The recent paper by Bain (1981) contains an unfortunate, and potentially misleading typographic error. On page 9, second paragraph, Bain states that, "some samples of drill core from the (Candlow) Formation ... contain up to 90 ppm gold and 2 000 ppm arsenic". The gold value should read 90 ppb. In fact, in the original version of the paper (Bain, 1980), the gold value quoted was actually 60 ppb.Bain also refers briefly to some geochemical data which is attributed to me, and which I feel require some clarification.In addition, the paper contains some factual errors relating to the occurrence of carbonate and potential host rocks to Carlin-type gold deposits in the Candlow Formation.

I would like to build on the keynote address given by Peter Stoker to the Fourth International Mining Geology Conference (2000) entitled æThe Role of the Mine GeologistÆ. He concluded that à the important aspects of the professional contribution of a mine geoscientist to a mine operation include: The geoscientists prime task is to maximise the profitable extraction of the ore deposit on which they are working û that is to add value. They must maintain and develop their own expertise. By ensuring a truly professional approach to all they do, they will provide the best service to the community, to their company or client, their shareholders and their family or close associates. In that process they will also assist in protecting themselves in this increasing litigious world. I intend to build on these points and, in particular to expand on what it really means to take a truly professional approach to mine geology. Mine geology is different from other forms of geological practice. As a mine geologist you are the advocate for the orebody. After all the orebody is the one thing that is unchangeable.

China’s mineral deposits are the result of metallogenic processes associated with the geodynamic evolution of tectonic plates and eventual amalgamation into their modern configuration. The principal tectonic provinces of China comprise the North China Craton, Yangtze Craton, Cathaysia Craton, Tarim block, Altay-Tianshan-Hinggan orogens (part of the Central Asian Orogenic Bel), Central China orogens, Songpan-Ganze orogen and Alpine-Himalayan fold belts, which are part of the huge Tethysides. These tectonic elements are testimony to a complex geological history spanning more than 3000 million years. This contribution will focus on selected areas of the Altay-Tianshan, the fold belts surrounding the North China Craton and Yangtze Craton and the mineral systems along the Ailaoshan-Red River fault zone. The mining industry is cyclical, but those are more than normal business cycles. In the early 2000s the industry saw the start of China as a game changer for the mining industry which lead to catch phrases like ‘stronger for longer’ and even ‘stronger forever’. Enter the global financial crises and the more recent slow-down in the Chinese economy and confidence that the future is bright has dimmed! This paper looks at the long-term forces that are likely to impact the global mining sector and explain why the industry has an excellent future. However, the industry is not without its many challenges and while demand may be in a prolonged step change, the ability to generate profits will depend on the fitness of each asset and company.The author also discusses the hated terms of ‘boom’ and ‘bust’ and considers how the industry can reduce them, but normally exacerbates them. The ability of the junior sector to raise funds being a primary example and one that remains closed to all but the very best exploration assets. As in other countries, gold mining inNew Zealand has been cyclic in character. Looking at these cycles may provide insights as to what may occur in the future and that is the basis for this study.   New Zealand has experienced four gold mining cycles. The first began in 1857, peaked in 1866 and terminated in 1890. This cycle was characterised by alluvial gold mining by individuals and small groups. This is referred to as the Labour Led cycle. The second cycle began in 1890 and reached its peak in 1906 and terminated in 1929. This cycle was characterised by the use of dredges in alluvial gold mining and was also the peak of hard rock mining. This cycle is referred to as the Technology Led Cycle. The third cycle peaked in 1940. This cycle was far less significant than the previous cycles, arising out of the depression when the unemployed embarked on small scale alluvial mining. This overprinted the continuing decline that occurred after 1906. This cycle is here referred to as the Depression Overprint Cycle.   The fourth cycle began in 1984 when production began to climb rapidly from a very low base. The growth in production was spurred by rising gold prices in the early 1980s resulting in relatively low grade gold-bearing alluvial ground becoming economic. But in the 1990s, production from the new hardrock mines in Coromandel and Otago has overshadowed alluvial production. This cycle is here referred to as the Price Led cycle.   What are the future prospects for gold in New Zealand? Although there are many factors involved, this will be largely determined by two factors; firstly, continued access to prospective gold-bearing properties, and secondly, the price of gold. Based on these factors, three future industry scenarios have been developed. The first of these is industry collapse, in which access to prospective property is constrained and prices mayor may not weaken. The second is industry consolidation, in which the available ground is accumulated by a small number of large companies who can use economies of scale to weather price fluctuations. The third scenario is industry growth, in which access to prospective ground is constrained in environmentally sensitive areas but is otherwise relatively unconstrained. Efficient companies are allowed to work in a policy and economic framework that allows them to make a major contribution to the economy.   While the industry cannot control these critical factors, a good knowledge of the positive role gold mining could play in the future economy may provide a framework by which the access issue, in particular, may be addressed from a balanced perspective.

