The mineralogy of nickel slags from the flash smelter of Western Mining Corporation Ltd. at Kalgoorlie was studied. Residual magnesium silicates in the sulphide concentrates raise the melting point of the slag and result in the formation of magnesium-rich olivines. Addition of lime lowered the melting point, and, in slowly cooled slags, resulted in the formation of a pyroxene.Magnetite and sulphides were also present in all slags.The converter slags contained an olivine near fayalite in composition, together with wiistite, magnetite, and a little sulphide.Accretions from the hearth of the flash furnace were largely composed of magnetite with subsidiary olivine similar in composition to those of the flash furnace slags.Wall deposits, however, were largely composed of nickel ferrite and nickel-iron olivines.

The adverse health impacts from diesel particulate matter (DPM) exposure are a well-known global concern. The building evidence has triggered underground mining operations to review existing atmospheric conditions and assess the scale of the challenge faced. South32’s Cannington Mine (Cannington) evaluated the ability to provide a healthy atmosphere from a whole mine approach, taking into account existing preventative controls including: maintenance strategies, fuel quality, mining operations, ventilation provisions, monitoring protocols and effective education and training programs.During the evaluation process, Cannington gave due recognition to the advice and guidance provided in the Queensland Guidance Note 21 (QGN21), the Guidelines of New South Wales’ MDG29 and Mining Industry Advisory Committee (MIAC) of Western Australia. Each of these documents advises a dilution rate of >0.06 m3/s/kW is best for reduction of DPM exposure in underground mines.Achieving the prescribed mine ventilation rate typically results in the need to directly invest significant capital into increasing ventilation infrastructure in order to further dilute contaminants. In today’s economic market of volatile metal prices and increasing pressures to meet regulatory requirements, it can become challenging for established metalliferous operations to create a balance between optimisation of current ventilation infrastructure and capital outlay.In order to obtain and correctly justify the requirements for capital investiture Cannington conducted a ventilation operational analysis for the life-of-operation, identifying the existing air volume envelope was adequate for current and future production rates by optimising existing primary ventilation infrastructure through the implementation of a modified ventilation on demand (VoD) and air conservation system.This process achieved sustainable operating and capital cost reductions without compromising delivery of adequate ventilation to work areas. The process also recognised that engaging mine workers’ ownership of their work areas is crucial to maintaining a technically efficient and operationally robust ventilation system.This paper will concentrate on Cannington’s existing preventative controls, their implementation and their management for the prevention of increased DPM exposure; reducing the risk of both short and long-term health impacts to ‘as low as reasonably achievable’ (ALARA).CITATION:Black, J and Reid, D, 2017. The history of mill liners has evolved over time and this paper tracks the changes and development of liner technology. It provides an overview of the primary types of liners, the design and the materials of construction. The design of a mill liner is driven by application, materials of construction, casting technology and handling issues. The choice of solid steel, grid liners, rubber or composites and magnetic liners is based on many factors.The methods used for monitoring wear and predicting eventual change out time are many and varied. The contribution of discrete element modeling (DEM) analysis in predicting wear profile is discussed.Mill trajectory and DEM software programs are used with great effect to predict the effect of lifter height, face angle, high low lifters or mill speed. In the field, trial and operational experience is used or improvements/design concepts at one operation are applied to another. Broken mill lifters, accentuated wear and other problems can be better understood using hardness testing, chemical analysis and photo micrograph analysis of pearlitic or martensitic structure along with fracture face observations. This forms a part of the typical root cause analysis. However given correct and sound liner and lifter, feed and discharge design media selection, and materials of construction, the majority of premature liner or bolting failure is normally attributed to incorrect operational methods such as excessive high ball to feed ratio, incorrect mill speed relating to lifter ball throw, incorrect media selection, "tramp" material entering the mill charge from upstream or recirculating process and understanding the specific mill operation in question.It is hoped that this paper will benefit mill operators who are faced with challenges of improving wear life and at the same time optimizing mill throughput and performance.CITATION:Connelly, D and Thompson, C, 2013. The M2 Upgrade Project involved widening 15 km of the existing M2 Motorway, which is a key route in Sydney’s road network. The Norfolk Twin Tunnels in North Epping convey traffic over a 460 m length of the motorway. The project involved widening the twin tunnels to provide a third lane and breakdown lane in each direction.The widening of the tunnels was fundamentally different to other ‘greenfield’ tunnel projects in that the operation of the tunnel was maintained throughout construction, with motorway traffic permitted close to the excavation faces on a daily basis. The widened works had to integrate with the existing tunnel support, construction details, and mechanical and electrical infrastructure.The existing tunnel afforded the opportunity to review existing ground conditions in the tunnel. Exposures were mapped within the tunnel, and key design parameters were back-analysed from the original monitoring data to provide increased confidence in the assessed impact from the widening works.Traffic capacity of the tunnels was maintained by detailed staging of the works, and included the ability to reopen the tunnels at short notice.A permit to tunnel system was developed to manage the risks associated with re-opening the tunnel to traffic. A comprehensive suite of instrumentation was maintained to provide reliable monitoring data to support this process. Emphasis on the robustness and reliability of tunnel instrumentation provided increased confidence in the adequacy of the tunnel support being installed. The monitoring was routinely compared with design predictions to check the adequacy of the support measures being installed and confirm the design.The approaches and methodologies developed for the widening of the Norfolk Tunnels were effective in maintaining the safe operation of the tunnels throughout the two years of construction, and provide a framework for increasing the capacity of existing tunnel infrastructure in the future.CITATION:Clarke, S J, de Ambrosis, A L, Bertuzzi, R and Redelinghuys, J, 2014. Education in Australia now has to respond to a very wide political and policy agenda. The political emphasis is upon increasing participation and retention rates with a view to greater graduation rates in `high-tech' disciplines. There is an implied linkage between `education' and `economic well-being'. Our argument is that equalitarianism in education tends towards mediocrity. In this context many Geoscience educators view the future with pessimism. The argument is that science has been `sold short' and needs revitalising. We contend that Geoscience coursework should be a feature of both secondary and tertiary education in Australia. To this end we propose six policy initiatives to increase the content of Geoscience in education programmes.

