I find that during the short time I have been in this district, the majority of boilers are, and have been, receiving very bad usage owing to the difficulties which they have to contend against, viz., oil and bad water. Oil on the heating surface of a boiler is of a highly dangerous nature inasmuch as it allows the surface to become overheated, owing to the water not coming into direct contact with the plates, and it naturally follows that when the crown sheets of a flue or firebox become overheated, you lose a considerable amount of the strength of the plate, and the flue or crown comes down. Referring to the oil question, I find that too much care cannot or exercised on the part of engine drivers in order to minimise as much as possible the internal lubrication of the various engines under their control. For I consider that it is here that the most of the trouble is caused. My reasons for stating such to be the case, are:-That the majority of enginedrivers before coming to this field have been used to driving engines that have been exhausting into the atmosphere, and probably they have been taught that it is far better to use a little extra lubrication than to have a hot bearing. So far so good. But one thing that must not be overlooked is that on these fields the conditions are altered in this respect, as the majority of engines in this district are not exhausting into the atmosphere, but are condensing their exhaust steam and using the water so condensed for feed purposes.

Within the mining industry there is a growing trend of placing inexperienced technical people into positions of responsibility beyond their readiness. Their responsibilities often include providing the fundamental basis for decision-making: the resource model or even the daily grade control estimates. Whilst software continues to make the processes more accessible, the thinking and rationale for selecting parameters still requires control rather than auto-piloting. Operators run these systems in virtual isolation, and have limited immediate access to experts. Beyond the stress of the professional burden are the increased risks to the mining operations and overall project success.While many experienced experts recall being thrown in the deep end, the relative isolation from experts coupled with the gravity of professional burden before readiness, is less familiar. Many recall in intimate detail the experts who gave them direction, assisted them along the way and even helped them claw out of inadvertent mistakes. Experienced professionals all have a responsibility to enable capability across the generations, to ease the burden and to mitigate the risks.This paper provides an outline of how mentoring as an on-the-job professional development process can be structured to more fully enable success of a mentoring program. The past 100 years the mining industry can be characterised by a focus on increasing financial returns often to the detriment of social, human, manufactured and environmental capitals. Despite the sustainable development principles promoted by the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), the Equator Principles and the African Mining Vision, which should have enhanced project promoters’ ‘licence to operate’ within a host community or nation, the industry has often failed to integrate proven innovations and best practices that enhance sustainability outcomes for mineral resource projects. This failure has led to delays, the abandonment of projects, with value destroyed for promoters, governments, host community and investors.The paper will outline the application of proven innovations, Enterprise Optimisation (EO), and Sustainable Operations (SUSOP®), during the pre-feasibility phase of a project. By determining the value of each capital before and after the application of proven innovations, the presentation will outline how and where value can be created across all five capitals over the life of a project or operation.The paper will demonstrate how the application of proven innovations significantly transforms the value-proposition of a mineral resource project or operation by generating additional value across all of the five capitals, reducing project risk, thus generating value for all stakeholders.CITATION:Jones, M, 2015. Cooling of coal mines in the Bowen Basin, characterised by steep geothermal gradient, is presently achieved mostly through rental surface bulk air cooling in summer months. This paper argues that future mines will be required to focus their cooling resources more intensively to manage a challenging thermal environment where virgin coal temperatures of over 50¦C at a depth of 500 m are expected. Currently, mine cooling systems are employed to maintain the wet bulb temperatures (WBT) to below 27¦C at which point the risks of heat stroke or other heat-related issues are manageable. The capacities of these systems are in the range of 6 MWR to 10 MWR. The relationship between high working temperature environments and injury frequency rates is well established. Therefore, provision of appropriate cooling strategies and understanding their optimum performance and suitability are important to Australian coal mines of the future. This paper evaluates the underground temperature profiles of deep, gassy coal mines with propensity for spontaneous combustion and proposes the long-term cooling pathways to effectively manage thermal hazards. Thermodynamic modelling is performed on a longwall face and includes air leakage effects from goaf streams at various