"Most geologists and mining engineers, in the course of their professional careers, frequently become involved with the appraisal of metalliferous mineral deposits and develop a familiarity with and standard approach to the evaluation of these deposits. When the same individuals approach the industrial mineral field, however, their usual approach pattern can be rudely disturbed.This paper highlights the difference in appraisal approach and outlines the factors common to both but which have entirely different emphasis. These comprise geological appraisal, analytical requirements, the importance of transportation, marketing requirements and standards, including appropriate allowances for product development, and marketing penetration.Out of these ""different"" considerations, however, a pat-tern or standard approach emerges which is as common to the industrial mineral field as that used either consciously or subconsciously in the metallic field.The paper reviews the different factors and points of emphasis and offers an outline of the common pattern of appraisal for industrial minerals."

Mining and metallurgical industries need to minimize their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions; Hatch specializes in conducting mining and metallurgical energy management assessments and optimizing productivity. Projects executed have demonstrated that there is a wealth of energy management, waste reduction, and process efficiency improvements that require no or low capital investment. Typical energy cost savings are on the order of 5% to 12%, with similar reductions in GHG emissions. Hatch generates Marginal Abatement Cost Curves to optimize the implementation pathway, maximizing carbon abatement and minimizing cost. The findings of a practical case study from Cameco are presented.

"Radioactive minerals are found together with the more familiar ore minerals in veins, gossans, and pegmatites, Since they have a peculiar property, that of giving off penetrating radiation, the simplest means of field detection is by the use of some radiation detector.The two principal radioactive elements one may encounter are uranium and thorium. These may occur separately or together. At present there is very little demand for thorium and hence radioactive occurrences should be examined with some care to determine which element is present. To do this it may be necessary to have a chemical analysis made of samples from the occurrence. Uranium minerals that do not carry appreciable thorium have a conventional occurrence in quartz or carbonate veins. They are distinctive in appearance. Pitchblende, the principal ore, is hard, black, and very heavy. It weathers readily to soft, powdery minerals •brilliantly coloured orange, yellow, and sometimes green. It may be associated with familiar minerals such _as native silver, nickel-cobalt sulphides and arsenides, chalcopyrite, and hematite.It is the purpose of this paper to review very briefly the types of radiation detectors available .and to draw some general conclusions as to the types most suitable for particular applications.The highly penetrating gamma radiation is the most useful for detection of radioactive mineralization. The alpha rays have little or no penetration, and beta rays are stopped by thicknesses of a millimeter or so of material. We shall confine our remarks principally to those instruments intended to detect gamma radiation. These are of three types."

"Jones & Laughlin Mining Company, Ltd. operate the Adams mine at Kirkland Lake, Ontario, where they mine approximately 4,000,000 tons of extremely hard iron-formation and 3,500,000 tons of volcanic waste rock annually in order to produce 1,100,000 tons of iron pellets. This paper will discuss the maintenance of the four Model 1600 P & H shovels and the two 50-R drills used to obtain this production. The chief maintenance problems at the mine are due to the hard, abrasive ore and the cold winter weather."

