The paper discusses assay methods generally used when prospecting for gold, and also the applicability of various chemical methods, it describes a new paper chromatographic technique.for making fairly rapid semi-quantitative assays for very fine gold. Testing of the method in field work shows that this simple method could have applications in geologic work, in prospecting and in certain routine mine sampling work. It is not yet a method that can be used to detect anomalies in traces of gold dispersed around an orebody, as is general practice in geochemical prospecting.INTRODUCTIONAccording to the English economist Harrod (1958), "the acute shortage of gold in the world-because currency value has not been adjusted in line with the fall in the goods value of the various currencies-has been a familiar fact for some time now". Harrod calculates that a rise in the price of gold to double its present value is necessary to rectify this condition, and that, if this rise were to take place, increase in production and reduction in private hoarding might well bring annual accretion to world stocks from the presentaverage of about $464 million to a figure close to the $2,000 million that would probably eiiminate these shortages.Any increase in the price of gold is bound to lead to a great increase in prospecting at working mines, in abandoned areas and possibly in untouched country. Prospecting, techniques for base metal orebodies have improved greatly in the last thirty years; but methods available to detect gold occurring without accessory metals have not received the same attention. The recent renewal of interest in hydrometallurgical routes for copper production has been brought about by the possible future reliance on mixed ores and lower grade deposits, environmental aspects, and energy considerations.A number of hydrometallurgical processes for the recovery of copper have recently been proposed. Flowsheets are developed for two processes which incorporate several treatment methods being experimentally studied in Australia.In the first process a cupric chloride leach is followed by electrowinning whilst the second is based on the formation of cuprous ions, stabuized by acetonitrile and subsequent disproportionation to cupric ions and metallic copper. For the purpose of comparison, flowsheets were also developed for the Arbiter and Cymet processes.Process economics are estimated for the four processes and the results are discussed in relation to competitive pyrometallurgy. None of the four hydrometallurgical processes, with possible exception of the Cymet process, appears to be competitive with established large scale and newly developed pyrometallurgical processes for chalcopyrite.However, because the economics of the individual hydrometallurgical processes depend strongly on specific conditions, a "tailored" process may be competitive with pyrometallurgy in particular circumstances.

The surface-to-inseam (SIS) directional drilling technique has been utilised at Oaky Creek Coal for more than a decade to predrain both the Oaky No 1 and Oaky North mining areas. The cumulative drilling program constitutes a total of 140 lateral and 200 vertical holes, and 405 km of lateral drilling.The use of SIS gas drainage has been successful with the following site-specific benefits being recognised:ability to drain German Creek seam gas contents to residual gas levels of new mining areas within an 18-month period from commencement of well productionstructural geological verification of the mine design well in advance of development mining occurring in an areaability to conduct successful predrainage of the overlying Aquila seam to reduce subsequent goaf emissions.Appropriate and up-to-date geological knowledge during the design and drilling process is a significant influence to achieving success. Vertical production wells need to be located in a position that is most effective to remove water from hole. The lateral hole should not include intersections with significant geological structure.SIS drilling provides continuous seam roof/floor data to help define seam geometry and locate geological hazards with high accuracy. In faulted ground and with variable seam gradients, SIS data can resolve geological ambiguities from seismic sections and enhance seam correlation that would otherwise be available only from discrete and closely-spaced infill vertical exploration drilling.Here, we review some examples of SIS configurations and practice to highlight key learnings in drilling long inseam holes (up to 1900 m per arm) ahead of development and mining. Simulation modelling is a practice commonly used in the mining industry to evaluate alternative process designs. Such modelling is typically undertaken as an optimisation study to increase the efficiencies, productivity and product quality of operating mines. In this situation, real short-term grade variability data of extracted ore are available from production records as input data into the simulation.There is also a need for simulation modelling to be performed before mines are approved for construction to clarify the grade variability characteristics that can be expected from the operating mine and assist in the optimisation of the process design. In this situation no historical short-term grade variability data are available. To achieve meaningful and reliable results from a simulation it is necessary to have input data for the ore to be extracted from the pits, representative of the short-term grade variability that would be expected for the operating mine.This paper describes an example of a path taken to generate realistic input data.A method described as composite cut-off criterion was used to distinguish ore from waste, which gave substantially greater recovered tonnage at target grade compared to the conventional quadrant cut-off grade criteria.The only data available for the project was resource model data in the form of kriged block models, which are known to underestimate true ore grade variability. To achieve realistic results