This paper describes the results of the field application tests at Miike Colliery on the integrated automatization of the longwall mining system for medium thick coal seam. The purpose of the research is to develop an automatic longwall mining system which can be controlled accurately from outside of the face, and the ultimate goal is an eliminate of men from the face. Presently, the field test is being conducted in Yotsuyama mine following to a success in the performance test on surface. Remote Batch Control System for shield supports has been adapted to operate all supports from the control panel located at the entrance of the face. Remote monitoring and control system of the drum shearer has also been tested. The system makes it possible to operate the shearer either at the main gate or full automatic. Productivity and safety will be substantially improved as those systems enable to eliminate all workers from the face under the severe working conditions with high ground pressure and hot and humid atmosphere due to increasing mining depth. So far, we have been satisfied with the results of the field test and those system will be an effective countermeasure to operate the face with a high risk of rock-burst.

Magnesite-rich and dolomite-rich ores from the Savage River region of Tasmania are being considered as potential feed material for a commercial process for production of magnesia.Two selected samples have been characterized by chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, and differential thermal and thermogravimetric analysis. The materials differ in calcination behaviour, with magnesite decomposing at a significantly lower temperature than dolomite. Calcination conditions have a marked effect on the rate and percentage of magnesium dissolved as the bicarbonate when slurries of the calcine are leached with carbon dioxide. From a process point of view, the feed should have the highest possible magnesite/dolomite ratio, while the optimum calcination conditions are determined by the behaviour of the magnesite component of the feed.From batch calcination tests, it is apparent that the optimum calcination conditions for magnesite-rich ore are a temperature in the vicinity of 700°C and a calcination time of one hour.

Silver and gold bearing ore from the Troy Resources NL Casposo Gold-Silver Project, located within the San Juan Province of Argentina contains a complex mix of gold, silver, electrum and silver sulphides in the ore. Casposo is a typical low sulphidation epithermal style gold–silver deposit where mineralisation is hosted within rhyolite – andesite flows and breccias. Veins are typically banded quartz–chalcedony colloform - crustiform banded with quartz - carbonate infill. Mineralisation is associated with an assemblage consisting of quartz, chalcedony, adularia, calcite, illite, sericite and trace sulphides. Gold and silver occur as electrum, native silver, sulfosalts and silver sulphides. This paper presents a case study that describes the process selection, development and engineering of a tailored process plant for the recovery of gold and silver from this ore.The original feasibility study, modelling, metallurgical testwork and engineering studies are outlined. The final flowsheet was based on minimising capital cost, operability, recovery and minimising technical risk.The process flowsheet uses the traditional Merrill Crowe route because of the high silver to gold ratio in the feed and achieves maximum gold and silver recovery while providing a common facility for future ore body treatment.

