property of the reheated alloy is equal to that previously determined for the homogeneous alloy. Usually one also expects a discontinuity at the solvus in the temperature variation of the property for the reheated alloy. The difficulty in this method is the sluggishness of the dissolution process, and this method may give too high a solvus temperature. EXPERIMENTAL The phase boundary or solvus temperature was determined by a modification of method 3 for a series of chemically analyzed high-purity alloys, ranging from 5.1 to 26.4 at. pct Sn. The resistance, as a function of temperature, of a sample of homogenized alloy (which could easily be undercooled) was compared with the equilibrium resistance which that alloy sample attained after precipitation at room temperature followed by long isothermal anneals at various temperatures. Before each anneal the sample was rehomogenized and reprecipitated. The solvus temperature could be located to within 1°C as the intersection of the resistance vs temperature curves for the homogenized and equilibrium alloys. No attempt was made to locate the phase boundary more accurately since the limiting factor was the precision with which the alloys could be analyzed. This precision was ±0.1 wt pct Sn and corresponds to an error of 1 deg in temperature. This use of isothermal anneals differs from some of the previous investigations in which method 3 was used with baths of slowly rising temperatures. A description and capabilities of the Mine Roof Simulator at the Pittsburgh Mining Technology Center is illustrated for testing longwall roof support equipment. This unique Mine Roof Simulator has the capacity to exert 3 million lbs. of compressive force vertically and 1.6 million lbs. of force horizontally to simulate loads on hydraulic supports typically found in longwall mining. The supports that undergo testing are instrumented with strain gauges and photoelastic coatings such that critically strained areas become readily apparent. These critically strained areas are redesigned or retrofitted with appropriate reinforcement and retested. A data base will be accumulated from several support designs that will lead to an optimized design that will have the potential to reduce downtime by malfunctions of supports and thus increase productivity. A typical test procedure and analysis is given for a two leg 350 ton shield along with a description for placement of strain gauges, displacement gauges, and hydraulic pressure monitors for critical sites.

The south border of Espirito Santo begins about 400 km. north of Rio de Janeiro and extends along the Atlantic Coast northward some 325 km. and inland 100 to 150 km. The area under consideration, where quartz crystal of strategic grades has been mined, extends from 19º to 21º and 30º south latitude; and from 40º to 41º and 30º west longitude. This includes the central part of Espirito santo, chiefly south of the Rio Doce from the Atlantic ocean, and west across the border into Minas Gerais near the town of Aimores, in the municipalities of Aimores, Minas Gerais; Baixo Guandu, Santa Teresa, Santa Leopoldina, Colatina, Joao Neiva, Fundao and Domingo Mar-tines, Espirito Santo (Fig. I). During 1943 and the first half of 1944, this region accounted for approximately 3 to 5 per cent of the quartz crystal produced in Brazil. Shipments of crystal have been made chiefly by rail to Rio de Janeiro. This region is serviced by the E. F. Minas-Vitoria and E. F. Leopoldina to Rio de Janeiro through vitoria; and by the E. F. Minas-Vitoria and E. F. Centra] do Brasil through Bello Horizonte, Minas Gerais to Rio de Janeiro. The major deposits are accessible from the railheads by dirt roads, some being 5 to 30 km. off the road, reached by trail. In 1943 and the first half of 1944, the bulk of the production was from inter- mountain marshes and adjoining hillside alluvial placer deposits in the zone surrounding the town of Santa Teresa. Most of these deposits were formed from the erosion of pegmatite~, quartz veins and pockets in the gneiss, with minor quantities produced from miarolitic cavity fillings in the granitic rock. Early Operations Mining of quartz crystal in this region began in 1928 and has been stimulated by the market demand for military uses. Before 1936 little attention was given to it, either in Espirito Santo or eastern Minas Gerais. From 1936 to 1941 the Japanese sent agents to various points of production or potential production to acquire quartz through purchase. They bought crysta1 as small as 10 grams. Since '94' only the United States and Great Britain have received quartz from Brazil. The United States purchases crystals of 100 grams and larger for strategic purposes. The first known discoveries were made either in the municipalities of Aimores, Minas Gerais, or in Baixo Guandu, 01 Domingos Martines, Espirito Santo. Marketable quartz crysta1 was first found either in the massive quartz replacement veins of the Victor Hugo mine in the municipality of Domingo Martines, or in the large 'ores of quartz in the pegmatites near Baixo Guandu, extending into Minas Gerais. THE various methods of treating pulp in air-agitation tanks offer problems for experiment and study which are fascinating as well as practical. The usual method heretofore has been to fill each tank in turn, agitate the mixture the required period and then discharge the treated pulp into a storage-tank, from which it. is drawn to the filter as required. A later method is to run the pulp from the tube-mill, classifier, thickener, or settler into the first of a set of tanks, and thence continuously or in series through the remaining tanks, finally drawing off the pulp to a continuous filter, or to a pulp-storage tank if the filter is of the intermittent type. It is this method which I propose to discuss here in a preliminary way, with the idea of going exhaustively into the examination of the results of a series of experiments in a later paper. It may be of interest to note that the design of a cyanide-plant has recently been completed in which the estimated cost of the agitation-tanks, storage-tanks, and pumps was 30 per cent higher for the charge-agitation arrangement than for the series plan. The first question in studying the series method is, "What is the actual period of treatment undergone by the pulp?? One first supposes that by chance some of the pulp may get through with little or no treatment, while other portions may stay in the tanks a needlessly long period. The former is not probable or even possible, and the latter is, practically, true to only a limited extent. The greater the number of tanks the greater is the percentage of chance that all the pulp will be treated equally. Without going into the mathematical analysis of the problem (which is of little value, since it is based on problematical premises), its important terms may be clearly grasped by thinking of, or " visualizing," the conditions when,

