The relationship between the geology of porphyry copper deposits and their processing performance is an area of interest. Being able to predict comminution properties of the ore from physical characteristics and geological descriptions would allow an increase in the precision of capital cost estimates, operating cost estimates and throughput rates. This geometallurgical approach would reduce the requirements for expensive comminution tests.As the comminution circuit is the highest capital cost item in the plant and a possible throughput bottleneck, understanding the variability in hardness within the orebody is critical. A geometallurgical model allows calculation of ore hardness values in mining blocks from ore characterisation data. This model subsequently uses a combination of simulation and power-based approaches to relate ore hardness and flotation feed size to grinding circuit throughput.This paper reviews the geometallurgical models developed for seven porphyry copper deposits and discusses the strengths and shortfalls of the methodology and similarities and differences between the different deposits.CITATION:Harbort, G J, Lam, K and Sola, C, 2013. Recent events have raised the issue of whether, and if so when and how, an explorer may gather data from a mining tenement or permit which is held under the relevant mining Act by another party. Two situations arise: that of the small operator who wishes to prospect, and if successful mark off, ground held by others by virtue of the local form of exploration permit; and that of a regional explorer who may wish to enter on to some one else's existing mining tenement within the region of interest. The legal situation varies from state to state. At present the broad consensus seems to be that, provided consent is given, small-scale prospecting on another's exploration permit is at least tolerated if not actually provided for by the relevant Act. Entry onto a granted tenement to carry out any form of exploration is, however, prohibited in all jurisdictions unless consent is given. Furthermore it would appear that the proposal and conclusion of a joint venture agreement places certain obligations upon the party proposing to carry out exploration. These conclusions apply where ground surveys are proposed. Where data acquisition is by aerial survey the situation is much less clear, principally it would appear, because up to now little thought has been given to it. If trespass applies at ground level, at what height does it cease to apply? Can aerial magnetometry or photography be classified as prospecting? Is there an obligation upon public authorities who carry out remote sensing to make data available to the holders of mining tenements within the surveyed areas? Moves are now afoot to address these and other considerations, and it would be in the interests of everyone if a national approach to the problem could be adopted from the beginning. Certain suggestions in this respect are put forward.

Dust mitigation has long been seen as nothing more than managing a nuisance issue, but the reality is that poor dust management can lead to one or more of the following negative consequences: an increased risk of safety incidents, lost revenue, reduced and possibly even lost licence to operate, regulatory intervention, high staff turnover and/or absenteeism and occupational health and safety (OH&S) issues. Dust mitigation and management is not a black art; rather it is a scientifically driven process that can provide an opportunity to increase profits, increase the companyÆs status as an excellent corporate citizen, enhance staff retention and reduce the safety risk profile of the operation.The way to achieve success in dust mitigation and control is to apply the scientific method to each problem that can arise and plague any operation by using current industry best practice. This method of dust problem-solving can be applied to dust issues arising from specific dust sources and locations. The dust sources can include wind impacting on stockpiles, open areas, tailings storage facilities, moving train and truck loads, vehicular traffic on roads, the operation of shovels, front end loaders, draglines and other equipment, as well as ore movement on conveyors.The solutions will come from a combination of deployment of dust collection equipment, dust and moisture monitoring equipment, the appropriate application of water and chemicals, the introduction and maintenance of appropriate barriers and the use of predictive data from local and public weather stations. The paradigm shift required is to view dust mitigation as one aspect of normal operational practice, not a ænice to haveÆ or æunnecessary expenseÆ as most operators currently view it. This attitude is becoming more important as more and more local communities oppose the development of mines. One of the reasons for this local opposition is the inevitable dusty environment that is usually associated with mining.Dust mitigation is not a significant expense if correctly designed and included into the system, either as part of the original design of the operation or as a brownfield installation after the fact. Indeed, there is always a loss of revenue associated with dustiness resulting from ore movement and avoiding this goes a long way to paying for any associated dust mitigating costs.CITATION:Visser, J, 2013. As part of a continuing study of mechanisms of breakage, the grinding at Nairne Pyrites Pty. Ltd. was traced by the addition of barytes and the results compared with parallel small scale laboratory tests. It was confirmed that the same basic mathematical functions described the behaviour of the full scale ball mill as those established in the small scale mill. However, an additional classification function was required to define the behaviour for the rod mill and was evaluated as a function of size from the experimental data. The classification and grinding of the pyrites ore was assessed from steady state size distributions around the circuit.