"The new smelting process commenced operation in 1978. The pelletizing and sinter plants were replaced with slurry-fed roasters and the blast furnaces with electric furnaces. The existing converter aisle and matte handling facilities remained unchanged.Process DescriptionNickel-copper concentrate is partially roasted in two slurry-fed fluid bed roasters. After gas cleaning, the sulphur dioxide gas is transferred to the acid plant. The roaster product is conveyed to two electric furnaces for smelting to produce a waste slag and furnace matte. The slag goes to the disposal area and furnace matte containing the metal values is processed in the converters for further removal of iron and sulphur.The final matte containing about 75 per cent metal values is shipped to the refinery in Norway.The commercial smelter was designed for 2135 tonnes per day of concentrate, with an availability of 85% . Roasters and electric furnaces were sized at 117 per cent of design, or 1250 tonnes per day on each of two lines. Concentrate storage capacity in the plant is sufficient for two to three days' plant operation.The new smelting process will be discussed under the following headings:Concentrate Slurry HandlingFeed PreparationRoaster OperationRoaster Gas CleaningCalcine TransferElectric Furnace Operation and Process Control Converting and Matte HandlingUnder these headings, process control , equipment changes, and plant performance after three years' operation is reviewed. The copper-bearing waters now treated successfully at Britannia for the recovery of their copper content are almost entirely derived from what is known as the Fairview mine; this was the first extensive copper producer of the Britannia ore-bodies, and consisted of a number of almost parallel veins, carrying good copper values, the ore consisting of chalcopyrite and pyrite in a quartz gangue. These veins occur in what is known as the ?Britannia shear zone' (Schofield, S. J., G.S.C. Sum. Rept., 1918, Pt. B), developed for roughly five miles in a roof-pendant in the well-known Coast Range batholith. This .pendant is made up of Palxozoic rocks known as the 'Britannia Formation' (LeRoy, O.E., Portion of Main Coast of B.C. and Adjacent Islands; G.S.C. Memoir No. 996, 1908). These consist of dark carbonaceous slates, quartzites; and tuffs or basic flows, and within them are large quartz porphyry siJls. These Britannia rocks are sheared and altered, the resultant rock being a fissile quartz-sericite or quartz-chlorite schist. The mineralization invariably occurs in this chlorite schist, which in the more productive areas has mottles or blobs of chlorite developed. A narrow, though persistent, band of grey slate forms the footwall of the productive portions of the shear zone.

Dual phase (DP) steels are designed to consist of hard martensite dispersed in a relatively soft ferrite matrix, which offers a favorable combination of high strength with good deformability. Fiber laser welding (FLW) is becoming increasingly important for joining advanced materials due to its flexibility and deep penetration. In this study, the microstructure of a dual phase steel, DP980, welded by FLW technique was carefully analysed. Gleeble thermo-mechanical simulation coupled with analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that the FLW process produced significant microstructural changes in a narrow heat affected zone (HAZ) and fusion zone (FZ), which can result in dramatic changes in mechanical properties. This is reflected in the micro-hardness profile obtained across the welded material. The salient phase transitions induced by the FLW, including the formation of new martensite grains in the upper-critical HAZ and FZ, are discussed.

Some of these lessons are: 1) Project leaders must have a leadership that fosters good communication and team work; and this leadership style must come from top management. 2) A good communication must exist between the personnel from Engineering, Construction, and Operation. One of the first important questions that should be settled on the opening of a mine or the development of a new deep is the system of haulage to be used, since the layout of the haulage-ways at the pit bottom, or, in case of a slope mine, the arrangement of the surface works, depends largely upon the type selected. Should it later become desirable to install a system of haulage of a type other than that for which the mine roadways were originally laid out, considerable difficulty would likely be encountered in its installation and with the result that it would in all probability be most unsatisfactory and expensive in its operations. It therefore becomes very necessary that full consideration be given the haulage problem at an early date in order that the type best suited to the mine conditions and the required outputs can be intelligently planned for. It is sometimes found, however, that no matter how well the mining engineer explores the seam to be developed, or how accurately he anticipates its eccentricities, there will still remain some unrevealed or unsuspected conditions, or shall we say obstacles, placed by Nature to prevent the too easy winning of her treasures and incidentally to frustrate or modify the application of the plan so painstakingly laid down on paper, and to adversely affect the cost estimate.