As well as providing structural information, the study emphasizes the effects of weathering on the interpretation of magnetic data.

Historically mining engineers haven't spent enough time planning waste dumps, but waste movement costs often outweigh ore haulage costs. There is a real incentive to plan waste dumps right the first time to minimise rehandle and final closure costs. At BHP Billiton Iron Ore there has been an increasing sophistication in waste dump design and they are becoming as important as the pit design. Closure landforms are now included in mining studies. Closure is embedded in the business planning cycle. The results from the recent life of mine study at Whaleback is a case in point where a base case of the shortest hauls with no closure constraints was compared against a closure case. A properly planned and executed waste plan revealed that no rehandle was required and haulage costs were eight per cent less if closure design implementation was carried out concurrent with mining. At cessation of mining the landforms were such that decommissioning of critical acid rock drainage dams and coverage of exposed pyrite areas could occur straight away, without the need for additional rehandle.  The paper also covers design and scheduling elements of waste design both in-pit and ex-pit, management of potentially acid forming material (PAF) and trends in PAF management and designing for final landform closure. This paper illustrates that there is value in terms of costs savings, sustainable outcomes and reputation if the mine planners are involved in the closure planning process.

This work presents design features of an innovative in-line mixing helical (coiled) reactor for flocculation and flotation as a solid-liquid separation process for suspended particles (including liquid droplets). The device has been named flocs generator reactor (FGR), a compact system whereby the flocculation of particles is assisted by the kinetic energy transfer from the hydraulic flow through the reactor and/or by the injection of microbubbles (30 - 70 ¦m). The flow mixing presented a plug flow regime with a low dispersion degree, promoting the required hydrodynamic conditions to disperse the polymer flocculant (cationic polyacrylamide) and to generate æstrongÆ flocs of Fe(OH)3 or clays (as colloidal model systems) with aggregation using an anionic polymer, Al2(SO4)3 and poly aluminium chloride (PAC), and oil emulsions destabilisation with a high molecular weight cationic polymer. The solid-liquid separation of the flocs was then achieved either by settling or by flotation with microbubbles. This paper discusses advances in this new in-line flocculation-rapid flotation device to remove æaerated aggregatesÆ, aggregates with entrained and entrapped bubbles. Studies were carried out with different models of FGRs (varying the length:volume ratio) and process efficiency (mainly kinetics) evaluated as a function of polymer concentration and some operating parameters, namely, feed flow-rate, air:solids ratio and residence time. Results showed that the aerated flocs are readily floated with rising rates in the order of 120 mh-1, values higher than those obtained for the settling of the non-aerated flocs (18 - 24 mh-1). The FGR requires short residence times and generates dense, well structured flocs (with a mass fractal dimension, dF of about three) which withstand high shear forces. Mechanisms involved appear to include small bubble formation and their rapid occlusion (entrapment) within flocs, nucleation of bubbles at floc/water interfaces, polymer coiling as a result of æsalting outÆ effects at the aqueous/air interface and plug flow type of mixing (flocculation). Successful examples of emulsified oil and solids removal from water are shown and because in all cases high efficiencies were obtained (>90 per cent removal). Due to the high process efficiency and high loading capacity shown, the FGR appears to have good potential as an in-line flotation-separator device in applications requiring high rate solid-liquid or liquid-liquid separations.

