Global iron ore demand, sparked by ChinaÆs rapid industrialisation and emergence as the worldÆs newest steel market, has seen iron ore groups investing heavily in production capacity as well as infrastructure. The success of these new projects depends heavily on reliability, competitiveness and quality control in an increasingly demanding trading environment. Furthermore, the iron ore industry continues to improve its competitiveness in mining practices, technology innovation and management processes. The continued fine tuning of these sectors will be critical to the success of the industry in the years ahead, and this mining sector will continue to demand process improvements from their service suppliers to maintain competitiveness. Automation offers a real solution to these demands. A crucial quality control element in mining, beneficiation, stockpiling and shipping stages is ensuring representative samples of ore are taken along each step of the process. When these samples reach the laboratory it is imperative that the sample is representative of the entire stream and that no induced errors occur. Examples of automation start with mechanical primary and secondary samplers in the run-of-mine processes through to sample tower and laboratory crushers, dividers and collectors. Automation is widely used in many forms to provide reliable and repeatable samples for analysis whilst providing a safer working environment. Laboratory automation systems in use today vary from simple linear systems to sophisticated robotic cells. Sample automation in the iron ore industry has resulted in many benefits for both producers and their customers. The most significant benefits have come in the form of higher safety standards whilst reducing sample error, sample handling and sample contamination during collection. These benefits have been further augmented by reliability and repeatability of automating the final sample preparation and analysis stage. Today these benefits are reflected in reduced costs of sampling and improvement in both turnaround time and quality of results, whilst complying with Australian safety and ISO sampling standards.

The mining industry is faced with imperatives to improve worker safety and productivity, adapt to skills shortages, high worker turnover rates, and provide more effective maintenance to new and ever more complicated plant and equipment. While more effective use of data combined with advanced analytics offers opportunities for improvement, providing this information to the worker in the field, in real-time, has proven expensive, cumbersome and ineffective. New capabilities are now emerging which address some of the limitations experienced to date. Augmented reality (AR) provides a means to overlay interactive digital information on top of the physical world. Combining the latest visual display, mobile computing and ‘track and trace’ technologies, AR provides an experience similar to a heads-up display in a fighter jet through small, personnel devices, such as smart phones or wearable glasses. Applying AR would allow a mobile worker to ‘see’ all relevant information for a given task, in the context of their physical environment and at the time they require it. The technologies behind AR are rapidly maturing and becoming available at a price point that is viable for commercial applications. It is anticipated that AR will become ubiquitous at a consumer level within the next five years. The specific challenges faced by the mining industry make it an ideal early adopter of AR technologies. This paper examines a number of use-cases of how AR can be applied to the mining industry and the benefits that can be realised. The paper will identify areas of further work and viable opportunities for immediate adoption within the industry.

Australian steelmakers produce up to 30 000 t/yr of electric arc furnace (EAF) dust. Current disposal techniques include sending EAF dust to landfill, stockpiling, and paying zinc smelters or registered waste removalists/processors to take the dust. Many of the complex overseas pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical treatment routes cited in the literature are not considered economic. Governmental, environmental and social pressures on producers to consider more sustainable disposal options are mounting, and there is now a strong push to consider recovering potentially valuable or recyclable components, such as zinc and iron units, from EAF dust. As well, there remain strong economic drivers for producers to find lower cost disposal solutions. Characterisation studies undertaken at CSIRO Minerals have revealed important physical differences in the nature of the zinc- and iron-bearing phases contained in domestic EAF dusts. These differences have been exploited using simple and cheap mineral processing techniques such as water washing, wet cycloning and wet magnetic separation. This has allowed a significant upgrade in the zinc content of EAF dust to be achieved, together with a reduction in the levels of key smelter penalty elements, such as chlorides and fluorides. The zinc-rich portion of the dust is now a more attractive smelter feed while the iron-rich part of the dust could potentially be briquetted or pelletised with a reductant and recycled to recover iron, and thus close the loop on dust processing. The basis of the separations tested together with laboratory results from several Australian dust samples are presented and discussed in this paper.