For iron ore sinters to be good blast furnace burden, they need to possess certain basic properties such as cold mechanical strength, reducibility, etc. Relations between such basic parameters and sintering parameters (composition of the mix, fuel consumption, operating conditions of the sintering plant, etc.) are not always well understood. For example, one cannot explain the differences in quality noticed for sinters having the same chemical composition. In this paper a new approach is proposed for the characterization of iron ore sinters by a quantitative description of their morphology. The Texture Analyzer LEITZ T.A.S. is used for this purpose and such morphological parameters as sizes of microstructures and the size distribution of phases are measured on samples of sinters. The results indicate that these measurements can be correlated with the sinter quality.

Lewis E. Young, who will formally assume his duties as President of the AIME at the Annual Meeting in San Francisco in February 1949, was born in Topeka, Kansas, Oct. 1, 1878. Dr. Young received his engineering education at the Pennsylvania State College, where he received the degree of B.S. in Mining Engineering in 1900. In 1904 he received his E.M. degree from Iowa State College, and in 1915 a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. In 1947, the University of Missouri conferred on Dr. Young honoris causa the degree of Doctor of Engineering. His active career began in the educational field as instructor at Iowa State College, and following that, as professor of mining at the Colorado School of Mines, 1903-1907. While he was at Golden he launched hi: career as consulting mining engineer for various Western companies. Leaving the Colorado School of Mines, Dr. Young returned to Missouri, serving the University of Missouri as director of the School of Mines and Metallurgy at Rolla, 1907-1914. Leaving Missouri he went to the University of Illinois as assistant professor of business organization, 1915-1918, during which period he wrote exhaustive treatises on mine subsidence and mine taxation, which won for him the degree of Ph.D. before mentioned.

ENGINEERING education today is like a crazy quilt of somber wools and gaudy shoddy, chain-stitched on an academic assembly line, and sold at ever mounting prices to inexperienced youths for lifetime use. Each engineering school offers a half-dozen or so patterns with essentially the same skimpy wool content. Sales appeal is in the color of the shoddy, denoted by the hopeful adjectives chemical, civil and the like. This article is argument for an all wool product made by slow, careful handwork. Bluntly it proposes a thorough four-year undergraduate drill in fundamental science and general engineering empirics, leavened by continuing study of the third of the engineer's troubles: Man. It is not contended that existing methods of engineering education have failed to start men on the path to successful engineering practice (too many of you have started that way); rather, social conditions and the bounds of knowledge have changed tremendously, and corresponding alterations in the pattern of engineering education are overdue. We'll Teach the Specifics The first part of this contention is illustrated by excerpts from a letter received recently from an officer of one of the largest corporations: "We are interested in employing two or three outstanding young engineers to be placed on a special training program to develop them as design and construction engineers.... "We propose to put these men on a four-month indoctrination and orientation course after which they would be given job-training assignments for a period that will vary from about six months to about a year and a half depending upon the aptitudes, abilities and intelligence of the candidates.... "I am not too fussy about what kind of engineers the men might be insofar as academic courses are concerned. They could be.. . in almost any engineering classification.... We can furnish the additional training beyond the academic fundamentals. "The starting rate for these jobs would be $326 per month...." This letter is not unique; rather it is representative of a practice that has become common. It is industry's enforced response to the general refusal by young graduates to submit to union domination in order to gain operating experience at the labor level. The message to engineering schoolteachers is plain: You teach the fundamentals; we'll teach our practice and pay the graduate to learn it. The letter means to the student that time spent in school studying the specific practices of particular industries is waste compounded. The school can't give the equivalent of what industry teaches, wherefore industry will still demand apprenticeship. The student must pay for the specific instruction at school instead of being paid to take it later. And time-consuming specifics crowd out drill in basic scientific and technical subjects as well as liberal arts.