When the mining and milling of 1100 copper orebody commenced at Mount Isa a satisfactory grade of copper concentrate was difficult to produce. The major concentrate contaminants were fine pyrite and silica, particularly in the minus 10 microns fraction. Studies of the 1100 orebody showed that much of the fine grained pyrite and a proportion of the silica present in the ore contained carbonaceous matter in the form of complete or partial rims and as internal carbon films disseminated throughout grains. The hydrophobic surface property of the carbonaceous material resulted in inherently flotable fine pyrite and siliceous particles.The addition of a 60:40 mixture of nigrosine and dextrine, initially to a prefloat concentrate of the inherently flotable carbonaceous material and finally to the total copper flotation feed, successfully controlled the flotation rates of the carbonaceous pyrite and silica. The objective of a 25 per cent Cu concentrate grade was then achieved without decreasing copper recovery.

A hidden asset in most exploration and mining activities is data. Common practice involves the spending of large amounts of money to discover, define and prove the viability of a mining project. Some organisations have used operations research analysis and internal costing methods to allocate a value to their data and to compare the costs of data maintenance to other more tangible activities like plant and equipment maintenance. Those organisations, which do not undertake such an analysis often, have little knowledge or understanding of the extent and the worth of their data. Often the organisations lack of knowledge and understanding of the data is indicated by their failure to fully exploit or realise their opportunities. The focus of this paper is to discuss new technologies that optimise the management and security of collected and derived data. The technologies discussed are components of the software systems acQuire and MineSight.

The importance of reducing the moisture content of fine coal, the nature of the retained water, and the means of its removal are discussed. A statistical technique, using a balanced block design, was used to isolate the significant factors determining water content of a coal filter cake. The most significant factor was particle size distribution. A simplex evolutionary operation (evop) was used to determine the optimal quantities of additives required to produce the lowest moisture content for a selected coal size. For this optimum condition (18·6 Ib H20 per lOO Ib dry coal), additions of 0·045 Ib magnesium ion, 0·0026 lb Separan AP30, and 0·098 Ib Aerosol OT, per lOO Ib dry coal were required. The work illustrated the uses of a statistical evop technique for the determination of optimal conditions in industrial research projects.

Digital optical microscopy (DOM) and automated SEM-based (ASEM) mineralogy systems (MLA, QEMSCAN) have experienced significant developments within the last decade. However these developments have been independent from each other and the two mineralogical techniques have so far not yet been integrated to combine the strengths and technical benefits of both analytical platforms. This detailed comprehensive mineralogical information is critical support for geometallurgy.Major hardware and software advances in DOM in the last few years have provided important new capabilities with potential applications to automated mineralogy. These technological advances have been largely driven by sectors outside mining (eg medical pathology) and have not yet been widely adopted within the minerals industry. The advent of DOM offers significantly more automated mineralogy capabilities than traditional expert-mineralogist driven optical microscopy. This is based on advances in automated image acquisition, high resolution cameras for digital imaging, imaging of large areas through mosaic options, integration of multiple layers and application of advanced image analysis techniques.Ongoing research involves combining the outputs of DOM and ASEM-based microscopy to create new capabilities for integrated microscopy based on development of advanced cross-platform image fusion and data integration between DOM and ASEM (exploiting the benefits of both analytical platforms). This requires non-linear image registration and transfer of mineralogical identification from ASEM to DOM systems using sophisticated image manipulation and data analysis software.Examples will be given of image fusion and data registration for a range of different ore types. Image fusion techniques are demonstrated using a porphyry copper deposit sample where sulfides and precious metals are classified using the MLA and gangue mineralogy obtained from DOM images. Data integration enables creation of a library containing optical property variability information for minerals identified by the MLA; thus reducing the reliance on skilled mineral identification by supplementing human interpretation