This work goes beyond the general perception of how the well-known mine to mill process can be applied, by applying deeper knowledge along the mining chain. Grade deportment and dilution are considered at the mining stage, and modelled with the new SMI blast movement simulator, linking with the block model data. Assessing the shift to a considerably more competent section of the orebody is quantified via substantial milling trials at standard and higher-intensity blasts. These were stockpiled for batch processing through the mill to ensure feed integrity. The trial work included operating the mill at widely different fillings to develop Grindcurve milling responses. Additionally, model informed process control is initiated via a mill prediction tool.It has been found that accounting for blast movement for the higher intensity blasts could generate additional value of around $1.5M per blast. With the high-intensity blast and changing mill control, the plant was easily able to exceed projected mill throughputs with the far more competent Pipeline ore. Strategies to shift the workload and debottleneck the milling circuit were proposed and proven during the milling trials, demonstrating an increase in throughput of 7 per cent despite running at a lower SAG mill speed, and potential of 16 per cent for increasing the SAG mill to standard operating speed. A number of process improvement opportunities have been identified to enhance current productivity and ensure long term capability to process the considerably more competent future ores. All of this is being linked in with the major digitisation program at the Barrick Cortez site, with an objective of linking all the data into a mine-wide process optimisation system, that can embed the processes by providing process-wide data access and production support via the future dynamic models linking ore body knowledge to productivity along the full process chain.CITATION:Powell, M, Yahyaei, M, Geronimo, J, Yussupova, Z and Kumar, P, 2018. The environmental and economic impacts of a significant dependence on fossil fuels are affecting the future of sectors such as of mining. These impacts are prompting the Australian Government to seek solutions for reducing its dependence on fossil fuels more generally, such developing clean energy and improving energy efficiency. However, limited research has been undertaken to assess the potential synergies between clean energy and mining in an uncertain global future. This paper analyses current energy use by mining in Australia and reviews the drivers and opportunities for energy efficiency and cleaner energy technologies to be coupled to mining under three future scenarios. Linkages between mining and clean energy are investigated for three global scenarios for mining and metals to 2030, developed by the World Economic Forum (WEF), namely Green Trade Alliance, Rebased Globalism and Resource Security. These scenarios are applied to assess how they could change the barriers, opportunities and trade-offs required for the development of a more sustainable energy sources by the minerals industry in Australia.