Seismic systems are a tool for the monitoring and forecasting the rock mass response to excavation. Common issues encountered at mine site audits and reviews are: how to design an effective seismic system, implementation of the design, interpretation of seismic source results and understanding the reliability of the seismic source. These issues are often a function of several items including: • Experience of site personnel in undertaking seismic system design. • Personnel not envisioning multiple phases of system expansion to understand system robustness issues. • System design/expansion occurring in response to damaging seismic activity rather than planned expansion of a system • The mine access development is often localised in comparison to the total orebody being mined hence, planning sensors in longholes in advance of development rather than in short holes close to development will improve the three-dimensional aspect of the network. • Limited site processing of the seismic event data, hence engineers do not see the uncertainty associated with event location, size, source and system layout. Mine site users require a framework to appreciate the challenges and limitations in locating large events. For example, event locations are given as precise measurements (to the nearest centimetre) whereas the volume of deformation resulting in the event often has dimensions of tens of metres or more (as defined by the source radius). A stronger awareness of the uncertainty of rock mass yield within large seismic sources will assist site users in the interpretation of rock mass damage. The encountered design and implementation errors are reviewed and discussed with a practical set of rules presented to provide a robust seismic system that provides consistent results and increases the user’s understanding of uncertainty in source location and size. The authors’ experience across multiple mine sites, seismic systems and damaging seismic events over a 30 year period has been summarised into practical rules for site personnel of all experience levels.

Partitioning behaviour studies for -particles in the 250 to 1,000 micron size range at. the Curragh coal preparation plant are presented. Plant surveys were conducted to compare the partitioning efficiencies of dense medium cyclones and froth flotation. The aim was to assess the potential for improving yield of coal by directing more of the top size of flotation feed material to dense medium cyclones. ovel mass balancing and model fitting NI procedures were used. While flotation offers high yield of low ash particles smaller than 500 microns, dense medium cyclone rejection .of high ash particles larger than 250 microns is superior. These strengths of the two processes are turned to good advantage by the use or desliming sieve bends which tend to perform some density separation on the'size fractions of interest, directing lower ash material to froth flotation than to the dense medium cyclones.

Lead smelter slags, produced during the last century in quantities ofmillions of tonnes at Lavrion, Greece, have recently been used in theconstruction of Lavrion harbour. In order to evaluate the geochemicalstability of slags and assess their environmental impact on the aquatic environment, a detailed study on lead leachability under conditions that simulate subsea environments was carried out. Leaching experiments using magnesium chloride solutions under mild temperature conditions were conducted and the effect of main parameters on lead solubility was examined. Furthermore, kinetic analysis on the experimental results was performed. Based on the results, lead dissolution increases by increasing the reaction time, magnesium chloride concentration in the bulk solution and temperature, whereas it decreases by increasing the slags particle size. The reaction order was found to be approximately 0.5 at the initial extraction stages and the activation energy value from the Arrhenius plot was estimated to 29.8 KJ/mole. Diagnostic equations applied to all the experimental data reveal that lead dissolution is mainly controlled by diffusion through the ferrosilicate matrix of the slag particles, which is in accordance with the low activation energy value. The JanderÆs diffusion equation [1-(1-a)1/3]2=kt was proposed as the equation representing the reaction of lead dissolution from slags using magnesium chloride solutions.

The stability of a raise bore is often assessed using the rock mass classification system published by McCracken and Stacey as a modification of the Q system. Often the assessment is done using a spreadsheet to manipulate geotechnical log(s) of boreholes. This paper discusses the inherent difficulties with this approach. Recent work by others to provide guidelines to the classification system is discussed. A recent example of the design and raise bore performance at Macraes Gold Mine, New Zealand is presented. A key issue is that a visual assessment of the drill core and/or core photographs is necessary to æground-truthÆ the classification.