Gold placers can be difficult to locate in areas where tectonic activity and paleogeography have changed significantly since placer formation. Existing placer exploration models are useful in areas that have a relatively simple geological history, identifiable relationships with parent sources, or a history of placer mining. However, exploration becomes increasingly difficult in areas where tectonic activity and sedimentary recycling repeatedly redistribute the gold. Gold placers in the Waitaki River catchment, North Otago, New Zealand have no primary source within the catchment. During the Eocene placer gold was transported by a river ('Buster River') that flowed in a northeast direction from Central Otago toward a coastline at Maerewhenua, North Otago. This river and coastal system was inundated by marine transgression during the middle Tertiary. Since the Miocene its placer deposits have been uplifted and eroded and any links with parent sources have been severed. Changes in paleogeography resulted in local reconcentration and local dilution of placer gold in different areas in the Waitaki catchment. Thin veneers of old Waitaki River gravels (Kurow Gravels), containing gold recycled from the older placers, have been deposited unconformably on strath surfaces cut into Tertiary or older rocks. These gravels along with remnant Eocene fluvial and shallow marine strata provide potential placer exploration targets. Uplift and erosion of non-auriferous rocks in the Waitaki catchment to the west and north of the study area has resulted in considerable dilution of potential placer deposits downstream, especially in areas of gravel aggradation. We present a placer exploration model that is founded on answering fundamental questions pertaining to the paleogeography and geological history of the sediments associated with the placers.

The emerging coal seam gas (CSG) industry has the potential to provide a large-scale energy province for Queensland. Aquifer impacts and management of associated by-product water, both in terms of quantity and quality, are pivotal considerations for the development of a sustainable CSG industry.Legislative changes have been introduced to ensure that the CSG industry manages potential groundwater impacts and beneficial reuse of the by-product water to a level acceptable to both government and the community.The relevant new pieces of legislation covering petroleum and coal seam gas activities include the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004 (P&G Act), Petroleum and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2004 (POLA Act), the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Regulation 2004 and the Petroleum Regulation 2004. Other relevant legislation includes the Petroleum Act 1923 (Petroleum Act) and Part 7AA of the Mineral Resources Act 1989 (Coal Seam Gas Regime). The P&G Act introduces a full regime for managing water rights. This includes provisions for monitoring and reporting on the effects that the taking of underground water under petroleum tenure has on other bores in the area. The P&G Act also imposes a æmake good obligationÆ on petroleum tenure holders, which requires the restoration of bores affected by the taking of water or the payment of compensation. These provisions represent a significant departure from the Petroleum Act, which says very little about water rights and does not specify restrictions on the taking of water under petroleum tenure. This paper attempts to outline the requirements and obligations of the P&G Act for the CSG industry in terms of underground water rights, development impact assessments, aquifer trigger thresholds, monitoring and reporting requirements, as well as the make good obligations.

Syria has about 500 million ton deposit of minerals having 34 per cent iron content with alumina and silica as major impurities. Efforts were made to see the feasibility of concentration by four different methods involving washing, high intensity magnetic separation, reduction roasting and magnetic separation and acid leaching technique. It was observed that the reduction roasting with magnetic separation yields a concentrate with high iron (62.3 per cent) content without requiring water which is a scarce raw material in the region. The paper concludes that the detailed study may be made following this route to optimise the process Parameters.

IN previous discussions on the occurrence of gold in the Bendigo quartz reefs the opinion has been put forward that the gold shoots are primary concentrations in the quartz reefs during the period of vein-formation. The view has been based upon the constant features of the gold shoots in a large number of individual reefs, independent of their depth below the surface. These features include the mineral associations accompanying the gold, the appearance and association of the gold in the quartz, the similarity in all respects (excepting mineral content) between richly gold-bearing quartz and poor quartz, and the variations in mineral content in the reef apart from gold. The view has been supported by a relation of the gold shoots to faults, together with the dependence of the reefs on the existence of pre-mineral faulting. The secondary deposition of gold has only been observed in a few instances .associated with the younger monchiquite dykes, and is of no economic importance.

