The mining industry uses many types of mineral and metallurgical plants to produce saleable product from ore mined. Plant design history has left current operations with a mixture of manual operation and various forms of automated process controls. Consequently, we typically see high-variability in the continuous operations together with a shortfall in the attainment of full capacity or higher utilisation of consumables.At a level of best practice, ‘operational performance excellence’ focuses on process control, using automation and control systems to deliver process optimisation. This more sophisticated delivery is a great deal more difficult than the first stage of equipment selection/installation. It includes the appropriate selection of the right instrumentation and control system, key process knowledge, individuals with a solid control engineering background/experience and the essential backing/support of the operations management team together leading to higher-value delivery. Robust solutions can be realised, considerably minimising process variation, thus leading to process optimisation. This approach results in an easier, efficient and safer process while providing considerable returns for the plant owners.How variable are your processes, and do you maintain optimised process performance with dedicated resources, modern instrumentation, ‘best practice’ control systems and performance monitoring tools? In this paper, these questions and their possible answers are discussed.I say we can do much more and be ‘more efficient’ in our efforts to remain competitive. This paper discusses the operating model within Endeavour Mining Corporation regarding the options of owner mining against contract mining. It’s based on the concept of ‘are we carrying out the most efficient mining’ regarding cost and performance. This question can only be answered through an extensive contract mining tender process and conducting a comprehensive comparison to evaluate the transition viability. Karma mine, located in Burkina Faso, is the subject of this paper. The Tender model included sales of equipment, parts and tooling associated with the traditional Load and Haul Schedule of Rates (SOR). The methodology focused on the structure of the tender process, which consists in the development of a SOR based on haulage profiles and mining schedule. This is a new Endeavour framework that allowed the bidders to compete on an even level. This was performed using a systemic analysis which encompassed all the elements involved in a transition such as the Human Resources (HR), taxes and customs implications, directs and non-direct costs (Finance and interest on assets, depreciation, insurance), contractor risk profiling. It was assessed against the normalised internal pricing tender-based. This paper gives an insight into how a West African mining operation addressed the sensitivities of the HR functions against the commercial aspects. This was one of the most successful transitions in West Africa and was carried out during the COVID crisis. The outcome of this project has created value by detailing a lesson learned model for both commercial and HR aspects. This discusses the commercial comparisons along with the internal model with the underlying HR functions as a risk factor that could have jeopardised the continuation of the operation. This resulted in a smooth transition with the additional cash flow generated by the sale of the parts and equipment turned Karma into a viable operation.

The theory of froth flotation developed slowly, in almost all cases lagging behind practical developments in the operation of flotation processes. This was largely the result of a lack of understanding of the required basic principles of chemistry and physics, many of which were being developed at the same time. A review of some of the early theories propounded is worthwhile, and should encourage those who are presently studying or practicing flotation to exercise some care in claiming a complete understanding of the underlying phenomena in the art. This paper considers theories presented up to and including those in Principles of Mineral Dressing by Antoine M Gaudin (1939). Of course, developments since that time are important, but they are beyond the scope of this discussion.

The single track North Strathfield Rail Underpass (NSRU) consists of a dive structure either end of a 148 m long driven tunnel skewed under three live railway tracks. The tunnel is 8 m high, 9 m wide, with a horseshoe profile, excavated by full face using a road header. Ground cover varied between 2.5 m to 3.5 m. Settlements were 5 mm to 15 mm (the latter due to a dyke). A one pass synthetic fibre reinforced shotcrete lining was installed (no lattice girders or steel sets were used). A system of automated robotic total stations was used to provide real time monitoring of the rail track and associated ground formation. Addressing community concerns in relation to an economic activity, particularly when it causes significant community impacts, is especially important for the development of extractive industry projects. Pipelines comprise an integral part of many hydrocarbon developments, which may cause different effects on local economic development, communities and the environment compared with open cast mines. This paper explores community impacts associated with a case study of the oil pipeline æEastern Siberia-Pacific OceanÆ in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Russia. Based on semi-structured interviews, conducted in 2006 - 2008 in Russia, the paper investigates claims of local communities about potential impacts of the pipeline development of their environments and economic activities as well as community claims for greater involvement in sharing the benefits from this major infrastructure project. A community of Indigenous people, Evenk, is likely to be most profoundly affected by the development due to impacts on their traditional activities such as hunting and reindeer herding. The paper examines in detail the regional economic, social, environmental and Indigenous peoples concerns over the construction of the oil pipeline and investigates actions and methods adopted by community organisations to voice their concerns about the pipeline development. Finally, the paper assesses the process of interaction between the pipeline developers and regional stakeholders.