The United States (US) coal mining industry has been working under comprehensive planning, operating and rehabilitation regulatory requirements for nearly 35 years. The public desire for environmental protection during mining and rehabilitation following mining to achieve post-mining land use and sustainability goals has been a major factor and continues to influence the process. Mining companies have evolved operations to achieve outcomes that address the desired goals and regulatory requirements cost-effectively and successfully. Over the 35 year regulatory period, requirements for more diverse topography, specialised revegetation communities, landform stability and assured sustainability have increased and become more complex. These challenges are effectively met by maximising integration of mine planning and operating with the rehabilitation process. Rehabilitation is then implemented in a more timely and efficient manner and with effective results that achieve desired outcomes, commonly with added value. Peabody Energy (Peabody) has taken this approach in its US operations and this paper discusses an integrated approach and illustrates learnings and results with examples from several of its western US operations.CITATION:Pfannenstiel, V, 2012. The Manto Verde mine is found in the coastal ranges of the Atacama desert, 1000 km north of Santiago, Chile . The deposit is a fault-breccia specularite-oxide copper mineralisation hosted by the Jurassic andesites of La Negra Formation. It is located in a tensional fault that joins twoparallel arms of the Atacama Fault. The mine is in feasibility study: reserves are of the order of 60 Mt at 0.9 wt per cent soluble copper; mining will be undertaken at a rate of 11 000 tpd utilising an open pit and the ore will be heap-leached with acidified sea water, with copper recovery and by SX/EW.

Both machines have enhanced the production capabilities and quality control of the Roscommon comminuition circuit and they will provide efficient and reliable crushing well into the next century.

The Telfer main dome open pit is operated by Newcrest Mining Limited at a current production rate of 50 Mt/a from a pit dimension compromising 2 km strike length, 1 km width and 250 m depth. As part of the refeasibility of the Telfer operation undertaken early this decade, Newcrest identified that an underground sublevel cave (SLC) operation along with an increased scale of open pit would support a new plant targeting the processing of gold and copper ore at 17 Mt/a rates. The SLC was initiated in late 2006 and broke into the open pit in late 2009. This situation is unique across the mining industry where a cave breakthrough was planned and occurred within an active large open pit operation. The SLC broke though into the west side of the Main Dome open pit into a specially prepared bench that was left at the 5384 RL of cut-back stage 3. A main haulage ramp is within 100 m from the edge of the cave breakthrough zone and this ramp passes down to the active levels which are progressing toward the 5200 RL. This paper presents insight into the mine planning and risk management associated with continued operation of the open pit operation while an active SLC breaks through. The cave breakthrough presents unique areas for risk management as there is potential for rapid propagation and subsidence. To support the undertaking, mine design and major hazard management planning has been carried out. Focus areas include; dual ramp system design, preloading the breakthrough area, monitoring of cave propagation and air gap using a seismic system and deep hole extensometers, wall stability and subsidence monitoring using radar and prism systems, and key trigger and response planning.

A key driver to the success of a tunnelling project (the project) is the management of hydrogeological risk. The hydrogeological risk, if not managed, may cause significant impacts on the overall performance of the project. Impacts may include groundwater quality impairment due to contaminant transport and acid drainage from disturbed geology to groundwater, and groundwater lowering. The groundwater lowering and quality impairment may cause tunnel failure, with consequences such as injury to humans, as well as reduced property and environmental values, potentially costing millions of dollars to sponsors of the project. Depending on the nature of the contaminants and level of hydraulic connection of bedrock fracture along the length of tunnel, the contaminant transport may reduce structural strength of the tunnel due to corrosive action of contaminants such as acid drainage. The groundwater lowering can lead to varying degrees of ground settlement, posing threat of tunnel collapse. The management of hydrogeological risk includes:detection of potential pathways for contaminants into and around the tunnel,identification of factors responsible for the lowering of groundwater, and development of strategic measures to control groundwater lowering and contaminant transport. The paper presents an in-house hydrogeological risk management model named Vedanta-THRM (tunnel hydrogeological risk management). The model uses Risk Management Standard AS/NZS 4360:2004 (Standards Australia, 2004), Pressure State Response framework developed by Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development, and Interaction Matrices. The Vedanta-THRM identifies important characteristics, processes and events of potential hydrogeological risk and develops control measures for managing hydrogeological risk throughout the life cycle of the project. The Vedanta-THRM was applied for a project in the early stages of planning and found to be useful in assessing, evaluating and reducing the hydrogeological risk in a managed approach that potentially increased the performance of the project. The application results also provided management options for use by project sponsors and insurance industry, which included tunnel risk financing options and options for equity investors to choose among various returns under different tunnel credit ratings.

