"Metal prices are central to a mineral investment decision and have a profound impact on the financial performance of companies in the mining industry. At its most basic level, metal prices are influenced by the disequilibrium between international metal volume supply and demand. That is, the commodity price is a regulator that equates international metal supply and demand where inventories act as a buffer between the emergence of this disequilibrium and its dissolution through a price change.From this viewpoint, mining companies are required to forecast metal and bulk commodity prices when evaluating minerals projects through discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis. While supply-demand models are instructive, many companies use historical prices, spot prices, futures/forward pricing and consensus opinion (or a combination of all of these) to develop price forecasts.This paper discusses the definition, fundamentals and differences between futures/forward and consensus pricing and the appropriateness of each in a DCF model for mine project economic evaluation.Our results demonstrate that great care is required when using either futures/forward or consensus pricing and that the decision to use one rather than the other requires consideration of other important elements in the DCF model (ie the risk-adjusted discount rate).CITATION:Martinez Tipe, L A, McKibben, J and Barry, S, 2016. Single wavelength fluorescence sensing has been used in the preconcentration of ores for many years in situations where it is typically specific to the mineral of interest. Examples of fluorescence sensing include the sorting of diamonds in diamond mines and the sorting of scheelite in tungsten ores. However, the number of minerals that show useful single wavelength fluorescence properties in the visible spectrum is relatively small, so the application of fluorescence sensing is currently limited to niche application in the minerals industry. Recent developments at the University of Adelaide have focussed upon extending fluorescence signal measurements into the infrared spectrum, as well as investigating multi-wavelength fluorescence known as up-conversion fluorescence. These techniques may not only significantly increase the number of minerals that exhibit fluorescence properties suitable for both identification and sensor-based sorting, but also provide mineral-specific signatures of higher quality than previously attainable. This paper details the research work carried out by the University of Adelaide and funded by CRC ORE to develop a mineral-specific fluorescence sensor. The sensor targets two fluorine bearing minerals, fluorite and fluorapatite, that are common in many base metal ores such as porphyry copper ores and silver/lead/zinc ores. Fluorine is a known penalty element in mineral products derived from these ores, so mining companies need to monitor and control the amount of fluorine in their final product to keep it below commercially agreed specifications. Currently there is no real time sensor capable of monitoring fluorine in the ore feed so monitoring and control is carried out using time-consuming standard sampling and off-line laboratory measurements. The development and application of a real time fluorine sensor will enable the mining companies to monitor and control fluorine levels in the plant, greatly reducing the time and cost associated with producing their mineral concentrates within the prescribed specifications.

