The placer gold industry has experienced a roller-coaster history incorporating four major boom eras. The first, 'hand-methods' boom arose in the mid-19th Century from application of an old idea in new places around the globe. The subsequent hydraulic mining, bucket dredging, and 'hydraulic excavator-portable plant' booms each arose from application of new ideas in old places around the globe, ie in places where gold had been found during earlier booms. The new ideas that heralded the second, third and fourth booms were all significant advances in excavation technology. These enabled the industry to target the known deposits that were too deep, too wet, too small, or too low-grade for recovery by earlier boom methods. Relatively few new deposits or new deposit styles arose from the 'history book' exploration approach, so the number of known deposits to which each of the boom methods were applicable was limited. Consequently, the first three booms were each followed by significant periods of industry decline, and the fourth boom is currently waning inNew Zealand. Further decline is not inevitable and can be avoided by changing to a knowledge-based exploration approach similar to that adopted by the hard rock gold industry in the 1970s. Such an approach could easily herald the next placer gold boom.   Most of the relatively coarse, easily won alluvial gold in proximal and medial reaches of the active placer systems is gone. However, a substantial alluvial gold resource remains in the distal reaches of active systems, and in ancient placers formed onshore and on the continental shelf during previous sedimentary cycles. The resource in these deposits probably exceeds the total New Zealand placer production to date. Successful development of these placers requires application of robust geologic models for the formation and distribution of the placers through time, and advanced exploration technology that has not been used before in New Zealand. Nevertheless, the knowledge and technology required to explore and mine these deposits is available now. Many of these deposits contain a large proportion of problematic gold types that are difficult to recover with the commonly used gravity technology without sustaining significant losses. Despite advances in recovery technology in last few years, too much emphasis is placed on the incorrect assumption that gold size is the primary control on recovery efficiency. Other gold particle parameters, especially particle shape, exert a much greater control on whether gold will be saved or lost to the tails, and must be considered in the design of recovery technology and configuration of recovery circuits.

The E26 Lift 1 North Project took 37 months from the approval on 1st January 2019 to the commencement of production on 1st March 2022. This was five months ahead of the feasibility plan. When compared to the previous E48 Block Cave construction 12 years prior, which was of a similar size and design with ten extraction drives, crusher and conveyors, the E26 Lift 1 North project has been delivered at 29 per cent less capital cost. Key metrics achieved by the project include 12.7 km of development, 240 km of production drilling for drawbells and undercut blasting, 107 drawbells fired ready for production as well as only three Lost Time Injuries compared to 16 during E48 construction. The Lift 1 North Project Team has established a significant point of difference with the delivery being completed by the ‘Owners Team Model’ not Lump Sum or Turn-key. E26 Lift 1 North is now supplying the Northparkes processing plant for the next eight years. This paper discusses major milestones achieved throughout the process, modifications to processes from previous block cave construction at Northparkes as well as novel approaches to work to achieve the successful delivery of the project.

Diversity, equity and inclusion are often cited as ‘important priorities’ by mining companies and industry organisations in their public presentations and reports, but is the minerals industry really making strides forward? The mining industry is the least gender diverse industry in Australia (WEGA, 2023). Women make up just 22 per cent of the mining workforce and mining has a gender pay gap of 15.1 per cent (WEGA, 2024a). Only 8 per cent of the CEO roles are female and 20 per cent of boards have no female members (WEGA, 2023, 2024a). Gender diversity, equity and inclusion is a highly topical issue with the recent release of the Respect@Work report, Western Australia Parliamentary Inquiry as well as the publication of company specific workplace culture reports and the national legislative changes to implement a positive duty for organisations to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. This comes at a time of a skills and labour shortage in the minerals industry as well as declining geoscience study and participation. This is a perfect storm for our future workforce. Governments, industry associations, networks and companies are developing and supporting initiatives to make strides towards equity and inclusion, with some shining examples on both an industry and company level, but the dial is only moving slowly and, in some ways, going backwards. Every company is unique, but every company can review and support gender diversity, equity and inclusion. Actions to progress gender parity could include establishing a clear company position; ensuring that this position is cascaded throughout the company with appropriate training; reporting and reviewing gender participation as well as supporting positive workforce initiatives and a positive culture with a people-centric issues reporting process. At the industry level, there are clear gaps in the support for gender diversity and inclusion including a national voice and ‘one-stop-shop’ to support women in the industry and provide resources. Recommendations include improved co-ordination and collaboration of support for women as well as improved promotion of the suitability (and safety) of the industry for women. The new independent organisation, Women in Mining and Resources Australia (WIMARA) has the objective to address the challenges of gender diversity and inclusion as well as foster co-ordination, co-operation and collaboration between the different stakeholders and state or territory groups and amplify reach. To deliver the future workforce that the minerals industry needs, the time is now for the industry to make some giant leaps for womankind.