The Franklin Laboratory was designed mainly for the analysis of the products from the two concentrating mills situated at Franklin and Sterling Hill, the most important determinations being the zinc, iron, manganese, lime, moisture, and silica contents of the ores. Within the last 4 years, however, it has been found advisable to examine most of our supplies, and therefore additional space and equipment was allotted for the examination of such substances as oils, greases, soaps, alloys, fuels, paints, explosives, and water. The building as shown in elevation (Fig. 1) and plan (Fig. 2) consists of a main or routine laboratory, an experimental laboratory, a water analysis room, and the other accessories such as stock room, library, sampling and drying rooms, and office. The main laboratory is further divided into a balance room and zinc analysis room. As the greater part of our determinations are volumetric, good light is a very important factor and with this in view the interior malls of the building were constructed of white enameled brick laid in Keene cement. These also have the additional advantage that they give a clean and attractive appearance to the room. The windows are large, being 76 by 44 in. and even on very dark days the light is good throughout the whole laboratory. B. F. TiLLson*— The manifold difficulties of accurate anemometry in irregular sections of mine passageways, the irregular distributions of velocities in cross sections of the same, and the disturbing influence of the observer upon the air flow, all indicate an undesirable inaccuracy of results obtainable by any standardized method of traversing the section by an anemometer. It seems obvious that another, and simpler, method should be used to determine the volume of air flow in mine passages, namely: 1. At appropriate locations cement or calked framework rings should be installed permanently to equalize the irregularities of sectional contour and provide a place and means of attachment for a temporary cloth brattice which bears a rigid orifice. 2. The measurement of the velocity of air flow through the orifice may then be by anemometer or, preferably, by Pitot tube measurements of the differential pressures on both sides of the orifice in accordance with the standard practices available in engineering 1iterature. † The constants may be determined for various measuring positions in relation to the resulting "vena contracta." 3. The position of the person who makes the measurements is behind the brattice out of the air stream. The Pitot tube does not offer as disturbing an obstruction as the anemometer. A recording gauge may be employed to integrate fluctuations in air flow through that portion of the mine. No traverses are required because the reading may be at a single central point. An anemometer can be used with an orifice flow. The orifice will increase the air velocity at the measuring point, with correspondingly more accurate measurements where the normal air velocity through the passageway is low. Portable brattices might be devised with the cushioning rims which would seal against irregular rock surfaces where permanent rings were not available or feasible. The development by the Ventilation Committee of standard procedures and devices for the orifice measurement of the flow of mine ventilating air might be a desirable project for this coming year. C. M. Smith (author's reply)—Thank you for your discussion of my paper on underground anemometry. Your suggested method of measuring underground air flow is a novel one which might be applicable in some situations. It should be tested along with other suggested methods in any investigation of this subject. G. E. McElroy*—In spite of the adverse publicity that vane-anemometer methods of air measurement have had in the past and that contributed by the present paper, I endorse Mr. Erickovic's statement that anemometer traversing "has proved to be widely applicable, expeditious and simple" and add that available methods are accurate enough for the purposes for which they may be used. The fact that the great majority of minor mine officials assess relative changes in rates of air flow by comparison of crude vane-anemometer measurements, known to average 20 to 30 pct high, has no important bearing on this subject, because state inspection standards were based originally on such methods of air measurement. Federal inspection standards are based on actual rates of flow as determined by traversing, and interest in traversing methods is rapidly increasing. In considering traversing methods, three aspects