"This paper is focused on blasting activities undertaken as part of the Pacific Highway Upgrade – Tintenbar to Ewingsdale – project (T2E). This is a ‘priority 1’ Pacific Highway road construction project in New South Wales (NSW), to be completed by mid-2015 (weather permitting). T2E will provide approximately 17 km of dual carriageway road starting at the northern end of the Ballina bypass and extending to the Ewingsdale interchange, and will complete the existing dual carriageway road between Ballina and the NSW/Queensland border.Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) (formerly the Roads and Traffic Authority) is delivering the project on behalf of the NSW state and federal governments. In October 2011, RMS awarded a contract to Baulderstone Pty Ltd (now Lend Lease Engineering Pty Ltd – Lend Lease) to design and construct T2E. One of the key elements in this project is the St Helena Tunnel.In order to avoid the steep grades of St Helena Hill, eliminate a well-known accident black spot and maintain the aesthetics of the Byron hinterland escarpment, RMS and Lend Lease prepared designs to construct a 434 m long dual carriageway tunnel, 46 m below the ridge line of St Helena Hill. Lend Lease elected, where geotechnical conditions permitted, to use drill and blast methods to excavate the full tunnel profile, instead of traditional mechanical excavation techniques.Since all blasting locations (both inside and outside the tunnel) were in close proximity to nearby residents, the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure imposed strict air blast overpressure (airblast), ground vibration (vibration) limits and limited working hours. Both RMS and Lend Lease recognised that these restrictions meant that nearby residents may be exposed to blasting activities for longer than was necessary. As a result, after close consultation and agreement with the nearby residents, RMS applied successfully to the NSW Department of Planning to increase the airblast and vibration limits, as well as the working hours.Working under these new conditions, Lend Lease employed a range of best practice drill and blast technologies provided by both Orica Australia Pty Ltd and Atlas Copco Mining and Rock Excavation to improve the safety and efficiency of blasting activities and to minimise the potential negative impacts of the blasting works on affected residents. These technologies included: the use of a continuous environmental monitoring system to record the results of the blast events and provide quick and easy reporting to key stakeholders to address RMS specification requirements electronic detonators to enable accurate hole detonation timing for vibration compliance and to give project engineers the flexibility and precision to alter each design to suit the geological profile of each face the use of two software programs and advanced drill rigs to enable the efficient design of blasts, electronic transfer of designs to the drill rigs, as well as in-hole monitoring and recording of drilling performance the use of a specialised bulk emulsion system to deliver fully coupled bulk explosives into face blastholes to maximise fragmentation, and decoupled bulk explosives into perimeter blastholes, to reduce overbreak and deliver a cleaner profile.By taking a progressive approach towards the environmental restrictions and the work hours imposed, as well as utilising best practice blasting techniques, RMS and Lend Lease were able to blast with confidence and achieve their production deadlines and reduce the total cost of the project.Most importantly, RMS and Lend Lease were able to meet their environmental obligations and work constructively with the nearby residents to ensure that the blasting was undertaken as safely and efficiently as possible without delay or negative impact.CITATION:Dowling, M, Domotor, R and Miller, D, 2014. Australia is presently enjoying the fruits of a booming iron ore market. Expectations are that market strength will be supported in the short to medium term by increasing feedstock demands from steel mills, as world economies rebuild post-Covid-19. However, as cost and environmental pressures increase the longer-term market outlook will be dominated by product quality. The ‘flight to quality’ will place increasing demands on direct shipping ore miners as they compete to maintain their standing in the iron ore marketplace. China will progressively disengage from its dependence on Australian imports, leaving miners under increasing pressure to boost product quality and diversify outlets globally. Australia has vast deposits of low-grade magnetite ores located mainly in remote and arid regions of the continent. This paper proposes a dry grinding and magnetic separation process to produce premium concentrate grades from the low-grade ores, to assist in meeting future product quality demands. The premium grade concentrates could be either blended with lower quality direct shipping ores or marketed separately. The proposed dry concentration process involves the pairing of Vertical Roller Milling (VRM), a mature technology widely used in the cement industry, and Planar Magnetic Separation (PMS), a new methodology, which has been developed to the threshold of commercialisation by the private Australian company Cyclomag P/L. Two laboratory prototype planar magnetic separators with field strengths of 1800 gauss and 6000 gauss have been built and tested on a range of magnetite ore types over the past three years. In each case, following grinding to liberation sizes, a combination of roughing and cleaning operations has produced pellet grade concentrates. Vertical roller milling has competed successfully with conventional media milling in grinding cement clinker, limestone and blast furnace slags. A key advantage of dry VRM/PMS processing is its potential adaptability to stepwise modular development, which can minimise initial capital investment, while generating early revenue streams to cope with unpredictable market volatility.