On the occasion of the 14th Mill Operators’ Conference and marking 40 years since the first one was held in Mount Isa in 1978, it is fitting to review the history of the Conference and its development over that time.The first 10 Conferences were irregularly held at three to four year intervals, with 9 of these in regional centres of Australasia. It is only since 2012 that the Mill Operators’ Conference has become a regular biennial event, alternating with the MetPlant Conference.The number of people attending the Conference has more than doubled to 470 delegates at the 13th one in 2016. It has outgrown its regional beginnings.Papers presented to the previous Conferences have been analysed according to commodity, country of origin, technology and theme plus the affiliation of the authors to discern any trends that may assist in planning the future events.Suggestions are made as to how the AusIMM might wish to arrange its mineral processing/metallurgical conferences.Recent changes to the structure of the Conference providing a more meaningful experience for the delegates and increasing their interaction and involvement should be vigorously pursued.CITATION:Munro, P D, 2018. Mineragraphy is a coined term to signify the field of microscopic investigation of ore minerals. The term is not euphonius and is sometimes regarded as superfluous because the subject is no more than an enlargement of the scope of petrology. In the past the practical field of petrology has been largely limited by the instruments which were designed for the study of rocks and' the microscopical properties of the transparent minerals. The addition of mineragraphy has been brought about by the use of the reflecting microscope and a totally different technique.The use of the petrological microscope, as it has been employed in the training oi geologists and mining engineers for nearly half a century, has been justified many times, not only in its application to general geological problems, but also in the more restricted field of the exploration and examination of ore deposits. It provides information of the gangue minerals and rocks associated with an ore body which is of great value in some mining fields. In cases where ore deposits occur selectively in certain favourable types of rock, the recognition and delineation of these rock types is a useful guide in prospecting. The Boulder Belt at Kalgoorlie forms one of the most striking examples in Australia where important significance is attached to different rock types, and the petrological microscope is essential to their elucidation.

AGL owns and operates the 2210 MW Loy Yang A power station and adjacent 30 Mt/a brown coalmine in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria. The mine is currently nearly 5 km long, more than 2 km wide at the operating face and up to 200 m deep. AGL employs a large workforce at Loy Yang and a substantial amount of services are performed on-site by contractors and consultants.GHD provides mine planning, earth sciences, civil/geotechnical engineering, dam surveillance, plant engineering and environmental services to AGL Loy Yang through an alliance framework. GHD is one of the world’s leading professional services companies operating in the global markets of water; energy and resources; environment; property and buildings; and transportation. In addition to GHD’s global footprint, the company also has a significant Victorian presence, including a permanent, well-resourced regional office in Traralgon, approximately 10 km from Loy Yang, as well as a permanent site office.A joint paper on the Loy Yang mine professional services alliance model was written for the AusIMM International Mine Management Conference in 2006 by Woods and Wood. Now ten years on, this paper provides an overview of the present relationship and arrangements, including the continued transformation of the alliance model and maturing of the relationship contract.These are challenging times, with increasing cost and regulatory pressure driving change in the broader energy and resources industry, and locally including both the mining and power sectors at Loy Yang. Flexible models to achieve a balance between internal personnel and access to key external skills, whilst achieving value for money and transparency, is increasingly critical. The right drivers and performance measures are essential, particularly when confronted with potential major technical and environmental risks (considering significant ground failure and fire events that have occurred elsewhere within the Latrobe Valley over the last decade) within a sector that is reducing costs and optimising production.This case study discusses the alliance status and changes, reasons behind adjustments and what the future is likely to hold. The paper also explores the validity of the original objectives and the extent to which they have been achieved. The philosophy of the alliance is to continue closely aligning the objectives of the two companies in the best interests of the Loy Yang site and immediate surrounds/stakeholders. Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data shows that since 2006 the balance of capital costs associated with mine development has become weighted greater than 75 per cent to enabling infrastructure and less than 25 per cent on process plant, equipment and machinery. The well-developed mine planning techniques including pit optimisation and scheduling and process plant design and optimisation have typically proceeded in a linear fashion from geology, mine planning, through processing, with some iterations back to the mine. Only then is attention paid to planning and costing of enabling infrastructure in any detail.Optimisation has typically involved developing cut-off grades, mine plans and schedules and ore processing that produces maximum economic ore. Infrastructure has then been sized æto suitÆ the mining and processing core business drivers.What the ABS data, together with global trends, indicates is that infrastructure can no longer be an afterthought if miners wish to achieve robust project value estimates, realistic ore to market costing and resource statements based on achievable economic cut-off grades.In addition, with such a large proportion of the costs originating from non-mining or processing activities, a mining operation can only be truly optimal if these aspects are given due consideration in the mine design stages, based on quality geometallurgical inputs so that the size and cost of enabling infrastructure is optimised to maximise project value.This paper outlines an iterative holistic approach to mining project development, which integrates the geometallurgical approach and enables infrastructure planning into project design and evaluation. It is proposed to consider a new access, mining and hoisting system for underground deposits, as an alternative to the commonly used decline or vertical shaft access. The proposed system offers fundamental improvements in gathering of exploration data, reduction of capital expenditure and significant savings in mine operating costs. The cost reductions are achieved through:superior orebody definition by Supersucker winzing on ore prior to the commencement of capital development; considerable reduction of capital development in waste; full capitalisation on all benefits of a raisebored excavation; introduction of rubber tyred skip and rubber tyred Mine Rapid Response Vehicle; introduction of simplified ore handling system and reduction of underground mobile diesel fleet; and introduction of minimum maintenance shaft concept. The system is applicable to deposits ranging from shallow, low dip angle, narrow vein, high-grade to bigger, massive type vertical mineralisations accessed from the surface, preferably from the bottom of an open pit; it is also suitable as a down dip extension of an existing underground mine. The system is highly conducive to mine automation and emerging trend aimed to increase the ratio of mined metal/mineral to mined waste. It offers substantial reduction in diesel exhaust gas emissions to the mine atmosphere.