"Surface support is a key component of most ground support systems which are applied as a means of reducing the risk of rockfall occurrence and maintaining serviceability of mine development. Surface support has two primary functions: distributing the applied load throughout the system by providing connection between rock bolts retaining smaller rocks that unravel between rock bolts.Confinement is also provided to the rock mass, which may increase its capacity to resist further degradation or loosening.Surface support has been routinely installed in most underground mines around the world for many years, yet the operators are still not always certain which type is best suited for deformable ground conditions. A number of factors need to be taken into consideration prior to selecting the type of surface support liner, such as its capacity, availability, practicality of installation, manual handling and loading conditions (static or dynamic) to ensure the system’s optimal performance in terms of safety and costs.This paper presents an overview of the surface support types currently used in underground mines in Australia. Shotcrete, weld mesh, high-tensile chainlink mesh, reinforced weld mesh and high energy absorption (HEA) mesh are discussed. A detailed description of each system is provided in terms of capacity, energy absorption, installation cycle and costs. The cost of each system has been normalised to the units of energy absorbed. Carbon sequestration in planted forests provides an immediately available, low cost option to address the greenhouse impacts of coal mining and coal utilisation in a carbon constrained world. In addition, planted forests also offer the opportunity to address other environmental issues, particularly salinity and loss of biodiversity. Given salinity is characteristically associated with agriculture in the 500 to 700 mm rainfall belt, then where such forests can also produce commercial timber products, they offer the additional opportunity to establish new, diversified rural employment in both timber growing and processing. In the majority of Australian catchments affected by salinity, where rainfall is generally less than the 700 mm limit to conventional forestry, and where groundwater reserves are often saline, the objective of achieving economically viable forestry production presents a significant challenge. In 1996, Saltgrow commenced a collaborative breeding program to combine the salt and stress tolerance of E camaldulensis, with the growth rate, stem form and wood properties of the commercial species, E grandis and E globules. This program aimed to produce trees with the potential for commercial rehabilitation of saline landscapes. Results covering a range of site conditions from SaltgrowÆs network of over 100 trials around Australia are presented. The opportunity for commercial plantations integrated with agriculture in low to medium rainfall areas to address salinity and sustainability will be discussed. In addition, the significant potential for partnerships between land-rich, cash-poor farmers, catchment management authorities seeking to invest in public good projects that enhance environmental sustainability, and major carbon producing industries with either mandated or voluntary requirements to curtail net emissions will also be discussed.