THE Bullion mine, in the famous Cariboo district of British Columbia, is situated on the left bank of the South fork of the Quesnel river, approximately three miles below the outlet of Quesnel lake. A good road leads 63 miles northeast to the property from Williams lake, the railhead on the Pacific Great Eastern railway. The mine may also be reached over good roads from Vancouver via the Fraser canyon, Ashcroft, Clinton, and the 150-mile house, a total distance of 407 miles. In the early days of placer mining on the South fork of the Quesnel, several rich bars were found. The 'pay' on one of these at the mouth of Dancing Bill gulch was followed up the gulch by a Chinese company, who proved to be the discoverers of the present Bullion mine. This Chinese company commenced working in 1884, in what was then referred to as the China pit. Although working under very primitive conditions, it is reported that, during the ten years they operated the property, they recovered in excess of $900,000 in gold. This somewhat large recovery was due to a local concentration, the result of Dancing Bill creek having meandered down that portion of the channel and washed off the overburden. In 1894, a syndicate composed largely of the Canadian Pacific Railway directorate of that time, with J. B. Hobson as their field manager, acquired the property, as the apparent magnitude of the operation was too great for the resources of the Chinese company. Mr. Hobson, during the first ten years of his regime, developed the mine into a large-scale hydraulic operation, and during that period, from 1894 to 1905, recovered approximately $1,234,000 in gold. In 1906, the property was sold to the Guggenheim Exploration Company, who retained Mr. Hobson as Manager and embarked on an extensive programme to bring in additional water. This project was never completed, however, work being suddenly abandoned in 1907 and the mine closed down. Shortly afterwards, the property was purchased by a small operator on what is believed to have been largely borrowed capital. This venture resulted in no production, but in much litigation, which eventually reached the Privy Council in 1920.

"In the Timmins area, a close spatial and chronological association exists between gold deposits and two major stratabound carbonate-rich members and related quartz-feldspar porphyries. Synvo/canic and metamorphogenic are the two main types of mineralization recognized. Synvolcanic ores include the stratiform quartz-ankerite ""veins"", pyritic carbonates and chert-carbonate-tuff sedimentary rocks and epigenetic ventrelated breccias and stringer zones. Metamorphogenic ores consist of quartz-carbonate fracture fillings in dilatant zones developed during various phases of regional deformation and metamorphism. They are classically epigenetic in character.The evidence suggests a primary syngenetic enrichment of gold on the ocean floor and in vent areas during submarine felsic volcanism and related exhalative-hydrothermal activity followed by further enrichment into quartz-carbonate stockworks during regional deformation and greenschist metamorphism.Although normally thin (a few hundred metres), carbonate members in Archean volcanic terrain represent intense hydrothermal activity which could have transported and enriched gold. They should be used to locate fossil vents and structurally favourable zones where economic concentrations of gold may be found."

"The process described has been developed to utilize low-grade scrap -turnings, borings, tin cans and other types of ferrons scrap which currently has been of limited or no use in conventional steelmaking processes. If scrap of this type can be converted into high-purity iron by chemical means then there is a potential saving of several million tons of metal annually in North America.The process is chemically quite simple and consists of dissolving ferrons scrap in hydrochloric acid, followed by evaporation and crystallization of the resultant solution to yield ferrons chloride crystal.s. These crystals are dries, briquetted and converted to non sponge by reduction in hot hydrogen. The HCl produced from the reduction step. is absorbed in water and the hydrochloric acid so produced is returned to the dissolver circuit. The hydrogen produced from the initial dissolution of the scrap is used to reduce the ferrons chloride. Purity is maintained by bleeding off impure chloride solutions from the evaporator-crystallizer circuit, and converting these chlorides to oxides and HCI in a high-temperature spray roaster. The HCl produced in the roaster is absorbed in water and the hydrochloric acid returned to the dissolver."