are of major importance: (1) the absolute accuracy of calibrations; (2) the degree of interference with normal flow conditions introduced by traversing methods designed for accurate measurement by shaft-mounted instruments; and (3) the proper "method" factor to use for approximate measurements by hand-held instruments. With respect to absolute accuracy of calibrations, we have always placed reliance on calibrations made by the National Bureau of Standards, with which manufacturers' calibrations have usually agreed very closely. It is therefore particularly disturbing to find7 that calibrations made previous to June 1947 are presumably about 5 pct in error because of excessive registry caused by the thin flat plates on which anemometers were mounted for calibration. Velocities corrected for calibration have therefore averaged about 5 pct low in all probability. In this connection, it is interesting to note that an anemometer calibrated against Pitot-tube measurement by a single-point method in the Bureau of Mines experimental coal nine in 1923 indicated this same difference of about 5 pct and that the same instrument calibrated by a traversing method in a metal mine some months later indicated a difference in the same direction of about 4 pct. These results are reported by the Bureau of Mines.8 Regarding the degree of interference, or changes in velocity distribution, caused by the position of the observer's body in traversing operations, misconceptions seem to be especially prevalent, resulting in increasing advocacy of methods, such as the "clear section" method outlined in this paper, that cause just the type of interferences that they are designed to avoid. The degree of interference for any method may be gauged easily by a few experiments with a velocity-pressure gauge connected to a Pitot tube or with an indicating velocity meter such as the Velometer. In an experiment cited by McElroy and Richardson,# a decrease of 5 pct was noted at ten widths upstream from a 6-in. plank, whereas an observer's body at about the maximum practical distance of 6 ft downstream from the instrument is only about four widths away. In the Bureau of Standards paper previously mentioned, it is recommended that supports used in calibrations be at least 16 widths downstream. In practice, therefore, a downstream position of the observer is ruled out as far as accurate measurement is concerned. Operation of the anemometer by rigid shaft support from a point outside the section is seldom practicable; however, accurate results can be obtained, with the anemometer rigidly attached to a short shaft and held at arm's length, by an observer advancing across the traversed section while he faces the opposite wall and stands sideways to the current, provided that he keeps the instrument at least 3 ft away from his body at all times and traverses the entire section with it. If the traverse can be started with the observer in a side recess, the entire section can be covered in one operation. Normally, it would be covered in two half-sections. The presence of the observer's body does not, as is commonly supposed, increase the average velocity throughout the remaining part of the section. Rather, the velocities 1 to 2 ft on either side of his body are increased, but the distribution of velocities throughout the rest of the cross section remains normal, and a traverse made as stated gives a true average velocity for normal-flow conditions. Regarding the proper "method" factor for accounting for interference in the approximate methods of traversing with hand-held instruments, here again confusion prevails, for which the writer must assume some of the blame. THOUGH recent months have seen a rapid decline in lead-smelting activity and consequent uncertainty as to the future, the first half of the year showed progress in keeping with similar activity in other metals. Demand for scrap increased and various lead-bearing materials found their way to plants producing secondary lead. Some of these materials introduced complications into normal smelting procedure and were the cause of many conferences among plant officials attempting to find the most satisfactory method of treatment. If a blast furnace is to do itself justice it must be run with an open charge. Troubles inevitably result when materials are added to a charge which tighten it up and pre- vent free burning of the coke and con- sequent rapid smelting with a clean hearth This fact has long been recognized by plants producing primary lead, but only recently only it received the attention it deserves.