from the simulation it was essential to increase this variability while maintaining the accurate average grades. Areas of certain deposits that were modelled using both kriging and conditional simulation estimation techniques were quantitatively compared to establish the comparative variance and the kriged data was modified to match the conditionally simulated variance.A realistic mining model was generated via a process of discretisation and regularisation of the resource blocks. Quantitative assessment demonstrated that this method adequately compensated for ore dilution and that adjustment for ore loss was not required due to an ore skin surrounding the edge blocks.The conditioned data was then used to generate a schedule of daily mine extraction, considering grade variability, tonnage, equipment constraints and extensive blended-in-blended-out precrusher stockpiles to feed into the process design simulations.For the precrusher stockpiles a number of alternative allocation criteria were examined for ore being extracted from the pits to identify the best method in achieving reduced variability through the daily scheduling system. The study concluded that a single analyte separation criterion produced acceptable variability with minimal complexity.The blending efficiency of manually stacked and reclaimed precrusher stockpiles was studied to determine a realistic blending efficiency within the pile. A recommended method of building and reclaiming was determined to give maximum blending efficiency.Finally, the data was used as input into process design simulation models; simulation from crusher feed to shiploading demonstrating that control of shipment grade variability was achievable and that the conditioning of the data delivered realistic results.CITATION:Jupp, K, Howard, T J and Everett, J E, 2013. High-accuracy, solid-state digital reference barometers have proven to be well suited to conducting underground barometric pressure surveys. The only problem is their expense; at least A$4000 each. For this reason, and because barometric pressure surveys are not a routine undertaking, very few mines have been able to justify the purchase of suitable instruments. The author knows of only three Australian metalliferous mines that own them.However, this may soon change given the recent development of low-cost, mass-produced miniature barometric pressure transducers. These transducers were developed to provide an altimeter function in the latest generation of smartphones. The main purpose of the inbuilt altimeter function is to allow the smartphone to be aware of its altitude when the global positioning system satellite signal is lost.This paper describes a prototype barometer that was constructed using one of the most accurate of the latest generation of piezo-resistive smartphone barometric pressure transducers. The prototype instrument was constructed for less than five per cent of the cost of a commercially available digital reference barometer. The prototype was subsequently tested against a reference barometer at the University of Queensland’s Experimental Mine to verify its accuracy and suitability for measuring pressure differences between underground survey stations.It is expected that the instrument’s low cost will pave the way for barometric pressure surveys to become more commonly used in mines. In turn, the resulting improvement in knowledge of major underground pressure losses should allow mine ventilation officers and engineers to optimise their ventilation systems and potentially reduce overall operating costs.An alternative option would be to use a barometer-equipped smartphone as a survey instrument, provided that its inbuilt barometer module is sufficiently accurate.CITATION:Derrington, A S, 2015. The Witwatersrand Supergroup is host to the world’s largest gold deposits. The location, quantity, grade, continuity and other geological characteristics of a Mineral Resource are either known, estimated from specific geological evidence and knowledge, or interpreted from a well constrained and portrayed geological model. Establishing such a model is an integral part of the evaluation process in the Anglogold Ashanti (AGA) group, and is referred to as a Geoscience Business Model for the mining operations. The geological model established over the years has relied on detailed descriptions of the mineralisation, and understanding of the regional and local geology of the Witwatersrand sediments, in the West Wits and Free State goldfields. The processes of data collection in regard to underground stope and developing mapping, structural and sedimentological mapping, and the geological inputs to mine planning systems are described, together with aspects of drilling, sampling, grade control, and data management. Anglogold Ashanti’s Geoscience Department employs a complex and unique process to generate the Mineral Resource, including a 3D geological structure model of the orebodies which are usually highly faulted, and a robust mineralisation/facies model on which the decisions about domain boundaries are established. A Mineral Resource Inventory System (MRIS) has a dynamic graphic interface to the resource database that is used for compiling the resource statement. It is also used to determine the gold-called-for, as well as short and long-term planning. A unique estimation process using the extensive closely spaced stope face sampling database and the more widely spaced surface drilling information is used in combination in the Macro Co-Kriging estimation. The use of different support sizes in the C0-Kriging process is preceded by the equally unique ‘clusterisation’ and ‘acceptorisation’ procedures by which the data are quality controlled and assured prior to their use in the kriging process. The Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates are classified according to the SAMREC code through a method that ensures that they are compliant, auditable, transparent and reconcilable with previous Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve statements.