Most aspects of process design are best addressed via bench scale or pilot plant scale test work. However, as experience is gained, fundamental or indicative data can provide more than adequate information to manage the risk associated with some process aspects of concentrator design.Historical precedence exists where minimal design test work has resulted in successful projects. On many occasions benchmarking, sometimes supported by fundamental data such as mineralogy, has been used to successfully develop effective process plant outcomes. Of course, this style of approach is most common with æfast trackÆ projects and often comes with the usual surprises that result from inadequate geometallurgy to define the project cash flow.This paper explores the risks and opportunities associated with the various facets of process development and design for a base metals concentrator. "Best practice for acid rock drainage (ARD) risk assessment still relies solely on the geochemical properties of sulfidic rocks and mineral processing products, despite the fact that a rockÆs tendency to produce acid also depends on mineralogy and texture. Consequently, there are a plethora of geochemical tests routinely utilised by the mining industry to predict ARD formation. Due to limitations associated with these tests and their relatively high costs, analysis of recommended best practice sample numbers is rarely achieved, reducing the accuracy of waste management plans. Our research addressed this through examining the application of geometallurgical data for predicting acid formation, and led to the identification of potential environmental geometallurgy indicators.Samples obtained from an iron-oxide copper gold deposit were subjected to the geochemistry-mineralogy-texture (GMT) approach, an improved methodology for classifying acid forming potential. GMT results were compared against geometallurgical and assay data sets to evaluate: relative carbonate content measurements (measured by HyLogger) and identify how these could be used to calculate effective acid neutralising capacity mineral hardness (measured by EQUOtip) to determine application of this data for calculating lag-time to acid formation opportunities to automate the acid rock drainage index (ARDI) using classified images produced by a GEOTEK logger and automated microscopy.Links between the GMT approach and geometallurgical data sets were identified. Classified mineralogy data has application at stage one, HyLogger and EQUOtip at stage two and computer-based ARDI evaluations of classified images at stage three. Through such integration, ARD characterisation costs can be reduced, with value added to geometallurgical data sets. Furthermore, deposit-wide ARD domaining is possible, and acquisition of total-orebody knowledge more likely. During the 1980s and early 1990s low cost gold treatment plants were at the forefront of the Australian engineering and mineral processing business. This opportunity was the result of a high gold price and innovative design by emerging engineering companies in an expanding market. The low cost approach to gold plant design and project execution resulted in smaller and shorter life projects becoming viable and the multiplicity and fast track approach of the projects resulted in sharp learning curves. From the mid 1990s to the early 2000s the relatively low commodity prices and resultant reduction in minerals opportunities also resulted in innovative design in both small and large plants, albeit on a reduced scale. The innovation was associated with alleviating capital cost pressures for large capacity low-grade (eg NewcrestÆs Cadia) or small-scale (eg JubileeÆs Cosmos) projects to either improve NPV or to enable the project to be won and profitable in the competitive lump sum environment. Between 2004 and 2008 the engineering market became less competitive from an engineerÆs perspective due to the high demand for engineering services in a high price commodity market. The need for innovation remained but was driven overtly by shortages in water, power and personnel and long equipment lead times. This paper discusses some of the factors that contribute to the capital cost of a project and the scope for improving the likelihood of financing and increasing the project net present value (NPV). Case studies with recent large copper concentrator projects will be used to demonstrate how a value driven approach to project and plant layout can result in significant improvement in NPV.

The works of Metal Manufactures Ltd are situated at Port Kemblam NSW, within a few hundred yards of a deep-water harbour. At present they occupy about 26 acres, and ample provision has been made for future extensions. Rail connection exists between various parts of the Works and the main South Coast Railway, the harbour jetties and the adjacent copper refinery of The Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Co Ltd. A plan of the works is shown in Fig 1.The company was incorporated in March 1916, and commenced production of copper wire in June 1918. Early in 1920, tube manufacture was undertaken, followed by telephone cable mnufacture in 1923. Today the Works consist of five principal sections: Founrdy, Tube Factory, Wire Factory, Cable Factory and Case and Drum Factory. Whilst the last four are engaged in producing the finished materials for despatch from the Works, the first-mentioned is engaged in producing copper, brass, and other non-ferrous billets for use in the Tube and Wire factories. In addition, there are Engineering and Metallurgical Departments supporting the manufacturing sections, and in these, as well as in all other sections of the Works, extensions have been carried out from time to time to provide for increased output and new types of products.