Mr. Chairman and Gentlemen: I accepted your Chairman's invitation to speak to a group of experts in this field with the greatest hesitation, because I know little or nothing about it. Certainly I can make no detailed suggestions, or suggest planning along very definite lines. You cannot do that sort of thing in a vacuum, and as I have suggested, my knowledge of the whole oil problem is next to nothing. It is possible that as a student of our public law, constitutional law particularly, for a number of years, I have acquired a perspective that may enable me to offer, for what they are worth, some general thoughts on these problems. I think that nothing in the whole field of law requires more definitely and clearly the functional approach than does the problem of a sound legal solution of the difficulties of the oil and gas industry. The industry is dealing with substances that are peculiar, and one must know how those substances act and what has been the history of the industry, to undertake to make anything like specific suggestions. I certainly am not qualified.

MEASUREMENTS of gravity with gravimeters have come into increased use in this country and abroad in the past five years. Probably 100 to 125 gravimeter parties are working in the United States alone. In oil exploration, gravimeter methods have relegated the gravity pendulum definitely to second place, if not third, and now closely rival and possibly surpass the torsion balance in many applications. Gravimeters have lately been applied in mining, although it is doubtful whether they will ever replace electrical or magnetic methods in this work. Notwithstanding the widespread application of gravimeters, there has been no article covering the entire field in the domestic or foreign literature. The purpose of this paper is to meet the demand for com-prehensive engineering information on the subject. The working principles of a number of gravimeters will be, illustrated and treated in relation to the action of corresponding seismometers and astatization methods. The mathematical discussion of theory has been confined to the most necessary fundamentals and been given in as ele-mentary form as possible. A description of calibration methods con-stitutes the last part of the paper. The symbols shown at the top of page 2 will be used in equations throughout the paper.

CONSIDERING the extent of the gold-fields of Nova Scotia, which occupy an area of 6000 to 7000 square miles, a few words as to the cost of extracting and reducing the ores may prove of interest. The veins are for the most part narrow, 4 to 12 inches being the usual width, while a 2-foot vein is considered a large one; but they offer many advantages, inasmuch as the ore is easily treated, wages are low, and machinery and supplies can be transported by water to within from 1 to 15 miles of the different mining districts. The Salmon River vein is a notable exception to the above rule as to width. It ranges from 4 to 20 feet in width. The Hall-Anderson of Fifteen-Mile Stream (where there are several veins) is another, which has proved to be from 3 to 4 feet in width. The ownership of all mining claims is retained by the Crown, but persons wishing to work them can lease as many unoccupied areas as they please for twenty-one years, with option of renewal, on the payment of two dollars for each area, and a royalty of 2 per cent. on all gold extracted. Each area consists of 150 Get along the lode and 250 feet across, upon which a certain amount of work must be done, which by recent law is reduced from one hundred to forty days' work for each area every year. Any person erecting in a district the first mill, having at least 8 stamps, and being at least 10 miles from any other mill, is entitled to a lease of 10 areas, free from advance-payment and from royalty, for twenty-one years. A record must be kept, and filed every quarter at the office of the Commissioner of Mines, of the total number of days' work done on the areas, and a monthly statement of the number of tons crushed, and the actual yield of gold. Gold-mining in Nova Scotia may be said to have commenced with the finding of a nugget of gold in a brook at Tangier in 1858. THIS paper describes the method of mining a steeply pitching anthracite seam on a heavy pitch in the Orchard vein in No. 1 Tunnel of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Co. The Orchard vein in the Nesquehoning district has a thickness of about 15 ft. on the level of the gangway, which is sufficient thickness for the gangway to be driven full width in coal. Above the gangway, the vein becomes thinner and near the surface is about 8 ft. thick. The coal is of good hard quality and carries a fairly good roof. The pitch of the vein is between 65° and 70°. Usually the breast-and-pillar method has been employed in the mining of the steeply pitching veins in this section. This method produced good results as far as the mining of the breast was concerned but the recovery of the pillar was difficult as to full extraction and expensive as regards costs. To recover these pillars after the breasts were driven, three methods were commonly employed; they were known as the pillar-breast method, pillar-skipping method, and pillar-chute method. The pillar-breast method consisted in putting a battery in one corner of the pillar (Fig. 1), coupling the manways A and B of the two adjacent breasts for two or three lengths ahead of the working face of the pillar being cut, and working the pillar as a breast. This method was used by the more skilled miners of the earlier days but has practically been abandoned. A slight variation of this method is used to some extent. In this case, the pillars are left wider than ordinarily and of sufficient width for the full-width breast to be driven in and a small pillar left on each side of the pillar breast between it and the regular breasts. With the completion of the "pillar breast," the ribs are drilled full of holes, loaded, and fired.

Serious disequilibria of a capital as well as an operating nature exist both in the producing and marketing departments, while problems in the former and to some degree the latter are complicated by political involvements. Attention has previously been directed to the unstabilizing influence of present proration formulas in stimulating unnec-essary drilling.1 While equilibrium in petroleum refining operations has been fairly well maintained in the past decade, examination of departures may prove fruitful. Economic analysis is the application of time and motion study to the functioning of management, rather than labor. Properly applied it may reveal changes in policies that would increase the utility of the properties and facilities of the industry for stockholders, employees and the public, while contributing a stabilizing influence to the general economy. The study of economic equilibrium is essentially one of measurement and interpretation, requiring adequate data and the development of a tech-nique of analysis that employs statistical and mathematical methods as a supplement to the broad descriptive phase of economics. Economic equilibrium in petroleum refining is a dual concept.