locations along the longwall face. The strategy summarises the application of underground bulk air cooling, chilled water sprays on the shearer and the resulting temperature profiles. Considering the new mining projects planned for the Bowen Basin region, a review of implementable cooling strategies such as mid-gate mobile bulk air coolers (BACs), spot coolers, underground bulk air cooling and the use of chilled water to enhance the positional efficiency of cooling plants, are discussed in this paper. The Bentley underground mine, which is located 60km north of Leonora, Western Australia, is owned and operated by Round Oak Minerals Pty Limited. A high-grade Zn-Cu Volcanogenic Massive Sulphide (VMS) orebody, Bentley was discovered in 2008 with production commencing in 2012. Long-hole open stoping is employed to mine the steeply dipping ore body, and in recent years the Avoca method has been adopted. This requires all development in a particular area of the mine to be completed prior to stoping commencing in a bottom up sequence. Voids are commonly backfilled with loose Run-of-Mine (ROM) waste loose rockfill (LRF); or alternatively cemented rockfill (CRF) can be used. Stopes in the 3860 AOS and 3900 AOS panels were located below previously extracted Avoca zones, with LRF situated immediately above them. These high-grade stopes were originally designed with rib and sill pillars to maintain control of the existing backfill during extraction. Due to changing factors over time, including mining economics, alternative options to achieve full extraction of the stopes were reviewed, including: • Mining small successive full height stopes which would involve drawing a blanket of LRF down with the extracted ore (stoping under waste); • Stabilisation of the existing LRF above the stopes and implementing a primary/secondary stoping sequence, with the primary stopes backfilled using a cement fill. An assessment of these options was undertaken which determined that the second full extraction method was the most beneficial to the operation, and could be achieved using a cement grout (Minova’s FB200 grout) to stabilise the LRF in conjunction with implementing a sequence where the primary stopes would be backfilled with cemented aggregate fill (CAF). Footwall drives were developed adjacent to the rockfilled stopes, allowing for the installation of horizontal grouting conduits, as well as providing access to the top of the planned 3860 and 3900 level stopes for the placement of CAF. An interval at the base of the previously rockfilled stopes was grouted at multiple horizons to achieve the required thickness, with a comprehensive quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) process undertaken. Primary stopes were CAF backfilled via an arrangement of downhole winzes, linking the top of primary stopes to cross-cuts developed off the associated footwall drives. CAF was delivered underground through an open reticulation network that was extended to the specific levels. Overall the successful implementation of the revised mining method effectively increased ore recovery while maintaining control of overbreak and dilution, providing significant financial upside. This was achieved while maintaining effective controls in light of the changes to the risk profile. Stabilisation of the existing rockfill has allowed the extraction of stopes to full height, including the originally designed sill pillars, representing an average 23% increase in ore tonnes on the initial design, with dilution from the stope crowns averaging less than 1%. The use of CAF in association with primary/secondary stoping, eliminating the need for rib pillars, has yielded an average 47% increase in ore tonnes compared to the base case mine design.

In the first 20 years of the 21st century, just over 20 per cent of Australian mineral exploration expenditure was dedicated to iron ore, totalling >A$8 billion and >30 million metres of drilling (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2021). Improvements in the cost, efficiency, safety, reliability and data quality of drilling have the potential to deliver significant productivity improvements, increasing the probability of discovery and reducing the time from discovery to mining. Currently in its third year of research, Mineral Exploration Cooperative Research Centre (MinEx CRC) is focused on a new set of exploration tools and new ways to deploy those tools which recognise the fundamental importance of collecting quantity and quality data from the subsurface, to enable exploration success for all minerals, including iron ore. MinEx CRC is focused on developing more productive, safer and environmentally friendly drilling methods to discover and drill-out deposits. This includes pioneering work on Coil Tube (CT) drilling technology and innovations in Diamond and Reverse Circulation (RC) drilling techniques aimed at improved drilling optimisation and automation. In parallel, MinEx is developing new technologies for collecting data whilst drilling. This is being undertaken in four separate industry-led projects utilising geophysical, seismic, downhole analytical and 3-dimensional (3D) modelling improvements. A National Drilling Initiative (NDI) is also underway, with two drilling programs completed in 2020. The NDI is a world-first collaboration of Geological Surveys, researchers and industry, which undertakes drilling in under-explored areas of potential mineral wealth in Australia and provides a test-bed for new mineral exploration technologies.