An unprecedented growth in demand for coal exports has placed pressure on multi-user coal chains to guarantee that their capacity expansion projects will meet the required demand. These projects, however, are taking place in an increasingly complex commercial and technical environment - competing rail and coal terminal service providers as well as a myriad of competing mine operators, all needing to operate in an increasingly integrated manner to get the most out of expensive shared assets.Increasing system complexity and integration has driven the need for more holistic and sophisticated analysis tools. The capacity of coal chain subsystems, such as mine, rail and port, can no longer be determined effectively in isolation. Understanding the nature of the interactions between these subsystems, their sensitivity to uncertainty and the resultant capacity of the integrated system is the key to both maximising value and minimising risk.Recently, TSG has worked closely together with the Integrated Logistics Company and a number of key stakeholders in the Dalrymple Bay Coal Chain to develop independent system master plans. These master plans have provided a quantitative and rational assessment of coal chain capacity in its current state and a prediction of its capacity once a pipeline of committed capacity improvements is in place. For its Hellyer project, Aberfoyle sought to establish a high degree of confidence in all aspects of the feasibility study. Accurate capital and operating cost estimates were an integral and essential part of the study. They were crucial to the evaluation of investment returns and competitive cost position. Both the capital and operating cost estimates were based on the comprehensive data available from exploratory mine development, pilot plant operation, detailed engineering design, and Aberfoyle's experience in the area. One of the principal project objectives was to maximise operating productivity and efficiencies and this created capital cost alternatives which needed thorough cost-benefit assessment. The estimated capital cost for construction and development was $90 million, and the project was completed virtually on time for $80 million. The first year's experience indicated that operating costs would settle to well within 10% of the estimates.