The Ban Houayxai Gold-Silver Operation is a producing asset for Australian-based copper and gold producer, PanAust Limited. The Operation lies within PanAust’s 2600 square-kilometre Phu Bia Contract Area in northern Laos. Commencing production in 2012, Ban Houayxai is operated by PanAust’s Lao-registered company, Phu Bia Mining. PanAust owns a 90 per cent interest in Phu Bia Mining. The Government of Laos owns the remaining 10 per cent. The Operation mines an intermediate sulphidation epithermal gold-silver deposit and comprises an open-pit feeding ore to a conventional carbon-in-leach process plant. Metallurgical recoveries for gold and silver are approximately 75-85 per cent and 55 per cent respectively. To year-end 2017, the Operation had poured 0.65 million ounces (oz) of gold and 4.7 million oz of silver. The Ban Houayxai Ore Reserve supports a mine life of approximately four years from the end of 2017. The Ban Houayxai deposit is in an early Permian volcano-sedimentary unit which is part of a late Carboniferous to early Permian (310–270 million years ago) volcanic-plutonic sequence of the Truong Son Fold Belt. The deposit formed when hot saline (240–415°C, 2.7–13.0 weight per cent NaCl equivalent) fluids ascended from a geologically fertile island arc porphyry into overlying volcanics along a fault or faults in the early Permian (290–256 million years ago) (Manaka et al, 2014). World urban expansion puts constraints on the available land surface area of our major cities both for accommodating people as well as providing infrastructure and services whilst at the same time attempting to preserve the remaining natural environment. Whilst consideration is often given to underground planning for private and public transport infrastructure, the author is of the opinion that the current lack of underground planning of our cities that are suitable for underground development will have major long implications when finally the need for underground space planning is critical and ultimately recognised. This paper identifies the need for our city planners to integrate surface planning and underground planning as a ‘total planning solution’ where the city plan incorporates the elements of underground space planning as identified in this paper. Investigations by the author reveal that there are very few cities in the world that actually incorporate underground space planning in their city plans. The author uses the City of Brisbane as a case study for the potential introduction of underground space planning as part of the city plan. Despite efforts by the author to include the planning concept of underground commercial development in the latest Brisbane City Plan 2014 as well as four underground space workshops in Brisbane over the past 20 year through the Australasian Tunnelling Society (ATS), underground space planning for the City of Brisbane, apart from infrastructure projects, is not considered of significance to the City of Brisbane.CITATION:Robertson, A C, 2014. A brief history of the significant haulage truck feature changes and the factors that influenced those changes during the 60's and 70's provide a basis for forecasting the changes that can be expected in the 1980's. A review of the impact factors and changing requirements that currently exist that will create changes. Define the critical requirements of a successful haulage truck design and discuss the availability of bigger engines and better electric drive componetry to provide deeper pit capability and improve reliability. The Unit Rig Trolley Assist System to provide improved productivity and diesel fuel savings and an economic analysis to evaluate the Trolley System is covered. The Unit Rig Automatic Truck System for a driverless truck is covered in concept and discussed from the point of view of the experience in a test in a New Mexico mine. Data is the most valuable commodity in the information age. The use of data enables productivity, opportunity, and safety in various sectors and industries. In the late 1950s, Alan Turing coined the term artificial intelligence (AI) to describe the ability of computing machines to think and behave like humans through simplified reasoning and logic (Turing, 1950). This concept of mimicking human behaviour is the building block of machine learning algorithms used in most AI software. The ‘learning’ aspect in machine learning requires data, that is, information on the environment or the objective, to be modelled or predicted using AI. An AI-enabled system aims to predict the unknown faster and intuitively. Intuition in software algorithms can be described as probabilistic, learned through the data that the AI system is trained on; indeed, the AI software cannot predict the future, but it can provide the likelihood of an event/action occurring, thereby enabling decisions or responses to prevent it or take action. Just as various industries have adopted AI as the tool of choice to seek new opportunities (examples: medical research, self-driving cars, financial modelling), the mining industry, too, has been receptive to embracing AI for problem-solving and maximising the value of its business.

Shane is enjoying his new work. Six months ago, he was stocking shelves at his local supermarket and decided to make the big move to a job in mining with more challenge and, of course, more dollars. He's been through his inductions, received his training tickets and is now working in a crew of eight underground at a fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) operation. There are many more systems and processes here than in his retail job, and Shane's comfortable that his safety is being looked after. He is enjoying the continually changing work and conditions, it makes the job interesting. It's taking some time to get used to the roster and he is worn out by changeover, but he gets more time with friends and family during R & R.   Generally, the mining industry has a maturing safety culture and well developed systems. This sometimes lulls people into a false sense of security. Safety systems cannot anticipate every possible situation, nor can they replace people's perception, thinking and decision-making. To manage safety, it's critical to find the right balance between dependence on systems and a healthy fear and respect of risks we face.   As safety standards are raised, systems tend to get more thorough and complex. When a new person joins a mining crew, we induct and train them to provide the information they need. As labour availability again becomes short, and many new people join our industry, we shouldn't assume they know the fundamentals. We need to explain not only what they are expected to do, but why doing what we ask and expect will keep them safe. We must equip people to deal with both the routine and the unexpected.   This presentation explores the challenges of balancing a structured, systematic approach to safety with the need to also equip people to deal effectively with risks everyday in dynamic and extraordinary situations.   Session purpose Introduce participants to a way of looking at risk from a different perspective, as a force for change and progress, if managed well. Demonstrate that risk is something we need to engage with emotionally as well as physically, if we want our risk management efforts to be successful. This purpose will be achieved through an entertaining and engaging presentation, using photos and case studies. The session will initiate interest to explore new ways of thinking about risk and generate discussion about the balance between people and systems. What is the right balance and why getting it right enhances the safety culture, while getting it wrong can impact on safety, business performance and sustainability.