The bulk of Australia's uranium resour- ces was delineated in the last 18 years when a total of $563 million (1984 dollar values) was spent on uranium exploration. Australia's share of the low-cost Reasonably Assured Re- sources in the World Outside the Centrally Planned Economies Area (WOCA) increased from 1.5% in 1967 to 29% by the end of 1984 and its share of the low-cost Estimated Additional Resources (Category I) then stood at 25%. As of December 1984, Australia's uranium resour- ces were estimated by the BMR to be: Cost range US$80/kg U (US$30/lb U301) Reasonably Assured Resources 463 000 t U Estimated Additional Resources(I) 251 000 t U Cost range US$80-130/kg U (US$30-50/lb U308) Reasonably Assured Resources 63 000 t U Estimated Additional Resources(I) 126 000 t U The increases in Australia's resources was sustained by a group of large and rela- tively high-grade deposits which were disco- vered during the period 1969 to 1975. Austra- lia's share of the low-cost resources was also enhanced by a contraction of WOCA's low-cost resource base due to escalation of production costs for smaller low-grade deposits. Most of Australia's uranium resources are contained in the Proterozoic unconformity- type deposits of the Alligator Rivers uranium field and the stratabound deposit at Olympic Dam on the Stuart Shelf. Most of the remain- der of Australia's uranium resources is con- tained in calcrete-type deposits. Less than 10% of Australia's uranium resources are in sandstone-type deposits. Total Australian production to the end of 1984 amounted to 26 241 t U, representing 3.4% of WOCA's cumulative production. Aus- tralia's share of WOCA's annual production has steadily increased from 1.3% in 1977 to 11.2% in 1984 (4390 t U). The increases in Austra- lian production took place in the face of reductions of production in WOCA countries, principally the US, from a record level of 43 988 t U in 1980 to about 39 000 t U in 1984. New low-cost production centres, mainly in Australia and Canada, have partly compen- sated the decline in US production. The Department of Resources and Energy (1985) reported that Australian exports of yellowcake are expected to reach 10 000 t U308 (8480 t U) by 1993/94, representing an in- crease of about 13% oer annum.

The short process of electric furnace steelmaking with direct reduction iron (DRI) as raw material is an important process for smelting high-quality and special steels. In order to prepare high-quality DRI, the pellets with basicity of natural basicity and 0.4 were prepared from magnetite concentrate (MR=0.09, MR=0.4) and hematite concentrate (HR=0.02, HR=0.4). Based on the HYL method, the gas-based direct reduction experiments were conducted under the condition of rich hydrogen (H2/CO = 2.6). The reduction index (RI), reduction swelling (RSI), cold compressive strength (CCS), and phase changes of the pellets were systematically studied. The results show that the RI of four kinds of pellets is greater than four in the temperature range of 800~950°C. For the magnetite pellets, at a fixed reduction temperature, the RSI increases and then gradually decreases, reaching a peak between 50 per cent and 80 per cent. Moreover, the RSI enhances with the increase of the reduction temperature. In general, the RI, RSI, and reduced CCS of the MR=0.09 pellets are better than those of the MR=0.4 pellets. For the hematite pellets, the maximum RSI decreases from 23 per cent to 17 per cent during hydrogen-rich reduction, while the compressive strength increases from 500 to 1070 Nꞏpellet-1. The main reason is that the glass phase generated by the increase of basicity adheres to the surface of hematite grains, hindering the contact between reducing gas and particles. As a result, the apparent activation energy is reduced, which is not conducive to the reduction process. In addition, the glassy phase attached to the hematite reduces the migration rate of Fe2+/Fe3+, resulting in a difference in the reduction expansion rate of hematite in the inner and outer layers of the pellet. Thus, concentric cracks are formed inside the pellets, the RSI increases and reduced CCS decreases.

The Murray Basin is being heralded as the next major mineral sands province in Australia. Already exploration programs have delineated extensive commercial deposits and several companies are progressing with plans to produce zircon, rutile and ilmenite in the Basin. As these deposits are developed consideration will need to be given to several key issues of the Murray Darling Basin; the availability of fresh water and management of salinity in the area being two of them. In this paper ideas being developed in CSIRO that link the processing of mineral sands with the salinity problem in the Basin are presented. The proposal presented here is to process saline water to produce industrial minerals with large volume applications and to produce value-added products from the mineral sands in the Basin using reagents produced from the saline waters. Processes to produce titania pigment and zirconia consume chlorine, caustic soda, soda ash and hydrochloric acid, all derivatives of salt (sodium chloride). There may be a good economic incentive if these processing plants were located in the close vicinity of each other.

McArthur River Mine, in the Gulf Country of the Northern Territory, exploits one of worldÆs largest deposits of zinc, lead and silver. It was officially opened in September 1995, 40 years after its discovery in 1955. This paper describes the geological, engineering and metallurgical assessments which made up the feasibility study. It then relates how these study components compare with the first two years of operation. The challenges that had to be overcome before the McArthur River Mine became economically viable included the metallurgical problems associated with extremely fine grained ore and the development of an effective mining process.