As greater amounts of fine iron ore concentrates enter the marketplace, new investments in iron ore pelletising capacity are inevitable to deliver these concentrates to steel industry consumers. When investors assess the two well-proven pelletising technologies, the straight grate and grate-kiln, the most appropriate choice may not be immediately evident. Certain technical, market and site-specific factors will favour one technology over the other; investors need to be aware and understand these factors in order to make the best investment decision. Hatch has compared the merits of both technologies regarding plant configuration; type of iron ore processed; energy consumption and flexibility to use a variety of fuels; ability to produce the required pellet quality; required plant capacity and scale; operating and capital costs and environmental performance. The Tom's Gully gold mine is located 90km ESE from Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia. The orebody is the auriferous portion of a large sulphide rich quartz reef, hosted in the Wildman Siltstone Formation of the Early Proterozoic Pine Creek Inlier, at the NH extremity of the Mount Bundey granite-syenite intrusion. It was discovered by Carpentaria Exploration Company Pty Ltd on November 17th, 1986, using stream sediment geochemistry.The reef is 800m long at surface, strikes E-H and dips approximately 300 to the south, becoming progressively less steep. Only the eastern half of the reef is auriferous, with gold grades averaging 9 g/t plus anomalous silver, base metals and arsenic.The enclosing siltstone is a dark grey banded carbonaceous and pyritic metapelite, showing areenschist regional metamorphism and thermal effects from the adjacent pluton. Local folding plunging gently SW is cut by a south dipping fault, probably a thrust, in which the reef was later formed at about the time of the granitic intrusion. The base metal ore from the hanging wall of White's orebody at Rum Jungle, N.T., is composed of copper and oth.er sulphides in a rock described as a phyllite,.which consists essentially of micaceous minerals with a little graphite.Fast selective flotation was obtained in acid circuit below pH 3·5. In neutral or alkaline circuit flotation was generally slow and selectivity very poor due to the ready flotation of part of the sericite. However, it was found that fast selective flotation could be obtained in neutral or alkaline circuit by either of two treatment methods following pre-conditioning in acid circuit; firstly by decanting or filtering a substantial part of the circuit liquor, and secondly by neutralizing with soda ash or lime, providing the collector was added before neutralizing. Otherwise pre-conditioning with acid brought about no improvement whatever.To explain this behaviour, three possible reasons for the flotation of part of the sericite are examined. There is evidence that some sericite floats because of thin films of either sulphides or graphite, but it seems likely such particles will float under all the conditions investigated.On the other hand, if it is assumed that part of the sericite floats because it is activated by metallic ions derived from the circuit water, a reasonable explanation can be given for the variations in flotation behaviour.INTRODUCTIONWhite's uranium orebody at Rum Jungle, N.T., sixty miles south of Darwin, is mined and treated by Territory Enterprises Pty. Grade Engineering®, integrated across the mine value chain, has a pivotal role to play in achieving step change reductions in energy and water usage in mine operations. High levels of gangue rejection in the mine can significantly improve mineral head grades and overall productivity. A highly successful example is described at the Minera San Cristóbal (MSC) operation. The nature of the mineralisation in their “intrusive” ore domains in particular has facilitated high rejection rates (75 % of the mass), with significant upgrading of metal to the “accepts” streams (equating to a 2.6 times upgrade in the intrinsic Nett Smelter Return). Results from a series of production trials have confirmed these strong upgrades, resulting in the transformation of mineralised “marginal wastes” to high grade ore feedstocks. If new approaches to more energy and water efficient comminution and separation technologies can also realise gangue rejection at finer sizes in the concentrator, then preconcentration strategies across the value chain also offer the promise of no wet tailings treatment facilities and greatly reduced volumes of waste streams. This “No Tails” strategy is discussed, along with the integrated technologies needed to realise its effect. The work suggests a pathway and insights of a sustainable future for the Minerals Industry, unconstrained by Energy and Water, along with no requirement to produce problematic disposal streams. This strategy has the potential to significantly reposition the social, environmental, financial, and regulatory context of existing and new mining opportunities.

The empirical McCracken and Stacey stability and risk assessment method has been in use for more than 20 years to assess geotechnical stability issues for raise bored shafts. The methodology has been applied with various levels of success. Increasingly, trends in mining and civil tunnelling have been towards larger diameter, single pass, raise bored shafts to rapidly provide means of ventilation, material movement (ore passes), or emergency egress. Identifying and assessing potentially problematic zones before raise boring commences can allow for appropriate risk-based decisions on construction, or to investigate alternative solutions. The implementation of a proactive solution to raising through an identified weak zone is preferred to the application of an engineered solution to an area subjected to substantial instability or failure. Methods for investigating potentially problematic areas are discussed in this paper based on AMC’s benchmarking data. Proactive investigation programmes resulting from these investigations are also discussed. Previous publications discussing the benchmarking data have concentrated on Australian case studies. Increased efforts and recent updates have been made to expand the database to include international case studies. This has provided further refinement of lower bound ‘raise bore rock quality index’ (QR) values, and various rock mass parameters for stability assessments. Industry, especially extractive industry, must now give serious attention to the impact its operations have on the natural environment and on the economic, social, and cultural context within which it operates.   While this obligation is statutorily managed, there has been a recent shift towards a culture of self responsibility. Industry is now talking about earning its ôsocial licence to operateö and the importance of maintaining the ôtriple bottom lineö, thus adding environmental and social performance to the usual financial criteria used to measure organisational performance. The social context within which companies operate has also become more sensitive with industry responding to a growing public expectation that it conduct itself in a way that strives for sustainability by operating and developing in a way that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.   There are glowing accounts of industries engaging and collaborating with the communities within which they are based. In amongst these are also some disasters which result from cultural assumptions, industry created dependencies and the failure to attain community buy-in despite significant investment by the industry involved.   There are also remarkable stories of communities, and action groups within communities, being a significant catalyst for positive change of their natural, cultural and social environment. In amongst these stories there are also accounts of long and drawn out battles; adversarial situations where no one wins; a litany of mistrust, tricks and tactics, with the better resourced party ultimately achieving its primary objectives at the cost of the other (and at the cost of any potential fruitful, mutual relationships).   So what makes the difference in achieving the positive rather than negative outcomes? The answer lies in the way the outcomes are achieved. Building relationships based on good communication, respect for divergent views, mutual understanding, and the development of trust and empathy, makes it possible to identify shared goals and objectives that best meet the needs of all parties.   Research indicates the mining industry is making good progress in developing policy and commitment to community development and engagement but that, ætranslating commitments into improved practices at the site level remains one of the industryÆs toughest challengesÆ. (Australian Government - Community Engagement and Development Handbook October 2006 @ page 49.)   This paper considers the merits of a process of community collaboration and what it has to offer in terms of meeting that challenge.