BHP Billiton (BHPB) was the first company to start iron ore mining in the Pilbara at Mt Goldsworthy in 1966 through Goldsworthy Mining Limited (GML - then Consolidated Goldfields Australia, Cyprus Mines and Utah). Operations later started at Newman on Mt Whaleback in 1969 with the Mt Newman Mining Joint Venture (MNM û then comprising American Metals Climax û AMAX, Colonial Sugar Refineries û CSR and BHP). In 1986 it acquired majority ownership of MNM, and at the same time the previously 100 per cent BHPB owned but undeveloped Yandi property came on board. Purchase of Jimblebar (formerly McCameyÆs Monster) occurred in 1990 and full ownership of Goldsworthy followed in 1991. With the exception of Jimblebar (100 per cent owned), all mines are now 85 per cent BHPB and the balance with Itochu and Mitsui. This evolution of the company resulted in an eclectic mix of mines/ores, each with their varied exploration and evaluation histories. Discussion of some aspects of these histories, and reflections on changes in exploration-related activities with particular reference to discussion of advances in geological understanding since the 1960s forms the basis of this paper. BHPB presently has open cut mines at four main centres û Newman, Jimblebar, Marillana Creek (Yandi) and Yarrie û and is currently developing the former GML Area C near Yandi. With the exception of NewmanÆs Mt Whaleback mine and immediate satellites, all are contract operated. Ore is carried on BHPB railroads (696 km total) for export through the companyÆs Nelson Point or Finucane Island shipping facilities at Port Hedland. Some is directed to the BHPB Boodarie Iron hot briquetted iron plant near Finucane Island. Over 73 Mt of ore was produced by BHPB in calendar 2001, and the company has now mined over 1500 Mt in Western Australia since their operations at Yampi Sound first started in 1956.

Since the publications of Gy’s initial work, many authors have discussed the approaches to estimate the variance of the fundamental sampling error (FSE). Experimental tests suggested by Pitard and François-Bongarçon determine the sampling parameters K and a to calibrate Gy’s formula. The heterogeneity test and the sample tree method are well known and broadly used for many commodities. However, prior to the analysis, the collection of a representative sample is an intriguingly difficult task. The composite for the heterogeneity tests often consists of run-?of-?mine material or processed ore on a conveyor belt. In most cases the final sample does not have enough mass, mixes different geological units, represents a rare blend and does not characterise the deposit. In order to obtain a reliable composite for trace elements and low-grade ores, sampling practitioners suggest at least half a ton of material.To prevent the common representative pitfalls in the FSE, this case study focuses on a single gold-?bearing geological unit collected in situ. With this unit being structured by the mine geologists, but with the interaction between engineers and chemists, it was possible to validate the reconciliation suggested by Pitard (2015). The heterogeneity test and the sample tree method were performed using 500 kg of a smoky quartz from a single geological domain and the results were compared to Gy’s formula. The logging practice by the geologists was modified, emphasising the definition of the size of the gold nugget or its cluster, number of grains and association. Finally, a mineralogical study was conducted on the geological unit to define the liberation factor. All the information is compiled in this paper, showing the need to fully understand the mineralisation to correctly define representative samples and proper analytical techniques.CITATION:Villanova, F L S P, Heberle, A and Chieregati, A C, 2017. Societal influences, needs, and uses for recyclable materials are becoming increasingly important business and economic factors in the traditional natural resource companies. Several metals (such as steel, aluminium, zinc, lead and cadmium) are amenable ro recycle which eliminates solid waste generation and decreases the depletion of natural resources. In recent years, the non-ferrous industries have begun to recycle more materials and the next decade will see even larger recycle efforts. In addition to the traditonal recyclable materials, existing metallurgical plants are, or should be, able to handle and recycle materials viewed as 'hazardous'. Unfortunately, some national and regional regulations hinder, and in some cases prevent, the recycling of certain materials. Zinc Corporation of America (ZCA) is currently the largest producer of zinc metal in the USA and one of the world's largest producers of value-added zinc products. Over the last few years, ZCA has become one of the world's largest recyclers of zinc from various diverse materials. ZCA considers these recyclable materials as valuable 'land mines' that provide economic alternatives to the depletion of natural resources while serving society in the minimisation of solid waste disposal. Using the current production facilities of ZCA as a model, this paper overviews the recycling of zinc-bearing materials with special emphasis on: 1. the amenability for recycle within ZCA's pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical operations, 2. the quantities and economics of recycle, 3. the problems of recycling hindered by current national and regional regulations, 4. the concepts of total recycle rather than just recovering zinc while generating a modified solid waste, and 5. the motivators for recycling.