Just as geophysics, in the form of 3D seismic and wireline logging, plays a key role in petroleum reservoir management, so too will geophysics play an important role in mining of coal, metals, and minerals in the 21 st century. The commercial and social imperatives driving greater use of geophysics are reduced costs, increased revenues, and enhanced safety. In short, superior utilisation of capital and management of risks. In relatively undeformed sedimentary environments it is possible to adapt petroleum-style 3D reflection seismic to image mines. This has been demonstrated most impressively in the Witwatersrand. Anglo-American, for example, completed a $1 million 3D seismic survey at Western Deeps in order to site a new $300 million shaft with confidence. Likewise, 3D seismic has gained rapid acceptance at Australian coal mines in recent years. Encouraged by these successes, metalliferous mining companies are supporting research in Canada and Australia, as well as South Africa, to adapt 3D seismic for more highly structured, metamorphic terranes. Because the mining industry is far more diverse than the petroleum industry in terms of commodities and geological environments, 3D seismic is not always cost-effective. A plethora of other geophysical techniques can be applied, many of which are employed in mineral exploration. Mine applications of geophysics differ from traditional exploration applications in two main ways: time scales and length scales are shorter, and boreholes are more plentiful. Borehole geophysical techniques therefore play a more significant role, both for logging and imaging. Logging systems detail the variations of in situ physical properties down the borehole at scales measured in centimetres, while geophysical imaging techniques can map features located tens or even hundreds of metres from the sensors. While geologists tend to think of boreholes in terms of chips and core, geophysicists perceive them first and foremost as access paths for instruments. Borehole logging has been employed at iron and coal mines for decades, mainly to accurately define ore boundaries in delineation holes. In base metal mines, Outokumpu implemented logging widely for orebody delineation in percussion holes in the 1980s. The benefit was a direct cost-saving, arising from substitution of core drilling with percussion drilling plus borehole logging. The practice has since spread to other companies. INCO, for example, defines nickel boundaries in blast holes at Sudbury using conductivity logs. The benefits are in the form of reduced dilution and enhanced ore recovery, flowing from a more accurate mine model. Density, natural gamma radiation, magnetic susceptibility, and conductivity are the principal metalliferous mine logging parameters because they can be recorded in both dry and water-filled holes. Sonic velocity is the premier geotechnical logging parameter, given its sensitivity to rock strength, stress, porosity, and degree of fracturing. Sonic is recorded routinely in exploration and geotechnical holes at coal mines. With the advent of slimline dipmeter, full waveform sonic, and optical and acoustic scanner tools, the role of borehole logging in geotechnical evaluations is expanding. Monitoring of strain and micro-seismic activity enhances safety during mine production. While qualitative interpretation of logs is adequate for stratigraphic identification or definition of boundaries, a wealth of quantitative information, eg density, can be derived from properly calibrated, repeatable geophysical logs. Moreover, geophysical logs can sometimes serve as surrogates for geochemical assays, and not only for magnetite and uranium. At OutokumpuÆs Kemi chromite mine, for example, gamma-gamma logging provides the basis for grade control. By reducing reliance on assaying, three benefits can be realised: reduced reliance on core drilling; lower core handling and assaying costs; and shorter turn-around times. Conventional downhole EM and borehole magnetics are used for near-mine exploration, and for ground sterilisation. Inco has enjoyed considerable success with borehole UTEM in the Sudbury Basin, for example, and Geopeko has applied three-component borehole magnetics successfully in the Tennant Creek area. Electrical techniques such as applied potential and magnetometric resistivity (MMR) are also finding application at mines. For higher resolution, borehole seismic, radio imaging, and radar have been invoked, with varying degrees of success, to delineate orebodies and map structures, or to geotechnically characterise the rock mass and identify hazards. Success mapping nickel sulphide shoots with borehole