"In 2015 operations under the ownership and/or management of all Newmont Mining Corporation subsidiaries (Newmont) produced 5.7 Moz of gold and 619 Mlb of copper from mining operations in five countries, with well over 100 Mt of ore processed by various grinding technologies. Processing methods used in the extraction of metals include flotation, oxidation, conventional cyanidation and heap leaching. The grinding technologies applied in milling operations feeding metal recovery processes include conventional wet grinding semi-autogenous grinding (SAG), rod and ball, dry grinding, concentrate regrinding and ultra-fine grinding, and ball milling of high pressure grinding roll product. SAG/ball (SAB) configurations represent the dominant comminution flow sheet within the company and the circuit configurations employed include SAB, SABC-A, SABC-B and single-stage (SS) SAG milling, with SAG mill feed ranging from run-of-mine (ROM) ore through to secondary crusher product. The collective experiences earned from designing, operating and debottlenecking these various comminution circuits provide many lessons that can be applied to the design and optimisation of future operations. Modern remote mining operations in Australia are more commonly trending towards fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) sites. This trend is driven by numerous factors including increased business centralisation, reduction in operating costs, and a desire to live in coastal cities that offer closer family networks and a greater diversity of facilities. Consequently, the resource development industry has had to adapt. When WMCÆs Mount Keith Nickel Operation commenced operations in 1994, it was developed as FIFO for its entire workforce. Since then, there have been several permutations of rosters within a 21 day compressed work cycle including the 14/7 cycle. This paper discusses a case study of the change in management process to the 9/5 work cycle focusing on minimising fatigue in the workplace. It includes the discussion of the business case, employee reaction and the practical application. The impact of the best practice change after 18 months is discussed.

Young professionals are riding the current wave of high demand for their services and relatively little competition for placements. The attraction and retention of quality incumbents has therefore become a significant strategic issue for companies in our industry. Money is important, but poorly structured career development and lack of learning opportunities can discourage the highest paid professionals from being enthusiastic and striving for excellence. This will inevitably lead to the search for a new position. Important factors at play include the young professionalÆs lack of understanding of career pathways and poor quality, or lack of, structured on-the-job training and professional development. Too often young and not so young professionals are faced with the reality that fabulous looking (and paying) jobs can be quickly reduced to the monotony of repetitive tasks in an isolating environment. While it is the responsibility of the incumbent to manage their own career and professional development, without experience, how is anyone meant to understand the importance of their roles and the options for career development? Mentoring is therefore essential to the strategic plans of every organisation and the strategic plans of every professional. Mentors will accelerate learning, guide decision making and develop both competency and confidence as they share their experience, both technical and regarding the machinations of a particular discipline, within our industry. Mentors need not be from the same organisation as the mentee and in some cases this may be a distinct advantage. This paper discusses mentoring as an opportunity for young professionals and mentors to initiate and maintain a supportive relationship, the responsibility of management to get mentoring right and the responsibility of young professionals to demand the opportunity for professional development through mentoring.

With the goal of reducing injuries and fatalities related to haul truck accidents, this research investigates technologies and intervention strategies for improving worker training using a virtual environment (VE). Funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), this research specifically focuses on training workers in preshift inspections of haul trucks to avoid preventable defects from causing worker injuries and expensive equipment damage. Improved training in these inspections is expected to increase uptime. The VE developed to train workers for preshift inspections consists of three phases: the virtual tour, the virtual inspection and the shift simulation. The virtual tour introduces information necessary to conduct a preshift inspection by guiding the worker around a haul truck, identifying parts to be inspected and explaining defects to look for. The virtual inspection assesses retention as the worker navigates around a haul truck and identifies defects. During the shift simulation, the worker is shown a simulation of the work shift, which animates severe consequences of any overlooked defects to emphasise the importance of preshift inspections. To provide multiple training platforms, desktop and CAVEÖ versions of the training VE were created. Flux Studio was used to model the environment and to produce Virtual Reality Modelling Language (VRML) files for the desktop version. DIVERSE, an application programming interface, was then used to implement a more realistic version of the VE in a CAVEÖ, a room-sized visualisation system. Initial feedback from mining colleagues indicates that the training VE may replace normal classroom training for preshift inspections in the future. As opposed to PowerPoint presentations and instructional videos, the training VE provides better spatial understanding of the location of parts and incorporates interactive features to actively engage drivers in the learning process, which may result in better retention. Initial feedback also indicates that minor improvements can be made to the virtual tour and virtual inspection phases.