The AMIRA International P843A Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling (GeMIII) project is an interdisciplinary research collaboration between 17 global mineral companies and four research organisations aimed at providing support for the emerging industry trend of geometallurgy. The main aim of the project is to develop predictive geometallurgical indices which can be incorporated into a resource block model to maximise the commercial value of an orebody and to minimise the social and environmental impact of mining operations.Researchers at the Parker Centre/CSIRO have been focusing on the development of predictive hydrometallurgical indices for the GeMIII project via rapid, small-scale, cost-effective tests and protocols for comparative ranking of attributes relevant to leach performance. The focus of the small-scale leach tests has been to determine the leach index (relative indication of leach performance), recovery, impurity deportment, reagent consumption, effect of size/degree of liberation and mineralogy of samples for their relative ranking. Predictive tests for heap leach hydrology (related to agglomerate characteristics) and slurry rheological behaviour are also being developed.

Semi-arid regions suffer from two afflictions; evaporation may exceed precipitation by multiples of two or more and variations in precipitation can be both extreme and difficult to predict. Many Australian mines are situated in semi-arid areas where communities are reliant upon locally sourced water or special purpose infrastructure is built as part of the mine construction. As the question of climate change looms, issues related to future water supply and sustainable water management become increasingly important. Across Australia several mining operations co-exist in a single surface water and/or groundwater catchment area. The management of water on a mine by mine or a community by community basis is illogical and must be reconsidered based on a single water catchment and a whole-of-community basis. Mine water should be considered on a full life cycle basis where the quality is assessed for specific mine site applications. This paper addresses technical challenges that include surface water and groundwater supply in semi-arid regions, operational water in the mining industry, beneficial uses of water, water economics and demand management. In much the same way as emissions trading evolved into a multi-stakeholder forum, mining regions offer scope for innovative thinking in water supply and reuse. In addition, this paper considers a number of initiatives taken by Australian mining companies that are entering a prefeasibility stage and contrasts these initiatives against the established success within a South African mining region. The challenges and potential solutions to this initiative are presented for future consideration.

The development of a water accounting framework that enables consistent and contextual reporting of minerals operationsÆ water use, represents a key sustainable development objective that many Australian minerals companies have committed to. A future water accounting framework will require: key terms and definitions for water metrics for use in the Australian minerals industry that are consistent with the wider water sector, a suite of metrics representing key components of an operationÆs water balance, a calculation method for some of the metrics, and a reporting protocol. This paper presents the methodology that was used to derive these four components. Existing accounting frameworks were reviewed and key terms and definitions that were consistent with current regulatory requirements and voluntary approaches were proposed. A calculation methodology was developed to obtain some of the key indicators and variables that cannot be easily measured directly (eg water loss through evaporation). The adopted terms and definitions typically require a combination of empirical and estimated data. To test the proposed definitions and calculation methodology, values for water metrics were derived for eight sites, selected to test a variety of commodity and biophysical situations. The proposed framework and definitions could deal with the specific situations selected as case studies. The associated calculation methodology produced complete accounts at various levels. Some elements of the accounts could be directly checked against available data and simulations. The framework captured well variations in the reuse efficiencies; reuse efficiency could even vary for similar processes. It is concluded that this preliminary accounting framework provides a consistent language and metrics for quantifying and communicating water management, both at the intersection of the site with the surrounding landscape (through detailed reporting of site inputs and outputs) and within operational activities. Using this consistent framework for quantifying and documenting water use within an operation will provide a platform for compiling and comparing minerals industry water use with other sectors. This may support benchmarking activities within regions or companies and help demonstrate leadership amongst water users in water resource stewardship. The approach presented here is applicable to a wide variety of mining and processing activities, and biophysical environments, and following a period of stakeholder engagement and third party review, is being refined as a first step towards developing nationally consistent water use reporting for the Australian minerals industry.