radar has been reported by WMC at Kambalda. There are no universal geophysical panaceas, and each mine imposes different geological, logistical, and economic constraints. Geophysics will not always be cost-effective. However, the greatest single impediment to expanded use of geophysics at mines has been the low level of awareness of geophysics on the part of most mine geologists, engineers, and managers and, equally, the limited understanding of mine geology and engineering exhibited by the majority of geophysicists. This myopia will be remembered as a 20th century affliction! Blue Sky areas for mine geophysics in the next ten years include integration of geophysical data acquisition with drilling, enhanced grade estimation and rock mass characterisation, and the incorporation of geophysical information into mine models using geostatistical techniques. All these advances will be predicated on an expansion of petrophysical knowledge.

The relationships between Aboriginal Traditional Owners and mining companies have often been mired in dispute, particularly since the High Court Mabo decision and the Native Title Act of 1993. In the Pilbara region, Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) impacts the traditional country of 12 Aboriginal Traditional Owner/language groups. Over the past 12 years the company and the Traditional Owners have negotiated and settled several significant land use agreements including the Yandi Land Use Agreement over the Yandicoogina mine in 1997, between Hamersley Iron (now Rio Tinto Iron Ore) and three language groups û the Bunjima, Nyapaili and Innawonga people and the Eastern Guruma Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) of 2006. These substantive agreements are now being followed by a new generation of region wide ILUAs which are close to conclusion. Arising from these regional agreements is a new framework for engagement which has been informed by the implementation of the previous agreements in the Pilbara and across the Rio Tinto group of companies. They are driven by both a company desire to have a consistent approach to engaging with Traditional Owners and the Traditional Owners wanting to have a similarly transparent and consistent standard of performance by the company in implementing the agreements which can deliver improved employment, cultural heritage engagement and direct and indirect benefits for the life of mining by the company. During the past three years the growth in the Pilbara, Western Australia brought new opportunities with people flocking to the region for employment flowing from the mining boom. Housing was at a premium and FIFO (fly-in, fly-out employment arrangements) was developed as a method to manage the general growth and demand for skills. Despite the recent down turn in the world economy since September 2008, which has reduced demand for minerals, the Pilbara continues to enjoy high levels of employment and as a result there is still significant pressure on housing and services provision. Although there has been vast economic growth in the Pilbara not only by mining companies but also oil and gas companies, the 2006 census data indicated that the direct benefits of improved employment, business development and engagement in the mainstream economy continued to exclude Aboriginal people. Indigenous people constitute a significant proportion of the population in the Pilbara region, some 6000 people û currently 14 per cent of the population rising to 18 per cent by 2015 û yet they remain at the bottom of the socioeconomic scale. More than 40 years of mining has returned relatively little to this group of people who are the permanent residents of the region and are connected through their traditional culture to this country (Taylor and Scambary, 2005). Ensuring local Aboriginal participation in the mainstream economy has been a challenge for resource companies, Traditional Owners and local residents in the Pilbara. The case study explores the relationship between a mining company û Rio Tinto Iron Ore and the Traditional Owners of the Pilbara. It examines two projects that have been developed to engage Indigenous people in the development of their region and through regional representation and business development to build a sustainable future for themselves and their future generations and at the same time ensure social cohesion to support social licence to operate. The case study also examines the process that was followed by Rio Tinto Iron Ore and its operations in undertaking a regional agreement for land access, participation and the integration of local Indigenous people into their business and the local economy.