This paper has been developed for æThe Race for SpaceÆ conference. It ranges over various aspects, all of which are within the umbrella of marketing. The question is posed because many engineers, tunnelling and other specialisations, frequently demonstrate an unwillingness to embrace marketing. The accurate reply is probably à ænot an engineer!Æ The paper identifies some of the possible explanations for this reply. The vast majority of the themes, ideas and principles are based on more than 25 years actual experience for the author with Engineers, Tunnelling and other disciplines. "Société le Nickel exploits the Dôme lateritic nickel orebody at its Tiébaghi operations in New Caledonia. The site geology has an obvious bearing on recovery and metallurgical performance, with controls that are extremely complex at all scales, including lithology, oxydo-reduction conditions, mineralogy and multivariate geochemistry. In this context, establishing an adapted recoverable resource estimation method that is efficient and transparent proves an interesting challenge. The method must address the key notions of: support effect – the exploration data set can only warrant the estimation of large panels of 20 × 20 × 3 m3 that are much larger than the selective mining units (SMUs) of 5 × 5 × 3 m3 information effect – the selection at the production stage uses estimates based on information that is much denser than that available for mine planning.The problem is rendered more complex in this type of deposit by the fact that the additive variables used for the estimation (metal accumulation and ore tonnage) are not the ones used to establish the selection at the mining stage (ie the nickel grade of SMUs, which is the ratio of accumulation on tonnage). Eventually, the selection criteria not only involve Ni grades, but also other elements such as Al2O3, Fe2O3, MgO and SiO2.The solution presented in this paper is to construct an SMU multivariate simulation in the saprolitic horizon and construct an efficient post-processing aimed at producing multivariate recoverable resource estimates. The efficiency constraints imposed by the number of blocks to be simulated (1.5 million) lead to resorting to direct block simulations. The underlying multivariate discrete Gaussian model, which had its validity tested beforehand, is put to good use to mimic the selection process that happens at the mining stage by offering the ability to simulate a composite value located at random within each block.The paper also presents the application of a scenario reduction algorithm to pick a representative subset of a few simulations to help appraise the risk attached to the downstream (reserve optimisation and mine sequencing) phases of the project. The original version of the paper (see Deraisme, Bertoli and Epinoux, 2014) used an early version of the scenario reduction plug-in (named S2RM) built in Isatis® software, where measuring the distance between the initial set of scenarios and the reduced set was based on Ni only. The implementation presented here is for the second generation of S2RM, where measuring the distance between the initial and the reduced set of realisations is based on all study variables. Australia is a world leader in the design and operation of mines accessed by the decline method. Literature indicates that a number of metalliferous underground mines using the decline system are also increasing steadily. This increase has generated a great deal of interest in underground haulage systems in future due to the huge costs involved in the development of declines. Studies have also shown that the current method of accessing orebodies by the conventional decline method has proved to be expensive, especially for narrow vein deposits. This is because decline development costs are influenced by mine planning and design parameters as well as available haulage systems that the mining engineer can choose from. The current access method suggests that more waste material is being extracted because of the size of decline openings adopted (5.5 mW and 5.5 mH). Also the conventional 1:7 decline gradient and turning radius of 20 m makes decline lengths, as well as the duration of development, excessively longer. This paper discusses results of a mine design case study with monorail technology as a method of accessing and developing the decline. The proposed system is economical, has high advance rates and offers a significant reduction in capital expenditure. The study compares costs, development metres and the duration of decline development using the monorail system with the conventional (truck haulage) access method. Results obtained indicate that the monorail technology has the potential to reduce the decline length by over 62.6 per cent and decline costs by 63 per cent for the case study. The monorail system also reduces the total capital development costs by 22 per cent for the same case study. Due to rapid development resulting from increased advance rates and the shorter decline length coupled with smaller decline openings, the time to access the deposit reduced by 71.8 per cent. This case study demonstrates that the economics of narrow vein deposits can be improved significantly by using the monorail system of decline development.