"World-class mine projects are increasingly failing to become world-class mines. Non-technical, socio-political and environmental problems seem, in part, to be the cause. However, the intangible and qualitative nature of these problems means overcoming them will require a greater systemic understanding of how the various technical and non-technical factors interact. This is particularly important as the concept of sustainable development has changed the industry paradigm sufficiently that it is no longer clear what world-class means. Finally, this better systemic understanding of mine projects needs communicating back to the exploration sector to improve exploration targeting.However, a disconnect between the exploration and mining sectors and between geologists and mining’s other professional disciplines means this is currently not possible. The use of economic evaluation techniques to assess the risk and value presented by the various technical and non-technical factors can assist with this by giving the varied professions a common language and including inputs from all disciplines. This paper therefore suggests a theoretical framework for analysing the various technical and non-technical factors, particularly the most challenging intangible and qualitative ones, and incorporating them into the typical economic evaluation techniques used in the mining industry.Understanding the risk and value relating to both technical and non-technical risks, however, places a greater emphasis on mining geologists to be conversant with a wide range of disciplines. Mining geologists will have to develop three types of knowledge:focusedinter-disciplinarybroad. In addition, they will have to become systemic thinkers to connect these types of knowledge. This multidisciplinary approach will require the use of fundamental critical thinking skills, common sense, intuition, experience and quantitative modelling techniques, dependent on the situation. As a result, both companies and professional societies, such as the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, will have to develop ways of improving mining geologists’ inter-disciplinary and broad knowledge.CITATION:Sykes, J P and Trench, A, 2014. From March to May of 1963, the Bureau of Mineral Resources carried out an experimental aeromagnetic survey at Cobar, New South Wales, to field test a proton-precession magnetometer installation in the Cessna aircraft VH-GEO. The Cobar area was chosen as considerable information was already held on the Earth's magnetic field there, which was known to provide a range of anomalous areas that are not excessively disturbed.A procedure for survey flying and methods for processing data were developed during the survey. Contour maps of the aeromagnetic results were produced in the field. The experimental survey was successful in outlining magnetic anomalies in detail.INTRODUCTIONSince 1951 the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics (B.M.R.) has carried out an airborne magnetometer exploration programme with DC.3 aircraft carrying fluxgate magnetometer equipment. Recently a proton-precession magnetometer was developed by the Design and Development Group of the B.M.R. for observatory use. One unit modified for airborne use was installed in the Cessna light aircraft, VH-GEO. The Cessna was modified structurally to take the magnetometer, associated bird, and winch gear.The proton-precession magnetometer has many good features.1. The provision and management of energy in both fuel and electricity forms is an increasingly important consideration for mines. Pressures from communities, governments and markets are increasing towards more transparent and improved energy management. Combined with the energy-water nexus, where water and energy are closely related in the operation of a mine, this emerging business climate means a more thorough and responsible approach is required for the acquisition and use of energy, as well as the release of emissions. Many of the complexities in potential new ore bodies are borne in remote locations, high altitudes, low grades, arid climates and deep deposits. Each of these challenges affects the successful provision of energy. In combination, such challenges can leave an operation seemingly unviable from an energy perspective, especially when approached from a traditional mining energy feasibility lens. This paper discusses some of the energy alternatives currently available and emerging in the mining industry. Both energy supply and demand options are considered, which can provide a very different energy footprint with the flexibility to address, and potentially overcome, major energy challenges for a mine. The Konongo Gold Project is located on the western margin of the 125 Moz Ashanti Gold Belt in Ghana, West Africa. It is situated 60 km along strike of the world-class mineral system at Obuasi and is interpreted to lie on the same controlling regional shear system.The project is operated by Signature Metals, a subsidiary of the Liongold Corporation, and is managed and funded by the Liongold Corporation.Historic underground operations at Konongo produced 1.6 Moz Au at a head grade of 11.8 g/t Au, from eight operations spread along 16 km of the shear system. Mining focused almost exclusively on free-milling gold in quartz, ignoring the gold-bearing sulfide