Belt conveyor transfers are the most likely location for high wear rates and failures. Belt transfers are necessary to change the direction of conveyed material and will remain a part of belt conveyor systems into the future. Burden being accelerated due to fall and changes in direction from one system to the next, prevents steady state flow which introduces component fatigue. The conveyor belt is considered the greatest cost item over the life of a belt conveyor system and consumes considerable downtime to replace, therefore a financial incentive exists to preserve this high-cost item. Other issues created at the transfer include health risks of uncontained dust and product losses due to spillage. Additional consideration to support the belt is one way to improve the life of components and contain dust within the transfer chute. The humble impact cradle/bed has changed little over the years whilst conveyor systems have achieved ever greater flow rates. Further development of the impact cradle is an opportunity to reduce maintenance costs and increase uptime. The peak technology on the market for conventional impact belt support is the dynamic impact cradle, which ensures the belt support area under the chute allows for some dynamic travel, whilst also maintaining a consistent skirt board area. The impact energy at a transfer when installed with Kinder Australia’s dynamic impact belt support system was measured to further understand the forces involved and how they compare with static belt support systems. Adding further dynamic capacity to the load zone has been shown to increase belt life by at least 30 per cent. Other components also benefit from reducing impact energy in the transfer and the incorporation of polyurethane bushes at roller supports has been employed further increase roller and frame life. Kinder Australia has developed a unique and innovative range of belt support technologies that further promote dynamic travel whilst maintaining a consistent skirt board area without a significant increase in belt-friction tension. This technology combines slider rails with rollers that can absorb impact independently within the support system and/or utilising exotic slider materials to overcome high belt speeds and/or system capacities. The Kiirunavaara mine is a large-scale (28 Mt/a) iron ore mine located in northern Sweden. The mine is owned and operated by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB) using sublevel caving (SLC). The SLC area underlies an open pit decommissioned in the 1950s, the current main SLC haulage level is situated at an depth of 1100 m. The main orebody dips 60 degrees to the east with a distinct boundary defining the hanging wall to the east and footwall to the west. Since the 1980s damage has been observed both in the footwall rock mass as well as on the footwall crest of the open pit. Recent investigations indicate that the underground footwall damage is primarily controlled by large-scale slope failure mechanisms. Structurally controlled near-vertical planar shear failures in the upper footwall appear to be driven or facilitated by a step-path like curved shear failure situated in a zone starting ca 250 m, and intersecting the SLC about 100 m above the active mining level. To confirm this failure evolution a pilot underground measuring system has been designed and installed to monitor the expected rock mass displacements indicated by numerical models based on the above mechanisms. The systems consists of 50 m time domain reflectometry (TDR) coaxial cables installed in the footwall both across and away from an estimated damage extent boundary to monitor shear movements along natural joint surfaces. The TDR installation is combined with long extensometers to facilitate differentiation between diffuse shear and rock mass normal expansion. Additionally, a low-tech system of tape extensometer lines are installed in drifts and stopes running perpendicular to the ore strike to monitor horizontal displacements in the infrastructure as the footwall ‘slope’ loses confinement during mining advance when the mined out areas are replaced by caved rock from the hanging wall.CITATION:Svartsjaern, M, Saiang, D and Mäkitaavola, K, 2016. THOSE who dabble in mining are no exception to the general rule that persons who know a little of a subject are apt to think that they know all about it. Some colour may be lent to the belief that anyone may succeed in mining when we hear stories ofsuccessful diggers and others who have accidentally dropped on to something good through no foresight on their part; but we seldom hear the contra account of the far larger number who fail. Those who go more thoroughly into the subject, and take up mining as a profession, know very well that it is not one that can be carried out successfully by rule of thumb, but when they point this out to the public they are credited with trying to make it a closed profession; and outsiders are for ever trying to find out the "trade secrets," at the same time spurning the main one, which is hard study, experience, and the ability to apply their knowledge. The average mining man is not rich. When he amasses a fortune it is generally through speculation rather than professional work, thought no doubt his technical knowledge may have assisted...

When used in suitable ground conditions, rock bolts can have advantages over other permanent tunnel lining solutions. Permanent rock bolts offer flexibility in tunnelling profile and rapid rock bolt installation can enable time and cost savings. There are also disadvantages when considering the suitability of rock bolts for permanent support installations. These generally concern achieving the specified durability requirement over the specified design life. By investigating alternate approaches to rock bolt installation, quality assurance (QA), monitoring and design life it may be possible to alleviate some of these concerns.The design and construction benefits that can be realised through the use of rock bolts are primarily related to reducing project program time. This time reduction could be realised if rock bolts are considered as a permanent solution, with the installation being completed as a part of the primary excavation cycle. Any reduction of the program could allow direct and indirect cost savings and in the case of a major project, allow the revenue stream to be realised earlier.Currently ambiguity exists where the treatment of rock bolts as permanent support components is inconsistent with that of (often identical) ground anchors, as utilised in stabilising cut and cover structures. The ground support design process, implementation and testing are generally similar, though the acceptance of rock bolts as long-term support elements is treated differently to ground anchors in technical specifications.This paper discusses some of the benefits available through the use of rock bolts. It offers different solutions to the concerns surrounding durability, including alternate approaches to installation, Quality Assurance practices and monitoring solutions. The selection of an alternate design life is also investigated as another means of alleviating concerns around long-term durability. The paper will also provide an indication of savings that could be expected through the use of rock bolts as part of a long-term support system.