The IsaMillÖ is challenging the way that plants are designed and operated. This paper challenges existing designs of concentrator flow sheets, particularly focusing on magnetite circuits.   From what has started out as a small scale ultra fine grinding mill in the pharmaceutical and pigment industries, it has been redesigned and improved upon for mineral processing, and has been the mainstay of fine grinding applications for over ten years. These applications have required energy efficient grinding to succeed, and have been predominately in the base metals industry.   Further development of the IsaMillÖ has now resulted in the machines being able to treat larger tonnages, with higher capacity motors. This development, along with the introduction of purpose designed ceramic media, has allowed the mill to treat courser feed sizes. At the same time, the mill still offers highly efficient grinding, and has enabled it to be operated in coarser tertiary and secondary grinding applications.   The acceptance of the mill in coarser applications, predominately in base metals and PGM applications, has enabled the IsaMillÖ to be a serious contender for beneficiation in other minerals. One such application is the potential for IsaMillsÖ to be part of magnetite flow sheets, which are being considered in Australia to meet the growing iron demand of China. The high energy efficiency of the IsaMillÖ compared to conventional technologies, as well as the smaller infrastructure requirements, provides a great opportunity to reduce the power intensity of magnetite circuits.   This paper will examine the use of IsaMillÖ technology in conventional grinding applications, including recent testwork in a primary grinding base metal circuit, as well as testwork on magnetite ore comparing a lab scale IsaMillÖ with a lab scale Tower Mill.   The growing demand for minerals over the next decade, coupled with higher energy cost, will result in energy efficient technology, such as the IsaMillÖ, being included in standard circuit design.

Despite a long history of production of industrial minerals and rocks, New South Wales still offers significant opportunities for exploration for and development of these minerals. Exploration for opal, sapphires, and zeolites in the State has been particularly encouraged by pioneering geological studies by the Department of Minerals and Energy, which have resulted in the development of important new geological concepts and exploration techniques. Large areas with potential for these minerals have not yet been tested. In the case of sapphires, the studies have identified a new type of deposit which is'the source of most of the sapphires mined from alluvial deposits. Recent price increases for heavy minerals, a re-evaluation of previous exploration in coastal regions, and a recognition of suitable environments in inland New South Wales have stimulated renewed exploration both onshore and offshore and have led to increased production. Significant potential also exists for development of a number of other minerals, including: topaz, which occurs in large, unusual and perhaps unique deposits in northern New South Wales; dimension stone (particularly granite); bentonite; diatomite; and silica for metallurgical use. Potential also exists for development of construction material resources, particularly construction sand, which is in short supply in the Sydney region.

Macraes Mine is a large-scale open-cut and underground gold mine located in Central Otago, on the South Island of New Zealand. This paper presents the role of geological mapping in the grade control process at Macraes Open Pit as a case study, and demonstrates how systematic geological mapping can add significant value to the mining cycle. Geological mapping has proved to be a valuable foundation for orebody interpretation and analysis.Practical applications and lessons learnt are summarised, including predictive control of the orebody, improvement of geotechnical modelling, and identification of further exploration targets.

People in economically developed societies demonstrate inherent human care for Earth and want to stop pollution. Yet efforts to clean Earth seem bogged in confusion from wildly contradictory and alarmist predictions of æclimate crisisÆ. Supposed experts openly disagree yet weÆre told thereÆs universal agreement humans are causing æthe end of life as we know itÆ. The turmoil combines with peopleÆs feelings of fear, guilt, anger, hopelessness and even resignation and apathy to trigger æclimate alarmÆ. The paper enables people to rediscover clarity, hope and support for Earth by understanding how climate alarm and confusion were created and how they actually increase pollution. Many people seem to think global warming is as serious as pollution and worry that questioning alarm will enable pollution. Yet theyÆre different. We need be even more concerned about climate alarm because history shows repeatedly that when buried by ignorance and panic real problems grow overwhelming. Environmental credibility is endangered by confused politicians and sensationalist media. When weÆre willing to re-evaluate what weÆve been told we replace fear and confusion with facts and freedom to identify opportunities. Combining this with practical understanding of human behaviour and leadership enables opportunities to be identified and action taken. The paper shows how confident, informed leadership leads and supports higher productivity and effective care for the natural environment.