mineralisation associated with the quartz veins. Underground mining ceased in 1986.In 2013, Signature Metals re-focused the program at Konongo to assess the viability of mining the sulfide ore sustainably. This led to the first campaign review of the historic underground data and resource potential since mine closure. The Obenemase mine was the first of the eight operations to be assessed as part of this campaign.Large amounts of legacy data have survived for Obenemase and several historic resource estimations have been completed based on these data. The data typically consisted of hand-drawn sections and plans, and ledgers of commonly incomplete drilling and sampling data. Some drill core have been lost over time, but a large amount of quarter-core and half-core as well as pulps and rejects are still available. Previous resource estimates had a low confidence value because all the available assay and geological data were integrated effectively with the estimates, resulting in a lack of understanding of both grade and geological continuity.This project built a new geological model for Obenemase that greatly enhances the understanding of the controls on mineralisation using a thorough approach of re-surveying, re-cataloguing and re-logging. This model led to an increased degree of confidence and a subsequent upgrade of resource classification, and created several previously unrecognised strong exploration targets. The green production of the steelmaking process has urgent requirements for fluorine-free fluxes. In this article, a new solid waste-based slagging flux was applied in the external dephosphorisation test of low silicon hot metal to replace the traditional fluorite-lime dephosphorisation slag. The results showed that under laboratory conditions, the new flux was utilised for smelting low-silicon molten iron with a phosphorus content of 0.10~0.13 wt per cent, the temperature of the molten iron was 1350°C and the slag amount was controlled at 2 per cent. Within ten minutes of smelting, the dephosphorisation rate of the molten iron reached more than 50 per cent. When making slag with new flux, the slag melting time was about 40 seconds and the P2O5 content in the final slag was higher than 8 wt per cent. In the industrial test of a 150 t molten iron ladle, under the same molten iron conditions, an out-of-furnace dephosphorisation test was conducted in the Kambara Reactor (KR) process. The flux material consumption per ton of steel was 8~10 kg. Within 15 minutes of smelting, the dephosphorisation rate of the molten iron was about 30 per cent. During flux slag making, the slag melting time was about three minutes and the P2O5 content in the final slag was higher than 6 wt per cent. This new solid waste-based flux has significant cost advantages and outof- furnace dephosphorisation effects and is expected to become the benchmark for a new generation of fluorine-free steelmaking fluxes.

The mainline running tunnels for Legacy Way comprise two tunnel boring machine (TBM) driven tunnels. Both TBM drives commenced at the Launch Portal adjacent the Mt Coot-tha Road. Excessive surface settlement arising from tunnelling would have had a significant impact to the road infrastructure. The geological structure above the tunnel springline is a mixture of fill, residual soil and weak rock. Given the combination of low ground cover and weak ground materials, along with the use of an open face TBM, an oversize pipe umbrella system has been installed above the tunnels. This pipe umbrella system is similar to that commonly adopted in conventional mined excavation support in soft ground except that the steel pipes are substantially larger in geometry and filled with concrete. It is acknowledged that similar systems with oversize pipe umbrella have been adopted elsewhere in the world in other projects. These systems often comprise of a full arch formed by conjoining oversize steel pipes (in contact only). By aligning the pipes in contact, the arching behaviour of the steel pipe would have been enhanced. However, this poses a degree of construction difficulty due to excavation and installation method of the pipes. The Legacy Way pipe umbrella system only consists of a partial arch at the tunnel crown and each pipe is spaced approximately 1200 mm apart with 900 mm diameter pipe, leaving a gap of approximately 300 mm between pipes. A reinforced concrete portal block was used to support the exposed ends of the pipes.This paper reviews the design analysis, the recorded deflections from the pipe umbrellas and surface monitoring during TBM launch and revisits the analysis using the newly available RS3 program, from Rocscience for 3D analysis of geotechnical structures.CITATION:Norbert, M and O’Connor, D, 2014. In response to the need for improved magnetic separators for beneficiation of fine grained iron ores that have been finely ground to liberate the iron minerals from the gangue, a series of high efficiency wet drum permanent magnetic separators (T-GCT) has been developed by Maanshan Tiangong Technology Co Ltd. These magnetic separators have high efficiency for separating superfine strongly magnetic minerals and the ability to produce high-grade concentrates with high recovery. They are ideal replacements for conventional drum magnetic separators, especially for treating superfine particles.