THE township of Costerfield is situated in the parish of Costerfield, county of Dalhousie, and lies 6 miles east of Heathcote and 30 miles south-east of Bendigo. It is separated from Heathcote by the Mt. Ida Range, which forms the western boundary of the Silurian formation. It is situated at the head-waters of Tin-pot Creek, a small southerly tributary of the Deegay Ponds Creek, which flows east to the Goulburn River.The field was discovered in 1860 by two prospectors, Coster and Field, who were guided there by a shepherd, M Nicol Coster and Field had already discovered an antimony lode about three miles nearer Heathcote, when M Nicol offered to guide them to the larger outcrop. The main Costerfield reef at that time projected above the surface, and was white through oxidation, though the bluey sulphide showed on fracture. No alluvial gold of any consequence was obtained at Costerfield, but a little was obtained, at Redcastle, 7 miles to the north, and in some of the gullies to the east.Following its discovery there came a period of prosperity to Costerfield, while the mining operations were confined to the oxidized zone. The early success of mining at Costerfield was due to the gold values, and it is probable that the oxidized zone was secondarily enriched. The earliest available record of values is a crushing of Coster and Co. on the Antimony reef (now known as the Costerfield reef), when 200 tons from a depth of 70 ft. averaged 4 oz. per ton in July, 1861. At this time a crushing mill had not yet been erected at Costerfield, and the ore was carted and treated at Redcastle. The massive antimony ore, consisting of mixed oxides and sulphides, was separated by hand-picking as "marketable ore," and the remainder crushed for gold. A higher average is recorded from South Costerfield in September, 1861, when a 15' cwt. parcel...

Since the end of World War n, many important developments have taken place in the investigation of the phenomenon of brittle fracture in mild steel. Fractures in certain classes of welded ships, in welded bridges, penstocks, etc., focussed a great deal of attention on the interrelationships of design factors, service conditions, and steel quality on the generation of catastrophic failures.Much publicity has been given these major failures, and there is perhaps a tendency to forget that mild steel, under certain conditions, as well known to behave in a brittle fashion in a wide range of everyday engineering applications.For instance, many who are connected with the haulage and lifting of heavy loads will be familiar with the bright "crystalline" fractures of crane hooks and chains which sometimes follow sudden jarring; those concerned with the heavy pressing and shaping of steel plate will not be unaware that at times sudden brittle splits or tears will develop for no obvious reason in, say, rolled pipes or in dishings.In fact it will be evident upon reflection that in many cases the conditions which mild steel has to withstand during processing into an engineering part or structure are more severe than those it wili be called upon to endure during service. A major problem in open pit mine planning is to determine the optimum pit limit of the mine. The optimum pit limit is the one with maximum discounted net profit and satisfies technical conditions. A number of optimisation techniques have been proposed for determination of pit limits. Among these techniques, those based on graph theory are suitable to solve the three-dimensional (3D) problem. In this paper, two maximum flow methods named, Dinic's algorithm and Push-Relabel algorithm have been used to find the optimum pit limit of an iron ore mine. This method has been implemented in Gol-e-Gohar iron mine in south east of Iran in order to find the final pit limit. Issues, like properties of the mine and orebody, are studied. These properties include wall slope, sulfur and phosphor grade restrictions. The result shows that these properties have significant effect on the determined pit limit.