The prediction of acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD) from mine waste materials is critically important during all stages of the mine value chain. However, to determine such geoenvironmental characteristics static and kinetic testing of individual waste units must be performed on representative samples. The importance of sample selection cannot be underestimated; it is the single most critical aspect of any geoenvironmental investigation. Poor sampling techniques and inadequate sample selection will contribute to excessive variance, difficulties in interpretation and incorrect assessment. By undertaking mesotextural characterisation based on hyperspectral mineralogical data (with sulfur assay data if available), opportunities to improve sampling strategies are presented. Such data will inform the selection of samples for low-cost total sulfur, paste pH and geoenvironmental logging, which collectively will allow for accurate AMD forecasting and improved sampling practices to be achieved. Once sampled, robust quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) protocols must be developed where the use of international certified reference standards become obligatory. This is currently not practised, resulting in inter-laboratory discrepancies when undertaking waste classification. Further improvements in geoenvironmental characterisation testing lies in the adoption of blended static testing protocols, whereby blends of waste materials can be efficiently tested so as to give an early forecast as to whether they will produce acidic or metal-laden drainage. Such information is integral in developing a waste schedule that will allow for a non-acid forming waste landform to be constructed right from the start of the operational phase. Ultimately, improvements in this discipline lie in technological innovations with regards to mineralogical characterisation, and by offering geoscience and minerals engineering students a competent education in the discipline. Collectively, this will empower a step-change in AMD prediction and waste handling, and will make the realisation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals a reality, rather than a dream.CITATION:Parbhakar-Fox, A and Dominy, S C, 2017. Gold has been known and mined in Australia for over 150 years. It occurs and is mined in all States and the Northern Territory. In the past 30 years approximately 8300 t of gold has been mined and gold exports have contributed over $106 billion to the Australian economy. In the first three quarters of the Australian financial year 2006 - 07 (ending 30 June 2007) gold exports were valued at $7.3 billion, which was 13 per cent of the value of all minerals exported and five per cent of AustraliaÆs total goods and services exports over the period. Clearly gold has been and remains a very important component of the Australian economy.

There is much debate on the Competent Persons qualifying criteria for providing classified resource estimates for public reporting. The CRIRSCO family of codes including the JORC Code, SAMREC, PERC and NI43–101, require Competent Persons to have at least five years ‘relevant’ experience and belong to professional bodies. These codes provide further, albeit vague, guidelines to assist individuals with their personal decision to take on the mantle of ‘Competent Person’. There is a risk, however, that these qualifying criteria can result in ill-prepared Competent Persons whose actions and recommendations would undermine their own reputation and that of the organisations that employ them; the integrity of the profession and the principles based reporting systems; as well as the stability of stock markets that rely on these estimates.Based on doctoral study on the development of professional competency within the mining industry, this paper presents an evaluation of the suitability of the current qualifying criteria as well as an analysis of alternative criteria. The research included a series of interviews with industry experts and an online survey of resource geologists. Semi-structured interviews provided a sense of experts’ expectations and interpretation of the current definition of ‘Competent Person’. The comprehensive online survey included a self-assessment, a series of situational questions designed to evaluate responses to typical resource geology scenarios and a set of open-ended questions relating to factors contributing to competency development.A summary of the data analysis, interpretation of the results and a set of recommendations for revised ‘Competent Person’ qualifying criteria are presented. This paper contributes to the conversation on what makes a person suitably qualified to report classified resource estimates and provides practical targets that can be used in the professional development of resource geologists.CITATION:Coombes, J, 2014. The sampling time, the costs and its quality are the three factors that determine the best method of drilling in mineral exploration. The two principal methods of reverse circulation (RC) and diamond core drilling are often used in combination by mine