There is a sense of geometallurgy being new; a new methodology for mining project development and improved operational strategy. One of the main challenges that any ænewÆ technology faces is a validation of the value and the need to produce case studies. However, producing case studies can often be problematic particularly given the long cycle from mineral deposit project, through feasibility and construction to stabilised operation of a mine.However, the roots of geometallurgy go back quite some time. Successful practices with geometallurgy can be seen from as early as the 1980s. Many times those practices were not called geometallurgy but something else and, in other cases, what can be seen are various components of the geometallurgical ævalue chainÆ.This paper will analyse a selection of published past practices from a geometallurgical perspective to demonstrate the value realised from the application of this methodology. The paper will then make some general comments on where this history of work in geometallurgy has lead us to and what are the challenges today for the geometallurgical effort.CITATION:S R Williams, 2013. For the last decade, we have read about the great technical innovation that is coming to the mining industry that will increase safety and productivity. There is consensus that it will be a technical innovation that will produce a step change in mining costs and outputs (as opposed to bigger machines or less people); however, this innovation (while freely available) has not taken hold in the industry. While there are a few mines that have embraced technology, the majority of underground mines simply do not have the expertise or technical capability to implement innovation and automation.With unexploited mineral deposits becoming deeper and more remote, and thus more hazardous to mine, telepresence offers the ability to remotely execute production tasks while separating personnel from hazards. As the technologies required to deliver telepresence mature, the potential for there to be no personnel underground during production activities is becoming a reality (the ‘dark factory’). So significant is the capacity of telepresence to mitigate risk, it is proposed that it be included as a separate entry in the hierarchy of hazard mitigation controls.Technical innovation such as the optimised short-term interval control of the production process and the automation of underground mobile fleets offer significant increases in production along with lower operating costs. This paper explores the most critical components for the successful implementation of technology in underground mining; redundant, robust and high-bandwidth communications networks to carry data from distributed networks of smart sensors and to convey teleoperation commands; and high-definition video to provide operators with detailed, real-time data. The days of analogue ‘leaky feeder’ as a base case for communications are over. The human resources required to support the expected wave of innovation are significant and will be difficult to maintain in remote areas as the same skills and expertise are in demand in other industries.The paper highlights barriers to innovation in the mining industry, and a lack of technical and scientific expertise within the industry to be able to identify, implement and manage technologies that can increase safety and productivity. As well, an over-reliance on basic net present value (NPV) financial analysis that is used in the industry punishes investment in technology (capital expenditure; CAPEX) and accepts higher operating expenditure (OPEX) due to the discounting of future savings in operating costs.CITATION:Cronin, J, 2017. With staff productivity and retention a crucial factor in the longevity of AustraliaÆs mining industry, some mining companies are increasing their focus on the health and well-being of their people, to minimise the risks of deteriorating health in an ageing workforce. Many of AustraliaÆs mining operations rely heavily on long distance commuter (LDC) rosters, which are argued to have a significant impact upon worker health, wellbeing and lifestyle choices. The potential impact of workforce health on mine safety performance, efficiency and operating practice is an interesting additional line of enquiry. Food choice, exercise and recreation initiatives offer living and working conditions that æempower healthy choicesÆ in the shift worker community, but do not guarantee improved worker wellbeing. This paper explores first-hand the experiences of one individual over two and a half years of employment at different mine sites, under different shift conditions and across different operating crews. The demand for iron-ore is ever increasing with the industry directly employing 60 500 people in a range of highly skilled roles in Australia. In the year 2019, the global iron-ore production was 2.85 billion tonnes. It is estimated that each tonne of beneficiated iron ore produces 400 kg of tailings. The IOTs are fine, dense and stable crystalline material mainly composed of iron oxides, alumina and silica. The current and most applied method of iron-ore tailings (IOTs) disposal is using subaqueous disposal of tailings in dams. The footprint generated by a tailings dam is massive and requires constant monitoring due to the possibility of a failure making the operation and maintenance of tailings dam extremely expensive. This review briefly discusses the known causes of tailings dam failures, their impact to the environment and day-to-day human life and potential applications of IOTs. The increase in water content enhances the pressure on dam walls. This in turn increases the liquefaction potential of the tailings and reduces the overall strength of the dam making it more vulnerable to failure. Potential applications of IOTs are in paints, aggregates in construction materials and bricks. In evaluating the installation of an in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) system for any mine, a number of options are available for each of the dig side, transport and dump side operations. Some of them are moreappropriate than others; given the pit arrangement, the material being handled and the rates at which it needs to be moved. This paper seeks to document the options that might be employed, and to rank them in terms of their applicability at any mine and their practicality overall, with a view to nominating those that would be most suitable for further study.

The valuation of early-stage exploration projects requires a valuer to take into account a large number of uncertain value drivers, the interplay among which may be non-linear. This paper examines some of the key value drivers including geology, target metrics, project area and maturity, the market and the psychology behind the decision-making process. The commonly accepted valuation methods and their underlying logic are outlined, including a view on why they evolved, what value drivers they attempt to address and their potential shortcomings. These methods include the multiple of exploration expenditure, geoscience rating, expected values and market based methods.