The Tropicana deposit was discovered in 2005 after AngloGold Ashanti followed up an unexplained gold-in-soil anomaly. Discovered in a remote, barely-explored area of Western Australia not previously thought prospective for gold, Tropicana is the most significant gold find in Australia for more than a decade. The new, large scale open pit gold mining operation will produce an annual production of around 330 000 to 400 000 oz over a ten year mine life mining around 60 Mt/a.Process plant construction started in early 2012 and is due to finish in the December 2013 quarter. The mining contract was awarded to Macmahon Holdings (Macmahon) and mining commenced in July 2012 using conventional drill and blast, truck and excavator open cut methods.As a construction and start-up project in a greenfields location, the establishment of mining activities at Tropicana Gold Mine (TGM) involves the implementation of technical and operational systems, including the mining contract. Some of these systems and likely challenges were identified during earlier studies, while others were not foreseen until they were encountered. Alternatively, the time frames around implementation change depending on the changing knowledge of the project and industry environment. These systems include those common to the industry and those specific to the operation and location.This paper examines the implementation and development of a number of the systems specific to the establishment of mining operations, including the history, process and some outcomes. Although expected to be discrete systems to implement, they become interdependent. This paper highlights strategies used at the Barrick operated Kibali Gold Mine (KGM) to improve the drilling accuracy and blasting effectiveness for longhole open stoping. The mine currently uses Solo DL421 for the required stope drilling and has experienced an average deviation of 10 per cent. Strategies are raised to eliminate or at least mitigate the adverse effects of blasthole deviation and the impact of blasting induced effect at the stope faces including the stope crown. The integration of deviation trends in the design would allow the actual blastholes to be established within their required positions to then facilitate a proper energy distribution with the eventual production blasting. The implementation of stope undercutting reduces the hole length from 35 m to 30 m which in return decreases blasthole deviation by 3 per cent. Another strategy adopted to improve the drilling accuracy is to slow down the penetration rate with the use of several operating approaches, including 135 MPa percussion pressure, 65 rev/sec rotation speed and 17 MPa feed pressure. To this penetration rate, a constant k factor is applied to increase the rate when the bedding inclination is less than 45° from the horizontal or when the hole length is under 10 m. This reduces deviation by a further 4 per cent. Where the rock mass is highly jointed it is advised to use the average penetration rate over the entire length of the hole. Furthermore, the paper shows the effect of deviation on the blasting results through a prediction of fragmentation blasting model optimised with reduced deviation and highlights the effect of presplit mining and timing delay on the blasting effectiveness. Although the size pattern increases with deviation, a strategy pertaining to timing delay with blasting would be to align to the work of Grant (1990) where the optimum hole to hole delay is found to be between 7–10 ms/m of spacing, while the optimum delay between adjacent ring varied between 110–160 ms. Stabilisation of crowns and wings will perform with the implementation of presplit blasting.

Mill operators are entrusted to manage what are normally the largest capital assets on any mine site. Achieving maximum utilisation and lowest costs that drive operating margins are realised by applying well known fundamentals of good housekeeping and proactive (as opposed to reactive) maintenance programmes. Historically, maintenance and operations staff are bought in late during the construction stage and often do not have the time, know how or tools to put in place (let alone train the incumbent staff) a functioning maintenance system before commissioning starts. They then get drawn into a reactive maintenance paradigm as teething problems post commissioning are dealt with and day to day issues envelop the line tradesmen and supervisors. Additionally, even when some semblance of a planned maintenance system is established, it is often the case that over time personnel and cultural issues mask the development of problematic maintenance practices. As has been observed by the authors on many occasions, even when some basic programmed maintenance system is in place, the collection of maintenance data is often inaccurate, incomplete and not subject to analysis. The net result is of course a high incidence of machine failure leading to lower than expected availability, which ultimately translates to lower revenue and higher net maintenance costs. The time taken and the cost to repair a failed machine is always greater than the timely and planned repair of a worn machine.Upon review of a number of processing plants around the world, especially gold and small base metal operations, it is apparent that companies need to implement maintenance systems whereby the operators are not overwhelmed with data and can manage by exception. Inadequate or inaccurate data collection and analysis result in poor decisions being made and misguided actions taken. GR Engineering Services (GRES) has developed a system to enable the custodians of mining plant assets to make more effective and effective use of maintenance data by being able to focus on the indicators of plant deterioration and to programme concurrent maintenance activities to maximise plant availability and utilisation.This paper outlines the structures that can be employed to address the challenges of implementing a proactive asset management system. Organisations are starting to develop processes for achieving sustainability principles they have defined for their organisation. The foundation for these principles is now well accepted. The definition of a sustainability framework is a good starting point for any project. The delivery of the framework requires the organisation to think differently about how project objectives can be met. New tools are becoming available to help achieve the sustainability outcomes for the projects. This paper will examine the project building blocks that are necessary to ensure the sustainability framework can be achieved for the project. These include new approaches to decision-making processes and evaluation tools and when to apply them. An integrated approach with shared expertise to project delivery, which is applicable to the whole supply chain, will be discussed. This will cover sustainability procurement, integrated waste management, cleaner production and eco-efficiency, sustainable products and disposal. A project toolkit will be presented and some key project tools identified. The need for management support in undertaking these new approaches is critical, as is the need to develop partnerships and cooperative management to facilitate delivery.