The increase in metals demand in the electrifying globe means significant growth in the smelting of copper, nickel, zinc, and lead, produced from primary sulfide sources or using sulfide mattes as the intermediates of the process chains. This means that leaner and complex mineral deposits will be evaluated as ores and are in the future traded in the commodity market for smelting and refining to pure metals. An important issue in the trend is the technology metals, like antimony, tellurium, and gallium, which exist as trace elements in sulfide ores and form no ores of their own. Their recovery becomes important in the coming decades as will be the case with growing slag amounts without use in other industries. The key is to produce environmentally acceptable slags in the smelting operations. It sets new boundary conditions to the treatment of flue dusts. This means that all material streams of smelting and refining must be re-evaluated for the deportments of the main and minority metals. In copper smelting, the recoveries of precious metals are today important for the feasibility of the custom smelters but due to low prices of many minority metals they are discarded in slag landfills. It is one of the emerging issues also in the secondary copper smelting today and once the demand grows, the same question will be faced also in the mining-beneficiation-smelting-refining chain of the primary production of nickel, zinc, and lead. The distributions of many technology metals in the copper and nickel smelting have been recently studied using methods where the chemically bound trace elements in the slag and its phases at the smelting conditions have been studied. Thus, the key data about options for process modifications and additional processing steps are piling up. Short processing routes in the metals smelting and refining are attractive due to their simplicity. At the same time, complexity of many raw materials challenges the fluxing at high oxygen partial pressures in low silica slags with high metal concentrations. The compromise between high primary recovery and safe operation is a demanding task in conditions where slag foaming outside the processing window is evident. The increase in the demand of pure nickel is challenging the raw material basis where low-grade sulfide ores are soon smelted along with nickel laterites to matte. It is a demanding task at high MgO concentrations. The low solubility of MgO in iron silicate slags requires new fluxing strategies and new smelting end points for the operation at reasonable temperatures; the direct nickel matte smelting in one-matte mode may be an option.

Gunnedah, in north-western New South Wales (NSW), including the town, the surrounding Liverpool Plains and the Pilliga forests to the west, are currently the subject of intense mining interest for coal and coal seam gas. Achieving positive outcomes for koala conservation on mined landscapes will require a sound grasp of koala ecology; and local knowledge of koala movements, tree choice and associated threats to the continued survival of koalas, particularly roadkill from increased mining infrastructure. This requires a research-oriented approach to testing ideas applicable to the long-term survival of koala populations. Our recent koala research in NSW has shown that, in 2006, Gunnedah had the largest koala population west of the Great Dividing Range, and the only population in NSW that was expanding. That prompted us to instigate a detailed study in 2008 - 2011 to determine, inter alia, whether the koalas were using trees that were planted in the 1990s to cope with rising soil salinity. Our GPS-tracking has shown that regrowth trees as young as ten years old can attract koalas. In 2009, the demise of about a quarter of the local koala population from an intense heatwave gave us a foretaste of how habitat and climate change interrelate at the landscape scale. We are now examining the optimal combinations of tree choice, and patch size and shape, for habitat restoration. This will be relevant to local coal seam gas and coal mine proposals, and ongoing mitigation actions. The Senate enquiry of September 2011 on the koala and demonstrated the intense public interest in the survival of this iconic species. Its subsequent listing for Queensland and NSW under the Commonwealth Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 further raises its profile and obligations for management of koalas and their habitat. It will take considerable effort to manage the Liverpool Plains koala population for the next 50 years in the face of extensive land-use changes from mining, and the attendant threats from road kill, compounded by the new threat of climate change manifesting itself as an increased frequency of heatwaves and more severe droughts. This paper describes the research that underpins these conclusions, identifies some of the research approaches needed, argues for working strategically now, rather than try to patch up matters after the event, and presents a set of guides for environmental plantings.