PT Indo Muro Kencana (PT IMK) is a surface gold and silver mine located in Mt. Muro area, Central Kalimantan province, Indonesia. The mining operations of multiple open pits using combination of excavator and haul truck is operated. This operation is performed in two shifts in a day. The articulated dump truck (ADT) with capacity of 40 t and 60 t deliver ore to the mineral processing plant and discard waste material to the waste dump area. Overall, PT IMK’s mining operation department is consisting of two sections, namely mining operation section and drill and blast section. Firstly, mine operation section is responsible to manage loading, hauling, pit service (mine dewatering, earthwork, road maintenance) and mine operation engineering. Secondly, drill and blast section is in charge to manage drilling and blasting (blast engineering, blasting operation, explosive permit and magazine or explosive storage). Additionally, conventional blasting method (ore-waste blasting) with non-electric initiation system is used and sleep blasting is undertaken as bulk explosive is buried for maximum two days. The first purpose of this paper is to elucidate about role of mining engineer in mining operation department (mining operation engineer and D&B engineer). At this point, mining operation engineering practice (fleet management system, production control and mining manpower management) and also blasting daily practice will be elucidated. Daily blasting practice is consisting of surface blast design, explosive engineering, sleep blast practice and the concept of scaled depth of burial to ensure a safe work environment in blasting activity. Next, the second purpose of this paper is to explore workforce evolution and future skills for mining engineer in surface mining operation. Furthermore, strategy to advance future skills such as mining continuous improvement program, training and skills development for mining engineer (mining operation engineer and D&B engineer) in order to develop their skills is also discussed. It is expected that in the future, these future mining leaders will become new mining leader, for instance mining superintendents, D&B superintendents and mining managers. In conclusion, it is clear that awareness about workforce evolution, professional development, training, skills development, mining economics awareness and mining continuous improvement program are essentially required as professional development for mining engineer (mining operation engineer and D&B engineer), in order to be commercially competitive in their future career and in order to be adapted with future workforce evolution in mining.

This paper describes a proposal to reopen the Sylvia gold mine for underground exploration and development for an initial production of 10 000 tpa. A combination of trackless mining equipment and railtrack would be utilised for development with ore extraction being carried out by undercut and fill methods. The use of the smallest LHD units for mucking, and rail track for the main haulage together with airleg drilling will form the basis for development and stoping. The proposal has been subjected to an environmental impact assessment report to evaluate the impacts of the proposal on the natural and social environment in the area.

A substantial proportion of current and historic West Coast gold production comes from deposits situated around the margins of æice ageÆ glaciers. Gold has been eroded and transported by glacial ice then deposited in till and outwash gravel. The interplay between fluvial and glacial processes, climate, basement geology, tectonic uplift, sediment supply and sea level dictates many aspects of the development of the West Coast landscape. The way in which the external forcing factors interact is crucial in determining the gold content of placer deposits in this region. The following is an outline of some of the factors that influence the gold distribution in vicinity of glacial margins.

Geometallurgical modelling of an orebody provides benefits to a mine by gaining a better understanding of the ore characteristics and how they affect the performance of the concentrator. With this knowledge, plant operating conditions can be adjusted to optimise throughput and recovery in advance of the arrival of particular ore types. Therefore, it is extremely important that the origin of the ore being processed is known as accurately as possible. Depending on the homogeneity of the ore characteristics, reliance on assumptions about stockpile residence times, scheduling and material handling can render the best geometallurgical models useless.The solution adopted at Agnico Eagle’s Kittilä mine was to utilise Metso SmartTags™ and in-house expertise to develop a system that continuously and accurately links geotechnical and lab data from the mine to the performance of the plant. This application presented several unique opportunities and challenges. For example, this was the first installation of a SmartTag™ system for geometallurgical modelling in an underground mine. Challenges included the fact that the system installation is routinely subjected to temperatures below -20°C.The system was installed and commissioned in early 2013 and has been operating continuously since. Kittilä has begun to see the benefits of the system, with an increased understanding of how different ores are processed in the concentrator. The zinc-lead lode at Rosebery, on the West coast of Tasmania, has a total length of over 4000 ft. It consists of five elongated lenses parallel to the foliation planes of the quartz sericite schist, and is situated at the junction of the quartz sericite schist and a thin belt of slate. The lenses consist of massive, fine grained sulphide ore, with small amounts of quartz, barite, sericite and chlorite, and they terminate in masses of low grade ore. The gangue minerals increase in quantity in the low grade ore which includes small quantities of the manganese garnet, spessartite. The schist walls of the lenses are in places impregnated with lode minerals to a degree sufficient to permit them to be regarded as economic ore.The ore-bodies have developed from incoming mineral solutions by the replacement of the quartz sericite schist and are localised where the ore solutions have been confined by a relatively impervious slate band. The early stages of replacement of the schists are signified by the development of pyritic bands which are succeeded by a strong development of zinc blende. With ptogressive crystallisation, the character of the mineral solutions gradually changed and the development of galena, and its associated bournonite, became more important in the later stages.Remnants of the replaced schist, in the form of isolated wisps and schlieren of sericite and chlorite, are present in the ore body, more noticeably in the pyritic specimens. An important feature of the ore is the association of small ogllantities of gold with trahedrite.