operators. RC is used for drilling shallow holes and in-pit grade control, and core drilling for deeper holes to identify future resources. The RC method is faster and more flexible than coring and provides virtually uncontaminated cuttings (ranges from dust to 25 mm chips) to the surface cyclone suitable for geochemical anomalies. The diamond coring produces core samples to increase the level of geological knowledge and the 3D extension and distribution of the orebody. However, both of these methods are subjected to certain limitations and inefficiencies in reaching deeper depths and drilling complex hole geometries. Examples of such shortcomings include the inability to provide enough air pressure for RC drilling and high friction between drill pipe and the hole wall in diamond core drilling.Considering that delivering large volume of reliable samples from deep zones to the surface in shortest possible time is of paramount importance in mineral exploration, and assuming that obtaining core samples over whole overburden is not always essential, then drilling small size holes as fast as possible and delivering the small chip samples to the surface would be a good alternative with several advantages over conventional drilling methods for deep hard rocks mineral exploration. As a result, the use of coiled tube (CT) drilling technology has been proposed recently for such applications. CT is a continuous length of ductile steel or composite tube stored and transported on a large reel; and allows fast drilling by eliminating the connection time and providing continuous circulation during drilling. This enables quick access to the zone of interest to collect the cuttings or obtain core samples. CT is advantageous particularly in drilling directional boreholes and multi-laterals. In this paper, feasibility of using CT delivering reliable samples is discussed for deep mineral exploration. This paper puts the view that, for one gold deposit in Victoria at least, the Australasian Code for the Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources is severely deficient. The author questions whether or not the Code constrains the proper dissemination of information relevant to resource valuation. The author offers a view about the estimation of inferred resources, and provides data believed pertinent to the proper valuation of Ballarat Goldfields Ltd Ballarat East Project.

Societal expectations about how the industry operates and treats its people will be a key driver in the development of the Australian mining industry over the next 20 - 30 years (Moffat, Mason and Littleboy, 2009). Understanding these expectations will be critical in maintaining what much of the minerals industry calls its 'social licence to operate', or its public acceptance or approval. Yet what constitutes this social licence is poorly articulated, with little published research exploring the concept at a local operational level or at the national level in Australia or internationally. This research aimed to explore the societal expectations of the mining industry in Australia and test a participatory methodology to articulate them. Three workshops were conducted with a sample of 24 members of the 'Australian voting public' to explore community objectives for the onshore exploration and mining industry, and the underlying expectations for how the industry should operate in the future. Qualitative analysis of this data revealed three overarching objectives for the onshore mining industry held by participants. They thought that the industry should: advance Australia's national interests (including social well-being); minimise environmental impact, and; act in a socially responsible manner. Within each of these three key themes, or objectives, a number of tensions were evident in the views of participants regarding the trade-offs they are willing to make to secure economic benefit from mining, as well as the basic conditions for socially acceptable mining. These data provide an insight into the conditions for a national social licence in Australia for the mining industry, and the means for its realisation.

Broken Hill metallurgists have been responsible for some of the most important developments in mineral processing technology. These occurred mainly in two periods, 1902 - 15 and 1955 - 70. Mineral flotation was developed as an industrial process during the first period and this happened in two stages, the recovery of zinc minerals from the tailings dump accumulated during the gravity concentration of the oxidised ores and the selective recovery of galena and marmatite during flotation of the primary ores. During the second period fast accurate analytical procedures were developed to provide rapid assessment of process performance, and new means of controlling the process were devised which improved throughputs, grades and recoveries. These technological successes were due to the skills of the metallurgists and the commitment of the companies. They brought large financial returns. They were achieved under difficult circumstance. There are important lessons to be learnt from these successes.