In this paper, three types of value-adding in the minerals industry are discussed: downstream processing, improving the efficiency of existing processing and increasing the knowledge base and expertise of the staff. It is shown that, while downstream processing seems to offer a good way of improving Australia's trade position, there are a number of impediments to such development, notably, limited access to the appropriate technology and overseas markets. Transport costs can also be a problem. To reverse the situation will require more positive policies by government. In the meantime, something can be done towards adding value by increasing the efficiency of existing processes. Examples are given, showing how it might be possible to make economies in reagent costs in the gold industry, how innovative technology has led to more complete processing of a tailings dump, how research might lead to an increase in the throughput in the production of synthetic rutile and how it is possible to leach selectively from gold/copper ores.

After some 50 years of worldwide research in relation to coal pillar mechanics and design as well as numerous workshops and technical papers related to these issues there is still some significant disagreement as to the approach one should adopt in the assessment and design of a coal pillar. Of course there are many different types of coal pillars that fulfil a wide range of roles at any particular mine and in this instance it is appropriate to have a 'tailored' approach for each pillar type in relation to the role it fulfils. However where it can become very difficult for the mine operators is when various researchers or consultants use or recommend significantly different approaches for the same type of pillar fulfilling the same role. By 1999 two pillar design techniques had been developed specifically for the Australian underground coal mining industry (ie The University of New South Wales Pillar Design Procedure, UNSW PDP and Analysis of Longwall Tailgate Serviceability, ALTS) and several other pillar design techniques were being practiced by individual consultants. The Australian industry hoped to resolve the issue of what technique to use for each pillar type and role, when it funded UNSW in 2000 to develop a 'Systems Approach to Pillar Design'. The findings of the abovementioned project were published in 2005 and while every attempt was made by UNSW to include the views of various local and overseas researchers and consultants it would be fair to say that a unified approach to pillar design in Australia was not adopted as a result of that project. This is the experience of one country where there has never been one central group solely undertaking such research in relation to pillar design (such as the Chamber of Mines in South Africa). This paper explores the Australian experience in terms of pillar research and what that experience may offer to researchers in Australia and other countries. At the First Australasian Ground Control in Mining Conference (2003) the first 'update' of the ALTS Design Methodology (ie ALTS II) was presented. In subsequent years the ALTS database was continually updated and significantly expanded such that it now includes detailed information in relation to both the tailgate (148 cases) and maingate belt road (58 cases). In addition to tailgate roof support and chain pillar design, the current version of ALTS (referred to as ALTS 2009) includes a maingate belt road roof support design module. This paper is also intended to update and summarise the development and application of the ALTS Design Methodology for longwall gateroad design over the last decade both directly and in the context of coal pillar research conducted in Australia over the last 15 years.

Quay Magnesium Limited (QMG) listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in late September 2004 having raised approximately A$30 million with the object of designing, constructing, commissioning and operating a 15 000 tpa magnesium alloy production facility in Nanjing, China. Site construction commenced in February 2005, with installation of all major components completed by the end of October 2005. Hot commissioning was simultaneously commenced with the final stages of installation, leading to the first stage of continuous ingot casting by mid November 2005. Since that time, ramp-up to the name plate capacity has been undertaken. This presentation highlights some of the more significant technical and logistical hurdles that have had to be overcome in order to meet the high quality product specifications required by a range of QMG customers.