"Narrow vein mining can be loosely defined as mining operations involving orebodies with a true thickness of less than 4 m. Some authors have limited the term to steeper-dipping orebodies where the ore will rill under gravity. However, ænarrow veinÆ can also legitimately refer to some of the flatter orebodies, such as many of the platinum, chrome and gold deposits of Southern Africa, and several in Australasia including Bullen (at Norseman), Sunrise Dam, Telfer (Patterson, 1993) and the famous æflatmakesÆ at the Emperor Gold Mine in Fiji (Gordon and Harmse, 1993). Where the orebody dip is less than about 40¦ additional effort is usually required to remove the broken ore, including the use of scrapers, hydraulic monitors or remote-operated excavators (Tombs, Buckingham and Hancock, 2008).Working in such narrow orebodies presents particular operational and geomechanics challenges. Anglo Gold AshantiÆs Sunrise Dam operation is located in Western Australia approximately 55 km south of the town of Laverton. Currently, the mine is producing from both its open pit and underground operations and is planning a significant step change in underground production as the pit phases out. The mine ventilation system is arranged in three independent ventilation districts: Astro, GQ and Cosmo. The future ventilation infrastructure requires significant upgrades to keep up with the increased tonnage. In the short term, increased production is planned for the GQ district as well as for Vogue, which is an extension in the Cosmo ventilation district. In the long term, however, Vogue is likely to become the centre of attention for mining activity.This paper explores several ventilation scenarios which include upgrading the existing fan stations, rentals, establishing a common ventilation backbone, and establishing new upcast infrastructure for GQ to support the short-term production increase. These developments were modelled using ventilation network simulation software to determine airflow distribution and fan operating points for each option. For the GQ area, with its short-term increase in production, each option is evaluated for total owning cost by considering capital and operating costs over a three-year period. For Vogue, which is to become the main focus of mining in the future, a different strategy is followed in analysing the ventilation requirements. Instead of considering different short-term options, a number of staged upgrades are considered to achieve the desired production rates.This paper summarises the planning criteria, airflow requirements, ventilation infrastructure requirements, and economic analysis associated with the conceptual ventilation system design. Schalker Eisenhütte und Maschinenfabrik GmbH, Nordic Minesteel Technologies and Bombardier Transportation have developed an evaluation tool that considers the main cost drivers of the rail, truck and conveyor haulage systems on the market today. In almost every circumstance, the advantages of a haulage solution are clear. A haulage system is outlined that is fully automated, including driverless operation, and that provides increased tonnage, safety and equipment life and reduced maintenance downtime. Western Australia has often been referred to as the fly-in, fly-out capital of the world. Fly-in, fly-out is a commonly used practice in Western Australia due to the geographic size and isolated location of the vast resource projects. In the State today, approximately half of all resource sector employees operate on a fly-in, fly-out basis, with a minority utilising drive-in, drive-out arrangements. fly-in, fly-out arrangements are generally beneficial from a sustainability perspective, delivering significant economic, social and environmental benefits to regional communities, the State and nation as a whole. Skills shortages and labour supply issues mean that the industry will be required to discover new ways of attracting and retaining employees, one of which is the adoption of fly-in, fly-out work journey arrangements. By 2015, the minerals sector in Australia will need to employ 70 000 more employees than it currently employs to achieve predicted increases in output. Of the 70 000 additional employees required, 42 000 will be required in Western Australia, almost 15 000 in Queensland and approximately 5000 in both New South Wales and South Australia. The fly-in, fly-out lifestyle as a preferred method of employment should be recognised as a valid lifestyle choice by all members of the community, offering a profound improvement in the quality of life for large numbers of employees and family members. It should be acknowledged that whilst fly-in, fly-out is a preferred option for many companies and their employees, individuals who make a choice to engage in fly-in, fly-out must balance the difficulties associated with the work û isolation and separation from family and friends û against the economic and lifestyle benefits that the work offers. This paper aims to illustrate the significant steps that the resources sector has taken to facilitate the fly-in, fly-out choice by ensuring that the commute option is a safe, attractive and manageable work journey arrangement.

The Clogau St DavidÆs gold mine has a recorded production of around 81 000 oz Au and it is the largest mine in the Dolgellau gold-belt and BritainÆs most prolific historical producer. The original mine was first worked for copper, however; in 1854, gold was found in waste material from the St DavidÆs section. In recent times the mine has operated intermittently between 1983 - 2007. The principal black shale-hosted gold-bearing reef (Main Reef) can be traced for about 3 km, striking approximately NE-SW and dipping steeply between 60¦ - 90¦ SE. The reef system pinches and swells, changes strike and splits into a number of smaller branches. Reef width is variable, ranging from over 6 m to a few cm and in places reducing to small irregular blobs. The reef is internally complex and composed of swarms of narrow (1 - 300 mm) subparallel veins separated by country rock sheets. The gold-bearing veins within the reef package are discontinuous; though generally possess bonanza grades running 10s - 100s oz/t Au. It has historically been shown that some gold-rich vein segments can grade up to 300 oz/t Au. The predictability of the gold-rich segments is poor, but has been shown to be related to presence of the Clogau (black shale) Formation, and/or the mechanical interactions of the reef with greenstone sills, reef branching and splitting and/or cross-fractures to form ore shoots.