"The phased application of statistical process control (SPC) infers that processes are classifiable as pre-SPC (or phase zero), phase I and phase II processes, with different objectives being pursued in the different phases. Phase zero processes, defined as processes affected by assignable causes of variation, are characterised as follows: out-of-control with unknown autocorrelation structure having an unknown statistical distribution not performing consistently on target with minimum variability potentially incapable of conforming to the product specifications. The objectives of phase I SPC is to obtain estimates of the mean (µ), variance (s2), probability density function (f(X)) and the autocorrelation structure, as well as transforming the process into a phase II process (defined as a process conforming to specifications and performing on target with minimum variability). As in any other type of research or pragmatic improvement intervention, sampling is required is to achieve these objectives. The challenge of deciding a phase I sampling plan is multifarious since it has to cope with the aforementioned effects of assignable causes and provide for rigour estimates of the unknown parameters. Furthermore, deciding sampling plans in phase I invariably presents a classical catch-22 situation: appropriate sampling is required to determine the autocorrelation structure of a variable, but knowledge of the autocorrelation structure is required to formulate an appropriate sampling plan. This paper suggests, for random variables, guidelines to formulate sampling plans, and presents a methodology to estimate the inherent process parameters of process variables and an approach to identify assignable causes in phase I. CITATION:Breytenbach, W P, 2014. Geological data provides the foundations for the mining value chain. It is used to underpin the modelling and planning and consequently optimise downstream business decisions. However, it is often forgotten or taken for granted. End users often assume the data to be sound without verification. Geological data can be considered a company’s number one asset. Subsequently, the storage, use and management of this data need careful curation and time invested in preserving and protecting it. An established polymetallic mine with 20 000 drill holes could have a data replacement value in excess of $500M at 2020 prices, excluding labour and salary costs. The Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (the ‘JORC Code’) provides guidelines for Public Reporting. Within the code, Table 1 requires discussion around the different types of geological data, its collection and use. What is needed is additional details regarding the validation and integrity of the geological database. A comprehensive guideline specifying minimum geological standards for geological databases has been developed. This expands on the critical points outlined in Table 1 of the JORC Code. This guideline can be used by companies where geological databases are managed in-house or used to assess these services’ outsourcing. This guideline will ensure that geological data is reliable and unadulterated and can be used with confidence. Using this guideline will assist in preserving the investment of geological data in the mining value chain

The major technological advances of the last 30 years have profoundly reshaped mining practices. Machines keep getting bigger while productivity continues to increase and manning levels drop. These trends will continue and the introduction of breakthrough technologies will continue to accelerate, driven by a continued focus on lowering the cost of production, improving the productivity of workers and machines, and ensuring safer working environments. At the same time, global consolidation of mining companies has impacted on technology development in a range of ways. There are many potential technologies being proposed, some already operating in Australian mines. The automation of underground load-haul-dump (LHD) trucks for example, continues the process of removing workers from the most dangerous operating environments. Global positioning systems fitted to draglines, fibre optic communication channels, and 400 tonne trucks are only some examples of what lies ahead. However, where we need to return focus is to the technology of management û which is also one of the two key interrelated themes of this keynote address. Have we, as an industry, adequately been able to keep up with technological advances? Are our management systems as competent as the machinery we employ? The other key theme is the processes of globalisation and consolidation. What are the impacts on our industry? What are the implications of these processes, particularly for the ways in which we manage our people? My paper is divided into several components:some comments on the coal industry and the dramatic restructuring we have seen in recent years; in the context of this restructuring, an overview of my company and its evolution; my views on the role of contractors; some comments on the consolidation also occurring in the mining machinery and equipment, technology and services sectors; some observations on two major areas of technology û drill and blast; and trucks, shovels and excavators; the implications of consolidation and new technology for our employees and management; and finally some comments on research programs.

Mining companies are not ill-informed on the topic of community health. There have been a number of research studies that have illuminated community health issues associated with mining, especially in the western Canadian province of British Columbia. However, what is missing amongst the literature is the perspective of mine managers and mining executives on this topic. This is important as mine managers and executives face a number of issues related to community health and are under pressure to consider the topic in more detail. This paper presents results from an exploratory qualitative investigation based on grounded theory research techniques into current community health considerations from the perspectives of mine executives and mine managers working in Western Canada. Interviews were conducted between February and May 2012 with 11 mining versus ten mining executives and managers who represented operating mines or mining umbrella organisations in Western Canada. Participants report on general community health issues that are perceived to be important, the perceived role that the mining sector should play?in contributing to community health and how this differs in Western Canada as compared to locations abroad, and?risks companyÆs face in making community health contributions. This paper concludes by drawing attention to pressing health needs that are present in Northern, rural and Aboriginal populations in Western Canada and provides a platform for future research initiatives focused on improving the health and well-being of communities associated with the mining industry.