Open pit mining commenced at Lihir Island in 1997 and is undertaken using a conventional drill, blast, load, haul methodology. Unique challenges at the operation include an active geothermal system, a well-developed advanced argillic blanket in the upper portions of the orebody and high rainfall. Grade control is effective utilising routine blast cone sampling. While this provides ‘just in time’ grade information for mill blending, there are opportunities to improve scheduling of mill feed, based on material classification of clay types and sulfur grades. The nature of the clay can impact on the handling properties while the sulfur grade is an important guide for autoclave blending, required for refractory gold. Drilling below the pit floor introduces hazards from the identified geothermal field. A trial Reverse Circulation (RC) program was implemented with the aim of defining four benches below the active mining bench. A comprehensive risk analysis, including the geothermal environment, was undertaken to design a drill collaring procedure with pressure diversion equipment. Operator exposure was minimised through ‘nil on foot’ principles with the driller located in an onboard cab, utilising remote rod handling. Sampling personnel operate in an elevated platform with access to protective covering. Samples from blastholes and the RC holes are processed at two site laboratories. One provides conventional Au fire assays with additional Infrared Combustion (Leco style) S analysis. The second laboratory collects material classification details from portable XRF (pXRF), near infra-red spectrometry (ASD) and Hardness Indicator Testing (HIT). An existing workflow was updated by the site to deal with the additional samples and ensure production ‘turn around times’ were retained for short-term planning. This required some changes to drying temperatures, compositing and screen sizing for the material classification. All results from the two laboratories are loaded into a centralised acQuire database for estimation into a single block model that informs the 13 week medium term planning (MTP) schedule. This paper describes some of the logistical issues faced when drilling in a geothermal area. It also discusses the selection and commissioning Quality Assurance of the sampling equipment and drill rig. Integration of the resulting assay data with existing resource models is also explained.

This paper presents a waste rock treatment and rehabilitation program conducted at a metaliferous mine site in northern New South Wales from 2000–2013. It updates findings from 2005 for Program #1 (which examined acidity, leachable metals and tree growth in a control and three treated areas of waste rock) and includes new results for Program #2 (which examined acidity, plant uptake of metals and trace elements and tree growth in a control and four treated areas compared to undisturbed background levels) and Program?#3 (which examined the treatment and revegetation of submerged mine tailings and an exposed tailings beach).Program #1 showed low soil pH in the control area remained unchanged from years 1–14, and soil pH in the limed and capped areas was initially increased but fell back to starting levels within 12 months and remained low for 14 years. In contrast, soil pH in the Terra B area resulted in soil high pH immediately after treatment and increased in years six and 14 without further treatment. Tree height and density in 2005 and again in 2013 indicated acidity in the control, limed and capped areas suppressed tree height and density; however, in the Terra B area, revegetation in 2013 was comparable to undisturbed forest. Outcomes in the control, biosolids and three Terra B areas in Program #2 were similar to those observed in Program #1.Program #3 showed the submerged and exposed tailings initially had low pH and high concentrations of total and leachable metals before treatment, but these became non-leachable after treatment with Terra B. Revegetation was achieved on the tailings beach, with almost uniform colonisation of bulrush and common reed, along with bottlebrush and golden wattle; a variety of reptiles have also been observed on the revegetated tailings beach, along with migrating ducks, spoonbills and grebes.CITATION:Fergusson, L, Blair, D and Scutts, T, ?2014. "Tyres consumption is one of the costliest branches of the operation in a truck-based haulage mine. Off-the-road (OTR) tyres working within undesirable conditions have a considerable negative impact on the whole mine’s productivity. Only the rolling resistance due to underinflated tyres could increase truck fuel consumption by 15 per cent. The impact of other conditions such as road surface quality and temperature are difficult to estimate. Tyre management is a demanding activity that requires a high level of coordination between maintenance and production departments.The project is aimed to develop a smart decision tool to assist mine managers to optimise tyre resources. By identifying factors that have significant impact on tyres, managers