Traditional approach to improvement is driven by good ideas from good people, but whilst the business case may sound good, when the project is complete, we often have not delivered on expectations.  Why not? The best way to successfully predict the outcomes of an improvement effort in a complex process is through using statistical modelling, which considers the impact of uncertainty within interacting processes.  Applying Theory of Constraints in a model helps leaders to quickly determine: Where the constraining process(es) is/are Where improvements will add the most value How much improvement should be targeted - before the next constraint takes over The confidence level of achieving a given target, which gives us a clear pathway to improvement. This paper presents an analysis of statistical modelling applications at Vale’s Manitoba Operations to achieve the 2025 targets. Using statistical modelling of the Business Structure, the team identified a series of process improvements through a Theory of Constraints Analysis. Value Stream Maps (VSMs) were used to define the required data, apply statistical modelling, and conduct training sessions enabling the Manitoba team to identify the constraining influences. THERE are many varieties of limestone, but for the general purposes of the pulp and paper industry, two classifications are sufficient: (1) High-calcium stone, which should be quite free from impurities and contain not less then 90 per cent calcium carbonate. (2) High-magnesium stone, containing not less than 25 per cent of magnesium carbonate. Before proceeding with detail on the use of limestone and lime in the industry, a few words regarding the pulp products made in Canada are desirable. By far the largest tonnage is made by grinding spruce and balsam logs on rotating sandstones or on artificial abrasive stones of the Norton or Carborundum types. This mechanical or groundwood pulp finds its largest use in the production of newsprint paper, of which it comprises about 80 per cent of the total fibrous substance employed-the remaining 20 per cent being unbleached sulphite pulp. No limestone or lime is directly employed in making groundwood pulp, as contrasted with the chemically prepared pulps, all of which require one or the other form of the base for their processing. Sulphite pulps comprise the next largest tonnage group. They are produced by boiling, under pressure and at elevated temperatures, spruce and balsam wood in chip form in solutions of bisulphites and sulphurous acid. The usual bisulphites employed are those of calcium and magnesium. Sodium, potassium, and ammonium bisulphites give progressively better pulps, but to date, in the absence of efficient recovery methods, cost has precluded their use.

"Declining ore grade, leading to increased material transport and plant throughput requirements, is one of the major challenges in the current mining environment. This is accompanied by rising energy and labor costs, decreasing plant productivity and the requirement for highest plant availability. Siemens’ answer is the latest gearless drive technology for grinding and conveying. Gearless drive solutions are surpassing the mechanical limits of conventional drive systems serving to utilize the principle of economies of scale. By elimination of various components of the drive train the maintenance activities and spare parts inventories are reduced. The advantages are culminating in the incomparable availability of the Siemens’ gearless drive technology of 99.46 to 99.71% - as confirmed by real operational data from the Antapaccay mine in Peru. It was the first plant worldwide to use gearless drives for both applications.INTRODUCTION – THE GEARLESS PRINCIPLE The principle idea behind a gearless drive system is to reduce the number of components and diversity of parts. Especially those components that are at the edge of current manufacturing or power limits are eliminated. The used equipment provides the possibility to scale up and increase the power transmitted to the driven machine. This finally results in a possible increase of throughput respectively transported or processed material. In order to apply this principle of simplification we will take a look at the components of a conventional drive system consisting of: - Driven equipment (mill, conveyor, slurry pump) - Components altering the rated speed (gearboxes, girth gear / pinion) - The electric motor - Starting devices for the motor (VSD, CCV, LRS, clutch), which are necessary because a direct across-the-line start of high power motors with load would result in a significant drop in the line supply voltage - Alternatively a variable speed drive (VSD) or cycloconverter (CCV) to utilize the possibility of speed variation during operation - The electrical supply system (cables, switchgear, transformers, protection equipment)"

"At Craigmont Mines Limited, Merritt, B.C., tests were begun in March, 1965 to evaluate the use of shotcrete as a method of ground support m development headings; previously, ail drifts had. required support, which was accomplished mainly by timber and occasionally by the use of rockbolts. The tests demonstrated conclusively the effectiveness of shotcrete for supporting Craigmont's ground. Gradually, the use of timber for ground support was virtually eliminated in favour of shotcrete. This paper describes the equipment used, the operation of the equipment, pertinent cast data and opera ting details. Also discussed are other uses developed for the shot-creting equipment, the use of reinforcing bar rockbolts, and a method used at Craigmont for lining long vertical ore passes with steel plate and concrete as part of the raising cycle."

The economic evolution from an agrarian society to an industrial and service-oriented economy is apparent to most students of history. The long-term trend is almost taken for granted, it does not require explanation — it is accepted as the nature of man to improve his standard of living. However, there are fluctuations around this trend line which have provoked a great deal of thought. The ability to understand and control these fluctuations would yield many benefits, it would eliminate economic waste and public hardship, and would no doubt make a few fortunes. I f it is not possible to control or eliminate these fluctuations, then a reasonable forecast of the tinting, rate of change and magnitude of the fluctuations would be invaluable to industry and government.