The design and optimisation of mineral flotation circuits is currently performed using a combination of laboratory, pilot plant and full scale testing. Owing to the variable nature of flotation circuits and the complex nature of the flotation process, it is difficult to interpret the data collected from flotation testwork. JKSimFloat is a computer modelling package which is being developed to interpret flotation testwork data collected at the various stages of the mining cycle. The parameters derived from the program can be used to assess potential circuit configurations in both the design of new flotation circuits and in the refinement of existing operations. The aim of this paper is to outline the modelling methodology used in JKSimFloat and to outline how it can be used effectively to model data collected from either the laboratory, the pilot plant or the existing flotation circuit. The use of flotation model parameters in circuit evaluation will be demonstrated via the use of a case study based on data collected from ComincoÆs Red Dog lead flotation circuit.

The East West Link road tunnels are proposed to provide a connection between the CityLink toll road and the Eastern Freeway north of the Melbourne CBD. The alignment passes from Moonee Ponds valley beneath the Upfield Line railway cutting, Royal Park, the historic Melbourne Cemetery and beneath Alexander Parade rising to an eastern portal at Hoddle Street. The western (Royal Park) part of the alignment passes through the folded and faulted Silurian Melbourne Formation, which has been subjected to deep weathering since the Triassic.The Melbourne Formation in the Royal Park area is mainly characterised by interbedded sequences of siltstone and fine-grained sandstone. The beds are often graded and a clear boundary between the siltstone and fine-grained sandstone rock can be difficult to distinguish. Variation in lithology and the presence of structural geological features such as folds and faults have resulted in an irregular weathering profile within the Silurian rock; nonetheless the formation typically becomes less weathered with depth.Due to difficulties in obtaining reliable laboratory strength and stiffness relationships with weathering grade, in situ testing methods such as downhole shear wave velocity and high-quality pressuremeter testing are a useful aid to assessing appropriate geotechnical parameters for design.This paper presents an analysis of the variation in shear modulus of the Melbourne Formation, determined at small-strain (from downhole seismic data) and at ‘engineering scale’ strain (from pressuremeter tests) for extremely weathered (XW), highly weathered (HW) and moderately weathered (MW) rock. Estimates of small strain shear modulus (Go) obtained a range between 400 to 3400 MPa for these weathering grades. By comparison against the pressuremeter test data, reduction factors to be applied to these Go values to estimate shear moduli at engineering strain levels typically range between 0.10 and 0.35.The downhole geophysics undertaken in the Royal Park boreholes also suggests that there is an inversion in velocity between approximately 15 and 27?m depth below the top of the formation. This is thought to be related to the effects deep Plio-Pleistocene weathering, iron cementation of joints and increasing frequency of ‘non-healed’ joints in the transition from MW to slightly weathered (SW) rock.CITATION:Macklin, S, Schult, M, Terzic, Z and Chu, D, 2014. The distribution of mineral deposits within northwestern North America (Alaska, Yukon, and northern British Columbia) allows for an in-depth examination of the metallogenic patterns of a growing continental margin. A more complete understanding of the tectonic evolution of this part of the Pacific Rim, achieved over the last 15 to 20 years, now allows for the placement of ore systems into a well-defined plate tectonic framework. Ore deposits older than about 185 Ma represent hydrothermal systems that were active in the platform/shelf environment of ancestral North AmericaÆs miogeocline or hydrothermal systems developed in oceanic arcs and continental fragments more distal to the craton. These include important SEDEX, VMS, and pre-accretionary porphyry deposits. In contrast, most mineral deposits younger than about 185 Ma were formed within the growing Cordilleran orogen, as terranes were accreted to the continental margin during interactions between the North America and Pacific/Farallon/Kula plates. Such syn- to post-accretionary mineralised systems include many large lode gold and porphyry/skarn systems.