are able to take timely action to mitigate undesirable working conditions.The proposed model utilises real-time tyre measurement of pressure, temperature, speed, load, deformation and surface profile to report tyre performance in terms of tonne-kilometre-per-hour (TKPH) and tyre longevity. Both indicators are permanently monitored in order to trigger a warning system designed to keep tyres under optimal working conditions.An interactive database ‘Octo-Mine’ wirelessly receives records from a programmable logic controller (PLC) deployed on the truck. PLC records are the integration of multiple sensor signals with a time stamp. Octo-Mine utilises real-time and historical tyre records to generate online performance and longevity reports, as well as preventative and corrective tyre maintenance scheduling, by comparing current tyre status with established standards.To validate the model, the prototype database was populated with hypothetical data to simulate ideal working conditions subject to comparison with real field observations. Additionally, a laser-based technology prototype device successfully measured a new 9 mm tyre tread and a 60 000 km rolled tyre tread in the laboratory.In conclusion, optimal tyre management contributes not only to reduction of tyre waste but also to truck energy efficiency. This project is a first step in proving these benefits under real field conditions. The Grande Côte Mineral Sands Deposit (GCMSP) is located on a coastal mobile dune system in Senegal on the west coast of Africa. Senegal is a stable, democratic republic, having gained its independence from France in 1960. It has a population of about 12.5 million people. The dunes begin about 25 km north-east of Dakar, the capital city of Senegal, and extend northwards for more than 140 km. The mineralised dune system averages about 2 km wide with some areas extending to up to 4.5 km wide.Mineral Deposits limited (MDL), a Melbourne-based company with over 60 years operational experience in mineral sand mining in Australia, holds, through its Senegalese subsidiary MDL Senegal SARL (MDLS), a 25-year Mining Concession covering the deposits. The main heavy mineral (HM) areas identified to date are, from south to north, Mboro, Fass Boye, Diogo and Lompoul. Within the Mining Concession there is potential to identify additional resources beyond the limits of present drilling. The dunes are mobile or semi fixed, pale yellow in colour and overlie older white marine sands. The dunes range between 5 m and 30 m in height and the mineralised zones, which are essentially flat-lying, average around 15 m in thickness. The mineralisation consists, principally of ilmenite with accessory zircon, rutile and leucoxene. Zircon and ilmenite are the main commodities of interest.Independent consultants AMC estimated mineral resources for the four main deposits in 2006 of 1330 Mt of sand averaging 2.0 per cent HM at a cut-off grade of 1.5 per cent HM. At a cut-off grade of one per cent the resources were 3200 Mt averaging 1.5 per cent HM. All of the estimate was classified as Inferred Resources under the 2004 Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (JORC, 2004).Subsequent completion of infill drilling, sampling and assaying of the initial mining area, centred at Diogo, was completed in 2008, enabling a final dredge path to be designed and ore reserves estimated, based on a JORC compliant Measured and Indicated Mineral Resource. Infill drilling is continuing in the Lompoul and the results of this campaign will be included in the JORC compliant data base by AMC in April 2010 to enable the 15 per cent year dredge path and mine plan to be finalised.Development studies have shown that the project can be optimised as a dredging operation, with mineralised sand being treated in a conventional floating spiral preconcentrator, wet concentrator and dry mineral separation plant. Engineering work now substantially completed by Ausenco Limited (Ausenco) has developed the combination of some existing plant from MDL’s past operations, and new plant for the complete process from dredging to final product separation and grading. Testwork on a series of bulk samples has determined that the project can yield a high quality zircon product and an ilmenite product along with minor rutile and leucoxene.Work to date indicates a likely output of around 80 000 t of zircon in various quality streams (Primary, Secondary, Standard and Foundry Grades), around 550 000 t of ilmenite plus around 15000 t of rutile and around 12 000 t of leucoxene/secondary ilmenite. Planned zircon output would represent around 7per cent of the total world production, which would make the GCZ&IP a significant producer on a world scale.The studies have indicated capital costs to be in the range of US$400 M total operating cost (after completion of ramp-up) of around US$50 M - $55 M/a. Revenue is expected to be in the range $127 M - $157 M/a.

Two case studies are given: the Mt Owen Mine in the Hunter Valley, NSW and the South Walker Creek Mine in the Bowen Basin, Queensland.
